Founded in 1942 by James Farmer and Quakers\, CORE launched an aggressive attack on segregation during World War II. Quickly rising to prominence\, CORE became one of the “Big Three” organizations that reshaped America in the 20th century. \nWhile all three played vital roles\, CORE distinguished itself through its pioneering use of nonviolent tactics. They initiated the Freedom Rides and sit-ins of the 1940s and 50s\, even inspiring Dr. King’s adoption of non-violence in the Montgomery Bus Boycott. CORE’s vanguard\, including Schwerner\, Goodman\, Chaney\, and Liuzzo\, bravely faced arrests\, beatings\, and even death while registering voters in the 1950s and 60s. \nMeanwhile\, CORE-CA championed equality in the North\, tackling fair housing\, employment\, and education issues.
