SUMMARY:The Old LA Zoo
DESCRIPTION:OPEN EVERYDAY- Griffith Park\nThe Old LA Zoo\, or The Griffith Park Zoo\, opened in 1912 and closed in 1966 with the opening of the new\, Los Angeles Zoo. The abandoned site of the Griffith Park Zoo\, complete with the ruins of animal enclosures\, is now a picnic area and hiking trail in Griffith Park. \n  \n \nThe Old LA Zoo opened in 1912 with a grand total of only 15 animals. Bears\, Lions\, Monkeys\, Macaw’s\, Elephants\, Reptiles\, Goats\, and Turtles now lived in the zoo\, which was built on the original site of Griffith J. Griffith‘s defunct ostrich farm. \n  \n \nAs Los Angeles grew\, the small Griffith Park Zoo was increasingly criticized as an “inadequate\, ugly\, poorly designed despite drawing more than 2 million visitors a year. \nIn 1958\, the city decided to create a brand new zoo\, and the Griffith Park Zoo closed in August 1966. Its animals were transferred to the new Los Angeles Zoo 2 miles away\, which opened a few months later. \n  \n \nThe animal enclosures\, with the bars removed\, were left as ruins and remain today. A large picnic area was added\, and NOW every summer\, the zoo is the location for the Independent Shakespeare Company’s  Free “Shakespeare in the Park” performances. \nThe Old Zoo is located on Griffith Park Dr. Only 2 miles from today’s LA Zoo\,   \n  \n \nUpon arriving\, you will see a small parking lot. Follow the path Up the hill to reach the abandoned enclosure. \nUpon arriving\, you will enter many of the original Grotto’s. There are lots of little spaces to crawl into\, AND stairs to climb up. \n  \n \nFollow the path around to get to the upper lever where you will find even more cages & enclosures. \n \nIf you are going to come for a visit\, make sure to bring a bottle of water and your imagination. \n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nfriendsofgriffithpark.org\n \n  \nFind more

SUMMARY:Getty Center Central Garden
DESCRIPTION:ADMISSION IS FREE – PARKING IS NOT- Sepulveda Pass\nPerched atop a hill overlooking Los Angeles\, the Getty Center is a renowned museum housing a vast collection of art. But beyond the grand galleries lies a hidden gem: Getty Center Robert Irwin’s Central Garden\, a captivating fusion of art\, nature\, and light. This four-acre masterpiece is not merely a backdrop for the museum; it’s an artistic experience in itself\, inviting visitors to connect with the beauty of the natural world. \n \n \nA Canvas of Light and Landscape\nRenowned artist Robert Irwin envisioned the Central Garden as a living sculpture. Opened in 1997\, the garden transcends the traditional notion of landscaped spaces. Here\, the focus is on the interplay of light\, water\, and meticulously chosen plants\, creating a dynamic and ever-changing environment. \nImmerse Yourself in Light and Shadow: \nAs you enter the Central Garden\, prepare to be enveloped by a symphony of light and shadow. The garden is designed to capture and manipulate natural light throughout the day\, creating shifting patterns and textures. Walkways meander through the space\, each turn revealing a new interplay of light on the foliage and water features. \nA Celebration of California Flora: \nThe Central Garden is a love letter to California’s native plants. Lush greenery\, vibrant wildflowers\, and mature trees create a diverse tapestry of textures and colors. The careful selection of plants not only adds visual interest but also reflects the surrounding Californian landscape. \nWater as a Guiding Element: \nWater plays a central role in the Central Garden’s design. A cascading stream winds through the space\, creating a soothing sound and a shimmering reflection of the sky. A central pool serves as a focal point\, its still surface mirroring the ever-changing light and clouds above. \n \nA Space for Contemplation and Connection\nThe Central Garden is more than just a visual spectacle; it’s a place for introspection and connection with nature. The serene atmosphere invites visitors to slow down\, disconnect from the outside world\, and appreciate the beauty of the natural world around them. \nFind a Quiet Corner: \nBenches are strategically placed throughout the garden\, offering moments of respite and reflection. Take a seat\, listen to the sounds of water and birdsong\, and allow yourself to be enveloped by the tranquility of the space. \nConnect with Nature Through Art: \nIrwin’s vision blurs the lines between art and nature. The Central Garden is a testament to how art can enhance our appreciation of the natural world. By experiencing the garden\, visitors can gain a new perspective on the beauty and complexity of nature. \n\nEnhance Your Visit to the Getty Center\nThe Central Garden is a free add-on to your visit to the Getty Center. Here are some tips to maximize your experience: \n\nPlan your visit: The Getty Center can get crowded\, especially on weekends. Consider arriving early or visiting during off-peak hours.\nWear comfortable shoes: The Central Garden is vast and best explored on foot.\nBring a water bottle: Staying hydrated is important\, especially on hot days.\nEmbrace the sensory experience: Pay attention to the subtle details – the feel of the sun on your skin\, the sound of birds chirping\, and the scent of blooming flowers.\n\nRobert Irwin’s Central Garden offers a unique opportunity to experience art and nature in perfect harmony. So\, on your next visit to the Getty Center\, don’t miss the chance to escape into this serene haven of light and beauty. \nHOURS\nMonday: CLOSED\nTuesday – Sunday: 10:00 am – 5:30 pm \n\nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \ngetty.edu/art/collection\n \n  \nFind more

SUMMARY:THE HAMMER MUSEUM
DESCRIPTION:FREE FOR GOOD! Westwood Village\nThe Hammer Museum champions the art and artists who challenge us to see the world in a new light\, to experience the unexpected\, to ignite our imaginations\, and inspire change. \n\nThe Hammer understands that art not only has the power to transport us through aesthetic experience but can also provide significant insight into some of the most pressing cultural\, political\, and social questions of our time. We share the unique and invaluable perspectives that artists have on the world around us. \nA vibrant intellectual and creative nexus\, the Hammer is fueled by dynamic exhibitions and programs—including lectures\, symposia\, film series\, readings\, and musical performances—that spark meaningful encounters with art and ideas. \nAnd through our unwavering commitment to free admission and free public programs\, the Hammer is open for all and FREE FOR GOOD.\n  \n\n \n\nA BIGGER\, BETTER HAMMER MUSEUM\n\nIf oil magnate Armand Hammer were alive today\, he might marvel that the museum he launched in Westwood before his death in 1990 has evolved into one of the most forward-focused art institutions in Los Angeles. After all\, the museum was originally designed to house his fine collection of old-master paintings and drawings\, as well as works on paper by Honoré Daumier and his 19th-century contemporaries. \n\n\n\n\n\nBut in the ensuing decades\, as the art world has continued to evolve\, so has Los Angeles — and so has the Hammer Museum\, which is now a part of the UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture. In 1994\, UCLA assumed management and operations of the museum\, and the Hammer kept its original purpose but also expanded its mission. Today\, the Hammer has a wide reputation for innovation and for showcasing new artists. \n  \n\nNew Contemporary Gallery\n\n  \n“L.A. has become a hotbed of contemporary art and artists\,” says Ann Philbin\, the museum’s director since 1999\, “and the Hammer has become a premier institution where they are shown.” \n  \n\n\n4th-Floor-Offices\n\n  \nUnder Philbin’s leadership\, the museum has expanded its collections and programs\, including establishing the Hammer Projects series of exhibitions and installations featuring local\, national and international emerging artists. It also launched the Made in L.A. biennial\, now in its fourth edition. Through these and other innovations\, the Hammer has quadrupled its attendance to about 250\,000 a year. \n  \nLindbrook Terrace\n  \nMeanwhile\, Occidental Petroleum\, which occupied the adjoining building\, relocated to Houston\, Texas. So the Hammer has begun a major\, multiyear expansion that will take the museum far into the 21st century. \nEarlier this year\, the Hammer announced a $180 million capital campaign. Almost half of those funds will be used to expand gallery and other public spaces\, while the rest will go toward exhibitions\, programming and an endowment. The museum has already raised more than $130 million\, including $30 million from L.A. philanthropists Lynda and Stewart ’59\, J.D. ’62 Resnick and $20 million from Hammer board chair Marcy Carsey. \n  \n  \nAnnex\n  \nThe renovations and additions being designed by Michael Maltzan Architecture\, who was commissioned in 2000 to create the museum’s 2003 master plan\, include: \n• A newly designed entrance at Wilshire and Westwood boulevards to maximize the museum’s visual presence at one of the nation’s busiest intersections. In the coming years\, the museum will also benefit from a planned Metro Purple Line station across Wilshire. \n• More than 10\,000 square feet of additional exhibition space for contemporary art. \n• New permanent collection galleries and a study room for the Grunwald Center Collection. \n• 20\,000 square feet of enhanced public spaces\, including a new restaurant. \n• A new and more accessible Hammer Store. \n  \n  \n2nd Floor B Side\n  \nIn all\, the expansion will provide 60 percent more gallery space for exhibitions. The museum will remain open during construction\, and admission will continue to be free. “We’re accessible to everyone\, and that keeps people coming back\,” Philbin says. “L.A. has been growing as one of the world’s most exciting cultural creative communities\, and the museum has grown alongside it.” \n  \n\n  \nBookstore\nHISTORY OF THE HAMMER MUSEUM\nThe Hammer Museum opened to the public in November 1990. Founded by Dr. Armand Hammer\, former Chairman of Occidental Petroleum Corporation\, the Museum was designed by architect Edward Larrabee Barnes. Financed by Occidental\, the Museum was built adjacent to the Corporation’s international headquarters in Westwood. At that time\, the Museum featured galleries for Dr. Hammer’s collections — old master paintings and drawings\, and a collection of works on paper by Honore Daumier and his contemporaries — as well as galleries for traveling exhibitions. Dr. Hammer passed away in December 1990\, three weeks after the opening of the Museum leaving many spaces unfinished. \nIn 1992\, the Museum began negotiations with its neighbor\, University of California\, Los Angeles (UCLA)\, to assume the management and operations of the institution. In April 1994\, the partnership with UCLA was finalized and the following year the University relocated its collections and the staff of the Wight Art Gallery and the Grunwald Center for the Graphic Arts to the Hammer. The Museum also assumed responsibility for the Franklin D. Murphy Sculpture Garden\, located at the north end of the UCLA campus. \nHenry Hopkins\, then director of the Wight gallery and professor in the Department of Art\, became director of the Museum until his retirement in 1998. In 1999 Ann Philbin was named director and has developed a strong and original institutional identity and built a national and international reputation for thematic contemporary exhibitions\, scholarly historical exhibitions\, and contemporary artists’ projects. During her tenure the Hammer has formed a Hammer Contemporary Collection which now holds over 2\,000 artworks. In addition\, Philbin has overseen substantial renovations to the museum’s building\, including the completion of the 300-seat Billy Wilder Theater and museum café. With Philbin’s direction\, the museum instituted the internationally acclaimed Hammer Projects\, a series of more than one hundred contemporary exhibitions and installations featuring local\, national\, and international emerging artists. Philbin also created a series of dynamic public programs which are core to the Hammer’s identity and regularly feature many of the most influential authors\, artists\, and creative thinkers of our time. \n \n\nHours\nThe museum is open every day\, except Mondays\, July 4\, Thanksgiving\, Christmas\, and New Year’s Day. \nMonday: Closed\nTuesday – Friday: 11:00 a.m.-8:00p.m.\nSaturday & Sunday: 10:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. \nAdmission to all exhibitions and public programs is free and open to the public. Free admission to the Hammer Museum is made possible through the generosity of Erika J Glazer and Brenda R. Potter. \n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nhammer.ucla.edu\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n  \n

Designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro in collaboration with Gensler\, the museum offers free general admission and presents an active program of rotating temporary exhibitions and innovative audience engagement. The Broad is home to 2\,000 works of art in the Broad collection\, which is one of the world’s leading collections of postwar and contemporary art. \n  \n \nThe Broad from Home\nThe Broad is committed to inspiring and fostering an appreciation of contemporary art through our digital initiatives. Experience #TheBroadFromHome to find inspiration through music\, poetry\, performance\, workshops\, and conversations centered around the Broad collection. \nOverview \nPerformances \nTalks & Conversations \nArtist Spotlight \nFamily Art Workshops \nMore Online Programs \n  \nThe Broad Collection\nEli and Edythe Broad have been building their collection of postwar and contemporary art over the last 50 years. With a belief that the greatest art collections are built when the art is being made\, the Broads took to collecting art of their own time. \nThe Broad is home to 2\,000 works in the Broad collection by more than 200 artists\, and is one of the world’s leading collections of postwar and contemporary art. The collection features in-depth holdings of influential contemporary artists such as Jean-Michel Basquiat\, Mark Bradford\, Jasper Johns\, Jeff Koons\, Barbara Kruger\, Yayoi Kusama\, Kerry James Marshall\, Julie Mehretu\, Takashi Murakami\, Robert Rauschenberg\, Ed Ruscha\, Cindy Sherman\, Cy Twombly\, Andy Warhol\, and more\, plus an ever-growing representation of younger artists. \n  \nView Our Collection Here\n \nIn Under the Table\, 1994\, the viewer is both in the world of imaginary giants and in the world of remembered childhood. Fusing Alice in Wonderland with the Duchampian tradition of the readymade\, Artist Robert Therrien constructs a doppelganger from an everyday object\, both displaying his visual wit and actualizing literary or imaginative fantasy in three-dimensional space. The table exudes an extraordinary aura\, compelling one to walk underneath the table and conjuring the physical memory of being under the table of one’s childhood home. Complicated and powerful\, the work offers fresh ideas of what a table\, sculpture\, and memory can mean. \n  \n  \n \nUsing the recognizable form of a balloon twisted into the shape of a dog\, Koons has frozen a moment in time\, exaggerating both scale and material. \nBalloon Dog (Blue) is literal and abstract. When standing close to it\, one’s own distorted reflection bends around smooth pert curves. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\nGeneral Admission is Free\nAll visitors must reserve timed tickets in advance. Some exhibitions and events carry a separate charge. \n\n\n\n\n\nHours\nMonday: Closed\nTuesday – Wednesday: 11:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.\nThursday – Friday: 11:00 a.m.-8:00 p.m.\nSaturday: 10:00 a.m.-8:00p.m.\nSunday: 10:00 a.m.-6:00p.m. \n\n\n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nhttps://www.thebroad.org/visit/mirror-rooms\n \n  \nFind more

SUMMARY:Brothers Comedy at Brews Brothers
DESCRIPTION:EVERY 4TH WEDNESDAY – North Hollywood\nLooking for a good laugh? Look no further than the Brothers Comedy Show! Held every fourth Wednesday at 8 pm at Brews Brothers in North Hollywood. This monthly comedy showcase is hosted by local comedians and features a rotating lineup of hilarious stand-up comedians from around the Los Angeles area. \n \nThe intimate setting of Brews Brothers provides the perfect backdrop for an evening of laughs with friends or a fun night out with a date. With its laid-back atmosphere and impressive selection of craft beers\, Brews Brothers is the perfect spot for a night of entertainment. \n\n \n5140 Lankershim Blvd\, North Hollywood\, CA 91601 \nWe’ve traveled the world in search of the best beers and were inspired by the vast variety of craft beers and breweries that make them. Brews Brothers are our take on serving an ever-changing selection of the best beers in LA’s growing craft beer market. \n \nNorth Hollywood: \nOur dynamic forty-two taps include combinations of American strong ales\, Belgian strong ales\, Barrel Aged beers\, IPAs\, light beers\, wheat beers\, unique one-offs\, and various other styles. \n \nWe also have house-made Kombucha\, three beers on nitro\, and a couple of seasonal ciders. We interchange our taps often\, replacing existing beers with ones of similar styles\, so there is always something new to try! \n \nOur food menu consists of artisan sandwiches\, fresh salads\, and several small bite options. All food is made with high-quality ingredients – no hormones\, no chemicals\, and no preservatives. \nWHO ARE THE BREWS BROTHERS?\n \nBillie and Joey have been involved with the LA Craft Beer scene for over a decade – watching it grow from nearly nothing to the massive and ever-expanding market it is today. \nOver the years the brothers have watched and helped numerous beer bars and restaurant owners successfully open and operate their establishments. \nBillie and Joey have brewed over 240 batches of beer along with a few collaborations with some of the more established breweries in California. They intend to continue to collaborate with more breweries in the future. \nDuring their many visits to Belgium\, along with numerous trips around the country\, they previewed many beer shops and were impressed with the large variety of beer selections offered. They knew they had the experience and passion for creating something similar at home. \nBillie and Joey now bring this love\, knowledge\, and expertise to bring you “BREWS BROTHERS” \nHOURS\nMonday – Thursday: 4:00 pm – 10:00 pm\nFriday – Saturday: 12:00 pm – 12:00 am\nSunday: 12:00 pm – 10:00 pm \n\nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nwww.brewsbrotherscraftbeer.com/the-brewery\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

SUMMARY:THE MUSEUM OF SOCIAL JUSTICE
DESCRIPTION:OPEN THURSDAY – SUNDAY- Olivera Street\nThe Museum of Social Justice is dedicated to telling the neglected stories of the diverse people of Los Angeles. By showcasing the history of social movements from the perspective of marginalized groups\, the Museum inspires visitors to engage with social justice principles and advocate for change.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Museum carries on in the tradition of the founder’s commitment to social justice issues such as ministry to the poor\, abolition\, women’s suffrage\, and civil rights.  A permanent exhibition detailing the Methodist’s long history of championing social justice causes for the less fortunate.  The exhibition features dynamic and rarely seen images from the Museum archives\, documenting Los Angeles Methodist’s progressive social work and ethnic outreach endeavors during the long period of Los Angeles’ growth.  In conjunction with the permanent exhibition\, and moving beyond Methodist activities\, the Museum will install temporary exhibitions examining past and present social justice activities culled from a wide variety of amazingly rich and diverse ethnic\, religious\, and racial communities in the city of Los Angeles and beyond.\n\nThe museum is housed in the historic La Plaza United Methodist Church at the intersection of the Los Angeles Plaza and famous Olvera Street.  Thanks to its proximity to some of the finest educational institutions the world has to offer\, such as California State University\, Los Angeles (CSULA)\, University of California\, Los Angeles (UCLA)\, Otis College of Art and Design\, and California State University\, Northridge (CSUN) the Museum has developed a diverse set of educational and social outreach programs to bring opportunities to the community.  These programs continue La Plaza United Methodist Church’s 100 year-old legacy of bringing socio-economic and health related equality to all citizens of Los Angeles\, through non-sectarian outreach services\, knowledge\, and empowerment.\n\n\nFounded in 2012\, the Los Angeles United Methodist Museum of Social Justice tells the untold story of the founding of Los Angeles. The museum and educational center is housed in the historic La Plaza United Methodist Church at the intersection of Los Angeles Plaza and Olvera Street. \nThe Museum hosts a diverse set of educational and social outreach programs in partnership with California State University\, Los Angeles (CSULA)\, University of California\, Los Angeles (UCLA)\, Otis College of Art and Design\, and California State University\, Northridge (CSUN) These programs continue La Plaza United Methodist Church’s 100 year-old legacy of bringing socio-economic and health related equality to all citizens of Los Angeles\, through non-sectarian outreach services\, knowledge\, and empowerment. \n \nThe inaugural exhibit “Angels on the Plaza\,” opened in September 2013 with original images from the La Plaza collection that document the living conditions of the immigrant population in and around the Plaza from 1910-1927. In September\, 2014; “Exodus\,” a photographic exhibition of the work of Julian Cardona documented the forced modern-day exodus of people from Mexico to the US. \nLa Plaza  The current home of La Plaza United Methodist Church was built in 1926. When the state of California declared the La Plaza area a historic monument\, the Cal-Pac United Methodist Conference was forced to give up the church and the adjoining conference center through threat of eminent domain. The Conference moved its offices to Pasadena\, but the church remained\, with a 50 year lease at a $1 per year. \nThe Urban Foundation’s role  In the 1990‘s\, the city of Los Angeles took over the historic El Pueblo monument from the state\, and negotiations for a new church lease in 2002 were unsuccessful. In 2010\, the “La Plaza initiative\,” a program of the Urban Foundation and the United Methodist Cal-Pac Conference\, was founded and charged with negotiating a new lease. When the City of Los Angeles resisted negotiating in good faith\, the La Plaza congregation\, under the direction of founding museum director\, Leonora Barron\, led a series of protests and prayer services on the steps of City hall. After a year long struggle\, a fair agreement was reached. The city agreed to lease the church to the congregation\, and the La Plaza Initiative agreed to create a museum which would provide a sense of the church’s rich history of social justice work. \nHours\nMonday – Wednesday: Closed\nThursday – Sunday: 10:00am – 3:00pm \n\n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nhttps://www.museumofsocialjustice.org/\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n
