All are welcome from beginner too advanced.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMeet us on the beach in front of Perry’s Café and Beach Rental.We will have a large blue tent with a “Surf for Keenan” sign. All are welcome whether if it’s your first time surfing\, part of your daily routine\, or don’t surf at all. We will teach you the basics of surf if it’s your first time. If you don’t surf\, we’ll have coffee\, so come hang out on the beach with new friends. \nBring water\, a snack\, surfboard\, and a wetsuit or swimsuit depending on the weather. \n  \n \nIf you don’t have a board or wetsuit\, please contact Dive N’ Surf at 310-372-8423 to rent equipment. When his children were young\, Walt\, a Los Feliz denizen\, took them to the merry-go-round on weekends. During one visit\, while sitting on a bench watching his kids circle round and round\, he was inspired to create a large scale gathering site that the whole family could enjoy. DESCRIPTION:OPEN DAILY- Manhattan Beach Pier\nThe Roundhouse Aquarium is located at the end of the Manhattan Beach Pier. The Roundhouse has undergone a recent revitalization through a $4 million capital project spearheaded by the Harrison Greenberg Foundation. The new Roundhouse Aquarium educates and inspires more than 300\,000 visitors every year. It is managed and operated by the nonprofit oceanic and environmental organization Oceanographic Teaching Stations\, Inc. (OTS)\, whose mission is to connect and engage visitors and students to the oceans through hands-on interactive experiences with marine life and habitats of southern California\, and to inspire them to become good stewards of our environment. \nOTS’ programs at the Roundhouse Aquarium promote the study of the oceans\, tidelands and beaches of Southern California through a wide slate of science-based and standards-aligned education programs with its immersive and engaging exhibits of a diverse array of marine life.  More than 100 marine animals from Southern California’s waters live at the aquarium\, many are native to its local waters in the Santa Monica Bay. Notable wildlife include moon jellies\, sharks\, octopus\, sheepshead\, moray eels\, lobsters\, and more – as well as a touch tank with sea stars\, sea cucumbers\, sea urchins and sea snails. The aquarium prides itself on being family oriented. It’s a great place for kids to take their parents! \n\n\n\n\n\nCome SEA our Marine Exhibits\nGet to know the habitats within Southern California by visiting our diverse marine exhibits. These exhibits are showcased within 4 Aquarium Galleries. \n\n\nMarine Habitat Gallery\n\nRocky Reef Tank \nThe Rocky Reef shows us what reefs in the cold California waters look like. They are similar to coral reefs but are made up of rocks instead of corals. They are just as important of a habitat as coral reefs and often serve as a nursery for many types of juvenile fish. \nKelp Forest Tank \nThe Kelp Forest tank represents a distinct southern California marine habitat. This tank shows us what it looks like to swim at the edge of the kelp forest\, where rocks become scarcer and sand more plentiful. Many of the animals in the tank can live their life deep within the kelp forest or at the very edge. Those animals at the edges can even camouflage in the sand. \n\n\n\n\nEducation Gallery\n\nDeep Kelp Forest Tank\nThese tanks represent a very diverse and abundant habitat\, the kelp forest! The giant kelp that grows 2 feet a day\, provides food and shelter for many different animals. Not only is this habitat important for animals\, but it is also important to humans as well! Seaweeds\, like kelp\, produce about 70% of our oxygen through photosynthesis. So\, take a deep breath and thank kelp! \nTide Pool Tank\nAll the animals that you can find in our touch tank live in a habitat called a tide pool. When the tide is low and the water has receded\, pools of water are left in between rocks which form the tide pools. In Southern California\, we have 2 high tides and 2 low tides every day\, which means the animals’ habitat is always changing. They must have special adaptations that allow them to live in such a dynamic habitat. \nPier Piling Tank\nHave you ever wondered what is under the pier? This tank will give you a good idea! Pier pilings\, while man made\, do create a habitat for lots of animals ranging from mussels\, to crabs\, to fish and rays. The fish can either hide amongst the mussels or lay on the sand under the pier among the rays. \n\n\n\n \n\n\nMarine Science Gallery\n\nJewel Tank\nSee our animals in the spotlight with cool adaptive traits like our spotted rose anemone that has biofluorescence and our baby swell shark eggs that can camouflage as seaweed. The baby swell sharks are really cute when they hatch out too! \nPipefish Tank\nThe Pipefish tank is an example of a mudflat with eelgrass beds that act as a nursery for young fish and young sting rays. See if you can spot a pipefish in the eelgrass. \nArtificial Reef Tank\nThe Artificial Reef tank is an examples of man-made structures left behind that now act as reefs teaming with life from sea anemones on rock scallops to sea stars to juvenile rockfish. Can you see the bright orange Garibaldi with blue spots? \nOctopus Tank\nThe octopus tank is an example of a deep water habitat brought to life for our guests to see. It features anemones and rock scallops on the reef which also add structure and microhabitats to the reef. The decorator crab uses the colonial strawberry anemones to help decorate its body to camouflage with the reef. There are small but colorful rockfish like the half-banded rockfish that stay close to the rocks and use them as shelter. \nKid’s Kelp Corner\nHave you ever wondered oh why\, oh why did my goldfish die? Come find the answer in the Kid’s Kelp Corner. You can also relax and read the many ocean related books in our library while watching our inquisitive freshwater fish. \nDiscovery Center\nCome check out what it means to be a scientist! Observe plankton\, learn about the food chain\, and discover some of the aquarium’s smallest residents. \nSeahorse Tank\nSeahorses are some of the most fragile sea creatures in the ocean\, and they can camouflage to look like seaweed\, eelgrass\, or even sea fans. They use their tails to hold onto eelgrass and stay upright\, but they won’t swim except in short bursts. The location is The Clubhouse Theater which is a small location literally right beside Jon’s Grocery store entrance on Vermont Ave. You’ll see some comedy posters on the windows out front. \n \nAugust 12th’s show will feature improv teams The Funnies\, Dearly Beloved\, and a superstar team of greats including Peter Banifaz\, Will Hines\, and Jim Woods. \nThere is free parking all over the shopping center lot including in front of the theater. You’ll probably see lots of people standing right outside the doors of the theater. \n\n \n1607 North Vermont Avenue\, Los Angeles\, CA 90027 \n \nThe Clubhouse is your home base for indie improv shows and classes\, sketch\, and a place for the comm. It is an independently owned and operated comedy theatre in the Los Feliz area of Los Angeles. There are classes and shows 7 days a week\, 365 days a year. \nEvery show at the Clubhouse is run by the people who perform there and is offered free of charge. The entire theatre is paid for by the donations that are taken at each show. If you do not have cash on hand\, most teams offer their Venmo or Paypal info. The Clubhouse is also the only theatre in town that offers ample free parking on site for everyone both onstage and in the audience. And no treatment of the museum would be complete without mention of Noah’s Ark in which we find the complete Museum of Natural History the world has ever seen. \nThe Museum of Jurassic Technology traces its origins to this period when many of the essential collections of today were beginning to take form. Welcome to the Los Angeles Maritime Museum where our hardworking harbor tug ANGELS GATE provides educational tours while our historic museum building houses fascinating exhibits\, a research library\, a ham radio station\, and a gift shop. \nOPEN EVERY WEDNESDAY TO SUNDAY FROM 12:00 pm TO 5:00 pm\nFREE TO CHILDREN AGES 12 AND UNDER\n\n\n\nBerth 84\, Foot of 6th St.\, San Pedro\, CA 90731 \nThe Los Angeles Maritime Museum is housed in the former Municipal Ferry Terminal building\, located on the main channel of the Los Angeles Harbor. It was designed in the Streamline Moderne style by architect Derwood Lydell Irvin of the Los Angeles Harbor Department. It was built in 1941 at Berth 84\, by the Works Project Administration (WPA). \nThe ferry between San Pedro and Terminal Island ceased after the Vincent Thomas Bridge was opened to traffic in 1963. The building was then used for offices of the LA Harbor Department. The San Pedro Municipal Ferry Building is now a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. \nThe Los Angeles Maritime Museum opened in 1979 as a result of widespread community efforts to save the historic building. It is the largest maritime museum on the West Coast. The museum’s interior renovation was designed by Modernist architect James Pulliam. The museum is operated by the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks. \n\nEXHIBITS\nANGELS GATE TUGBOAT\n \nThe tugboat ANGELS GATE arrived at the Museum in 1992\, after almost 50 years of providing general towing services and goodwill tours for the Port of Los Angeles. \nTĀMINARU\n \nIn the early 20th century\, Terminal Island (in the Port of Los Angeles) was home to approximately 3\,000 Japanese-Americans who earned their livelihood from catching and cleaning fish. Residents of this community\, known as “Terminal Islanders” were originally from the Wakayama Prefecture\, Japan\, and retained their language and customs after emigrating to Los Angeles harbor. \nTāminaru is a look back at this lost community. The exhibit is guest curated by author Naomi Hirahara\, organized by Tara Fansler\, and sponsored by the Friends of the Los Angeles Maritime Museum and the Japan Business Association with the assistance of the Terminal Islanders Club. \nPOSEIDON MODEL\n \nThere is a movie star on the second floor! The model of the SS POSEIDON was the original prop in the 1972 classic film “The Poseidon Adventure”. \nFifteen men built the model over a period of three months. POSEIDON is 21 .5 feet long and weighs one ton. The builders relied on the plans of the RMS QUEEN MARY\, now permanently docked as an attraction in Long Beach\, California. \nNAVY HALL\n \nThe Museum building\, built-in 1941\, was originally used as a ferry terminal\, transporting people and automobiles between San Pedro and Terminal Island. The area of the first floor where cars would enter and exit is now used as the Navy Hall. \nANGELS GATE LIGHT\n \nThe Angels Gate Lighthouse (officially known as Los Angeles Harbor Light) has marked the entrance of Los Angeles Harbor through times of war and peace\, and even survived a tidal wave! The tower itself has undergone many changes through the years. The distinctive green flash of the Angels Gate Lighthouse remains a welcoming beacon to professional mariners and recreational boaters alike. \nKIDS EXHIBIT\n \nKids of all ages will discover what’s going on in the harbor today through a series of interactive games and activities in the children’s exhibit. Grab a pair of binoculars and take a close-up look at the nation’s busiest container port! Learn how cranes work\, imagine yourself in a variety of harbor professions\, build your own wharves\, test your knowledge of ships and cargo\, or just settle down and enjoy a nautical story!\nDue to Covid-19-related precautions\, the toys and costumes have been temporarily removed. \nCAUGHT\, CANNED\, AND EATEN\n \nThe Port of Los Angeles (San Pedro) was the fishing capital of the nation for much of the twentieth century. Generations of fishermen sold catches of tuna\, sardines\, mackerel\, and squid to fish markets or canneries on nearby Terminal Island. \nToday\, the fishing fleet is greatly diminished and the canneries have closed\, but the legacy of the fishing and canning industries endures. \nCOMMERCIAL DIVING\n \n  \nThis exhibit is an introduction to just a few of the thousands of jobs performed by commercial divers and fishery divers in the South Bay\, and was the inspiration of the late Torrance R. Parker\, noted commercial diver and author of 20\,000 Jobs Under the Sea. \nSCHOOL TOURS\nThe museum is pleased to offer educational tours throughout the year at no charge. \nThe museum is located on the Main Channel of Los Angeles Harbor. Students will have a front-row opportunity to see the massive container ships in action and learn about international trade\, ship terminology\, sailor’s art\, and the history of the working people who built Los Angeles harbor into the nation’s busiest container port. \nTours are free for grades K-12\, Wednesday –Friday mornings\, and reservations are REQUIRED. The museum’s 12\,700 square-foot renovated industrial building—designed by wHY Architecture under the leadership of Kulapat Yantrasast—features ample space for exhibitions\, public programs\, retail pop-ups\, integrated offices\, and special projects. \nICA LA’s mission is to support art that sparks the pleasure of discovery and challenges the way we see and experience the world\, ourselves\, and each other.
