SUMMARY:The Old LA Zoo
DESCRIPTION:OPEN EVERYDAY- Griffith Park\nThe Old LA Zoo\, or The Griffith Park Zoo\, opened in 1912 and closed in 1966 with the opening of the new\, Los Angeles Zoo. The abandoned site of the Griffith Park Zoo\, complete with the ruins of animal enclosures\, is now a picnic area and hiking trail in Griffith Park. \n  \n \nThe Old LA Zoo opened in 1912 with a grand total of only 15 animals. Bears\, Lions\, Monkeys\, Macaw’s\, Elephants\, Reptiles\, Goats\, and Turtles now lived in the zoo\, which was built on the original site of Griffith J. Griffith‘s defunct ostrich farm. \n  \n \nAs Los Angeles grew\, the small Griffith Park Zoo was increasingly criticized as an “inadequate\, ugly\, poorly designed despite drawing more than 2 million visitors a year. \nIn 1958\, the city decided to create a brand new zoo\, and the Griffith Park Zoo closed in August 1966. Its animals were transferred to the new Los Angeles Zoo 2 miles away\, which opened a few months later. \n  \n \nThe animal enclosures\, with the bars removed\, were left as ruins and remain today. A large picnic area was added\, and NOW every summer\, the zoo is the location for the Independent Shakespeare Company’s  Free “Shakespeare in the Park” performances. \nThe Old Zoo is located on Griffith Park Dr. Only 2 miles from today’s LA Zoo\,   \n  \n \nUpon arriving\, you will see a small parking lot. Follow the path Up the hill to reach the abandoned enclosure. \nUpon arriving\, you will enter many of the original Grotto’s. There are lots of little spaces to crawl into\, AND stairs to climb up. \n  \n \nFollow the path around to get to the upper lever where you will find even more cages & enclosures. \n \nIf you are going to come for a visit\, make sure to bring a bottle of water and your imagination. \n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nfriendsofgriffithpark.org\n \n  \nFind more

SUMMARY:COME OUT AND RIDE
DESCRIPTION:EVERY 3rd SUNDAY @ VVMC | Abbot Kinney Blvd Venice\nJoin us every third Sunday\, for our monthly VVMC Venice Vintage Motorcycle Club 3rd Sunday Ride. We start gathering about 9am just north of Venice Blvd on Abbot Kinney Blvd. intage is preferred but all makes\, models\, and years are welcome. Bring your sense of adventure and a willingness to let go and just ride! \n1625 Abbot Kinney BoulevardVenice\, CA\, 90291 (map) \n9 am – Meet\n10 am – Kickstands up!\n12 pm – Return\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVintage preferred\, but all years\, makes\, and models are welcome!\nWe would like to stress that this is a safe and fun ride. \nSome guidelines for the ride: \n\n\nWe leave at 10 am sharp! \n\n\nBe gassed up and ready to go. \n\n\nDo not pass our Road Captains.  They are there to lead and keep everyone together. \n\n\nNo lane splitting in large rides. \n\n\nKeep your lines clean & eyes open! \n\n\n\n\n\nThe Story of VVMC\nIt all started in a garage in Venice…\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Venice Vintage Motorcycle Club is dedicated to the preservation and celebration of vintage motorcycles and of motorcycle culture.  We honor the craftsmanship and inherent beauty found in the design of all vintage motorbikes as something potent\, influential and representative of a time lost to history\, where things were built with pride and made to last. \nThe VVMC is a band of brothers and sisters compromised of more than 30 individuals faithful to and united by the love of riding and maintaining old motorcycles. Old bikes brought us together and we ride them like their maker intended.  Sometimes a little faster than that. \nWith our roots in Southern California\, we are committed to supporting our community in Venice and maintaining inclusion towards others upon the alter of the old machine. \n\n\n\nGeneral Questions\n\n\n\n\nQ: What do you consider “Vintage?”\nSome say 20\, some say 30 years old. We consider vintage to be pre ’79. It was around this time that bikes of most major manufacturers started to take on a more modern look. As well\, it was the last year Honda released a bike with a kick-start. That said\, we’re not snobs so don’t worry about it…unless it’s Wednesday. \nQ: Where and when do you ride?\nWe host a 3rd Sunday Ride every month. All makes\, models\, and years are welcome. See details on our Events Page. \nWednesday nights are club night and strictly vintage. Make friends with a member and you may just get an invite. The VVMC hosts various other rides and events throughout the year. Sign up for our mailing list and follow us on Facebook and Instagram to stay updated. \nQ: Do I have to be a member to join the rides?\nNope. Hop on your bike and come ride with us! \nQ: Does my bike have to be vintage to join the ride?\nNope. Vintage is preferred but all makes\, models\, and years are welcome \nQ: Can I join the VVMC?\nThe VVMC is a not a subscription type organization. It’s a small\, tight group of like-minded (and a bit crazy) friends. If you’re serious about joining the clan\, here’s the simple law: \n\nYou MUST own & ride a vintage (pre ’79) bike.\nPlan on riding with us and being active in the group for at least a year. Showing up on occasion doesn’t cut it. The patch must be thoroughly earned.\nWe expect you to volunteer your time at our events. Jump in and help out!\nDon’t be a tool… but maybe bring some with you (actual tools that is).\n\nQ: How can I stay informed about your rides & events?\nMake sure to sign up on our Email List\, check out our Events Page\, and find us on Facebook and Instagram. That should just about cover it. \n\n\nCome out and ride with us. \n\n\n\n\nSee You There!\n-VVMC \n\nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nvenicevintage.com\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

SUMMARY:Mount Wilson Observatory
DESCRIPTION:OPEN WEEKENDS- Mt Wilson\nMount Wilson Observatory is located on the summit of Mount Wilson above Pasadena at an altitude of 5715 feet. Mount Wilson Observatory is visible from much of the Los Angeles area. Free of charge\, this is a must see experience. \n  \n \n\n\nViewing through the 100-Inch Hooker Telescope\nThe world’s largest telescope from 1917 to 1949\, the 100-inch Telescope forever changed our understanding of the scale and nature of our Universe and launched a revolution in astronomy that continues through today. This world-heritage class instrument\, used by many of the greatest astronomers of the Twentieth Century\, has only recently been made available for regular public viewing. It is the largest telescope in the world that you can rent! Imagine looking through the telescope used by astronomers Edwin Hubble and Milton Humason in the late 1920s to measure the expansion of the Universe. \n\n  \n \nThe 60 inch Telescope\nMount Wilson Observatory’s 60-inch telescope was completed in 1908 by Observatory founder George Ellery Hale with funding from Andrew Carnegie. It was the world’s largest operational telescope until Hale went on to complete the Mt. Wilson 100-inch telescope in 1917. For a more detailed history of this revolutionary instrument\, which became the model for all large observatory telescopes of the future\, see the article “Building the 60-inch Telescope.” Among the many important discoveries from the 60-inch telescope was Harlow Shapley’s revelation in 1918 that the accepted view of the time\, that our Sun was near the center of the Milky Way Galaxy\, was wrong. Shapley used the light gathering power of the 60-inch to show that our solar system is instead half way out toward the edge of our Galaxy. The telescope was a workhorse instrument for astronomy for over half a century and used by astronomical luminaries such as Edwin Hubble\, Walter Baade\, and Allan Sandage to unravel the secrets of stars and galaxies. Now retired from active scientific service\, the 60-inch and the 100-inch telescopes are the largest in the world made exclusively available to the public. With their large light-collecting mirrors and the exquisite skies over Mount Wilson\, these historic telescopes provide an unrivaled and unique astronomical experience. \n\n\n\n\n\nCHARA (Center for High Angular Resolution Astronomy)\nMount Wilson’s newest astronomical instruments are Georgia State University’s optical interferometric array of six telescopes. This facility\, located here because of the exceptional seeing conditions\, puts Mount Wilson back on the cutting edge of astrophysics. The full array was completed in 2004. Each telescope of the CHARA Array has a light-collecting mirror 1-meter in diameter. The telescopes are dispersed over the mountain to provide a two-dimensional layout that provides the resolving capability (but not the light collecting ability!) of a single telescope a fifth of a mile in diameter. Light from the individual telescopes is conveyed through vacuum tubes to a central Beam Synthesis Facility in which the six beams are combined together. When the paths of the individual beams are matched to an accuracy of less than one micron\, after the light traverses distances of hundreds of meters\, the Array then acts like a single coherent telescope for the purposes of achieving exceptionally high angular resolution. The Array is capable of resolving details as small as 200 micro-arcseconds\, equivalent to the angular size of a nickel seen from a distance of 10\,000 miles. In terms of the number and size of its individual telescopes\, its ability to operate at visible and near infrared wavelengths\, and its longest baselines of 330 meters\, the CHARA Array is arguably the most powerful instrument of its kind in the world. \nScience Objectives\nThe Array is applicable to problems in almost all areas of contemporary astronomy. It is particularly suited to stellar astrophysics where it will be used to measure the diameters\, distances\, masses\, and luminosities of stars\, as well as to image features such as spots and flares on their surfaces. Other projects range from detecting planetary systems\, imaging stars in process of formation\, and studies of bright transient phenomena like novae. \nFor more information on this amazing research facility and the science that is emerging from it\, please go to the CHARA array homepage. There you can find a video\, Sizing up the Stars\, that explains how interferometry works. \n\n\n\n \nAstronomical Museum\nAlso on the mountain\, next to the 100-inch telescope\, there is a new exhibit hall that displays Albert Michelson’s original interferometer\, used to get the first measurement of stars other than our Sun.  The exhibit hall reveals in detail how the light is combined in the new CHARA area. \nWeekend Public Guided Tours\n\n\n\n\n\nDocent-led walking tours of the observatory take place on Saturdays and Sundays through November 29. The two hour tours depart at 11:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. sharp from the Cosmic Cafe located above the large parking lot at the entrance to the Observatory. A special feature of these tours is entrance into both the 60-inch and 100-inch telescope domes\, as well as the observing room of the 150-foot Solar Tower Telescope.  On rare occasions\, a telescope may be closed to the tour due to a special event or maintenance. \n\n\nPurchasing Tickets \nTickets are $15 (adults) and $13 (ages 12 and under & 62 and older). Tour tickets are available for same-day purchase at the Cosmic Café\, and rarely sell out. For each tour\, 15 spots are available. \nIf you have a large group\, we urge you to opt for a private tour instead. These can be arranged by sending an email request to tours@mtwilson.edu. \nChildren under age 6 are not permitted. The tours involve about a mile of walking and climbing some stairs. Please read the Health Notice in the information tab. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPrivate Group Tours\nPrivate guided tours may be arranged by individuals or groups in advance. A modest per-person fee is charged. More information is available here. Please contact tours@mtwilson.edu for more details and a private tour request form. Private tours are held in the daytime only and do not include looking through a telescope. \n\n\n Weather conditions may occasionally result in unscheduled closures. Access to Mount Wilson is via the Angeles Crest Highway (CA Hwy 2) from the 210 Freeway at La Canada Flintridge. You can download a printable PDF map with directions here.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nThe Cosmic Café Sandwich Shop\nCome up the mountain for a wonderful lunch in an incomparable setting. Located in the Pavilion above the main parking lot\, serves fresh-made sandwiches and other treats and souvenirs on Saturdays and Sundays through early November\, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. \n  \n\n\n \nFree Self Guided Tours\nIf you are planning ahead and would like a nice guide of your visit\, Print your own free brochure for a self-guided tour and map of Mount Wilson. \n\n\n\nAn Interactive Map\nTo explore the telescopes and other sites on observatory online\, click on the interactive map of the Observatory\, above. \n  \n\n\n \nA 13-page Visitors Guide is also available for purchase at the Cosmic Café. Written by Hal McAlister\, the second director of the Mount Wilson Institute and founder of CHARA\, it is a well-illustrated guide to all the points of interest on the mountaintop. \n\n\n\n\nElevation Warning\nThe high elevation of the Observatory (5715 ft) and the change in elevation during the approximately one-mile and two-hour long tour are unsuitable for individuals with respiratory and heart problems or with limited mobility. \nThe century-old facilities are not ADA-compliant and\, except for the Astronomical Museum and the Cosmic Cafe\, offer no access to those who cannot climb multiple flights of stars. Thus\, tours of the Observatory\, either guided or unguided\, are inappropriate for some elderly people and for those who are not in good health. \nVisitors should take these factors into consideration before touring the Observatory. \n\n\n\nParking\n\n\n\nA U.S. Forest Service Adventure Pass is required to park at the Observatory\, as it is located on U.S. Forest Service land. A day pass may be purchased at the Cosmic Cafe (when it is open from April 4 to November 29 in 2020) on weekends between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Other times\, the $5 day pass or the $30 dollar annual pass may be purchased at many locations around Los Angeles before you head up.  Click here to go to the U.S. Forest Service website for more information about the Adventure Pass and where to buy them. Their website has a place to enter your location to search for nearby vendors. The Shell station in La Canada at the bottom of the Angeles Crest Highway should be selling them as well. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n</div> \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHours\nApril 1 – November 1 Saturday – Sunday: 10:00am – 5:00pm \nDecember 1 – March 31 Saturday – Sunday: : 10am – 4:00pm \n\n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nwww.mtwilson.edu/\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

No previous experience necessary. Please bring your own yoga mat and water. Indoors. \n \nSunday\, August 21- 11:00am- 12:00pm\n \n \n  \n\n\n\n600 State Drive\, Exposition Park\, Los Angeles\, California 90037 \n  \nFREE! TUES – SUNDAY- Exposition Park\nThe California African American Museum (CAAM) focuses on enrichment and education on the cultural heritage and history of African Americans with a focus on California and western United States. \n  \n \nAdmission is free to all visitors. The California African American Museum’s mission is to research\, collect\, preserve\, and interpret for public enrichment the history\, art\, and culture of African Americans with an emphasis on California and the western United States. \n  \n \nCAAM’s permanent collection consists of over 4\,000 objects ranging from the 1800s to the present. It encompasses paintings\, photographs\, film\, sculpture\, historical documents\, and artifacts\, and it spans nineteenth-century landscape paintings to modern artworks to contemporary mixed-media reflections on cultural and political events. \n  \n \nThe Museum’s first acquisitions included a bronze bust of civil rights activist Dr. Mary Mcleod Bethune by artist Richmond Barthé and a sculpture by artist Maren Hassinger\, then at the start of her career. These laid the perfect groundwork for CAAM’s mandate to assemble a comprehensive\, thoughtful\, and wide-reaching collection. \nCAAM’s deepest holdings include art made or connected to African Americans in California and the western United States. However\, the Museum also has significant works of contemporary art from the African diaspora (including Haiti\, Brazil\, and Jamaica)\, as well as traditional African art from Western\, Central\, and Sub-Saharan Africa. CAAM aims to represent the diverse contributions of African Americans in the United States\, but also to interpret how the past has affected identity in the present. \n  \n \nToday\, CAAM oversees\, exhibits\, and conserves a rapidly growing collection. Each quarter\, curators review the current holdings and decide as a committee on future acquisitions. We view our collection as a living body — constantly evolving\, growing\, and reflecting the world in which we live. \n  \n \nSome examples of CAAM’s collection include the Walter Burrell Collection of audio recordings of Burrell’s interviews with African American celebrities\, broadcast by a local radio station in the early 1970s; the oral histories of Celes King\, who was both a local civil rights activist as well as a former Tuskegee airman; and selections from the collection of visual artist John Outterbridge. \n  \nHours\nTuesdays – Saturdays: 10:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.\nSundays: 11:00 a.m.-5:00p.m.\nMondays: Closed \n  \n\n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \ncaamuseum.org\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:FREE DAY AT WALT DISNEY'S BARN
DESCRIPTION:OPEN EVERY THIRD SUNDAY- in Holmby Hills\nIn 1950\, Walt built the The Carolwood Pacific Railroad in the backyard of his house in Holmby Hills\, California. He named the railroad for the street where he lived: Carolwood Drive. The first run on the Carolwood Pacific Railroad took place on May 7\, 1950. The 2\,615 feet of track included a 46 foot long trestle and a 90 foot long tunnel under his wife’s flower bed. Amidst the railroad\, he had a barn built where he could monitor and remotely control the switches on the track. The barn also served as a workshop and a place for Walt and his friends to relax. \n \n  \nWhen the Holmby Hills home was sold\, the new owners had plans to preserve the house\, but discovered that due to structural issues and asbestos\, they demolished the existing structures and built a new home. Fortunately\, Walt’s daughter Diane Disney Miller recognized the importance of the Barn and began the process of saving it before escrow closed. Diane contacted Michael and Sharon Broggie\, founders of the Carolwood Society\, who began planning what to do with the Barn. A general contractor\, Bill Abel\, was hired to dismantle the Barn and it was stored until an agreement was secured with the City of Los Angeles and the Los Angeles Live Steamers Museum. It opened in Griffith Park as a loan to the people of Los Angeles on July 19\, 1999\, and is located inside the 1/8th scale track\, the same scale that Walt had at his home. \n  \n\nWalt Disney’s Barn\nWalt spent many hours in the Barn not only working on his trains\, but thinking about new projects and ideas. One could say that this Barn is the birthplace of Imagineering. \n  \n \nToday\, the Barn is in a beautifully landscaped part of the park\, with several nice picnic tables and many benches. Bring your family and a picnic basket to enjoy your lunch and some Walt Disney\, railroad\, and Disneyland history. The Barn is small\, but full of many interesting items to learn about\, and lots of wonderful stories. \n  \n \nThe Barn is open on the 3rd Sunday of each month from 11 am to 3 pm. Parking is free\, and admission is free. Donations to the Los Angeles Live Steamers Museum are accepted. \n  \nHours\nEvery 3rd Sunday: 11:00am – 3:00pm\n\nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \ncarolwood.com\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

Experience #TheBroadFromHome to find inspiration through music\, poetry\, performance\, workshops\, and conversations centered around the Broad collection. \nOverview \nPerformances \nTalks & Conversations \nArtist Spotlight \nFamily Art Workshops \nMore Online Programs \n  \nThe Broad Collection\nEli and Edythe Broad have been building their collection of postwar and contemporary art over the last 50 years. With a belief that the greatest art collections are built when the art is being made\, the Broads took to collecting art of their own time. \nThe Broad is home to 2\,000 works in the Broad collection by more than 200 artists\, and is one of the world’s leading collections of postwar and contemporary art. The collection features in-depth holdings of influential contemporary artists such as Jean-Michel Basquiat\, Mark Bradford\, Jasper Johns\, Jeff Koons\, Barbara Kruger\, Yayoi Kusama\, Kerry James Marshall\, Julie Mehretu\, Takashi Murakami\, Robert Rauschenberg\, Ed Ruscha\, Cindy Sherman\, Cy Twombly\, Andy Warhol\, and more\, plus an ever-growing representation of younger artists. \n  \nView Our Collection Here\n \nIn Under the Table\, 1994\, the viewer is both in the world of imaginary giants and in the world of remembered childhood. Fusing Alice in Wonderland with the Duchampian tradition of the readymade\, Artist Robert Therrien constructs a doppelganger from an everyday object\, both displaying his visual wit and actualizing literary or imaginative fantasy in three-dimensional space. The table exudes an extraordinary aura\, compelling one to walk underneath the table and conjuring the physical memory of being under the table of one’s childhood home. Complicated and powerful\, the work offers fresh ideas of what a table\, sculpture\, and memory can mean. \n  \n  \n \nUsing the recognizable form of a balloon twisted into the shape of a dog\, Koons has frozen a moment in time\, exaggerating both scale and material. \nBalloon Dog (Blue) is literal and abstract. When standing close to it\, one’s own distorted reflection bends around smooth pert curves. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\nGeneral Admission is Free\nAll visitors must reserve timed tickets in advance. Some exhibitions and events carry a separate charge. \n\n\n\n\n\nHours\nMonday: Closed\nTuesday – Wednesday: 11:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.\nThursday – Friday: 11:00 a.m.-8:00 p.m.\nSaturday: 10:00 a.m.-8:00p.m.\nSunday: 10:00 a.m.-6:00p.m. \n\n\n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nhttps://www.thebroad.org/visit/mirror-rooms\n \n  \nFind more

SUMMARY:Mario Moore: Enshrined
DESCRIPTION:NOW ON EXHIBIT – CAAM\, Expositions Park\nWitness as California African American Museum opens exhibit on Mario Moore’s “Enshrined: Presence + Preservation”\, on display until October 2. \nMario Moore\, born and based in Detroit\, is a figurative painter whose subjects stand tall\, gazing confidently at the viewer. They convey a dignified presence without regalia\, a type of depiction that places Moore’s portraiture within a lineage of artists such as Kerry James Marshall\, Barkley L. Hendricks\, and one of Moore’s earliest influences\, the seventeenth-century Spanish painter Diego Velázquez. \nMario Moore | Enshrined: Presence + Preservation\, Moore’s first solo exhibition in California\, brings together work from early in his career as well as his most recent series\, The Work of Several Lifetimes (2019)\, created with the support of Princeton University’s esteemed Hodder Fellowship. Together\, these works represent the artist’s desire to make visible the dedicated work of marginalized groups in this country. For many years\, Moore has foregrounded the contributions of essential and frontline workers in his paintings\, an effort that has become even more poignant during this time of global pandemic\, as their labors have enabled and ensured the well-being of us all. This exhibition brings to light Moore’s commitment to celebrating his subjects—both their labor and leisure. His paintings encourage us to question who is deserving of portraiture and\, thus\, preservation. \nThis presentation of Enshrined: Presence + Preservation debuts two new portraits made especially for the exhibition at CAAM that feature women who have worked as custodians at the Museum. By recognizing them\, Moore provides us with an opportunity to honor all of the workers whose labor\, often behind the scenes\, is integral to the success of museums such as CAAM. \nMario Moore | Enshrined: Presence + Preservation is curated by Taylor Renee Aldridge\, visual arts curator. \nCAAM recently interviewed Mario Moore about this exhibition: \n\n\n600 State Drive\, Exposition Park\, Los Angeles\, California 90037 \n  \nFREE! TUES – SUNDAY- Exposition Park\nThe California African American Museum (CAAM) focuses on enrichment and education on the cultural heritage and history of African Americans with a focus on California and western United States. \n \nAdmission is free to all visitors. The California African American Museum’s mission is to research\, collect\, preserve\, and interpret for public enrichment the history\, art\, and culture of African Americans with an emphasis on California and the western United States. \n \nCAAM’s permanent collection consists of over 4\,000 objects ranging from the 1800s to the present. It encompasses paintings\, photographs\, film\, sculpture\, historical documents\, and artifacts\, and it spans nineteenth-century landscape paintings to modern artworks to contemporary mixed-media reflections on cultural and political events. \n \nThe Museum’s first acquisitions included a bronze bust of civil rights activist Dr. \n \nToday\, CAAM oversees\, exhibits\, and conserves a rapidly growing collection. Each quarter\, curators review the current holdings and decide as a committee on future acquisitions. We view our collection as a living body — constantly evolving\, growing\, and reflecting the world in which we live. \n \nSome examples of CAAM’s collection include the Walter Burrell Collection of audio recordings of Burrell’s interviews with African American celebrities\, broadcast by a local radio station in the early 1970s; the oral histories of Celes King\, who was both a local civil rights activist as well as a former Tuskegee airman; and selections from the collection of visual artist John Outterbridge. \n\nHours\nMonday: Closed\nTuesday – Saturday: 10:00am – 5:00pm\nSunday: 11:00am – 5:00pm \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nhttps://caamuseum.org/exhibitions/2022/enshrined-presence-preservation\n \n  \nFind more

SUMMARY:Flight Path Museum at LAX
DESCRIPTION:OPEN SATURDAYS & SUNDAYS- LAX\nThe Flight Path Museum & Learning Center is an aviation and aerospace museum with unique artifacts and views of the LAX runway. Flight Path Learning Center of Southern California was founded in 1995 as a nonprofit\, community-based organization to honor aviation pioneers\, recognize the economic importance of aviation and aerospace to Southern California\, and encourage youth to pursue education and careers in aviation-related fields. The kickoff project was a series of sidewalk plaques in the LAX business district saluting aviation pioneers\, organizations and locations. This “Flight Path” is the aviation equivalent of the famed Hollywood Walk of Fame. \n \n\n  \nUnique among the fine aviation museums in Southern California is the Flight Path Museum’s location\, the only aviation museum and research center situated at a major airport and the only facility with a primary emphasis on contributions of civil aviation to the history and development of Southern California. \n\n\nThe Flight Path Museum gallery of exhibits\, filled with memories of aviation’s golden years\, is located adjacent to the LAX airfield\, where today’s aircraft and travelers arrive and depart the world’s busiest origin and destination airport. No other museum offers such a perspective on contemporary aircraft and aviation. \n\nExhibits\n\n\n\nCOMMERCIAL AVIATION HISTORY EXHIBIT\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Flight Path museum houses an extensive collection of airline artifacts from the beginning of the commercial aviation era to present day. It was developed as a larger\, improved 14-bed sleeper version of the Douglas DC-2. It is a low-wing metal monoplane with a tailwheel landing gear\, with a cruise speed of 207 mph (333 km/h)\, commercial capacity of 21 to 32 passengers or 6\,000 lbs (2\,700 kg) of cargo\, a range of 1\,500 mi (2\,400 km)\, and could operate from short runways.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Aircraft was displayed for many years at the California Science Center in Exposition Park in Los Angeles. It has been on loan to the Flight Path Museum LAX since September 2006. \n  \n\n\n\n\nSPACE EXPLORATION EXHIBIT\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAstronaut Flight Suit\nSpace Debris\nModel Rockets\nTribute to 50 years since the Apollo Program\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFlight Path hosts the Space Exploration Gallery that spotlights the history and development of space flight. The airline was bought by Federal Express in 1988.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe airline was named after the Flying Tigers fighter unit of World War II\, officially the 1st American Volunteer Group. Ten former AVG pilots formed the Flying Tiger Line (established as National Skyway Freight) after returning to the United States in 1945\, using a small fleet of Budd Company C-93 Conestoga freighters purchased as war surplus from the United States Navy. The pilots and two ground crew provided half of the initial investment\, with the balance coming from California oil tycoon Samuel B. Mosher. For the next four years\, Flying Tiger Line carried air freight on contract throughout the U.S. and\, as the airline expanded\, carrying supplies to U.S. troops under Gen. Douglas MacArthur during the occupation of Japan. \n  \n\n\n\n\nFIRE FIGHTING VEHICLE EXHIBIT\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn permanent display on the airside of the museum is a retied ARFF (Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting)  truck used at LAX. The Oshkosh M3000 model was manufactured by Oshkosh Corporation in Appleton\, Wisconsin and entered service at LAX in 1995\, it stayed in operation for about a decade and a half. Maximum operating load is 148\,000lbs\, 3\,000 gallons of water and 500 gallons of foam. Made to reach potential accidents sites at top speed\, it reached speeds of 50mph in a sprint.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nToday\, ARFF operations at LAX are conducted out of one station near the center of the airport\, Station 80 is a part of the Los Angeles Fire Department. They currently operate six Panther trucks manufactured by Rosenbauer America. In addition to ARFF operations\, there is a city fire-station that responds to EMS and non-ARFF emergencies on the airfield located within the airport operations area adjacent to Sepulveda Blvd. \n\nAdmission\nMUSEUM TIMED VISIT: ADULT (ONE HOUR): $5.00 \nMUSEUM TIMED VISIT: CHILD\, SENIOR\, MILITARY OR LAX BADGED (ONE HOUR): $3.00 \n\nHours\nSunday – Saturday: 12:00pm – 4:00pm \n\n\nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nhttps://flightpathlax.com/\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

SUMMARY:Now On Exhibit @ The FOWLER- Gosette Lubondo: Imaginary Trip
DESCRIPTION:NOW THRU NOVEMBER 13TH- Westwood Village\, UCLA\nThe Fowler Museum at UCLA presents \nGosette Lubondo: Imaginary Trip\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGosette Lubondo: Imaginary Trip\n\n\nExtended through September 18!\n\n\nCongolese photographer Gosette Lubondo’s Imaginary Trip series probes the intersections of memory and architecture\, examining tensions between residual colonial constructs and contemporary life in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Lubondo places herself in these pictures\, wearing a range of guises and interacting with other subjects. Bodies fluctuate in and out of corporeality; some are solidly in the present while others seem to emerge from a ghostly past. Staged in stylized\, almost nostalgic tableaux\, the characters inhabit one of two settings: a train car and a school\, both abandoned and devoid of the vitality that historically characterized these key nodes of colonial infrastructure. With each photograph\, Lubondo imagines her way through the lingering remnants of her country’s colonial past. Schools and stations once humming with movement and exchange now conjure the ghosts of a bygone waystation—a fitting metaphor for Lubondo’s journey and the memory of previous generations who passed through. \n\n\n\n\n\nPRESS RELEASE: Gosette Lubondo: Imaginary Trip \nGosette Lubondo: Imaginary Trip is organized by the Fowler Museum at UCLA and curated by Erica P. Recently\, more than 400 textiles made by the Kuba peoples of the Democratic Republic of the Congo were gifted by the Christensen Foundation. \nThe collection represents some of the finest examples of men’s embroidered raffia pile cloths and women’s appliqué cloths. This collection complements already significant holdings of West African textiles from countries such as Mali and Ghana\, including kente and adinkra cloth and Asafo flags. The museum also has significant holdings of arts from the African Americas\, notably arts of Haitian Vodou\, Brazil and Suriname. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nARTS OF THE AMERICAS\n \nThese holdings include a comprehensive collection of pre-Columbian ceramics with the best representations from West Mexico\, the Valley of Mexico\, and pre-Columbian Peru (with special strengths in the art of the Moche). The Fowler also possesses a cohesive collection of Guatemalan costumes; an extensive collection of Mexican clothing; textiles of Peru; and a comprehensive representation of field-collected market materials from Michoacan\, Mexico. Complementing the pre-Columbian collections are field collections of the Warao and Yecuana Indians of the Orinoco Delta of Venezuela and contemporary Latin American popular arts including Mexican trees of life\, Day of the Dead figures\, and masks from Metepec\, Oaxaca\, Michoacan\, Jalisco\, Peubla\, and Guanajuato. \nNative American materials from the U.S. and Canada are a small but significant part of the collection. Materials from the United States and Canada include well-known Northwest Coast material\, as well as a notable cross section of late nineteenth-century Inuit art and material culture. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nARTS OF ASIA AND THE PACIFIC \n \n  \nThe Fowler Museum at UCLA collections from Insular Southeast Asia\, including Indonesia\, the Philippines\, Malaysia\, and aboriginal Taiwan\, are among the strongest in the United States. The Indonesian and Philippine textiles reinforce the Fowler Museum’s standing as a major repository for the textile arts. Also included are significant collections of sculptural material from Sumatra\, Borneo\, Sulawesi\, and Luzon\, puppetry from Java and Bali\, basketry from Indonesia and Philippines\, and metalwork from the Philippines. The primary strength of the Pacific collections lies in materials from Papua New Guinea\, especially the Papuan Gulf\, Trobriand Islands\, Sepik River\, and Maprik region. Australia and Polynesia are also represented by sizeable collections\, including 45 rare Maori cloaks. \nThe collections from mainland Asia are smaller but growing rapidly\, due to current collecting priorities. A collection of betel-chewing paraphernalia\, representing several countries in South and Southeast Asia\, is considered one of the finest in the world. Other holdings include textiles from Bhutan\, Pakistan\, India and Japan\, baskets and decorative arts from Japan\, puppetry from China\, Thailand\, India\, and Turkey\, and art and artifacts from Nepal. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nARCHAEOLOGICAL COLLECTIONS\n \nThe Fowler Museum at UCLA also serves as a repository for archaeological collections acquired during research conducted by UCLA faculty\, staff\, students\, and other professional archaeologists. Documentation of the collections includes artifact catalogs\, excavation notes\, maps\, and photographs. These collections serve primarily as an archive for teaching and research. The Museum is compliant with guidelines mandates by the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) and has been signaled out by the State of California for its exemplary efforts. \nArchaeological collection areas include: \nCalifornia \nCollections from approximately 1100 sites\, mostly in Southern California. \nSouthwest \nSignificant collections from the Rainbow Bridge-Monument Valley Expedition of 1933-1938 and several Parowan Fremont sites in Utah excavated in the 1950’s\, and other Anasazi and Hohokam sites. \nMexico \nIncludes objects from 218 sites\, mostly in western and central Mexico. \nSudan \nThe Nubian/Egyptian fortress site at Askut is the source of approximately 60\,000 artifacts excavated by UCLA archaeologist Alexander Badawy in conjunction with the Aswan High Dam Salvage Campaign\, 1962-1964. \nOld World stone tool collection \nIncludes tools from Europe and the Middle East. \n\n\nMUSEUM HOURS\n\n\n\n\nAdmission is FREE \nMonday: closed\nTuesday: closed\nWednesday: 12 – 8pm\nThursday: 12 – 5pm\nFriday: 12 – 5pm\nSaturday: 12 – 5pm\nSunday: 12 – 5pm \n\n\n\n\n\nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nfowler.ucla.edu\n \n\n  \nFind more

SUMMARY:Cabrillo Marine Aquarium
DESCRIPTION:OPEN WEDNESDAY – SUNDAY- San Pedro\nCabrillo Marine Aquarium welcomes you to come discover the underwater world of Southern California. \n \nSince 1935\, we have been exhibiting Southern California’s rich diversity and adaptations of our local sea life through a combination of aquaria\, interpretive displays and museum collections. Cabrillo Marine Aquarium’s Susanne Lawrenz-Miller Exhibit Hall\, Exploration Center\, Aquatic Nursery and Virginia Reid Moore Marine Research Library comprise a unique science education facility where visitors of all ages can pursue informal marine biology education\, ecological awareness\, and scientific research training. These complex topics are made fun and accessible by the creative and informative exhibits.\n\nSusanne Lawrenz-Miller Exhibit Hall\nThe Susanne Lawrenz-Miller Exhibit Hall showcases three major environments: Rocky Shores\, Sand and Mud\, and Open Ocean Ecosystems. Explore interpretative and live exhibits to learn about the many animals and plants that live in each habitat. From worms to whales – all are adapted to protect themselves\, find food and reproduce. \n\n\n\n\nKelp Forests\nThe richest habitat along our Californian rocky shores is the kelp forest. Giant kelp is the largest and fastest growing of all seaweeds and forms the framework for the kelp forest community. It attracts and influences many other species of animals and plants within the forest. Later\, when it tears loose as drift kelp\, it provides large quantities of food for animals living on the seashore and ocean bottom. \nKelp bass\, giant kelpfish\, garibaldi\, norris’ top snail\, and kelp crabs are all common inhabitants of the kelp forest. Kelp anchors to the rocky bottom with a structure called the holdfast. The holdfast has many crevices and is home to many other animals such as spiny brittlestars and amphipods. The leaf-like kelp blades (also called fronds) provide a large surface area for photosynthesis. On the blades themselves\, a bryozoan can grow rapidly and completely cover a kelp blade within 3-4 weeks. \nKelp forests are found along the west coasts of North and South America\, the southern tip of Africa and Australia\, and islands near Antarctica. Giant kelp grows best in well mixed\, cool\, clear ocean water. In southern California\, giant kelp beds were common until the 1950s. Changes in water conditions and the near extinction of the southern sea otter\, which resulted in a population explosion of the purple sea urchin\, severely reduced the size and number of local kelp beds for several years. Due to restoration efforts\, kelp forests have recovered along Palos Verdes in the last several years. \n \nMudflats\nThe mudflat habitat is an enclosed coastal area with fresh and saltwater saturated sediments. Mudflats appear barren but conceal a rich variety of life. Many animals depend on this fragile and threatened habitat. Commercially important fish\, such as the California halibut\, use this habitat as a nursery ground which provides protection and a rich source of food. \nThe area surrounding the upper part of the mud is called the saltmarsh and teems with plants. Marsh plants provide shelter and living space for other organisms. The breakdown and decay of these plants produce organic debris which is a rich food source for a variety of invertebrates\, like fiddler crabs and amphipods. These animals are an attractive food source for the mudflat’s large bird population\, including the willet and snowy egret. Over 100 species of birds reside in or visit southern California mudflats. \nThe highest zone is dominated by salt grass which can tolerate only the occasional tidal flooding that occurs at this level. The middle zone is characterized by pickleweed which is more tolerant of tidal flooding. The lowest zone teems with eel grass which is one of the few marsh plants that can grow completely underwater. \nVisit the mudflat room at the aquarium to learn more about marsh plants and the many animals that depend on this important habitat. \n\n\n\nRocky Shores\nThe rocky shore is a difficult place to live\, yet some of the largest and most diverse populations of marine plants and animals can be found here. Explore how these animals have many different adaptations to protect themselves and find food. \nSeaweeds and microscopic plants produce the basic food of the ocean using the sun’s energy. Seaweeds then provide food for such grazers as snails\, sea hares and urchins. In the rocky shore\, sponges\, sea squirts\, mussels\, fanworms and barnacles filter tiny food particles from the water. Sea anemones and their relatives are hungry predators. These animals\, in turn\, are eaten by the flamboyant nudibranch slugs and other snails. \nThe richest habitat along our Californian rocky shores is the kelp forest. Kelp grows up to two feet a day and provides food and shelter for many other plants and animals. \nHunters of the seashore capture their prey in different ways. Sea stars use hundreds of tube feet. Worms and snails may drill or harpoon their prey\, while some crabs use powerful crushing claws. \nWhile visiting the touch tank you can experience a variety of rocky shore marine life such as a sea star or a prickly urchin. The touch tank expert will teach you the names and special traits of the marine life as well as answer any of your questions. \n \nOpen Ocean\nThe vast open ocean and deep sea are home to delicate jellyfish\, light-producing animals\, and other organisms ranging from the beautiful to the bizarre.\n\nBe sure to stop by the Sea Jelly Lab and see what’s growing in this open husbandry lab. Students\, volunteers and staff are often seen working on a variety of projects here. You might even be shown baby jellies on the microscope monitor.\nShapes\, colors\, and behavior of the fish in the Fish Diversity Tank reflect where and how these fish live.  See how sharks come in an amazing variety of sizes\, shapes\, and habitats and how some of the biggest sharks are gentle filter-feeders instead of ferocious predators.\nThe Channel Islands are major breeding grounds for many thousands of seabirds\, seals and sea lions.  Feeding and nesting habitats are displayed.\nWhales and dolphins\, descended from land mammals\, are the largest and most intelligent animals of the ocean.  The lives of these big mammals are examined in special exhibits on feeding\, a video of various cetaceans\, displays of whale and dolphin skeletons\, and recordings of whale sounds\n\n\n\nOur marine life is all from Southern California. Want to see some of them and learn more?\n\n\nTake a look around our exhibits to experience the marine life of Southern California.\n\n\n  \nHours\nMonday & Tuesday: Closed\nWednesday – Sunday: 12:00am – 5:00pm \nAdmission is free but donations are appreciated\n\n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nhttps://www.cabrillomarineaquarium.org/\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

In its original sense\, the term “museum” meant a spot dedicated to the muses – “a place where man’s mind could attain a mood of aloofness above everyday affairs.” By far the most important museum of antiquity was the great institution at Alexandria founded by Ptolemy Philadelphus in the third century before Christ\, (an endeavor supported by a grant from the treasury). And no treatment of the museum would be complete without mention of Noah’s Ark in which we find the complete Museum of Natural History the world has ever seen. \nThe Museum of Jurassic Technology traces its origins to this period when many of the essential collections of today were beginning to take form. Many exhibits which we today have come to know as part of the Museum were\, in fact\, formally part of other less well-known collections and were subsequently consolidated into the single collection which we have come to know as The Museum of Jurassic Technology and thus configured\, received great public acclaim as well as much discussion in scholastic circles. \n\nHours\nMonday – Wednesday: Closed\nThursday – Friday : 2:00pm – 8:00pm\nSaturday – Sunday: 12:00pm – 6:00pm \n\n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nwww.mjt.org\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

SUMMARY:Zeiss Telescopes
DESCRIPTION:DAILY – Griffith Observatory\n\n\nOBSERVE THE NIGHT SKIES AT GRIFFITH OBSERVATORY! Free telescope viewing is available each evening the Observatory is open and skies are clear. Knowledgeable telescope demonstrators are available to guide visitors in observing. \nObserving usually begins around 7:00 p.m. Please be aware the demonstrators must cut off the line for each telescope at 9:30 p.m. or earlier to enable all viewing to be completed by 9:45 p.m. Hours for telescope operation are not the same as for the building (which closes at 10:00 p.m.). \n\nThe Zeiss Telescopes\nGriffith Observatory is one of the premier public observatories in the world. One of the principal reasons is the presence and regular availability of high-quality public telescopes. Griffith J. Griffith wanted the public to have the opportunity to look through a telescope\, which he felt might broaden human perspective. Mounted in the copper-clad dome on the east end of the building is the Zeiss telescope array. This telescope is free to the public every night the Observatory is open and the sky is clear. \nThe 12-Inch Zeiss Refracting Telescope\nSince opening in 1935\, more than seven million people have put an eye to Griffith Observatory’s original 12-inch Zeiss refracting telescope. More people have looked through it than any other telescope in the world. Located in the roof-top dome on the building’s east end\, the Zeiss telescope is intended mainly for nighttime viewing by the general public\, commonly targeting the Moon\, planets\, and brightest showpiece objects of our galaxy. A popular public destination when special celestial events occur\, more people viewed Halley’s Comet and comets Hale-Bopp and Hyakutake through the Observatory’s Zeiss telescope than any other telescope on the planet. \n \nThe telescope itself is in excellent condition and was unchanged by the renovation and expansion project. The copper roof of the telescope dome was repaired and restored\, and the dome’s drive mechanisms were replaced. The most significant change is the addition of a new exhibit station located in the Hall of the Eye exhibit hall below the telescope dome. The station provides live video and audio feeds from the telescope and allows visitors unable to climb the stairs into the telescope dome to have an observing experience. Most nights\, other telescopes also are available on either the roof or front lawn to allow those in wheelchairs to observe directly. \nWhen the night sky is clear\, the Zeiss telescope is open from the roof and serves up to 600 visitors per night. One of the Observatory’s experienced telescope demonstrators guides the public in looking through the eyepiece of the 12-inch Zeiss refractor (so-called because its light is collected and focused by a 12-inch diameter glass lens at the front of the 16-foot-long telescope tube). The main telescope tube carries a smaller 9-inch refracting telescope piggyback\, which permits two different views of a single object\, as appropriate. \nThe telescope sits on a tilted mounting (an equatorial mount) aligned with the Earth’s axis\, and it is slowly turned by a motor to compensate for the Earth’s rotation so that objects remain centered in view for as long as is desired. Counterweights precisely balance the telescope so that the Telescope Demonstrator can easily move the instrument by hand in spite of its 9\,000-pound weight. The unique design of construction by Zeiss also counteracts the bending of the telescope due to gravity with counterweighted levers in the telescope’s tube and mounting. Such a system is said to be “stress compensated.” \nThe genesis of Griffith Observatory’s public telescope occurred when Griffith J. Griffith was invited to visit to Mount Wilson Observatory\, then home to the world’s largest operating telescope\, the 60-inch reflector. While there\, he was given the opportunity to view a celestial wonder through the telescope. Profoundly moved by the experience\, Griffith seized on the idea of constructing a public observatory with a telescope that could be used by all residents of Los Angeles. He specified in his will that the telescope was to be “at least 12-inches in diameter” and “complete in all its details” and was to be located “high and above the Hall of Science.” In 1931\, the Griffith Trust ordered the telescope from the Carl Zeiss Company of Jena\, Germany; the $14\,900 spent on the instrument was the first purchase of material for Griffith Observatory. \n\n \n2800 East Observatory Road\, Los Angeles\, CA 90027 \n\n \n\nGriffith Observatory is Southern California’s gateway to the cosmos! Visitors may look through telescopes\, explore exhibits\, see live shows in the Samuel Oschin Planetarium\, and enjoy spectacular views of Los Angeles and the Hollywood Sign. \nAll visitors must wear a face mask at all times while inside the Observatory and on the roof. By entering the building\, visitors are agreeing to follow this requirement. \nStarting November 29\, 2021\, visitors will also need to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination to enter. \n\nEveryone is Welcome\n\n\nGriffith Observatory is a free-admission facility located on the south side of Mount Hollywood in Griffith Park. The building and grounds are accessible for all visitors. The building is busiest on weekends\, during summer and holiday periods\, and at sunset. \nGriffith Observatory’s grounds and roads are generally open the same hours as Griffith Park\, 5:00 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.\, every day. Access to Griffith Park is free\, though there is paid parking closest to the Observatory. There are public restrooms located next to the Observatory parking lot. Trailheads on Observatory grounds lead to Mount Hollywood\, the Greek Theatre area\, and Fern Dell. \n \n\nDaily Programs\n\nWhether you experience the universe in the Samuel Oschin Planetarium\, observe the sky through a telescope\, explore the exhibits\, listen to a talk about the Tesla Coil\, or pose with the Hollywood Sign\, each day there’s something to engage and inspire you at Griffith Observatory. \n \n\nSamuel Oschin Planetarium\n\nTravel to the farthest reaches of the universe and into the microscopic building blocks of life. Live presentations immerse you in the wonder and meaning of the cosmos. \n \nCalendar\n\nAre you looking for latest discoveries about the universe\, what leading astronomers are saying\, or when Sun is at its highest point each day? SUMMARY:African American Firefighter Museum
DESCRIPTION:EVERY SUNDAY – Los Angeles\nVisit The African American Firefighter Museum! The African American Firefighter Museum is dedicated to promote diversity and to stand up for inequality against all races and genders. \nThe first floor contains vintage fire apparatus\, stories and pictures of pioneering African American Los Angeles Firefighters. The Museum gallery is located on the second floor with pictures\, artifacts and other memorabilia of African American Firefighters from around the country. \nOPEN EVERY SUNDAY FROM 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm\n \n\n\n1401 S Central Ave\, Los Angeles\, CA 90021 \n\nHISTORY\nThe AAFFM opened it’s doors as a Museum on December 13\, 1997. The dedication of the Museum also served as the acknowledgement of what was believed to be the city’s first 100 years of service by African American Firefighters (1897-1997). In 2002\, the Los Angeles Times contacted the AAFFM and stated they had discovered factual information to indicate the history started before 1897 with a man named Sam Haskins\, who was listed as the first Los Angeles Fireman of African decent when he was hired in 1892 and killed while responding to a fire in 1895. \nToday the Museum is open to the public and is strictly volunteer and donation driven. It is a 501 c(3) non-profit organization and it is available for use by organizations and individuals that desire to host events such as; meetings\, luncheons\, dinners\, banquets\, book signings\, film viewings\, jazz festivals\, social dances\, receptions and retreats. Our beloved historian\, 96 year old retired Firefighter Arnett Hartsfield\, who passed away in 2014 was our most cherished volunteer. As a Los Angeles Firefighter during the 1940s and 50’s he lead the integration of the Los Angeles Fire Department. As a graduate of USC law school\, he and his fellow firemen known as the Stentorians\, the NAACP and the local community were instrumental in successfully integrating the LAFD. The stories of the men that endured that horrific fight are told by the museum’s photographs\, paintings\, and artifacts. \nMISSION STATEMENT\nThe African American Fire Fighter Museum is dedicated to collecting\, conserving\,  and sharing the heritage of African American Fire Fighters through collaboration and education. \n\n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nwww.aaffmuseum.org\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

It is a 501(c)(3) corporation and has a volunteer Board of Directors\, who are nominated and elected by the membership at large. The Peninsula Neighborhood Association derives its effectiveness and strength from the diversity\, vitality and commitment of its membership\, as it pursues its goal of preserving the Peninsula’s unique quality of life in an ever-changing environment. \nNOW YOU CAN JOIN/RENEW MEMBERSHIP ONLINE HERE \nor \nDownload Membership Form. \n\nPENINSULA NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION\nThe Peninsula Neighborhood Association is a neighborhood organization open to all Peninsula residents\, whether property owners or renters\, for a per person annual fee of $25.00. It has a volunteer Board of Directors who are nominated and elected by the members of the Peninsula Neighborhood Association each November. \nThe Peninsula Neighborhood Association was incorporated in 1960 to oppose a plan by the City to replace the bayside beach with a sea wall\, as exists in Naples\, for private boat docks (thus the name Peninsula Neighborhood Association). Since winning that battle\, the Peninsula Neighborhood Association has been actively involved in preserving the Peninsula’s quality of life through sponsoring local events and activities\, as well as representing Peninsula residents before the City on matters that could affect our neighborhood. \nMISSION STATEMENT:\nTo protect and preserve the beaches along the Long Beach Peninsula for public usage and to ensure these beaches\nand community be maintained at the highest residential and recreational standards. \nHISTORY\nOne of the first structures on the Peninsula was an isolated duck hunting club located at the bayside end of what is now 61st Place. The club was established at the turn of the 19th to the 20th century. The first summer beach homes\, primarily owned by residents of Los Angeles and Pasadena\, were built in 1902-04. Owners of these summer homes were able to reach the Peninsula by means of an interurban electric train that ran from Los Angeles to Newport Beach. The train ran down the center of Ocean Boulevard the length of the Peninsula and then across a trestle connecting the east end of the Peninsula to Seal Beach. \n“The Pavilion\,” which at various times during its history served as an expensive restaurant and roller skating rink\, was established around 1910-12 at the oceanside end of 62nd Place\, which was then called Pier Avenue. Pier Avenue undoubtedly got its name from the pier that extended out into the ocean from The Pavilion. The Pavilion and its pier burned down a few years before a massive hurricane swept across the Peninsula in 1939\, destroying or causing significant damage to most structures throughout the Peninsula. \nThe Seaside Walk Boardwalk\, which was built in the ’20s\, is considered by residents to be a historical treasure. Attempts to replace it with concrete have been strongly opposed by Peninsula residents over the years and\, in the 1980s\, money was raised by residents to provide new surface boards (the City replaced the boards again in 2003). \nThe Peninsula has grown to encompass its current mix of single-family homes\, duplexes\, condominiums\, and apartments. Residents are a diverse group of families\, singles\, and senior citizens who have been residents for decades. The Peninsula continues to evolve\, while at the same time retaining its unique environment and lifestyle. \n\n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nlbpeninsula.org/summer-concert-series\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

When her father dies and the busy bodies come to reign her in\, Phil hits the road disguised as boy and meets another professor of ancient Greece (Charles Walcott)\, an avowed women-hater who takes a shine to Phil’s well-versed “twin.” Misperceptions and misunderstandings—orchestrated and otherwise—abound from there until love wins out—on Phil’s terms—in this charmingly subversive romantic comedy. \nDCP\, b&w\, silent\, 82 min. Director: Oscar Apfel. Screenwriters: Clara Beranger\, Forrest Halsey. With: Evelyn Greeley\, Charles Walcott\, James A. From the earliest silent films requiring variable speed projection all the way up to cutting-edge digital cinema\, the Wilder can accommodate an array of screen technologies. \n \nThe theater’s modern design by Michael Maltzan Architecture stylishly interprets cinema’s play of light and movement in real space\, and the 285-seat interior features comfortable leather seats with superb sightlines. The theater is made possible by a generous gift from Audrey L. Wilder and named in honor of Mrs. Wilder’s late husband\, the legendary screenwriter\, director and producer. Born on the outskirts of the Austro-Hungarian empire\, Billy Wilder fled Nazi Germany in the 1930s to become a master of Hollywood film language and a shrewd comic observer of the American scene. Among the many classics Wilder co-wrote and directed were Double Indemnity (1944)\, Sunset Boulevard (1950) and Some Like It Hot (1959). \n\nPlease note that food is not permitted inside the theater. There are dining options in the surrounding Westwood Village. You may also opt to bring your own food and eat in the courtyard just outside the theater. \n \n\nThe Hammer Museum champions the art and artists who challenge us to see the world in a new light\, to experience the unexpected\, to ignite our imaginations\, and inspire change. \nThe Hammer understands that art not only has the power to transport us through aesthetic experience but can also provide significant insight into some of the most pressing cultural\, political\, and social questions of our time.
