At the time\, Los Angeles was the country’s tenth-most-populous city—and downtown was the epicenter of a flourishing metropolis. \nToday\, the Market’s 40 stalls are home to an only-in-LA blend of legacy vendors like China Cafe and Roast To Go (Grand Central Market tenants for over half a century)\, rising stars\, and success stories from the city’s buzzing food scene. The Market is a microcosm of the historic immigrant communities that have shaped Los Angeles and a mosaic of the creativity and vision of the people who call this city home. \nGrand Central Market has been part of the LA story from the very beginning. We feel lucky to be woven into the founding fabric that makes this city shine and steal hearts—inspiring people from all over the world to come\, see\, explore\, and discover. To this day\, there’s always room at our table\, and the whole city here for the tasting. \n\n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nhttps://grandcentralmarket.com/bazaar/\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

SUMMARY:Hike To The Hollywood Sign
DESCRIPTION:HIKING TO THE SIGN\nThe Hollywood Sign is the most famous icon of the city of Los Angeles\, and there are three routes below ranked from easy to difficult. The Mt Hollywood Trail\, The Brush Canyon Trail\, and The Cahuenga Peak Trail (currently closed)\n\nStunning views of the Hollywood Sign unfold at your own pace on hiking trails that meander through the rolling chaparral of the Santa Monica Mountains.  Trails originally blazed by paws\, hooves\, and yucca-thatched moccasins now connect us to cultural as well as natural wonders. The western frontier of Griffith Park offers hikers amazingly close encounters with the Sign\, which is off-limits to human hands\, just below the ridgeline at the 1\,708-foot summit of Mt. Lee. On the longest hike\, you can ascend above and behind the Sign’s 45-foot-tall aluminum letters\, where you look out over a windswept vista encompassing the DOOWYLLOH sign\, the dreamy towers of downtown Los Angeles\, and\, on a clear day\, the ageless blue Pacific.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFrom behind\, the Sign reads DOOWYLLOH\nAuthorized hiking trails are open the same hours as Griffith Park\, from Sunrise to Sunset\, 365 days a year.  While enjoying hiking\, please stay on authorized trails. \nPlease beware of the extreme fire danger on the trails\, parts of which are still recovering after a devastating wildfire in 2007. Trespassing is illegal. A LAPD officer is stationed near the Sign\, which is protected by a fence and security cameras 24 hours a day. Thank you. \n \nEasy Way:\nThe Mt. Hollywood Trail\, \noffering a mind-bending side-angle view of the Sign\, has two starting points in Griffith Park\, the 6.5 square miles of protected wilderness AKA the heart and lungs of Los Angeles (Hours: Sunrise – Sunset). The shorter loop hike of about three miles starts at Griffith Observatory’s parking lot\, which is free and fills up early on weekends. \nA slightly longer and steeper trail with fewer people starts on a fire road intersecting N. Vermont Canyon Rd.\, just past the Greek Theater\, where hardy hikers find plenty of street parking. \n\n \nThe Charlie Turner Trailhead marker \n\nThe most popular route up Mt. Hollywood\, the second highest peak in the park\, is suitable for families with children. It begins at the Charlie Turner Trailhead\, named to honor a longtime park volunteer. You can use the restrooms at the Observatory and ask a park ranger about conditions on the trail. Summer can be scorching up there\, so be sure and carry plenty of water. Sandals and flip-flops are not the best footwear in snake country. The trailhead sign and landscaping are at the north end of the Observatory parking lot. The hike begins with a short\, easy ascent along a ridge. \nLook for the Mt. Hollywood trailhead sign and landscaping at the north end of the Observatory parking lot. The hike (where leashed dogs are legal but unleashed ones common) isn’t likely to cross paths with P-22\, the mountain lion that traversed two freeways to take up residence in the wilds of Griffith Park in 2012. Start walking up a short\, easy ascent along a ridge through authentic wild chaparral where you may spot purple and orange wildflowers in the spring and red Toyon berries on California Holly bushes in the fall. In less than a half- mile\, you come upon a cooling grove of pine trees called the Berlin Forest\, planted by real Berliners to honor their sister-city status with Los Angeles. There are tables and benches\, and a beautiful view of the Hollywood Sign framed by pine boughs. Be on the lookout year-round for Zorro-masked Mountain Chickadees in the conifers and orange and yellow flame-headed Western Tanagers in the scrub. \n\nThe entrance to Dante’s View\nAfter another gently up-sloped half-mile\, you reach a four-way crossroads. The left fork goes around the west side of Mt. Hollywood toward a rest stop called Captain’s Roost. The right fork leads around the east side to a well-kept “folk” garden called Dante’s View. The Friends of Griffith Park have recently been planting and nurturing more native plants around the rest stop gardens\, which were severely burned in 2007. Both provide shade (there’s also a water fountain at Dante’s View) and restorative views of the Observatory and the city to the south and the Hollywood Sign to the west. The 1\,625-foot Mt. Hollywood summit is about one-quarter mile beyond both stops and consists of a coastal sage scrubby knob with protective railing. The slightly cockeyed view of the letters in the Hollywood Sign is from a perspective just a few degrees off dead center\, and almost directly at eye level. READ MORE \n\n \n\nMODERATE:\nThe Brush Canyon Trail\, \nalso part of Griffith Park\, features a fun side trip to Adam West’s Bat Cave\, home of the Batmobile in the 60’s Batman TV series. Locals know it as Bronson Caves\, and there’s a small parking lot close to the trailhead on Canyon Drive and an overflow dirt parking lot just down the road. The trail offers sensational views of the city and ends behind the Hollywood Sign. The old rock quarry tunnel has figured in many movies\, from 1925’s Riders of the Purple Sage to 2010’s Megashark vs. Crocosaurus. \n\n \nA view from the Brush Canyon Trail. hike \n\nThe 6.5-mile trail to the Sign climbs more than a thousand feet through several healthy ecosystems\, so hikers need to give it three hours and carry plenty of water. If there aren’t too many unleashed dogs\, you might see mule deer\, bobcats\, coyotes\, and rattlesnakes. Look up for Cooper’s Hawks soaring in the thermals over the Sign and down for honeybees probing the wildflowers. READ MORE \nNOTE: Reservations are NOT currently required on this hike. However\, access might be closed off during the day depending on overcrowding. \n \nDIFFICULT:CLOSED\nThe Cahuenga Peak Hike\,\nacross a short saddle from Mt. Lee\, runs through the latest 138-acre addition to Griffith Park and offers wide angle views of the Hollywood Reservoir and the San Fernando Valley. Suitable for the more experienced hiker\, it begins on the Aileen Getty Ridge Trail and includes the Hugh Hefner Overlook\, both named for two of the many benefactors and community activists who raised the money to save the land from a luxury housing development in 2012. \n \nThe trail is more rugged and less defined than the Canyon Blvd. trail. It includes the famous Wisdom Tree and traverses an area where the park’s resident mountain lion\, P-22\, has been spotted (usually after dark when the park is closed). The trail is open from sunrise to sunset. READ MORE \nHours\nOpen Daily: Sunrise – Sunset \n\n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nhollywoodsign.org/hiking-to-the-sign/\n \n  \nFind more

SUMMARY:Dockweiler Beach Fire Pits
DESCRIPTION:EVERY DAY ’til MIDNIGHT- Dockweiler State Beach\nThe Dockweiler Beach Fire Pits are located about 3 miles south of Playa del Rey\, this inviting beach features 3 miles of shoreline\, an RV park\, and over 2\,000 regular vehicle parking spaces. The wide sandy beach lies beneath the departures flight path of LAX\, offering fantastic belly views of airlines headed out over the Pacific. The lot entrance is at Vista del Mar and Imperial Highway. \n\n\nFIRE PITS RULES\n\n\n\n\n\nAny grills or BBQs must fit inside the fire pit\, which is 2′ wide. No grills\, grilling\, or flames or fires on the sand.\nTo use the fire pits\, you bring your own charcoal or wood and a way to light them.\nPlease do not use sand to put out the fire.\nHelp keep our beaches clean by preventing ashes or debris from falling into the sand.\n\n  \n\n\n\nThere’s no better way to end a fun day at the beach than to circle up around a cozy bonfire. Not all California beaches allow bonfires\, but here in the Marina del Rey area\, we’re lucky that Dockweiler State Beach does permit regulated burns in provided fire rings. Follow these tips to ensure your group has an enjoyable time. \n\nIf you want a pit\, arrive early. From May through September\, the pits are in high demand\, especially on the weekends\, and there are some diehards who arrive at dawn to claim their spots for the entire day. You cannot reserve fire pits as you would a campsite. Do not leave your pit unattended\, even for a quick dip in the ocean – if you do\, don’t be surprised to find another group has taken over the site. There are between 60 – 80 fire pits located just north and south of where Vista del Mar intersects with Imperial Highway. That sounds like a lot\, but consider that Dockweiler is also home to an RV park\, and you’re all competing for space.\nBring everything you need – wood\, s’mores\, snacks\, et cetera (see “Your Packing List” below).\nThe beach and all amenities close at midnight.\nBefore you leave\, snuff out the flame with water. Stir the embers after they are covered with water and make sure that everything is saturated. Do not use sand to distinguish the fire\, as it creates a mess for the next guest.\n\n \nYOUR PACKING LIST\n\nWood and charcoal (wood for that nice bonfire and charcoal for cooking – see below about barbecue rules). Both can be purchased at Ralph’s grocery stores: 4700 Admiralty Way\, Marina del Rey; 8701 Lincoln Boulevard\, Playa del Rey. Only burn clean wood (nothing treated with paint\, chemicals\, etc.) in the pits.\nFire starter and a lighter. You can purchase kindling from most any grocery\, home supply\, or sporting-goods store. Or\, prepare your own starter with this old-school camping craft: Fill a cardboard egg carton with dryer lint\, wood shavings\, paper shreds\, or other ignitable materials. Pour a small amount of melted candle wax into each cup to make things stay put. Break off cups individually and place into your wood stack. Light the cardboard cups and watch how easy your fire takes off – even in the wind.\nIf barbecuing\, note that large stand-up barbeques are NOT allowed on the sand or in the parking lots. However\, you can bring a low-profile version and place it inside the fire ring.\nLong-handle grilling sticks. These are great for cooking hot dogs and kabobs and roasting marshmallows.\nHot glove or mitt. Don’t ruin your night with a burn from handling hot wood\, pots\, or grills. Items like the Ove Glove offer protection while still allowing dexterity.\nFood! Doubt you’ll forget this\, but you may want a separate checklist so that you remember all the elements for your meal. It’s easy to overlook things like serving spoons\, plastic utensils\, salt and pepper\, napkins or wet wipes\, and containers for leftovers. Paper plates are great for cookouts since they’re ok to burn in the fire afterward.\nCamp/beach table. Depending on the size of your group\, you may prefer to set up your dinner fixings buffet style on a simple folding table. Whatever you bring\, remember that you’ll need to carry it across the sand to the pit and back to the parking lot at the end of your evening. So only take what you really need.\nYou’ll want a beverage cooler with ice\, especially if you heed our warning and arrive early in the day to claim your spot. A bag to hold discarded recyclables is a good idea\, too.\nComfort items. Ask each person in your group to bring his or her own beach chair or picnic blanket. Remind them that despite warm daytime temps\, the beach cools down a lot at night; having extra blankets and jackets is a smart move.\n\n  \n  \n  \nClick here to read beach rules and regulations at LA County Beaches including Dockweiler State Beach. \n  \nDOCKWEILER STATE BEACH PARKING INFORMATION\nParking at Dockweiler State Beach costs between $6 (weekday\, low season) and $13 (weekend\, high season) and there are no in/outs. If you leave the lot\, you must pay again to enter. The first 300 cars to arrive during weekdays pay a reduced rate of $3; during weekends and L.A. County holidays\, the reduced rate for the first 300 cars is $5. There is limited street parking on Vista del Mar\, but take note of the parking signage. Click for an interactive parking map with fees and times. \n  \nHours\nMonday – Sunday: 6:00 a.m.- 12:00 Midnight \n\nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nvisitmarinadelrey.com/dockweiler-state-beach\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

SUMMARY:The Abbey West Hollywood
DESCRIPTION:THE WORLD’S GREATEST GAY BAR – West Hollywood\nCome and join your friends at The Abbey\, welcoming you to a weekend of Pride celebrations! Sip on delicious cocktails\, dance the night away to our great music selection\, and enjoy a special Pride menu. Celebrating PRIDE is all about having a great time with friends and family! \n \nAfter nearly three decades in the business — an achievement in any industry but a unicorn-level rarity in the dining and nightlife scene — The Abbey is more than a dance club or restaurant. It’s a community center\, albeit one with sexy\, barely clad dancers\, 10-oz apple martinis\, and magical memories. \nThe weekly calendar includes Brunch Service on Saturdays\, All That ’90s on Tuesdays\, Ash WeHo\, Kink Thursdays\, and Sinful Fridays. The most popular day remains Sunday Funday when locals start showing up for brunch. By mid-afternoon\, there’s a line snaking down the block that’d make you think it’s on Saturday night. \nOn a typical weekday at The Abbey\, you’ll see parents with baby strollers coming from the park next door and guys in tank tops after a workout. That segues into the lunch crowd\, which eventually becomes the happy hour and dinner crowd. Around 9 p.m.\, the dancers — both guys and girls — come out. \nTHE ABBEY PRIDE WEEKEND\n \n\nTHE OWNER\n \nDavid Cooley\, hailing from Ohio and armed with a degree in Hotel Management from the University of Nevada\, Las Vegas\, packed up and moved out to Los Angeles in 1981. Pursuing a new career in finance\, Cooley was a stockbroker for two years before becoming a vice president at Wells Fargo Bank. \nShortly thereafter in 1991\, Cooley set out on his own and invested in a small\, discreet space in West Hollywood that he renovated into a coffeehouse called The Abbey.  After nearly twenty-five years and five expansions\, The Abbey is more than 14\,000 square feet and known as the Best Gay Bar in the World\, having won the award twice from Logo. \n \n  \n\nHours\nMonday – Friday: 11:00am – 2:00am\nSaturday – Sunday: 10:00am – 2:00am \n\n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nwww.theabbeyweho.com/weeklyevents\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

SUMMARY:Train Rides in Torrance
DESCRIPTION:EVERY 1st SUNDAY & 3rd SATURDAY- Wilson Park\, Torrance\nSouthern California Live Steamers provides mini-train rides on public run days every first Sunday of the month from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and every third Saturday of the month from noon to 3 p.m. All SCLS members are City of Torrance volunteers with annual fingerprint clearance and are not paid for their time expended on maintaining the trains and facility\, and providing the rides.Donations are appreciated. \n  \n \nIn 1987\, for the Torrance 75th anniversary event\, the City of Torrance asked SCLS if they could set up a small track on the back end of Wilson Park. At the time this was a vacant lot\, no trees and only weeds for vegetation. Considerable effort was expended by both the City and SCLS to prepare the area and lay the tracks necessary to run the trains. During the City’s 75th Anniversary Celebration in October 1987\, the free train rides were so well received by the public that the City sought to have SCLS run the trains on a regular basis. On May 11\, 1990\, the City and SCLS entered into a 25-year License Agreement allowing SCLS to provide free train rides at Wilson Park on a regular basis. A new home was found! \nANOTHER 25 YEARS \nThe mini-train rides have become a popular feature of Wilson Park. Originally\, free train rides were offered once a month on the first Sunday of each month. Today\, SCLS provides free train rides twice a month on the first Sunday and third Saturday of each month\, and on special occasions. The City and SCLS entered into another 25-year lease agreement thru May 11\, 2040. \nSouthern California Live Steamers\, Inc. operates as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization under IRS rules and is a registered California non-profit corporation. All of the income for the operation of SCLS is derived by donations from its members\, passengers and corporate sponsors\, and thru fundraisers. SCLS does not charge the passengers for rides on public run days\, though donations are accepted from our riders on public run days which is on the 1st Sunday and 3rd Saturday of each month. Funds received are used to pay SCLS expenses such as insurance\, maintenance costs\, facility upgrades\, fuel\, track repairs\, future track projects\, and other expenses. All SCLS members are City of Torrance volunteers and are not paid for their time expended on club projects or operations. \nmers \n  \nHours\n3rd Saturdays: 12:00pm – 3:00pm\n1st Sundays: 11:00am – 3:00pm \n\nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nhttps://www.torranceca.gov/\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

SUMMARY:Watch a Free Polo Match
DESCRIPTION:SATURDAYS AND SUNDAYS- Pacific Palisades\nThe horses are running again at the Will Rodgers Polo Club. Come and enjoy watching matches most Saturdays & Sundays. Check the clubs calendar HERE for other private events. \nThe matches are free to watch\, however parking is paid at the Will Rogers State Park Daily Parking Fee: winter $4 – $9\, summer $4 – $15 \n \n  \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n1501 Will Rogers State Park Rd\, Pacific Palisades\, CA 90272 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Polo Club\nThe Will Rogers Polo Field is the Only Remaining Polo Field in Los Angeles County California. \n\n\n\n\nWill made his home in Beverly Hills during the early twenties. In 1922 Will bought the property above Sunset Boulevard commanding a view of western Los Angeles\, Santa Monica and the Pacific Ocean\, where he built a small weekend cottage. In 1926\, he built a polo field on the land. In 1928 Will\, his wife Betty\, and their three children – Will Jr.\, Mary\, and Jimmy – moved to the ranch\, and the home was enlarged to it’s present size of thirty-one rooms. \n \nToday\, the grounds and the ranch buildings are maintained as they were when the family lived here. His ranch reflects his roots in horsemanship\, starting with the polo field\, which is the first thing you see when you look south from the parking area. The field is the only outdoor polo field in Los Angeles county. Featured in many movies and TV shows\, the polo field features a gentle slope that forms an area for viewing the polo action. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nUp from the parking area are the ranch buildings\, including the visitor center\, which once the ranch guest house. The visitor center features a film on the life of Will Rogers\, literature and an audio tour of the grounds. The ranch buildings and grounds are maintained as they were when the Rogers family lived there in the late 1920s and 1930s. But the park is more than just an historic site\, it’s also a working ranch. The park still retains many of the western equestrian activities that were a part of Will Rogers’ life. Up the hill from the main guest ranch\, above the green expanse of lawn\, are the stables\, which have recently been renovated. \n \nIf you come out and watch our games\, be aware that an enormous amount of “behind the scenes” preparation has made this event possible. Each player has two to four horses; which require feeding\, cleaning and daily exercise during the week preceding each game. Most of the players board their horses elsewhere\, which means that earlier in the day\, they trailered their horses to the park for the game. The horses are then brushed and “tacked up” in their special saddles\, bridle and leg protection wraps. The players dress in their white joudhpers\, team shirts\, boots\, knee guards and riding spurs. Between chukkers (periods of play)\, players and grooms\, frantically change horses and adjust their tack. A thousand details can go wrong (and often do)! But\, at that sublime moment when the mallet touches the ball\, it all seems gloriously worthwhile. \nHours\nSaturday: 2:00pm – 4:00pm\nSunday: 10:00am – 1:00pm \n\n\n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nhttps://willrogerspolo.com/calendar/\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

DESCRIPTION:EVERY 3rd SUNDAY @ VVMC | Abbot Kinney Blvd Venice\nJoin us every third Sunday\, for our monthly VVMC Venice Vintage Motorcycle Club 3rd Sunday Ride. We start gathering about 9am just north of Venice Blvd on Abbot Kinney Blvd. intage is preferred but all makes\, models\, and years are welcome. Bring your sense of adventure and a willingness to let go and just ride! \n1625 Abbot Kinney BoulevardVenice\, CA\, 90291 (map) \n9 am – Meet\n10 am – Kickstands up!\n12 pm – Return\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVintage preferred\, but all years\, makes\, and models are welcome!\nWe would like to stress that this is a safe and fun ride. \nSome guidelines for the ride: \n\n\nWe leave at 10 am sharp! \n\n\nBe gassed up and ready to go. \n\n\nDo not pass our Road Captains.  They are there to lead and keep everyone together. \n\n\nNo lane splitting in large rides. \n\n\nKeep your lines clean & eyes open! \n\n\n\n\n\nThe Story of VVMC\nIt all started in a garage in Venice…\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Venice Vintage Motorcycle Club is dedicated to the preservation and celebration of vintage motorcycles and of motorcycle culture.  We honor the craftsmanship and inherent beauty found in the design of all vintage motorbikes as something potent\, influential and representative of a time lost to history\, where things were built with pride and made to last. \nThe VVMC is a band of brothers and sisters compromised of more than 30 individuals faithful to and united by the love of riding and maintaining old motorcycles. Old bikes brought us together and we ride them like their maker intended.  Sometimes a little faster than that. \nWith our roots in Southern California\, we are committed to supporting our community in Venice and maintaining inclusion towards others upon the alter of the old machine. \n\n\n\nGeneral Questions\n\n\n\n\nQ: What do you consider “Vintage?”\nSome say 20\, some say 30 years old. We consider vintage to be pre ’79. It was around this time that bikes of most major manufacturers started to take on a more modern look. As well\, it was the last year Honda released a bike with a kick-start. That said\, we’re not snobs so don’t worry about it…unless it’s Wednesday. \nQ: Where and when do you ride?\nWe host a 3rd Sunday Ride every month. All makes\, models\, and years are welcome. See details on our Events Page. \nWednesday nights are club night and strictly vintage. Make friends with a member and you may just get an invite. The VVMC hosts various other rides and events throughout the year. Sign up for our mailing list and follow us on Facebook and Instagram to stay updated. \nQ: Do I have to be a member to join the rides?\nNope. Hop on your bike and come ride with us! \nQ: Does my bike have to be vintage to join the ride?\nNope. Vintage is preferred but all makes\, models\, and years are welcome \nQ: Can I join the VVMC?\nThe VVMC is a not a subscription type organization. It’s a small\, tight group of like-minded (and a bit crazy) friends. If you’re serious about joining the clan\, here’s the simple law: \n\nYou MUST own & ride a vintage (pre ’79) bike.\nPlan on riding with us and being active in the group for at least a year. Showing up on occasion doesn’t cut it. The patch must be thoroughly earned.\nWe expect you to volunteer your time at our events. Jump in and help out!\nDon’t be a tool… but maybe bring some with you (actual tools that is).\n\nQ: How can I stay informed about your rides & events?\nMake sure to sign up on our Email List\, check out our Events Page\, and find us on Facebook and Instagram. That should just about cover it. \n\n\nCome out and ride with us. \n\n\n\n\nSee You There!\n-VVMC \n\nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nvenicevintage.com\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

SUMMARY:Mount Wilson Observatory
DESCRIPTION:OPEN WEEKENDS- Mt Wilson\nMount Wilson Observatory is located on the summit of Mount Wilson above Pasadena at an altitude of 5715 feet. Mount Wilson Observatory is visible from much of the Los Angeles area. Free of charge\, this is a must see experience. \n  \n \n\n\nViewing through the 100-Inch Hooker Telescope\nThe world’s largest telescope from 1917 to 1949\, the 100-inch Telescope forever changed our understanding of the scale and nature of our Universe and launched a revolution in astronomy that continues through today. This world-heritage class instrument\, used by many of the greatest astronomers of the Twentieth Century\, has only recently been made available for regular public viewing. It is the largest telescope in the world that you can rent! Imagine looking through the telescope used by astronomers Edwin Hubble and Milton Humason in the late 1920s to measure the expansion of the Universe. \n\n  \n \nThe 60 inch Telescope\nMount Wilson Observatory’s 60-inch telescope was completed in 1908 by Observatory founder George Ellery Hale with funding from Andrew Carnegie. It was the world’s largest operational telescope until Hale went on to complete the Mt. Wilson 100-inch telescope in 1917. For a more detailed history of this revolutionary instrument\, which became the model for all large observatory telescopes of the future\, see the article “Building the 60-inch Telescope.” Among the many important discoveries from the 60-inch telescope was Harlow Shapley’s revelation in 1918 that the accepted view of the time\, that our Sun was near the center of the Milky Way Galaxy\, was wrong. Shapley used the light gathering power of the 60-inch to show that our solar system is instead half way out toward the edge of our Galaxy. The telescope was a workhorse instrument for astronomy for over half a century and used by astronomical luminaries such as Edwin Hubble\, Walter Baade\, and Allan Sandage to unravel the secrets of stars and galaxies. Now retired from active scientific service\, the 60-inch and the 100-inch telescopes are the largest in the world made exclusively available to the public. With their large light-collecting mirrors and the exquisite skies over Mount Wilson\, these historic telescopes provide an unrivaled and unique astronomical experience. \n\n\n\n\n\nCHARA (Center for High Angular Resolution Astronomy)\nMount Wilson’s newest astronomical instruments are Georgia State University’s optical interferometric array of six telescopes. This facility\, located here because of the exceptional seeing conditions\, puts Mount Wilson back on the cutting edge of astrophysics. The full array was completed in 2004. Each telescope of the CHARA Array has a light-collecting mirror 1-meter in diameter. The telescopes are dispersed over the mountain to provide a two-dimensional layout that provides the resolving capability (but not the light collecting ability!) of a single telescope a fifth of a mile in diameter. Light from the individual telescopes is conveyed through vacuum tubes to a central Beam Synthesis Facility in which the six beams are combined together. When the paths of the individual beams are matched to an accuracy of less than one micron\, after the light traverses distances of hundreds of meters\, the Array then acts like a single coherent telescope for the purposes of achieving exceptionally high angular resolution. The Array is capable of resolving details as small as 200 micro-arcseconds\, equivalent to the angular size of a nickel seen from a distance of 10\,000 miles. In terms of the number and size of its individual telescopes\, its ability to operate at visible and near infrared wavelengths\, and its longest baselines of 330 meters\, the CHARA Array is arguably the most powerful instrument of its kind in the world. \nScience Objectives\nThe Array is applicable to problems in almost all areas of contemporary astronomy. It is particularly suited to stellar astrophysics where it will be used to measure the diameters\, distances\, masses\, and luminosities of stars\, as well as to image features such as spots and flares on their surfaces. Other projects range from detecting planetary systems\, imaging stars in process of formation\, and studies of bright transient phenomena like novae. \nFor more information on this amazing research facility and the science that is emerging from it\, please go to the CHARA array homepage. There you can find a video\, Sizing up the Stars\, that explains how interferometry works. \n\n\n\n \nAstronomical Museum\nAlso on the mountain\, next to the 100-inch telescope\, there is a new exhibit hall that displays Albert Michelson’s original interferometer\, used to get the first measurement of stars other than our Sun.  The exhibit hall reveals in detail how the light is combined in the new CHARA area. \nWeekend Public Guided Tours\n\n\n\n\n\nDocent-led walking tours of the observatory take place on Saturdays and Sundays through November 29. The two hour tours depart at 11:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. sharp from the Cosmic Cafe located above the large parking lot at the entrance to the Observatory. A special feature of these tours is entrance into both the 60-inch and 100-inch telescope domes\, as well as the observing room of the 150-foot Solar Tower Telescope.  On rare occasions\, a telescope may be closed to the tour due to a special event or maintenance. \n\n\nPurchasing Tickets \nTickets are $15 (adults) and $13 (ages 12 and under & 62 and older). Tour tickets are available for same-day purchase at the Cosmic Café\, and rarely sell out. For each tour\, 15 spots are available. \nIf you have a large group\, we urge you to opt for a private tour instead. These can be arranged by sending an email request to tours@mtwilson.edu. \nChildren under age 6 are not permitted. The tours involve about a mile of walking and climbing some stairs. Please read the Health Notice in the information tab. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPrivate Group Tours\nPrivate guided tours may be arranged by individuals or groups in advance. A modest per-person fee is charged. More information is available here. Please contact tours@mtwilson.edu for more details and a private tour request form. SUMMARY:FREE DAY AT WALT DISNEY'S BARN
DESCRIPTION:OPEN EVERY THIRD SUNDAY- in Holmby Hills\nIn 1950\, Walt built the The Carolwood Pacific Railroad in the backyard of his house in Holmby Hills\, California. He named the railroad for the street where he lived: Carolwood Drive. The first run on the Carolwood Pacific Railroad took place on May 7\, 1950. The 2\,615 feet of track included a 46 foot long trestle and a 90 foot long tunnel under his wife’s flower bed. Amidst the railroad\, he had a barn built where he could monitor and remotely control the switches on the track. The barn also served as a workshop and a place for Walt and his friends to relax. \n \n  \nWhen the Holmby Hills home was sold\, the new owners had plans to preserve the house\, but discovered that due to structural issues and asbestos\, they demolished the existing structures and built a new home. Fortunately\, Walt’s daughter Diane Disney Miller recognized the importance of the Barn and began the process of saving it before escrow closed. Diane contacted Michael and Sharon Broggie\, founders of the Carolwood Society\, who began planning what to do with the Barn. A general contractor\, Bill Abel\, was hired to dismantle the Barn and it was stored until an agreement was secured with the City of Los Angeles and the Los Angeles Live Steamers Museum. It opened in Griffith Park as a loan to the people of Los Angeles on July 19\, 1999\, and is located inside the 1/8th scale track\, the same scale that Walt had at his home. \n  \n\nWalt Disney’s Barn\nWalt spent many hours in the Barn not only working on his trains\, but thinking about new projects and ideas. One could say that this Barn is the birthplace of Imagineering. \n  \n \nToday\, the Barn is in a beautifully landscaped part of the park\, with several nice picnic tables and many benches. Bring your family and a picnic basket to enjoy your lunch and some Walt Disney\, railroad\, and Disneyland history. The Barn is small\, but full of many interesting items to learn about\, and lots of wonderful stories. \n  \n \nThe Barn is open on the 3rd Sunday of each month from 11 am to 3 pm. Parking is free\, and admission is free. Donations to the Los Angeles Live Steamers Museum are accepted. \n  \nHours\nEvery 3rd Sunday: 11:00am – 3:00pm\n\nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \ncarolwood.com\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n
