A fantastic group of artists & dancers who work with LED Hula Hoops and other LED apparatus they can spin\, toss\, throw in the air\, etc. \n\n Very friendly and talented peeps.  \n \nCelebrating our love of  the FLOW at Glow Flow Santa Monica!\n\n\n\n\nHow to Capture the Glow Flow Moment\nIf spin isn’t your thing\, how about photography. Here are different ways to shoot Glow Flow Santa Monica. \nGOLDEN HOUR / BLUE HOUR\nYou can shoot available light for images of the artists. \nSLOW SHUTTER SPEED\nAs Glow Flow gets dark\, you can use a slow shutter speed to let the moving LED devices draw amazing “spirograph” shapes with light against the night sky. \nSLOW SYNC\nYou can combine both elements with slow sync or rear sync. A long shutter speed captures traces from LED Hula Hoops and then your on-or-off-camera flash lights the artist. \nTHE BEST FLASH?\nI haven’t had the best results with built-in pop-up flash. I like using an external flash in the hot-shoe. At Glow Flow\, We often say that having flash off the hot-shoe produces better lighting. For me\, in this case\, I think there’s so much going on\, that hot-shoe mounted flash works well. You could bring a light stand and battery powered strobe which might look great but seems like a lot of gear. \nTRIPOD?\nIf you use flash\, it will freeze the artist\, and the point-light-sources of the LEDs effectively freeze themselves\, so you can shoot this handheld. However\, you will get crisper images if you use a tripod. \nBRACKET\, BRACKET\, BRACKET!\nAs you can imagine\, dialing in your exposure can be a bit complicated! Plan to try a variety of different shutter speeds to see what works with the LEDs. DESCRIPTION:KIDS UNDER 12 FREE- Long Beach\nThe Long Beach Museum of Art (LBMA) was founded in 1950 as a municipal art center for the city of Long Beach. Since its inception\, the Museum has been housed in the historic 1911 Elizabeth Milbank Anderson House. In 1957\, the Anderson House was designated as the Long Beach Museum of Art\, at which time the Museum began acquiring a permanent collection.\nIn 1977\, the Museum was honored with accreditation by the American Association of Museums\, which it has since maintained. Since 1986\, the Long Beach Museum of Art Foundation has managed the Museum\, governed by a Board of Trustees. In 2000\, the Museum completed a restoration of the historic residence and constructed a new two-story exhibition pavilion (in 2015 the pavilion was renamed the Hartman Pavilion). Since then\, the Museum has offered diverse and compelling exhibitions\, which has resulted in increased visitors and program attendance. \n  \n \nThe Museum’s permanent collection is diverse with more than 3\,200 works encompassing 300 years of American and European art in all media. Highlights from the collection include furniture by Charles and Ray Eames\, ceramics by Beatrice Wood\, and sculptures by Claire Falkenstein\, George Rickney and Peter Voulokos; Early 20th Century European Modernist paintings by Vasily Kandinsky\, Alexej Jawlensky and others from the Milton Wichner Collection; and contemporary artists such as James Jean\, Sherrie Wolf\, and Sandow Birk whose paintings have recently been added to the collection. \nSince 1951\, exhibitions presented by the Museum have been varied with shows ranging from individual artists to specific types of art. DESCRIPTION:3 WEEK CHROMEBOOK & HOTSPOT LOANS- Los Angeles County Libraries\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBorrow a Chromebook and Wi-Fi hotspot to access the internet.\n\n\nYou can now checkout a Google Chromebook and Wireless Hotspot for 3 weeks\, from any Los Angeles County Library Sidewalk Service FREE! Do you know anyone without internet or a computer at home who would benefit from borrowing them—to apply for jobs\, access homeschooling resources\, or simply stay connected to information? \nYou can now check out a kit with a Chromebook and wireless hotspot to access the internet (plus chargers) inside a handy carrying case\, from any Sidewalk Service location. \nPlease call any Sidewalk Service location to place a hold on a Laptop & Hotspot Loan Kit. Borrow for 3 weeks\, with the option to renew\, if available. \nPlease note: Laptop & Hotspot Loan Kits require a full access card to check out. Call your nearest Sidewalk Service location for details about signing up or upgrading your digital card. \nFunding for this project has been provided by the Coronavirus Aid\, Relief\, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFrequently Asked Questions\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n1. Who can check out a Chromebook kit?\nAdults with a standard adult library card in good standing will be able to check out a Chromebook kit at a participating library.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n2. How do I check out a Chromebook kit?\nRequests for Chromebook kits can be made using our online catalog or over the phone\, like any of our other materials. At this time requests are site-specific and can only be placed at libraries offering the service (listed above). Call a library offering the service to arrange a same-day checkout\, if kits are available.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n3. When can I pick up my Laptop & Hotspot?\nCall the owning library and arrange to pick up your kit during Sidewalk Service hours.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n4. How long can I keep the Laptop & Hotspot Loan? Can I renew?\nThe kits can be borrowed for 3 weeks. If no other customers are on the waiting list\, the checkout can be renewed up to 3 times. The renewal needs to be made before your checkout period ends.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n5. How do I return the Chromebook Kit?\nChromebooks must be returned in person to the owning library during Sidewalk Service hours. They cannot be returned in the bookdrop. They cannot be returned to any library other than the one where the kit was checked out. Please call the owning library to arrange a drop-off time and call again once at the library to alert staff. Staff will bring out a box labeled Laptop Return to the Sidewalk Service table. You’ll be instructed to remove all items – the Chromebook\, the wireless hotspot\, and both charging cables – from the carrying case. Put the case into the box first\, on the bottom\, and then put all other items in on top. Staff will check the box to make sure all items are inside and that they look fine. All items will be quarantined for 4 days and confirmed to be working properly before being checked in. Staff will contact you if there are any questions or concerns. Please remember that the loan will still show on your account until the quarantine and check-in process is complete.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n6. Are there late fees?\nLate fees will be assessed the same as all other library materials. The Chromebook will become disabled once the loan period has ended.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n7. Will I be charged if the Chromebook is damaged while in my possession? How much?\nYes\, fees will depend on the type of damage.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n8. Will my documents stay on the Chromebook after I return it?\nAll documents are deleted once the Chromebook is shut down. This will happen even during your 3-week checkout period\, so we advise you to back up your documents on a flash drive or in Google Docs if you are working on something you want to keep.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n9. What programs will be included on the Chromebook?\n\n\nAdobe Acrobat Reader\nDocuSign\nGoogle Calendar\nGoogle Drive/Docs\nSkype\nWordPress\nInternet\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n10. Does the Chromebook include the internet?\nA wireless hotspot device is included when you check out the Chromebook. This will give you access to the internet.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n11. I don’t have a printer. Can I print things through the library?\nYes\, you can use our Wi-Fi printing service on the borrowed Chromebook and send your documents wirelessly to any library that offers Sidewalk Service.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n12. Will library staff provide an orientation on the technology when I check it out?\nA basic instruction sheet will be provided explaining how to turn on and connect the equipment. If you have further questions\, please call your local library.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n13. I am not good with computers. Will Library staff help me use the Chromebook or answer technical questions?\nLibrary staff is able to provide basic help with your computer—like how to turn it on\, connect the wireless hotspot\, or how to locate programs. For help\, please call your local library.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nReceive immediate\, unlimited\, and free access to LA County Library’s online resources\,\nincluding eBooks and audiobooks\, movie and TV streaming\, and music downloads. Your Digital Library Card also gives you the ability to place holds and check out 3 physical items from the library at a time. Digital Cards cannot check out a Laptop & Hotspot Loan kit. You may call any Sidewalk Service location and schedule an appointment to get a full access card\, or upgrade an existing Digital Library Card. The Digital Library Card is available to residents of Los Angeles County\, ages 18 and over. You will need to cross the street and take the steps up to the East Trailhead map sign. \n​ \nUpon arrival\, each participant signs the liability form and the roster. \nYou will have the choice to join a Hike Leader to have a “respectful-distanced” mindful hike experience\, or you may take a self-guided hike. Your Hike Leader will hold space for introductions and mindful pauses during your hike towards the yoga location. Be prepared to say your name\, where you reside\, and your take on the theme of the week. This 2021 Season we will be debuting the Hummingbird trail (Park to Playa trail + Bowl loop)\, which is more flat and takes you through a beautiful hummingbird garden. DESCRIPTION:OPEN WEEKENDS- Mt Wilson\nMount Wilson Observatory is located on the summit of Mount Wilson above Pasadena at an altitude of 5715 feet. Mount Wilson Observatory is visible from much of the Los Angeles area. Free of charge\, this is a must see experience. \n  \n \n\n\nViewing through the 100-Inch Hooker Telescope\nThe world’s largest telescope from 1917 to 1949\, the 100-inch Telescope forever changed our understanding of the scale and nature of our Universe and launched a revolution in astronomy that continues through today. This world-heritage class instrument\, used by many of the greatest astronomers of the Twentieth Century\, has only recently been made available for regular public viewing. It is the largest telescope in the world that you can rent! Imagine looking through the telescope used by astronomers Edwin Hubble and Milton Humason in the late 1920s to measure the expansion of the Universe. \n\n  \n \nThe 60 inch Telescope\nMount Wilson Observatory’s 60-inch telescope was completed in 1908 by Observatory founder George Ellery Hale with funding from Andrew Carnegie. It was the world’s largest operational telescope until Hale went on to complete the Mt. Wilson 100-inch telescope in 1917. For a more detailed history of this revolutionary instrument\, which became the model for all large observatory telescopes of the future\, see the article “Building the 60-inch Telescope.” Among the many important discoveries from the 60-inch telescope was Harlow Shapley’s revelation in 1918 that the accepted view of the time\, that our Sun was near the center of the Milky Way Galaxy\, was wrong. Shapley used the light gathering power of the 60-inch to show that our solar system is instead half way out toward the edge of our Galaxy. The telescope was a workhorse instrument for astronomy for over half a century and used by astronomical luminaries such as Edwin Hubble\, Walter Baade\, and Allan Sandage to unravel the secrets of stars and galaxies. Now retired from active scientific service\, the 60-inch and the 100-inch telescopes are the largest in the world made exclusively available to the public. With their large light-collecting mirrors and the exquisite skies over Mount Wilson\, these historic telescopes provide an unrivaled and unique astronomical experience. \n\n\n\n\n\nCHARA (Center for High Angular Resolution Astronomy)\nMount Wilson’s newest astronomical instruments are Georgia State University’s optical interferometric array of six telescopes. This facility\, located here because of the exceptional seeing conditions\, puts Mount Wilson back on the cutting edge of astrophysics. The full array was completed in 2004. Each telescope of the CHARA Array has a light-collecting mirror 1-meter in diameter. The telescopes are dispersed over the mountain to provide a two-dimensional layout that provides the resolving capability (but not the light collecting ability!) of a single telescope a fifth of a mile in diameter. Light from the individual telescopes is conveyed through vacuum tubes to a central Beam Synthesis Facility in which the six beams are combined together. When the paths of the individual beams are matched to an accuracy of less than one micron\, after the light traverses distances of hundreds of meters\, the Array then acts like a single coherent telescope for the purposes of achieving exceptionally high angular resolution. The Array is capable of resolving details as small as 200 micro-arcseconds\, equivalent to the angular size of a nickel seen from a distance of 10\,000 miles. In terms of the number and size of its individual telescopes\, its ability to operate at visible and near infrared wavelengths\, and its longest baselines of 330 meters\, the CHARA Array is arguably the most powerful instrument of its kind in the world. \nScience Objectives\nThe Array is applicable to problems in almost all areas of contemporary astronomy. It is particularly suited to stellar astrophysics where it will be used to measure the diameters\, distances\, masses\, and luminosities of stars\, as well as to image features such as spots and flares on their surfaces. Other projects range from detecting planetary systems\, imaging stars in process of formation\, and studies of bright transient phenomena like novae. \nFor more information on this amazing research facility and the science that is emerging from it\, please go to the CHARA array homepage. There you can find a video\, Sizing up the Stars\, that explains how interferometry works. \n\n\n\n \nAstronomical Museum\nAlso on the mountain\, next to the 100-inch telescope\, there is a new exhibit hall that displays Albert Michelson’s original interferometer\, used to get the first measurement of stars other than our Sun.  The exhibit hall reveals in detail how the light is combined in the new CHARA area. \nWeekend Public Guided Tours\n\n\n\n\n\nDocent-led walking tours of the observatory take place on Saturdays and Sundays through November 29. The two hour tours depart at 11:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. sharp from the Cosmic Cafe located above the large parking lot at the entrance to the Observatory. A special feature of these tours is entrance into both the 60-inch and 100-inch telescope domes\, as well as the observing room of the 150-foot Solar Tower Telescope.  On rare occasions\, a telescope may be closed to the tour due to a special event or maintenance. \n\n\nPurchasing Tickets \nTickets are $15 (adults) and $13 (ages 12 and under & 62 and older). Tour tickets are available for same-day purchase at the Cosmic Café\, and rarely sell out. For each tour\, 15 spots are available. \nIf you have a large group\, we urge you to opt for a private tour instead. These can be arranged by sending an email request to tours@mtwilson.edu. \nChildren under age 6 are not permitted. The tours involve about a mile of walking and climbing some stairs. Please read the Health Notice in the information tab. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPrivate Group Tours\nPrivate guided tours may be arranged by individuals or groups in advance. Written by Hal McAlister\, the second director of the Mount Wilson Institute and founder of CHARA\, it is a well-illustrated guide to all the points of interest on the mountaintop. \n\n\n\n\nElevation Warning\nThe high elevation of the Observatory (5715 ft) and the change in elevation during the approximately one-mile and two-hour long tour are unsuitable for individuals with respiratory and heart problems or with limited mobility. \nThe century-old facilities are not ADA-compliant and\, except for the Astronomical Museum and the Cosmic Cafe\, offer no access to those who cannot climb multiple flights of stars. Thus\, tours of the Observatory\, either guided or unguided\, are inappropriate for some elderly people and for those who are not in good health. \nVisitors should take these factors into consideration before touring the Observatory. \n\n\n\nParking\n\n\n\nA U.S. Forest Service Adventure Pass is required to park at the Observatory\, as it is located on U.S. Forest Service land. A day pass may be purchased at the Cosmic Cafe (when it is open from April 4 to November 29 in 2020) on weekends between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Other times\, the $5 day pass or the $30 dollar annual pass may be purchased at many locations around Los Angeles before you head up.  Click here to go to the U.S. Forest Service website for more information about the Adventure Pass and where to buy them. SUMMARY:UCLA Meteorite Collection
DESCRIPTION:FREE WEEKDAYS- UCLA Westwood Village\nThe UCLA Collection of Meteorites is the largest on the West Coast and contains over 2500 samples from about 1500 different meteorites. It is the fifth largest collection of meteorites in the United States and the second largest housed at a university. \n  \n \nOur collection includes the main masses of about 40 meteorites and the type specimens of more than 300 meteorites collected from hot deserts; 60 of these are iron meteorites. Eighty of these meteorite type specimens are from the state of California. These were collected by local citizens during the past few decades\, mainly from the playas (dry lakes) scattered around the Mojave Desert. \n  \n \nSome of our meteorites are large and well suited for exhibits (in fact\, some of them are exhibited at the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History). However\, most of the samples are small and mainly of value for research. \n  \n  \n \nThe study of meteorites and the processes that formed them is called cosmochemistry. The cosmochemists at UCLA are among the most productive university researchers in the world. It is thus appropriate that we have one of the best university meteorite collections. \n  \nWe are in the second year of operating a Meteorite Gallery\, located in room 3697 of the Geology Building. Opened in January 2014\, the Gallery is open to the public weekdays from 9 am to 4 pm. CLOSED WEEKENDS. Admission is always free. The current exhibits will gradually expand as funds and additional samples are obtained.
