SUMMARY:The Santa Monica Steps
DESCRIPTION:OPEN AGAIN 24/7- Santa Monica\nThe Santa Monica Stairs are actually two different stairways\, both of which descend from Santa Monica’s Adelaide Drive to Entrada Drive (Santa Monica Canyon). \n \nThe mis-named “7th Street stairway” has its upper end across from 526 Adelaide Drive\, and leads down to Entrada Drive\, across the street from Amalfi Drive. It consists of 152 wooden steps and 18 concrete steps in a straight path\, about 5.5 feet wide\, separated by three horizontal landings. Altogether the 170 steps produce an overall vertical change of about 110 feet. \n \n\n \nThe “4th-street stairway” begins at the intersection of 4th Street and Adelaide\, leading down to Ocean Avenue Extension. It consists solely of concrete flights interconnected by right- and left-hand turns. There are 189 steps producing an overall vertical change of about 115 feet. \n  \n \nOn the Pacific Palisades side of Santa Monica Canyon is the so-called “secret Mesa stairway”\, which is much less used although it has more steps than either of the above. The base is on Mesa Road\, next to 404 Mesa and about a 10-minute walk from West Channel Road. 201 concrete steps rise about 100 feet to the intersection of Upper Mesa Road and Amalfi Drive. There is no railing except for the topmost 18 steps\, so descending requires caution. (The stairs are sometimes incorrectly called the “La Mesa stairs”–La Mesa Drive is elsewhere in Santa Monica\, and there is a La Mesa Stairway in the city of La Mesa in San Diego County.) \nSeveral other lengthy staircases nearby descend from Palisades Park bluffs to overpasses crossing Pacific Coast Highway to the beach: \n  \n\nThe northernmost crossing near Montana Avenue has 172 steps with a vertical change from Palisades Park to the pedestrian path on the beach of about 110 feet.Separate ramps\, one from the vicinity of Idaho Ave and the other from the top of the California Incline\, converge and share the same bridge crossing to the beach\, with a vertical change of 105 feet from Idaho\, 100 from California. The California route is bicycle-friendly with no steps at all\, while the Idaho route has one circular stairway of 41 steps between long sections of ramp.\nOne near Arizona Avenue has 115 steps with about 65 feet of vertical change\, with the longer inland section made of attractive brick.\nOne near Broadway has 83 steps with a vertical change of about 50 feet.\n\nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nhttps://www.facebook.com/santamonicastairs/\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

Guitarist Dave Mustaine (who went on to form Megadeth after being fired from the band) and bassists Ron McGovney\, Cliff Burton (who died in a bus accident in Sweden in 1986) and Jason Newsted are former members of the band. \n  \n \nMetallica earned a growing fan base in the underground music community and won critical acclaim with its first five albums. The band’s third album\, Master of Puppets (1986)\, was described as one of the heaviest and most influential thrash metal albums. But unlike those services which offer streaming access to channels you’d find on cable TV\, Pluto TV offers free content mainly curated from what’s already available online. Pluto TV launched in 2014 and picked up steam fairly quickly making it the largest free TV streaming service in the U.S. \nYou’re not going to find standard TV channels\, though some are represented via their web counterparts\, especially news outlets. Those include familiar names like Bloomberg\, Cheddar\, CNBC\, MSNBC\, CBSN\, and many others. As of April 2019\, it also includes CNN\, though not the full\, live CNN you get on cable. Instead\, the CNN channel features a curated playlist of short-form digital content from CNN’s anchors and reporters. Featured clips are oriented toward lifestyle and culture\, climate change\, the environment\, and original CNN investigations and interviews. A similar channel for NBC called NBC News Now arrived in February 2020. Other recent additions to Pluto include CMT\, Kevin Hart’s Laugh out Loud\, and Red Bull TV\, plus a handful of new themed channels in Celebrity\, Reality\, and Lives\, the perfect cocktail for pop culture and reality TV enthusiasts. \nSports coverage is less conventional — you’re not going to find the likes of ESPN here. Instead\, you’ll find choices like Fight\, World Poker Tour\, Impact Wrestling\, a dedicated Sports News network\, Glory Kickboxing\, and the Big Sky Network. DAZN recently signed a deal to provide an original weekly series on Pluto TV\, and there’s potential for that partnership to expand down the line. Pluto has recently added an official PGA Tour channel with 24/7 coverage of one of golf’s biggest tournaments. \nIn the Entertainment section\, there are reruns of reality and documentary shows alongside episodes of Dennis the Menace\, Thunderbirds\, and other older TV shows. Among those various channels\, you’ll also find Wipeout\, a network that only shows reruns of the popular game show and various iterations from different countries\, as well as Nosey\, which shows reruns of The Jerry Springer Show and The Maury Show\, among others. Meanwhile\, the Curiosity section features Science TV\, Docu TV\, Xive TV\, and even a NASA live stream. New additions include Pluto TV Sitcoms\, offering a selection of older comedies like 3rd Rock from the Sun and The Lucy Show\, and a Spanish-language channel called Pluto TV Cine. \n  \n\nFor additional information\, visit the Pluto TV website @ \npluto.tv\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:Roundhouse Aquarium
DESCRIPTION:OPEN DAILY- Manhattan Beach Pier\nThe Roundhouse Aquarium is located at the end of the Manhattan Beach Pier. The Roundhouse has undergone a recent revitalization through a $4 million capital project spearheaded by the Harrison Greenberg Foundation. The new Roundhouse Aquarium educates and inspires more than 300\,000 visitors every year. It is managed and operated by the nonprofit oceanic and environmental organization Oceanographic Teaching Stations\, Inc. (OTS)\, whose mission is to connect and engage visitors and students to the oceans through hands-on interactive experiences with marine life and habitats of southern California\, and to inspire them to become good stewards of our environment. \nOTS’ programs at the Roundhouse Aquarium promote the study of the oceans\, tidelands and beaches of Southern California through a wide slate of science-based and standards-aligned education programs with its immersive and engaging exhibits of a diverse array of marine life.  More than 100 marine animals from Southern California’s waters live at the aquarium\, many are native to its local waters in the Santa Monica Bay. Notable wildlife include moon jellies\, sharks\, octopus\, sheepshead\, moray eels\, lobsters\, and more – as well as a touch tank with sea stars\, sea cucumbers\, sea urchins and sea snails. The aquarium prides itself on being family oriented. It’s a great place for kids to take their parents! \n\n\n\n\n\nCome SEA our Marine Exhibits\nGet to know the habitats within Southern California by visiting our diverse marine exhibits. These exhibits are showcased within 4 Aquarium Galleries. \n\n\nMarine Habitat Gallery\n\nRocky Reef Tank \nThe Rocky Reef shows us what reefs in the cold California waters look like. They are similar to coral reefs but are made up of rocks instead of corals. They are just as important of a habitat as coral reefs and often serve as a nursery for many types of juvenile fish. \nKelp Forest Tank \nThe Kelp Forest tank represents a distinct southern California marine habitat. This tank shows us what it looks like to swim at the edge of the kelp forest\, where rocks become scarcer and sand more plentiful. Many of the animals in the tank can live their life deep within the kelp forest or at the very edge. Those animals at the edges can even camouflage in the sand. \n\n\n\n\nEducation Gallery\n\nDeep Kelp Forest Tank\nThese tanks represent a very diverse and abundant habitat\, the kelp forest! The giant kelp that grows 2 feet a day\, provides food and shelter for many different animals. Not only is this habitat important for animals\, but it is also important to humans as well! Seaweeds\, like kelp\, produce about 70% of our oxygen through photosynthesis. So\, take a deep breath and thank kelp! \nTide Pool Tank\nAll the animals that you can find in our touch tank live in a habitat called a tide pool. When the tide is low and the water has receded\, pools of water are left in between rocks which form the tide pools. In Southern California\, we have 2 high tides and 2 low tides every day\, which means the animals’ habitat is always changing. They must have special adaptations that allow them to live in such a dynamic habitat. \nPier Piling Tank\nHave you ever wondered what is under the pier? This tank will give you a good idea! Pier pilings\, while man made\, do create a habitat for lots of animals ranging from mussels\, to crabs\, to fish and rays. The fish can either hide amongst the mussels or lay on the sand under the pier among the rays. \n\n\n\n \n\n\nMarine Science Gallery\n\nJewel Tank\nSee our animals in the spotlight with cool adaptive traits like our spotted rose anemone that has biofluorescence and our baby swell shark eggs that can camouflage as seaweed. The baby swell sharks are really cute when they hatch out too! \nPipefish Tank\nThe Pipefish tank is an example of a mudflat with eelgrass beds that act as a nursery for young fish and young sting rays. See if you can spot a pipefish in the eelgrass. \nArtificial Reef Tank\nThe Artificial Reef tank is an examples of man-made structures left behind that now act as reefs teaming with life from sea anemones on rock scallops to sea stars to juvenile rockfish. Can you see the bright orange Garibaldi with blue spots? \nOctopus Tank\nThe octopus tank is an example of a deep water habitat brought to life for our guests to see. It features anemones and rock scallops on the reef which also add structure and microhabitats to the reef. The decorator crab uses the colonial strawberry anemones to help decorate its body to camouflage with the reef. There are small but colorful rockfish like the half-banded rockfish that stay close to the rocks and use them as shelter. \nKid’s Kelp Corner\nHave you ever wondered oh why\, oh why did my goldfish die? Come find the answer in the Kid’s Kelp Corner. You can also relax and read the many ocean related books in our library while watching our inquisitive freshwater fish. \nDiscovery Center\nCome check out what it means to be a scientist! Observe plankton\, learn about the food chain\, and discover some of the aquarium’s smallest residents. \nSeahorse Tank\nSeahorses are some of the most fragile sea creatures in the ocean\, and they can camouflage to look like seaweed\, eelgrass\, or even sea fans. They use their tails to hold onto eelgrass and stay upright\, but they won’t swim except in short bursts. They have excellent eyesight that they use to track their prey\, which are small shrimps. \n  \n\n\n\nImmersion Gallery\n\n\n\n\n\nOctober through March\nMonday-Friday: 2PM – 5PM\nSaturday-Sunday: 10AM – 5PM\n\n\n\n\n\n\n}\n\n\nApril through September\nMonday-Friday: 2PM – 7PM\nSaturday-Sunday: 10AM – 7PM \nHours\nMonday: Closed\nTuesday – Saturday: 10:00am – 5:00pm\nSunday: 11:00am – 5:00pm \n  \n\n\nAdvanced timed-entry reservations are required.\n\n\n\n\n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nroundhouseaquarium.org/\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n  \n\n\n\n\n  \n

SUMMARY:The Broad Museum- DTLA
DESCRIPTION:FREE TUE – SUN- Bunker Hill\, DTLA\nThe Broad makes its collection of contemporary art from the 1950s to the present accessible to the widest possible audience by presenting exhibitions and operating a lending program to art museums and galleries worldwide. \nBy actively building a dynamic collection that features in-depth representations of influential contemporary artists and by advancing education and engagement through exhibitions and diverse public programming\, the museum enriches\, provokes\, inspires\, and fosters appreciation of art of our time. \n \nThe Broad was founded by philanthropists Eli and Edythe Broad on Grand Avenue in downtown Los Angeles. Designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro in collaboration with Gensler\, the museum offers free general admission and presents an active program of rotating temporary exhibitions and innovative audience engagement. The Broad is home to 2\,000 works of art in the Broad collection\, which is one of the world’s leading collections of postwar and contemporary art. \n  \n \nThe Broad from Home\nThe Broad is committed to inspiring and fostering an appreciation of contemporary art through our digital initiatives. Experience #TheBroadFromHome to find inspiration through music\, poetry\, performance\, workshops\, and conversations centered around the Broad collection. \nOverview \nPerformances \nTalks & Conversations \nArtist Spotlight \nFamily Art Workshops \nMore Online Programs \n  \nThe Broad Collection\nEli and Edythe Broad have been building their collection of postwar and contemporary art over the last 50 years. With a belief that the greatest art collections are built when the art is being made\, the Broads took to collecting art of their own time. \nThe Broad is home to 2\,000 works in the Broad collection by more than 200 artists\, and is one of the world’s leading collections of postwar and contemporary art. The collection features in-depth holdings of influential contemporary artists such as Jean-Michel Basquiat\, Mark Bradford\, Jasper Johns\, Jeff Koons\, Barbara Kruger\, Yayoi Kusama\, Kerry James Marshall\, Julie Mehretu\, Takashi Murakami\, Robert Rauschenberg\, Ed Ruscha\, Cindy Sherman\, Cy Twombly\, Andy Warhol\, and more\, plus an ever-growing representation of younger artists. \n  \nView Our Collection Here\n \nIn Under the Table\, 1994\, the viewer is both in the world of imaginary giants and in the world of remembered childhood. Fusing Alice in Wonderland with the Duchampian tradition of the readymade\, Artist Robert Therrien constructs a doppelganger from an everyday object\, both displaying his visual wit and actualizing literary or imaginative fantasy in three-dimensional space. The table exudes an extraordinary aura\, compelling one to walk underneath the table and conjuring the physical memory of being under the table of one’s childhood home. Complicated and powerful\, the work offers fresh ideas of what a table\, sculpture\, and memory can mean. \n  \n  \n \nUsing the recognizable form of a balloon twisted into the shape of a dog\, Koons has frozen a moment in time\, exaggerating both scale and material. \nBalloon Dog (Blue) is literal and abstract. SUMMARY:HOKALI Beach Cleanup Day
DESCRIPTION:EVERY 2nd of the MONTH- Venice Beach \nBeach Cleanup by HOKALI Surf Lessons at Venice Beach 1800 Ocean Front Walk\, Venice\, CA \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCalling All Venice Beach Surf Community. All the HOKALI Community of surfers will be cleaning the beaches together\, on the second day of every month!! “What day is that man?”\, you may ask. Ahh\, that’s an easy one Dude! It’s the Second Day. \nHOKALI is announcing guidelines for individuals to conduct solo beach clean ups as long as local governing bodies allow for public beach access. A solo cleanup is defined as an individual cleanup by one person or household unit\, not necessarily organized by the chapter\, but promoted as an activity for the public. \nThe following requirements are outlined to assist in evaluating your ability to conduct a solo beach cleanup. \n\nYour state and local governing agency allows access to the beach;\n\n\nActive use of the beach is allowed under applicable laws (e.g. walking included);\n\n\nAdditional restrictions on active beach use are followed\, e.g.\, open and closing times\n\n\nBeaches are not so crowded that active users can maintain a safe physical distance of 6 feet\n\nParticipation in a solo cleanup event is voluntary and solely at a participant’s own risk\, including risk associated with COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2). Individuals should only participate to the extent that they can comply with applicable federal\, state\, and local rules and restrictions\, and the below required practices including physical distancing. \nThe following rules must be followed to ensure individuals are equipped to make an educated\, safe and mindful decision to conduct a solo cleanup while following CDC public health guidance\, local beach access restrictions\, and EPA recommendations for properly discarding used PPE items. \nBe responsible! If you are feeling sick or generally unwell\, please stay indoors and heal. \n  \n \n  \nParticipate in a Raffle: Send us your photo or uploaded the picture to social media with #hokalichallenge and tag @hokali.co and participate for a FREE SURFING LESSON + HOKALI HAT. \nWhere to find US: Look for the HOKALI Flag at the beach. Our coach Paislee will be there waiting for you :). His contact information is: +8188237711 \nWhat to bring: mask/cloth face covering\, gloves\, 60% alcohol-based hand sanitizer\, grabbers (if you have them)\, 2 separate collection receptacles. \nCheck with your local authority on beach use and access restrictions. Select a location where you can maintain a minimum physical distance of 6 feet. Avoid crowded areas at crowded times. \nWear a mask or cloth face covering when in public per CDC recommendations. \nWear gloves. We cannot stress this safety precaution enough. Viruses can live on hard surfaces\, and individuals should exercise extreme caution when collecting litter. Wearing gloves discourages you from touching your face or face covering. If using reusable gloves\, be sure to properly sanitize between uses. Effective sanitization of a reusable glove depends on the material. Individuals should comply with CDC and EPA guidance on how to effectively sanitize reusable items against COVID-19. \nGrabbers are a good way to minimize contact between your gloves and trash items. Sanitize these after use and before transport or storage. \nRefrain from touching your face or public surfaces during the cleanup. \nRemember to use hand sanitizer after the cleanup is over\, then wash your hands with soap and hot water for 20 seconds as soon as you’re able to do so. \nRemember to properly disinfect all reusable equipment before and after the cleanup using an EPA-approved product for use against SARS-CoV-2\, the virus that causes COVID-19. \nFor more information check out Surf Lessons website: www.hokali.co \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nHours\nEvery 2nd of the Month: 12:00pm – 1:30pm \n\n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \neventbrite.com/e/hokali-beach-cleanup-day-venice\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

SUMMARY:PINATAS: THE HIGH ART OF CELEBRATION
DESCRIPTION:EVERY TUESDAY – SUNDAY- 3rd Street\n\nPINATAS: THE HIGH ART OF CELEBRATION\n9/4/2021 – 12/4/2021\n\n\nThe Craft in America Center is pleased to present a dynamic in-person and virtual exhibition of about fifty works made by fifteen artists and artist collectives from across the U.S. and Mexico\, which focuses on the overlooked craft of handmade piñatas and piñata-based art objects. \n\nPiñatas: The High Art of Celebration at Craft in America\, Gallery Installation View. Photo: Madison Metro\, Craft in America.\nPiñatas: The High Art of Celebration at Craft in America\, Gallery Installation View. Photo: Madison Metro\, Craft in America.\n\nPiñatas\, ubiquitous and often the focal point of parties and festive occasions across the U.S.\, are handcrafted and ephemeral objects that signify happiness\, joy\, release\, and celebration. This exhibition touches on the role that they play in modern material culture and how they are made to embody social commentary\, along with the ways that artists address piñatas as conceptual and technical launching points for their vision. \nThe work of traditional piñata artisans is presented alongside the creations of artists who reinvent and reinterpret the piñata through engaging sculptural practices. The contemporary artists featured in this exhibition reconsider the techniques\, materials\, form\, function\, and notion of the piñata\, forming a new language for expression. \nPiñatas are a deeply rooted Mexican tradition that has become widespread and beloved across cultures. Piñatas are accessible by nature and made from relatively humble materials. They are shapeshifters that can be created to take any form\, be that of a creature\, shape\, figure\, or idea. Considering their popularity in our lives and how many memories are made around piñata play\, this contemporary form of cultural craft has been relatively unexamined. \nAs creators of material culture\, craft makers design and build the relics of our everyday\, modern world. This exhibition touches on the ephemeral and performative nature of certain forms of craft. Craft today plays a part in our traditions\, our celebrations\, our relationships\, and it deepens how we experience life\, even when it is destroyed or discarded after use. \nPiñatas are intertwined with childhood experiences\, gatherings of family and friends\, and celebratory turning points in life– all of which have become much more precious to us in this era of COVID. As markers of these events\, piñatas have new resonance and meaning today. They continue to be shaped to reflect changing times. This exhibition spotlights makers who creatively generate these objects in response to our shifting world. \n\n\nFor programming related to this exhibition see the links to the right (desktop)\, bottom (mobile)\, or click here for all upcoming events. \n\n\nFor inquiries or more information\, contact center@craftinamerica.org \n\n\n\n\nVirtual Gallery\nClick and drag\, or use your arrow keys\, to see a 360º view of the virtual space\, including tags with object information and images. \n\nPiñatas as Fantasy\n\nRoberto Benavidez\nBenavidez is a figurative sculptor originally from South Texas\, now based in Los Angeles. After studying bronze casting at Pasadena City College\, Benavidez later switched to paper because it was a more accessible medium. This material shift led him to focus on the piñata technique\, a familiar form from childhood. \nFor his landscape piñatas\, in this case one of the pristine beaches on Santa Rosa in the Channel Islands\, Benavidez uses the feathery qualities of his paper medium and crisp cuts to create reflectivity\, depth\, perspective\, and variations of color and light. \nBenavidez plays with underlying themes of ephemerality\, race\, and sin in his impeccably crafted works. \n\n\n\nRoberto Benavidez\, Javelina Girl (Illuminated Piñata No. 14). 2019. Photo: Courtesy of the artist.\n\n\nRoberto Benavidez\, Illuminated Piñata No. 1\, 2017. His painting series pays homage to the legacy of Mexican and Latin American  masterworks. \nJustin Favela\, Baño de los Pescaditos (after José María Velasco)\, 2019. In response to the 2016 election\, a wall built of hand-crafted piñatas in the form of cinder blocks was installed and ultimately\, at the close of the exhibition\, community members gathered to destroy the proxy wall as one would a piñata\, in an act of defiance against the proposed wall at the border of the US and Mexico. \nSita Kuratomi Bhaumik in collaboration with Cece Carpio\, La Pelanga\, Norma Listman\, People’s Kitchen Collective\, Piñatas Las Morenitas Martínez\, and Little Piñata Maker Estamos contra el muro | We are against the wall\, 2016. Through the inclusion of cartoonish anthropomorphic elements\, each piñata house speaks to the fragility\, history\, and experiences of the marginalized community. \n\n\n\nGiovanni Valderas\, Installation Image of Casita Triste (Sad Little House)\, 2021. After consulting for immigrant-owned businesses and serving as a social worker for immigrant families\, Robletto turned her focus towards the artistry of piñatas and set up a shop in the Los Angeles Piñata District. Her studio and storefront is now located in Mid City\, where her team creates custom piñatas of any scale along with ready-made piñatas and various signature designs. She frequently makes props and commissions for the entertainment industry and other branded events. \n\n\n\nLorena Robletto (Amazing Piñatas)\, Seven Point Star Installation\, 2021. The border city of Rosarito\, Baja California\, is home to a community of up to 250 families who migrated north more than 1\,500 miles from their ancestral homeland located in the island of Janitzio\, Michoacan\, and adopted the making of piñatas as their craft and main source of living. \n\n\n\nDignicraft in collaboration with María Rosa Guzmán Soto\, Eduviges Solorio Morales\, José Raúl Guzmán Soto\, Nadia Iliana Guzmán Solorio\, Bryan Guzmán Solorio\, Evelyn Guzmán Solorio\, María Amparo Guzmán Soto\, Guadalupe Solorio Vargas\, José Vivaldo Jacobo Guzmán\, María De la Luz Solorio Morales\, Javier González Cortez\, Edith González Solorio\, Eréndira Pineda Campos and Leonel Solorio Morales Cheremati (fisherman on canoe) and Nanachi (woman) Installation\, 2015. She began making piñatas in 2014: \nSeven years ago I was diagnosed with cervical cancer and the treatment was a radical hysterectomy. As a response\, my friends threw a farewell party for my uterus. I made a piñata in the shape of a uterus\, filled it with glitter\, condoms\, lube and the tampons I would never need again and destroyed it with a baseball bat. \nSince then\, I wanted to share this awesome piñata with the world. Chace’s many accomplishments and contributions to the County of Los Angeles\, and a place where you may enjoy photos of the lovely Park and find detailed news on Events and the future of this wonderful Park. \nBurton W. Chace Park: 10 acres of lush lawn and trees extend into the Marina’s main channel offering magnificent boat and ocean vistas. Built-in barbecue grills and tables invite picnicing. The free outdoor summer concerts run from July through September each year on Thursday and Saturday nights. \nIf you are into cycling\, the Park is located on the South Bay Bicycle Trail which spans from Will Rogers State Beach to the north in Pacific Palisades to Torrance County Beach in the South at the base of the Palos Verdes Peninsula and the Park is located about halfway between the two points making it an ideal stop along the way. \nBurton W. Chace Park has been the site of many weddings\, scenes on television shows including the OC\, and is home to a wealth of community events throughout the year. The Park office displays historical photographs of Santa Monica\, Playa del Rey\, and the canals of Venice in 1905\, when they were new. There is an excellent history of Marina del Rey on the VisitMarinadelRey.com web site\, and well as history section on this site. We invite you to come experience this wonderful park for yourself sometime soon! \n\nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nbeaches.lacounty.gov/marina-del-rey-events-and-programs\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n
