DESCRIPTION:HIKING TO THE SIGN\nThe Hollywood Sign is the most famous icon of the city of Los Angeles\, and there are three routes below ranked from easy to difficult. The Mt Hollywood Trail\, The Brush Canyon Trail\, and The Cahuenga Peak Trail (currently closed)\n\nStunning views of the Hollywood Sign unfold at your own pace on hiking trails that meander through the rolling chaparral of the Santa Monica Mountains.  Trails originally blazed by paws\, hooves\, and yucca-thatched moccasins now connect us to cultural as well as natural wonders. The western frontier of Griffith Park offers hikers amazingly close encounters with the Sign\, which is off-limits to human hands\, just below the ridgeline at the 1\,708-foot summit of Mt. Lee. On the longest hike\, you can ascend above and behind the Sign’s 45-foot-tall aluminum letters\, where you look out over a windswept vista encompassing the DOOWYLLOH sign\, the dreamy towers of downtown Los Angeles\, and\, on a clear day\, the ageless blue Pacific.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFrom behind\, the Sign reads DOOWYLLOH\nAuthorized hiking trails are open the same hours as Griffith Park\, from Sunrise to Sunset\, 365 days a year.  While enjoying hiking\, please stay on authorized trails. \nPlease beware of the extreme fire danger on the trails\, parts of which are still recovering after a devastating wildfire in 2007. Trespassing is illegal. A LAPD officer is stationed near the Sign\, which is protected by a fence and security cameras 24 hours a day. Thank you. \n  \nEasy Way:\nThe Mt. Hollywood Trail\, \noffering a mind-bending side-angle view of the Sign\, has two starting points in Griffith Park\, the 6.5 square miles of protected wilderness AKA the heart and lungs of Los Angeles (Hours: Sunrise – Sunset). The shorter loop hike of about three miles starts at Griffith Observatory’s parking lot\, which is free and fills up early on weekends. \nA slightly longer and steeper trail with fewer people starts on a fire road intersecting N. Vermont Canyon Rd.\, just past the Greek Theater\, where hardy hikers find plenty of street parking. \n\n \nThe Charlie Turner Trailhead marker \n\nThe most popular route up Mt. Hollywood\, the second highest peak in the park\, is suitable for families with children. It begins at the Charlie Turner Trailhead\, named to honor a longtime park volunteer. You can use the restrooms at the Observatory and ask a park ranger about conditions on the trail. Summer can be scorching up there\, so be sure and carry plenty of water. Sandals and flip-flops are not the best footwear in snake country. The trailhead sign and landscaping are at the north end of the Observatory parking lot. The hike begins with a short\, easy ascent along a ridge. \nLook for the Mt. Hollywood trailhead sign and landscaping at the north end of the Observatory parking lot. The hike (where leashed dogs are legal but unleashed ones common) isn’t likely to cross paths with P-22\, the mountain lion that traversed two freeways to take up residence in the wilds of Griffith Park in 2012. Start walking up a short\, easy ascent along a ridge through authentic wild chaparral where you may spot purple and orange wildflowers in the spring and red Toyon berries on California Holly bushes in the fall. In less than a half- mile\, you come upon a cooling grove of pine trees called the Berlin Forest\, planted by real Berliners to honor their sister-city status with Los Angeles. There are tables and benches\, and a beautiful view of the Hollywood Sign framed by pine boughs. Be on the lookout year-round for Zorro-masked Mountain Chickadees in the conifers and orange and yellow flame-headed Western Tanagers in the scrub. \n\nThe entrance to Dante’s View\nAfter another gently up-sloped half-mile\, you reach a four-way crossroads. The left fork goes around the west side of Mt. Hollywood toward a rest stop called Captain’s Roost. The right fork leads around the east side to a well-kept “folk” garden called Dante’s View. The Friends of Griffith Park have recently been planting and nurturing more native plants around the rest stop gardens\, which were severely burned in 2007. Both provide shade (there’s also a water fountain at Dante’s View) and restorative views of the Observatory and the city to the south and the Hollywood Sign to the west. The 1\,625-foot Mt. Hollywood summit is about one-quarter mile beyond both stops and consists of a coastal sage scrubby knob with protective railing. The slightly cockeyed view of the letters in the Hollywood Sign is from a perspective just a few degrees off dead center\, and almost directly at eye level. READ MORE \n\n \n\nMODERATE:\nThe Brush Canyon Trail\, \nalso part of Griffith Park\, features a fun side trip to Adam West’s Bat Cave\, home of the Batmobile in the 60’s Batman TV series. Locals know it as Bronson Caves\, and there’s a small parking lot close to the trailhead on Canyon Drive and an overflow dirt parking lot just down the road. The trail offers sensational views of the city and ends behind the Hollywood Sign. The old rock quarry tunnel has figured in many movies\, from 1925’s Riders of the Purple Sage to 2010’s Megashark vs. Crocosaurus. \n\n \nA view from the Brush Canyon Trail. hike \n\nThe 6.5-mile trail to the Sign climbs more than a thousand feet through several healthy ecosystems\, so hikers need to give it three hours and carry plenty of water. If there aren’t too many unleashed dogs\, you might see mule deer\, bobcats\, coyotes\, and rattlesnakes. Look up for Cooper’s Hawks soaring in the thermals over the Sign and down for honeybees probing the wildflowers. READ MORE \nNOTE: Reservations are NOT currently required on this hike. However\, access might be closed off during the day depending on overcrowding. \n \nDIFFICULT:CLOSED\nThe Cahuenga Peak Hike\,\nacross a short saddle from Mt. Lee\, runs through the latest 138-acre addition to Griffith Park and offers wide angle views of the Hollywood Reservoir and the San Fernando Valley. Suitable for the more experienced hiker\, it begins on the Aileen Getty Ridge Trail and includes the Hugh Hefner Overlook\, both named for two of the many benefactors and community activists who raised the money to save the land from a luxury housing development in 2012. \n \nThe trail is more rugged and less defined than the Canyon Blvd. trail. It includes the famous Wisdom Tree and traverses an area where the park’s resident mountain lion\, P-22\, has been spotted (usually after dark when the park is closed). Our Spot is a FREE after-school program for teens ages 12-18\, providing a fun\, safe and supportive place where teens can check-in daily\, Monday through Friday all year long. Programming takes on a strength-based approach engaging youth from our communities to explore their unique and collective lived experiences through various forms of recreation programming\, visual arts sessions\, social action activities\, and educational field trips. Focus is placed on aiding teens in setting meaningful goals to accomplish individually and collaboratively through peer-to-peer leadership\, art\, special gatherings\, and park engagement. \nOur SPOT has been a safe haven for teens after school – providing a place to make friends\, participate in fun activities and learn self-esteem. While Los Angeles County shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020\, so did many of the after school and youth serving organizations in Los Angeles County. However\, Our SPOT stayed connected with teens through virtual programming available live on mobile devices and smartphones. The California African American Museum’s mission is to research\, collect\, preserve\, and interpret for public enrichment the history\, art\, and culture of African Americans with an emphasis on California and the western United States. \n \n  \n  \nCAAM’s permanent collection consists of over 4\,000 objects ranging from the 1800s to the present. It encompasses paintings\, photographs\, film\, sculpture\, historical documents\, and artifacts\, and it spans nineteenth-century landscape paintings to modern artworks to contemporary mixed-media reflections on cultural and political events. \n \n  \nThe Museum’s first acquisitions included a bronze bust of civil rights activist Dr. Mary Mcleod Bethune by artist Richmond Barthé and a sculpture by artist Maren Hassinger\, then at the start of her career. These laid the perfect groundwork for CAAM’s mandate to assemble a comprehensive\, thoughtful\, and wide-reaching collection. \n \n  \nCAAM’s deepest holdings include art made or connected to African Americans in California and the western United States. However\, the Museum also has significant works of contemporary art from the African diaspora (including Haiti\, Brazil\, and Jamaica)\, as well as traditional African art from Western\, Central\, and Sub-Saharan Africa. CAAM aims to represent the diverse contributions of African Americans in the United States\, but also to interpret how the past has affected identity in the present. \n  \n  \nToday\, CAAM oversees\, exhibits\, and conserves a rapidly growing collection. The Block 5 variant is the fifth major interval aimed at improving upon the ability for rapid reusability. \nSpace Exploration Technologies Corp.\, known as SpaceX\, is an American aerospace manufacturer and space transport services company headquartered in Hawthorne\, California. It was founded in 2002 by entrepreneur Elon Musk with the goal of reducing space transportation costs and enabling the colonization of Mars. SpaceX has many pads\, on the East Coast of the US they own SLC-40 at Cape Canaveral and LC-39A at the Kennedy Space Center for their lower inclination launches. They also own SLC-4E at Vandenberg\, California for their high inclination launches. DESCRIPTION:OPEN DAILY- Manhattan Beach Pier\nThe Roundhouse Aquarium is located at the end of the Manhattan Beach Pier. The Roundhouse has undergone a recent revitalization through a $4 million capital project spearheaded by the Harrison Greenberg Foundation. The new Roundhouse Aquarium educates and inspires more than 300\,000 visitors every year. It is managed and operated by the nonprofit oceanic and environmental organization Oceanographic Teaching Stations\, Inc. (OTS)\, whose mission is to connect and engage visitors and students to the oceans through hands-on interactive experiences with marine life and habitats of southern California\, and to inspire them to become good stewards of our environment. \nOTS’ programs at the Roundhouse Aquarium promote the study of the oceans\, tidelands and beaches of Southern California through a wide slate of science-based and standards-aligned education programs with its immersive and engaging exhibits of a diverse array of marine life.  More than 100 marine animals from Southern California’s waters live at the aquarium\, many are native to its local waters in the Santa Monica Bay. Notable wildlife include moon jellies\, sharks\, octopus\, sheepshead\, moray eels\, lobsters\, and more – as well as a touch tank with sea stars\, sea cucumbers\, sea urchins and sea snails. The aquarium prides itself on being family oriented. It’s a great place for kids to take their parents! \n\n\n\n\n\nCome SEA our Marine Exhibits\nGet to know the habitats within Southern California by visiting our diverse marine exhibits. These exhibits are showcased within 4 Aquarium Galleries. \n\n\nMarine Habitat Gallery\n\nRocky Reef Tank \nThe Rocky Reef shows us what reefs in the cold California waters look like. They are similar to coral reefs but are made up of rocks instead of corals. They are just as important of a habitat as coral reefs and often serve as a nursery for many types of juvenile fish. \nKelp Forest Tank \nThe Kelp Forest tank represents a distinct southern California marine habitat. This tank shows us what it looks like to swim at the edge of the kelp forest\, where rocks become scarcer and sand more plentiful. Many of the animals in the tank can live their life deep within the kelp forest or at the very edge. Those animals at the edges can even camouflage in the sand. \n\n\n\n\nEducation Gallery\n\nDeep Kelp Forest Tank\nThese tanks represent a very diverse and abundant habitat\, the kelp forest! The giant kelp that grows 2 feet a day\, provides food and shelter for many different animals. Not only is this habitat important for animals\, but it is also important to humans as well! Seaweeds\, like kelp\, produce about 70% of our oxygen through photosynthesis. So\, take a deep breath and thank kelp! \nTide Pool Tank\nAll the animals that you can find in our touch tank live in a habitat called a tide pool. When the tide is low and the water has receded\, pools of water are left in between rocks which form the tide pools. In Southern California\, we have 2 high tides and 2 low tides every day\, which means the animals’ habitat is always changing. They must have special adaptations that allow them to live in such a dynamic habitat. \nPier Piling Tank\nHave you ever wondered what is under the pier? This tank will give you a good idea! Pier pilings\, while man made\, do create a habitat for lots of animals ranging from mussels\, to crabs\, to fish and rays. The fish can either hide amongst the mussels or lay on the sand under the pier among the rays. \n\n\n\n \n\n\nMarine Science Gallery\n\nJewel Tank\nSee our animals in the spotlight with cool adaptive traits like our spotted rose anemone that has biofluorescence and our baby swell shark eggs that can camouflage as seaweed. The baby swell sharks are really cute when they hatch out too! \nPipefish Tank\nThe Pipefish tank is an example of a mudflat with eelgrass beds that act as a nursery for young fish and young sting rays. See if you can spot a pipefish in the eelgrass. \nArtificial Reef Tank\nThe Artificial Reef tank is an examples of man-made structures left behind that now act as reefs teaming with life from sea anemones on rock scallops to sea stars to juvenile rockfish. Can you see the bright orange Garibaldi with blue spots? \nOctopus Tank\nThe octopus tank is an example of a deep water habitat brought to life for our guests to see. It features anemones and rock scallops on the reef which also add structure and microhabitats to the reef. The decorator crab uses the colonial strawberry anemones to help decorate its body to camouflage with the reef. There are small but colorful rockfish like the half-banded rockfish that stay close to the rocks and use them as shelter. \nKid’s Kelp Corner\nHave you ever wondered oh why\, oh why did my goldfish die? Come find the answer in the Kid’s Kelp Corner. You can also relax and read the many ocean related books in our library while watching our inquisitive freshwater fish. \nDiscovery Center\nCome check out what it means to be a scientist! Observe plankton\, learn about the food chain\, and discover some of the aquarium’s smallest residents. \nSeahorse Tank\nSeahorses are some of the most fragile sea creatures in the ocean\, and they can camouflage to look like seaweed\, eelgrass\, or even sea fans. They use their tails to hold onto eelgrass and stay upright\, but they won’t swim except in short bursts. Chace Park \nwas first opened in 1972 at 13650 Mindanao Way in Marina del Rey\, California and was named in honor of the Father of the Marina and long-time Los Angeles County Supervisor\, Burton W. Chace.  The Park hours are from 6:00 am to 10:00 pm 7 days a week while the Office hours are from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm 7 days a week. Burton W. Chace Park offers multi-purpose rooms\, picnic tables\, barbecues\, pergolas\, picnic shelters\, outdoor programs\, great harbor viewing areas\, guest docks\, and is host to numerous year-round events. Admission is free. The Marina del Rey water bus offers rides around the Marina for $1.00. There are always a number of Events going on in the Park throughout the year\, including the Discover Marina del Rey Day where you can meet the Chace Family the first Sunday of each October. \n \nThe Park has a Community Room for which reservations may be made for your community event and great outdoor facilities. This web site was established by the Chace Family as a resource on the history of the Park\, Burton W. Chace’s many accomplishments and contributions to the County of Los Angeles\, and a place where you may enjoy photos of the lovely Park and find detailed news on Events and the future of this wonderful Park. \nBurton W. Chace Park: 10 acres of lush lawn and trees extend into the Marina’s main channel offering magnificent boat and ocean vistas. Built-in barbecue grills and tables invite picnicing. The free outdoor summer concerts run from July through September each year on Thursday and Saturday nights. \nIf you are into cycling\, the Park is located on the South Bay Bicycle Trail which spans from Will Rogers State Beach to the north in Pacific Palisades to Torrance County Beach in the South at the base of the Palos Verdes Peninsula and the Park is located about halfway between the two points making it an ideal stop along the way. \nBurton W. Chace Park has been the site of many weddings\, scenes on television shows including the OC\, and is home to a wealth of community events throughout the year. The Park office displays historical photographs of Santa Monica\, Playa del Rey\, and the canals of Venice in 1905\, when they were new. After many conversations on the process of making beer and the brewing techniques of smaller breweries\, we decided to take a chance at brewing our own malted\, adult beverages!We signed up for a Maltose Falcons class\, bought a brewing kit and a turkey fryer and made a batch of beer on June 23\, 2012. After this first batch\, we were hooked! We invested more time in learning about the process\, fabricated custom brewing equipment and experimented with new recipes while tweaking them to make them our own.After serving samples of our homemade brews and getting positive feedback\, we began talking of doing it legit and opening up a brewery!  Given our Valley roots and the fact our beer was brewed out of a garage in Sylmar\, CA\, we decided 818 Brewing was the perfect name and we filed our paperwork in October 2014 for our new venture. \nWhat we’ve enjoyed the most along our journey is the sense of community within the craft brew scene.
