Mindfulness Meditation is the moment-by-moment process of actively and openly observing one’s physical\, mental\, and emotional experiences. Mindfulness has scientific support as a means to reduce stress\, improve attention\, boost the immune system\, reduce emotional reactivity\, and promote a general sense of health and well-being. These half hour weekly sessions are open to all who are interested in learning how to live more presently in life. The Indonesian and Philippine textiles reinforce the Fowler Museum’s standing as a major repository for the textile arts. Also included are significant collections of sculptural material from Sumatra\, Borneo\, Sulawesi\, and Luzon\, puppetry from Java and Bali\, basketry from Indonesia and the Philippines\, and metalwork from the Philippines. The primary strength of the Pacific collections lies in materials from Papua New Guinea\, especially the Papuan Gulf\, Trobriand Islands\, Sepik River\, and Maprik region. Australia and Polynesia are also represented by sizeable collections\, including 45 rare Maori cloaks. \nThe collections from mainland Asia are smaller but growing rapidly\, due to current collecting priorities. A collection of betel-chewing paraphernalia\, representing several countries in South and Southeast Asia\, is considered one of the finest in the world. Other holdings include textiles from Bhutan\, Pakistan\, India\, and Japan\, baskets and decorative arts from Japan\, puppetry from China\, Thailand\, India\, and Turkey\, and art and artifacts from Nepal. \n\n\n\nARCHAEOLOGICAL COLLECTIONS\n\n\n \nThe Fowler Museum at UCLA also serves as a repository for archaeological collections acquired during research conducted by UCLA faculty\, staff\, students\, and other professional archaeologists. Documentation of the collections includes artifact catalogs\, excavation notes\, maps\, and photographs. These collections serve primarily as an archive for teaching and research. DESCRIPTION:OPEN DAILY – Laguna Beach\nWELCOME TO THE PACIFIC MARINE MAMMAL CENTER! The Pacific Marine Mammal Center rescues\, rehabilitates\, and releases marine mammals\, and in doing so we contribute to ocean science and conservation. See some of our current rescued patients recovering! We are run primarily by volunteers who will greet you in our visitor yard and introduce you to our California sea lions\, Northern elephant seals\, Pacific harbor seals\, or Northern fur seal patients. Our visitor yard features interactive displays\, marine mammal artifacts\, and a Treasure Trove gift shop. There is no charge for admission\, but donations are appreciated! PMMC also offers educational programs for all ages. \nOPEN DAILY FROM 10:00 am TO 4:00 pm\n \nReservations are required for groups of 10 or more only\, smaller groups need not make reservations. We are closed on Thanksgiving\, Christmas Eve\, Christmas Day\, and New Year’s Day. \n\n\nBOOK YOUR GROUP HERE!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n20612 Laguna Canyon Road Laguna Beach\, CA 92651 \nHISTORY\nPacific Marine Mammal Center began as Friends of the Sea Lion in 1971 with only three volunteers: Jim Stauffer\, John Cunningham\, and Dr. Rose Ekeberg. \nIn the spring of 1971\, a little girl approached Jim Stauffer\, a Newport Beach lifeguard\, on the beach.  The little girl told Jim that she had seen a seal on the beach.  Jim hopped in his lifeguard jeep and went to go investigate.  What he found was a young Pacific harbor seal. When Jim placed the animal in his jeep\, it leaped right out.  Jim decided the animal must be healthy and just needed to rest\, so he returned to work.  \nConcern for the animal nagged at him all day. When Jim returned to check on the small seal\, it was still on the beach.  Jim picked up the seal and took it to the Dover Shores Animal Hospital\, where Dr. Rod La Shell examined the animal and found that it had lungworms.  With advice from Dr. La Shell\, Jim nursed the harbor seal back to health and released the animal back into the ocean. \n \nMISSION STATEMENT\n“The Pacific Marine Mammal Center rescues\, rehabilitates\, and releases marine mammals and inspires ocean stewardship through research\, education\, and collaboration.” \nRescue\n \nUnlike whales and dolphins\, seals and sea lions don’t have to remain in the water in order to survive. The animals beach themselves to be warm and dry when feeling ill. They seek rest on land for a variety of reasons and are not always in need of intervention. Our staff is trained to recognize animals suffering from infections\, malnourishment\, pneumonia\, gill net strangulation\, etc. which can harm an animal’s chance for survival. \nRehabilitation\n \nWhen a “patient” is admitted\, our staff performs all necessary procedures under the direction and protocols set by the Animal Care Director and our Veterinary Medical Director. During the course of rehabilitation\, animals require a variety of treatments such as administration of antibiotics and subcutaneous fluids\, tube feeding\, force-feeding\, wound care\, etc. \nMost animals come in dehydrated and the most effective means to provide fluids and nourishment is through tube feeding. The process requires the blending of fish\, electrolytes\, warm water\, vitamins\, and medication into a fish formula. This formula is fed to the animals by inserting a flexible tube into the stomach using large syringes. As soon as the animals are hydrated and stable\, we wean them to eat whole fish. \nRelease\n \nOnce an animal has gained an optimal weight and is competing for food\, it’s ready for release. Prior to release\, each animal is tagged with an identification number. The color-coded tags indicate the animal has been rehabilitated and helps identify the specific animal and care center in case the animal needs care in the future. We strive to return every one of our patients back to the wild once their care with us is complete. \nEducation\nIt is not enough to rescue and rehabilitate these animals. We must communicate what needs to be done so that positive change can happen. PMMC strives to inspire ocean stewardship in all generations through sharing the stories of the animals we assist. Over 50\,000 people learn about conservation by talking with our education docents and interacting with exhibits in our visitor yard each year. We welcome over 7\,000 children\, most through our free programs for at-risk communities\, in our onsite experiential-based education programs that teach the importance of marine science and eco-friendly behavior. Our outreach team engages thousands of more people in offsite programs\, which share the importance of community involvement. Additionally\, through distance learning technology\, our education department brings conservation messaging to children and adults all over the nation and internationally. \nResearch\n \nAn important part of marine mammal recovery is ongoing research. Research is being done to find the pathological conditions that affect the marine mammals of Southern California. According to the teachings of Tibetan Buddhism\, the Bardo journey offers practitioners a precious opportunity to awaken to their true Buddha nature and find liberation from suffering. \nInternationally acclaimed Tibetan singer/songwriter Tenzin Choegyal will be joined by award-winning composer Simone Giuliani on piano and actor\, musician\, and dancer Tsering Dorjee Bawa\, performing the rare Black Hat masked ritual dance. The concert is narrated by Christiana Polites\, director of Tibetan Medicine & Buddhist Center Pure Land Farms\, with visuals produced by media artist and director of the UCLA Art | Sci Center\, Victoria Vesna. \nAbout the Artists \nTenzin Choegyal is a world renowned musician in the Tibetan tradition. The son of Tibetan nomads\, he feels a particular connection to the music of the high Himalayan plateau. While proudly continuing the unbroken nomadic lineage which is central to his repertoire\, Tenzin also embraces opportunities to take his music into more contemporary\, uncharted territory\, both in the studio and on stage. Tenzin has opened for His Holiness the Dalai Lama and collaborated with Philip Glass\, Patti Smith\, Anoushka Shankar\, and Charlotte Gainsbourg. Alongside Jesse Paris Smith and Laurie Anderson\, he recorded the 2021 Grammy-nominated Songs from the Bardo\, released through Smithsonian Folkways. He also has nine independent albums\, three with his fusion band Tibet2Timbuk2. \nTsering Dorjee Bawa is an award-winning artist who has been a Tibetan music and arts performer for almost three decades. He earned his master’s degree studying Tibetan secular dance and music at the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts (TIPA)\, Dharamsala\, India\, where he was privileged to study under legendary artists. He has since traveled the world sharing his knowledge and performing Tibetan Opera\, central Tibetan Step Dance\, and Cham\, a series of colorful\, masked ritual dances. In addition to performing onstage from Seattle Children’s Theatre to Lincoln Center in New York\, he has acted in several notable films\, including the 1999 Oscar-nominated Himalaya\, and My Son Tenzin (2017). Tsering resides in the Bay Area\, where he has established a community school program to preserve Tibetan language\, music\, and dance for a new generation. \nSimone Giuliani is a director\, producer\, and composer born in Florence\, Italy\, and based in New York and Los Angeles. He has worked with such artists as Andrea Bocelli\, Wu-Tang Clan\, Cibo Matto\, Bebel Gilberto\, and many more. He has collaborated with the London Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra\, and directed a live concert for Pope Francis inside the Roman Forum. Giuliani is director of programs for MOMENT NYC\, a music education non-profit presenting the history of music in New York City through performances in public schools. DESCRIPTION:OPEN EVERYDAY- Griffith Park\nThe Old LA Zoo\, or The Griffith Park Zoo\, opened in 1912 and closed in 1966 with the opening of the new\, Los Angeles Zoo. The abandoned site of the Griffith Park Zoo\, complete with the ruins of animal enclosures\, is now a picnic area and hiking trail in Griffith Park. \n  \n \nThe Old LA Zoo opened in 1912 with a grand total of only 15 animals. Bears\, Lions\, Monkeys\, Macaw’s\, Elephants\, Reptiles\, Goats\, and Turtles now lived in the zoo\, which was built on the original site of Griffith J. Griffith‘s defunct ostrich farm. \n  \n \nAs Los Angeles grew\, the small Griffith Park Zoo was increasingly criticized as an “inadequate\, ugly\, poorly designed despite drawing more than 2 million visitors a year.  \nIn 1958\, the city decided to create a brand new zoo\, and the Griffith Park Zoo closed in August 1966. Its animals were transferred to the new Los Angeles Zoo 2 miles away\, which opened a few months later. \n  \n \nThe animal enclosures\, with the bars removed\, were left as ruins and remain today. A large picnic area was added\, and NOW every summer\, the zoo is the location for the Independent Shakespeare Company’s  Free “Shakespeare in the Park” performances. \nThe Old Zoo is located on Griffith Park Dr. Only 2 miles from today’s LA Zoo\,   \n  \n \nUpon arriving\, you will see a small parking lot. Follow the path Up the hill to reach the abandoned enclosure.  \nUpon arriving\, you will enter many of the original Grotto’s. We work with six non-profit partners and several different LA City departments to transform streets and neighborhoods. \nOur Priorities\n\nPlanting in low-canopy neighborhoods\nPromoting a sustainable city by maximizing our canopy’s energy efficiency\, stormwater capture\, human health benefits\, and climate adaptation benefits\nCreating jobs in tree planting and care\n\n \n\n\n\n\nHow We Work\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCity Plants is a non-profit organization running a public-private partnership between the City of Los Angeles and six other non-profit organizations. Together\, we work with community groups\, residents\, and businesses to coordinate tree planting and care throughout Los Angeles. \nCity Plants is a continuation of LA’s former tree planting program\, Million Trees LA. Our current name reflects our changing priorities\, which are to focus our efforts in low canopy areas and to plant in a way that maximizes the benefits trees provide rather than on reaching a specific number of trees. \nIn 2001\, LADWP created the “Trees for a Green LA” program and started planting trees for energy efficiency. By subsequently partnering with City Plants to run this program\, the utility has been able to increase its effectiveness and reach\, leveraging energy efficiency resources to bring over $5 million of state and federal funds to Los Angeles for planting and caring for new trees. LADWP remains City Plants’ largest partner in its citywide tree-planting efforts. Through this partnership\, City Plants is able to provide free shade trees for residents and property owners in the City of LA\, along with important information on where to plant those trees to maximize energy efficiency in homes or businesses. \nOur urban forest nourishes and protects us all. It’s up to each of us to take care of it and grow a greener future for our kids. \n\n\n\n\nWhy Trees?\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLos Angeles is at a crossroads when it comes to the health of our trees. Our city has lost thousands of trees due to drought and pests and will lose thousands more due to old age in the coming decades. The City’s Urban Forestry Division estimates that we will lose between one-third and one-half of our street trees in the next 40 years due to old age alone. \nWe cannot take our trees for granted. We must plant now to ensure a green future for our kids and grandkids.\nWe are losing trees at a time when we need them the most. We expect our City to get hotter in the coming decades\, and trees are key to cooling our homes\, streets\, and schools. We must plant aggressively now to ensure that as temperatures rise\, our City is equipped with a cooling canopy of healthy\, mature trees. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n   Trees filter asthma-causing pollution out of the air and help reduce the greenhouse gases that cause global warming.\n   They help us protect our famous beaches by capturing polluted stormwater and helping it sink into the ground rather than wash out to sea.\n   Trees add beauty to our neighborhoods\, which increases property values and makes business corridors more attractive to shoppers.\n   Trees are an excellent way to keep our yards green while using less water\, especially when planting one of the many drought-resilient varieties available through our program.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nwww.cityplants.org\n \n  \nFind more

An anchor on the Sunset Strip since its opening in 1964\, the Whisky A Go-Go has played host to rock ‘n’ roll’s most important bands\, from the Doors\, Janis Joplin\, and Led Zeppelin to today’s up-and-coming new artists. \n \nOn January 16\, 1964\, a small club on the Sunset Strip opened its doors for the first time.\n\nIt was The Whisky a Go Go\, the first-ever live music venue to be inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame and the most iconic club on the Strip. Founded by Mario Maglieri\, Elmer Valentine\, and Phil Tanzini – The Whisky had to spell its name without the ‘e’ in whiskey because Los Angeles city zoning laws didn’t allow any club to be named after alcohols (The Whisky constantly had problems with the city and for a while had the name “The Whisk?”). The world-famous Whisky a Go Go opened on Jan. 15\, 1964\, with a concert by Johnny Rivers. \nA DJ named Joanie Labine (the first DJ at The Whisky) played records in a booth that was suspended to the right of the stage in between Johnny Rivers’ sets. Labine entertained the crowd by dancing and the idea of the go-go dancer was born.
