Ruby’s journal entries\, recounted in voiceover\, provide a loose throughline to her episodic experiences\, warily building new relationships—some supportive\, some not—on the way to leaving the past behind and discovering herself on her own terms. A pioneering regional filmmaker\, writer-director Victor Nunez tells Ruby’s story through quiet rhythms of drift and reflection\, intune with Ruby’s new hometown\, itself a liminal space of seasonal workers and tourists\, lives all heading somewhere else. \n(1993\, dir. Victor Nunez\, 35mm\, color\, 114 min.) \n\n\n\n\n\nSTRANGE WEATHER\n\nShot on the Fisher Price Pixelvision toy camera that used audio cassettes for tape\, Strange Weather chronicles the daily lives of four listless crack addicts hanging out in a Miami apartment at the onset of a hurricane. This is a different spin on neorealism: many who viewed it thought it was pure documentary\, even though Peggy Ahwesh adapted it from co-director Margie Strosser’s stories of her sister’s down-and-out life. The cast members—including noted filmmaker Cheryl Dunye—don’t play themselves per se\, so one could say it’s a fiction based on truth. But amidst the gray swirl of the toy camera’s video snow\, lies a direct path to the tragic lives it depicts. \n(1993\, dir. What follows is pure delight as the actors’ attempt to incorporate ever more fanciful suggestions. This rarely performed comedy written by a friend of Shakespeare’s is a wild joyride of a play and a love letter to the theatrical invention. Perfect for family audiences. \nThis Years New Location\nDue to ongoing construction at our usual site\, this season’s Festival site is at the Dell at the top of the Old Zoo. It’s the same lovely location where we presented The Tempest in 2021\, but it is considerably smaller than our usual site on the main lawn of the Old Zoo. The Dell has a capacity of 450 audience members so we are requiring registration. (Registration is free! All events are admission-free!) \nUnlike last year\, there are no reserved pods. Seating is open General Admission\, first come\, first served. The Griffith Park Merry-Go-Round is a nostalgia-inducing gem that\, much like Disneyland\, is still enjoyed by the young and the young-at-heart decades after its inception. The small carousel\, which is tucked away into a quiet corner of the park\, served as Walt Disney’s inspiration for Disneyland. When his children were young\, Walt\, a Los Feliz denizen\, took them to the merry-go-round on weekends. During one visit\, while sitting on a bench watching his kids circle round and round\, he was inspired to create a large scale gathering site that the whole family could enjoy. His dream was realized on July 17\, 1955\, when Disneyland opened to the public. \n \n  \nClassic Car Show with a little coffee and some amazing automobiles\nLast Sunday of every month\n  \n \nCars & Coffee Los Angeles was founded to bring together like-minded automotive\, photography\, and design enthusiasts. DESCRIPTION:LAST SUNDAY OF THE MONTH- Redondo Beach\n\n\nLearn to surf for free with the Surf for Keenan Foundation- Redondo Beach. Join us for a day of surfing and friends. All are welcome from beginner too advanced.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMeet us on the beach in front of Perry’s Café and Beach Rental.We will have a large blue tent with a “Surf for Keenan” sign. All are welcome whether if it’s your first time surfing\, part of your daily routine\, or don’t surf at all. We will teach you the basics of surf if it’s your first time. If you don’t surf\, we’ll have coffee\, so come hang out on the beach with new friends. \nBring water\, a snack\, surfboard\, and a wetsuit or swimsuit depending on the weather. \n  \n \nIf you don’t have a board or wetsuit\, please contact Dive N’ Surf at 310-372-8423 to rent equipment. If you can’t pickup your equipment morning of\, tell them you are with the Surf for Keenan event and we will pickup your equipment for you and have it ready for you to learn to surf. \n  \n \nSurf for Keenan is a non profit empowering those in recovery to reach their full potential through community\, education\, and financial support. \n\nEnvision a world where all young people have the resources they need to thrive in recovery from addiction to drugs and alcohol. DESCRIPTION:EVERY SUNDAY- in Historic Leimert Park\n\n\n\nEvery Sunday 10 am – 5 pm.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Leimert Park African Marketplace and Drum Circle takes park every Sunday in Leimert Park Village along Degnan Boulevard between 43rd Place and 43rd Street. \n\n  \n \n\nFor more than 25 yearsthe African Drum Circles & African American street vendors have been a mainstay of Leimert Park. The weekly event is celebration of Black culture\, art\, music and dance. \n\n  \n \n\nWeekly crowds come to support Black owned businesses and try the flavors from around the globe. The village is one of the most prominent Black cultural spaces in Los Angeles\, and it is a symbol of Black life in this city. \n  \n \n\n\nEverySunday from 3:00pm until dusk the African beats of the drums can be heard throughout the neighborhood. Drummers of all ages and skill levels are welcome to participate in this exciting community event. Leimert Park has been a meeting place for the people of Los Angeles for at least since the early 80s. \nThe drum circles feature musical styles from across the African continent\, with local drummers join with others coming from various parts of Africa\, Latin America\, the Caribbean islands.
