SUMMARY:FOWLER MUSEUM AT UCLA
DESCRIPTION:FREE EVERY DAY! @ UCLA\nThe Fowler Museum at UCLA explores global arts and cultures with an emphasis on works from Africa\, Asia\, the Pacific\, and the Americas—past and present. The Fowler enhances understanding and appreciation of the diverse peoples\, cultures\, and religions of the world through dynamic exhibitions\, publications\, and public programs\, informed by interdisciplinary approaches and the perspectives of the cultures represented. \nAlso featured is the work of international contemporary artists presented within the complex frameworks of politics\, culture and social action. \nFowler Museum at UCLA provides exciting\, informative and thought-provoking exhibitions and events for the UCLA community and the people of greater Los Angeles and beyond. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAreas of the Collection\n\n\n\n\nARTS OF AFRICA AND THE AFRICAN DIASPORA\n \nOne of the largest and finest in the United States\, and one of the top twenty African collections worldwide\, this collection offers a superb representation of the arts of many African nations\, including objects from Senegal\, Nigeria\, Ghana\, Cameroon\, Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire)\, Kenya\, Zambia\, and South Africa. The Yoruba collection alone is one of the three finest in the world. It contains a spectacular array of beaded objects\, including a majestic throne\, elaborate chiefly gowns\, and sophisticated divination regalia. \nA collection of post-apartheid election materials and contemporary South African art is being developed\, as are a number of collections of popular urban arts from countries including Tanzania and Muslim Senegal. Recently\, more than 400 textiles made by the Kuba peoples of the Democratic Republic of the Congo were gifted by the Christensen Foundation. \nThe collection represents some of the finest examples of men’s embroidered raffia pile cloths and women’s appliqué cloths. This collection complements already significant holdings of West African textiles from countries such as Mali and Ghana\, including kente and adinkra cloth and Asafo flags. The museum also has significant holdings of arts from the African Americas\, notably arts of Haitian Vodou\, Brazil and Suriname. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nARTS OF THE AMERICAS\n \nThese holdings include a comprehensive collection of pre-Columbian ceramics with the best representations from West Mexico\, the Valley of Mexico\, and pre-Columbian Peru (with special strengths in the art of the Moche). The Fowler also possesses a cohesive collection of Guatemalan costumes; an extensive collection of Mexican clothing; textiles of Peru; and a comprehensive representation of field-collected market materials from Michoacan\, Mexico. Complementing the pre-Columbian collections are field collections of the Warao and Yecuana Indians of the Orinoco Delta of Venezuela and contemporary Latin American popular arts including Mexican trees of life\, Day of the Dead figures\, and masks from Metepec\, Oaxaca\, Michoacan\, Jalisco\, Peubla\, and Guanajuato. \nNative American materials from the U.S. and Canada are a small but significant part of the collection. Materials from the United States and Canada include well-known Northwest Coast material\, as well as a notable cross section of late nineteenth-century Inuit art and material culture. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nARTS OF ASIA AND THE PACIFIC \n \n  \nThe Fowler Museum at UCLA collections from Insular Southeast Asia\, including Indonesia\, the Philippines\, Malaysia\, and aboriginal Taiwan\, are among the strongest in the United States. The Indonesian and Philippine textiles reinforce the Fowler Museum’s standing as a major repository for the textile arts. Also included are significant collections of sculptural material from Sumatra\, Borneo\, Sulawesi\, and Luzon\, puppetry from Java and Bali\, basketry from Indonesia and Philippines\, and metalwork from the Philippines. The primary strength of the Pacific collections lies in materials from Papua New Guinea\, especially the Papuan Gulf\, Trobriand Islands\, Sepik River\, and Maprik region. Australia and Polynesia are also represented by sizeable collections\, including 45 rare Maori cloaks. \nThe collections from mainland Asia are smaller but growing rapidly\, due to current collecting priorities. A collection of betel-chewing paraphernalia\, representing several countries in South and Southeast Asia\, is considered one of the finest in the world. Other holdings include textiles from Bhutan\, Pakistan\, India and Japan\, baskets and decorative arts from Japan\, puppetry from China\, Thailand\, India\, and Turkey\, and art and artifacts from Nepal. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nARCHAEOLOGICAL COLLECTIONS\n \nThe Fowler Museum at UCLA also serves as a repository for archaeological collections acquired during research conducted by UCLA faculty\, staff\, students\, and other professional archaeologists. Documentation of the collections includes artifact catalogs\, excavation notes\, maps\, and photographs. These collections serve primarily as an archive for teaching and research. The Museum is compliant with guidelines mandates by the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) and has been signaled out by the State of California for its exemplary efforts. \nArchaeological collection areas include: \nCalifornia \nCollections from approximately 1100 sites\, mostly in Southern California. \nSouthwest \nSignificant collections from the Rainbow Bridge-Monument Valley Expedition of 1933-1938 and several Parowan Fremont sites in Utah excavated in the 1950’s\, and other Anasazi and Hohokam sites. \nMexico \nIncludes objects from 218 sites\, mostly in western and central Mexico. \nSudan \nThe Nubian/Egyptian fortress site at Askut is the source of approximately 60\,000 artifacts excavated by UCLA archaeologist Alexander Badawy in conjunction with the Aswan High Dam Salvage Campaign\, 1962-1964. \nOld World stone tool collection \nIncludes tools from Europe and the Middle East. \n\n\nMUSEUM HOURS\n\n\n\n\nAdmission is FREE \nMonday: closed\nTuesday: closed\nWednesday: 12 – 8pm\nThursday: 12 – 5pm\nFriday: 12 – 5pm\nSaturday: 12 – 5pm\nSunday: 12 – 5pm \n\n\n\n\n\nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nfowler.ucla.edu\n \n\n  \nFind more

SUMMARY:Hollywood Forever Cemetery Morning Yoga
DESCRIPTION:YOGA CLASSES- Hollywood\n\n\n\nHollywood Forever Cemetery presents Morning Yoga Classes every day but Friday starting at 9:30am. In Buddhist and Hindu teachings\, the Graveyard\, or Charnal grounds\, is a favored place of practice where yogis must confront our mortal destiny\, our fear of death\, and our aversion to impermanence. \n  \n \nIn the Summer of 2020\, as our favorite indoor Yoga studios were forced to close and we found ourselves less compliant in ZOOM classes\, a few of us started coming to Hollywood Forever to practice safely together in the mornings. \nWe are now honored to offer this experience to all yogis\, from beginners to advanced\, looking to deepen their practice in a safe outdoor setting with green grass and quacking ducks. \nWe practice on the Hollywood Forever Cemetery Fairbanks Lawn\, where Cinespia movies are screened\, so there is ample space to spread out and safely distance as you enrich your practice with our sangha community. \n \nAttendance Tips:Cost: Donation based \nParking: FREE! Park anywhere alongside the lawn. Please drive slowly as the property is home to peacocks\, cats\, and many other furry and feathered creatures. \nExperience:  All levels welcome! \nBring:   Mat/Towel/Water & Sunscreen.  Make sure you have a towel to place under your mat as the morning lawns can be dewy. \nSafety:   Give yourself plenty of social distance – we have room to spare so spread out.  Please wear a mask until you are on your mat. \nRain = No Class \n*Please complete your Yoga Liability Waiver online click here. \n  \n \nClass Descriptions:\nVinyasa Flow is a style of yoga characterized by a series of postures (asanas) arranged together so that you move from one to another\, seamlessly\, using breath.  Expect a work out. \nSilent DiscoOHM Yoga is a Vinyasa Flow class with the added feature of personal headphones for each yogi to hear music and the teacher’s guidance.  You and your classmates will share your own intimate world of sound curated by Erica. \nKundalini Yoga is the ancient combination of postures (Asana) with breath-work (Pranayama)\, meditation (Dhyana)\, and word/sound repetition (Mantra) to achieve Bliss (Samadhi).  We do not venerate gurus or teachers of the yogic past\, instead seeking the guru within each of us.  Above all\, we are committed to the ancient yogic principle of Ahimsa – non-harming – with compassion as our guiding principle. \n\n  \n \n\nHours\nMonday: 9:00am – 10:15am\nTuesday: 9:00am – 10:15am\nWednesday: 9:00am – 10:30am\nThursday: 9:00am – 10:15am\nFriday: no yoga\nSaturday: 9:00am – 10:05am\nSunday: 9:00am – 10:00am \n\n\n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nhttps://hollywoodforever.com/yoga-schedule/\n \n  \nFind more

SUMMARY:Graham Garden
DESCRIPTION:OPEN EVERY DAY- DTLA Wells Fargo Center\nGraham Garden integrates Fountain Figures I-IV\, a collection of graceful sculptures created by late Los Angeles artist Robert Graham\, in a newly designed outdoor plaza at Halo. For over fifty years\, Robert Graham’s observation of the female form and use of scale allowed him to explore and create a range of intimate sized works and large public monuments\, widely celebrated for their precise iconic detail. \nThe sculptures were originally part of CRA/LA’s mission in 1985 to incorporate public art in redevelopment projects and revitalize Downtown Los Angeles. The four sculptures are currently situated in an exterior landscaped setting that Graham’s son\, Steven Graham\, consulted on as part of the renovation at Wells Fargo Center. \n  \n \nRobert Graham\, was a Mexican born sculptor\, and although you may not be familiar with his name\, you probably ARE familiar with some of his work. Discover encyclopedia articles\, multimedia\, primary sources\, games\, and other learning resources that support student research and reinforce curriculum standards. \n\n\n\n\n\nSIGN ON HERE WITH YOUR LOS ANGELES PUBLIC LIBRARY CARD\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n  \n \n  \n  \n\n  \n\nAge-appropriate for K-12\n\n\nBritannica School offers age-appropriate resources at 4 levels\, the Learning Zone for early learners and elementary\, middle and high school levels. \n\n  \n\n\n \nElementary\nSelect Elementary learning and begin your adventure looking for people\, places\, and things. Watch and learn with videos and animations. Have fun with games and activities. \n  \n \nMiddle & School Versions Grow as they do\nMany online products offer multiple levels for different ages\, but often struggling readers are reluctant to move to a lower level because the interface and experience are designed for younger students. With Britannica School\, content is available at all three reading levels and students can move quickly from one level to another without changing the look and feel of the site. Content and Interface work together to give the user an experience tailored to their needs. For example\, if elementary students move to a level with more advanced content\, their interface becomes more advanced as well; but middle and high school students stay in their more advanced interfaces\, even if they choose level 1. \n  \n  \n \nFor Educators and Home School Teachers\n\n\nOur biggest users tell us that students\, teachers and librarians all want to go beyond looking up content. You want to filter\, tag favorites\, adjust reading levels\, share content\, and serendipitously discover new and related ideas. \nWith Britannica School\, educators can map text and multimedia to classroom activities on the fly and even toggle within an article to see the State and Common Core standards associated with it. Teachers can create\, save and share lesson plans using the new lesson plan builder. They can map Britannica content\, define steps and activities\, select materials and share their ideas with other teachers. They can also access and review plans created by other teachers. \n\n\n\nBritannica School’s ESL/ELL Support\n\n\nEnglish language learners may choose to have articles read aloud with each word highlighted as it is read to increase comprehension. \nOther tools are built in for support as well including the Quick Click dictionary that provides definitions and audio pronunciations right when the reader needs them without leaving the article. \nBritannica School also offers multiple translation tools with an emphasis on Spanish-English translation but with more than 50 world languages available. \n\n\nUse Anywhere\nBritannica School is accessible at school\, home or anywhere you have an internet connection. As well as local emerging talent!! \n\n\n\n\n\nOPEN MIC TO FOLLOW THE SHOW (STARTS AROUND 10:30 PM ON TUESDAYS) FREE SHOW! PLENTY OF FREE PARKING! THE BAR IS CASH ONLY! CHILL ASS NEIGHBORHOOD! CIGARETTE STORE ACROSS THE STREET! \n\n \n3100 Los Feliz Blvd\, Los Angeles\, CA 90039 \n  \n \nThe Roost has changed hands many times\, and attempts to peg down an actual opening date have been unsuccessful\, but the bar once had a wigwam on its roof and was called\, fittingly\, the Wigwam. This was likely in the 1950s or ‘60s\, according to one bartender. It was also formerly known as Donna’s Red Carpet and Robin’s Roost. The notoriously heartbroken late singer-songwriter Elliott Smith used to frequent the bar\, which makes sense because to this day after a given hour (around 10 p.m.) the craggy\, old regulars are replaced with a consciously disheveled crowd of musicians and artists. \n \nPlaces like the Roost are quickly becoming extinct in Los Angeles. The counterculture lifestyle as defined by the modern hipster is morphing into the mainstream\, as is its habit of appropriating places\, fashions and art once considered marginal by the masses. One day someone will buy the Roost and turn it into a fancy simulacrum of itself and you’ll be sad that you didn’t know it back when. \n \nMixed drinks are strong and cheap here\, and something in the air at the Roost (maybe the smell of popcorn mixed with a legacy of stale smoke) makes a simple gin and tonic or vodka soda taste like the stuff of gods. Don’t be afraid to order from the well. Yeah\, it’s gut-rot level stuff\, but this is where you drink from the lowest shelf — and like it. \n\nHours\nOpen Daily: 12:00 pm – 2:00 am\nHappy Hour: 12:00 pm – 7:00 pm DAILY\n\nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nwww.eventbrite.com/e/tuesdays-free-stand-up-comedy\nFind more

SUMMARY:The Venice Run Club
DESCRIPTION:EVERY WEEK\, EVERY RUN\, EVERY BODY- Santa Monica & Venice\nThe Venice Run Club is the heartbeat of Venice. A community of runners here to better ourselves and our community. Come run with us. \n48 for Change\nWith the combination of a global pandemic and civil unrest around racial injustice\, June of 2020 set the stage for important societal and human issues to finally come to light in a more permanent way. This was the same time that two friends\, Justin and Tyler\, decided they wanted to take action to make a difference in the injustices and inequality we see in our communities. \n  \n\n\n\nThe week of George Floyd’s passing\, Justin called Tyler voicing his frustration from Floyd’s murder and subsequent reactions\, and they joined forces to do a running challenge that very weekend that entailed running 4 miles every 4 hours for 48 hours. A GoFundMe was set up to collect funds from friends and family throughout the running challenge to donate to help support racial justice. \nWhat started as a way to take the mind off of the pressure cooker of injustice resulted in a massively successful and attention-grabbing fundraiser\, and eventually turned into a 501(c)3 nonprofit\, still strong and growing today: 48 For Change. \nAside from fundraising and donating\, Justin found that the community that gathered to run that weekend was something special\, and needed its own spotlight. A place where anyone can come and simply run with a group of good people. Venice Run Club was born. \nNearly two years later\, we have grown into a strong group of 200+ runners\, given back $100\,000 and over 1\,100lbs of clothing to the LA community\, guided over 40 runners to completing their first marathon\, and become On’s first-ever sponsored run club in America. \nCome make friends\, break a sweat\, and get to know the city in the best way possible: by running its streets. \n\n\n\n  \n\nWeekly Run Schedule\n\n\n\n\n\nTrack Tuesday- 7:30PM\n\nSanta Monica High School- 601 Pico Blvd\, Santa Monica\, CA 90405 \n\n\n\n\n\nMobbin Wednesday- 6:30pm\n\nThe Kinney Hotel- 737 Washington Blvd Venice\, CA 90292 \n\n\n\n\n\nLong Run Saturday- 8:30am\n\nThe Kinney Hotel- 737 Washington Blvd Venice\, CA 90292 \n\n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nhttps://venicerunclub.co/\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n  \n

Thanks to this crazy new bar in Winnetka\, CA and our buddy the bartender\, we were introduced to new styles of beer that were much different than the commercial brands we were used to. After many conversations on the process of making beer and the brewing techniques of smaller breweries\, we decided to take a chance at brewing our own malted\, adult beverages! We signed up for a Maltose Falcons class\, bought a brewing kit and a turkey fryer and made a batch of beer on June 23\, 2012. After this first batch\, we were hooked! We invested more time in learning about the process\, fabricated custom brewing equipment and experimented with new recipes while tweaking them to make them our own. After serving samples of our homemade brews and getting positive feedback\, we began talking of doing it legit and opening up a brewery!  Given our Valley roots and the fact our beer was brewed out of a garage in Sylmar\, CA\, we decided 818 Brewing was the perfect name and we filed our paperwork in October 2014 for our new venture. \nWhat we’ve enjoyed the most along our journey is the sense of community within the craft brew scene. Not many products can bring people together of different nationalities\, age groups\, religious beliefs\, income levels\, political views – and even fellow brewers! – And create a moment of common ground.  8 one 8 Brewing is proud to offer a product that brings us together to say cheers! \n\n\nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \neventbrite.com/e/brewery-bike-ride\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

SUMMARY:The Broad Museum- DTLA
DESCRIPTION:FREE TUE – SUN- Bunker Hill\, DTLA\nThe Broad makes its collection of contemporary art from the 1950s to the present accessible to the widest possible audience by presenting exhibitions and operating a lending program to art museums and galleries worldwide. \nBy actively building a dynamic collection that features in-depth representations of influential contemporary artists and by advancing education and engagement through exhibitions and diverse public programming\, the museum enriches\, provokes\, inspires\, and fosters appreciation of art of our time. \n \nThe Broad was founded by philanthropists Eli and Edythe Broad on Grand Avenue in downtown Los Angeles. Designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro in collaboration with Gensler\, the museum offers free general admission and presents an active program of rotating temporary exhibitions and innovative audience engagement. The Broad is home to 2\,000 works of art in the Broad collection\, which is one of the world’s leading collections of postwar and contemporary art. \n  \n \nThe Broad from Home\nThe Broad is committed to inspiring and fostering an appreciation of contemporary art through our digital initiatives. Experience #TheBroadFromHome to find inspiration through music\, poetry\, performance\, workshops\, and conversations centered around the Broad collection. \nOverview \nPerformances \nTalks & Conversations \nArtist Spotlight \nFamily Art Workshops \nMore Online Programs \n  \nThe Broad Collection\nEli and Edythe Broad have been building their collection of postwar and contemporary art over the last 50 years. With a belief that the greatest art collections are built when the art is being made\, the Broads took to collecting art of their own time. \nThe Broad is home to 2\,000 works in the Broad collection by more than 200 artists\, and is one of the world’s leading collections of postwar and contemporary art. The collection features in-depth holdings of influential contemporary artists such as Jean-Michel Basquiat\, Mark Bradford\, Jasper Johns\, Jeff Koons\, Barbara Kruger\, Yayoi Kusama\, Kerry James Marshall\, Julie Mehretu\, Takashi Murakami\, Robert Rauschenberg\, Ed Ruscha\, Cindy Sherman\, Cy Twombly\, Andy Warhol\, and more\, plus an ever-growing representation of younger artists. \n  \nView Our Collection Here\n \nIn Under the Table\, 1994\, the viewer is both in the world of imaginary giants and in the world of remembered childhood. Fusing Alice in Wonderland with the Duchampian tradition of the readymade\, Artist Robert Therrien constructs a doppelganger from an everyday object\, both displaying his visual wit and actualizing literary or imaginative fantasy in three-dimensional space. The table exudes an extraordinary aura\, compelling one to walk underneath the table and conjuring the physical memory of being under the table of one’s childhood home. Complicated and powerful\, the work offers fresh ideas of what a table\, sculpture\, and memory can mean. \n  \n  \n \nUsing the recognizable form of a balloon twisted into the shape of a dog\, Koons has frozen a moment in time\, exaggerating both scale and material. \nBalloon Dog (Blue) is literal and abstract. When standing close to it\, one’s own distorted reflection bends around smooth pert curves. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\nGeneral Admission is Free\nThe Broad requires all visitors must reserve timed tickets in advance. Some exhibitions and events carry a separate charge. \n\n\n\n\n\nHours\nMonday: Closed\nTuesday – Wednesday: 11:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.\nThursday – Friday: 11:00 a.m.-8:00 p.m.\nSaturday: 10:00 a.m.-8:00p.m.\nSunday: 10:00 a.m.-6:00p.m. \n\n\n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nwww.thebroad.org\n \n  \nFind more
