DESCRIPTION:EVERY THURSDAY 12:30–1:00PM- Online via ZOOM. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWould you like to learn how to meditate? Join the Hammer Museum each Thursday for Mindful Awareness Meditation Online. Mindfulness Meditation is the moment-by-moment process of actively and openly observing one’s physical\, mental\, and emotional experiences. Mindfulness has scientific support as a means to reduce stress\, improve attention\, boost the immune system\, reduce emotional reactivity\, and promote a general sense of health and well-being. These half hour weekly sessions are open to all who are interested in learning how to live more presently in life. No special clothing is required\, and participants are welcome to join for five minutes or enjoy the entire 30 minutes.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThese free weekly drop-in sessions usually take place in the Hammer’s Billy Wilder Theater but are now offered live online via Zoom. \nMindful Awareness Meditation is provided by UCLA & The Hammer Museum\n  \nff \n\nSessions are led by Diana Winston and other instructors from the UCLA Mindful Awareness Research Center. DESCRIPTION:OPEN THURSDAY – SUNDAY- Santa Monica\nThe Santa Monica History Museum was founded under the “Historical Activities Committee” of Santa Monica’s Centennial Celebration in 1975 and by a public poll\, with their goal to collect\, preserve\, and be the caretaker of history. Its name at that time was the Santa Monica Historical Society and it was designated as the official collector and preserver of the history\, art\, and culture of the Santa Monica Bay Area. Former Mayor Clo Hoover\, the first woman mayor of Santa Monica\, was elected the first president. \n\nThe museum\, one of the largest in the country for a city the size of Santa Monica\, has grown far beyond expectations with an expansive collection of artifacts\, photographs\, and memorabilia. Thousands of hours have been dedicated to public education and museum services. \n \nWith the help of Louise and Bob Gabriel who had been active in the community for years and had a strong love for Santa Monica and its history took on the responsibility to make the museum a reality.  Within three years\, with determination\, perseverance\, and countless hours of work\, Bob headed the fundraising committee and raised the necessary funds. Louise was able to get all the furnishings for the museum donated by companies that were going out of business. Bob found a temporary rent‐free location on Colorado Avenue. \n\n\nOur Mission\nThe Santa Monica History Museum’s mission is to collect\, preserve and share the history and culture of Santa Monica for generations to come. \n\n\n\n\nOur Vision\nThe Santa Monica History Museum is the steward of the rich history of the Santa Monica Bay area. We are committed to enriching our community by providing public access to our extensive collection with interpretive exhibitions\, public programs\, community partnerships\, and through archival and research services. \n\n\n\nCURRENT EXHIBITION FROM APRIL 1 – DECEMBER 23\, 2022\nBroadway to Freeway:\nLife and Times of a Vibrant Community\n \nIn the mid-20th century\, the Broadway neighborhood was a thriving\, tight-knit community in Santa Monica. Built by African American\, Mexican American\, and immigrant communities\, the Broadway neighborhood was a haven for those who were excluded from other parts of the city by racist and anti-immigrant policies and practices. \nThis exhibition tells the story of how residents built Broadway into a flourishing community of color – and how the Interstate 10 freeway destroyed it in the 1960s. The vibrant lives of pioneering individuals – like the first African American teacher and social worker hired in Santa Monica – are knitted into the neighborhood they built together. The community populated Broadway with welcoming schools\, homes\, and businesses – from beauty parlors and jazz clubs\, to the malt shop\, tortilleria\, and Jewish deli. \n \nFeaturing period photographs\, advertisements\, oral histories\, and songs\, the exhibition draws on the wealth of archival material collected by the Quinn Research Center\, which is dedicated to preserving the history of African American life in Santa Monica. \nToday\, little evidence remains of the community on the blocks between 13th Street and 20th Street\, once the heart of the Broadway neighborhood. The lineup also includes sweet harmonies and a tight rhythm section consisting of Christopher Manjarrez (bass)\, Francisco Flores (guitar)\, Bryan Ponce (guitar/vocals)\, Luis Carpio (drums/vocals)\, and Adriana Flores (vocals). Together they are a part of a community of musicians who are tying together both the nostalgic and classic with the innovative and new to bring a unique sounds to soul music. \nThee Sinseers are part of the great Colemine Records family lead by Terry Cole\, who released their first singles for the songs “It Was Only A Dream” and “I Don’t Mind” in 2019\, with a full length releasing in 2022. Additionally\, Curtis has performed with orchestras throughout Southern California\, including Broadway shows at the Ahmanson Theater. He has been a recording musician in Hollywood on many movie soundtracks\, television shows and cartoons\, and has toured extensively throughout the United States and Japan. Curtis’ wide-ranging musical expertise and background in entertainment will serve him well in his new role as conductor of the Long Beach Municipal Band. The table exudes an extraordinary aura\, compelling one to walk underneath the table and conjuring the physical memory of being under the table of one’s childhood home. Complicated and powerful\, the work offers fresh ideas of what a table\, sculpture\, and memory can mean. \n  \n  \n \nUsing the recognizable form of a balloon twisted into the shape of a dog\, Koons has frozen a moment in time\, exaggerating both scale and material. \nBalloon Dog (Blue) is literal and abstract. In its original sense\, the term “museum” meant a spot dedicated to the muses – “a place where man’s mind could attain a mood of aloofness above everyday affairs.” By far the most important museum of antiquity was the great institution at Alexandria founded by Ptolemy Philadelphus in the third century before Christ\, (an endeavor supported by a grant from the treasury). And no treatment of the museum would be complete without mention of Noah’s Ark in which we find the complete Museum of Natural History the world has ever seen. \nThe Museum of Jurassic Technology traces its origins to this period when many of the essential collections of today were beginning to take form. What follows is pure delight as the actors’ attempt to incorporate ever more fanciful suggestions. This rarely performed comedy written by a friend of Shakespeare’s is a wild joyride of a play and a love letter to the theatrical invention. Perfect for family audiences. \nThis Years New Location\nDue to ongoing construction at our usual site\, this season’s Festival site is at the Dell at the top of the Old Zoo. It’s the same lovely location where we presented The Tempest in 2021\, but it is considerably smaller than our usual site on the main lawn of the Old Zoo. The Dell has a capacity of 450 audience members so we are requiring registration. (Registration is free! All events are admission-free!) \nUnlike last year\, there are no reserved pods. Seating is open General Admission\, first come\, first served. Registration opens Friday\, June 24 and all performances will be available to reserve your picnic spot on the grass. \nDo you want reserved chairs? Actual chairs with a back in a reserved bank of seats?
