Mindfulness Meditation is the moment-by-moment process of actively and openly observing one’s physical\, mental\, and emotional experiences. Mindfulness has scientific support as a means to reduce stress\, improve attention\, boost the immune system\, reduce emotional reactivity\, and promote a general sense of health and well-being. These half hour weekly sessions are open to all who are interested in learning how to live more presently in life. No special clothing is required\, and participants are welcome to join for five minutes or enjoy the entire 30 minutes.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThese free weekly drop-in sessions usually take place in the Hammer’s Billy Wilder Theater but are now offered live online via Zoom. \nMindful Awareness Meditation is provided by UCLA & The Hammer Museum\n  \nff \n\nSessions are led by Diana Winston and other instructors from the UCLA Mindful Awareness Research Center. DESCRIPTION:OPEN THURSDAY – SUNDAY- Santa Monica\nThe Santa Monica History Museum was founded under the “Historical Activities Committee” of Santa Monica’s Centennial Celebration in 1975 and by a public poll\, with their goal to collect\, preserve\, and be the caretaker of history. Its name at that time was the Santa Monica Historical Society and it was designated as the official collector and preserver of the history\, art\, and culture of the Santa Monica Bay Area. Former Mayor Clo Hoover\, the first woman mayor of Santa Monica\, was elected the first president. \n\nThe museum\, one of the largest in the country for a city the size of Santa Monica\, has grown far beyond expectations with an expansive collection of artifacts\, photographs\, and memorabilia. Thousands of hours have been dedicated to public education and museum services. \n \nWith the help of Louise and Bob Gabriel who had been active in the community for years and had a strong love for Santa Monica and its history took on the responsibility to make the museum a reality.  Within three years\, with determination\, perseverance\, and countless hours of work\, Bob headed the fundraising committee and raised the necessary funds. Louise was able to get all the furnishings for the museum donated by companies that were going out of business. Bob found a temporary rent‐free location on Colorado Avenue. \n\n\nOur Mission\nThe Santa Monica History Museum’s mission is to collect\, preserve and share the history and culture of Santa Monica for generations to come. \n\n\n\n\nOur Vision\nThe Santa Monica History Museum is the steward of the rich history of the Santa Monica Bay area. We are committed to enriching our community by providing public access to our extensive collection with interpretive exhibitions\, public programs\, community partnerships\, and through archival and research services. \n\n\n\nCURRENT EXHIBITION FROM APRIL 1 – DECEMBER 23\, 2022\nBroadway to Freeway:\nLife and Times of a Vibrant Community\n \nIn the mid-20th century\, the Broadway neighborhood was a thriving\, tight-knit community in Santa Monica. Built by African American\, Mexican American\, and immigrant communities\, the Broadway neighborhood was a haven for those who were excluded from other parts of the city by racist and anti-immigrant policies and practices. \nThis exhibition tells the story of how residents built Broadway into a flourishing community of color – and how the Interstate 10 freeway destroyed it in the 1960s. The vibrant lives of pioneering individuals – like the first African American teacher and social worker hired in Santa Monica – are knitted into the neighborhood they built together. The community populated Broadway with welcoming schools\, homes\, and businesses – from beauty parlors and jazz clubs\, to the malt shop\, tortilleria\, and Jewish deli. \n \nFeaturing period photographs\, advertisements\, oral histories\, and songs\, the exhibition draws on the wealth of archival material collected by the Quinn Research Center\, which is dedicated to preserving the history of African American life in Santa Monica. \nToday\, little evidence remains of the community on the blocks between 13th Street and 20th Street\, once the heart of the Broadway neighborhood. It’s the real sport of kings\, and it’s found its home here at Brennan’s for 45 years. In 1975\, then-owner Ab Lawrence brought “the world’s stupidest sport” to Marina del Rey as a lark\, hoping that he could attract a few people for a couple of weeks. But the turtles knew how to draw a crowd\, so the races kept going. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHere’s how it works\n\n\n\n\nEvery first and third Thursday\, the turtles come out of their turtle sanctuary and start limbering up. Come 8:30pm\, the first race starts and five turtles will enter the center of the ring. First one that makes it out of circle wins. It’s as simple as that! \nThink you’ve got a hot tip on who’s gonna win? Pay for a ticket to put your name in your favored turtle’s hat. If they win\, your name might get called—and you’ll get to win a prize from our prize wheel. Plus\, all of the money goes to charity! \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThere’s only one rule…\n\n\nNo pointing! Our turtles get shy. If caught\, well… you’ll just have to come to a race to find out what the punishment is. \n​Forty-five years in\, and the turtles have shuffled out of the ring over 10\,000 times. Centuries later\, it is this union of fugitive and shaman blood that runs through Daniel’s veins\, injecting a much needed outlaw spirit into western yoga. \n \nHaving earned his teaching certification through his studies and apprenticeship with ashtanga vinyasa masters in Mysore\, India\, Daniel has been bringing donation-based vinyasa yoga to the people since 2005. The building and grounds are accessible for all visitors. The building is busiest on weekends\, during summer and holiday periods\, and at sunset. \n\nGriffith Observatory’s grounds and roads are generally open the same hours as Griffith Park\, 5:00 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.\, every day. Access to Griffith Park is free\, though there is paid parking closest to the Observatory. There are public restrooms located next to the Observatory parking lot. Trailheads on Observatory grounds lead to Mount Hollywood\, the Greek Theatre area\, and Fern Dell. \n\n\nDaily Programs\n\nSamuel Oschin Planetarium\n\n\nOur most prominent daily programs are the shows in the Samuel Oschin Planetarium\, With its spectacular Zeiss star projector\, digital projection system\, state-of-the-art aluminum dome\, comfy seats\, sound system\, and theatrical lighting\, the 290-seat Samuel Oschin Planetarium theater is the finest planetarium in the world. Every show is presented by a live\, engaging storyteller\, and one of our three current shows is offered every 60 to 90 minutes each day the Observatory is open. \n\nPublic Telescopes\nthe Observatory offers many other stellar experiences while you visit. During the day\, you can see the live image of the Sun on our coelostat (solar telescope) in the Ahmanson Hall of the Sky. DESCRIPTION:EVERY THIRD THURSDAY- Autry Museum\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us monthly at the Autry Museum to enjoy an evening al fresco at the Odd Market\, an “indie” bazaar with food trucks\, live music\, and the coolest SoCal vendors for crafts\, vintage items\, home goods\, and oddities. After a 2 year covid induced sabbatical\, we are coming back with Odd Nights at The Autry for our 7th season. For those that have enjoyed Odd Nights in the past\, we are excited to see you again with new sellers\, new food trucks\, and some new additions\, such as these cool picnic tables to rent and we have a couple food vendors that are looking at pre-selling charcuterie boards and other specialty items. \nThose of you have never experienced Odd Nights\, you are in for a treat! Odd Nights is the hidden gem of events located at the Autry Museum which is directly across from the LA Zoo. You can park at either the Autry or the LA Zoo for free. \n \nAdmission is only $5. Kids under 12 are free.\nBring a blanket\, your appetite and arrive early and stay late every third Friday from 6pm – 10PM. Odd Nights at The Autry runs April through September. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDon’t forget our live music lineup\, full bar and insane inflatables. The Haus is comprised of mother Bibi Discoteca as well as daughters Sucia Discoteca and Muñeca Discoteca (October 2017). This Haus brings magnetic energy\, passionate performances and breathtaking ensembles to ANY space they enter. They are committed to the self\, devoted to support the collective reach their goals and most importantly here to have a good time! \nRomancer is a born and bred Los Angeles DJ with his ear to the sheets. Inspired by themes of love\, lust\, and loss\, he’s unafraid to play where his heart takes him. With a history as a radio DJ that started in his bedroom as a teen\, he has recently taken the leap into playing club nights and underground parties around the city. As part of the duo Starcrossed\, he and DJ partner Gia\, explore the possibilities of fun and friendship. \nMez: If you’ve spent any time going to parties (or livestreams) in Los Angeles over the past few years\, you’ve probably seen the name Mez on a couple flyers. The up-and-coming DJ has quickly become a regular at some of the city’s best-known parties\, bringing a fresh but decidedly old-school vibe. He’s a young selector who plays ’90s house in a way that feels new and exciting and classic all at once—you can hear influences from the old guard in the smooth way he mixes and how long he lets the songs play out\, but you can also imagine his excitement at hearing these old records for the first time and wanting to share them with everyone else. In the right hands\, even the most obvious record can become new. \nAlex Chapman is one of today’s most exciting DJs. A master of mixing pop nostalgia and the newest sounds\, Chapman has played for some of the biggest names in music and fashion (Dior\, Spotify\, Bella Hadid and Cardi B to name a few)\, and just recently completed a US/European tour opening for superstar Kim Petras. With his new single “Horsey” (featuring Petras) coming out May 20th\, it’s easy to see why publications like the New York Times\, Billboard and Paper Magazine have highlighted this rising talent.
