This lush 87-acre botanic garden has more than 2500 different species of plants that offer shelter to abundant wildlife and bird population. The diversities of trees include the fruit trees\, redwoods\, ginkgo’s\, and pittosporum designed with various themes. This botanical garden in Palos Verdes has plants even from Australia\, the Mediterranean\, and Southern Africa. One can find the beautiful ever-changing display of seasonal annuals from the entrance to the exit of this enormous garden. \nBut what makes this garden unique is that it is one of the world’s first botanical gardens to be developed over a sanitary landfill. The Garden is a masterpiece of creative land reclamation and environment improvement for all to share. It is a living testimonial to the fact that land reclamation not only offers a practical solution to refuse disposal problems\, but also beautifies and improves land values at the same time. \nSouth Coast Botanical Garden Map CLICK TO ENLARGE\nPopular features in the South Coast Botanical Garden\n \nBanyan Grove\nThe highlight of the Ficus collection is the grove of Moreton Bay Fig trees that cover the area with a massive tangle of roots. In the spring\, colorful Clivias brighten the understory of this shady grove. \nCalifornia Native Plants\nGrowing California native plants in the Garden offers many benefits: they use less water; they provide habitat and food for birds\, bees\, butterflies\, and other wildlife; they have colorful flower displays from spring to summer and berries and seeds into the fall and winter. There are several areas of the Garden where you can find California Native Plants in the landscape and gardens. The primary areas are the landscaping around the Greenhouse Complex\, the Mediterranean Garden\, and the El Rincon Garden at the corner of the Tram Road and the Service Yard road marked by the rustic lodge pole pergola. \n  \n \nChildren’s Garden and Children’s Discovery Garden\nOur most popular among young people\, this garden is developed around nursery rhymes with plants to match the stories. An enchanted dollhouse and bridge enhance the setting. Adjacent to the Children’s Garden is the Discovery Garden with a secret tunnel\, worm bin\, alphabet garden\, butterfly garden\, and whimsical characters. \n  \n \nThe New Rose Garden \nEvery view in the remarkable new Rose Garden (First Bloom coming April 2018) is breathtaking. Hand-crafted\, wrought iron fence-work depicts rose emblems\, rounded staircases gently welcome guests in\, rich warm wood tones envelop architectural structures\, a large fountain features an exquisite glass mosaic\, and of course\, colorful roses drip from every crevice. A grand guest entrance provides a magnificent overview of the formally planted space\, allowing guests to catch a glimpse of the beautiful asymmetrical design created by renowned landscape architect\, Deborah Richie-Bray\, who is known for her work at the Getty Villa. Undulating pathways guide gently through a labyrinth of planted beds and sculptural elements. Two cabana structures flank the central court and provide shade on a hot day. The celebration lawn houses several formal entrance paths that lead to a grand pergola with a raised plaza which will serve as a “stage” for events and ceremonies. \nThe more than 80 rose selections feature a variety of forms\, from climbers to ground covers. The choice of fragrant roses such as the David Austin English\, create a space of beauty in sight and scent. Rose cultivars have also been chosen by theme (the Flower Girl lines the potential bride’s path) and color (notice the ombré effect from peach to pink to red on the eastern side.) Some of the oldest varieties were hybridized in the 1800’s including Barrone Prevoset and Madame Plantier. These along with 20 rare cultivars were saved from the original garden. The Rose Garden has a unique planting design that will provide year-round appeal with plenty of non-rose companion plantings to ensure a lush experience. While typically rose gardens close for pruning when the main event plants have been clipped down to bare sticks\, the layered and diverse plant palette of this garden will provide delight year-round. Watch for bursts of purple jacaranda\, hot pink crape myrtle\, and powdery pink cherry blossoms up high\, and lower to the ground seek out blooming paper whites\, sage\, boxwood and succulents. \n  \n \nDesert Garden\nThe Desert Garden includes cacti\, euphorbia\, aloes\, and other succulents. The garden is an excellent exhibition of specimens from the United States\, Africa\, Mexico\, and South America. \n \nJapanese Garden/Koi Pond\nGarden maintained with a Bonsai Display by South Coast Bonsai Association. Enjoy listening to the calming sounds of water and taking in the subdued palette of evergreen shrubbery embracing the Koi Pond. The stone lanterns were crafted of Okazaki Stone over 200 years ago in a region said to be the capital of Japan’s stone craft. \nMediterranean Garden\nMediterranean refers to a unique climate consisting of mild\, cool\, rainy winters and hot\, dry summers seen in only five places in the world: coastal California\, the Mediterranean Basin\, southwest Australia\, the southwest Cape of South Africa\, and coastal Chile. California native plants are emphasized here. Mediterranean plants are environmentally friendly because they require very little supplemental water once established. Native plants have the added benefit of providing food and shelter to wildlife and pollinators. \nDisplay Greenhouse\nThe Display Greenhouse is open to the public from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm daily. Designed with the color palette in mind\, the colors range from warm to cool tones. Inside the greenhouse you will find a display of a variety of tropical plants such as: Adenium\, Anthurium\, Begonia\, Bromeliad\, Carnivorous plants\, Cordyline\, Croton\, Orchids\, Hoya\, and Passionflower vine. \nFuchsia Garden\nEstablished and maintained by the South Coast Branch of the National Fuchsia Society\, this garden contains many different species\, cultivars\, and new introductions. Overhead shade cloth filters strong sunlight to allow fuchsias and other shade-loving plants to thrive. \nGarden for the Senses\nThis garden encourages you to enjoy plants and flowers by smell\, touch\, sound\, and sight. Plants are arranged in raised beds so they can easily be touched or smelled. Individual plant labels identify which senses the plant engages. \nAnd more! \nMust Visit Place for All Nature Lovers\nThe South Coast Botanic Garden serves the community in various ways by providing a unique horticultural and wildlife habitat experience. It also represents the excellent model of land reclamation and sustainability – by promoting the usage of water-saving vegetation. More than 1\,600 roses represent centuries of horticultural history. Significant collections of species\, old garden and modern roses are arranged in theme gardens. Planted among the roses are beautiful companion plants\, so there is something blooming in every season. \n  \n\n\n\nJAPANESE GARDEN\nExplore this tranquil Japanese-style garden that blends design elements from four classic garden styles. Cross an arched bridge and walk on shaded paths along a koi-filled stream to the teahouse\, designed by architect Whitney Smith and built in 1966. The plants in this garden are all native to Asia\, and include camellias\, azaleas\, mondo grass and Japanese maples. The distinctive roof of the teahouse\, crafted from blue tiles imported from Japan\, is especially striking in the spring when nearby pink cherry and plum trees are in bloom. The garden includes a minka\, modeled after a traditional farmhouse\, which was designed by Kenneth Masao Nishimoto and built in 1969. \n\n\n\n\n\nCAMELLIA COLLECTION\nBefore the area was opened to the public as Descanso Gardens\, the land was an oak forest. In the late 1930s and 1940s\, when newspaper publisher E. Manchester Boddy was building his estate called Rancho del Descanso\, he planted thousands of camellias in the shade of the oaks to provide blossoms for the cut-flower industry. Those camellias\, and others added in later years\, continue to thrive. \nToday Descanso Gardens is home to North America’s largest camellia collection. The Camellia Collection boasts rare and familiar camellias and has been designated an International Camellia Garden of Excellence by the International Camellia Society. Camellias at Descanso bloom from early autumn to spring\, with the most dazzling floral display in winter\, from January through February. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nOAK FOREST\nExperience the giants in the Descanso landscape\, the Coast live oaks (Quercus agrifolia). These trees\, some centuries old\, are the remainder of a forest that once blanketed the region. The Coast Live Oak typifies the natural Southern California coastal landscape. These trees are flowering plants and belong to the beech family (Fagacea). There are 19 species of Quercus native to California. The Coast Live Oak is an evergreen tree oak. Its natural distribution ranges from California’s Mendocino County along the Coast Ranges down to northern Baja California. The Coast Live Oak is known as a “keystone species\,” meaning that the tree supports the existence of hundreds of other species\, including mammals\, birds\, insects\, fungi\, plants\, and even reptiles and amphibians. The Tongva people who made this region their home relied on acorns as an important food source. The importance of the Coast live oak in the interconnected web of life cannot be overstated. \n\n\n\n\n\nANCIENT FOREST\nDescanso’s newest garden is centered on a collection of cycads donated by Katia and Frederick Elsea. The collection includes more than 180 plants representing 60 varieties including several endangered species. Virtually unchanged in form since the days of the dinosaurs\, cycads provide a glimpse of the earliest types of flora on Earth. The collection is on view with other ancient plant species – including tree ferns\, ginkgo and redwoods – in the Ancient Forest\, which opened in September 2015. \n\n  \n \n\nCALIFORNIA NATIVES\nOpened in 1959\, this 8-acre garden reflects the subtle beauty of the state’s native flora. The California Natives Garden was designed by legendary nurseryman and native plant advocate Theodore Payne\, who recognized the carefree beauty of landscapes cultivated with these climate-appropriate – and frequently aromatic – plants. \nSpring and summer is the best time to see bloom\, including the sunny yellow flowers of the desert-dwelling palo verde tree\, bright orange California poppies\, deep blue ceanothus and creamy buckeye. Monkey flowers\, baby blue eyes\, fairy duster – the names of these natives are as charming as the blossoms. In late summer and fall\, the garden is mostly greens\, grays and browns as plants go dormant to survive the hot\, dry summers. \n  \n\n\n\n\nCENTER CIRCLE\nLocated just inside the garden gate\, the Center Circle garden demonstrates how lush and beautiful a water-wise garden can be. The Center Circle garden presents a new look for Los Angeles gardens – one that foregoes the traditional lawn in favor of plants that are more vibrant and lower maintenance. \n\n  \n \n\n\nOAK WOODLAND\nWith its mix of woodland\, meadow and chaparral plants\, the Oak Woodland recreates the heritage landscape of the Los Angeles Basin – a plant community that included grasses\, perennials\, shrubs and\, of course\, oaks. \n\n\n\n\n\nNATURE’S TABLE\nAn edible garden planted with fruit trees and seasonal vegetables along with herbs\, edible flowers and other tasty accoutrements. The area is enveloped with vines\, bushes\, shrubs and greenery. Like the home garden\, the bounty varies from season to season\, including citrus\, pomegranates\, pumpkins and squash\, herbs\, greens\, amaranth\, corn — even apples! \nThe design of Nature’s Table came with help from students enrolled at Cal Poly Pomona’s Landscape Architecture Design Studio who used the idea and space as a “real world” class project. Paths meander past planting beds filled with bright green produce. The park contains an ecological preserve and is famous for its outstanding tide pools. \nIt is worth checking tide charts to visit these beaches at low tide for the tide pools and the tunnels. \nDAILY TIDE CHARTS HERE\n  \n \nOut at the end and right at the base of the points there are amazing rock tunnels where waves rush in and crash through. \n  \nTrails meander on the bluff out to excellent views from two prominent points. Below these points are three separate coves with beaches and tide pools. \nAbalone Cove Park features 2 beaches (Abalone Cove and Sacred Cove)\, tide pools\, bluff top viewing areas and trails crisscrossing the area. The park contains a State Ecological Preserve and taking of protected animals and marine life is prohibited. There is direct access to a parking lot off Palos Verdes Drive South. Access to Abalone Cove Beach is by a long trail from the parking lot. To access Sacred Cove\, users must walk along Palos Verdes Drive South to 1 of 2 trails between Portuguese and Inspiration Points. Lifeguards are on duty at Abalone Cove Beach during summer hours and weekends only. The views of the ocean and Catalina Island are spectacular. Barbeques and fires are prohibited at this site. DESCRIPTION:OPEN DAILY- Manhattan Beach Pier\nThe Roundhouse Aquarium is located at the end of the Manhattan Beach Pier. The Roundhouse has undergone a recent revitalization through a $4 million capital project spearheaded by the Harrison Greenberg Foundation. The new Roundhouse Aquarium educates and inspires more than 300\,000 visitors every year. It is managed and operated by the nonprofit oceanic and environmental organization Oceanographic Teaching Stations\, Inc. (OTS)\, whose mission is to connect and engage visitors and students to the oceans through hands-on interactive experiences with marine life and habitats of southern California\, and to inspire them to become good stewards of our environment. \nOTS’ programs at the Roundhouse Aquarium promote the study of the oceans\, tidelands and beaches of Southern California through a wide slate of science-based and standards-aligned education programs with its immersive and engaging exhibits of a diverse array of marine life.  More than 100 marine animals from Southern California’s waters live at the aquarium\, many are native to its local waters in the Santa Monica Bay. Notable wildlife include moon jellies\, sharks\, octopus\, sheepshead\, moray eels\, lobsters\, and more – as well as a touch tank with sea stars\, sea cucumbers\, sea urchins and sea snails. The aquarium prides itself on being family oriented. It’s a great place for kids to take their parents! \n\n\n\n\n\nCome SEA our Marine Exhibits\nGet to know the habitats within Southern California by visiting our diverse marine exhibits. These exhibits are showcased within 4 Aquarium Galleries. \n\n\nMarine Habitat Gallery\n\nRocky Reef Tank \nThe Rocky Reef shows us what reefs in the cold California waters look like. They are similar to coral reefs but are made up of rocks instead of corals. They are just as important of a habitat as coral reefs and often serve as a nursery for many types of juvenile fish. \nKelp Forest Tank \nThe Kelp Forest tank represents a distinct southern California marine habitat. This tank shows us what it looks like to swim at the edge of the kelp forest\, where rocks become scarcer and sand more plentiful. Many of the animals in the tank can live their life deep within the kelp forest or at the very edge. Those animals at the edges can even camouflage in the sand. \n\n\n\n\nEducation Gallery\n\nDeep Kelp Forest Tank\nThese tanks represent a very diverse and abundant habitat\, the kelp forest! The giant kelp that grows 2 feet a day\, provides food and shelter for many different animals. Not only is this habitat important for animals\, but it is also important to humans as well! Seaweeds\, like kelp\, produce about 70% of our oxygen through photosynthesis. So\, take a deep breath and thank kelp! \nTide Pool Tank\nAll the animals that you can find in our touch tank live in a habitat called a tide pool. When the tide is low and the water has receded\, pools of water are left in between rocks which form the tide pools. In Southern California\, we have 2 high tides and 2 low tides every day\, which means the animals’ habitat is always changing. They must have special adaptations that allow them to live in such a dynamic habitat. \nPier Piling Tank\nHave you ever wondered what is under the pier? This tank will give you a good idea! Pier pilings\, while man made\, do create a habitat for lots of animals ranging from mussels\, to crabs\, to fish and rays. The fish can either hide amongst the mussels or lay on the sand under the pier among the rays. \n\n\n\n \n\n\nMarine Science Gallery\n\nJewel Tank\nSee our animals in the spotlight with cool adaptive traits like our spotted rose anemone that has biofluorescence and our baby swell shark eggs that can camouflage as seaweed. The baby swell sharks are really cute when they hatch out too! \nPipefish Tank\nThe Pipefish tank is an example of a mudflat with eelgrass beds that act as a nursery for young fish and young sting rays. See if you can spot a pipefish in the eelgrass. \nArtificial Reef Tank\nThe Artificial Reef tank is an examples of man-made structures left behind that now act as reefs teaming with life from sea anemones on rock scallops to sea stars to juvenile rockfish. Can you see the bright orange Garibaldi with blue spots? \nOctopus Tank\nThe octopus tank is an example of a deep water habitat brought to life for our guests to see. It features anemones and rock scallops on the reef which also add structure and microhabitats to the reef. The decorator crab uses the colonial strawberry anemones to help decorate its body to camouflage with the reef. There are small but colorful rockfish like the half-banded rockfish that stay close to the rocks and use them as shelter. \nKid’s Kelp Corner\nHave you ever wondered oh why\, oh why did my goldfish die? Come find the answer in the Kid’s Kelp Corner. You can also relax and read the many ocean related books in our library while watching our inquisitive freshwater fish. \nDiscovery Center\nCome check out what it means to be a scientist! Observe plankton\, learn about the food chain\, and discover some of the aquarium’s smallest residents. \nSeahorse Tank\nSeahorses are some of the most fragile sea creatures in the ocean\, and they can camouflage to look like seaweed\, eelgrass\, or even sea fans. They use their tails to hold onto eelgrass and stay upright\, but they won’t swim except in short bursts. The Forest Lawn Museum first opened in 1952 and is located adjacent to the Hall of Crucifixion-Resurrection at Forest Lawn – Glendale.  Forest Lawn’s founder\, Dr. Hubert Eaton\, wrote in his Builder’s Creed that our park should be “a place where artists study and sketch; where school teachers bring happy children to see the things they read of in books.” In that spirit\, the Forest Lawn Museum displays a permanent collection\, as well as world-class rotating exhibits. After all\, the museum was originally designed to house his fine collection of old-master paintings and drawings\, as well as works on paper by Honoré Daumier and his 19th-century contemporaries. \n\n\n\n\n\nBut in the ensuing decades\, as the art world has continued to evolve\, so has Los Angeles — and so has the Hammer Museum\, which is now a part of the UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture. In 1994\, UCLA assumed management and operations of the museum\, and the Hammer kept its original purpose but also expanded its mission. Today\, the Hammer has a wide reputation for innovation and for showcasing new artists. \n  \n\nNew Contemporary Gallery\n\n  \n“L.A. has become a hotbed of contemporary art and artists\,” says Ann Philbin\, the museum’s director since 1999\, “and the Hammer has become a premier institution where they are shown.” \n  \n\n\n4th-Floor-Offices\n\n  \nUnder Philbin’s leadership\, the museum has expanded its collections and programs\, including establishing the Hammer Projects series of exhibitions and installations featuring local\, national and international emerging artists. It also launched the Made in L.A. biennial\, now in its fourth edition. Through these and other innovations\, the Hammer has quadrupled its attendance to about 250\,000 a year. \n  \nLindbrook Terrace\n  \nMeanwhile\, Occidental Petroleum\, which occupied the adjoining building\, relocated to Houston\, Texas. So the Hammer has begun a major\, multiyear expansion that will take the museum far into the 21st century. \nEarlier this year\, the Hammer announced a $180 million capital campaign. Almost half of those funds will be used to expand gallery and other public spaces\, while the rest will go toward exhibitions\, programming and an endowment. The museum has already raised more than $130 million\, including $30 million from L.A. philanthropists Lynda and Stewart ’59\, J.D. ’62 Resnick and $20 million from Hammer board chair Marcy Carsey. \n  \n  \nAnnex\n  \nThe renovations and additions being designed by Michael Maltzan Architecture\, who was commissioned in 2000 to create the museum’s 2003 master plan\, include: \n• A newly designed entrance at Wilshire and Westwood boulevards to maximize the museum’s visual presence at one of the nation’s busiest intersections. In the coming years\, the museum will also benefit from a planned Metro Purple Line station across Wilshire. \n• More than 10\,000 square feet of additional exhibition space for contemporary art. \n• New permanent collection galleries and a study room for the Grunwald Center Collection. \n• 20\,000 square feet of enhanced public spaces\, including a new restaurant. \n• A new and more accessible Hammer Store. \n  \n  \n2nd Floor B Side\n  \nIn all\, the expansion will provide 60 percent more gallery space for exhibitions. The museum will remain open during construction\, and admission will continue to be free. “We’re accessible to everyone\, and that keeps people coming back\,” Philbin says. “L.A. has been growing as one of the world’s most exciting cultural creative communities\, and the museum has grown alongside it.” \n  \n\n  \nBookstore\nHISTORY OF THE HAMMER MUSEUM\nThe Hammer Museum opened to the public in November 1990. Founded by Dr. Armand Hammer\, former Chairman of Occidental Petroleum Corporation\, the Museum was designed by architect Edward Larrabee Barnes. Financed by Occidental\, the Museum was built adjacent to the Corporation’s international headquarters in Westwood. At that time\, the Museum featured galleries for Dr. Hammer’s collections — old master paintings and drawings\, and a collection of works on paper by Honore Daumier and his contemporaries — as well as galleries for traveling exhibitions. Dr. Hammer passed away in December 1990\, three weeks after the opening of the Museum leaving many spaces unfinished. \nIn 1992\, the Museum began negotiations with its neighbor\, University of California\, Los Angeles (UCLA)\, to assume the management and operations of the institution. In April 1994\, the partnership with UCLA was finalized and the following year the University relocated its collections and the staff of the Wight Art Gallery and the Grunwald Center for the Graphic Arts to the Hammer. The Museum also assumed responsibility for the Franklin D. Murphy Sculpture Garden\, located at the north end of the UCLA campus. \nHenry Hopkins\, then director of the Wight gallery and professor in the Department of Art\, became director of the Museum until his retirement in 1998. In 1999 Ann Philbin was named director and has developed a strong and original institutional identity and built a national and international reputation for thematic contemporary exhibitions\, scholarly historical exhibitions\, and contemporary artists’ projects. During her tenure the Hammer has formed a Hammer Contemporary Collection which now holds over 2\,000 artworks. In addition\, Philbin has overseen substantial renovations to the museum’s building\, including the completion of the 300-seat Billy Wilder Theater and museum café. With Philbin’s direction\, the museum instituted the internationally acclaimed Hammer Projects\, a series of more than one hundred contemporary exhibitions and installations featuring local\, national\, and international emerging artists. The California African American Museum’s mission is to research\, collect\, preserve\, and interpret for public enrichment the history\, art\, and culture of African Americans with an emphasis on California and the western United States. \n \nCalifornia African American Museum (CAAM) Temporarily Closed For Repair\n  \nCAAM’s permanent collection consists of over 4\,000 objects ranging from the 1800s to the present. It encompasses paintings\, photographs\, film\, sculpture\, historical documents\, and artifacts\, and it spans nineteenth-century landscape paintings to modern artworks to contemporary mixed-media reflections on cultural and political events. \n \n  \nThe Museum’s first acquisitions included a bronze bust of civil rights activist Dr. Mary Mcleod Bethune by artist Richmond Barthé and a sculpture by artist Maren Hassinger\, then at the start of her career. These laid the perfect groundwork for CAAM’s mandate to assemble a comprehensive\, thoughtful\, and wide-reaching collection. \n \n  \nCAAM’s deepest holdings include art made or connected to African Americans in California and the western United States. However\, the Museum also has significant works of contemporary art from the African diaspora (including Haiti\, Brazil\, and Jamaica)\, as well as traditional African art from Western\, Central\, and Sub-Saharan Africa. By showcasing the history of social movements from the perspective of marginalized groups\, the Museum inspires visitors to engage with social justice principles and advocate for change.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Museum carries on in the tradition of the founder’s commitment to social justice issues such as ministry to the poor\, abolition\, women’s suffrage\, and civil rights.  A permanent exhibition detailing the Methodist’s long history of championing social justice causes for the less fortunate.  The exhibition features dynamic and rarely seen images from the Museum archives\, documenting Los Angeles Methodist’s progressive social work and ethnic outreach endeavors during the long period of Los Angeles’ growth.  In conjunction with the permanent exhibition\, and moving beyond Methodist activities\, the Museum will install temporary exhibitions examining past and present social justice activities culled from a wide variety of amazingly rich and diverse ethnic\, religious\, and racial communities in the city of Los Angeles and beyond.\n​\nThe museum is housed in the historic La Plaza United Methodist Church at the intersection of the Los Angeles Plaza and famous Olvera Street.  Thanks to its proximity to some of the finest educational institutions the world has to offer\, such as California State University\, Los Angeles (CSULA)\, University of California\, Los Angeles (UCLA)\, Otis College of Art and Design\, and California State University\, Northridge (CSUN) the Museum has developed a diverse set of educational and social outreach programs to bring opportunities to the community.  These programs continue La Plaza United Methodist Church’s 100 year-old legacy of bringing socio-economic and health related equality to all citizens of Los Angeles\, through non-sectarian outreach services\, knowledge\, and empowerment.\n\n\nFounded in 2012\, the Los Angeles United Methodist Museum of Social Justice tells the untold story of the founding of Los Angeles. The museum and educational center is housed in the historic La Plaza United Methodist Church at the intersection of Los Angeles Plaza and Olvera Street. \nThe Museum hosts a diverse set of educational and social outreach programs in partnership with California State University\, Los Angeles (CSULA)\, University of California\, Los Angeles (UCLA)\, Otis College of Art and Design\, and California State University\, Northridge (CSUN) These programs continue La Plaza United Methodist Church’s 100 year-old legacy of bringing socio-economic and health related equality to all citizens of Los Angeles\, through non-sectarian outreach services\, knowledge\, and empowerment. \n \nThe inaugural exhibit “Angels on the Plaza\,” opened in September 2013 with original images from the La Plaza collection that document the living conditions of the immigrant population in and around the Plaza from 1910-1927. In September\, 2014; “Exodus\,” a photographic exhibition of the work of Julian Cardona documented the forced modern-day exodus of people from Mexico to the US. \nLa Plaza  The current home of La Plaza United Methodist Church was built in 1926. When the state of California declared the La Plaza area a historic monument\, the Cal-Pac United Methodist Conference was forced to give up the church and the adjoining conference center through threat of eminent domain. The Conference moved its offices to Pasadena\, but the church remained\, with a 50 year lease at a $1 per year. \nThe Urban Foundation’s role  In the 1990‘s\, the city of Los Angeles took over the historic El Pueblo monument from the state\, and negotiations for a new church lease in 2002 were unsuccessful. In 2010\, the “La Plaza initiative\,” a program of the Urban Foundation and the United Methodist Cal-Pac Conference\, was founded and charged with negotiating a new lease. When the City of Los Angeles resisted negotiating in good faith\, the La Plaza congregation\, under the direction of founding museum director\, Leonora Barron\, led a series of protests and prayer services on the steps of City hall. After a year long struggle\, a fair agreement was reached.
