SUMMARY:Dockweiler Beach Fire Pits
DESCRIPTION:EVERY DAY ’til MIDNIGHT- Dockweiler State Beach\nThe Dockweiler Beach Fire Pits are located about 3 miles south of Playa del Rey\, this inviting beach features 3 miles of shoreline\, an RV park\, and over 2\,000 regular vehicle parking spaces. The wide sandy beach lies beneath the departures flight path of LAX\, offering fantastic belly views of airlines headed out over the Pacific. The lot entrance is at Vista del Mar and Imperial Highway. \n\n\nFIRE PITS RULES\n\n\n\n\n\nAny grills or BBQs must fit inside the fire pit\, which is 2′ wide. No grills\, grilling\, or flames or fires on the sand.\nTo use the fire pits\, you bring your own charcoal or wood and a way to light them.\nPlease do not use sand to put out the fire.\nHelp keep our beaches clean by preventing ashes or debris from falling into the sand.\n\n  \n\n\n\nThere’s no better way to end a fun day at the beach than to circle up around a cozy bonfire. Not all California beaches allow bonfires\, but here in the Marina del Rey area\, we’re lucky that Dockweiler State Beach does permit regulated burns in provided fire rings. Follow these tips to ensure your group has an enjoyable time. \n\nIf you want a pit\, arrive early. From May through September\, the pits are in high demand\, especially on the weekends\, and there are some diehards who arrive at dawn to claim their spots for the entire day. You cannot reserve fire pits as you would a campsite. Do not leave your pit unattended\, even for a quick dip in the ocean – if you do\, don’t be surprised to find another group has taken over the site. There are between 60 – 80 fire pits located just north and south of where Vista del Mar intersects with Imperial Highway. That sounds like a lot\, but consider that Dockweiler is also home to an RV park\, and you’re all competing for space.\nBring everything you need – wood\, s’mores\, snacks\, et cetera (see “Your Packing List” below).\nThe beach and all amenities close at midnight.\nBefore you leave\, snuff out the flame with water. Stir the embers after they are covered with water and make sure that everything is saturated. Do not use sand to distinguish the fire\, as it creates a mess for the next guest.\n\n \nYOUR PACKING LIST\n\nWood and charcoal (wood for that nice bonfire and charcoal for cooking – see below about barbecue rules). Both can be purchased at Ralph’s grocery stores: 4700 Admiralty Way\, Marina del Rey; 8701 Lincoln Boulevard\, Playa del Rey. Only burn clean wood (nothing treated with paint\, chemicals\, etc.) in the pits.\nFire starter and a lighter. You can purchase kindling from most any grocery\, home supply\, or sporting-goods store. Or\, prepare your own starter with this old-school camping craft: Fill a cardboard egg carton with dryer lint\, wood shavings\, paper shreds\, or other ignitable materials. Pour a small amount of melted candle wax into each cup to make things stay put. Break off cups individually and place into your wood stack. Light the cardboard cups and watch how easy your fire takes off – even in the wind.\nIf barbecuing\, note that large stand-up barbeques are NOT allowed on the sand or in the parking lots. However\, you can bring a low-profile version and place it inside the fire ring.\nLong-handle grilling sticks. These are great for cooking hot dogs and kabobs and roasting marshmallows.\nHot glove or mitt. Don’t ruin your night with a burn from handling hot wood\, pots\, or grills. Items like the Ove Glove offer protection while still allowing dexterity.\nFood! Doubt you’ll forget this\, but you may want a separate checklist so that you remember all the elements for your meal. It’s easy to overlook things like serving spoons\, plastic utensils\, salt and pepper\, napkins or wet wipes\, and containers for leftovers. Paper plates are great for cookouts since they’re ok to burn in the fire afterward.\nCamp/beach table. Depending on the size of your group\, you may prefer to set up your dinner fixings buffet style on a simple folding table. Whatever you bring\, remember that you’ll need to carry it across the sand to the pit and back to the parking lot at the end of your evening. So only take what you really need.\nYou’ll want a beverage cooler with ice\, especially if you heed our warning and arrive early in the day to claim your spot. A bag to hold discarded recyclables is a good idea\, too.\nComfort items. Ask each person in your group to bring his or her own beach chair or picnic blanket. Remind them that despite warm daytime temps\, the beach cools down a lot at night; having extra blankets and jackets is a smart move.\n\n  \n  \n  \nClick here to read beach rules and regulations at LA County Beaches including Dockweiler State Beach. \n  \nDOCKWEILER STATE BEACH PARKING INFORMATION\nParking at Dockweiler State Beach costs between $6 (weekday\, low season) and $13 (weekend\, high season) and there are no in/outs. If you leave the lot\, you must pay again to enter. The first 300 cars to arrive during weekdays pay a reduced rate of $3; during weekends and L.A. County holidays\, the reduced rate for the first 300 cars is $5. There is limited street parking on Vista del Mar\, but take note of the parking signage. Click for an interactive parking map with fees and times. \n  \nHours\nMonday – Sunday: 6:00 a.m.- 12:00 Midnight \n\nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nvisitmarinadelrey.com/dockweiler-state-beach\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

SUMMARY:The Broad Museum
DESCRIPTION:FREE TUE – SUN- Bunker Hill\, DTLA\n\n\n\n\nThe Broad Museum presents An in-depth installation of Andy Warhol\, opening May 26\, 2021\, features 26 works (11 on view for the first time at The Broad)\, including Mao (1973)\, 40 Gold Marilyns (1980)\, and a major new acquisition\, Liz [Early Colored Liz] (1963). \nLiz [Early Colored Liz] is a celebrated work featuring a silkscreened image of Elizabeth Taylor\, who represented both celebrity and beauty as well as tragedy for the artist. \nAn outcome of sustained and ongoing engagement with artists and artwork\, the Broad collection is distinctive in its exceptional dedication to the full arc of artists’ careers. The Broad has highlighted this depth through expansive presentations in the third floor galleries\, featuring Jean-Michel Basquiat\, Roy Lichtenstein\, Kara Walker\, Andy Warhol\, and Christopher Wool\, along with works by many others. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHighlighted Artwork\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n40 Gold Marilyns\n\nAndy Warhol\n\n\n1980\n\n\nsilkscreen ink and synthetic polymer paint on canvas\n\n\n80 x 111 in. Grand Avenue\, Los Angeles\, CA 90012\nThe Broad makes its collection of contemporary art from the 1950s to the present accessible to the widest possible audience by presenting exhibitions and operating a lending program to art museums and galleries worldwide. \nBy actively building a dynamic collection that features in-depth representations of influential contemporary artists and by advancing education and engagement through exhibitions and diverse public programming\, the museum enriches\, provokes\, inspires\, and fosters appreciation of art of our time. \n \nThe Broad was founded by philanthropists Eli and Edythe Broad on Grand Avenue in downtown Los Angeles. Designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro in collaboration with Gensler\, the museum offers free general admission and presents an active program of rotating temporary exhibitions and innovative audience engagement. The Broad is home to 2\,000 works of art in the Broad collection\, which is one of the world’s leading collections of postwar and contemporary art. \n  \n \nThe Broad from Home\nThe Broad is committed to inspiring and fostering an appreciation of contemporary art through our digital initiatives. Experience #TheBroadFromHome to find inspiration through music\, poetry\, performance\, workshops\, and conversations centered around the Broad collection. \nOverview \nPerformances \nTalks & Conversations \nArtist Spotlight \nFamily Art Workshops \nMore Online Programs \n  \nThe Broad Collection\nEli and Edythe Broad have been building their collection of postwar and contemporary art over the last 50 years. With a belief that the greatest art collections are built when the art is being made\, the Broads took to collecting art of their own time. \nThe Broad is home to 2\,000 works in the Broad collection by more than 200 artists\, and is one of the world’s leading collections of postwar and contemporary art. The collection features in-depth holdings of influential contemporary artists such as Jean-Michel Basquiat\, Mark Bradford\, Jasper Johns\, Jeff Koons\, Barbara Kruger\, Yayoi Kusama\, Kerry James Marshall\, Julie Mehretu\, Takashi Murakami\, Robert Rauschenberg\, Ed Ruscha\, Cindy Sherman\, Cy Twombly\, Andy Warhol\, and more\, plus an ever-growing representation of younger artists. \n  \nView Our Collection Here\n \nIn Under the Table\, 1994\, the viewer is both in the world of imaginary giants and in the world of remembered childhood. Fusing Alice in Wonderland with the Duchampian tradition of the readymade\, Artist Robert Therrien constructs a doppelganger from an everyday object\, both displaying his visual wit and actualizing literary or imaginative fantasy in three-dimensional space. The table exudes an extraordinary aura\, compelling one to walk underneath the table and conjuring the physical memory of being under the table of one’s childhood home. Complicated and powerful\, the work offers fresh ideas of what a table\, sculpture\, and memory can mean. \n  \n  \n \nUsing the recognizable form of a balloon twisted into the shape of a dog\, Koons has frozen a moment in time\, exaggerating both scale and material. \nBalloon Dog (Blue) is literal and abstract. When standing close to it\, one’s own distorted reflection bends around smooth pert curves. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\nGeneral Admission is Free\nAll visitors must reserve timed tickets in advance. Some exhibitions and events carry a separate charge. \n\n\n\n\n\nHours\nMonday: Closed\nTuesday – Wednesday: 11:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.\nThursday – Friday: 11:00 a.m.-8:00 p.m.\nSaturday: 10:00 a.m.-8:00p.m.\nSunday: 10:00 a.m.-6:00p.m. \n\n\n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nwww.thebroad.org\n \n  \nFind more

SUMMARY:The Abbey West Hollywood
DESCRIPTION:THE WORLD’S GREATEST GAY BAR – West Hollywood\nCome and join your friends at The Abbey\, welcoming you to a weekend of Pride celebrations! Sip on delicious cocktails\, dance the night away to our great music selection\, and enjoy a special Pride menu. Celebrating PRIDE is all about having a great time with friends and family! \n \nAfter nearly three decades in the business — an achievement in any industry but a unicorn-level rarity in the dining and nightlife scene — The Abbey is more than a dance club or restaurant. It’s a community center\, albeit one with sexy\, barely clad dancers\, 10-oz apple martinis\, and magical memories. \nThe weekly calendar includes Brunch Service on Saturdays\, All That ’90s on Tuesdays\, Ash WeHo\, Kink Thursdays\, and Sinful Fridays. The most popular day remains Sunday Funday when locals start showing up for brunch. By mid-afternoon\, there’s a line snaking down the block that’d make you think it’s on Saturday night. \nOn a typical weekday at The Abbey\, you’ll see parents with baby strollers coming from the park next door and guys in tank tops after a workout. That segues into the lunch crowd\, which eventually becomes the happy hour and dinner crowd. Around 9 p.m.\, the dancers — both guys and girls — come out. \nTHE ABBEY PRIDE WEEKEND\n \n\nTHE OWNER\n \nDavid Cooley\, hailing from Ohio and armed with a degree in Hotel Management from the University of Nevada\, Las Vegas\, packed up and moved out to Los Angeles in 1981. Pursuing a new career in finance\, Cooley was a stockbroker for two years before becoming a vice president at Wells Fargo Bank. \nShortly thereafter in 1991\, Cooley set out on his own and invested in a small\, discreet space in West Hollywood that he renovated into a coffeehouse called The Abbey.  After nearly twenty-five years and five expansions\, The Abbey is more than 14\,000 square feet and known as the Best Gay Bar in the World\, having won the award twice from Logo. \n \n  \n\nHours\nMonday – Friday: 11:00am – 2:00am\nSaturday – Sunday: 10:00am – 2:00am \n\n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nwww.theabbeyweho.com/weeklyevents\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

SUMMARY:Train Rides in Torrance
DESCRIPTION:EVERY 1st SUNDAY & 3rd SATURDAY- Wilson Park\, Torrance\nSouthern California Live Steamers provides mini-train rides on public run days every first Sunday of the month from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and every third Saturday of the month from noon to 3 p.m. All SCLS members are City of Torrance volunteers with annual fingerprint clearance and are not paid for their time expended on maintaining the trains and facility\, and providing the rides.Donations are appreciated. \n  \n \nIn 1987\, for the Torrance 75th anniversary event\, the City of Torrance asked SCLS if they could set up a small track on the back end of Wilson Park. At the time this was a vacant lot\, no trees and only weeds for vegetation. Considerable effort was expended by both the City and SCLS to prepare the area and lay the tracks necessary to run the trains. During the City’s 75th Anniversary Celebration in October 1987\, the free train rides were so well received by the public that the City sought to have SCLS run the trains on a regular basis. On May 11\, 1990\, the City and SCLS entered into a 25-year License Agreement allowing SCLS to provide free train rides at Wilson Park on a regular basis. A new home was found! \nANOTHER 25 YEARS \nThe mini-train rides have become a popular feature of Wilson Park. Originally\, free train rides were offered once a month on the first Sunday of each month. Today\, SCLS provides free train rides twice a month on the first Sunday and third Saturday of each month\, and on special occasions. The City and SCLS entered into another 25-year lease agreement thru May 11\, 2040. \nSouthern California Live Steamers\, Inc. operates as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization under IRS rules and is a registered California non-profit corporation. All of the income for the operation of SCLS is derived by donations from its members\, passengers and corporate sponsors\, and thru fundraisers. SCLS does not charge the passengers for rides on public run days\, though donations are accepted from our riders on public run days which is on the 1st Sunday and 3rd Saturday of each month. Funds received are used to pay SCLS expenses such as insurance\, maintenance costs\, facility upgrades\, fuel\, track repairs\, future track projects\, and other expenses. All SCLS members are City of Torrance volunteers and are not paid for their time expended on club projects or operations. \nmers \n  \nHours\n3rd Saturdays: 12:00pm – 3:00pm\n1st Sundays: 11:00am – 3:00pm \n\nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nhttps://www.torranceca.gov/\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

SUMMARY:FOWLER MUSEUM: How Do You See This World?
DESCRIPTION:NOW AND EXTENDED THROUGH NOVEMBER 20- Westwood Village\, UCLA\nThe Fowler Museum at UCLA presents\n‘How Do You See This World?’: The Art Of Almighty God\n \n‘How Do You See This World?’ is a retrospective of paintings by the prolific Ghanaian artist Kwame Akoto (b. 1950). Addressed as “Almighty” by friends and acquaintances\, Akoto is the owner of Almighty God Art Works in the city of Kumasi\, the capital of the Asante kingdom. His studio\, established in 1972\, produced signs for small businesses\, cloth banners for evangelical events\, and tin portraits for grave monuments. As the market for such works shrank\, Akoto turned his attention to another part of his practice\, which he calls “creativity arts”—the focus of the current exhibition. These pictures are produced largely for an international clientele and range in subjects from portraiture to Christian themes to commentaries on the world’s problems. Almighty continued to apply his sign-writing skills in the form of extensive texts added to his paintings and their frames. Nearly every piece in the exhibition combines image and text\, an interplay characteristic of Akan arts of southern Ghana. The universe of themes in Almighty’s repertoire continues to expand as he widens the scope of his commentaries on the human condition. His recognition has also grown: since 1995\, he has been included in at least thirty exhibitions of contemporary African art outside of Ghana: in Italy\, Poland\, Netherlands\, France\, Denmark\, Portugal\, and the U.S. His works are held in museums and private collections worldwide. \n  \n\n\n308 Charles E. Young Dr N\, Los Angeles\, CA 90024 \n\nFREE EVERY DAY! @ UCLA\nThe Fowler Museum at UCLA explores global arts and cultures with an emphasis on works from Africa\, Asia\, the Pacific\, and the Americas—past\, and present. The Fowler enhances understanding and appreciation of the diverse peoples\, cultures\, and religions of the world through dynamic exhibitions\, publications\, and public programs\, informed by interdisciplinary approaches and the perspectives of the cultures represented. \nAlso featured is the work of international contemporary artists presented within the complex frameworks of politics\, culture\, and social action. \nFowler Museum at UCLA provides exciting\, informative\, and thought-provoking exhibitions and events for the UCLA community and the people of greater Los Angeles and beyond. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nAreas of the Collection\n\n\n\n\nARTS OF AFRICA AND THE AFRICAN DIASPORA\n \nOne of the largest and finest in the United States\, and one of the top twenty African collections worldwide\, this collection offers a superb representation of the arts of many African nations\, including objects from Senegal\, Nigeria\, Ghana\, Cameroon\, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire)\, Kenya\, Zambia\, and South Africa. The Yoruba collection alone is one of the three finest in the world. It contains a spectacular array of beaded objects\, including a majestic throne\, elaborate chiefly gowns and sophisticated divination regalia. \nA collection of post-apartheid election materials and contemporary South African art is being developed\, as are a number of collections of popular urban arts from countries including Tanzania and Muslim Senegal. Recently\, more than 400 textiles made by the Kuba peoples of the Democratic Republic of the Congo were gifted by the Christensen Foundation. \nThe collection represents some of the finest examples of men’s embroidered raffia pile cloths and women’s appliqué cloths. This collection complements already significant holdings of West African textiles from countries such as Mali and Ghana\, including kente and adinkra cloth and Asafo flags. The museum also has significant holdings of arts from the African Americas\, and notable arts from Haitian Vodou\, Brazil\, and Suriname. \n\n\n\nARTS OF THE AMERICAS\n\n\n \nThese holdings include a comprehensive collection of pre-Columbian ceramics with the best representations from West Mexico\, the Valley of Mexico\, and pre-Columbian Peru (with special strengths in the art of the Moche). The Fowler also possesses a cohesive collection of Guatemalan costumes; an extensive collection of Mexican clothing; textiles of Peru; and a comprehensive representation of field-collected market materials from Michoacan\, Mexico. Complementing the pre-Columbian collections are field collections of the Warao and Yecuana Indians of the Orinoco Delta of Venezuela and contemporary Latin American popular arts including Mexican trees of life\, Day of the Dead figures\, and masks from Metepec\, Oaxaca\, Michoacan\, Jalisco\, Puebla\, and Guanajuato. \nNative American materials from the U.S. and Canada are a small but significant part of the collection. Materials from the United States and Canada include well-known Northwest Coast material\, as well as a notable cross section of late nineteenth-century Inuit art and material culture. \n\n\n\nARTS OF ASIA AND THE PACIFIC\n\n\n \nThe Fowler Museum at UCLA collections from Insular Southeast Asia\, including Indonesia\, the Philippines\, Malaysia\, and aboriginal Taiwan\, are among the strongest in the United States. The Indonesian and Philippine textiles reinforce the Fowler Museum’s standing as a major repository for the textile arts. Also included are significant collections of sculptural material from Sumatra\, Borneo\, Sulawesi\, and Luzon\, puppetry from Java and Bali\, basketry from Indonesia and the Philippines\, and metalwork from the Philippines. The primary strength of the Pacific collections lies in materials from Papua New Guinea\, especially the Papuan Gulf\, Trobriand Islands\, Sepik River\, and Maprik region. Australia and Polynesia are also represented by sizeable collections\, including 45 rare Maori cloaks. \nThe collections from mainland Asia are smaller but growing rapidly\, due to current collecting priorities. A collection of betel-chewing paraphernalia\, representing several countries in South and Southeast Asia\, is considered one of the finest in the world. Other holdings include textiles from Bhutan\, Pakistan\, India\, and Japan\, baskets and decorative arts from Japan\, puppetry from China\, Thailand\, India\, and Turkey\, and art and artifacts from Nepal. \n\n\n\nARCHAEOLOGICAL COLLECTIONS\n\n\n \nThe Fowler Museum at UCLA also serves as a repository for archaeological collections acquired during research conducted by UCLA faculty\, staff\, students\, and other professional archaeologists. Documentation of the collections includes artifact catalogs\, excavation notes\, maps\, and photographs. These collections serve primarily as an archive for teaching and research. The Museum is compliant with guidelines mandated by the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) and has been signaled out by the State of California for its exemplary efforts. \nArchaeological collection areas include: \nCalifornia \nCollections from approximately 1100 sites\, mostly in Southern California. \nSouthwest \nSignificant collections from the Rainbow Bridge-Monument Valley Expedition of 1933-1938 and several Parowan Fremont sites in Utah were excavated in the 1950s\, and other Anasazi and Hohokam sites. \nMexico \nIncludes objects from 218 sites\, mostly in western and central Mexico. \nSudan \nThe Nubian/Egyptian fortress site at Askut is the source of approximately 60\,000 artifacts excavated by UCLA archaeologist Alexander Badawy in conjunction with the Aswan High Dam Salvage Campaign\, 1962-1964. \nOld World stone tool collection \nIncludes tools from Europe and the Middle East. \n\n\nMUSEUM HOURS\n\nAdmission is FREE \nMonday – Tuesday: closed\nWednesday – Sunday: 12:00 pm – 5:00 pm \n\n\nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nfowler.ucla.edu\n \n\n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

SUMMARY:Watch a Free Polo Match
DESCRIPTION:SATURDAYS AND SUNDAYS- Pacific Palisades\nThe horses are running again at the Will Rodgers Polo Club. Come and enjoy watching matches most Saturdays & Sundays. Check the clubs calendar HERE for other private events. \nThe matches are free to watch\, however parking is paid at the Will Rogers State Park Daily Parking Fee: winter $4 – $9\, summer $4 – $15 \n \n  \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n1501 Will Rogers State Park Rd\, Pacific Palisades\, CA 90272 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Polo Club\nThe Will Rogers Polo Field is the Only Remaining Polo Field in Los Angeles County California. \n\n\n\n\nWill made his home in Beverly Hills during the early twenties. In 1922 Will bought the property above Sunset Boulevard commanding a view of western Los Angeles\, Santa Monica and the Pacific Ocean\, where he built a small weekend cottage. In 1926\, he built a polo field on the land. In 1928 Will\, his wife Betty\, and their three children – Will Jr.\, Mary\, and Jimmy – moved to the ranch\, and the home was enlarged to it’s present size of thirty-one rooms. \n \nToday\, the grounds and the ranch buildings are maintained as they were when the family lived here. His ranch reflects his roots in horsemanship\, starting with the polo field\, which is the first thing you see when you look south from the parking area. The field is the only outdoor polo field in Los Angeles county. Featured in many movies and TV shows\, the polo field features a gentle slope that forms an area for viewing the polo action. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nUp from the parking area are the ranch buildings\, including the visitor center\, which once the ranch guest house. The visitor center features a film on the life of Will Rogers\, literature and an audio tour of the grounds. The ranch buildings and grounds are maintained as they were when the Rogers family lived there in the late 1920s and 1930s. But the park is more than just an historic site\, it’s also a working ranch. The park still retains many of the western equestrian activities that were a part of Will Rogers’ life. Up the hill from the main guest ranch\, above the green expanse of lawn\, are the stables\, which have recently been renovated. \n \nIf you come out and watch our games\, be aware that an enormous amount of “behind the scenes” preparation has made this event possible. Each player has two to four horses; which require feeding\, cleaning and daily exercise during the week preceding each game. Most of the players board their horses elsewhere\, which means that earlier in the day\, they trailered their horses to the park for the game. The horses are then brushed and “tacked up” in their special saddles\, bridle and leg protection wraps. The players dress in their white joudhpers\, team shirts\, boots\, knee guards and riding spurs. Between chukkers (periods of play)\, players and grooms\, frantically change horses and adjust their tack. A thousand details can go wrong (and often do)! But\, at that sublime moment when the mallet touches the ball\, it all seems gloriously worthwhile. \nHours\nSaturday: 2:00pm – 4:00pm\nSunday: 10:00am – 1:00pm \n\n\n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nhttps://willrogerspolo.com/calendar/\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

SUMMARY:Hammer Museum Free Screening: Islands / You and the Night
DESCRIPTION:TONIGHT- The Hammer Museum\nThe Hammer Museum and the UCLA Film & Television Archive present a free screening of \n\nIslands / You and the Night\nSAT AUG 20\, 7:30 PM\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPart of the UCLA Film & Television Archive series Outfest UCLA Legacy Project. Register at cinema.ucla.edu to attend this in-theater screening. \n\n\n\n\n\nISLANDS\n\nLes îles\, France\, 2017 \nWinner of the Queer Palm for Best Short Film at the 2017 edition of the Cannes Film Festival\, Islands sees characters wandering through an erotic maze of love and desire. \nDCP\, color\, in French with English subtitles\, 23 min. Director/Screenwriter: Yann Gonzalez. Cinematographer: Simon Beaufils. Editor: Raphaël Lefèvre. With: Sarah-Megan Allouch\, Mathilde Mennetrier\, Alphonse Maîtrepierre\, Romain Merle. Courtesy of Altered Innocence. \n\n\n\n\n\nYOU AND THE NIGHT\n\nLes rencontres d’après minuit\, France\, 2013 \nIn his first feature-length film after a substantial effort in short-form filmmaking\, Nice-born writer-director Yann Gonzalez riffs on character tropes à la The Breakfast Club with a sexy and markedly queer twist\, underscored by the synthpop music of M83\, Yann’s brother Anthony’s band. A longtime couple and their trans maid assemble a motley crew\, including The Slut\, The Teen\, The Stud and The Star\, for another of the trio’s frequent orgies. To everyone’s initial chagrin and eventual shared catharsis\, a theater of the pansexual absurd\, fueled by a collective hallucination\, unfolds as a dreamlike tableaux of memories instead of the suck-and-f*ck they all showed up for. A tribute to the power of chosen families and the possibilities offered by pure cinematic imagination. \nDCP\, color\, in French with English subtitles\, 92 min. Director/Screenwriter: Yann Gonzalez. From the earliest silent films requiring variable speed projection all the way up to cutting-edge digital cinema\, the Wilder can accommodate an array of screen technologies. \n \nThe theater’s modern design by Michael Maltzan Architecture stylishly interprets cinema’s play of light and movement in real space\, and the 285-seat interior features comfortable leather seats with superb sightlines. The theater is made possible by a generous gift from Audrey L. Wilder and named in honor of Mrs. Wilder’s late husband\, the legendary screenwriter\, director and producer. Born on the outskirts of the Austro-Hungarian empire\, Billy Wilder fled Nazi Germany in the 1930s to become a master of Hollywood film language and a shrewd comic observer of the American scene. Among the many classics Wilder co-wrote and directed were Double Indemnity (1944)\, Sunset Boulevard (1950) and Some Like It Hot (1959). \n\nPlease note that food is not permitted inside the theater.
