SUMMARY:The Hollywood Cross
DESCRIPTION:The Hollywood Cross\, is better known by it’s official name as the Hollywood Pilgrimage Memorial Monument. And if you’ve ever driven on the 101 freeway through Hollywood\, then you’ve probably have noticed the giant\, illuminated cross on top of a hill just to the north of the Cahuenga exit. \n \nThe Hollywood Cross is a memorial to Christine Stevenson\, a founding member of the Theatre Arts Alliance\, the group who built the Hollywood Bowl. The Alliance began producing plays exclusively with religious themes\, but some members wanted to branch out with some productions of a more secular nature. \n  \n \nMs. Stevenson had no interest in secular productions and in 1920 she built the Pilgrimage Theatre\, named after her new production\, the Pilgrimage Play. \nWhen Stevenson died in 1922\, the Pilgrimage continued to put on the Pilgrimage Play until 1964 when a lawsuit brought the play’s run to its end. This legal action stemmed from concerns about the separation of church and state that came about in 1941\, after the County of Los Angeles was deeded the theatre and the land it was on. \nIn 1976\, The Pilgrimage was renamed John Anson Ford Amphitheater in honor of the former L.A. County Supervisor and today it’s known simply as The Ford. \n  \n \nThe Many Iterations of the Hollywood Cross\nIn 1923\, in honor of Ms. Stevenson\, a giant wooden cross was placed on the hilltop above the Pilgrimage Theater. It was lit up in the evening when her play was being performed in the amphitheater below. \nIn 1993 the current monument — a 32-foot tall memorial of steel and opaque plastic — was put in place and dubbed the Hollywood Pilgrimage Memorial Monument. Two years later\, it was named the Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument #617. \n\nHow to get to the Hollywood Cross\nTo visit the Cross from the Ford Theatre\, walk south along Cahuenga Boulevard East. Right before the intersection with Cahuenga Terrace\, on top of a retaining wall\, you’ll see a narrow trail leading up the hill. This isn’t the most obvious of trails\, so you’ll have to look closely. \nThe hike is short\, but the trail is quite steep. The path isn’t well marked or well groomed\, so come prepared with proper shoes. The hike is challenging\, but eventually you will come to the  top of the hill at the base of the Hollywood Cross. From the top of the hill the views are spectacular. \n  \n\nWhere to Park When Hiking to the Hollywood Cross\nThere’s no parking along Cahuenga Boulevard. Find parking on Cahuenga Terrace\, a small side street just to the south of the cross. Or\, depending on the time of day (and if you’re feeling bold)\, you can park in the Ford Theatre’s nearby lot. \nThe Hollywood Cross is now owned by The Church On The Way in Van Nuys\, California. \n\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

DESCRIPTION:Barbara Kruger\, Untitled (Questions)- DTLA\n\n  \n\n\nMOCA has reinstalled the monumental wall work by Los Angeles–based artist Barbara Kruger (b. New York 1945)\, Untitled (Questions) (1990/2018). The emblematic red\, white\, and blue artwork was originally commissioned by MOCA in 1989 for the exhibition A Forest of Signs: Art in the Crisis of Representation\, and was last installed in 1990 on the south wall of MOCA’s building (now The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA). The work holds an iconic place in the collective memory of Los Angeles’s art community and is considered one of the museum’s curatorial highlights over its forty-year history. \n\nThis iteration is installed on the north facade of The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA\, facing Temple Street and measuring 30 by 191 feet. Asking nine questions including “Who is beyond the law?\,” “Who is bought and sold?\,” and “Who is free to choose?\,” the work points to issues of patriotism\, civic engagement\, and power relations. In connection with the work\, MOCA led a series of voter registration efforts during the 2018 midterms\, and will continue these efforts in advance of the 2020 general election. \n\nThis project was initiated by MOCA Director Klaus Biesenbach and is organized by MOCA Senior Curator Bennett Simpson. \nThis installation of Barbara Kruger’s Untitled (Questions) is generously supported by an anonymous donor. \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\nONE MUSEUM. The land art movement first appeared in the late 1960s and served to challenge the location\, material\, size\, and temporal existence of a work of art. Double Negative consists of two long straight trenches\, 30 feet wide and 50 feet deep\, cut into the “tabletop” of Mormon Mesa\, displacing 240\,000 tons of desert sandstone. When his children were young\, Walt\, a Los Feliz denizen\, took them to the merry-go-round on weekends. During one visit\, while sitting on a bench watching his kids circle round and round\, he was inspired to create a large scale gathering site that the whole family could enjoy. His dream was realized on July 17\, 1955\, when Disneyland opened to the public. \n \n  \nClassic Car Show with a little coffee and some amazing automobiles\nLast Sunday of every month\n  \n \nCars & Coffee Los Angeles was founded to bring together like-minded automotive\, photography\, and design enthusiasts. The bar has a long and celebrated history within the Indie Music Scene and the LGBT community that continues to this day. Settling into its current iteration around 1975\, it was an early stage for drag and gay cabaret acts and a safe space for non-identifying Latinx locals. In the early 2000s\, it gained notoriety as one of the central hubs and incubators for the blossoming indie music scene. \n \nBands like Rilo Kiley\, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club\, and The Silversun Pickups all started on our stage. As the longest-standing\, independent\, live music venue in Silverlake\, the blending of the two subcultures has cemented its place in local history. The Silverlake Lounge is a place of diversity and a safe space for Creatives and the Queer BIPOC community. It is one of the few properties left that serves the whole of its community. \nOur continued mission is to produce nightly entertainment that presents independent\, emerging artists to greater Los Angeles and its welcomed travelers while remaining a local watering hole for the East Side neighborhood. We feature lineups that represent the color and diversity of our community— indie\, punk\, country\, and folk artists’ sets\, singer/songwriter showcases\, weekend drag cabaret\, comedy\, and karaoke. The first African American museum of art\, history\, and culture fully supported by a state\, CAAM was the direct result of a sustained\, multiyear campaign of activism undertaken by visionary founders and community members. Its creation was an early and tangible recognition by the State of California of the critically important role African Americans have played in the American West’s cultural\, economic\, and political development. \n \nCAAM’s permanent collection consists of over 5\,000 objects ranging from the 1800s to the present. It encompasses paintings\, photographs\, film\, sculpture\, historical documents\, and artifacts\, and it spans nineteenth-century landscape paintings to modern artworks to contemporary mixed-media reflections on cultural and political events. The Museum’s first acquisitions included a bronze bust of civil rights activist Dr. Mary Mcleod Bethune by artist Richmond Barthé and a sculpture by artist Maren Hassinger\, then at the start of her career. These laid the perfect groundwork for CAAM’s mandate to assemble a comprehensive\, thoughtful\, and wide-reaching collection. \nCAAM’s deepest holdings include art made or connected to African Americans in California and the western United States. However\, the Museum also has significant works of contemporary art from the African diaspora (including Haiti\, Brazil\, and Jamaica)\, as well as traditional African art from Western\, Central\, and Sub-Saharan Africa. CAAM aims to represent the diverse contributions of African Americans in the United States\, but also to interpret how the past has affected identity in the present. \n \nVISIT\nThe California African American Museum is located in the heart of Los Angeles\, just steps away from USC\, the California Science Center\, and the Natural History Museum. The building started its life in the 1920s as a tavern and inn\, catering to motorists traveling the new Route 66. As the years went on\, the inn closed and the property was expanded to make space for a filming studio\, which in turn became a rehearsal space for rock bands in the heyday of the Sunset Strip era. Along the way\, the street-front bar evolved into a dive with exotic dancers working the stage. \n \nThe East Hollywood property caught the eye of Dave Neupert\, a partner in L.A. nightlife concepts La Cita\, Footsies\, Melody Lounge\, El Dorado\, and Monty Bar. The location is The Clubhouse Theater which is a small location literally right beside Jon’s Grocery store entrance on Vermont Ave. You’ll see some comedy posters on the windows out front. \n \nAugust 12th’s show will feature improv teams The Funnies\, Dearly Beloved\, and a superstar team of greats including Peter Banifaz\, Will Hines\, and Jim Woods. \nThere is free parking all over the shopping center lot including in front of the theater. You’ll probably see lots of people standing right outside the doors of the theater. \n\n \n1607 North Vermont Avenue\, Los Angeles\, CA 90027 \n \nThe Clubhouse is your home base for indie improv shows and classes\, sketch\, and a place for the comm. It is an independently owned and operated comedy theatre in the Los Feliz area of Los Angeles. There are classes and shows 7 days a week\, 365 days a year. \nEvery show at the Clubhouse is run by the people who perform there and is offered free of charge. The entire theatre is paid for by the donations that are taken at each show. If you do not have cash on hand\, most teams offer their Venmo or Paypal info. The Clubhouse is also the only theatre in town that offers ample free parking on site for everyone both onstage and in the audience. There are plenty of options for new and seasoned improvisers\, comics\, and writers to get stage time. \n \nUnlike many other theaters in Los Angeles\, the Clubhouse has no house teams\, has no specific form or curriculum\, and is open to everybody. DESCRIPTION:TODAY @ CAAM – Exposition Park\nCAMM is pleased to present \n  \n  \n  \n\n \n600 State Dr\, Los Angeles\, CA 90037\, USA \n\nABOUT CAAM\nThe California African American Museum‘s mission is to research\, collect\, preserve\, and interpret for public enrichment the history\, art\, and culture of African Americans with an emphasis on California and the western United States. \nFounded in 1977\, CAAM has a long and rich history. The first African American museum of art\, history\, and culture fully supported by a state\, CAAM was the direct result of a sustained\, multiyear campaign of activism undertaken by visionary founders and community members. Its creation was an early and tangible recognition by the State of California of the critically important role African Americans have played in the American West’s cultural\, economic\, and political development. \n \nCAAM’s permanent collection consists of over 5\,000 objects ranging from the 1800s to the present. It encompasses paintings\, photographs\, film\, sculpture\, historical documents\, and artifacts\, and it spans nineteenth-century landscape paintings to modern artworks to contemporary mixed-media reflections on cultural and political events. The Museum’s first acquisitions included a bronze bust of civil rights activist Dr. Mary Mcleod Bethune by artist Richmond Barthé and a sculpture by artist Maren Hassinger\, then at the start of her career. These laid the perfect groundwork for CAAM’s mandate to assemble a comprehensive\, thoughtful\, and wide-reaching collection. \nCAAM’s deepest holdings include art made or connected to African Americans in California and the western United States. However\, the Museum also has significant works of contemporary art from the African diaspora (including Haiti\, Brazil\, and Jamaica)\, as well as traditional African art from Western\, Central\, and Sub-Saharan Africa. Life is too short to not know and use all of your senses. ESMoA believes that art is a state of mind that can open all your senses. And artworks help you to reflect on things that are and will be. So come and experience it for yourself. We promise that with every visit to our Art Laboratory located on Main Street in El Segundo\, California you will see the world and yourself a little bit differently. \nESMoA has functioned as a catalyst for creative thinking offering three unique Experiences per year. The Experiences present a variety of media\, including sculpture\, painting\, works on paper\, performances\, and photography. \n \nPARKING\nComing to JUST DRAW Drawing Club? We recommend parking in one of the free city lots on Grand Ave. or top of the parking garage attached to the 99 cent store. The entrance to the parking garage is on Grand Ave. Street parking is available for free in 2-hour increments. \n  \nGETTING HERE\nThe closest metro stop is El Segundo Station (the Green Line) and is about a 20-minute walk or a five-minute Lyft ride. \nESMoA does not have a bike rack and we cannot guarantee bike parking at ESMoA. \n  \nNEW HOURS\nThursday 12pm-5pm\nFriday 10am-5pm\nSaturday 10am-5pm\nSunday closed \nESMoA is closed to the public Monday through Wednesday\, but it is open for educational and special events by advance appointment. \nESMoA is closed between Experiences.
