Sunset Blvd West Hollywood\, CA 90069 \nAs long as there has been a Los Angeles rock scene\, there has been the Whisky A Go-Go. An anchor on the Sunset Strip since its opening in 1964\, the Whisky A Go-Go has played host to rock ‘n’ roll’s most important bands\, from the Doors\, Janis Joplin\, and Led Zeppelin to today’s up-and-coming new artists. \n \nOn January 16\, 1964\, a small club on the Sunset Strip opened its doors for the first time.\n\nIt was The Whisky a Go Go\, the first-ever live music venue to be inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame and the most iconic club on the Strip. Founded by Mario Maglieri\, Elmer Valentine\, and Phil Tanzini – The Whisky had to spell its name without the ‘e’ in whiskey because Los Angeles city zoning laws didn’t allow any club to be named after alcohols (The Whisky constantly had problems with the city and for a while had the name “The Whisk?”). The world-famous Whisky a Go Go opened on Jan. 15\, 1964\, with a concert by Johnny Rivers. \nA DJ named Joanie Labine (the first DJ at The Whisky) played records in a booth that was suspended to the right of the stage in between Johnny Rivers’ sets. Labine entertained the crowd by dancing and the idea of the go-go dancer was born. Very soon a ‘costume’ of the go-go dancers also emerged: a girl wearing a short\, fringed skirt and high\, white boots: a trend that will spread to all discotheques and nightclubs all across the country. \nAnd the rest is history… \n\nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nwww.eventbrite.com/e/fast-times-monday-night\n \n  \nFind more

SUMMARY:Milk Crate Mondays
DESCRIPTION:EVERY MONDAY- Chinatown\nVinyl Dance Party every Monday at Melody Lounge! All Vinyl. All Night. All Vibes.\nHip Hop | R&B | Soul | Funk | Classics \nNeedle Drops at 9:00 PM\nResident DJs: DP SOUND CREW \n  \n \n\n \nChinatown\, 939 N Hill St.\, Los Angeles\, CA 90012 \n \nThere’s something to be said for inner beauty. Yes\, even when it comes down to the interior of a small and unassuming drinkery in the middle of Chinatown\, it truly is what’s on the inside that counts. Melody Lounge\, located off of N Hill Street\, right off the 110\, and within walking distance of Dodger Stadium\, invites you in with a modest\, yet charming exterior. A quiet entryway welcomes you through the door into a low-key hideaway ridden with an array of superb cocktails and a collection of craft beers that will make your head spin. \n \nOnce you enter Melody Lounge\, you will find yourself within a cozy nook illuminated by red lanterns\, giving off an alluring crimson hue to the place. A vinyl record is usually spinning\, playing just loud enough to not have to yell over while you’re chatting with your bartender. With typically\, a moderately laid-back atmosphere\, on rowdier nights like Sundays when they feature karaoke from 9:30 to close\, the room fills up quickly and the good times roll. \n \nReaching its five-year anniversary in March\, Melody Lounge started solely as a craft beer bar and received its full liquor license just over one year ago\, allowing them to accumulate quite the range of spirits to coincide with its diverse gallery of craft brews. \n“We still have a big focus on craft beer\, which is where our roots are\, but we just wanted to take the next step\, upgrade\, and tailor a cocktail menu\,” says general manager Eric Bouvet. “We do all 32 classics at any given time\, and we also have a small list of signature cocktails. We try to keep it simple\, offer good cocktails.” \n \nMelody Lounge and its multiple sister bars including The Short Stop in Echo Park and Footsies in Cypress Park\, typically fall under the same theme of slight preservation. As they each display a low-key appearance from the exterior\, upon entering\, you will find that there is so much more than what initially meets the eye. \n\nHours\nSunday – Friday: 5:00pm – 2:00am\nSaturday: 2:00pm – 2:00am\n  \n\nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nwww.facebook.com/melodyloungeLA\n \n  \nFind more

Borrow for 3 weeks\, with the option to renew\, if available. \nPlease note: Laptop & Hotspot Loan Kits require a full access card to check out. Call your nearest Sidewalk Service location for details about signing up or upgrading your digital card. \nFunding for this project has been provided by the Coronavirus Aid\, Relief\, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFrequently Asked Questions\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n1. Who can check out a Chromebook kit?\nAdults with a standard adult library card in good standing will be able to check out a Chromebook kit at a participating library.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n2. How do I check out a Chromebook kit?\nRequests for Chromebook kits can be made using our online catalog or over the phone\, like any of our other materials. At this time requests are site-specific and can only be placed at libraries offering the service (listed above). Call a library offering the service to arrange a same-day checkout\, if kits are available.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n3. When can I pick up my Laptop & Hotspot?\nCall the owning library and arrange to pick up your kit during Sidewalk Service hours.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n4. How long can I keep the Laptop & Hotspot Loan? Can I renew?\nThe kits can be borrowed for 3 weeks. If no other customers are on the waiting list\, the checkout can be renewed up to 3 times. The renewal needs to be made before your checkout period ends.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n5. How do I return the Chromebook Kit?\nChromebooks must be returned in person to the owning library during Sidewalk Service hours. They cannot be returned in the bookdrop. They cannot be returned to any library other than the one where the kit was checked out. Please call the owning library to arrange a drop-off time and call again once at the library to alert staff. Staff will bring out a box labeled Laptop Return to the Sidewalk Service table. You’ll be instructed to remove all items – the Chromebook\, the wireless hotspot\, and both charging cables – from the carrying case. Put the case into the box first\, on the bottom\, and then put all other items in on top. Staff will check the box to make sure all items are inside and that they look fine. All items will be quarantined for 4 days and confirmed to be working properly before being checked in. Staff will contact you if there are any questions or concerns. Please remember that the loan will still show on your account until the quarantine and check-in process is complete.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n6. SUMMARY:Carbon Lounge: SUNDAY BUMPs & JAMz
DESCRIPTION:FREE ALL NIGHT!- Culver City\nCarbon Lounge in Culver City! presents BUMPS & JAMZ with DJ OnTheCLOCK’s EVERY SUNDAY\, No Cover Hip Hop House Party! \n\nEVERY SUNDAY\n\nGreat DJ’s\,\n  \n \nTop Shelf Bar\nFree Entry\, Free Parking\, \n  \nBUMPs & JAMz Hours\nEvery Sundays: 9:00pm – 2:00am \n\n\nCarbon Lounge- 9300 Venice Blvd Culver City\, CA 90232\n\nCarbon Lounge is a fun\, local\, and energetic bar in Downtown Culver City spinning different music 7-days a week. The vibe was real chill and the music was always poppin’! You could tell the DJ was giving us his best because he was dj’n like it was a Saturday night!\n\n\n \nThe venue is small but kind of open since it has two entrances. It is really dark too so don’t expect to be able to see much while you’re in there. \n\n\nWhat are people saying about Carbon on Yelp?\nThis place was a nice vibe with music you could really dance to you. The demographic was diverse and I could always love a diverse crowd- Alexis G. Perth Amboy\, NJ \nI come here when I want a ghetto ass place to get a stiff drink and shake my ass in a dive bar. Drinks have gotten a little pricey but they’re spicy. Appreciate the dicey atmosphere within steps of boujee downtown Culver City. Music late nights and they’re not open until late (9 is late for my old ass). Directly across from in n out on Venice or walk through the alley behind the east side of Main st in Culver City toward Venice Blvd.- Jen A. Culver City\, CA \nSo I came here not knowing what to expect. I usually go to parties and clubs in OC or dance festivals. I’m 47 years old and single guy btw.\nTo make it short\, the minute I got there I was approached by 2 extremely attractive white blonde girls. Unfortunately I found out one of them wasn’t even of legal age. But the other girl was. We danced and drank and all. We exchanged numbers and she actually called me.\nThis never happened to me in 33 years of going to clubs (yes I did go clubbing and drinking at the age of 14 when I lived in Germany…don’t know how I’m still alive and work for one of the most exciting and innovative companies on the planet lol.)\nSo yeah… go there. You won’t get disappointed. A LOT OF WHITE GIRLS WHO LIKE MINORITIES GO THERE. So much so that this place has more white chicks than guys lol- Alireza S. SUMMARY:Hammer Museum Free Screening: Phil For Short

Register at cinema.ucla.edu to attend this in-theater screening. \n\n\n\n\n\nLE MÉNAGE DRANEM\n\nThe Dranems\, France\, 1913 \nMonsieur Dranem cooks\, cleans\, and sews “like an elephant threading a needle”\, as per Ciné-Journal\, while his militant wife gambols in pantaloons\, smokes pipes\, drinks pints\, plays cards (with “Léontine”)\, and assaults her cowed spouse. \nDCP\, b&w\, silent\, 11 min. \n\n\n\n\n\nPHIL FOR SHORT\n\nU.S.\, 1919 \nThe daughter of an eccentric professor of Greek antiquity\, Damophilia (Evelyn Greeley) has never been one for convention. Shortening her name to Phil\, she manages the family farm in overalls and short bobbed hair much to the horror of the local busy bodies. When her father dies and the busy bodies come to reign her in\, Phil hits the road disguised as boy and meets another professor of ancient Greece (Charles Walcott)\, an avowed women-hater who takes a shine to Phil’s well-versed “twin.” Misperceptions and misunderstandings—orchestrated and otherwise—abound from there until love wins out—on Phil’s terms—in this charmingly subversive romantic comedy. \nDCP\, b&w\, silent\, 82 min. Director: Oscar Apfel. Screenwriters: Clara Beranger\, Forrest Halsey. With: Evelyn Greeley\, Charles Walcott\, James A. Furey. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nATTENDING THIS PROGRAM?\nTicketing: Admission to Archive screenings at the Hammer is free. From the earliest silent films requiring variable speed projection all the way up to cutting-edge digital cinema\, the Wilder can accommodate an array of screen technologies. \n \nThe theater’s modern design by Michael Maltzan Architecture stylishly interprets cinema’s play of light and movement in real space\, and the 285-seat interior features comfortable leather seats with superb sightlines. The theater is made possible by a generous gift from Audrey L. Wilder and named in honor of Mrs. Wilder’s late husband\, the legendary screenwriter\, director and producer. Born on the outskirts of the Austro-Hungarian empire\, Billy Wilder fled Nazi Germany in the 1930s to become a master of Hollywood film language and a shrewd comic observer of the American scene. Among the many classics Wilder co-wrote and directed were Double Indemnity (1944)\, Sunset Boulevard (1950) and Some Like It Hot (1959). \n\nPlease note that food is not permitted inside the theater. There are dining options in the surrounding Westwood Village. You may also opt to bring your own food and eat in the courtyard just outside the theater. \n \n\nThe Hammer Museum champions the art and artists who challenge us to see the world in a new light\, to experience the unexpected\, to ignite our imaginations\, and inspire change. \nThe Hammer understands that art not only has the power to transport us through aesthetic experience but can also provide significant insight into some of the most pressing cultural\, political\, and social questions of our time. We share the unique and invaluable perspectives that artists have on the world around us. \nA vibrant intellectual and creative nexus\, the Hammer is fueled by dynamic exhibitions and programs—including lectures\, symposia\, film series\, readings\, and musical performances—that spark meaningful encounters with art and ideas. \nAnd through our unwavering commitment to free admission and free public programs\, the Hammer Museum is open for all and FREE FOR GOOD.\n  \nHours\nMonday: Closed\nTuesday – Sunday: 11:00am – 6:00pm \n\nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nhttps://www.cinema.ucla.edu/calendar\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Since winning that battle\, the Peninsula Neighborhood Association has been actively involved in preserving the Peninsula’s quality of life through sponsoring local events and activities\, as well as representing Peninsula residents before the City on matters that could affect our neighborhood. \nMISSION STATEMENT:\nTo protect and preserve the beaches along the Long Beach Peninsula for public usage and to ensure these beaches\nand community be maintained at the highest residential and recreational standards. \nHISTORY\nOne of the first structures on the Peninsula was an isolated duck hunting club located at the bayside end of what is now 61st Place. The club was established at the turn of the 19th to the 20th century. The first summer beach homes\, primarily owned by residents of Los Angeles and Pasadena\, were built in 1902-04. Owners of these summer homes were able to reach the Peninsula by means of an interurban electric train that ran from Los Angeles to Newport Beach. The train ran down the center of Ocean Boulevard the length of the Peninsula and then across a trestle connecting the east end of the Peninsula to Seal Beach. \n“The Pavilion\,” which at various times during its history served as an expensive restaurant and roller skating rink\, was established around 1910-12 at the oceanside end of 62nd Place\, which was then called Pier Avenue. Pier Avenue undoubtedly got its name from the pier that extended out into the ocean from The Pavilion. The Pavilion and its pier burned down a few years before a massive hurricane swept across the Peninsula in 1939\, destroying or causing significant damage to most structures throughout the Peninsula. \nThe Seaside Walk Boardwalk\, which was built in the ’20s\, is considered by residents to be a historical treasure. Attempts to replace it with concrete have been strongly opposed by Peninsula residents over the years and\, in the 1980s\, money was raised by residents to provide new surface boards (the City replaced the boards again in 2003). \nThe Peninsula has grown to encompass its current mix of single-family homes\, duplexes\, condominiums\, and apartments. Residents are a diverse group of families\, singles\, and senior citizens who have been residents for decades. The Peninsula continues to evolve\, while at the same time retaining its unique environment and lifestyle. \n\n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nlbpeninsula.org/summer-concert-series\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

SUMMARY:African American Firefighter Museum
DESCRIPTION:EVERY SUNDAY – Los Angeles\nVisit The African American Firefighter Museum! The African American Firefighter Museum is dedicated to promote diversity and to stand up for inequality against all races and genders. \nThe first floor contains vintage fire apparatus\, stories and pictures of pioneering African American Los Angeles Firefighters. The Museum gallery is located on the second floor with pictures\, artifacts and other memorabilia of African American Firefighters from around the country. \nOPEN EVERY SUNDAY FROM 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm\n \n\n\n1401 S Central Ave\, Los Angeles\, CA 90021 \n\nHISTORY\nThe AAFFM opened it’s doors as a Museum on December 13\, 1997. The dedication of the Museum also served as the acknowledgement of what was believed to be the city’s first 100 years of service by African American Firefighters (1897-1997). In 2002\, the Los Angeles Times contacted the AAFFM and stated they had discovered factual information to indicate the history started before 1897 with a man named Sam Haskins\, who was listed as the first Los Angeles Fireman of African decent when he was hired in 1892 and killed while responding to a fire in 1895. \nToday the Museum is open to the public and is strictly volunteer and donation driven. It is a 501 c(3) non-profit organization and it is available for use by organizations and individuals that desire to host events such as; meetings\, luncheons\, dinners\, banquets\, book signings\, film viewings\, jazz festivals\, social dances\, receptions and retreats. Our beloved historian\, 96 year old retired Firefighter Arnett Hartsfield\, who passed away in 2014 was our most cherished volunteer. As a Los Angeles Firefighter during the 1940s and 50’s he lead the integration of the Los Angeles Fire Department. As a graduate of USC law school\, he and his fellow firemen known as the Stentorians\, the NAACP and the local community were instrumental in successfully integrating the LAFD. The stories of the men that endured that horrific fight are told by the museum’s photographs\, paintings\, and artifacts. \nMISSION STATEMENT\nThe African American Fire Fighter Museum is dedicated to collecting\, conserving\,  and sharing the heritage of African American Fire Fighters through collaboration and education. \n\n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nwww.aaffmuseum.org\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

SUMMARY:Zeiss Telescopes
DESCRIPTION:DAILY – Griffith Observatory\n\n\nOBSERVE THE NIGHT SKIES AT GRIFFITH OBSERVATORY! Free telescope viewing is available each evening the Observatory is open and skies are clear. Knowledgeable telescope demonstrators are available to guide visitors in observing. \nObserving usually begins around 7:00 p.m. Please be aware the demonstrators must cut off the line for each telescope at 9:30 p.m. or earlier to enable all viewing to be completed by 9:45 p.m. Hours for telescope operation are not the same as for the building (which closes at 10:00 p.m.). \n\nThe Zeiss Telescopes\nGriffith Observatory is one of the premier public observatories in the world. One of the principal reasons is the presence and regular availability of high-quality public telescopes. Griffith J. Griffith wanted the public to have the opportunity to look through a telescope\, which he felt might broaden human perspective. Mounted in the copper-clad dome on the east end of the building is the Zeiss telescope array. This telescope is free to the public every night the Observatory is open and the sky is clear. \nThe 12-Inch Zeiss Refracting Telescope\nSince opening in 1935\, more than seven million people have put an eye to Griffith Observatory’s original 12-inch Zeiss refracting telescope. More people have looked through it than any other telescope in the world. Located in the roof-top dome on the building’s east end\, the Zeiss telescope is intended mainly for nighttime viewing by the general public\, commonly targeting the Moon\, planets\, and brightest showpiece objects of our galaxy. A popular public destination when special celestial events occur\, more people viewed Halley’s Comet and comets Hale-Bopp and Hyakutake through the Observatory’s Zeiss telescope than any other telescope on the planet. \n \nThe telescope itself is in excellent condition and was unchanged by the renovation and expansion project. The copper roof of the telescope dome was repaired and restored\, and the dome’s drive mechanisms were replaced. The most significant change is the addition of a new exhibit station located in the Hall of the Eye exhibit hall below the telescope dome. The station provides live video and audio feeds from the telescope and allows visitors unable to climb the stairs into the telescope dome to have an observing experience. Most nights\, other telescopes also are available on either the roof or front lawn to allow those in wheelchairs to observe directly. \nWhen the night sky is clear\, the Zeiss telescope is open from the roof and serves up to 600 visitors per night. One of the Observatory’s experienced telescope demonstrators guides the public in looking through the eyepiece of the 12-inch Zeiss refractor (so-called because its light is collected and focused by a 12-inch diameter glass lens at the front of the 16-foot-long telescope tube). The main telescope tube carries a smaller 9-inch refracting telescope piggyback\, which permits two different views of a single object\, as appropriate. \nThe telescope sits on a tilted mounting (an equatorial mount) aligned with the Earth’s axis\, and it is slowly turned by a motor to compensate for the Earth’s rotation so that objects remain centered in view for as long as is desired. Counterweights precisely balance the telescope so that the Telescope Demonstrator can easily move the instrument by hand in spite of its 9\,000-pound weight. The unique design of construction by Zeiss also counteracts the bending of the telescope due to gravity with counterweighted levers in the telescope’s tube and mounting. Such a system is said to be “stress compensated.” \nThe genesis of Griffith Observatory’s public telescope occurred when Griffith J. Griffith was invited to visit to Mount Wilson Observatory\, then home to the world’s largest operating telescope\, the 60-inch reflector. While there\, he was given the opportunity to view a celestial wonder through the telescope. Profoundly moved by the experience\, Griffith seized on the idea of constructing a public observatory with a telescope that could be used by all residents of Los Angeles. He specified in his will that the telescope was to be “at least 12-inches in diameter” and “complete in all its details” and was to be located “high and above the Hall of Science.” In 1931\, the Griffith Trust ordered the telescope from the Carl Zeiss Company of Jena\, Germany; the $14\,900 spent on the instrument was the first purchase of material for Griffith Observatory. \n\n \n2800 East Observatory Road\, Los Angeles\, CA 90027 \n\n \n\nGriffith Observatory is Southern California’s gateway to the cosmos! Visitors may look through telescopes\, explore exhibits\, see live shows in the Samuel Oschin Planetarium\, and enjoy spectacular views of Los Angeles and the Hollywood Sign. \nAll visitors must wear a face mask at all times while inside the Observatory and on the roof. By entering the building\, visitors are agreeing to follow this requirement. \nStarting November 29\, 2021\, visitors will also need to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination to enter. \n\nEveryone is Welcome\n\n\nGriffith Observatory is a free-admission facility located on the south side of Mount Hollywood in Griffith Park. The building and grounds are accessible for all visitors. The building is busiest on weekends\, during summer and holiday periods\, and at sunset. \nGriffith Observatory’s grounds and roads are generally open the same hours as Griffith Park\, 5:00 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.\, every day. Access to Griffith Park is free\, though there is paid parking closest to the Observatory. There are public restrooms located next to the Observatory parking lot. Trailheads on Observatory grounds lead to Mount Hollywood\, the Greek Theatre area\, and Fern Dell. \n \n\nDaily Programs\n\nWhether you experience the universe in the Samuel Oschin Planetarium\, observe the sky through a telescope\, explore the exhibits\, listen to a talk about the Tesla Coil\, or pose with the Hollywood Sign\, each day there’s something to engage and inspire you at Griffith Observatory. \n \n\nSamuel Oschin Planetarium\n\nTravel to the farthest reaches of the universe and into the microscopic building blocks of life. Live presentations immerse you in the wonder and meaning of the cosmos. \n \nCalendar\n\nAre you looking for latest discoveries about the universe\, what leading astronomers are saying\, or when Sun is at its highest point each day? In its original sense\, the term “museum” meant a spot dedicated to the muses – “a place where man’s mind could attain a mood of aloofness above everyday affairs.” By far the most important museum of antiquity was the great institution at Alexandria founded by Ptolemy Philadelphus in the third century before Christ\, (an endeavor supported by a grant from the treasury). And no treatment of the museum would be complete without mention of Noah’s Ark in which we find the complete Museum of Natural History the world has ever seen. \nThe Museum of Jurassic Technology traces its origins to this period when many of the essential collections of today were beginning to take form. Many exhibits which we today have come to know as part of the Museum were\, in fact\, formally part of other less well-known collections and were subsequently consolidated into the single collection which we have come to know as The Museum of Jurassic Technology and thus configured\, received great public acclaim as well as much discussion in scholastic circles. \n\nHours\nMonday – Wednesday: Closed\nThursday – Friday : 2:00pm – 8:00pm\nSaturday – Sunday: 12:00pm – 6:00pm \n\n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nwww.mjt.org\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

It attracts and influences many other species of animals and plants within the forest. Later\, when it tears loose as drift kelp\, it provides large quantities of food for animals living on the seashore and ocean bottom. \nKelp bass\, giant kelpfish\, garibaldi\, norris’ top snail\, and kelp crabs are all common inhabitants of the kelp forest. Kelp anchors to the rocky bottom with a structure called the holdfast. The holdfast has many crevices and is home to many other animals such as spiny brittlestars and amphipods. The leaf-like kelp blades (also called fronds) provide a large surface area for photosynthesis. On the blades themselves\, a bryozoan can grow rapidly and completely cover a kelp blade within 3-4 weeks. \nKelp forests are found along the west coasts of North and South America\, the southern tip of Africa and Australia\, and islands near Antarctica. Giant kelp grows best in well mixed\, cool\, clear ocean water. In southern California\, giant kelp beds were common until the 1950s. Changes in water conditions and the near extinction of the southern sea otter\, which resulted in a population explosion of the purple sea urchin\, severely reduced the size and number of local kelp beds for several years. Due to restoration efforts\, kelp forests have recovered along Palos Verdes in the last several years. \n \nMudflats\nThe mudflat habitat is an enclosed coastal area with fresh and saltwater saturated sediments. Mudflats appear barren but conceal a rich variety of life. Many animals depend on this fragile and threatened habitat. Commercially important fish\, such as the California halibut\, use this habitat as a nursery ground which provides protection and a rich source of food. \nThe area surrounding the upper part of the mud is called the saltmarsh and teems with plants. Marsh plants provide shelter and living space for other organisms. The breakdown and decay of these plants produce organic debris which is a rich food source for a variety of invertebrates\, like fiddler crabs and amphipods. These animals are an attractive food source for the mudflat’s large bird population\, including the willet and snowy egret. Over 100 species of birds reside in or visit southern California mudflats. \nThe highest zone is dominated by salt grass which can tolerate only the occasional tidal flooding that occurs at this level. The middle zone is characterized by pickleweed which is more tolerant of tidal flooding. The lowest zone teems with eel grass which is one of the few marsh plants that can grow completely underwater. \nVisit the mudflat room at the aquarium to learn more about marsh plants and the many animals that depend on this important habitat. \n\n\n\nRocky Shores\nThe rocky shore is a difficult place to live\, yet some of the largest and most diverse populations of marine plants and animals can be found here. Explore how these animals have many different adaptations to protect themselves and find food. \nSeaweeds and microscopic plants produce the basic food of the ocean using the sun’s energy. Seaweeds then provide food for such grazers as snails\, sea hares and urchins. In the rocky shore\, sponges\, sea squirts\, mussels\, fanworms and barnacles filter tiny food particles from the water. Sea anemones and their relatives are hungry predators. These animals\, in turn\, are eaten by the flamboyant nudibranch slugs and other snails. \nThe richest habitat along our Californian rocky shores is the kelp forest. Kelp grows up to two feet a day and provides food and shelter for many other plants and animals. \nHunters of the seashore capture their prey in different ways. Sea stars use hundreds of tube feet. Worms and snails may drill or harpoon their prey\, while some crabs use powerful crushing claws. \nWhile visiting the touch tank you can experience a variety of rocky shore marine life such as a sea star or a prickly urchin. The touch tank expert will teach you the names and special traits of the marine life as well as answer any of your questions. \n \nOpen Ocean\nThe vast open ocean and deep sea are home to delicate jellyfish\, light-producing animals\, and other organisms ranging from the beautiful to the bizarre.\n\nBe sure to stop by the Sea Jelly Lab and see what’s growing in this open husbandry lab. Students\, volunteers and staff are often seen working on a variety of projects here. You might even be shown baby jellies on the microscope monitor.\nShapes\, colors\, and behavior of the fish in the Fish Diversity Tank reflect where and how these fish live.  See how sharks come in an amazing variety of sizes\, shapes\, and habitats and how some of the biggest sharks are gentle filter-feeders instead of ferocious predators.\nThe Channel Islands are major breeding grounds for many thousands of seabirds\, seals and sea lions.  Feeding and nesting habitats are displayed.\nWhales and dolphins\, descended from land mammals\, are the largest and most intelligent animals of the ocean.  The lives of these big mammals are examined in special exhibits on feeding\, a video of various cetaceans\, displays of whale and dolphin skeletons\, and recordings of whale sounds\n\n\n\nOur marine life is all from Southern California. Want to see some of them and learn more?\n\n\nTake a look around our exhibits to experience the marine life of Southern California.\n\n\n  \nHours\nMonday & Tuesday: Closed\nWednesday – Sunday: 12:00am – 5:00pm \nAdmission is free but donations are appreciated\n\n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nhttps://www.cabrillomarineaquarium.org/\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

SUMMARY:Now On Exhibit @ The FOWLER- Gosette Lubondo: Imaginary Trip
DESCRIPTION:NOW THRU NOVEMBER 13TH- Westwood Village\, UCLA\nThe Fowler Museum at UCLA presents \nGosette Lubondo: Imaginary Trip\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGosette Lubondo: Imaginary Trip\n\n\nExtended through September 18!\n\n\nCongolese photographer Gosette Lubondo’s Imaginary Trip series probes the intersections of memory and architecture\, examining tensions between residual colonial constructs and contemporary life in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Lubondo places herself in these pictures\, wearing a range of guises and interacting with other subjects. Bodies fluctuate in and out of corporeality; some are solidly in the present while others seem to emerge from a ghostly past. Staged in stylized\, almost nostalgic tableaux\, the characters inhabit one of two settings: a train car and a school\, both abandoned and devoid of the vitality that historically characterized these key nodes of colonial infrastructure. With each photograph\, Lubondo imagines her way through the lingering remnants of her country’s colonial past. Schools and stations once humming with movement and exchange now conjure the ghosts of a bygone waystation—a fitting metaphor for Lubondo’s journey and the memory of previous generations who passed through. \n\n\n\n\n\nPRESS RELEASE: Gosette Lubondo: Imaginary Trip \nGosette Lubondo: Imaginary Trip is organized by the Fowler Museum at UCLA and curated by Erica P. Jones\, curator of African arts\, and Elaine Ericksen Sullivan\, Andrew W. Mellon postdoctoral curatorial fellow at The Metropolitan Museum of Art\, NY. Support comes from the Fowler Contemporary Council Fund. \nImage: Gosette Lubondo (b. 1993\, Kinshasa\, DRC)\, Imaginary Trip I\, 2016; © Gosette Lubondo\, Courtesy Axis Gallery\, NY & NJ. \n\n\n  \n\n\n308 Charles E. Young Dr N\, Los Angeles\, CA 90024 \n\nFREE EVERY DAY! @ UCLA\nThe Fowler Museum at UCLA explores global arts and cultures with an emphasis on works from Africa\, Asia\, the Pacific\, and the Americas—past and present. The Fowler enhances understanding and appreciation of the diverse peoples\, cultures\, and religions of the world through dynamic exhibitions\, publications\, and public programs\, informed by interdisciplinary approaches and the perspectives of the cultures represented. \nAlso featured is the work of international contemporary artists presented within the complex frameworks of politics\, culture and social action. \nFowler Museum at UCLA provides exciting\, informative and thought-provoking exhibitions and events for the UCLA community and the people of greater Los Angeles and beyond. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAreas of the Collection\n\n\n\n\nARTS OF AFRICA AND THE AFRICAN DIASPORA\n \nOne of the largest and finest in the United States\, and one of the top twenty African collections worldwide\, this collection offers a superb representation of the arts of many African nations\, including objects from Senegal\, Nigeria\, Ghana\, Cameroon\, Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire)\, Kenya\, Zambia\, and South Africa. The Yoruba collection alone is one of the three finest in the world. It contains a spectacular array of beaded objects\, including a majestic throne\, elaborate chiefly gowns\, and sophisticated divination regalia. \nA collection of post-apartheid election materials and contemporary South African art is being developed\, as are a number of collections of popular urban arts from countries including Tanzania and Muslim Senegal. Recently\, more than 400 textiles made by the Kuba peoples of the Democratic Republic of the Congo were gifted by the Christensen Foundation. \nThe collection represents some of the finest examples of men’s embroidered raffia pile cloths and women’s appliqué cloths. This collection complements already significant holdings of West African textiles from countries such as Mali and Ghana\, including kente and adinkra cloth and Asafo flags. The museum also has significant holdings of arts from the African Americas\, notably arts of Haitian Vodou\, Brazil and Suriname. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nARTS OF THE AMERICAS\n \nThese holdings include a comprehensive collection of pre-Columbian ceramics with the best representations from West Mexico\, the Valley of Mexico\, and pre-Columbian Peru (with special strengths in the art of the Moche). The Fowler also possesses a cohesive collection of Guatemalan costumes; an extensive collection of Mexican clothing; textiles of Peru; and a comprehensive representation of field-collected market materials from Michoacan\, Mexico. Complementing the pre-Columbian collections are field collections of the Warao and Yecuana Indians of the Orinoco Delta of Venezuela and contemporary Latin American popular arts including Mexican trees of life\, Day of the Dead figures\, and masks from Metepec\, Oaxaca\, Michoacan\, Jalisco\, Peubla\, and Guanajuato. \nNative American materials from the U.S. and Canada are a small but significant part of the collection. Materials from the United States and Canada include well-known Northwest Coast material\, as well as a notable cross section of late nineteenth-century Inuit art and material culture. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nARTS OF ASIA AND THE PACIFIC \n \n  \nThe Fowler Museum at UCLA collections from Insular Southeast Asia\, including Indonesia\, the Philippines\, Malaysia\, and aboriginal Taiwan\, are among the strongest in the United States. The Indonesian and Philippine textiles reinforce the Fowler Museum’s standing as a major repository for the textile arts. Also included are significant collections of sculptural material from Sumatra\, Borneo\, Sulawesi\, and Luzon\, puppetry from Java and Bali\, basketry from Indonesia and Philippines\, and metalwork from the Philippines. The primary strength of the Pacific collections lies in materials from Papua New Guinea\, especially the Papuan Gulf\, Trobriand Islands\, Sepik River\, and Maprik region. Australia and Polynesia are also represented by sizeable collections\, including 45 rare Maori cloaks. \nThe collections from mainland Asia are smaller but growing rapidly\, due to current collecting priorities. A collection of betel-chewing paraphernalia\, representing several countries in South and Southeast Asia\, is considered one of the finest in the world. Other holdings include textiles from Bhutan\, Pakistan\, India and Japan\, baskets and decorative arts from Japan\, puppetry from China\, Thailand\, India\, and Turkey\, and art and artifacts from Nepal. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nARCHAEOLOGICAL COLLECTIONS\n \nThe Fowler Museum at UCLA also serves as a repository for archaeological collections acquired during research conducted by UCLA faculty\, staff\, students\, and other professional archaeologists. Documentation of the collections includes artifact catalogs\, excavation notes\, maps\, and photographs. These collections serve primarily as an archive for teaching and research. The Museum is compliant with guidelines mandates by the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) and has been signaled out by the State of California for its exemplary efforts. \nArchaeological collection areas include: \nCalifornia \nCollections from approximately 1100 sites\, mostly in Southern California. \nSouthwest \nSignificant collections from the Rainbow Bridge-Monument Valley Expedition of 1933-1938 and several Parowan Fremont sites in Utah excavated in the 1950’s\, and other Anasazi and Hohokam sites. \nMexico \nIncludes objects from 218 sites\, mostly in western and central Mexico. \nSudan \nThe Nubian/Egyptian fortress site at Askut is the source of approximately 60\,000 artifacts excavated by UCLA archaeologist Alexander Badawy in conjunction with the Aswan High Dam Salvage Campaign\, 1962-1964. \nOld World stone tool collection \nIncludes tools from Europe and the Middle East. \n\n\nMUSEUM HOURS\n\n\n\n\nAdmission is FREE \nMonday: closed\nTuesday: closed\nWednesday: 12 – 8pm\nThursday: 12 – 5pm\nFriday: 12 – 5pm\nSaturday: 12 – 5pm\nSunday: 12 – 5pm \n\n\n\n\n\nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nfowler.ucla.edu\n \n\n  \nFind more
