Khadem will present songs from her latest album Remembrance with a hybrid ensemble under the musical direction of cellist and composer Chris Votek combining the Western string quartet with traditional Persian instruments. \nROCKY DAWUNI – July 28\n \nMusician and activist Rocky Dawuni—who calls both Los Angeles and Ghana home—has become a local favorite for his infectious\, feel-good reggae tunes and globe-spanning “Afro roots” sound. \nDawuni has shared stages with artists including Stevie Wonder\, Peter Gabriel\, and John Legend\, and received a 2022 Grammy nomination for Best Global Music Album. Through his music and advocacy\, he fights for climate justice\, champions social causes\, and unites generations and cultures. \nNEFESH MOUNTAIN – August 4\n \nThrough klezmer melodies and Hebrew refrains\, the boundary-pushing bluegrass Americana band Nefesh Mountain shares the beauty of Jewish culture with the world. \nTheir most recent album\, Songs for the Sparrows\, was inspired by a life-changing trip to Poland and Ukraine\, where band leaders Doni Zasloff and Eric Lindberg’s families emigrated from. Exploring a range of experiences from an Eastern European Jewish perspective\, Nefesh Mountain uses music to tell stories of humanity with what has been called “old soul wisdom.” \nBOOKER T. JONES – August 11\n \nGroundbreaking soul and R&B artist Booker T. Jones occupy an important place in the history of American music. At age seventeen\, he fronted the seminal Memphis soul band Booker T. and the M.G.’s—a rare integrated group of musicians that served as the house band for Stax Records\, working with the likes of Otis Redding\, Bill Withers\, and Wilson Pickett. DESCRIPTION:ON EXHIBIT – Santa Monica\nVisit California Heritage Museum as they exhibit 53 paintings by outstanding artists who were members of the California Water Color Society during its first fifty years! The exhibit will run from July 9 – October 30. \n \nCALIFORNIA WATERCOLOR SOCIETY THE FIRST 50 YEARS (1921-1971)\n\nOne hundred years ago a small group of Southern California artists formed the California Water Color Society and held their first exhibition at the Los Angeles Museum of History\, Science and Art. (The spelling at the time was “Water Color”. – two words – Which was common usage in the 1920s.) The founding members were all established\, professional artists. Artists in the exhibition include Marion Kavanaugh Wachtel\, Phil Dike\, Millard Sheets\, Phil Paradise\, Emil Kosa Jr.\, Edward Reep\, Ralph Hulett\, Wayne La Com\, Milford Zornes\, and Rex Brandt among others. Their stated goal in forming the CWCS was to elevate the watercolor medium “to the dignity it enjoyed under such great cultures as those of China and Persia”. \nFREE ADMISSION EVERY FRIDAY\nDuring the first 50 years this organization was in operation\, it was known as the California Water Color Society. After 1971 when larger numbers of artists from other parts of America joined the CWCS\, the board and members chose to change the society’s name to the National Watercolor Society. That name is used to this day to identify society. \nThis exhibition has been mounted to present select watercolors by outstanding artists who were members between 1921 and 1971 when the organization was known as the California Water Color Society. Many of the artists were either on the Board of Directors or served as jurors for society exhibitions during that fifty-year period of time. \n \nThe goal of this exhibition is to visually confirm the CWCS artists from that fifty-year period of time indeed succeeded in establishing Southern California as a center for the advancement of the watercolor medium; just as the founding members had hoped for when they formed the organization in 1921. This exhibition was curated by Gordon T. McClelland for the Hilbert Museum of California Art at Chapman University\, the originating exhibition site. \n\n \n2612 Main Street\, Santa Monica CA 90405 \nCALIFORNIA HERITAGE MUSEUM\nThe building that houses the California Heritage Museum is the Roy Jones House and is as interesting and unique as the exhibits themselves. \n \nIn the late 19th Century\, renowned architect Sumner P. Hunt built the home for Roy Jones\, son of the founder of Santa Monica Senator\, John Percival Jones. City Trustees granted Jones a permit to dig a cesspool on April 16\, 1894\, marking the first step taken in the construction of the house. One of Sumner P. Hunt’s earliest surviving buildings\, the Roy Jones home is designed in a style that transitions between the elaborate Victorian Queen Anne Revival to the more simple American Colonial or Georgian Revival. \n   \nThe beauty and grace of the first buildings were documented in the 1894 May publication of ‘Outlook’: “Five new residences\, ranging in cost from $3\,000 to $5\,000\, are now in the course of construction in Santa Monica. Those of Messrs. Roy Jones and Kennelly\, on Ocean Avenue\, is about completed. They are all handsome structures\, and show that there is to be no deterioration in architectural styles in our growing city by the sea.” The June 30\, 1894 edition further reinforced this appreciation: “Sumner P. Hunt\, architect\, of Los Angeles\, had made his ‘imprint’ upon this town in a pleasant way that is not excelled by anyone who has ever ‘struck’ it. He designed the residence of Mr. Roy Jones. Kusama’s Infinity Mirrored Room—The Souls of Millions of Light Years Away (2013) is now open with reservations required in advance. Kusama’s Longing for Eternity (2017) is on view on the third floor and doesn’t require reservations. DESCRIPTION:EVERY FRIDAY – Los Angeles\nGet a start with your weekend with some laughter! Clubhouse Fridays Improv Show features some of LA’s best improvisers! Creating scenes inspired by suggestions from you\, the audience. Showtime is 7:15 pm and is free with an optional donation at the end of the night. The location is The Clubhouse Theater which is a small location literally right beside Jon’s Grocery store entrance on Vermont Ave. You’ll see some comedy posters on the windows out front. \n \nAugust 12th’s show will feature improv teams The Funnies\, Dearly Beloved\, and a superstar team of greats including Peter Banifaz\, Will Hines\, and Jim Woods. \nThere is free parking all over the shopping center lot including in front of the theater. You’ll probably see lots of people standing right outside the doors of the theater. \n\n \n1607 North Vermont Avenue\, Los Angeles\, CA 90027 \n \nThe Clubhouse is your home base for indie improv shows and classes\, sketch\, and a place for the comm. It is an independently owned and operated comedy theatre in the Los Feliz area of Los Angeles. There are classes and shows 7 days a week\, 365 days a year. \nEvery show at the Clubhouse is run by the people who perform there and is offered free of charge. The entire theatre is paid for by the donations that are taken at each show. If you do not have cash on hand\, most teams offer their Venmo or Paypal info. The Clubhouse is also the only theatre in town that offers ample free parking on site for everyone both onstage and in the audience. There are plenty of options for new and seasoned improvisers\, comics\, and writers to get stage time. \n \nUnlike many other theaters in Los Angeles\, the Clubhouse has no house teams\, has no specific form or curriculum\, and is open to everybody. Visit our submissions page to find a show to submit to\, or just stop by for one of our nightly improv jams. Whether improv\, sketch\, stand up or a variety act\, everyone can find a show to participate in. You can also walk in any night of the week and check out any show in either of our two theaters. Because the Clubhouse has no employees\, and everyone who participates in the community does so on a volunteer basis\, it is up to everyone who uses the Clubhouse to maintain it. Please respect the space\, it is only as good as we keep it. The Clubhouse is run by the community for the community. \nThe Clubhouse is an inclusive community-run donation-based comedy venue available to all. What follows is both an homage—Larry Clark dedicates the film to “Hebert Baker and other Black Musicians known and unknown”—and a setting straight through the story of Womack (Nathaniel Taylor)\, a saxophonist who returns home from a prison stint to reconnect with his mentor and grandfather\, a legendary musician and pick up the pieces of his life. Sent up for defending a fellow Black musician from white gangsters who control the music industry through violence\, Womack again finds himself fighting for the right to create on his own terms. With an astonishing score composed by Horace Tapscott and performed by The Pan Afrikan People’s Arkestra\, Passing Through celebrates—and\, indeed\, embodies—Black artistry while exposing the racist historical forces aligned to exploit it. \n35mm\, color\, 111 min.
