DESCRIPTION:OPEN DAILY- Manhattan Beach Pier\nThe Roundhouse Aquarium is located at the end of the Manhattan Beach Pier. The Roundhouse has undergone a recent revitalization through a $4 million capital project spearheaded by the Harrison Greenberg Foundation. The new Roundhouse Aquarium educates and inspires more than 300\,000 visitors every year. It is managed and operated by the nonprofit oceanic and environmental organization Oceanographic Teaching Stations\, Inc. (OTS)\, whose mission is to connect and engage visitors and students to the oceans through hands-on interactive experiences with marine life and habitats of southern California\, and to inspire them to become good stewards of our environment. \nOTS’ programs at the Roundhouse Aquarium promote the study of the oceans\, tidelands and beaches of Southern California through a wide slate of science-based and standards-aligned education programs with its immersive and engaging exhibits of a diverse array of marine life.  More than 100 marine animals from Southern California’s waters live at the aquarium\, many are native to its local waters in the Santa Monica Bay. Notable wildlife include moon jellies\, sharks\, octopus\, sheepshead\, moray eels\, lobsters\, and more – as well as a touch tank with sea stars\, sea cucumbers\, sea urchins and sea snails. The aquarium prides itself on being family oriented. It’s a great place for kids to take their parents! \n\n\n\n\n\nCome SEA our Marine Exhibits\nGet to know the habitats within Southern California by visiting our diverse marine exhibits. These exhibits are showcased within 4 Aquarium Galleries. \n\n\nMarine Habitat Gallery\n\nRocky Reef Tank \nThe Rocky Reef shows us what reefs in the cold California waters look like. They are similar to coral reefs but are made up of rocks instead of corals. They are just as important of a habitat as coral reefs and often serve as a nursery for many types of juvenile fish. \nKelp Forest Tank \nThe Kelp Forest tank represents a distinct southern California marine habitat. This tank shows us what it looks like to swim at the edge of the kelp forest\, where rocks become scarcer and sand more plentiful. Many of the animals in the tank can live their life deep within the kelp forest or at the very edge. Those animals at the edges can even camouflage in the sand. \n\n\n\n\nEducation Gallery\n\nDeep Kelp Forest Tank\nThese tanks represent a very diverse and abundant habitat\, the kelp forest! The giant kelp that grows 2 feet a day\, provides food and shelter for many different animals. Not only is this habitat important for animals\, but it is also important to humans as well! Seaweeds\, like kelp\, produce about 70% of our oxygen through photosynthesis. So\, take a deep breath and thank kelp! \nTide Pool Tank\nAll the animals that you can find in our touch tank live in a habitat called a tide pool. When the tide is low and the water has receded\, pools of water are left in between rocks which form the tide pools. In Southern California\, we have 2 high tides and 2 low tides every day\, which means the animals’ habitat is always changing. They must have special adaptations that allow them to live in such a dynamic habitat. \nPier Piling Tank\nHave you ever wondered what is under the pier? This tank will give you a good idea! Pier pilings\, while man made\, do create a habitat for lots of animals ranging from mussels\, to crabs\, to fish and rays. The fish can either hide amongst the mussels or lay on the sand under the pier among the rays. \n\n\n\n \n\n\nMarine Science Gallery\n\nJewel Tank\nSee our animals in the spotlight with cool adaptive traits like our spotted rose anemone that has biofluorescence and our baby swell shark eggs that can camouflage as seaweed. The baby swell sharks are really cute when they hatch out too! \nPipefish Tank\nThe Pipefish tank is an example of a mudflat with eelgrass beds that act as a nursery for young fish and young sting rays. See if you can spot a pipefish in the eelgrass. \nArtificial Reef Tank\nThe Artificial Reef tank is an examples of man-made structures left behind that now act as reefs teaming with life from sea anemones on rock scallops to sea stars to juvenile rockfish. Can you see the bright orange Garibaldi with blue spots? \nOctopus Tank\nThe octopus tank is an example of a deep water habitat brought to life for our guests to see. It features anemones and rock scallops on the reef which also add structure and microhabitats to the reef. The decorator crab uses the colonial strawberry anemones to help decorate its body to camouflage with the reef. There are small but colorful rockfish like the half-banded rockfish that stay close to the rocks and use them as shelter. \nKid’s Kelp Corner\nHave you ever wondered oh why\, oh why did my goldfish die? Come find the answer in the Kid’s Kelp Corner. You can also relax and read the many ocean related books in our library while watching our inquisitive freshwater fish. \nDiscovery Center\nCome check out what it means to be a scientist! Observe plankton\, learn about the food chain\, and discover some of the aquarium’s smallest residents. \nSeahorse Tank\nSeahorses are some of the most fragile sea creatures in the ocean\, and they can camouflage to look like seaweed\, eelgrass\, or even sea fans. They use their tails to hold onto eelgrass and stay upright\, but they won’t swim except in short bursts. DESCRIPTION:OPEN TUESDAY – SATURDAY -North Hollywood\nThe ILIAD BOOKSHOP is one of LA’s most popular book stores. Come on in and browse – we have cats (sorry\, but all dogs other than service dogs must be carried while in the store)\, couches\, music\, water\, and 150\,000 books. We take cash\, check\, Visa\, MasterCard\, Discover. American Express\, Apple Pay\, debit cards\, and Paypal. We’ve been around for over 30 years\, we’ve been featured in numerous movies\, short films\, and television shows\, and we are happy to answer any questions you have on buying or selling books. \n \nSo\, first let’s get one thing straight: We’re not called “ILIAD BOOKSHOP” because we’re a Greek bookshop (the truth is our first location was next to Odyssey Video\, and hence a literary joke). And we’re also not a Russian bookshop\, contrary to a search result that keeps coming up on Google. \n \nOur brick-and-mortar store is located in North Hollywood\, California\, we’re one of the largest used bookstores in the Los Angeles area\, and we specialize in Literature and the Arts (but carry books on most subjects). \n  \n \nThe LA Weekly named us “Best Bookstore Escape” in their 2019 “Best of L.A.” issue\, “Best Used Graphic Novels” in 2015\, and “Best Bookstore\, Valley” in 2012; the L.A. HotList named us Best Bookstore 2018; the L.A. Times “Readers Choice 2011” named us as the favorite bookstore for the Valley/Ventura area; the April 2007 issue of Los Angeles Magazine listed us as one of the best used bookstores in L.A.; the L.A. Times did a feature article on us; we’ve been featured on Storage Wars; and we’ve been home to numerous movie and television shoots. We have over 150\,000 books in stock\, we offer as safe and healthy a shopping environment as possible\, a convenient location with free parking and a bike rack\, an experienced staff\, air conditioning\, and two very sociable cats. \n  \n \n\n\n\nApollo and Zeus\nare brothers who came to us in August 2014 when they were just eight weeks old. Apollo (the blonde one) loves to purr and climb ladders; Zeus (the gray tabby) may jump onto your shoulders unexpectedly. They are very active and playful in the mornings and evenings\, but in the afternoons you may find them asleep in their bed on the front counter. \nZeus and Apollo are featured on Chronicle Books’ list of bookstore cats! \n\n  \n \nHenrietta\nwas a little stray who started hanging around the bookstore’s parking lot in fall of 2011\, when she was just a few weeks old. She was very shy\, but eventually found her way into our back room and took up residence there. For months we thought she was a boy\, and we named her Henry\, after Henry Miller…so you can imagine our surprise when “Henry” went into heat! Unfortunately she never got used to anyone except employee Bob\, so in June 2013 she went to live with Bob at home\, where she now happily resides. \n\n\n\nZola (aka The One-Eyed Pirate Kitty) \ncame to us on May 6\, 2006\, after being rescued by our fabulous writer friend Christa Faust. Zola spent the first two years of her life in a wire-mesh hamster cage\, and received no veterinary care; untreated infections caused her to lose one eye and several teeth\, and left her with a scar on the remaining eye and a loss of muscle tone. Amazingly enough\, she not only survived\, but was affectionate and friendly. Unfortunately\, Zola passed away on March 26\, 2011\, due to complications from an uncommon disease called idiopathic chylothorax \n\n\n\n\n \nTorquemada (or just Torq\, for short) and his sister Helga\nwere born in a vacant lot in Hollywood shortly after the 1994 Northridge earthquake\, and adopted by Iliad employee Bob Johnson not long after. Since Bob lived within easy walking distance of Iliad’s back door\, Torq and Helga accompanied him and soon became the official bookstore cats from 1994 to 2006. Despite being brother and sister\, they were very different in both personality and appearance: Torq was short-haired\, quick\, and slightly bratty\, while Helga was long-haired\, moved v-e-r-y slowly\, and was easy-going in temperament. When we moved to our new location in 2006\, Torq and Helga decided they didn’t like the idea of commuting to work\, and they retired to live at home with Bob. Torq and Helga achieved some fame during their tenure as Iliad’s resident feline employees\, being featured in articles about the store and at Shopcat.com. Helga passed away in 2008\, Torq in 2013. \n\n  \n \nCharlie was a neighborhood stray who basically adopted the store\, and moved in during the early days (circa 1988). Charlie was an easygoing\, laid back guy who got along great with Jack the Dog (see below)\, and obviously just liked being around books. Nicknamed “the Silver Bullet” for his gleaming gray coat and occasional streaks around the store\, Charlie was also responsible for helping one human employee (Lisa) overcome her lifelong cat allergies. When Dan moved out of the store into his own house circa 1995\, Charlie went home with him\, and lived there until he died from old age in 2005. \n\n\n\n\n\n  \n \nBugs and Lamont \nwere two neighborhood strays who were adopted by Dan and his wife Gloria when they lived in part of the store. Lamont was a very handsome and noble Persian blue (or at least a Persian blue lookalike) who occasionally strode through the store imperiously; Bugs was skittish\, and we usually only glimpsed her outside. It’s the Second Day.  \nHOKALI is announcing guidelines for individuals to conduct solo beach clean ups as long as local governing bodies allow for public beach access. A solo cleanup is defined as an individual cleanup by one person or household unit\, not necessarily organized by the chapter\, but promoted as an activity for the public. \nThe following requirements are outlined to assist in evaluating your ability to conduct a solo beach cleanup. \n\nYour state and local governing agency allows access to the beach;\n\n\nActive use of the beach is allowed under applicable laws (e.g. walking included);\n\n\nAdditional restrictions on active beach use are followed\, e.g.\, open and closing times\n\n\nBeaches are not so crowded that active users can maintain a safe physical distance of 6 feet\n\nParticipation in a solo cleanup event is voluntary and solely at a participant’s own risk\, including risk associated with COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2). Here are different ways to shoot Glow Flow Santa Monica. \nGOLDEN HOUR / BLUE HOUR\nYou can shoot available light for images of the artists. \nSLOW SHUTTER SPEED\nAs Glow Flow gets dark\, you can use a slow shutter speed to let the moving LED devices draw amazing “spirograph” shapes with light against the night sky. \nSLOW SYNC\nYou can combine both elements with slow sync or rear sync. A long shutter speed captures traces from LED Hula Hoops and then your on-or-off-camera flash lights the artist. \nTHE BEST FLASH?\nI haven’t had the best results with built-in pop-up flash. I like using an external flash in the hot-shoe. At Glow Flow\, We often say that having flash off the hot-shoe produces better lighting. For me\, in this case\, I think there’s so much going on\, that hot-shoe mounted flash works well. You could bring a light stand and battery powered strobe which might look great but seems like a lot of gear. \nTRIPOD?\nIf you use flash\, it will freeze the artist\, and the point-light-sources of the LEDs effectively freeze themselves\, so you can shoot this handheld. However\, you will get crisper images if you use a tripod. \nBRACKET\, BRACKET\, BRACKET!\nAs you can imagine\, dialing in your exposure can be a bit complicated! Plan to try a variety of different shutter speeds to see what works with the LEDs. DESCRIPTION:EVERY THURSDAY 12:30–1:00PM- Online via ZOOM. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWould you like to learn how to meditate? Join the Hammer Museum each Thursday for Mindful Awareness Meditation Online. Mindfulness Meditation is the moment-by-moment process of actively and openly observing one’s physical\, mental\, and emotional experiences. Mindfulness has scientific support as a means to reduce stress\, improve attention\, boost the immune system\, reduce emotional reactivity\, and promote a general sense of health and well-being. These half hour weekly sessions are open to all who are interested in learning how to live more presently in life. No special clothing is required\, and participants are welcome to join for five minutes or enjoy the entire 30 minutes.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThese free weekly drop-in sessions usually take place in the Hammer’s Billy Wilder Theater but are now offered live online via Zoom. \nMindful Awareness Meditation is provided by UCLA & The Hammer Museum\n  \nff \n\nSessions are led by Diana Winston and other instructors from the UCLA Mindful Awareness Research Center. Remembering Two Centuries of Black American Art\, guest curated by David Driskell at LACMA 45 years ago\, this exhibition reframes portraiture to center Black American subjects\, sitters\, and spaces. \n \nSpanning over two centuries from c. 1800 to the present day\, this selection of approximately 140 works draws primarily from LACMA’s permanent collection and highlights emancipation and early studio photography\, scenes from the Harlem Renaissance\, portraits from the Civil Rights and Black Power eras\, and multiculturalism of the 1990s. \n \nBlack American Portraits chronicles the ways in which Black Americans have used portraiture to envision themselves in their own eyes. In 2000\, the Museum completed a restoration of the historic residence and constructed a new two-story exhibition pavilion (in 2015 the pavilion was renamed the Hartman Pavilion). DESCRIPTION:KIDS UNDER 12 FREE- Long Beach\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJawlensky and Kandinsky: The Milton Wichner Collection\nThrough October 2\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe most significant gift in the Museum’s history was a generous bequest of collector Milton Wichner in 1979. Wichner’s gift of 61 works by European Modernists changed the course of the Museum’s future\, expanding the collection from one of regional-focus\, to one enhanced by international perspectives. Wichner moved to Los Angeles from the East coast upon completing his law degree from Harvard University in 1936. Between the film industry\, the oil boom \,and an influx of Europeans fleeing Nazi Germany\, Los Angeles saw a period of tremendous growth\, accompanied by the convergence of different cultures and aesthetics. During this time\, Wichner met Galka Scheyer who represented a group of contemporary artists\, she named Blaue Vier (Blue Four): Alexej Jawlensky\, Vasily Kandinsky\, Lyonel Feininger\, and Paul Klee. This exhibition showcases the works of two of the Blue Four artists\, Alexej Jawlensky and Vasily Kandinsky\, curated from the Wichner Collection. The Milton Wichner Collection entrusted to the Museum\, lives on to perpetuate the memory of this benefactor\, and serve as a reflection of his passion and esteem for European abstraction. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGenie Shenk: Ring\nOngoing\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nConstructed of folded building paper with internal armature\, Ring began as a study of spiral motion between concentric circles in 1989. Genie Shenk became interested in the spiral as a means of increment from one circle to another and found this relationship could be defined three-dimensionally with the intersection of two isometric circular forms.
