DESCRIPTION:EVERY WEDNESDAY- Marina del Rey\nThe Marina del Rey Sunset Series Regattas\, are a series of sailing races\, put on by The California Yacht Club. Races take place Wednesday from May – September. Best viewing spots are at Fisherman’s Village and Burton Chace Park. Have your camera ready around 7:30 to capture the multitude of sailboats returning to the harbor’s main channel. Enjoy the 2021 Sunset Series\, promising a new season of exciting Wednesday evening races.  Look for our traditional Racing and Cruising Division classes on the race course and a renewed focus on family-friendly fun. \n  \n  \n  \n \nCalifornia Yacht Club was started in 1922 in Los Angeles harbor by a group of dedicated yachtsman – most from Los Angeles Athletic Club and the rest active in other early yacht clubs of the day. They built a magnificent clubhouse with an anchorage of several hundred sail and power boats.\n\n\nOffshore speedboat contests and long distance cruising were active pursuits as well as sailing ‘ round the buoys. CYC’s trophy case was filled to bursting early on and the Club contributed many of the leaders of Southern California’s early yachting organizations. The Clubhouse was the scene of many Los Angeles area social activities and drew visitors from around the world.\n\n\nThe California Yacht Club is located in beautiful Marina del Rey\, which is the largest manmade small craft harbor in the Western Hemisphere. CYC is one of several clubs in the marina but is one of only two clubs that offers full services to its members. The current club facility was built in 1967 having relocated from its temporary facility elsewhere in the marina. The California Yacht Club was founded in 1922 in Wilmington Harbor near San Pedro. When Marina del Rey was constructed in the early 1960’s\, CYC relocated. \nToday the club serves its very active and diverse membership needs by providing club programs\, events and facilities that have earned the respect as being one of the leading Yacht Clubs in the country. In addition to the striking views offered from its clubhouse\, the club has one of the finest boat anchorages in the marina. Only club members are allowed to rent slips at the club. Members can enjoy the use of the club’s spa and heated pool\, enjoy a game of paddle tennis or relax in the Member’s Lounge. The clubhouse and offices are open Wednesday through Sunday although the docks and grounds are accessible at any time. Members can enjoy the many dining services offered in addition to the many formal and informal social events that the club is known for hosting. The heart and soul of any yacht club is its boating activities. CYC members are well known for their cruising\, sailing\, powerboating and rowing accomplishments. We recommend the Rey-class for your first Lightspeed Saber. Check the weapon class page for regulations to make sure the hilt you purchase is Lightspeed legal. \nNote that you do not need a Lightspeed blade to start practicing moves. You only need one once you begin competing. The standard blade that comes with your purchase should be fine for the time being. \n  \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSTEP 4 – LEARN BASIC MOVES AND CONCEPTS\nWe have tons of free information available for Lightspeed Saber fencing. But if you’re practicing alone\, you may want to learn our sequences. This is a growing library of technical exercises that help you fine tune your technique without a partner. We are closed on Thanksgiving\, Christmas Eve\, Christmas Day\, and New Year’s Day. \n\n\nBOOK YOUR GROUP HERE!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n20612 Laguna Canyon Road Laguna Beach\, CA 92651 \nHISTORY\nPacific Marine Mammal Center began as Friends of the Sea Lion in 1971 with only three volunteers: Jim Stauffer\, John Cunningham\, and Dr. Rose Ekeberg. \nIn the spring of 1971\, a little girl approached Jim Stauffer\, a Newport Beach lifeguard\, on the beach.  The little girl told Jim that she had seen a seal on the beach.  Jim hopped in his lifeguard jeep and went to go investigate.  What he found was a young Pacific harbor seal. When Jim placed the animal in his jeep\, it leaped right out.  Jim decided the animal must be healthy and just needed to rest\, so he returned to work.  \nConcern for the animal nagged at him all day. When Jim returned to check on the small seal\, it was still on the beach.  Jim picked up the seal and took it to the Dover Shores Animal Hospital\, where Dr. Rod La Shell examined the animal and found that it had lungworms.  With advice from Dr. La Shell\, Jim nursed the harbor seal back to health and released the animal back into the ocean. \n \nMISSION STATEMENT\n“The Pacific Marine Mammal Center rescues\, rehabilitates\, and releases marine mammals and inspires ocean stewardship through research\, education\, and collaboration.” \nRescue\n \nUnlike whales and dolphins\, seals and sea lions don’t have to remain in the water in order to survive. The animals beach themselves to be warm and dry when feeling ill. They seek rest on land for a variety of reasons and are not always in need of intervention. Our staff is trained to recognize animals suffering from infections\, malnourishment\, pneumonia\, gill net strangulation\, etc. which can harm an animal’s chance for survival. \nRehabilitation\n \nWhen a “patient” is admitted\, our staff performs all necessary procedures under the direction and protocols set by the Animal Care Director and our Veterinary Medical Director. During the course of rehabilitation\, animals require a variety of treatments such as administration of antibiotics and subcutaneous fluids\, tube feeding\, force-feeding\, wound care\, etc. \nMost animals come in dehydrated and the most effective means to provide fluids and nourishment is through tube feeding. The process requires the blending of fish\, electrolytes\, warm water\, vitamins\, and medication into a fish formula. This formula is fed to the animals by inserting a flexible tube into the stomach using large syringes. As soon as the animals are hydrated and stable\, we wean them to eat whole fish. \nRelease\n \nOnce an animal has gained an optimal weight and is competing for food\, it’s ready for release. Prior to release\, each animal is tagged with an identification number. The color-coded tags indicate the animal has been rehabilitated and helps identify the specific animal and care center in case the animal needs care in the future. We strive to return every one of our patients back to the wild once their care with us is complete. \nEducation\nIt is not enough to rescue and rehabilitate these animals. We must communicate what needs to be done so that positive change can happen. PMMC strives to inspire ocean stewardship in all generations through sharing the stories of the animals we assist. Over 50\,000 people learn about conservation by talking with our education docents and interacting with exhibits in our visitor yard each year. We welcome over 7\,000 children\, most through our free programs for at-risk communities\, in our onsite experiential-based education programs that teach the importance of marine science and eco-friendly behavior. Our outreach team engages thousands of more people in offsite programs\, which share the importance of community involvement. Additionally\, through distance learning technology\, our education department brings conservation messaging to children and adults all over the nation and internationally. \nResearch\n \nAn important part of marine mammal recovery is ongoing research. Research is being done to find the pathological conditions that affect the marine mammals of Southern California. These half hour weekly sessions are open to all who are interested in learning how to live more presently in life. Mark your calendars and surrender to the irresistible allure of Concerts on Canon at Beverly Cañon Gardens\, where a symphony of unforgettable experiences awaits. \n\nCONCERT LINE UP\n\n\nJULY 27 SUSIE HANSEN LATIN BAND\n\nThe Susie Hansen Latin Band plays salsa and Latin jazz — salsa\, cumbia\, merengue\, cha cha cha\, bolero and bachata.  The band has been together for 32 years.  Susie plays the electric violin and sings\, and the the Long Beach Press-Telegram has called her “a hot Latin fiddler and bandleader.”  Lead vocalist Daniel Castillo from Venezuela also plays congas.  Electric guitarist Kaspar Abbo from London England sings lead vocals in English.  Also in her six-piece band are piano\, bass and drums/timbales. \nHansen has performed with Cuba’s premier dance band\, Los Van Van\, both in Los Angeles and in Havana\, Cuba.  She has also played with Orquesta Aragon\, Cuba’s preeminent Charanga band.  She performed or recorded with Tito Puente\, Paquito d’Rivera\, Vikki Carr\, Macy Gray\, Orquesta Broadway\, Giovani Hidalgo\, Jose Rizo’s Jazz on the Latin Side All-Stars and others. \nSusie also pursued an education in math and computer science\, ultimately earning two master’s degrees in engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)\, but ultimately her musical career took precedence.  She has released three albums on the Jazz Caliente label.   An original Latin jazz song Susie wrote\, “Las Calles de Chicago\,” has been on rotation with Sirius Satellite Radio for eleven years.  The song\, “La Salsa Nunca Se Acaba\,” has been popular across the country and around the world for the past seventeen years\, regularly selling hundreds of downloads to this day.  Her CD “Solo Flight” was named by Latin Beat Magazine as one of its “Top One Hundred Independent Latin Jazz Recordings.” \n\nAUGUST 3 RUMBA ACOUSTIC BAND\n\n \nRumba Acoustic band has been performing Persian all time favorite songs for the last ten years in the Los Angeles area with their own unique approach. \n\n\nAUGUST 10 SMOKIN’ COBRAS\n \nThe Smokin’ Cobras perform classic AM radio’s greatest hits from the fabulous 50’s\, rockin’ 60’s\, funky 70’s and restro 80’s.  Hit songs from soul\, to rock and pop\, and back again.  High energy.
