The land art movement first appeared in the late 1960s and served to challenge the location\, material\, size\, and temporal existence of a work of art. Double Negative consists of two long straight trenches\, 30 feet wide and 50 feet deep\, cut into the “tabletop” of Mormon Mesa\, displacing 240\,000 tons of desert sandstone. The cuts face each other across an indentation in the plateaus’ scalloped perimeter\, forming a continuous image\, a thick linear volume that bridges and combines the “negative” space between them. \nmore info at: Double Negative \n\nAdmission to Double Negative by artist Michael Heizer is always free.\n\nHours\nMonday: 11:00 a.m.-6:00p.m.\nTuesday: Closed\nWednesday: 11:00 a.m.-6:00p.m.\nThursday: 11:00 a.m.-8:00p.m.\nFriday: 11:00 a.m.-6:00p.m.\nSaturday – Sunday: 11:00 a.m.-5:00p.m. \n  \nGeneral Admission: Free\nSpecial exhibitions: $18\nMembers: Free\nChildren under 12: Free\nSeniors and students: $10 \nSpecial exhibitions are free every Thursday\, 5-8pm.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nwww.moca.org\n \n  \n\n\nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:Santa Monica History Museum
DESCRIPTION:OPEN THURSDAY – SUNDAY- Santa Monica\nThe Santa Monica History Museum was founded under the “Historical Activities Committee” of Santa Monica’s Centennial Celebration in 1975 and by a public poll\, with their goal to collect\, preserve\, and be the caretaker of history. Its name at that time was the Santa Monica Historical Society and it was designated as the official collector and preserver of the history\, art\, and culture of the Santa Monica Bay Area. Former Mayor Clo Hoover\, the first woman mayor of Santa Monica\, was elected the first president. \n\nThe museum\, one of the largest in the country for a city the size of Santa Monica\, has grown far beyond expectations with an expansive collection of artifacts\, photographs\, and memorabilia. Thousands of hours have been dedicated to public education and museum services. \n \nWith the help of Louise and Bob Gabriel who had been active in the community for years and had a strong love for Santa Monica and its history took on the responsibility to make the museum a reality.  Within three years\, with determination\, perseverance\, and countless hours of work\, Bob headed the fundraising committee and raised the necessary funds. Louise was able to get all the furnishings for the museum donated by companies that were going out of business. Bob found a temporary rent‐free location on Colorado Avenue. \n\n\nOur Mission\nThe Santa Monica History Museum’s mission is to collect\, preserve and share the history and culture of Santa Monica for generations to come. \n\n\n\n\nOur Vision\nThe Santa Monica History Museum is the steward of the rich history of the Santa Monica Bay area. We are committed to enriching our community by providing public access to our extensive collection with interpretive exhibitions\, public programs\, community partnerships\, and through archival and research services. \n\n\n\nCURRENT EXHIBITION FROM APRIL 1 – DECEMBER 23\, 2022\nBroadway to Freeway:\nLife and Times of a Vibrant Community\n \nIn the mid-20th century\, the Broadway neighborhood was a thriving\, tight-knit community in Santa Monica. Built by African American\, Mexican American\, and immigrant communities\, the Broadway neighborhood was a haven for those who were excluded from other parts of the city by racist and anti-immigrant policies and practices. \nThis exhibition tells the story of how residents built Broadway into a flourishing community of color – and how the Interstate 10 freeway destroyed it in the 1960s. The vibrant lives of pioneering individuals – like the first African American teacher and social worker hired in Santa Monica – are knitted into the neighborhood they built together. The community populated Broadway with welcoming schools\, homes\, and businesses – from beauty parlors and jazz clubs\, to the malt shop\, tortilleria\, and Jewish deli. \n \nFeaturing period photographs\, advertisements\, oral histories\, and songs\, the exhibition draws on the wealth of archival material collected by the Quinn Research Center\, which is dedicated to preserving the history of African American life in Santa Monica. \nToday\, little evidence remains of the community on the blocks between 13th Street and 20th Street\, once the heart of the Broadway neighborhood. Though physically erased\, Broadway lives on in the stories that are preserved and shared to illuminate past inequities and spotlight the inspirational individuals who created a center of social and civic life on their own terms. \n\nAdmissions\n\nGeneral – $5.00\nSeniors & Students – $5.00\nChildren under 12 – Free\nMuseum members – Free\nVeterans & Active-duty military – Free \n\nHours\nMonday – Wednesday: Closed\nThursday: 3:00pm – 8:00pm\nFriday – Sunday: 11:00am – 5:00pm \nMuseum Holiday Hours\nWe are closed in observance of the following holidays: New Year’s Day\, President’s Day\, Easter\, Memorial Day\, July 4th\, Labor Day\, Thanksgiving\, and the day after\, Christmas \n\nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nsantamonicahistory.org\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

SUMMARY:The Broad Museum
DESCRIPTION:FREE TUE – SUN- Bunker Hill\, DTLA\nThe Broad makes its collection of contemporary art from the 1950s to the present accessible to the widest possible audience by presenting exhibitions and operating a lending program to art museums and galleries worldwide. \nBy actively building a dynamic collection that features in-depth representations of influential contemporary artists and by advancing education and engagement through exhibitions and diverse public programming\, the museum enriches\, provokes\, inspires\, and fosters appreciation of art of our time. \n \nThe Broad was founded by philanthropists Eli and Edythe Broad on Grand Avenue in downtown Los Angeles. Designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro in collaboration with Gensler\, the museum offers free general admission and presents an active program of rotating temporary exhibitions and innovative audience engagement. The Broad is home to 2\,000 works of art in the Broad collection\, which is one of the world’s leading collections of postwar and contemporary art. \n  \n \nThe Broad from Home\nThe Broad is committed to inspiring and fostering an appreciation of contemporary art through our digital initiatives. Experience #TheBroadFromHome to find inspiration through music\, poetry\, performance\, workshops\, and conversations centered around the Broad collection. \nOverview \nPerformances \nTalks & Conversations \nArtist Spotlight \nFamily Art Workshops \nMore Online Programs \n  \nThe Broad Collection\nEli and Edythe Broad have been building their collection of postwar and contemporary art over the last 50 years. With a belief that the greatest art collections are built when the art is being made\, the Broads took to collecting art of their own time. \nThe Broad is home to 2\,000 works in the Broad collection by more than 200 artists\, and is one of the world’s leading collections of postwar and contemporary art. The collection features in-depth holdings of influential contemporary artists such as Jean-Michel Basquiat\, Mark Bradford\, Jasper Johns\, Jeff Koons\, Barbara Kruger\, Yayoi Kusama\, Kerry James Marshall\, Julie Mehretu\, Takashi Murakami\, Robert Rauschenberg\, Ed Ruscha\, Cindy Sherman\, Cy Twombly\, Andy Warhol\, and more\, plus an ever-growing representation of younger artists. \n  \nView Our Collection Here\n \nIn Under the Table\, 1994\, the viewer is both in the world of imaginary giants and in the world of remembered childhood. Fusing Alice in Wonderland with the Duchampian tradition of the readymade\, Artist Robert Therrien constructs a doppelganger from an everyday object\, both displaying his visual wit and actualizing literary or imaginative fantasy in three-dimensional space. The table exudes an extraordinary aura\, compelling one to walk underneath the table and conjuring the physical memory of being under the table of one’s childhood home. Complicated and powerful\, the work offers fresh ideas of what a table\, sculpture\, and memory can mean. \n  \n  \n \nUsing the recognizable form of a balloon twisted into the shape of a dog\, Koons has frozen a moment in time\, exaggerating both scale and material. \nBalloon Dog (Blue) is literal and abstract. When standing close to it\, one’s own distorted reflection bends around smooth pert curves. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\nGeneral Admission is Free\nThe Broad requires all visitors must reserve timed tickets in advance. Some exhibitions and events carry a separate charge. \n\n\n\n\n\nHours\nMonday: Closed\nTuesday – Wednesday: 11:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.\nThursday – Friday: 11:00 a.m.-8:00 p.m.\nSaturday: 10:00 a.m.-8:00p.m.\nSunday: 10:00 a.m.-6:00p.m. \n\n\n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nwww.thebroad.org\n \n  \nFind more

\n  \n\n\n\n\n\nGeneral Admission is Free\nAll visitors must reserve timed tickets in advance. Some exhibitions and events carry a separate charge. \n\n\n\n\n\nHours\nMonday: Closed\nTuesday – Wednesday: 11:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.\nThursday – Friday: 11:00 a.m.-8:00 p.m.\nSaturday: 10:00 a.m.-8:00p.m.\nSunday: 10:00 a.m.-6:00p.m. \n\n\n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nhttps://www.thebroad.org/visit/mirror-rooms\n \n  \nFind more

SUMMARY:Suihoen - The Japanese Garden
DESCRIPTION:NOW OPEN- Van Nuys\n \n6100 Woodley Ave\, Lake Balboa\, CA 91406 \n  \nNestled amidst the bustling San Fernando Valley lies an oasis of serenity – the Japanese Garden at Van Nuys\, also known as Suihōen (水芳園)\, meaning “garden of water and fragrance.” This captivating 6.5-acre sanctuary transports you to a world of tranquility\, offering a glimpse into traditional Japanese garden design and a chance to reconnect with nature’s calming embrace. \n \nA Journey Through Three Distinct Styles\nThe Japanese Garden at Van Nuys is a masterpiece of design\, incorporating three distinct styles of Japanese gardens. As you embark on your exploration\, prepare to be enveloped by: \n\n\nTsukiyama (mountain borrowing) style: This style cleverly borrows the scenery of the surrounding hills\, creating the illusion of a much larger space. Let your imagination wander as the boundaries between the garden and the natural landscape seem to blur. \n\n\nChisen (pond garden) style: A central pond\, symbolizing the vastness of the ocean\, takes center stage in this style. Graceful bridges connect small islands within the pond\, adding a touch of whimsy and tranquility to the scene. Keep an eye out for the vibrant koi fish that call this pond their home. \n\n\nKare-sansui (dry landscape) style: Embrace the beauty of minimalism with the Kare-sansui style. Rocks\, sand\, and gravel are meticulously arranged to represent water and mountains\, creating a space for contemplation and reflection. \n\n\n  \n \n  \n \n  \nA Haven for Relaxation and Reflection\nThe Japanese Garden at Van Nuys is more than just a visual treat. It’s a place to unwind\, de-stress\, and reconnect with your inner peace. \n\n\nStroll the Winding Paths: Meandering paths\, crafted from natural materials\, weave through the landscape\, inviting you on a journey of discovery. Allow yourself to be present in the moment\, savoring the sights\, sounds\, and scents of the garden. \n\n\nFind Serenity by the Koi Pond: The gentle murmur of water and the graceful dance of the koi fish create a calming atmosphere. Take a seat on a nearby bench and let the tranquility wash over you. \n\n\nUnwind Amidst the Dry Landscape: The stark beauty of the Kare-sansui style fosters a sense of peace and mindfulness. Allow the raked sand and meticulously placed rocks to inspire contemplation and a connection with nature’s simplicity. \n\n\n  \n \n  \nA Cultural Gem in the City\nThe Japanese Garden at Van Nuys isn’t just a beautiful space; it’s a cultural gem. As you explore\, you’ll encounter traditional Japanese elements like: \n\n\nTorii gate: A traditional gate that marks the entrance to the garden\, signifying a transition from the everyday world to a sacred space. \n\n\nPagoda: A multi-tiered tower\, a familiar feature in Japanese gardens\, adds an architectural touch and a sense of history. \n\n\nTea house: While not always open to the public\, the presence of a tea house hints at the cultural significance of tea ceremonies in Japanese tradition. \n\n\n \n  \n \n  \nPlan Your Tranquil Escape\nThe Japanese Garden at Van Nuys is open to the public free of charge (donations are appreciated). The garden is open Tuesday through Sunday\, from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm\, offering a convenient escape during the workweek or a peaceful weekend retreat. \nEmbrace the Tranquility\nThe Japanese Garden at Van Nuys awaits you. Immerse yourself in the calming beauty of this haven\, explore the intricacies of Japanese garden design\, and discover a place for relaxation\, reflection\, and a touch of cultural exploration. So\, take a break from the hustle and bustle of daily life and find your moment of peace amidst the serenity of the Japanese Garden. \n  \n\nHours and Admission\n\n\n\nHours\nMonday – Thursday: \n\nMorning Reservation Window (9:30am – 12:00pm)\nAfternoon Reservation Window (1:00pm – 3:30pm)\nBetween 12:00pm – 1:00pm\, we are CLOSED\n\nWe are closed Friday through Sunday; closed on all Federal & City of Los Angeles Holidays; and closed within 24 hours of rain. \n——————————————————————————————————————————————————\nAdmission\nAdmission is currently Free! \nRight now\, our reservation system will be under maintenance\, so guests will NOT NEED A RESERVATION TO VISIT THE GARDEN.  During this time\, guests may arrive as “walk-ins.”  Please note the reservations system will eventually return! \nAdmission is free and guests are allowed a 2.5 hour window to visit the Japanese Garden.  Adherence to Terms and Conditions (listed below) are required. \n  \nTERMS AND CONDITIONS: \nSpace in the Garden is limited\, so visitors are permitted to visit either during the “Morning” or “Afternoon” window – they CANNOT visit for both in the same day\, as this would take away openings from other potential guest bookings. \nGroups of 10 or more people must call in the day of desired visitation to check if there is capacity available for their group. \nWhen guests arrive\, they must check in at the Security gate before entering the parking lot\, and then sign in at the Admission Office before entering the garden. \nThe 2.5 hour time window is strictly enforced and guests who arrive 15 minutes before the closing of that time window will not be allowed to enter.  Each group must exit the garden before their time window expires. \nAll members of the booking party must follow the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health COVID-19\nguidelines including\, but not limited to: \n\nPrior to attending your reservation you and all members of your party will conduct a self-symptom check\nfor cough\, shortness of breath\, and/or fever prior to entering the facility. SUMMARY:The Old LA Zoo
DESCRIPTION:OPEN EVERYDAY- Griffith Park\nThe Old LA Zoo\, or The Griffith Park Zoo\, opened in 1912 and closed in 1966 with the opening of the new\, Los Angeles Zoo. The abandoned site of the Griffith Park Zoo\, complete with the ruins of animal enclosures\, is now a picnic area and hiking trail in Griffith Park. \n  \n \nThe Old LA Zoo opened in 1912 with a grand total of only 15 animals. Bears\, Lions\, Monkeys\, Macaw’s\, Elephants\, Reptiles\, Goats\, and Turtles now lived in the zoo\, which was built on the original site of Griffith J. Griffith‘s defunct ostrich farm. \n  \n \nAs Los Angeles grew\, the small Griffith Park Zoo was increasingly criticized as an “inadequate\, ugly\, poorly designed despite drawing more than 2 million visitors a year. \nIn 1958\, the city decided to create a brand new zoo\, and the Griffith Park Zoo closed in August 1966. Its animals were transferred to the new Los Angeles Zoo 2 miles away\, which opened a few months later. \n  \n \nThe animal enclosures\, with the bars removed\, were left as ruins and remain today. A large picnic area was added\, and NOW every summer\, the zoo is the location for the Independent Shakespeare Company’s  Free “Shakespeare in the Park” performances. \nThe Old Zoo is located on Griffith Park Dr. Only 2 miles from today’s LA Zoo\,   \n  \n \nUpon arriving\, you will see a small parking lot. Follow the path Up the hill to reach the abandoned enclosure. \nUpon arriving\, you will enter many of the original Grotto’s. There are lots of little spaces to crawl into\, AND stairs to climb up. \n  \n \nFollow the path around to get to the upper lever where you will find even more cages & enclosures. \n \nIf you are going to come for a visit\, make sure to bring a bottle of water and your imagination. \n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nfriendsofgriffithpark.org\n \n  \nFind more
