In its original sense\, the term “museum” meant a spot dedicated to the muses – “a place where man’s mind could attain a mood of aloofness above everyday affairs.” By far the most important museum of antiquity was the great institution at Alexandria founded by Ptolemy Philadelphus in the third century before Christ\, (an endeavor supported by a grant from the treasury). And no treatment of the museum would be complete without mention of Noah’s Ark in which we find the complete Museum of Natural History the world has ever seen. \nThe Museum of Jurassic Technology traces its origins to this period when many of the essential collections of today were beginning to take form. Many exhibits which we today have come to know as part of the Museum were\, in fact\, formally part of other less well-known collections and were subsequently consolidated into the single collection which we have come to know as The Museum of Jurassic Technology and thus configured\, received great public acclaim as well as much discussion in scholastic circles. \n\nHours\nMonday – Wednesday: Closed\nThursday – Friday : 2:00pm – 8:00pm\nSaturday – Sunday: 12:00pm – 6:00pm \n\n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nwww.mjt.org\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

SUMMARY:FREE FAMILY NIGHT
DESCRIPTION:FIRST FRIDAY OF THE MONTH in Pasadena\nThe first Tuesday of every month from 4:00 to 8:00pm is Kids Space Museum Free Family Night.  Admission to the Museum is FREE for everyone during these hours only. Families can engage with special programming and performers that highlight cultures and traditions from around the world. Expect crowds and long admission lines during the spring and summer months. \n \nThe Mission & History of Kids Space Children’s Museum\nThe mission of this foundation is to nurture the potential of all children through driven experiences\, inspiring them to become joyful\, active learners.\n\n\n\nTo help us achieve this\, we work by the following core values: \n\nRespect—We respect our guests by asking their opinions and listening. We also respect our guests and embrace diversity.\nIntegrity—We do what we said we will do even when it is not the easy thing to do. We want to be transparent with our finances so our investors know how they are making a difference.\nSafety—The safety of our guests comes first. We have a safe environment where young minds of all ages can explore\, learn\, and have fun.\nExperiential Learning—Education is the core of who we are. We believe that when learning becomes fun\, the learner does so willingly.\n\n\nThe Purpose of a Kids Space Children’s Museum\nAn incredible seed bed of learning and discovery\, the purpose of a children’s museum is to inspire children to learn and grow\, equip parents and teachers\, and to be a safe place where learners of all abilities can do so at their own pace and focus on topics of interest to them. This is often referred to as “Free Range Learning.” What makes us different from a school is our approach to informal education. We believe in giving our guests hands-on experiences that are relevant and inspiring. \nIn Dr. Howard Gardner’s book\, Intelligence Reframed: Multiple Intelligences for the 21st Century\, he points out the value of children’s museums in helping a child discover their learning style. Kidspace provides a learning environment filled with the wonder and joy of the natural world. \nA definition from the Association of Children’s Museums: \nKIDS SPACE MUSEUM is a nonprofit institution that provides children with hands-on learning experiences and interactive activities\, because children learn through exploration and play. The first children’s museum\, called the Brooklyn Children’s Museum\, was founded in the year 1899. The California African American Museum’s mission is to research\, collect\, preserve\, and interpret for public enrichment the history\, art\, and culture of African Americans with an emphasis on California and the western United States. \n \nFREE! TUES – SUNDAY- Exposition Park\nCAAM’s permanent collection consists of over 4\,000 objects ranging from the 1800s to the present. It encompasses paintings\, photographs\, film\, sculpture\, historical documents\, and artifacts\, and it spans nineteenth-century landscape paintings to modern artworks to contemporary mixed-media reflections on cultural and political events. \n \n  \nThe Museum’s first acquisitions included a bronze bust of civil rights activist Dr. Mary Mcleod Bethune by artist Richmond Barthé and a sculpture by artist Maren Hassinger\, then at the start of her career. These laid the perfect groundwork for CAAM’s mandate to assemble a comprehensive\, thoughtful\, and wide-reaching collection. \n \nCAAM’s deepest holdings include art made or connected to African Americans in California and the western United States. However\, the Museum also has significant works of contemporary art from the African diaspora (including Haiti\, Brazil\, and Jamaica)\, as well as traditional African art from Western\, Central\, and Sub-Saharan Africa. CAAM aims to represent the diverse contributions of African Americans in the United States\, but also to interpret how the past has affected identity in the present. \nToday\, CAAM oversees\, exhibits\, and conserves a rapidly growing collection. Each quarter\, curators review the current holdings and decide as a committee on future acquisitions. We view our collection as a living body — constantly evolving\, growing\, and reflecting the world in which we live. \n \nSome examples of CAAM’s collection include the Walter Burrell Collection of audio recordings of Burrell’s interviews with African American celebrities\, broadcast by a local radio station in the early 1970s; the oral histories of Celes King\, who was both a local civil rights activist as well as a former Tuskegee airman; and selections from the collection of visual artist John Outterbridge. \n \nHours\nTuesdays – Saturdays: 10:00 am – 5:00 pm\nSundays: 11:00 am – 5:00 pm\nMondays: Closed \n  \n\n\nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \ncaamuseum.org\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

SUMMARY:AMIR’S GARDEN
DESCRIPTION:OPEN YEAR ROUND- Griffith Park\nThe Trail to Amir’s Garden is a 1.1 mile heavily trafficked loop trail located LA’s Griffith Park. This shady rest stop and memorial garden features beautiful wild flowers and water-bearing\, fire-resistive succulents interspersed with natives and memorial trees and plants. The trail is primarily used for hiking\, walking\, running\, nature trips\, and horses and is accessible year-round. It is rated as moderately difficult trail. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash. \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe gardens are cared for by official volunteers since its creation in 1971. Amir’s Garden is considered a rest stop and not a dedicated picnic area\, therefore it can’t be reserved for events. The nearest restrooms are located at Mineral Wells Picnic Area. Activities related to the care of a large garden may be taking place at any time\, including watering. Amir’s Garden is a most pleasant place for a hike-in picnic\, with a selection of picnic tables.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe History of Amir’s Garden\nAmir Dialameh worked a steep hill in Griffith Park for than three decades with a pick and shovel and turned a scorched\, barren landscape into a lush\, shaded grove that is visited daily by a steady stream of hikers and horseback riders. \nFor thirty-two years\, Dialameh worked in the garden most days of the week\, hiking up a service road to the rugged Mineral Wells location. Over the years\, he planted pine and jacaranda trees along with rose bushes\, geraniums\, oleander\, and yucca that grew into the beautiful oasis it is today. \n“…what you need first and foremost here is shade\,” Dialameh explained in 1989. “That’s why I planted trees like the jacaranda. In ten years\, this place will be covered with their branches.” \nHis words were prophetic. Today Amir’s Garden is nearly five-acres of shady rest stop for Griffith Park’s hikers and equestrians. \nDialameh first came to appreciate nature as a child during hiking trips in the Alborz Mountains of his native Iran. As his love of hiking and nature developed\, so did his affinity for the United States of America. \n“I was intrigued by the volunteerism that built this country… people doing things instead of relying on the government.” In 1963 while visiting his brother in Pittsburgh\, Dialameh made the ultimate decision to immigrate and moved to the Los Angeles area. \n\n\nGetting There\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe hike to Amir’s Garden actually begins near one of Griffith Park’s larger picnic areas\, Mineral Well Picnic Area. Find the dirt service road heading west from the intersection of Griffith Park Drive and Mineral Wells Road. \nWalk straight through an immediate junction and follow the dirt road on a southwestern climb to Amir’s Garden. After a horseshoe bend in the road\, and a quarter mile from the start\, you will pass a water tower that is accompanied by broad views stretching beyond Griffith Park toward Glendale\, the Verdugo Mountains\, and San Gabriel Mountains. \n \nLooking back down the trail\nAfter less than half a mile\, the trail arrives at Amir’s Garden where you’ll discover a pocket of tall sycamores arcing over a mountainside of verdant plants including succulents like ice plant and jade. There are a few picnic tables at the entrance of Amir’s Garden and others hidden throughout. \n  \n \nAmir’s Garden\n\nStroll through a web of footpaths and recharge your batteries in this refreshing Griffith Park retreat. With extra effort\, you may continue up North Trail toward Mount Hollywood\, Mount Bell and other peaks in Griffith Park. Otherwise\, return the way you came for a satisfying 1-mile round trip hike. No fee or permit is required to hike to Amir’s Garden and dogs are welcome.\n\nTo get to the trailhead: Take the 5 Freeway to the Los Feliz Boulevard exit. Drive west on Los Feliz Boulevard to the first light and turn north on Crystal Springs Road. After 1.5 miles\, turn left on Griffith Park Drive and drive 1.2 miles to the intersection with Mineral Wells Road. Turn left onto Mineral Wells Road and park immediately in the spaces along the road. The trail to Amir’s Garden heads west from the intersection of Mineral Wells Road and Griffith Park Drive. \nTrailhead address: Mineral Wells Road & Griffith Park Drive\, Griffith Park\, Los Angeles\, CA 90027 \n\n\n\n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nhttp://www.amirsgarden.org/\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Rock Pool at Malibu Creek Park
DESCRIPTION:HIKE TO THE ROCK POOL AT MALIBU CREEK STATE PARK IN AGOURA HILLS! One of the most popular destinations in Malibu Creek State Park is the Rock Pool\, a picturesque place that is easily accessible for all ages. \n \nGetting to the Rock Pool\nOne fun way to get to the Rock Pool is via the Grassland Trail\, accessible on Mulholland Highway just west of Las Virgenes Road\, where street parking is available. Take the Grassland trail (as seen in the photo below)\, with moderate hills\, .7 miles to the Crags Road main fire road/trail in Malibu Creek State Park\, and turn right. Alternatively\, you can park in the Park’s lower parking lot\, pay $12 for a bit more secure parking\, and take the main trail into the park. \n \nGrassland Trail \nSoon you’ll see the sign where you can see the Visitor Center is on the left. That’s the direction you’ll be taking to get to the Rock Pool. Veering to the right gets you to another popular site at the Park\, the old M*A*S*H television series set. \nYou’ll see a bridge over the creek (seen below after the winter rains) that takes you to the Visitor Center (open weekends noon to 4pm). The Rock Pool is the trail on the right (west) before reaching the bridge. Look carefully and you may see the little sign that says “Rock Pool.” \n \n \nCalifornia State Parks\, which manages the Park\, warns visitors not to jump or dive into the Rock Pool as it is dangerous. But it is certainly fun to explore and quite a beautiful area. \n\n\n1925 Las Virgenes Road\, Cornell\, CA 91301 \, United States \nConsidered the recreational crown jewel of the Santa Monica Mountains\, Malibu Creek State Park has over 8\,000 acres of rolling tall grass plains\, oak savannahs\, and dramatic peaks. It’s no wonder many call it “The Yosemite of Southern California”. \nThe park\, formerly owned by 20th Century Fox Studios\, opened in 1976 and has welcomed millions of visitors since. The stunning terrain here that has been seen all over the world in movies and television awaits you. Come hike\, ride\, climb and explore L.A.’s most spectacular park! \n \nMalibu Creek State Park is accessible in Calabasas\, at 1925 Las Virgenes Road\, south of Mulholland. The park contains over 8\,000 acres of rugged\, beautiful hills\, trails\, and scenery. It stretches from Agoura Hills down to Malibu\, down to Malibu Lagoon State Beach\, covering much of the 25-mile Malibu Creek that flows from Boney Mountain down to the Lagoon. Malibu Creek is the only stream channel that crosses through the Santa Monica Mountain range. \nThere are three natural preserves in the park\, Liberty Canyon\, Udell Gorge\, and Kaslow\, which protect Valley Oaks\, rare plants\, and volcanic formations. \nHIKING\n \nThe park’s trails have something for everyone – from novices to those looking for real challenges. The easy routes wind through the valleys and the challenging trails climb the walls of those valleys. \nCAMPING\nCouple camping — Image by © Fancy/Veer/Corbis\nUrban camping at its best! In the park\, you are surrounded by dramatic peaks\, majestic oaks\, and wild creatures\, but just minutes away is a posh Albertsons grocery store and restaurants. The campground contains 62 tent campsites\, flush toilets\, solar-heated showers\, and four RV campsites. Every campsite contains a fire pit and picnic table but no hookups. Summers can be hot\, so prime time is Fall\, Winter\, and Spring. If you get up early\, you’ll likely see deer nibbling on grass in the fields near the campground. For full campground information and reservations\, use ReserveCalifornia: https://reservecalifornia.com/CaliforniaWebHome/ \nBIKING\nMalibu Creek is a great place for serious mountain bikers because of the plentiful steep terrain – especially Bulldog Road and Mesa Peak Motorway (where there are fewer hikers). Beginners can have fun along Crags Road – the main hiking trail through the park. Those seeking additional challenges on two wheels can take on the dry creek bed between Century Lake and the M*A*S*H set. \nROCK CLIMBING\n \nLots of great climbs from 5.8 to 5.10c are found around the Rock Pool. The easiest to reach is the Planet of the Apes Wall – so named because scenes from the “Apes” films were filmed on and around it. “Apes” is almost all overhanging routes. Over at the Rock Pool\, are another ten routes\, some that overhang the water. Fun bouldering here too. \n\nDOGS\nDogs are allowed in the parking lot and campground only. They are not allowed on the backcountry trails. \nPARKING\nAll-day parking is $12.00 (current as of March 2010). On weekdays\, there is no one at the entrance booth\, so the honor system is employed through a self-pay system. Your day fee covers same-day access/parking to ANY California State Park and/or Beach \nSAFETY\nFIRE is a constant danger\, especially in summer and fall. Smoking and all fires are prohibited outside of the parking area\, picnic area\, and campground. \nGas and charcoal fires are always allowed in the campground. Due to the long-running California drought\, clearance to burn a wood fire in the campground is updated daily by the fire officials using the same method for determining daily fire danger as posted on signs common in our state and national forests. \n\n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nwww.malibucreekstatepark.org\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

SUMMARY:Tide Pool Heaven
DESCRIPTION:TRAILS & TIDE POOLING in Palos Verdes\nAbalone Cove Shoreline Park is a coastal tide pool treasure\, located at the tip of the Palos Verdes Peninsula. The park contains an ecological preserve and is famous for its outstanding tide pools. \nIt is worth checking tide charts to visit these beaches at low tide for the tide pools and the tunnels. \nDAILY TIDE CHARTS HERE\n  \n \nOut at the end and right at the base of the points there are amazing rock tunnels where waves rush in and crash through. \n  \nTrails meander on the bluff out to excellent views from two prominent points. The park contains a State Ecological Preserve and taking of protected animals and marine life is prohibited. There is direct access to a parking lot off Palos Verdes Drive South. Access to Abalone Cove Beach is by a long trail from the parking lot. To access Sacred Cove\, users must walk along Palos Verdes Drive South to 1 of 2 trails between Portuguese and Inspiration Points.
