The 3rd Street Promenade consists of three open-air\, car-free blocks with everything from fresh farmers-market produce to designer fashions. \n\n \nDowntown Santa Monica is equal parts shopping haven and street-performer stage. Just east of the Pier\, the 3rd Street Promenade consists of three open-air\, car-free blocks that are anchored by upscale Santa Monica Place\, home to more than 80 retailers. With everything from fresh farmers market produce to designer fashions\, it’s a shopper’s nirvana. Likewise\, foodies rejoice in the numerous restaurants and bars\, featuring locally sourced ingredients and craft cocktails. DESCRIPTION:CELEBRATING PRIDE THROUGH ART– Los Angeles Coastline\nVenice Pride presents Artist Yvette Mattern’s Global Rainbow installation in association with Bacardi nightly from June 3 to 5 across the California Coast. \n \nYou do not want to miss this large-scale public art light installation. A beacon of diversity and acceptance\, the artwork beams seven rays of laser light representing the color spectrum of a natural rainbow. The presentation is poetic\, magical and powerful. \nThe Global Rainbow is a large-scale public art light installation created by Yvette Mattern. The artwork beams seven rays of laser light representing the color spectrum of a natural rainbow: Red\, Orange\, Yellow\, Green\, Blue\, Indigo\, and Violet. The 120+Wpowerlaserlight projection beaming in parallel horizontal lines creates a natural perspective horizon arc simulating a natural rainbow arc and has a trajectory or viewing spectrum of up to 60 KM depending on atmospheric conditions. \nThe presentation is poetic\, magical\, and powerful. It encompasses the skyline and its viewing perspective is as ephemeral as viewing a natural rainbow. Theoretically and symbolically its presentation encompasses geographical and social diversity in its reach throughout distinct points across the globe. \n \n  \n  \n \nAbout Yvette Mattern\nYvette Mattern is a New York and Berlin-based visual artist whose work has an emphasis on video and film\, which frequently intersects performance\, public art\, and sculpture. Her work has been exhibited internationally. \nYvette Mattern received her MFA in New York City from Columbia University’s Film Division in 1987. She has worked on and collaborated with many artists on film and theater projects including Cindy Sherman’s theatrical feature ‘Office Killer’\, Al Pacino\, Nicolas Cage\, Diller+Scofidio\, and The Builder’s Association among many others. \nHer ongoing monumental laser light installation Global Rainbow has been presented over fifteen times since 2009 including launching the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad in the Northeast\, Northwest England\, and Northern Ireland. \nThe Global Rainbow installation beams seven rays of high specification laser light\, representing the spectrum of the seven colors of the rainbow. The artist had been inspired by seeing an unusual rainbow in a beautiful spot at ‘Walden Pond’ in Massachusetts. Mattern aims to connect all demographics in a beautifully engaging experience. She sees her work as a visual translation of hope and peace. \n  \n  \n  \n\n \nSAVING LIVES THROUGH ACCEPTANCE OF DIVERSITY \n  \nA REBIRTH OF PRIDE\n\n\nFor nearly 100 years Los Angeles’ Westside has been known as a place that celebrates differences. Decades before West Hollywood’s birth\, L.A.’s coastal region was an inclusive oasis home to no fewer than ten gay bars and bathhouses in the ’40s and ‘50s. Among them The Friendship\, Tropical Village\, Jack’s at the Beach\, and the Crystal Baths. Over the years businesses serving the neighborhood came and went\, but by 2006 Roosterfish (est. ’79) was all that remained. A decade later it too would shutter forcing an orphaned community to ponder their place West of the 405. Venice’s first Pride celebration took place on June 3\, 2016\, in an effort to protect an LGBTQ community at risk of extinction due to Roosterfish’s exit. A year later Venice Pride unveiled the Venice Pride Flag Lifeguard Tower\, scored the first NFL team in history to sponsor an LGBT Pride event\, promoted the opening of a new gay bar in Santa Monica\, The Birdcage. Venice Pride’s biggest accomplishment was yet to come. In Fall 2017\, Venice Pride announced amid much fanfare the return of Roosterfish. Made possible through a unique nonprofit partnership with the new operator\, the beloved gathering place held its grand re-opening in June 2018 to coincide with the third annual Venice Pride. \nWhat began as a grassroots push to promote visibility and a renewed sense of community among Westside queer Angelenos each June is blossoming into a year-round organization with programming dedicated to saving lives through acceptance of diversity.Venice Pride is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. SUMMARY:The Museum of Contemporary Art
DESCRIPTION:Barbara Kruger\, Untitled (Questions)- DTLA\n\n  \n\n\nMOCA has reinstalled the monumental wall work by Los Angeles–based artist Barbara Kruger (b. New York 1945)\, Untitled (Questions) (1990/2018). The emblematic red\, white\, and blue artwork was originally commissioned by MOCA in 1989 for the exhibition A Forest of Signs: Art in the Crisis of Representation\, and was last installed in 1990 on the south wall of MOCA’s building (now The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA). The work holds an iconic place in the collective memory of Los Angeles’s art community and is considered one of the museum’s curatorial highlights over its forty-year history. \n\nThis iteration is installed on the north facade of The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA\, facing Temple Street and measuring 30 by 191 feet. Asking nine questions including “Who is beyond the law?\,” “Who is bought and sold?\,” and “Who is free to choose?\,” the work points to issues of patriotism\, civic engagement\, and power relations. In connection with the work\, MOCA led a series of voter registration efforts during the 2018 midterms\, and will continue these efforts in advance of the 2020 general election. \n\nThis project was initiated by MOCA Director Klaus Biesenbach and is organized by MOCA Senior Curator Bennett Simpson. \nThis installation of Barbara Kruger’s Untitled (Questions) is generously supported by an anonymous donor. \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\nONE MUSEUM. DESCRIPTION:OPEN AGAIN 24/7- Santa Monica\nThe Santa Monica Stairs are actually two different stairways\, both of which descend from Santa Monica’s Adelaide Drive to Entrada Drive (Santa Monica Canyon). \n \nThe mis-named “7th Street stairway” has its upper end across from 526 Adelaide Drive\, and leads down to Entrada Drive\, across the street from Amalfi Drive. It consists of 152 wooden steps and 18 concrete steps in a straight path\, about 5.5 feet wide\, separated by three horizontal landings. Altogether the 170 steps produce an overall vertical change of about 110 feet. \n \n\n \nThe “4th-street stairway” begins at the intersection of 4th Street and Adelaide\, leading down to Ocean Avenue Extension. It consists solely of concrete flights interconnected by right- and left-hand turns. There are 189 steps producing an overall vertical change of about 115 feet. \n  \n \nOn the Pacific Palisades side of Santa Monica Canyon is the so-called “secret Mesa stairway”\, which is much less used although it has more steps than either of the above. The base is on Mesa Road\, next to 404 Mesa and about a 10-minute walk from West Channel Road. 201 concrete steps rise about 100 feet to the intersection of Upper Mesa Road and Amalfi Drive. There is no railing except for the topmost 18 steps\, so descending requires caution. (The stairs are sometimes incorrectly called the “La Mesa stairs”–La Mesa Drive is elsewhere in Santa Monica\, and there is a La Mesa Stairway in the city of La Mesa in San Diego County.) \nSeveral other lengthy staircases nearby descend from Palisades Park bluffs to overpasses crossing Pacific Coast Highway to the beach: \n  \n\nThe northernmost crossing near Montana Avenue has 172 steps with a vertical change from Palisades Park to the pedestrian path on the beach of about 110 feet.Separate ramps\, one from the vicinity of Idaho Ave and the other from the top of the California Incline\, converge and share the same bridge crossing to the beach\, with a vertical change of 105 feet from Idaho\, 100 from California. SUMMARY:The Hollywood Cross
DESCRIPTION:The Hollywood Cross\, is better known by it’s official name as the Hollywood Pilgrimage Memorial Monument. And if you’ve ever driven on the 101 freeway through Hollywood\, then you’ve probably have noticed the giant\, illuminated cross on top of a hill just to the north of the Cahuenga exit. \n \nThe Hollywood Cross is a memorial to Christine Stevenson\, a founding member of the Theatre Arts Alliance\, the group who built the Hollywood Bowl. The Alliance began producing plays exclusively with religious themes\, but some members wanted to branch out with some productions of a more secular nature. \n  \n \nMs. Stevenson had no interest in secular productions and in 1920 she built the Pilgrimage Theatre\, named after her new production\, the Pilgrimage Play. \nWhen Stevenson died in 1922\, the Pilgrimage continued to put on the Pilgrimage Play until 1964 when a lawsuit brought the play’s run to its end. This legal action stemmed from concerns about the separation of church and state that came about in 1941\, after the County of Los Angeles was deeded the theatre and the land it was on. \nIn 1976\, The Pilgrimage was renamed John Anson Ford Amphitheater in honor of the former L.A. County Supervisor and today it’s known simply as The Ford. \n  \n \nThe Many Iterations of the Hollywood Cross\nIn 1923\, in honor of Ms. Stevenson\, a giant wooden cross was placed on the hilltop above the Pilgrimage Theater. It was lit up in the evening when her play was being performed in the amphitheater below. \nIn 1993 the current monument — a 32-foot tall memorial of steel and opaque plastic — was put in place and dubbed the Hollywood Pilgrimage Memorial Monument. Two years later\, it was named the Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument #617. \n\nHow to get to the Hollywood Cross\nTo visit the Cross from the Ford Theatre\, walk south along Cahuenga Boulevard East. Right before the intersection with Cahuenga Terrace\, on top of a retaining wall\, you’ll see a narrow trail leading up the hill. This isn’t the most obvious of trails\, so you’ll have to look closely. \nThe hike is short\, but the trail is quite steep. The path isn’t well marked or well groomed\, so come prepared with proper shoes. The hike is challenging\, but eventually you will come to the  top of the hill at the base of the Hollywood Cross. From the top of the hill the views are spectacular. \n  \n\nWhere to Park When Hiking to the Hollywood Cross\nThere’s no parking along Cahuenga Boulevard. Find parking on Cahuenga Terrace\, a small side street just to the south of the cross. On the longest hike\, you can ascend above and behind the Sign’s 45-foot-tall aluminum letters\, where you look out over a windswept vista encompassing the DOOWYLLOH sign\, the dreamy towers of downtown Los Angeles\, and\, on a clear day\, the ageless blue Pacific.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFrom behind\, the Sign reads DOOWYLLOH\nAuthorized hiking trails are open the same hours as Griffith Park\, from Sunrise to Sunset\, 365 days a year.  While enjoying hiking\, please stay on authorized trails. \nPlease beware of the extreme fire danger on the trails\, parts of which are still recovering after a devastating wildfire in 2007. Hollywood Trail\, \noffering a mind-bending side-angle view of the Sign\, has two starting points in Griffith Park\, the 6.5 square miles of protected wilderness AKA the heart and lungs of Los Angeles (Hours: Sunrise – Sunset). The shorter loop hike of about three miles starts at Griffith Observatory’s parking lot\, which is free and fills up early on weekends. \nA slightly longer and steeper trail with fewer people starts on a fire road intersecting N. Vermont Canyon Rd.\, just past the Greek Theater\, where hardy hikers find plenty of street parking. \n\n \nThe Charlie Turner Trailhead marker \n\nThe most popular route up Mt. Hollywood\, the second highest peak in the park\, is suitable for families with children. It begins at the Charlie Turner Trailhead\, named to honor a longtime park volunteer. You can use the restrooms at the Observatory and ask a park ranger about conditions on the trail. Summer can be scorching up there\, so be sure and carry plenty of water. Sandals and flip-flops are not the best footwear in snake country. The trailhead sign and landscaping are at the north end of the Observatory parking lot. The hike begins with a short\, easy ascent along a ridge. \nLook for the Mt. Hollywood trailhead sign and landscaping at the north end of the Observatory parking lot. The hike (where leashed dogs are legal but unleashed ones common) isn’t likely to cross paths with P-22\, the mountain lion that traversed two freeways to take up residence in the wilds of Griffith Park in 2012. Start walking up a short\, easy ascent along a ridge through authentic wild chaparral where you may spot purple and orange wildflowers in the spring and red Toyon berries on California Holly bushes in the fall. In less than a half- mile\, you come upon a cooling grove of pine trees called the Berlin Forest\, planted by real Berliners to honor their sister-city status with Los Angeles. There are tables and benches\, and a beautiful view of the Hollywood Sign framed by pine boughs. Be on the lookout year-round for Zorro-masked Mountain Chickadees in the conifers and orange and yellow flame-headed Western Tanagers in the scrub. \n\nThe entrance to Dante’s View\nAfter another gently up-sloped half-mile\, you reach a four-way crossroads. The left fork goes around the west side of Mt. Hollywood toward a rest stop called Captain’s Roost. The right fork leads around the east side to a well-kept “folk” garden called Dante’s View. The Friends of Griffith Park have recently been planting and nurturing more native plants around the rest stop gardens\, which were severely burned in 2007. Both provide shade (there’s also a water fountain at Dante’s View) and restorative views of the Observatory and the city to the south and the Hollywood Sign to the west. The 1\,625-foot Mt. Hollywood summit is about one-quarter mile beyond both stops and consists of a coastal sage scrubby knob with protective railing. The slightly cockeyed view of the letters in the Hollywood Sign is from a perspective just a few degrees off dead center\, and almost directly at eye level. READ MORE \n\n \n\nMODERATE:\nThe Brush Canyon Trail\, \nalso part of Griffith Park\, features a fun side trip to Adam West’s Bat Cave\, home of the Batmobile in the 60’s Batman TV series. Locals know it as Bronson Caves\, and there’s a small parking lot close to the trailhead on Canyon Drive and an overflow dirt parking lot just down the road. The trail offers sensational views of the city and ends behind the Hollywood Sign. The old rock quarry tunnel has figured in many movies\, from 1925’s Riders of the Purple Sage to 2010’s Megashark vs. Crocosaurus. \n\n \nA view from the Brush Canyon Trail. hike \n\nThe 6.5-mile trail to the Sign climbs more than a thousand feet through several healthy ecosystems\, so hikers need to give it three hours and carry plenty of water. If there aren’t too many unleashed dogs\, you might see mule deer\, bobcats\, coyotes\, and rattlesnakes. Look up for Cooper’s Hawks soaring in the thermals over the Sign and down for honeybees probing the wildflowers. READ MORE \nNOTE: Reservations are NOT currently required on this hike. However\, access might be closed off during the day depending on overcrowding. \n \nDIFFICULT:CLOSED\nThe Cahuenga Peak Hike\,\nacross a short saddle from Mt. Lee\, runs through the latest 138-acre addition to Griffith Park and offers wide angle views of the Hollywood Reservoir and the San Fernando Valley. Suitable for the more experienced hiker\, it begins on the Aileen Getty Ridge Trail and includes the Hugh Hefner Overlook\, both named for two of the many benefactors and community activists who raised the money to save the land from a luxury housing development in 2012. \n \nThe trail is more rugged and less defined than the Canyon Blvd. trail. It includes the famous Wisdom Tree and traverses an area where the park’s resident mountain lion\, P-22\, has been spotted (usually after dark when the park is closed). The California African American Museum’s mission is to research\, collect\, preserve\, and interpret for public enrichment the history\, art\, and culture of African Americans with an emphasis on California and the western United States. \n \n  \n  \nCAAM’s permanent collection consists of over 4\,000 objects ranging from the 1800s to the present. It encompasses paintings\, photographs\, film\, sculpture\, historical documents\, and artifacts\, and it spans nineteenth-century landscape paintings to modern artworks to contemporary mixed-media reflections on cultural and political events. \n \n  \nThe Museum’s first acquisitions included a bronze bust of civil rights activist Dr. Mary Mcleod Bethune by artist Richmond Barthé and a sculpture by artist Maren Hassinger\, then at the start of her career. These laid the perfect groundwork for CAAM’s mandate to assemble a comprehensive\, thoughtful\, and wide-reaching collection. \n \n  \nCAAM’s deepest holdings include art made or connected to African Americans in California and the western United States. However\, the Museum also has significant works of contemporary art from the African diaspora (including Haiti\, Brazil\, and Jamaica)\, as well as traditional African art from Western\, Central\, and Sub-Saharan Africa. CAAM aims to represent the diverse contributions of African Americans in the United States\, but also to interpret how the past has affected identity in the present. \n  \n  \nToday\, CAAM oversees\, exhibits\, and conserves a rapidly growing collection. Each quarter\, curators review the current holdings and decide as a committee on future acquisitions. The band was formed in 1981 in Los Angeles by vocalist/guitarist James Hetfield and drummer Lars Ulrich\, and has been based in San Francisco for most of its career. The band’s fast tempos\, instrumentals and aggressive musicianship made them one of the founding “big four” bands of thrash metal\, alongside Megadeth\, Anthrax and Slayer. Metallica’s current lineup comprises founding members and primary songwriters Hetfield and Ulrich\, longtime lead guitarist Kirk Hammett and bassist Robert Trujillo. Guitarist Dave Mustaine (who went on to form Megadeth after being fired from the band) and bassists Ron McGovney\, Cliff Burton (who died in a bus accident in Sweden in 1986) and Jason Newsted are former members of the band. \n  \n \nMetallica earned a growing fan base in the underground music community and won critical acclaim with its first five albums. The band’s third album\, Master of Puppets (1986)\, was described as one of the heaviest and most influential thrash metal albums. Its eponymous fifth album\, Metallica (1991)\, the band’s first to root predominantly in heavy metal\, appealed to a more mainstream audience\, achieving substantial commercial success and selling over 16 million copies in the United States to date\, making it the best-selling album of the SoundScan era. \nMetallica\, like most of the music industry right now\, is off the road.
