An anchor on the Sunset Strip since its opening in 1964\, the Whisky A Go-Go has played host to rock ‘n’ roll’s most important bands\, from the Doors\, Janis Joplin\, and Led Zeppelin to today’s up-and-coming new artists. \n \nOn January 16\, 1964\, a small club on the Sunset Strip opened its doors for the first time.\n\nIt was The Whisky a Go Go\, the first-ever live music venue to be inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame and the most iconic club on the Strip. Founded by Mario Maglieri\, Elmer Valentine\, and Phil Tanzini – The Whisky had to spell its name without the ‘e’ in whiskey because Los Angeles city zoning laws didn’t allow any club to be named after alcohols (The Whisky constantly had problems with the city and for a while had the name “The Whisk?”). Settling into its current iteration around 1975\, it was an early stage for drag and gay cabaret acts and a safe space for non-identifying Latinx locals. In the early 2000s\, it gained notoriety as one of the central hubs and incubators for the blossoming indie music scene. \n \nBands like Rilo Kiley\, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club\, and The Silversun Pickups all started on our stage. As the longest-standing\, independent\, live music venue in Silverlake\, the blending of the two subcultures has cemented its place in local history. The Silverlake Lounge is a place of diversity and a safe space for Creatives and the Queer BIPOC community. It is one of the few properties left that serves the whole of its community. \nOur continued mission is to produce nightly entertainment that presents independent\, emerging artists to greater Los Angeles and its welcomed travelers while remaining a local watering hole for the East Side neighborhood. After all\, the museum was originally designed to house his fine collection of old-master paintings and drawings\, as well as works on paper by Honoré Daumier and his 19th-century contemporaries. \n\n\n\n\n\nBut in the ensuing decades\, as the art world has continued to evolve\, so has Los Angeles — and so has the Hammer Museum\, which is now a part of the UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture. In 1994\, UCLA assumed management and operations of the museum\, and the Hammer kept its original purpose but also expanded its mission. Today\, the Hammer has a wide reputation for innovation and for showcasing new artists. \n  \n\nNew Contemporary Gallery\n\n  \n“L.A. has become a hotbed of contemporary art and artists\,” says Ann Philbin\, the museum’s director since 1999\, “and the Hammer has become a premier institution where they are shown.” \n  \n\n\n4th-Floor-Offices\n\n  \nUnder Philbin’s leadership\, the museum has expanded its collections and programs\, including establishing the Hammer Projects series of exhibitions and installations featuring local\, national and international emerging artists. It also launched the Made in L.A. biennial\, now in its fourth edition. Through these and other innovations\, the Hammer has quadrupled its attendance to about 250\,000 a year. \n  \nLindbrook Terrace\n  \nMeanwhile\, Occidental Petroleum\, which occupied the adjoining building\, relocated to Houston\, Texas. So the Hammer has begun a major\, multiyear expansion that will take the museum far into the 21st century. \nEarlier this year\, the Hammer announced a $180 million capital campaign. Almost half of those funds will be used to expand gallery and other public spaces\, while the rest will go toward exhibitions\, programming and an endowment. The museum has already raised more than $130 million\, including $30 million from L.A. philanthropists Lynda and Stewart ’59\, J.D. ’62 Resnick and $20 million from Hammer board chair Marcy Carsey. \n  \n  \nAnnex\n  \nThe renovations and additions being designed by Michael Maltzan Architecture\, who was commissioned in 2000 to create the museum’s 2003 master plan\, include: \n• A newly designed entrance at Wilshire and Westwood boulevards to maximize the museum’s visual presence at one of the nation’s busiest intersections. In the coming years\, the museum will also benefit from a planned Metro Purple Line station across Wilshire. \n• More than 10\,000 square feet of additional exhibition space for contemporary art. \n• New permanent collection galleries and a study room for the Grunwald Center Collection. \n• 20\,000 square feet of enhanced public spaces\, including a new restaurant. \n• A new and more accessible Hammer Store. \n  \n  \n2nd Floor B Side\n  \nIn all\, the expansion will provide 60 percent more gallery space for exhibitions. The museum will remain open during construction\, and admission will continue to be free. “We’re accessible to everyone\, and that keeps people coming back\,” Philbin says. “L.A. has been growing as one of the world’s most exciting cultural creative communities\, and the museum has grown alongside it.” \n  \n\n  \nBookstore\nHISTORY OF THE HAMMER MUSEUM\nThe Hammer Museum opened to the public in November 1990. Founded by Dr. Armand Hammer\, former Chairman of Occidental Petroleum Corporation\, the Museum was designed by architect Edward Larrabee Barnes. Financed by Occidental\, the Museum was built adjacent to the Corporation’s international headquarters in Westwood. At that time\, the Museum featured galleries for Dr. Hammer’s collections — old master paintings and drawings\, and a collection of works on paper by Honore Daumier and his contemporaries — as well as galleries for traveling exhibitions. Dr. Hammer passed away in December 1990\, three weeks after the opening of the Museum leaving many spaces unfinished. \nIn 1992\, the Museum began negotiations with its neighbor\, University of California\, Los Angeles (UCLA)\, to assume the management and operations of the institution. In April 1994\, the partnership with UCLA was finalized and the following year the University relocated its collections and the staff of the Wight Art Gallery and the Grunwald Center for the Graphic Arts to the Hammer. The Museum also assumed responsibility for the Franklin D. Murphy Sculpture Garden\, located at the north end of the UCLA campus. \nHenry Hopkins\, then director of the Wight gallery and professor in the Department of Art\, became director of the Museum until his retirement in 1998. In 1999 Ann Philbin was named director and has developed a strong and original institutional identity and built a national and international reputation for thematic contemporary exhibitions\, scholarly historical exhibitions\, and contemporary artists’ projects. During her tenure the Hammer has formed a Hammer Contemporary Collection which now holds over 2\,000 artworks. In addition\, Philbin has overseen substantial renovations to the museum’s building\, including the completion of the 300-seat Billy Wilder Theater and museum café. With Philbin’s direction\, the museum instituted the internationally acclaimed Hammer Projects\, a series of more than one hundred contemporary exhibitions and installations featuring local\, national\, and international emerging artists. You’ll see dinosaurs\, gems and minerals\, gardens\, Latin American treasures\, and beloved dioramas to name a few. Discoveries are made here every day—by scientists\, historians\, and you! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOngoing Exhibitions \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDinosaur Encounters\n\nGet close to a living\, breathing dinosaur! \nFun\, educational\, and interactive\, Dinosaur Encounters features The Natural History Museum’s life-size dinosaur puppets. Each presenter focuses on a different topic\, including theories on dinosaur behavior\, extinction\, adaptation\, and the relationship between birds and dinosaurs. Please note these are not small hand puppets. The museum’s puppets are very large\, realistic interpretations of wild animals. Please prepare small children accordingly. Dinosaur Encounters is family friendly\, and each presentation is about 20 minutes long. \nWe also have a special Sensory Friendly Dinosaur Encounters show on the first Saturday of every month. Our Sensory Friendly performance provides a warm welcome to guests who need a little less stimulating environment and the opportunity to move around during the show. \nDinosaur Encounters takes place at the North American Mammal Hall\, Level 2. \nLearn more about our Live Theater shows. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n  \n\n \nDiscovery Center\n\nDig for dinosaurs\, wonder at live insects\, and organize your own diorama. Discover the natural world! The Ralph M. Parsons Foundation Discovery Center at the The Natural History Museum has something for every investigator. Pretend to be a paleontologist in the Paleo Playzone; \n  \n \nmarvel at the beauty and variety of bugs in Bugtopia; and create your own nature scene in the Moveable Museum. You can even get a backstage peek of our puppeteers suiting up for their popular Dinosaur Encounters show. \n  \n\n \nButterfly Pavilion and Spider Pavilion: \nSeasonally\, you can wander through the changing ecosystem with over 30 species of fluttering butterflies all around you\, or witness arachnids up close and personal. \n\n  \n \n\nNature Gardens \nExplore the Nature Gardens\, our urban wildlife wonderland. Over 600 kinds of plants—including California natives and others from around the world—make a home for birds\, butterflies\, lizards\, squirrels\, and more! \n\n\n\nGalleries of  Natural History\n \nAs education professionals\, we understand that an appreciation of science and the natural world reaches people through many different channels. We are committed to removing any barriers that we might find standing between the members of our community and their connection to science and nature. \n\n\nNatural History Museum occupies a special place in Expo Park: It’s one of L.A.’s oldest cultural institutions\, and today\, it’s the anchor of an emerging cultural\, educational\, and entertainment hub in Exposition Park. We show off extraordinary specimens in exhibitions such as Age of Mammals\, the Dinosaur Hall\, the Gem and Mineral Hall\, and our beloved dioramas. We recommend reserving tickets in advance to guarantee museum entry and to skip the line\, because of high attendance on these days. \n\nFree Museum Admission Daily For:    \nCA EBT cardholders with ID \nCA teachers with ID \nActive or retired military with ID \nChildren 2 and under \nAdditional tickets must be purchased to see special exhibitions\, Butterfly and Spider Pavilion\, 3D Theater\, and other special ticketed experiences. \n\nFree Hours for L.A. County Residents\nL.A. County residents receive free museum admission Monday – Friday from 3-5 pm.
