In 1922 Will bought the property above Sunset Boulevard commanding a view of western Los Angeles\, Santa Monica and the Pacific Ocean\, where he built a small weekend cottage. In 1926\, he built a polo field on the land. In 1928 Will\, his wife Betty\, and their three children – Will Jr.\, Mary\, and Jimmy – moved to the ranch\, and the home was enlarged to it’s present size of thirty-one rooms. \n \nToday\, the grounds and the ranch buildings are maintained as they were when the family lived here. His ranch reflects his roots in horsemanship\, starting with the polo field\, which is the first thing you see when you look south from the parking area. The field is the only outdoor polo field in Los Angeles county. Featured in many movies and TV shows\, the polo field features a gentle slope that forms an area for viewing the polo action. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nUp from the parking area are the ranch buildings\, including the visitor center\, which once the ranch guest house. The visitor center features a film on the life of Will Rogers\, literature and an audio tour of the grounds. The ranch buildings and grounds are maintained as they were when the Rogers family lived there in the late 1920s and 1930s. But the park is more than just an historic site\, it’s also a working ranch. The park still retains many of the western equestrian activities that were a part of Will Rogers’ life. Up the hill from the main guest ranch\, above the green expanse of lawn\, are the stables\, which have recently been renovated. \n \nIf you come out and watch our games\, be aware that an enormous amount of “behind the scenes” preparation has made this event possible. Each player has two to four horses; which require feeding\, cleaning and daily exercise during the week preceding each game. Most of the players board their horses elsewhere\, which means that earlier in the day\, they trailered their horses to the park for the game. The horses are then brushed and “tacked up” in their special saddles\, bridle and leg protection wraps. The players dress in their white joudhpers\, team shirts\, boots\, knee guards and riding spurs. Between chukkers (periods of play)\, players and grooms\, frantically change horses and adjust their tack. A thousand details can go wrong (and often do)! It is located between BIG 5\, DSW & Wells Fargo \nBut everyone seems to know each other.  And they’re all super-friendly.  As well as ready to talk cars well past the 10 AM cut-off. \nSo\, the location is a strip mall at the corner of Hawthorne and Artesia.  And it’s technically in Torrance.  But it’s right on the border of Redondo Beach. \nThere was a Starbucks in the strip mall. SUMMARY:Train Rides in Torrance
DESCRIPTION:EVERY 1st SUNDAY & 3rd SATURDAY- Wilson Park\, Torrance\nSouthern California Live Steamers provides mini-train rides on public run days every first Sunday of the month from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and every third Saturday of the month from noon to 3 p.m. All SCLS members are City of Torrance volunteers with annual fingerprint clearance and are not paid for their time expended on maintaining the trains and facility\, and providing the rides.Donations are appreciated. \n  \n \nIn 1987\, for the Torrance 75th anniversary event\, the City of Torrance asked SCLS if they could set up a small track on the back end of Wilson Park. At the time this was a vacant lot\, no trees and only weeds for vegetation. Considerable effort was expended by both the City and SCLS to prepare the area and lay the tracks necessary to run the trains. During the City’s 75th Anniversary Celebration in October 1987\, the free train rides were so well received by the public that the City sought to have SCLS run the trains on a regular basis. On May 11\, 1990\, the City and SCLS entered into a 25-year License Agreement allowing SCLS to provide free train rides at Wilson Park on a regular basis. A new home was found! \nANOTHER 25 YEARS \nThe mini-train rides have become a popular feature of Wilson Park. Originally\, free train rides were offered once a month on the first Sunday of each month. Today\, SCLS provides free train rides twice a month on the first Sunday and third Saturday of each month\, and on special occasions. The City and SCLS entered into another 25-year lease agreement thru May 11\, 2040. \nSouthern California Live Steamers\, Inc. operates as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization under IRS rules and is a registered California non-profit corporation. All of the income for the operation of SCLS is derived by donations from its members\, passengers and corporate sponsors\, and thru fundraisers. SCLS does not charge the passengers for rides on public run days\, though donations are accepted from our riders on public run days which is on the 1st Sunday and 3rd Saturday of each month. Funds received are used to pay SCLS expenses such as insurance\, maintenance costs\, facility upgrades\, fuel\, track repairs\, future track projects\, and other expenses. DESCRIPTION:OPEN EVERY FRIDAY-SUNDAY- Hollywood\nThe Hollywood Heritage Museum\, is located in the Lasky-DeMille Barn\, which was built in 1901.  The story of the early Hollywood motion picture industry and the historic Hollywood community is told through archival photographs\, historic documents\, movie props and related memorabilia.  Visitors experience the actual structure where Cecil B. DeMille’s office exists\, furnished with selected personal DeMille belongings\, and where countless movies were filmed and studio staff worked and played. \nOn December 27\, 1956\, the Lasky-DeMille Barn was designated California State Historic Landmark No. 554\, recognizing the significant role the building played in the birth of the Hollywood motion picture industry.  Since 1985\, Hollywood Heritage\, Inc. has funded the preservation\, restoration and maintenance of the barn. It’s the oldest existing motion picture production building in Hollywood\, having been established as the Burns-Revier Studio in 1912\, and becoming the Jesse L. Lasky Feature Play Company in 1913.  The Lasky Company merged with Adolph Zuckor’s Famous Players in 1916\, becoming Famous Players-Lasky and merging with Paramount Distributing Company\, finally becoming Paramount Pictures Corporation. In 2014\, the Lasky-DeMille Barn was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. [See the Time Line on the Museum link for a more detailed history of the barn]. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nVISITING THE MUSEUM\nThe Hollywood Heritage Museum is open Friday\, Saturday and Sunday from noon until 4 pm. As we share our ample parking lot with the Hollywood Bowl\, the museum is occasionally closed when the Bowl has an event.  If you are traveling a long way to visit us\, it might be a good idea to phone first to make sure we are open: (323) 874-2276. \n\n\nPARKING\nParking is free. There is a large parking area on the east side of Highland Avenue\, in front of the museum.  There is no entrance facing Highland Avenue.  You have to go around the corner either on Milner Road or Odin Street and immediately turn into the lot.  If there are parking lot attendants at a barricade\, tell them that you are visiting the museum. \nPUBLIC TRANSPORTATION\nThe Metro subway station closest to the Museum is the Hollywood-Highland stop.  We are located approximately a half-mile north on Highland Avenue\, about a 12-minute walk. \nBECOME A DOCENT:\nHollywood Heritage is a volunteer driven organization. Our docents assist museum guests and help with our Barn programs\, as well as many other activities associated with historic preservation issues and the day-to-day activities that make our organization so vital.  If you are interested in becoming involved\, click here. \n  \n \nHOLLYWOOD HERITAGE ARCHIVE:\nHollywood Heritage maintains an archive of historic photographs\, documents\, and other material related to the film industry and the community.  Our archive also includes considerable holdings on Hollywood real estate history and buildings of architectural significance.  We continue to seek material related to our dual mission of industry and community history.  Questions regarding our archive and donations procedures should be directed to our Collections Manager\, Richard Adkins. \nDONATION OF PHYSICAL ITEMS:\nHollywood Heritage welcomes donations both monetary and physical objects.  Donated items fall into two categories. \nFor resale in the Museum Store:  The museum store contains new and used items.  The older items are all donated to Hollywood Heritage and include books on the motion picture industry and its participants\, and books on the Los Angeles area.  It also includes used DVDs\, VHS tapes and other electronic storage of motion pictures\, as well as related items. These types of donated items can be dropped off at the museum along with the donor’s name and address so that\, if desired\, donor recognition and/or a tax letter can be provided by the Collections Manager. \nFor Hollywood Heritage Archive:  These are items that Hollywood Heritage’s curator agrees are compatible with our collection.  An appointment may be set up with our Collections Manager.  Much of the collection has been donated by individuals and families with relatives who contributed to the film industry and the Hollywood community\, often with the goal of preserving their relatives’ participation in Hollywood. DESCRIPTION:OPEN THURSDAY – SUNDAY- Santa Monica\nThe Santa Monica History Museum was founded under the “Historical Activities Committee” of Santa Monica’s Centennial Celebration in 1975 and by a public poll\, with their goal to collect\, preserve\, and be the caretaker of history. Its name at that time was the Santa Monica Historical Society and it was designated as the official collector and preserver of the history\, art\, and culture of the Santa Monica Bay Area. Former Mayor Clo Hoover\, the first woman mayor of Santa Monica\, was elected the first president. \n\nThe museum\, one of the largest in the country for a city the size of Santa Monica\, has grown far beyond expectations with an expansive collection of artifacts\, photographs\, and memorabilia. Thousands of hours have been dedicated to public education and museum services. \n \nWith the help of Louise and Bob Gabriel who had been active in the community for years and had a strong love for Santa Monica and its history took on the responsibility to make the museum a reality.  Within three years\, with determination\, perseverance\, and countless hours of work\, Bob headed the fundraising committee and raised the necessary funds. Louise was able to get all the furnishings for the museum donated by companies that were going out of business. Bob found a temporary rent‐free location on Colorado Avenue. \n\n\nOur Mission\nThe Santa Monica History Museum’s mission is to collect\, preserve and share the history and culture of Santa Monica for generations to come. \n\n\n\n\nOur Vision\nThe Santa Monica History Museum is the steward of the rich history of the Santa Monica Bay area. We are committed to enriching our community by providing public access to our extensive collection with interpretive exhibitions\, public programs\, community partnerships\, and through archival and research services. \n\n\n\nCURRENT EXHIBITION FROM APRIL 1 – DECEMBER 23\, 2022\nBroadway to Freeway:\nLife and Times of a Vibrant Community\n \nIn the mid-20th century\, the Broadway neighborhood was a thriving\, tight-knit community in Santa Monica. Built by African American\, Mexican American\, and immigrant communities\, the Broadway neighborhood was a haven for those who were excluded from other parts of the city by racist and anti-immigrant policies and practices. \nThis exhibition tells the story of how residents built Broadway into a flourishing community of color – and how the Interstate 10 freeway destroyed it in the 1960s. The vibrant lives of pioneering individuals – like the first African American teacher and social worker hired in Santa Monica – are knitted into the neighborhood they built together. The community populated Broadway with welcoming schools\, homes\, and businesses – from beauty parlors and jazz clubs\, to the malt shop\, tortilleria\, and Jewish deli. \n \nFeaturing period photographs\, advertisements\, oral histories\, and songs\, the exhibition draws on the wealth of archival material collected by the Quinn Research Center\, which is dedicated to preserving the history of African American life in Santa Monica. \nToday\, little evidence remains of the community on the blocks between 13th Street and 20th Street\, once the heart of the Broadway neighborhood. Perhaps a chromed out\, spoked up low rider with a banana seat and some Ape hangers?  Maybe even a three wheeler trike with a sick ass sound system?  A custom beach cruiser with enough LED’s to light up LAX?  Whatever your jam\, you will be in good company at the VELP! \n \n“We are a group of Bicycle fanatics who ride every Sunday at Sunset in Venice Beach promoting Bicycle Safety.  Come join us for the Electric Light Parade must have safety lights and wheel lights will be available for purchase.  We meet every Sunday at Sunset\, at Windward Plaza on the Boardwalk\, down from the World famous Venice Sign.” The group travels up the Venice Bike Path to the Venice Pier\, in Marina del Rey at Hinano’s Bar. \n  \n \nVenice Beach\, which served as a US hippy hub of the 1960s\, is now seeing dozens of locals cruising its boardwalk late at night with brightly glowing rides. \nThe bicycle enthusiasts say they fit right in with the hundreds of performers\, artists and musicians that already call Venice Beach home. \n \n\nThis event promotes Bicycle Safety at Night.  As much as 100 people show up each Sunday night for a chance to join the community for few hours of fun. DESCRIPTION:Barbara Kruger\, Untitled (Questions)- DTLA\n\n  \n\n\nMOCA has reinstalled the monumental wall work by Los Angeles–based artist Barbara Kruger (b. New York 1945)\, Untitled (Questions) (1990/2018). The emblematic red\, white\, and blue artwork was originally commissioned by MOCA in 1989 for the exhibition A Forest of Signs: Art in the Crisis of Representation\, and was last installed in 1990 on the south wall of MOCA’s building (now The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA). The work holds an iconic place in the collective memory of Los Angeles’s art community and is considered one of the museum’s curatorial highlights over its forty-year history. \n\nThis iteration is installed on the north facade of The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA\, facing Temple Street and measuring 30 by 191 feet. Asking nine questions including “Who is beyond the law?\,” “Who is bought and sold?\,” and “Who is free to choose?\,” the work points to issues of patriotism\, civic engagement\, and power relations. In connection with the work\, MOCA led a series of voter registration efforts during the 2018 midterms\, and will continue these efforts in advance of the 2020 general election. \n\nThis project was initiated by MOCA Director Klaus Biesenbach and is organized by MOCA Senior Curator Bennett Simpson. \nThis installation of Barbara Kruger’s Untitled (Questions) is generously supported by an anonymous donor. \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\nONE MUSEUM. Tempo Run’s are an effective way of building a runner’s ability to sustain faster speeds over time. \nFREE Long Run\nThe Long Run is measured in distance rather than time. Distance measurement  helps to build a foundation for longer aerobic runs and races. The run is either 4 or 6 miles distances at an easy pace. \nWe participate in  a proper Warm Up with the use of Adidas Running app to monitor our progress. We also\, focus on relaxing at a slower pace while ending with a proper Cool Down. \n\nFREE Virtual Nutrition \nTune in each week to nutrition coach Lottie’s Nutriton Tlks. In this session Lottie will have a different guest each week where they will create a recipe together and discuss topics around fueling plus nutrition. DESCRIPTION:OPEN AGAIN 24/7- Santa Monica\nThe Santa Monica Stairs are actually two different stairways\, both of which descend from Santa Monica’s Adelaide Drive to Entrada Drive (Santa Monica Canyon). \n \nThe mis-named “7th Street stairway” has its upper end across from 526 Adelaide Drive\, and leads down to Entrada Drive\, across the street from Amalfi Drive. It consists of 152 wooden steps and 18 concrete steps in a straight path\, about 5.5 feet wide\, separated by three horizontal landings. Altogether the 170 steps produce an overall vertical change of about 110 feet. \n \n\n \nThe “4th-street stairway” begins at the intersection of 4th Street and Adelaide\, leading down to Ocean Avenue Extension. It consists solely of concrete flights interconnected by right- and left-hand turns. There are 189 steps producing an overall vertical change of about 115 feet. \n  \n \nOn the Pacific Palisades side of Santa Monica Canyon is the so-called “secret Mesa stairway”\, which is much less used although it has more steps than either of the above. The base is on Mesa Road\, next to 404 Mesa and about a 10-minute walk from West Channel Road. 201 concrete steps rise about 100 feet to the intersection of Upper Mesa Road and Amalfi Drive. There is no railing except for the topmost 18 steps\, so descending requires caution. (The stairs are sometimes incorrectly called the “La Mesa stairs”–La Mesa Drive is elsewhere in Santa Monica\, and there is a La Mesa Stairway in the city of La Mesa in San Diego County.) \nSeveral other lengthy staircases nearby descend from Palisades Park bluffs to overpasses crossing Pacific Coast Highway to the beach: \n  \n\nThe northernmost crossing near Montana Avenue has 172 steps with a vertical change from Palisades Park to the pedestrian path on the beach of about 110 feet.Separate ramps\, one from the vicinity of Idaho Ave and the other from the top of the California Incline\, converge and share the same bridge crossing to the beach\, with a vertical change of 105 feet from Idaho\, 100 from California.
