DESCRIPTION:OPEN DAILY- Manhattan Beach Pier\nThe Roundhouse Aquarium is located at the end of the Manhattan Beach Pier. The Roundhouse has undergone a recent revitalization through a $4 million capital project spearheaded by the Harrison Greenberg Foundation. The new Roundhouse Aquarium educates and inspires more than 300\,000 visitors every year. It is managed and operated by the nonprofit oceanic and environmental organization Oceanographic Teaching Stations\, Inc. (OTS)\, whose mission is to connect and engage visitors and students to the oceans through hands-on interactive experiences with marine life and habitats of southern California\, and to inspire them to become good stewards of our environment. \nOTS’ programs at the Roundhouse Aquarium promote the study of the oceans\, tidelands and beaches of Southern California through a wide slate of science-based and standards-aligned education programs with its immersive and engaging exhibits of a diverse array of marine life.  More than 100 marine animals from Southern California’s waters live at the aquarium\, many are native to its local waters in the Santa Monica Bay. Notable wildlife include moon jellies\, sharks\, octopus\, sheepshead\, moray eels\, lobsters\, and more – as well as a touch tank with sea stars\, sea cucumbers\, sea urchins and sea snails. The aquarium prides itself on being family oriented. It’s a great place for kids to take their parents! \n\n\n\n\n\nCome SEA our Marine Exhibits\nGet to know the habitats within Southern California by visiting our diverse marine exhibits. These exhibits are showcased within 4 Aquarium Galleries. \n\n\nMarine Habitat Gallery\n\nRocky Reef Tank \nThe Rocky Reef shows us what reefs in the cold California waters look like. They are similar to coral reefs but are made up of rocks instead of corals. They are just as important of a habitat as coral reefs and often serve as a nursery for many types of juvenile fish. \nKelp Forest Tank \nThe Kelp Forest tank represents a distinct southern California marine habitat. This tank shows us what it looks like to swim at the edge of the kelp forest\, where rocks become scarcer and sand more plentiful. Many of the animals in the tank can live their life deep within the kelp forest or at the very edge. Those animals at the edges can even camouflage in the sand. \n\n\n\n\nEducation Gallery\n\nDeep Kelp Forest Tank\nThese tanks represent a very diverse and abundant habitat\, the kelp forest! The giant kelp that grows 2 feet a day\, provides food and shelter for many different animals. Not only is this habitat important for animals\, but it is also important to humans as well! Seaweeds\, like kelp\, produce about 70% of our oxygen through photosynthesis. So\, take a deep breath and thank kelp! \nTide Pool Tank\nAll the animals that you can find in our touch tank live in a habitat called a tide pool. When the tide is low and the water has receded\, pools of water are left in between rocks which form the tide pools. In Southern California\, we have 2 high tides and 2 low tides every day\, which means the animals’ habitat is always changing. They must have special adaptations that allow them to live in such a dynamic habitat. \nPier Piling Tank\nHave you ever wondered what is under the pier? This tank will give you a good idea! Pier pilings\, while man made\, do create a habitat for lots of animals ranging from mussels\, to crabs\, to fish and rays. The fish can either hide amongst the mussels or lay on the sand under the pier among the rays. \n\n\n\n \n\n\nMarine Science Gallery\n\nJewel Tank\nSee our animals in the spotlight with cool adaptive traits like our spotted rose anemone that has biofluorescence and our baby swell shark eggs that can camouflage as seaweed. The baby swell sharks are really cute when they hatch out too! \nPipefish Tank\nThe Pipefish tank is an example of a mudflat with eelgrass beds that act as a nursery for young fish and young sting rays. See if you can spot a pipefish in the eelgrass. \nArtificial Reef Tank\nThe Artificial Reef tank is an examples of man-made structures left behind that now act as reefs teaming with life from sea anemones on rock scallops to sea stars to juvenile rockfish. Can you see the bright orange Garibaldi with blue spots? \nOctopus Tank\nThe octopus tank is an example of a deep water habitat brought to life for our guests to see. It features anemones and rock scallops on the reef which also add structure and microhabitats to the reef. The decorator crab uses the colonial strawberry anemones to help decorate its body to camouflage with the reef. There are small but colorful rockfish like the half-banded rockfish that stay close to the rocks and use them as shelter. \nKid’s Kelp Corner\nHave you ever wondered oh why\, oh why did my goldfish die? Come find the answer in the Kid’s Kelp Corner. You can also relax and read the many ocean related books in our library while watching our inquisitive freshwater fish. \nDiscovery Center\nCome check out what it means to be a scientist! Observe plankton\, learn about the food chain\, and discover some of the aquarium’s smallest residents. \nSeahorse Tank\nSeahorses are some of the most fragile sea creatures in the ocean\, and they can camouflage to look like seaweed\, eelgrass\, or even sea fans. They use their tails to hold onto eelgrass and stay upright\, but they won’t swim except in short bursts. DESCRIPTION:EVERY WEEK\, EVERY RUN\, EVERY BODY- Santa Monica & Venice\nThe Venice Run Club is the heartbeat of Venice. A community of runners here to better ourselves and our community. Come run with us. \n48 for Change\nWith the combination of a global pandemic and civil unrest around racial injustice\, June of 2020 set the stage for important societal and human issues to finally come to light in a more permanent way. This was the same time that two friends\, Justin and Tyler\, decided they wanted to take action to make a difference in the injustices and inequality we see in our communities. \n  \n\n\n\nThe week of George Floyd’s passing\, Justin called Tyler voicing his frustration from Floyd’s murder and subsequent reactions\, and they joined forces to do a running challenge that very weekend that entailed running 4 miles every 4 hours for 48 hours. A GoFundMe was set up to collect funds from friends and family throughout the running challenge to donate to help support racial justice. \nWhat started as a way to take the mind off of the pressure cooker of injustice resulted in a massively successful and attention-grabbing fundraiser\, and eventually turned into a 501(c)3 nonprofit\, still strong and growing today: 48 For Change. \nAside from fundraising and donating\, Justin found that the community that gathered to run that weekend was something special\, and needed its own spotlight. A place where anyone can come and simply run with a group of good people. We just require a one drink minimum to sing.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTuesday– The Oaks Acoustic and Open Mic Singer/ Songwriter\n\n \nTo get booked for a set 7:30-8:30pm shoot Joey a message on IG @bluemusicj \nAfter OA Tuesdays we have… karaoke  10pm-1:45am \n  \nKARAOKE IS BACK EVERY NIGHT OF THE WEEK!\n  \nWednesday- King Trivia/ Karaoke with Kirk!\n \nJoin us every Wednesday & Sunday for Team Trivia with King Trivia! \nEvery week\, teams of 2-6 people compete to prove they are the smartest\, or at least they have to most random information in their memory banks.  Not only do you get bragging rights\, but first place gets a $30 gift certificate\, second place gets a $20 gift certificate\, and if we have 5 or more teams we also give out third place!  Even if you aren’t so good at the trivia stuff (I suck at Trivia Crack)\, it’s fun to join in! Bring your friends who are smarter than you\, because you’re allowed to have up to 6 people on your trivia team-that’s why team trivia is better than solo trivia.  We don’t give points for creative answers\, but sometimes you’ll get free glassware and swag just for being the funniest.  Our host is Rebekah Fear stay late to hear her sing some badass karaoke. \nTeam Trivia starts at 7:30pm\, so don’t stop home after work\, come straight to the bar to get here before 7pm to take advantage of our happy hour specials!  We serve pizza\, tacos\, burritos & quesadillas\, so no need to drive through on your way here\, but if you’re craving a burger or sushi\, that’s ok too.  We allow outside food as long as its none of the food mentioned above.  It is a one DRINK per person minimum to participate in our team trivia- if you’re sober\, that’s okay\, we have soda\, juice\, non alcoholic beer and delicious cold-pressed coffee from Modern Times Brewery! \n  \n \nWhen team trivia is over around 10pm\, we have Emily Kirk getting you Kirked all night long with her amazing pipes on karaoke. \nEmily is a musician and comedian and hosts events all over town and now she is at The Oaks on Wednesday\, & Thursday nights hosting karaoke for you! DESCRIPTION:OPEN EVERY DAY- DTLA Wells Fargo Center\nGraham Garden integrates Fountain Figures I-IV\, a collection of graceful sculptures created by late Los Angeles artist Robert Graham\, in a newly designed outdoor plaza at Halo. For over fifty years\, Robert Graham’s observation of the female form and use of scale allowed him to explore and create a range of intimate sized works and large public monuments\, widely celebrated for their precise iconic detail. \nThe sculptures were originally part of CRA/LA’s mission in 1985 to incorporate public art in redevelopment projects and revitalize Downtown Los Angeles. The four sculptures are currently situated in an exterior landscaped setting that Graham’s son\, Steven Graham\, consulted on as part of the renovation at Wells Fargo Center. \n  \n \nRobert Graham\, was a Mexican born sculptor\, and although you may not be familiar with his name\, you probably ARE familiar with some of his work. Graham’s monumental bronzes commemorate the human figure\, and are featured in 11 public places in and around the city of Angels. Including; The Olympic Gateway at the Memorial Coliseum\, The Torso at Rodeo Drive\, The Great Bronze Doors and Statue of Mary at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels\, and The Dance Door – Los Angeles Music Center \n  \n \nAnd now\, you can see his latest collection. The Robert Graham Sculpture Garden gracefully nestled in the newly designed outdoor plaza at Halo\, at Wells Fargo Center. \nThis collection is a unique addition\, to the Olympic Celebration\, coming to LA in 2028\, The collection of four bronze fountain figures\, was inspired by gymnastic athleticism\, strength\, and beauty. TUES – SUNDAY- Exposition Park\nThe California African American Museum (CAAM) focuses on enrichment and education on the cultural heritage and history of African Americans with a focus on California and western United States. \nAdmission is free to all visitors. The California African American Museum’s mission is to research\, collect\, preserve\, and interpret for public enrichment the history\, art\, and culture of African Americans with an emphasis on California and the western United States. \n \nCalifornia African American Museum (CAAM) Temporarily Closed For Repair\n  \nCAAM’s permanent collection consists of over 4\,000 objects ranging from the 1800s to the present. It encompasses paintings\, photographs\, film\, sculpture\, historical documents\, and artifacts\, and it spans nineteenth-century landscape paintings to modern artworks to contemporary mixed-media reflections on cultural and political events. \n \n  \nThe Museum’s first acquisitions included a bronze bust of civil rights activist Dr. Mary Mcleod Bethune by artist Richmond Barthé and a sculpture by artist Maren Hassinger\, then at the start of her career. These laid the perfect groundwork for CAAM’s mandate to assemble a comprehensive\, thoughtful\, and wide-reaching collection. \n \n  \nCAAM’s deepest holdings include art made or connected to African Americans in California and the western United States. However\, the Museum also has significant works of contemporary art from the African diaspora (including Haiti\, Brazil\, and Jamaica)\, as well as traditional African art from Western\, Central\, and Sub-Saharan Africa. CAAM aims to represent the diverse contributions of African Americans in the United States\, but also to interpret how the past has affected identity in the present. \nCalifornia African American Museum (CAAM) Temporarily Closed For Repair\nToday\, CAAM oversees\, exhibits\, and conserves a rapidly growing collection. Each quarter\, curators review the current holdings and decide as a committee on future acquisitions. When the state of California declared the La Plaza area a historic monument\, the Cal-Pac United Methodist Conference was forced to give up the church and the adjoining conference center through threat of eminent domain. The Conference moved its offices to Pasadena\, but the church remained\, with a 50 year lease at a $1 per year. \nThe Urban Foundation’s role  In the 1990‘s\, the city of Los Angeles took over the historic El Pueblo monument from the state\, and negotiations for a new church lease in 2002 were unsuccessful. In 2010\, the “La Plaza initiative\,” a program of the Urban Foundation and the United Methodist Cal-Pac Conference\, was founded and charged with negotiating a new lease. When the City of Los Angeles resisted negotiating in good faith\, the La Plaza congregation\, under the direction of founding museum director\, Leonora Barron\, led a series of protests and prayer services on the steps of City hall. After a year long struggle\, a fair agreement was reached. Mindfulness Meditation is the moment-by-moment process of actively and openly observing one’s physical\, mental\, and emotional experiences. Mindfulness has scientific support as a means to reduce stress\, improve attention\, boost the immune system\, reduce emotional reactivity\, and promote a general sense of health and well-being. These half hour weekly sessions are open to all who are interested in learning how to live more presently in life. No special clothing is required\, and participants are welcome to join for five minutes or enjoy the entire 30 minutes.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThese free weekly drop-in sessions usually take place in the Hammer’s Billy Wilder Theater but are now offered live online via Zoom. \nMindful Awareness Meditation is provided by UCLA & The Hammer Museum\n  \nff \n\nSessions are led by Diana Winston and other instructors from the UCLA Mindful Awareness Research Center. DESCRIPTION:A LITTLE BIT OF TOKYO IN LITTLE TOKYO- Japanese American National Museum\n\nThe James Irvine Japanese Garden is a traditional Japanese Garden located on the Little Tokyo campus of the Japanese American Cultural & Community Center. The garden is open to the public for enjoyment seven days a week between 10am and 4pm unless there is a special event. The Garden also serves as a unique and elegant venue for weddings\, photo shoots\, memorial services and other private events. \n\n\n\nHistory\n\nEstablished in 1981. \nA centerpiece of the Japanese American Cultural & Community Center\, the Garden also known as Seiryu-en or the Garden of the Clear Stream\, was constructed by more than 200 volunteers who contributed more than 3\,000 man-hours. The garden was designed by landscape architect Dr. Takeo Uesugi and received the National Landscape Award in 1981\, the nation’s highest award for environmental improvement and community beautification. Most recently\, the James Irvine Japanese Garden underwent a major restoration with the purpose of creating a revitalized green space in downtown Los Angeles and sharing the aesthetics of Japanese culture with the community. The James Irvine Garden has served the community\, for nearly three decades\, by providing a tranquil and elegant departure from the urban landscape. It is the intent of the Board of Directors\, staff\, members and volunteers of the Japanese American Community & Cultural Center that this tradition be maintained for the benefit of all. \n\n\n\n\n100 North Central Avenue\, Los Angeles\, California 90012 \n \nJapanese American National Museum is the first gallery in the United States dedicated to sharing the experience of Americans of Japanese ancestry as an integral part of U.S. story. Through its comprehensive collection of objects\, images and documents\, as well as multi-faceted exhibitions\, educational programs\, documentaries and publications.
