Our visitor yard features interactive displays\, marine mammal artifacts\, and a Treasure Trove gift shop. There is no charge for admission\, but donations are appreciated! We are closed on Thanksgiving\, Christmas Eve\, Christmas Day\, and New Year’s Day. \n\n\nBOOK YOUR GROUP HERE!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n20612 Laguna Canyon Road Laguna Beach\, CA 92651 \nHISTORY\nPacific Marine Mammal Center began as Friends of the Sea Lion in 1971 with only three volunteers: Jim Stauffer\, John Cunningham\, and Dr. Rose Ekeberg. \nIn the spring of 1971\, a little girl approached Jim Stauffer\, a Newport Beach lifeguard\, on the beach.  The little girl told Jim that she had seen a seal on the beach.  Jim hopped in his lifeguard jeep and went to go investigate.  What he found was a young Pacific harbor seal. When Jim placed the animal in his jeep\, it leaped right out.  Jim decided the animal must be healthy and just needed to rest\, so he returned to work.  \nConcern for the animal nagged at him all day. When Jim returned to check on the small seal\, it was still on the beach.  Jim picked up the seal and took it to the Dover Shores Animal Hospital\, where Dr. Rod La Shell examined the animal and found that it had lungworms.  With advice from Dr. La Shell\, Jim nursed the harbor seal back to health and released the animal back into the ocean. \n \nMISSION STATEMENT\n“The Pacific Marine Mammal Center rescues\, rehabilitates\, and releases marine mammals and inspires ocean stewardship through research\, education\, and collaboration.” \nRescue\n \nUnlike whales and dolphins\, seals and sea lions don’t have to remain in the water in order to survive. The animals beach themselves to be warm and dry when feeling ill. They seek rest on land for a variety of reasons and are not always in need of intervention. Our staff is trained to recognize animals suffering from infections\, malnourishment\, pneumonia\, gill net strangulation\, etc. which can harm an animal’s chance for survival. \nRehabilitation\n \nWhen a “patient” is admitted\, our staff performs all necessary procedures under the direction and protocols set by the Animal Care Director and our Veterinary Medical Director. During the course of rehabilitation\, animals require a variety of treatments such as administration of antibiotics and subcutaneous fluids\, tube feeding\, force-feeding\, wound care\, etc. \nMost animals come in dehydrated and the most effective means to provide fluids and nourishment is through tube feeding. The process requires the blending of fish\, electrolytes\, warm water\, vitamins\, and medication into a fish formula. This formula is fed to the animals by inserting a flexible tube into the stomach using large syringes. As soon as the animals are hydrated and stable\, we wean them to eat whole fish. \nRelease\n \nOnce an animal has gained an optimal weight and is competing for food\, it’s ready for release. Prior to release\, each animal is tagged with an identification number. The color-coded tags indicate the animal has been rehabilitated and helps identify the specific animal and care center in case the animal needs care in the future. We strive to return every one of our patients back to the wild once their care with us is complete. \nEducation\nIt is not enough to rescue and rehabilitate these animals. We must communicate what needs to be done so that positive change can happen. PMMC strives to inspire ocean stewardship in all generations through sharing the stories of the animals we assist. Over 50\,000 people learn about conservation by talking with our education docents and interacting with exhibits in our visitor yard each year. We welcome over 7\,000 children\, most through our free programs for at-risk communities\, in our onsite experiential-based education programs that teach the importance of marine science and eco-friendly behavior. Our outreach team engages thousands of more people in offsite programs\, which share the importance of community involvement. Additionally\, through distance learning technology\, our education department brings conservation messaging to children and adults all over the nation and internationally. \nResearch\n \nAn important part of marine mammal recovery is ongoing research. Research is being done to find the pathological conditions that affect the marine mammals of Southern California. DESCRIPTION:OPEN WEEKENDS- Mt Wilson\nMount Wilson Observatory is located on the summit of Mount Wilson above Pasadena at an altitude of 5715 feet. Mount Wilson Observatory is visible from much of the Los Angeles area. Free of charge\, this is a must see experience. \n  \n \n\n\nViewing through the 100-Inch Hooker Telescope\nThe world’s largest telescope from 1917 to 1949\, the 100-inch Telescope forever changed our understanding of the scale and nature of our Universe and launched a revolution in astronomy that continues through today. This world-heritage class instrument\, used by many of the greatest astronomers of the Twentieth Century\, has only recently been made available for regular public viewing. It is the largest telescope in the world that you can rent! Imagine looking through the telescope used by astronomers Edwin Hubble and Milton Humason in the late 1920s to measure the expansion of the Universe. \n\n  \n \nThe 60 inch Telescope\nMount Wilson Observatory’s 60-inch telescope was completed in 1908 by Observatory founder George Ellery Hale with funding from Andrew Carnegie. It was the world’s largest operational telescope until Hale went on to complete the Mt. Wilson 100-inch telescope in 1917. For a more detailed history of this revolutionary instrument\, which became the model for all large observatory telescopes of the future\, see the article “Building the 60-inch Telescope.” Among the many important discoveries from the 60-inch telescope was Harlow Shapley’s revelation in 1918 that the accepted view of the time\, that our Sun was near the center of the Milky Way Galaxy\, was wrong. Shapley used the light gathering power of the 60-inch to show that our solar system is instead half way out toward the edge of our Galaxy. The telescope was a workhorse instrument for astronomy for over half a century and used by astronomical luminaries such as Edwin Hubble\, Walter Baade\, and Allan Sandage to unravel the secrets of stars and galaxies. Now retired from active scientific service\, the 60-inch and the 100-inch telescopes are the largest in the world made exclusively available to the public. With their large light-collecting mirrors and the exquisite skies over Mount Wilson\, these historic telescopes provide an unrivaled and unique astronomical experience. \n\n\n\n\n\nCHARA (Center for High Angular Resolution Astronomy)\nMount Wilson’s newest astronomical instruments are Georgia State University’s optical interferometric array of six telescopes. This facility\, located here because of the exceptional seeing conditions\, puts Mount Wilson back on the cutting edge of astrophysics. The full array was completed in 2004. Each telescope of the CHARA Array has a light-collecting mirror 1-meter in diameter. The telescopes are dispersed over the mountain to provide a two-dimensional layout that provides the resolving capability (but not the light collecting ability!) of a single telescope a fifth of a mile in diameter. Light from the individual telescopes is conveyed through vacuum tubes to a central Beam Synthesis Facility in which the six beams are combined together. When the paths of the individual beams are matched to an accuracy of less than one micron\, after the light traverses distances of hundreds of meters\, the Array then acts like a single coherent telescope for the purposes of achieving exceptionally high angular resolution. The Array is capable of resolving details as small as 200 micro-arcseconds\, equivalent to the angular size of a nickel seen from a distance of 10\,000 miles. In terms of the number and size of its individual telescopes\, its ability to operate at visible and near infrared wavelengths\, and its longest baselines of 330 meters\, the CHARA Array is arguably the most powerful instrument of its kind in the world. \nScience Objectives\nThe Array is applicable to problems in almost all areas of contemporary astronomy. It is particularly suited to stellar astrophysics where it will be used to measure the diameters\, distances\, masses\, and luminosities of stars\, as well as to image features such as spots and flares on their surfaces. Other projects range from detecting planetary systems\, imaging stars in process of formation\, and studies of bright transient phenomena like novae. \nFor more information on this amazing research facility and the science that is emerging from it\, please go to the CHARA array homepage. There you can find a video\, Sizing up the Stars\, that explains how interferometry works. \n\n\n\n \nAstronomical Museum\nAlso on the mountain\, next to the 100-inch telescope\, there is a new exhibit hall that displays Albert Michelson’s original interferometer\, used to get the first measurement of stars other than our Sun.  The exhibit hall reveals in detail how the light is combined in the new CHARA area. \nWeekend Public Guided Tours\n\n\n\n\n\nDocent-led walking tours of the observatory take place on Saturdays and Sundays through November 29. The two hour tours depart at 11:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. sharp from the Cosmic Cafe located above the large parking lot at the entrance to the Observatory. A special feature of these tours is entrance into both the 60-inch and 100-inch telescope domes\, as well as the observing room of the 150-foot Solar Tower Telescope.  On rare occasions\, a telescope may be closed to the tour due to a special event or maintenance. \n\n\nPurchasing Tickets \nTickets are $15 (adults) and $13 (ages 12 and under & 62 and older). Tour tickets are available for same-day purchase at the Cosmic Café\, and rarely sell out. For each tour\, 15 spots are available. \nIf you have a large group\, we urge you to opt for a private tour instead. These can be arranged by sending an email request to tours@mtwilson.edu. \nChildren under age 6 are not permitted. The tours involve about a mile of walking and climbing some stairs. Please read the Health Notice in the information tab. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPrivate Group Tours\nPrivate guided tours may be arranged by individuals or groups in advance. Written by Hal McAlister\, the second director of the Mount Wilson Institute and founder of CHARA\, it is a well-illustrated guide to all the points of interest on the mountaintop. \n\n\n\n\nElevation Warning\nThe high elevation of the Observatory (5715 ft) and the change in elevation during the approximately one-mile and two-hour long tour are unsuitable for individuals with respiratory and heart problems or with limited mobility. \nThe century-old facilities are not ADA-compliant and\, except for the Astronomical Museum and the Cosmic Cafe\, offer no access to those who cannot climb multiple flights of stars. Thus\, tours of the Observatory\, either guided or unguided\, are inappropriate for some elderly people and for those who are not in good health. \nVisitors should take these factors into consideration before touring the Observatory. \n\n\n\nParking\n\n\n\nA U.S. Forest Service Adventure Pass is required to park at the Observatory\, as it is located on U.S. Forest Service land. A day pass may be purchased at the Cosmic Cafe (when it is open from April 4 to November 29 in 2020) on weekends between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Other times\, the $5 day pass or the $30 dollar annual pass may be purchased at many locations around Los Angeles before you head up.  Click here to go to the U.S. Forest Service website for more information about the Adventure Pass and where to buy them. El Dorado Archers is a Southern California archery club that competes at local and national tournaments but also maintains a local community program that teaches the basics of archery to the public. \n \nThe El Dorado Park Archery Fields are a great way for the community to learn about and to practice archery. The El Dorado Archers welcomes all family members 8 years of age and older! If you are interested in learning about archery\, the El Dorado Archers have classes for beginners every Saturday at the El Dorado Park Archery Field. Everyone is first required to take a Safety Class\, which costs $5 and runs from 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. every weekend and sign up starts at 8:30 a.m. \n\nA $5 class fee will be charged regardless of using  personal equipment. DESCRIPTION:HIKE TO THE ROCK POOL AT MALIBU CREEK STATE PARK IN AGOURA HILLS! One of the most popular destinations in Malibu Creek State Park is the Rock Pool\, a picturesque place that is easily accessible for all ages. \n \nGetting to the Rock Pool\nOne fun way to get to the Rock Pool is via the Grassland Trail\, accessible on Mulholland Highway just west of Las Virgenes Road\, where street parking is available. Take the Grassland trail (as seen in the photo below)\, with moderate hills\, .7 miles to the Crags Road main fire road/trail in Malibu Creek State Park\, and turn right. Alternatively\, you can park in the Park’s lower parking lot\, pay $12 for a bit more secure parking\, and take the main trail into the park. \n \nGrassland Trail \nSoon you’ll see the sign where you can see the Visitor Center is on the left. That’s the direction you’ll be taking to get to the Rock Pool. Veering to the right gets you to another popular site at the Park\, the old M*A*S*H television series set. \nYou’ll see a bridge over the creek (seen below after the winter rains) that takes you to the Visitor Center (open weekends noon to 4pm). The Rock Pool is the trail on the right (west) before reaching the bridge. Look carefully and you may see the little sign that says “Rock Pool.” \n \n \nCalifornia State Parks\, which manages the Park\, warns visitors not to jump or dive into the Rock Pool as it is dangerous. But it is certainly fun to explore and quite a beautiful area. \n\n\n1925 Las Virgenes Road\, Cornell\, CA 91301 \, United States \nConsidered the recreational crown jewel of the Santa Monica Mountains\, Malibu Creek State Park has over 8\,000 acres of rolling tall grass plains\, oak savannahs\, and dramatic peaks. It’s no wonder many call it “The Yosemite of Southern California”. \nThe park\, formerly owned by 20th Century Fox Studios\, opened in 1976 and has welcomed millions of visitors since. The stunning terrain here that has been seen all over the world in movies and television awaits you. Come hike\, ride\, climb and explore L.A.’s most spectacular park! \n \nMalibu Creek State Park is accessible in Calabasas\, at 1925 Las Virgenes Road\, south of Mulholland. The park contains over 8\,000 acres of rugged\, beautiful hills\, trails\, and scenery. It stretches from Agoura Hills down to Malibu\, down to Malibu Lagoon State Beach\, covering much of the 25-mile Malibu Creek that flows from Boney Mountain down to the Lagoon. Malibu Creek is the only stream channel that crosses through the Santa Monica Mountain range. \nThere are three natural preserves in the park\, Liberty Canyon\, Udell Gorge\, and Kaslow\, which protect Valley Oaks\, rare plants\, and volcanic formations. \nHIKING\n \nThe park’s trails have something for everyone – from novices to those looking for real challenges. Summers can be hot\, so prime time is Fall\, Winter\, and Spring. If you get up early\, you’ll likely see deer nibbling on grass in the fields near the campground. Those seeking additional challenges on two wheels can take on the dry creek bed between Century Lake and the M*A*S*H set. \nROCK CLIMBING\n \nLots of great climbs from 5.8 to 5.10c are found around the Rock Pool. The easiest to reach is the Planet of the Apes Wall – so named because scenes from the “Apes” films were filmed on and around it. “Apes” is almost all overhanging routes. Over at the Rock Pool\, are another ten routes\, some that overhang the water. Fun bouldering here too. \n\nDOGS\nDogs are allowed in the parking lot and campground only. They are not allowed on the backcountry trails. \nPARKING\nAll-day parking is $12.00 (current as of March 2010). On weekdays\, there is no one at the entrance booth\, so the honor system is employed through a self-pay system. Your day fee covers same-day access/parking to ANY California State Park and/or Beach \nSAFETY\nFIRE is a constant danger\, especially in summer and fall. Smoking and all fires are prohibited outside of the parking area\, picnic area\, and campground. \nGas and charcoal fires are always allowed in the campground. The location is The Clubhouse Theater which is a small location literally right beside Jon’s Grocery store entrance on Vermont Ave. You’ll see some comedy posters on the windows out front. \n \nAugust 12th’s show will feature improv teams The Funnies\, Dearly Beloved\, and a superstar team of greats including Peter Banifaz\, Will Hines\, and Jim Woods. \nThere is free parking all over the shopping center lot including in front of the theater. You’ll probably see lots of people standing right outside the doors of the theater. \n\n \n1607 North Vermont Avenue\, Los Angeles\, CA 90027 \n \nThe Clubhouse is your home base for indie improv shows and classes\, sketch\, and a place for the comm. It is an independently owned and operated comedy theatre in the Los Feliz area of Los Angeles. There are classes and shows 7 days a week\, 365 days a year. \nEvery show at the Clubhouse is run by the people who perform there and is offered free of charge. The entire theatre is paid for by the donations that are taken at each show. If you do not have cash on hand\, most teams offer their Venmo or Paypal info. The Clubhouse is also the only theatre in town that offers ample free parking on site for everyone both onstage and in the audience. There are plenty of options for new and seasoned improvisers\, comics\, and writers to get stage time. \n \nUnlike many other theaters in Los Angeles\, the Clubhouse has no house teams\, has no specific form or curriculum\, and is open to everybody. DESCRIPTION:THURSDAY TO SUNDAY – Culver City\nThe Museum of Jurassic Technology in Los Angeles\, California is an educational institution dedicated to the advancement of knowledge and the public appreciation of the Lower Jurassic. \n \nTHE MUSEUM IS OPEN \nTHURSDAY AND FRIDAY FROM 2:00 pm TO 8:00 pm\nSATURDAY AND SUNDAY FROM 12:00 pm TO 6:00 pm\nThe Museum has instituted an online reservation and timed ticketing system to ensure the greatest possible safety and experience for our patrons. For the foreseeable future\, visits to the Museum must be booked in advance. \nIt is advised to arrive at least 15 min before your appointment time to allow for time to park and check in. When you arrive please have your confirmation email available for the front desk attendant. If you would care for a glass of tea during your visit\, we ask you to partake one-hour following your scheduled appointment to mitigate overcrowding at any one time. \nThe Tula Tea Room and Borzoi Kabinet Theater are located on the second floor and available to the public during museum hours. \nADMISSION\nChildren 12 and under\, Free \nAdults\, $ 12.00\nChildren aged 13 to 21\, $ 10.00\nFor students in full time education\, $ 10.00\nPersons 62 years or older\, $ 10.00\nUnemployed persons\, $ 10.00\nDisabled Persons\, $3.00\nActive service personnel in uniform\, $ 3.00 \n\nCELL PHONE USE AND PHOTOGRAPHY\nThe Museum of Jurassic Technology does not allow cell phone use\, including text messaging and photography while in the Museum. \nPhotography is not permitted anywhere in the Museum. In its original sense\, the term “museum” meant a spot dedicated to the muses – “a place where man’s mind could attain a mood of aloofness above everyday affairs.” By far the most important museum of antiquity was the great institution at Alexandria founded by Ptolemy Philadelphus in the third century before Christ\, (an endeavor supported by a grant from the treasury). And no treatment of the museum would be complete without mention of Noah’s Ark in which we find the complete Museum of Natural History the world has ever seen. \nThe Museum of Jurassic Technology traces its origins to this period when many of the essential collections of today were beginning to take form.
