Described as a “sonic mirage of prophetic soul\,” they are songs about “memory and imprinting and the future\, all of them wafting through untouched space like the ghostly cinders of a world on fire\, unbound and uncharted\, vast and stretching across the universe.” The album overall is described as though “a multitude of instruments and voices flocked to the ether to create something strange and unknown\, a time-traveler’s guide to the modern world.” Ayewa will also debut a new poem titled “Skid Row Future.” \nMembers of the liberation-oriented\, free-jazz collective Irreversible Entanglements\, of which Ayewa is a member and vocalist\, improvise and punctuate soundscapes in reaction to the site and other performers. \nMoor Mother-collaborator Yatta Zoker performs an opening set. A multimedia artist and musician\, they use incantations born of loop pedal drones\, channeled screams\, and improvised poetry to explore connections between psychosis\, prayer\, and presence. \nLooping throughout the evening are short films by the award-winning interdisciplinary art practice Black Quantum Futurism\, of which Ayewa is one-half\, along with artist\, author\, community activist\, and lawyer Rasheedah Phillips. \nABOUT THE ARTISTS \nCamae Ayewa\, aka Moor Mother\, is an international touring musician\, poet\, visual artist\, and workshop facilitator\, and has performed at numerous festivals\, colleges\, galleries\, and museums\, sharing the stage with King Britt\, Roscoe Mitchell\, Claudia Rankine\, bell hooks\, and more. Moor Mother’s debut album\, Fetish Bones\, was named third best album of the year by The Wire and best album by Jazz Right Now. Ayewa is a 2016 Leeway Transformation awardee\, a Blade of Grass 2016 Fellow as part of Black Quantum Futurism\, a 2017 Pew Fellow\, The Kitchen’s Inaugural Emerging Artist Awardee in 2017\, and the Rad Girls 2016 Philly artist of the year. She has been an artist-in-residence at West Philadelphia Neighborhood Time Exchange and WORM! Rotterdam. \nIrreversible Entanglements are a free-jazz collective formed in early 2015 by saxophonist Keir Neuringer\, poet Camae Ayewa (a.k.a. Moor Mother)\, and bassist Luke Stewart\, who came together to perform at a Musicians Against Police Brutality (MAPB) event organized after the slaying of Akai Gurley by the NYPD. Months later the group added trumpeter Aquiles Navarro and drummer Tcheser Holmes (a duo who also performed at the MAPB event) for a single day of recording at Seizure’s Palace in Brooklyn. The full quintet’s first time playing together was recorded for their debut self-titled album which arrived to wide critical acclaim\, hailed by many as one of the Best Albums of 2017 including NPR\, The Wire\, and Stereogum. Their second album\, Who Sent You?\, was released in 2020\, and a new record\, Open the Gates\, will be released this November. \nYatta Zoker is an artist\, performer\, and musician. Most recently\, they released DIAL UP\, a collaborative album with Moor Mother. In 2019\, their album WAHALA served as the foundation for An Episode: Ricky’s Room\, written and performed by Zoker and commissioned by The Shed in New York City. Over the years\, Zoker has shared the stage with musicians like Cardi B and The Sun Ra Akestra\, creating multimedia performances that tour astrally\, nationally\, and globally. Their work has been featured in Nylon\, The Creative Independent\, Pitchfork\, Tiny Mixtapes\, The Wire\, and more. \nBlack Quantum Futurism is a multidisciplinary collaboration between Camae Ayewa and Rasheedah Phillips exploring the intersections of futurism\, creative media\, DIY-aesthetics\, and activism in marginalized communities through an alternative temporal lens. BQF Collective has created a number of community-based events\, experimental music projects\, performances\, exhibitions\, zines\, and anthologies of experimental essays on space-time consciousness. BQF Collective is a 2016 A Blade of Grass Fellow\, a 2015 artist-in-residence at West Philadelphia Neighborhood Time Exchange\, and had their experimental short\, Black Bodies as Conductors of Gravity\, premiere at the 2015 Afrofuturism Now! Borrow for 3 weeks\, with the option to renew\, if available. \nPlease note: Laptop & Hotspot Loan Kits require a full access card to check out. When can I pick up my Laptop & Hotspot?\nCall the owning library and arrange to pick up your kit during Sidewalk Service hours.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n4. How long can I keep the Laptop & Hotspot Loan? Can I renew?\nThe kits can be borrowed for 3 weeks. If no other customers are on the waiting list\, the checkout can be renewed up to 3 times. How do I return the Chromebook Kit?\nChromebooks must be returned in person to the owning library during Sidewalk Service hours. They cannot be returned in the bookdrop. Staff will bring out a box labeled Laptop Return to the Sidewalk Service table. You’ll be instructed to remove all items – the Chromebook\, the wireless hotspot\, and both charging cables – from the carrying case. Put the case into the box first\, on the bottom\, and then put all other items in on top. Staff will check the box to make sure all items are inside and that they look fine. All items will be quarantined for 4 days and confirmed to be working properly before being checked in. Staff will contact you if there are any questions or concerns. Please remember that the loan will still show on your account until the quarantine and check-in process is complete.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n6. DESCRIPTION:EVERY TUESDAY – SUNDAY- 3rd Street\n\nPINATAS: THE HIGH ART OF CELEBRATION\n9/4/2021 – 12/4/2021\n\n\nThe Craft in America Center is pleased to present a dynamic in-person and virtual exhibition of about fifty works made by fifteen artists and artist collectives from across the U.S. and Mexico\, which focuses on the overlooked craft of handmade piñatas and piñata-based art objects. \n\nPiñatas: The High Art of Celebration at Craft in America\, Gallery Installation View. Photo: Madison Metro\, Craft in America.\nPiñatas: The High Art of Celebration at Craft in America\, Gallery Installation View. Photo: Madison Metro\, Craft in America.\n\nPiñatas\, ubiquitous and often the focal point of parties and festive occasions across the U.S.\, are handcrafted and ephemeral objects that signify happiness\, joy\, release\, and celebration. This exhibition touches on the role that they play in modern material culture and how they are made to embody social commentary\, along with the ways that artists address piñatas as conceptual and technical launching points for their vision. \nThe work of traditional piñata artisans is presented alongside the creations of artists who reinvent and reinterpret the piñata through engaging sculptural practices. The contemporary artists featured in this exhibition reconsider the techniques\, materials\, form\, function\, and notion of the piñata\, forming a new language for expression. \nPiñatas are a deeply rooted Mexican tradition that has become widespread and beloved across cultures. Piñatas are accessible by nature and made from relatively humble materials. They are shapeshifters that can be created to take any form\, be that of a creature\, shape\, figure\, or idea. Considering their popularity in our lives and how many memories are made around piñata play\, this contemporary form of cultural craft has been relatively unexamined. \nAs creators of material culture\, craft makers design and build the relics of our everyday\, modern world. This exhibition touches on the ephemeral and performative nature of certain forms of craft. Craft today plays a part in our traditions\, our celebrations\, our relationships\, and it deepens how we experience life\, even when it is destroyed or discarded after use. \nPiñatas are intertwined with childhood experiences\, gatherings of family and friends\, and celebratory turning points in life– all of which have become much more precious to us in this era of COVID. As markers of these events\, piñatas have new resonance and meaning today. They continue to be shaped to reflect changing times. After studying bronze casting at Pasadena City College\, Benavidez later switched to paper because it was a more accessible medium. This material shift led him to focus on the piñata technique\, a familiar form from childhood. \nFor his landscape piñatas\, in this case one of the pristine beaches on Santa Rosa in the Channel Islands\, Benavidez uses the feathery qualities of his paper medium and crisp cuts to create reflectivity\, depth\, perspective\, and variations of color and light. \nBenavidez plays with underlying themes of ephemerality\, race\, and sin in his impeccably crafted works. \n\n\n\nRoberto Benavidez\, Javelina Girl (Illuminated Piñata No. 14). 2019. Photo: Courtesy of the artist.\n\n\nRoberto Benavidez\, Illuminated Piñata No. 1\, 2017. Her piñatas reflect her experiences growing up along the San Diego/Tijuana border\, her identity\, and culture. She began making piñatas in 2014: \nSeven years ago I was diagnosed with cervical cancer and the treatment was a radical hysterectomy. As a response\, my friends threw a farewell party for my uterus. I made a piñata in the shape of a uterus\, filled it with glitter\, condoms\, lube and the tampons I would never need again and destroyed it with a baseball bat. \nSince then\, I wanted to share this awesome piñata with the world. SUMMARY:Roundhouse Aquarium
DESCRIPTION:OPEN DAILY- Manhattan Beach Pier\nThe Roundhouse Aquarium is located at the end of the Manhattan Beach Pier. The Roundhouse has undergone a recent revitalization through a $4 million capital project spearheaded by the Harrison Greenberg Foundation. The new Roundhouse Aquarium educates and inspires more than 300\,000 visitors every year. It is managed and operated by the nonprofit oceanic and environmental organization Oceanographic Teaching Stations\, Inc. (OTS)\, whose mission is to connect and engage visitors and students to the oceans through hands-on interactive experiences with marine life and habitats of southern California\, and to inspire them to become good stewards of our environment. \nOTS’ programs at the Roundhouse Aquarium promote the study of the oceans\, tidelands and beaches of Southern California through a wide slate of science-based and standards-aligned education programs with its immersive and engaging exhibits of a diverse array of marine life.  More than 100 marine animals from Southern California’s waters live at the aquarium\, many are native to its local waters in the Santa Monica Bay. Notable wildlife include moon jellies\, sharks\, octopus\, sheepshead\, moray eels\, lobsters\, and more – as well as a touch tank with sea stars\, sea cucumbers\, sea urchins and sea snails. The aquarium prides itself on being family oriented. It’s a great place for kids to take their parents! \n\n\n\n\n\nCome SEA our Marine Exhibits\nGet to know the habitats within Southern California by visiting our diverse marine exhibits. These exhibits are showcased within 4 Aquarium Galleries. \n\n\nMarine Habitat Gallery\n\nRocky Reef Tank \nThe Rocky Reef shows us what reefs in the cold California waters look like. They are similar to coral reefs but are made up of rocks instead of corals. They are just as important of a habitat as coral reefs and often serve as a nursery for many types of juvenile fish. \nKelp Forest Tank \nThe Kelp Forest tank represents a distinct southern California marine habitat. This tank shows us what it looks like to swim at the edge of the kelp forest\, where rocks become scarcer and sand more plentiful. Many of the animals in the tank can live their life deep within the kelp forest or at the very edge. Those animals at the edges can even camouflage in the sand. \n\n\n\n\nEducation Gallery\n\nDeep Kelp Forest Tank\nThese tanks represent a very diverse and abundant habitat\, the kelp forest! The giant kelp that grows 2 feet a day\, provides food and shelter for many different animals. Not only is this habitat important for animals\, but it is also important to humans as well! Seaweeds\, like kelp\, produce about 70% of our oxygen through photosynthesis. So\, take a deep breath and thank kelp! \nTide Pool Tank\nAll the animals that you can find in our touch tank live in a habitat called a tide pool. When the tide is low and the water has receded\, pools of water are left in between rocks which form the tide pools. In Southern California\, we have 2 high tides and 2 low tides every day\, which means the animals’ habitat is always changing. They must have special adaptations that allow them to live in such a dynamic habitat. \nPier Piling Tank\nHave you ever wondered what is under the pier? This tank will give you a good idea! Pier pilings\, while man made\, do create a habitat for lots of animals ranging from mussels\, to crabs\, to fish and rays. The fish can either hide amongst the mussels or lay on the sand under the pier among the rays. \n\n\n\n \n\n\nMarine Science Gallery\n\nJewel Tank\nSee our animals in the spotlight with cool adaptive traits like our spotted rose anemone that has biofluorescence and our baby swell shark eggs that can camouflage as seaweed. The baby swell sharks are really cute when they hatch out too! \nPipefish Tank\nThe Pipefish tank is an example of a mudflat with eelgrass beds that act as a nursery for young fish and young sting rays. See if you can spot a pipefish in the eelgrass. \nArtificial Reef Tank\nThe Artificial Reef tank is an examples of man-made structures left behind that now act as reefs teaming with life from sea anemones on rock scallops to sea stars to juvenile rockfish. The Garden is a masterpiece of creative land reclamation and environment improvement for all to share. There are several areas of the Garden where you can find California Native Plants in the landscape and gardens. The primary areas are the landscaping around the Greenhouse Complex\, the Mediterranean Garden\, and the El Rincon Garden at the corner of the Tram Road and the Service Yard road marked by the rustic lodge pole pergola. \n  \n \nChildren’s Garden and Children’s Discovery Garden\nOur most popular among young people\, this garden is developed around nursery rhymes with plants to match the stories. An enchanted dollhouse and bridge enhance the setting. Adjacent to the Children’s Garden is the Discovery Garden with a secret tunnel\, worm bin\, alphabet garden\, butterfly garden\, and whimsical characters. \n  \n \nThe New Rose Garden \nEvery view in the remarkable new Rose Garden (First Bloom coming April 2018) is breathtaking. Hand-crafted\, wrought iron fence-work depicts rose emblems\, rounded staircases gently welcome guests in\, rich warm wood tones envelop architectural structures\, a large fountain features an exquisite glass mosaic\, and of course\, colorful roses drip from every crevice. A grand guest entrance provides a magnificent overview of the formally planted space\, allowing guests to catch a glimpse of the beautiful asymmetrical design created by renowned landscape architect\, Deborah Richie-Bray\, who is known for her work at the Getty Villa. Undulating pathways guide gently through a labyrinth of planted beds and sculptural elements. Two cabana structures flank the central court and provide shade on a hot day. The celebration lawn houses several formal entrance paths that lead to a grand pergola with a raised plaza which will serve as a “stage” for events and ceremonies. \nThe more than 80 rose selections feature a variety of forms\, from climbers to ground covers. The choice of fragrant roses such as the David Austin English\, create a space of beauty in sight and scent. Rose cultivars have also been chosen by theme (the Flower Girl lines the potential bride’s path) and color (notice the ombré effect from peach to pink to red on the eastern side.) Some of the oldest varieties were hybridized in the 1800’s including Barrone Prevoset and Madame Plantier. These along with 20 rare cultivars were saved from the original garden. The Rose Garden has a unique planting design that will provide year-round appeal with plenty of non-rose companion plantings to ensure a lush experience. While typically rose gardens close for pruning when the main event plants have been clipped down to bare sticks\, the layered and diverse plant palette of this garden will provide delight year-round. Watch for bursts of purple jacaranda\, hot pink crape myrtle\, and powdery pink cherry blossoms up high\, and lower to the ground seek out blooming paper whites\, sage\, boxwood and succulents. \n  \n \nDesert Garden\nThe Desert Garden includes cacti\, euphorbia\, aloes\, and other succulents. The garden is an excellent exhibition of specimens from the United States\, Africa\, Mexico\, and South America. \n \nJapanese Garden/Koi Pond\nGarden maintained with a Bonsai Display by South Coast Bonsai Association. Enjoy listening to the calming sounds of water and taking in the subdued palette of evergreen shrubbery embracing the Koi Pond. The stone lanterns were crafted of Okazaki Stone over 200 years ago in a region said to be the capital of Japan’s stone craft. \nMediterranean Garden\nMediterranean refers to a unique climate consisting of mild\, cool\, rainy winters and hot\, dry summers seen in only five places in the world: coastal California\, the Mediterranean Basin\, southwest Australia\, the southwest Cape of South Africa\, and coastal Chile. California native plants are emphasized here. Mediterranean plants are environmentally friendly because they require very little supplemental water once established. Native plants have the added benefit of providing food and shelter to wildlife and pollinators. \nDisplay Greenhouse\nThe Display Greenhouse is open to the public from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm daily. Designed with the color palette in mind\, the colors range from warm to cool tones. Inside the greenhouse you will find a display of a variety of tropical plants such as: Adenium\, Anthurium\, Begonia\, Bromeliad\, Carnivorous plants\, Cordyline\, Croton\, Orchids\, Hoya\, and Passionflower vine. \nFuchsia Garden\nEstablished and maintained by the South Coast Branch of the National Fuchsia Society\, this garden contains many different species\, cultivars\, and new introductions. Overhead shade cloth filters strong sunlight to allow fuchsias and other shade-loving plants to thrive. \nGarden for the Senses\nThis garden encourages you to enjoy plants and flowers by smell\, touch\, sound\, and sight. Plants are arranged in raised beds so they can easily be touched or smelled. Individual plant labels identify which senses the plant engages. \nAnd more! \nMust Visit Place for All Nature Lovers\nThe South Coast Botanic Garden serves the community in various ways by providing a unique horticultural and wildlife habitat experience. DESCRIPTION:OPEN EVERYDAY- Griffith Park\nThe Old LA Zoo\, or The Griffith Park Zoo\, opened in 1912 and closed in 1966 with the opening of the new\, Los Angeles Zoo. The abandoned site of the Griffith Park Zoo\, complete with the ruins of animal enclosures\, is now a picnic area and hiking trail in Griffith Park. \n  \n \nThe Old LA Zoo opened in 1912 with a grand total of only 15 animals. Bears\, Lions\, Monkeys\, Macaw’s\, Elephants\, Reptiles\, Goats\, and Turtles now lived in the zoo\, which was built on the original site of Griffith J. Griffith‘s defunct ostrich farm. \n  \n \nAs Los Angeles grew\, the small Griffith Park Zoo was increasingly criticized as an “inadequate\, ugly\, poorly designed despite drawing more than 2 million visitors a year.  \nIn 1958\, the city decided to create a brand new zoo\, and the Griffith Park Zoo closed in August 1966. Its animals were transferred to the new Los Angeles Zoo 2 miles away\, which opened a few months later. \n  \n \nThe animal enclosures\, with the bars removed\, were left as ruins and remain today. A large picnic area was added\, and NOW every summer\, the zoo is the location for the Independent Shakespeare Company’s  Free “Shakespeare in the Park” performances. \nThe Old Zoo is located on Griffith Park Dr. Only 2 miles from today’s LA Zoo\,   \n  \n \nUpon arriving\, you will see a small parking lot. Follow the path Up the hill to reach the abandoned enclosure.  \nUpon arriving\, you will enter many of the original Grotto’s. Audiences can go online to watch the LA Philharmonic perform at the Hollywood Bowl. Their new series is called SOUND/STAGE. \nThe LA Phil won’t hold live performances until at least June 2021. But you can now virtually watch them play at the Hollywood Bowl. The new series is called SOUND/STAGE. \n \nSOUND/STAGE is a new online collection of concert films and interviews\, essays\, and artwork that offer deeper insights into the music. Performances range from orchestral concerts featuring Gustavo Dudamel and the LA Phil to sets from Kamasi Washington\, Andra Day\, and Chicano Batman. \nEach week there’s a different program. Gustavo Dudamel conducts Gustav Mahler one week\, and Jazz composer Kamasi Washington performs another week. Other musicians include Chicano Batman and Andra Day. DESCRIPTION:FREE BOOK EXCHANGE BOXES Various Location around LA\nThrough Little Free Library book exchanges\, millions of books are exchanged each year\, profoundly increasing access to books for readers of all ages and backgrounds. \n  \n \n  \n  \nWhy Does Book Access Matter?\nAcademically\, children growing up in homes without books are on average three years behind children in homes with lots of books\, even when controlled for other key factors. One of the most successful ways to improve the reading achievement of children is to increase their access to books\, especially at home. But two out of three children living in poverty have no books to call their own. \n  \n \nBook-sharing boxes play an essential role by providing 24/7 access to books (and encouraging a love of reading!) in areas where books are scarce. \nAt the Little Free Library nonprofit\, we’re working to fill book deserts and place libraries where they can make a big impact through our Impact Library Program. We’ve donated more than 1\,000 libraries through this program to-date. \n  \n \n  \nThe Los Angeles area is already home to almost 75 such libraries; use the Little Free Library map to find exact addresses for boxes in Hollywood\, Culver City\, Westchester\, Marina Del Rey\, Burbank\, and beyond. More locations will certainly be springing up soon. \n  \n \n  \nOur staff is dedicated to increasing book access and forging community connections.  Watch the adjacent video to get a 30-second introduction to learn how you can start one\, too! \n  \n \n  \n  \nWe provide ongoing support to Little Free Library volunteer stewards\, offering free library-building instructions\, an online store with pre-built library models and kits\, access to free or discounted books\, and an e-newsletter full of ideas and advice.
