DESCRIPTION:Barbara Kruger\, Untitled (Questions)- DTLA\n\n  \n\n\nMOCA has reinstalled the monumental wall work by Los Angeles–based artist Barbara Kruger (b. New York 1945)\, Untitled (Questions) (1990/2018). The emblematic red\, white\, and blue artwork was originally commissioned by MOCA in 1989 for the exhibition A Forest of Signs: Art in the Crisis of Representation\, and was last installed in 1990 on the south wall of MOCA’s building (now The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA). The work holds an iconic place in the collective memory of Los Angeles’s art community and is considered one of the museum’s curatorial highlights over its forty-year history. \n\nThis iteration is installed on the north facade of The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA\, facing Temple Street and measuring 30 by 191 feet. Asking nine questions including “Who is beyond the law?\,” “Who is bought and sold?\,” and “Who is free to choose?\,” the work points to issues of patriotism\, civic engagement\, and power relations. In connection with the work\, MOCA led a series of voter registration efforts during the 2018 midterms\, and will continue these efforts in advance of the 2020 general election. \n\nThis project was initiated by MOCA Director Klaus Biesenbach and is organized by MOCA Senior Curator Bennett Simpson. \nThis installation of Barbara Kruger’s Untitled (Questions) is generously supported by an anonymous donor. \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\nONE MUSEUM. The land art movement first appeared in the late 1960s and served to challenge the location\, material\, size\, and temporal existence of a work of art. Double Negative consists of two long straight trenches\, 30 feet wide and 50 feet deep\, cut into the “tabletop” of Mormon Mesa\, displacing 240\,000 tons of desert sandstone. SUMMARY:The Hollywood Cross
DESCRIPTION:The Hollywood Cross\, is better known by it’s official name as the Hollywood Pilgrimage Memorial Monument. And if you’ve ever driven on the 101 freeway through Hollywood\, then you’ve probably have noticed the giant\, illuminated cross on top of a hill just to the north of the Cahuenga exit. \n \nThe Hollywood Cross is a memorial to Christine Stevenson\, a founding member of the Theatre Arts Alliance\, the group who built the Hollywood Bowl. The Alliance began producing plays exclusively with religious themes\, but some members wanted to branch out with some productions of a more secular nature. \n  \n \nMs. Stevenson had no interest in secular productions and in 1920 she built the Pilgrimage Theatre\, named after her new production\, the Pilgrimage Play. \nWhen Stevenson died in 1922\, the Pilgrimage continued to put on the Pilgrimage Play until 1964 when a lawsuit brought the play’s run to its end. This legal action stemmed from concerns about the separation of church and state that came about in 1941\, after the County of Los Angeles was deeded the theatre and the land it was on. \nIn 1976\, The Pilgrimage was renamed John Anson Ford Amphitheater in honor of the former L.A. County Supervisor and today it’s known simply as The Ford. \n  \n \nThe Many Iterations of the Hollywood Cross\nIn 1923\, in honor of Ms. Stevenson\, a giant wooden cross was placed on the hilltop above the Pilgrimage Theater. It was lit up in the evening when her play was being performed in the amphitheater below. \nIn 1993 the current monument — a 32-foot tall memorial of steel and opaque plastic — was put in place and dubbed the Hollywood Pilgrimage Memorial Monument. Two years later\, it was named the Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument #617. \n\nHow to get to the Hollywood Cross\nTo visit the Cross from the Ford Theatre\, walk south along Cahuenga Boulevard East. Right before the intersection with Cahuenga Terrace\, on top of a retaining wall\, you’ll see a narrow trail leading up the hill. This isn’t the most obvious of trails\, so you’ll have to look closely. \nThe hike is short\, but the trail is quite steep. The path isn’t well marked or well groomed\, so come prepared with proper shoes. The hike is challenging\, but eventually you will come to the  top of the hill at the base of the Hollywood Cross. From the top of the hill the views are spectacular. \n  \n\nWhere to Park When Hiking to the Hollywood Cross\nThere’s no parking along Cahuenga Boulevard. Find parking on Cahuenga Terrace\, a small side street just to the south of the cross. In 2021\, Diwali falls on Thursday\, Nov. 4. \nHow is Diwali celebrated?\nThe Diwali festival takes place over five days. \nThe First Day\, \nDhanteras\, is for celebrating Lakshmi\, the Hindu goddess of wealth\, prosperity\, youth and beauty. On this first day\, people buy new items such as jewelry\, clothing and utensils and light lamps to welcome Lakshm. \nThe Second Day\, \nknown as Chhoti Diwali\, Naraka Chaturdasior Kali Chaudas\, focuses on a story from Hindu mythology about the god Krishna and his defeat of the demon god Narakasura. On this day\, some people put up twinkling lights to celebrate his victory. \nThe Third Day\,\nknown as Diwali\, Deepawali\, or Lakshmi Puja\, is the most important day of the Diwali festival. On this day\, people visit family and friends to feast and exchange sweets and gifts. People also continue to light lamps and candles to welcome light and prosperity from the goddess Lakshmi. \nThe Fourth Day\,\nknown as Govardhan Puja or Padva\, some people in northern India build small piles of cow dung as a symbol of how Krishna defeated the king of the Hindu gods\, Indra\, by lifting up a mountain. \nThe First Day\,\nknown as Bhai Dooj or Yama Dwitiva\, is a day for brothers and sisters to honor one another. Siblings perform a ceremony called tilak and pray for one another. \nOn this final day of Diwali\, many people also set off fireworks. In 2017\, India’s supreme court banned the sale of fireworks for Diwali in the capital\, Delhi\, citing concerns about pollution and air quality. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWho celebrates Diwali?\nDiwali is celebrated by people across different faiths in India\, including Hindus\, Jains\, Sikhs\, and some Muslims and Buddhists. The village is one of the most prominent Black cultural spaces in Los Angeles\, and it is a symbol of Black life in this city. \n  \n \n\n\nEverySunday from 3:00pm until dusk the African beats of the drums can be heard throughout the neighborhood. Drummers of all ages and skill levels are welcome to participate in this exciting community event. Leimert Park has been a meeting place for the people of Los Angeles for at least since the early 80s. \nThe drum circles feature musical styles from across the African continent\, with local drummers join with others coming from various parts of Africa\, Latin America\, the Caribbean islands. ANYWHERE that has a good west facing view of the SoCalifornia sky.\n \n  \n  \nFuture Vandenberg AFB Rocket Launches will include the following rockets\n \nFalcon 9\nFalcon 9 is a two-stage rocket designed and manufactured by SpaceX for the reliable and safe transport of satellites and the Dragon spacecraft into orbit. The Block 5 variant is the fifth major interval aimed at improving upon the ability for rapid reusability. \nSpace Exploration Technologies Corp.\, known as SpaceX\, is an American aerospace manufacturer and space transport services company headquartered in Hawthorne\, California. It was founded in 2002 by entrepreneur Elon Musk with the goal of reducing space transportation costs and enabling the colonization of Mars. SpaceX has many pads\, on the East Coast of the US they own SLC-40 at Cape Canaveral and LC-39A at the Kennedy Space Center for their lower inclination launches. They also own SLC-4E at Vandenberg\, California for their high inclination launches. Another site is also being developed at Boca Chica\, Texas. \n  \n  \n \nAtlas V 401\nAn Atlas V with a 4 meter diameter fairing\, no boosters and a single centaur upper stage engine. \nUnited Launch Alliance (ULA) is a joint venture of Lockheed Martin Space Systems and Boeing Defense\, Space & Security. ULA was formed in December 2006 by combining the teams at these companies which provide spacecraft launch services to the government of the United States. ULA launches from both coasts of the US. They launch their Atlas V vehicle from LC-41 in Cape Canaveral and LC-3E at Vandeberg.
