SUMMARY:Hollywood Heritage Museum
DESCRIPTION:OPEN EVERY FRIDAY-SUNDAY- Hollywood\nThe Hollywood Heritage Museum\, is located in the Lasky-DeMille Barn\, which was built in 1901.  The story of the early Hollywood motion picture industry and the historic Hollywood community is told through archival photographs\, historic documents\, movie props and related memorabilia.  Visitors experience the actual structure where Cecil B. DeMille’s office exists\, furnished with selected personal DeMille belongings\, and where countless movies were filmed and studio staff worked and played. \nOn December 27\, 1956\, the Lasky-DeMille Barn was designated California State Historic Landmark No. 554\, recognizing the significant role the building played in the birth of the Hollywood motion picture industry.  Since 1985\, Hollywood Heritage\, Inc. has funded the preservation\, restoration and maintenance of the barn. It’s the oldest existing motion picture production building in Hollywood\, having been established as the Burns-Revier Studio in 1912\, and becoming the Jesse L. Lasky Feature Play Company in 1913.  The Lasky Company merged with Adolph Zuckor’s Famous Players in 1916\, becoming Famous Players-Lasky and merging with Paramount Distributing Company\, finally becoming Paramount Pictures Corporation. In 2014\, the Lasky-DeMille Barn was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. [See the Time Line on the Museum link for a more detailed history of the barn]. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nVISITING THE MUSEUM\nThe Hollywood Heritage Museum is open Friday\, Saturday and Sunday from noon until 4 pm. As we share our ample parking lot with the Hollywood Bowl\, the museum is occasionally closed when the Bowl has an event.  If you are traveling a long way to visit us\, it might be a good idea to phone first to make sure we are open: (323) 874-2276. \n\n\nPARKING\nParking is free. There is a large parking area on the east side of Highland Avenue\, in front of the museum.  There is no entrance facing Highland Avenue.  You have to go around the corner either on Milner Road or Odin Street and immediately turn into the lot.  If there are parking lot attendants at a barricade\, tell them that you are visiting the museum. \nPUBLIC TRANSPORTATION\nThe Metro subway station closest to the Museum is the Hollywood-Highland stop.  We are located approximately a half-mile north on Highland Avenue\, about a 12-minute walk. \nBECOME A DOCENT:\nHollywood Heritage is a volunteer driven organization. Our docents assist museum guests and help with our Barn programs\, as well as many other activities associated with historic preservation issues and the day-to-day activities that make our organization so vital.  If you are interested in becoming involved\, click here. \n  \n \nHOLLYWOOD HERITAGE ARCHIVE:\nHollywood Heritage maintains an archive of historic photographs\, documents\, and other material related to the film industry and the community.  Our archive also includes considerable holdings on Hollywood real estate history and buildings of architectural significance.  We continue to seek material related to our dual mission of industry and community history.  Questions regarding our archive and donations procedures should be directed to our Collections Manager\, Richard Adkins. \nDONATION OF PHYSICAL ITEMS:\nHollywood Heritage welcomes donations both monetary and physical objects.  Donated items fall into two categories. \nFor resale in the Museum Store:  The museum store contains new and used items.  The older items are all donated to Hollywood Heritage and include books on the motion picture industry and its participants\, and books on the Los Angeles area.  It also includes used DVDs\, VHS tapes and other electronic storage of motion pictures\, as well as related items. These types of donated items can be dropped off at the museum along with the donor’s name and address so that\, if desired\, donor recognition and/or a tax letter can be provided by the Collections Manager. \nFor Hollywood Heritage Archive:  These are items that Hollywood Heritage’s curator agrees are compatible with our collection.  An appointment may be set up with our Collections Manager.  Much of the collection has been donated by individuals and families with relatives who contributed to the film industry and the Hollywood community\, often with the goal of preserving their relatives’ participation in Hollywood. We are also interested in photographs or other documentation of any properties in Hollywood\, as we maintain an archive of each property by address.  For further information about donations you may contact our museum manager. \nHollywood Heritage\, Inc. is a 501(c) 3 California state non-profit corporation.  All donations are tax deductible to the full extent of the law.  We will be happy to provide a receipt for donations for tax purposes. \n\n  \n  \n \nAdmission:\nHollywood Heritage members:  Free! (Join at the door or online). \nAdults: $10 \nChildren under 12:  FREE! \nHours\nFriday – Sunday: 12:00pm – 4:00pm\n\nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nwww.hollywoodheritage.org\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

SUMMARY:Winter Snowland
DESCRIPTION:WINTER SNOWLAND- Burbank California\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWinter Snowland has been a tradition for 30+ years now for Burbank resident\, Keith LaPrath. Winter Snowland is the largest Christmas display in Burbank California. Winter Snowland has been a family tradition for 30+ years. \n\n \n\nKeith Explains\nIt takes a lot of work to plan out the locations where everything will be placed. I really have to plan the electrical wiring carefully because the Christmas display takes a lot of power. It uses about 70 amps. In fact\, I burned up the main breaker in 2001. As you can imagine\, the power used by this holiday display gives me a shock in January when the power bill arrives from the City of Burbank. Since 2006 we have been adding LED lights to the display to reduce energy. Over the last 13 years of adding LED lights we have dropped over 30 amps of power on the display. The power consumption of the display is now way down and the display has never been brighter! I am sure you can see it from space now! \n  \n \nThe kids enjoy watching all of the animation and looking at thousands of Christmas lights. The holiday display has won lots of awards over the years and has been featured behind the weather on the major TV networks. In 2001\, this holiday display was shown live on National TV (NBC Today Show – Weekend Edition) when I was interviewed by David Bloom live from New York Time Square. In 2000\, it was one of the major topics of discussion on CBS’s Early Show with Brian Gumble. It was also shown on TV from coast to coast both those years. The display has also been Featured on HGTV. We were 1 of the 8 homes across the country the show chose to be on there Christmas special that year. We were also featured in David Seidman’s new book in 2003 called Holiday Lights. It is available on Amazon to buy.  \n\n \n\nThe display was a solo project for a lot of years. I was really the only one in my family that was crazy enough to get into this. But as time went on and the display grew my mother and grandmother became more involved in the display. My grandmother took over the job and paints and maintains all of the people and characters in the display. She paints all of them from there faces to there clothes and anything else they need. She also created the 2 stuffed reindeer that are sitting on the bench drinking coffee. She hand made them from scratch. They are one of my favorite scenes in the display. My mom also paints and helps me with the big paint jobs that need to be done like the train\, houses\, church or Santa’s sleigh. She also is a big help when it comes time to put the display away. The display take about 3 to 4 weeks to assemble starting on November 1st. And it’s amazing that we can get the whole display taken down\, unassembled and put away in the attic and storage shed all in one day. This is to the help of my mom\, she really knows how to keep it organized and in order for the next year.  \n  \n \nThank you for stopping by my website and I hope you enjoy the pictures and the Youtube videos. If you live in the area or are visiting from out of town and it is December please come by and see the display in person. There is nothing better then seeing it live with the music and all the animation going. It is on nightly in December from 6pm to 9pm daily unless rain is in the forecast for that evening then it will be off.  On the weekends the forecast calls for Snow! \nMerry Christmas from our family to yours \n\nKeith LaPrain \nHours\nNightly: 6:00pm – 10:00pm \n\n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nhttp://www.wintersnowland.com/\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n  \n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:The Santa Monica Steps
DESCRIPTION:OPEN AGAIN 24/7- Santa Monica\nThe Santa Monica Stairs are actually two different stairways\, both of which descend from Santa Monica’s Adelaide Drive to Entrada Drive (Santa Monica Canyon). \n \nThe mis-named “7th Street stairway” has its upper end across from 526 Adelaide Drive\, and leads down to Entrada Drive\, across the street from Amalfi Drive. It consists of 152 wooden steps and 18 concrete steps in a straight path\, about 5.5 feet wide\, separated by three horizontal landings. Altogether the 170 steps produce an overall vertical change of about 110 feet. \n \n\n \nThe “4th-street stairway” begins at the intersection of 4th Street and Adelaide\, leading down to Ocean Avenue Extension. It consists solely of concrete flights interconnected by right- and left-hand turns. There are 189 steps producing an overall vertical change of about 115 feet. \n  \n \nOn the Pacific Palisades side of Santa Monica Canyon is the so-called “secret Mesa stairway”\, which is much less used although it has more steps than either of the above. The base is on Mesa Road\, next to 404 Mesa and about a 10-minute walk from West Channel Road. 201 concrete steps rise about 100 feet to the intersection of Upper Mesa Road and Amalfi Drive. There is no railing except for the topmost 18 steps\, so descending requires caution. (The stairs are sometimes incorrectly called the “La Mesa stairs”–La Mesa Drive is elsewhere in Santa Monica\, and there is a La Mesa Stairway in the city of La Mesa in San Diego County.) \nSeveral other lengthy staircases nearby descend from Palisades Park bluffs to overpasses crossing Pacific Coast Highway to the beach: \n  \n\nThe northernmost crossing near Montana Avenue has 172 steps with a vertical change from Palisades Park to the pedestrian path on the beach of about 110 feet.Separate ramps\, one from the vicinity of Idaho Ave and the other from the top of the California Incline\, converge and share the same bridge crossing to the beach\, with a vertical change of 105 feet from Idaho\, 100 from California. The California route is bicycle-friendly with no steps at all\, while the Idaho route has one circular stairway of 41 steps between long sections of ramp.\nOne near Arizona Avenue has 115 steps with about 65 feet of vertical change\, with the longer inland section made of attractive brick.\nOne near Broadway has 83 steps with a vertical change of about 50 feet.\n\nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nhttps://www.facebook.com/santamonicastairs/\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

The band was formed in 1981 in Los Angeles by vocalist/guitarist James Hetfield and drummer Lars Ulrich\, and has been based in San Francisco for most of its career. The band’s fast tempos\, instrumentals and aggressive musicianship made them one of the founding “big four” bands of thrash metal\, alongside Megadeth\, Anthrax and Slayer. Metallica’s current lineup comprises founding members and primary songwriters Hetfield and Ulrich\, longtime lead guitarist Kirk Hammett and bassist Robert Trujillo. Guitarist Dave Mustaine (who went on to form Megadeth after being fired from the band) and bassists Ron McGovney\, Cliff Burton (who died in a bus accident in Sweden in 1986) and Jason Newsted are former members of the band. \n  \n \nMetallica earned a growing fan base in the underground music community and won critical acclaim with its first five albums. SUMMARY:Pluto TV
DESCRIPTION:IT’S FREE TV! App or Online\nWhat is Pluto TV? Well let’s see. We could pen a historical essay about our 2013 origins. \n \nWe could toss around numbers like 100s of channels\, 200+ content partners\, and 26+ million viewers. We could even drone on about our huge library of on-demand content which spans across all genres of movies\, news\, TV shows\, sports\, documentaries\, and blah blah blahhh… \nBut why complicate things when Pluto TV is\, at its core\, really simple? \nAll you really need to know is… it’s free of passwords\, it’s free of payments\, and it’s free of all those Friday night spats about what to watch. \nPluto TV is a free live-stream television and on-demand video service from ViacomCBS. \n  \n\n\n\nSo just lean back. Drop in and enjoy the show. It’s free.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat will I Find on Pluto TV?\n\n\nLIVE TV\n\n\n\n\nBlockbuster Movies\n \nComedy\n \nCult Classics\n \n\nKids & Family Friendly Programing \n\n\nSports\n \nNews\n\n\nLatino\n \n\n\nWatch on your \nSmart TV\, Streaming Devices\, Mobile App\, Desktop App or Watch On The Web\n\n\n \n\nOwned by ViacomCBS\, Pluto TV is a live-TV streaming service\, not entirely unlike Sling TV and such competitors as DirecTV Now\, Hulu+ Live TV\, or other similar services. But unlike those services which offer streaming access to channels you’d find on cable TV\, Pluto TV offers free content mainly curated from what’s already available online. Pluto TV launched in 2014 and picked up steam fairly quickly making it the largest free TV streaming service in the U.S. \nYou’re not going to find standard TV channels\, though some are represented via their web counterparts\, especially news outlets. Those include familiar names like Bloomberg\, Cheddar\, CNBC\, MSNBC\, CBSN\, and many others. As of April 2019\, it also includes CNN\, though not the full\, live CNN you get on cable. Instead\, the CNN channel features a curated playlist of short-form digital content from CNN’s anchors and reporters. Featured clips are oriented toward lifestyle and culture\, climate change\, the environment\, and original CNN investigations and interviews. A similar channel for NBC called NBC News Now arrived in February 2020. Other recent additions to Pluto include CMT\, Kevin Hart’s Laugh out Loud\, and Red Bull TV\, plus a handful of new themed channels in Celebrity\, Reality\, and Lives\, the perfect cocktail for pop culture and reality TV enthusiasts. \nSports coverage is less conventional — you’re not going to find the likes of ESPN here. Instead\, you’ll find choices like Fight\, World Poker Tour\, Impact Wrestling\, a dedicated Sports News network\, Glory Kickboxing\, and the Big Sky Network. DAZN recently signed a deal to provide an original weekly series on Pluto TV\, and there’s potential for that partnership to expand down the line. Pluto has recently added an official PGA Tour channel with 24/7 coverage of one of golf’s biggest tournaments. \nIn the Entertainment section\, there are reruns of reality and documentary shows alongside episodes of Dennis the Menace\, Thunderbirds\, and other older TV shows. Among those various channels\, you’ll also find Wipeout\, a network that only shows reruns of the popular game show and various iterations from different countries\, as well as Nosey\, which shows reruns of The Jerry Springer Show and The Maury Show\, among others. Meanwhile\, the Curiosity section features Science TV\, Docu TV\, Xive TV\, and even a NASA live stream. New additions include Pluto TV Sitcoms\, offering a selection of older comedies like 3rd Rock from the Sun and The Lucy Show\, and a Spanish-language channel called Pluto TV Cine. \n  \n\nFor additional information\, visit the Pluto TV website @ \npluto.tv\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:Roundhouse Aquarium
DESCRIPTION:OPEN DAILY- Manhattan Beach Pier\nThe Roundhouse Aquarium is located at the end of the Manhattan Beach Pier. The Roundhouse has undergone a recent revitalization through a $4 million capital project spearheaded by the Harrison Greenberg Foundation. The new Roundhouse Aquarium educates and inspires more than 300\,000 visitors every year. It is managed and operated by the nonprofit oceanic and environmental organization Oceanographic Teaching Stations\, Inc. (OTS)\, whose mission is to connect and engage visitors and students to the oceans through hands-on interactive experiences with marine life and habitats of southern California\, and to inspire them to become good stewards of our environment. \nOTS’ programs at the Roundhouse Aquarium promote the study of the oceans\, tidelands and beaches of Southern California through a wide slate of science-based and standards-aligned education programs with its immersive and engaging exhibits of a diverse array of marine life.  More than 100 marine animals from Southern California’s waters live at the aquarium\, many are native to its local waters in the Santa Monica Bay. Notable wildlife include moon jellies\, sharks\, octopus\, sheepshead\, moray eels\, lobsters\, and more – as well as a touch tank with sea stars\, sea cucumbers\, sea urchins and sea snails. The aquarium prides itself on being family oriented. It’s a great place for kids to take their parents! \n\n\n\n\n\nCome SEA our Marine Exhibits\nGet to know the habitats within Southern California by visiting our diverse marine exhibits. These exhibits are showcased within 4 Aquarium Galleries. \n\n\nMarine Habitat Gallery\n\nRocky Reef Tank \nThe Rocky Reef shows us what reefs in the cold California waters look like. They are similar to coral reefs but are made up of rocks instead of corals. They are just as important of a habitat as coral reefs and often serve as a nursery for many types of juvenile fish. \nKelp Forest Tank \nThe Kelp Forest tank represents a distinct southern California marine habitat. This tank shows us what it looks like to swim at the edge of the kelp forest\, where rocks become scarcer and sand more plentiful. Many of the animals in the tank can live their life deep within the kelp forest or at the very edge. Those animals at the edges can even camouflage in the sand. \n\n\n\n\nEducation Gallery\n\nDeep Kelp Forest Tank\nThese tanks represent a very diverse and abundant habitat\, the kelp forest! The giant kelp that grows 2 feet a day\, provides food and shelter for many different animals. Not only is this habitat important for animals\, but it is also important to humans as well! Seaweeds\, like kelp\, produce about 70% of our oxygen through photosynthesis. So\, take a deep breath and thank kelp! \nTide Pool Tank\nAll the animals that you can find in our touch tank live in a habitat called a tide pool. When the tide is low and the water has receded\, pools of water are left in between rocks which form the tide pools. In Southern California\, we have 2 high tides and 2 low tides every day\, which means the animals’ habitat is always changing. They must have special adaptations that allow them to live in such a dynamic habitat. \nPier Piling Tank\nHave you ever wondered what is under the pier? This tank will give you a good idea! Pier pilings\, while man made\, do create a habitat for lots of animals ranging from mussels\, to crabs\, to fish and rays. The fish can either hide amongst the mussels or lay on the sand under the pier among the rays. \n\n\n\n \n\n\nMarine Science Gallery\n\nJewel Tank\nSee our animals in the spotlight with cool adaptive traits like our spotted rose anemone that has biofluorescence and our baby swell shark eggs that can camouflage as seaweed. The baby swell sharks are really cute when they hatch out too! \nPipefish Tank\nThe Pipefish tank is an example of a mudflat with eelgrass beds that act as a nursery for young fish and young sting rays. See if you can spot a pipefish in the eelgrass. \nArtificial Reef Tank\nThe Artificial Reef tank is an examples of man-made structures left behind that now act as reefs teaming with life from sea anemones on rock scallops to sea stars to juvenile rockfish. Can you see the bright orange Garibaldi with blue spots? \nOctopus Tank\nThe octopus tank is an example of a deep water habitat brought to life for our guests to see. It features anemones and rock scallops on the reef which also add structure and microhabitats to the reef. The decorator crab uses the colonial strawberry anemones to help decorate its body to camouflage with the reef. There are small but colorful rockfish like the half-banded rockfish that stay close to the rocks and use them as shelter. \nKid’s Kelp Corner\nHave you ever wondered oh why\, oh why did my goldfish die? Come find the answer in the Kid’s Kelp Corner. You can also relax and read the many ocean related books in our library while watching our inquisitive freshwater fish. \nDiscovery Center\nCome check out what it means to be a scientist! Observe plankton\, learn about the food chain\, and discover some of the aquarium’s smallest residents. \nSeahorse Tank\nSeahorses are some of the most fragile sea creatures in the ocean\, and they can camouflage to look like seaweed\, eelgrass\, or even sea fans. They use their tails to hold onto eelgrass and stay upright\, but they won’t swim except in short bursts. They have excellent eyesight that they use to track their prey\, which are small shrimps. \n  \n\n\n\nImmersion Gallery\n\n\n\n\n\nOctober through March\nMonday-Friday: 2PM – 5PM\nSaturday-Sunday: 10AM – 5PM\n\n\n\n\n\n\n}\n\n\nApril through September\nMonday-Friday: 2PM – 7PM\nSaturday-Sunday: 10AM – 7PM \nHours\nMonday: Closed\nTuesday – Saturday: 10:00am – 5:00pm\nSunday: 11:00am – 5:00pm \n  \n\n\nAdvanced timed-entry reservations are required.\n\n\n\n\n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nroundhouseaquarium.org/\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n  \n\n\n\n\n  \n
