SUMMARY:HOKALI Beach Cleanup Day
DESCRIPTION:EVERY 2nd of the MONTH- Venice Beach \nBeach Cleanup by HOKALI Surf Lessons at Venice Beach 1800 Ocean Front Walk\, Venice\, CA \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCalling All Venice Beach Surf Community. All the HOKALI Community of surfers will be cleaning the beaches together\, on the second day of every month!! “What day is that man?”\, you may ask. Ahh\, that’s an easy one Dude! It’s the Second Day. \nHOKALI is announcing guidelines for individuals to conduct solo beach clean ups as long as local governing bodies allow for public beach access. A solo cleanup is defined as an individual cleanup by one person or household unit\, not necessarily organized by the chapter\, but promoted as an activity for the public. \nThe following requirements are outlined to assist in evaluating your ability to conduct a solo beach cleanup. \n\nYour state and local governing agency allows access to the beach;\n\n\nActive use of the beach is allowed under applicable laws (e.g. walking included);\n\n\nAdditional restrictions on active beach use are followed\, e.g.\, open and closing times\n\n\nBeaches are not so crowded that active users can maintain a safe physical distance of 6 feet\n\nParticipation in a solo cleanup event is voluntary and solely at a participant’s own risk\, including risk associated with COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2). Individuals should only participate to the extent that they can comply with applicable federal\, state\, and local rules and restrictions\, and the below required practices including physical distancing. \nThe following rules must be followed to ensure individuals are equipped to make an educated\, safe and mindful decision to conduct a solo cleanup while following CDC public health guidance\, local beach access restrictions\, and EPA recommendations for properly discarding used PPE items. \nBe responsible! If you are feeling sick or generally unwell\, please stay indoors and heal. \n  \n \n  \nParticipate in a Raffle: Send us your photo or uploaded the picture to social media with #hokalichallenge and tag @hokali.co and participate for a FREE SURFING LESSON + HOKALI HAT. \nWhere to find US: Look for the HOKALI Flag at the beach. Our coach Paislee will be there waiting for you :). His contact information is: +8188237711 \nWhat to bring: mask/cloth face covering\, gloves\, 60% alcohol-based hand sanitizer\, grabbers (if you have them)\, 2 separate collection receptacles. \nCheck with your local authority on beach use and access restrictions. Select a location where you can maintain a minimum physical distance of 6 feet. Avoid crowded areas at crowded times. \nWear a mask or cloth face covering when in public per CDC recommendations. \nWear gloves. We cannot stress this safety precaution enough. Viruses can live on hard surfaces\, and individuals should exercise extreme caution when collecting litter. Wearing gloves discourages you from touching your face or face covering. If using reusable gloves\, be sure to properly sanitize between uses. Effective sanitization of a reusable glove depends on the material. Individuals should comply with CDC and EPA guidance on how to effectively sanitize reusable items against COVID-19. \nGrabbers are a good way to minimize contact between your gloves and trash items. Sanitize these after use and before transport or storage. \nRefrain from touching your face or public surfaces during the cleanup. \nRemember to use hand sanitizer after the cleanup is over\, then wash your hands with soap and hot water for 20 seconds as soon as you’re able to do so. \nRemember to properly disinfect all reusable equipment before and after the cleanup using an EPA-approved product for use against SARS-CoV-2\, the virus that causes COVID-19. \nFor more information check out Surf Lessons website: www.hokali.co \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nHours\nEvery 2nd of the Month: 12:00pm – 1:30pm \n\n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \neventbrite.com/e/hokali-beach-cleanup-day-venice\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

It contains a spectacular array of beaded objects\, including a majestic throne\, elaborate chiefly gowns\, and sophisticated divination regalia. \nA collection of post-apartheid election materials and contemporary South African art is being developed\, as are a number of collections of popular urban arts from countries including Tanzania and Muslim Senegal. Recently\, more than 400 textiles made by the Kuba peoples of the Democratic Republic of the Congo were gifted by the Christensen Foundation. \nThe collection represents some of the finest examples of men’s embroidered raffia pile cloths and women’s appliqué cloths. This collection complements already significant holdings of West African textiles from countries such as Mali and Ghana\, including kente and adinkra cloth and Asafo flags. The museum also has significant holdings of arts from the African Americas\, notably arts of Haitian Vodou\, Brazil and Suriname. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nARTS OF THE AMERICAS\n \nThese holdings include a comprehensive collection of pre-Columbian ceramics with the best representations from West Mexico\, the Valley of Mexico\, and pre-Columbian Peru (with special strengths in the art of the Moche). The Fowler also possesses a cohesive collection of Guatemalan costumes; an extensive collection of Mexican clothing; textiles of Peru; and a comprehensive representation of field-collected market materials from Michoacan\, Mexico. Complementing the pre-Columbian collections are field collections of the Warao and Yecuana Indians of the Orinoco Delta of Venezuela and contemporary Latin American popular arts including Mexican trees of life\, Day of the Dead figures\, and masks from Metepec\, Oaxaca\, Michoacan\, Jalisco\, Peubla\, and Guanajuato. \nNative American materials from the U.S. and Canada are a small but significant part of the collection. Materials from the United States and Canada include well-known Northwest Coast material\, as well as a notable cross section of late nineteenth-century Inuit art and material culture. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nARTS OF ASIA AND THE PACIFIC \n \n  \nThe Fowler Museum at UCLA collections from Insular Southeast Asia\, including Indonesia\, the Philippines\, Malaysia\, and aboriginal Taiwan\, are among the strongest in the United States. The Indonesian and Philippine textiles reinforce the Fowler Museum’s standing as a major repository for the textile arts. Also included are significant collections of sculptural material from Sumatra\, Borneo\, Sulawesi\, and Luzon\, puppetry from Java and Bali\, basketry from Indonesia and Philippines\, and metalwork from the Philippines. The primary strength of the Pacific collections lies in materials from Papua New Guinea\, especially the Papuan Gulf\, Trobriand Islands\, Sepik River\, and Maprik region. Australia and Polynesia are also represented by sizeable collections\, including 45 rare Maori cloaks. \nThe collections from mainland Asia are smaller but growing rapidly\, due to current collecting priorities. A collection of betel-chewing paraphernalia\, representing several countries in South and Southeast Asia\, is considered one of the finest in the world. Other holdings include textiles from Bhutan\, Pakistan\, India and Japan\, baskets and decorative arts from Japan\, puppetry from China\, Thailand\, India\, and Turkey\, and art and artifacts from Nepal. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nARCHAEOLOGICAL COLLECTIONS\n \nThe Fowler Museum at UCLA also serves as a repository for archaeological collections acquired during research conducted by UCLA faculty\, staff\, students\, and other professional archaeologists. Documentation of the collections includes artifact catalogs\, excavation notes\, maps\, and photographs. These collections serve primarily as an archive for teaching and research. The Museum is compliant with guidelines mandates by the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) and has been signaled out by the State of California for its exemplary efforts. \nArchaeological collection areas include: \nCalifornia \nCollections from approximately 1100 sites\, mostly in Southern California. \nSouthwest \nSignificant collections from the Rainbow Bridge-Monument Valley Expedition of 1933-1938 and several Parowan Fremont sites in Utah excavated in the 1950’s\, and other Anasazi and Hohokam sites. \nMexico \nIncludes objects from 218 sites\, mostly in western and central Mexico. \nSudan \nThe Nubian/Egyptian fortress site at Askut is the source of approximately 60\,000 artifacts excavated by UCLA archaeologist Alexander Badawy in conjunction with the Aswan High Dam Salvage Campaign\, 1962-1964. \nOld World stone tool collection \nIncludes tools from Europe and the Middle East. \n\n\nMUSEUM HOURS\n\n\n\n\nAdmission is FREE \nMonday: closed\nTuesday: closed\nWednesday: 12 – 8pm\nThursday: 12 – 5pm\nFriday: 12 – 5pm\nSaturday: 12 – 5pm\nSunday: 12 – 5pm \n\n\n\n\n\nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nfowler.ucla.edu\n \n\n  \nFind more

SUMMARY:COME LIGHT UP THE NIGHT
DESCRIPTION:EVERY WEDNESDAY NIGHT @ South Beach Park in Santa Monica.\nGlow Flow at Santa Monica’s South Beach\, is a night time event\, that turns the beach into a playground of light.  Local artists spin various lighted objects to create one of a kind moments of kinetic art. A fantastic group of artists & dancers who work with LED Hula Hoops and other LED apparatus they can spin\, toss\, throw in the air\, etc. \n\n Very friendly and talented peeps.  \n \nCelebrating our love of  the FLOW at Glow Flow Santa Monica!\n\n\n\n\nHow to Capture the Glow Flow Moment\nIf spin isn’t your thing\, how about photography. Here are different ways to shoot Glow Flow Santa Monica. \nGOLDEN HOUR / BLUE HOUR\nYou can shoot available light for images of the artists. \nSLOW SHUTTER SPEED\nAs Glow Flow gets dark\, you can use a slow shutter speed to let the moving LED devices draw amazing “spirograph” shapes with light against the night sky. \nSLOW SYNC\nYou can combine both elements with slow sync or rear sync. A long shutter speed captures traces from LED Hula Hoops and then your on-or-off-camera flash lights the artist. \nTHE BEST FLASH?\nI haven’t had the best results with built-in pop-up flash. I like using an external flash in the hot-shoe. At Glow Flow\, We often say that having flash off the hot-shoe produces better lighting. For me\, in this case\, I think there’s so much going on\, that hot-shoe mounted flash works well. You could bring a light stand and battery powered strobe which might look great but seems like a lot of gear. \nTRIPOD?\nIf you use flash\, it will freeze the artist\, and the point-light-sources of the LEDs effectively freeze themselves\, so you can shoot this handheld. However\, you will get crisper images if you use a tripod. \nBRACKET\, BRACKET\, BRACKET!\nAs you can imagine\, dialing in your exposure can be a bit complicated! Plan to try a variety of different shutter speeds to see what works with the LEDs. And different flash intensities to balance the illumination on the artist with the LED traces. \n\nSouth Beach Park\nis located at 110 Pier Ave\, on the border between Venice Beach and Santa Monica.  \n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nfacebook.com/veniceglowflow\n \n\n\n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:Odd Squad Coffee Cruise
DESCRIPTION:EVERY WEDNESDAY at Coffee Bean Culver City\nThe Odd Squad Coffee Cruise meets every Wednesday at the Coffee Bean in Culver City and EVERYONE IS WELCOME !\nStarted in 2012 by Blake Weddington\, The Odd Squad Car Club has always been more about the people and less about the cars.  The club has no dues\, no required attendance and no car criteria other than pre-smog American cars (preferably not muscle cars).  The cars in the club range from fresh paint jobs to rusty rat rods and most are used as daily drivers. \n\nThe Odd Squad Coffee Cruise happens every Wednesday\nand then cruises to a local food spot!  If you are interested in joining the club\, we ask that you come by on Wednesdays and get to know the guys.  Our club has no attitude\, no egos and everyone is treated with respect\, so the worst that will happen is you leave with some new friends. \n\n\n\nLos Angeles is famous worldwide\, for its long love affair with the automobile. Car culture has been part of the city’s DNA for generations. From classics to custom builds and hot rods\, the automobile has always been a Southern Californian symbol of unfettered freedom. Here\, the automobile was embraced by Angelenos young and old\, rich and poor\, honest and not quite so. From the beginning\, when LA’s Sepulveda\, Sunset\, and Olympic Boulevards were the primary arteries linking beaches\, the Valley\, and downtown\, the automobile was our way to stay connected. It was never merely a matter of arriving at Point B from Point A—one had to get there in style\, whether cruising the boulevard or driving a getaway car.\n\nKeep up to date with all things Odd Squad by following them on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/oddsquadcarclub/\n\n\nOdd Squad Coffee Cruise Meets at The Coffee Bean\nBorn and brewed in Southern California since 1963\, The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf® has always been passionate about connecting loyal customers with carefully handcrafted products.\n\n\n\n\nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \ninstagram.com/oddsquadcarclub\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:LACMA Black American Portraits
DESCRIPTION:FREE EVERYDAY AFTER 3PM- Mid Wilshire District\n\n\n\nLACMA presents Black American Portraits. Remembering Two Centuries of Black American Art\, guest curated by David Driskell at LACMA 45 years ago\, this exhibition reframes portraiture to center Black American subjects\, sitters\, and spaces. \n \nSpanning over two centuries from c. 1800 to the present day\, this selection of approximately 140 works draws primarily from LACMA’s permanent collection and highlights emancipation and early studio photography\, scenes from the Harlem Renaissance\, portraits from the Civil Rights and Black Power eras\, and multiculturalism of the 1990s. \n \nBlack American Portraits chronicles the ways in which Black Americans have used portraiture to envision themselves in their own eyes. Countering a visual culture that often demonizes Blackness and fetishizes the spectacle of Black pain\, these images center love\, abundance\, family\, community\, and exuberance. \n \n\nExhibition Soundtrack Available\nThe Black American Portraits exhibition soundtrack celebrates the radiance of Black musical culture in its most joyful forms\, featuring song selections from several of the artists represented in the show: Karon Davis\, Reggie Burrows Hodges\, Shinique Smith\, and Umar Rashid alongside additional song curation by dublab’s Mark “Frosty” McNeill. \nListen Now\n\n\n\n\n  \nThe Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) is an art museum located on Wilshire Boulevard in the Miracle Mile vicinity of Los Angeles; admission is FREE after 3pm on Tuesdays. SUMMARY:LONG BEACH MUSEUM OF ART
DESCRIPTION:KIDS UNDER 12 FREE- Long Beach\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJawlensky and Kandinsky: The Milton Wichner Collection\nThrough October 2\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe most significant gift in the Museum’s history was a generous bequest of collector Milton Wichner in 1979. Wichner’s gift of 61 works by European Modernists changed the course of the Museum’s future\, expanding the collection from one of regional-focus\, to one enhanced by international perspectives. Wichner moved to Los Angeles from the East coast upon completing his law degree from Harvard University in 1936. Between the film industry\, the oil boom \,and an influx of Europeans fleeing Nazi Germany\, Los Angeles saw a period of tremendous growth\, accompanied by the convergence of different cultures and aesthetics. During this time\, Wichner met Galka Scheyer who represented a group of contemporary artists\, she named Blaue Vier (Blue Four): Alexej Jawlensky\, Vasily Kandinsky\, Lyonel Feininger\, and Paul Klee. This exhibition showcases the works of two of the Blue Four artists\, Alexej Jawlensky and Vasily Kandinsky\, curated from the Wichner Collection. The Milton Wichner Collection entrusted to the Museum\, lives on to perpetuate the memory of this benefactor\, and serve as a reflection of his passion and esteem for European abstraction. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGenie Shenk: Ring\nOngoing\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nConstructed of folded building paper with internal armature\, Ring began as a study of spiral motion between concentric circles in 1989. Genie Shenk became interested in the spiral as a means of increment from one circle to another and found this relationship could be defined three-dimensionally with the intersection of two isometric circular forms. As the inner circle diminishes\, the outer increases\, until a point of equilibrium is reached. \nGenie Shenk\, Ring\, 1990-1999\, Tar paper\, Gift of the artist  2009.13.a-et \n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n  \n\n\n2300 East Ocean Boulevard\, Long Beach\, CA 90803\n\n\n\nThe Long Beach Museum of Art (LBMA) was founded in 1950 as a municipal art center for the city of Long Beach. Since its inception\, the Museum has been housed in the historic 1911 Elizabeth Milbank Anderson House. In 1957\, the Anderson House was designated as the Long Beach Museum of Art\, at which time the Museum began acquiring a permanent collection.\nIn 1977\, the Museum was honored with accreditation by the American Association of Museums\, which it has since maintained. Since 1986\, the Long Beach Museum of Art Foundation has managed the Museum\, governed by a Board of Trustees. In 2000\, the Museum completed a restoration of the historic residence and constructed a new two-story exhibition pavilion (in 2015 the pavilion was renamed the Hartman Pavilion). Since then\, the Museum has offered diverse and compelling exhibitions\, which has resulted in increased visitors and program attendance. \n  \n \nThe Museum’s permanent collection is diverse with more than 3\,200 works encompassing 300 years of American and European art in all media. Highlights from the collection include furniture by Charles and Ray Eames\, ceramics by Beatrice Wood\, and sculptures by Claire Falkenstein\, George Rickney and Peter Voulokos; Early 20th Century European Modernist paintings by Vasily Kandinsky\, Alexej Jawlensky and others from the Milton Wichner Collection; and contemporary artists such as James Jean\, Sherrie Wolf\, and Sandow Birk whose paintings have recently been added to the collection. \nSince 1951\, exhibitions presented by the Museum have been varied with shows ranging from individual artists to specific types of art. Some of the notable highlights include: The Artful Teapot: 20th Century Expressions from the Kamm Collection; Architecture for Dogs; Frank E. Cummings III: Jeweled Harmony in Wood; Masterworks: Defining a New Narrative; and Vitality And Verve: Transforming The Urban Landscape. \n  \n \nThe Museum also offers a myriad of nearly free educational programs for both children and adults including KidsVisions\, a visual arts curriculum\, which serves all 5th grades students from the Long Beach Unified School District. \nThe Long Beach Museum of Art and the KidsVisions Arts Education Program is supported\, in part\, by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors through the Los Angeles County Arts Commission. \n \n\n  \n\nClaire’s Restaurant\nClaire’s is located on the beautifully landscaped campus of the Long Beach Museum of Art and offers oceanfront dining\, seasonal libations & more! \nFor reservations call 562-439-2119 Hours Thur 11am-8pm\, Fri 11am-3pm\, Sat & Sun 11am-3pm\, Happy hour Thur 3pm-8pm. Content and Interface work together to give the user an experience tailored to their needs. You want to filter\, tag favorites\, adjust reading levels\, share content\, and serendipitously discover new and related ideas. \nWith Britannica School\, educators can map text and multimedia to classroom activities on the fly and even toggle within an article to see the State and Common Core standards associated with it. SUMMARY:Dockweiler Beach Fire Pits
DESCRIPTION:EVERY DAY ’til MIDNIGHT- Dockweiler State Beach\nThe Dockweiler Beach Fire Pits are located about 3 miles south of Playa del Rey\, this inviting beach features 3 miles of shoreline\, an RV park\, and over 2\,000 regular vehicle parking spaces. The wide sandy beach lies beneath the departures flight path of LAX\, offering fantastic belly views of airlines headed out over the Pacific. The lot entrance is at Vista del Mar and Imperial Highway. \n\n\nFIRE PITS RULES\n\n\n\n\n\nAny grills or BBQs must fit inside the fire pit\, which is 2′ wide. No grills\, grilling\, or flames or fires on the sand.\nTo use the fire pits\, you bring your own charcoal or wood and a way to light them.\nPlease do not use sand to put out the fire.\nHelp keep our beaches clean by preventing ashes or debris from falling into the sand.\n\n  \n\n\n\nThere’s no better way to end a fun day at the beach than to circle up around a cozy bonfire. Not all California beaches allow bonfires\, but here in the Marina del Rey area\, we’re lucky that Dockweiler State Beach does permit regulated burns in provided fire rings. Follow these tips to ensure your group has an enjoyable time. \n\nIf you want a pit\, arrive early. From May through September\, the pits are in high demand\, especially on the weekends\, and there are some diehards who arrive at dawn to claim their spots for the entire day. You cannot reserve fire pits as you would a campsite. Do not leave your pit unattended\, even for a quick dip in the ocean – if you do\, don’t be surprised to find another group has taken over the site. There are between 60 – 80 fire pits located just north and south of where Vista del Mar intersects with Imperial Highway. That sounds like a lot\, but consider that Dockweiler is also home to an RV park\, and you’re all competing for space.\nBring everything you need – wood\, s’mores\, snacks\, et cetera (see “Your Packing List” below).\nThe beach and all amenities close at midnight.\nBefore you leave\, snuff out the flame with water. Stir the embers after they are covered with water and make sure that everything is saturated. Do not use sand to distinguish the fire\, as it creates a mess for the next guest.\n\n \nYOUR PACKING LIST\n\nWood and charcoal (wood for that nice bonfire and charcoal for cooking – see below about barbecue rules). Both can be purchased at Ralph’s grocery stores: 4700 Admiralty Way\, Marina del Rey; 8701 Lincoln Boulevard\, Playa del Rey. Only burn clean wood (nothing treated with paint\, chemicals\, etc.) in the pits.\nFire starter and a lighter. You can purchase kindling from most any grocery\, home supply\, or sporting-goods store. Or\, prepare your own starter with this old-school camping craft: Fill a cardboard egg carton with dryer lint\, wood shavings\, paper shreds\, or other ignitable materials. Pour a small amount of melted candle wax into each cup to make things stay put. Break off cups individually and place into your wood stack. Light the cardboard cups and watch how easy your fire takes off – even in the wind.\nIf barbecuing\, note that large stand-up barbeques are NOT allowed on the sand or in the parking lots. However\, you can bring a low-profile version and place it inside the fire ring.\nLong-handle grilling sticks. These are great for cooking hot dogs and kabobs and roasting marshmallows.\nHot glove or mitt. Don’t ruin your night with a burn from handling hot wood\, pots\, or grills. Items like the Ove Glove offer protection while still allowing dexterity.\nFood! Doubt you’ll forget this\, but you may want a separate checklist so that you remember all the elements for your meal. It’s easy to overlook things like serving spoons\, plastic utensils\, salt and pepper\, napkins or wet wipes\, and containers for leftovers. Paper plates are great for cookouts since they’re ok to burn in the fire afterward.\nCamp/beach table. Depending on the size of your group\, you may prefer to set up your dinner fixings buffet style on a simple folding table. Whatever you bring\, remember that you’ll need to carry it across the sand to the pit and back to the parking lot at the end of your evening. So only take what you really need.\nYou’ll want a beverage cooler with ice\, especially if you heed our warning and arrive early in the day to claim your spot. A bag to hold discarded recyclables is a good idea\, too.\nComfort items. Ask each person in your group to bring his or her own beach chair or picnic blanket. Remind them that despite warm daytime temps\, the beach cools down a lot at night; having extra blankets and jackets is a smart move.\n\n  \n  \n  \nClick here to read beach rules and regulations at LA County Beaches including Dockweiler State Beach. \n  \nDOCKWEILER STATE BEACH PARKING INFORMATION\nParking at Dockweiler State Beach costs between $6 (weekday\, low season) and $13 (weekend\, high season) and there are no in/outs. If you leave the lot\, you must pay again to enter. The first 300 cars to arrive during weekdays pay a reduced rate of $3; during weekends and L.A. County holidays\, the reduced rate for the first 300 cars is $5. There is limited street parking on Vista del Mar\, but take note of the parking signage.
