A fantastic group of artists & dancers who work with LED Hula Hoops and other LED apparatus they can spin\, toss\, throw in the air\, etc. \n\n Very friendly and talented peeps.  \n \nCelebrating our love of  the FLOW at Glow Flow Santa Monica!\n\n\n\n\nHow to Capture the Glow Flow Moment\nIf spin isn’t your thing\, how about photography. Here are different ways to shoot Glow Flow Santa Monica. \nGOLDEN HOUR / BLUE HOUR\nYou can shoot available light for images of the artists. \nSLOW SHUTTER SPEED\nAs Glow Flow gets dark\, you can use a slow shutter speed to let the moving LED devices draw amazing “spirograph” shapes with light against the night sky. \nSLOW SYNC\nYou can combine both elements with slow sync or rear sync. A long shutter speed captures traces from LED Hula Hoops and then your on-or-off-camera flash lights the artist. \nTHE BEST FLASH?\nI haven’t had the best results with built-in pop-up flash. I like using an external flash in the hot-shoe. At Glow Flow\, We often say that having flash off the hot-shoe produces better lighting. For me\, in this case\, I think there’s so much going on\, that hot-shoe mounted flash works well. You could bring a light stand and battery powered strobe which might look great but seems like a lot of gear. \nTRIPOD?\nIf you use flash\, it will freeze the artist\, and the point-light-sources of the LEDs effectively freeze themselves\, so you can shoot this handheld. However\, you will get crisper images if you use a tripod. \nBRACKET\, BRACKET\, BRACKET!\nAs you can imagine\, dialing in your exposure can be a bit complicated! Plan to try a variety of different shutter speeds to see what works with the LEDs. The festival gets its name from the row (avali) of clay lamps (deepa) that Indians light outside their homes to symbolize the inner light that protects from spiritual darkness. This festival is as important to Hindus as the Christmas holiday is to Christians. \nOver the centuries\, Diwali has become a national festival that’s also enjoyed by non-Hindu communities. For instance\, in Jainism\, Diwali marks the nirvana\, or spiritual awakening\, of Lord Mahavira on October 15\, 527 B.C.; in Sikhism\, it honors the day that Guru Hargobind Ji\, the Sixth Sikh Guru\, was freed from imprisonment. Buddhists in India celebrate Diwali as well. \n  \n \n  \nWhen is Diwali 2021?\nDiwali is a five-day religious festival. The main festival day falls on a different date each autumn\, timed the Hindu lunar calendar\, but it usually falls in October or November. In 2021\, Diwali falls on Thursday\, Nov. 4. \nHow is Diwali celebrated?\nThe Diwali festival takes place over five days. \nThe First Day\, \nDhanteras\, is for celebrating Lakshmi\, the Hindu goddess of wealth\, prosperity\, youth and beauty. On this first day\, people buy new items such as jewelry\, clothing and utensils and light lamps to welcome Lakshm. \nThe Second Day\, \nknown as Chhoti Diwali\, Naraka Chaturdasior Kali Chaudas\, focuses on a story from Hindu mythology about the god Krishna and his defeat of the demon god Narakasura. On this day\, some people put up twinkling lights to celebrate his victory. \nThe Third Day\,\nknown as Diwali\, Deepawali\, or Lakshmi Puja\, is the most important day of the Diwali festival. On this day\, people visit family and friends to feast and exchange sweets and gifts. People also continue to light lamps and candles to welcome light and prosperity from the goddess Lakshmi. \nThe Fourth Day\,\nknown as Govardhan Puja or Padva\, some people in northern India build small piles of cow dung as a symbol of how Krishna defeated the king of the Hindu gods\, Indra\, by lifting up a mountain. \nThe First Day\,\nknown as Bhai Dooj or Yama Dwitiva\, is a day for brothers and sisters to honor one another. Siblings perform a ceremony called tilak and pray for one another. \nOn this final day of Diwali\, many people also set off fireworks. In 2017\, India’s supreme court banned the sale of fireworks for Diwali in the capital\, Delhi\, citing concerns about pollution and air quality. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWho celebrates Diwali?\nDiwali is celebrated by people across different faiths in India\, including Hindus\, Jains\, Sikhs\, and some Muslims and Buddhists. Many people with South Asian heritage in other parts of the world also celebrate Diwali. \nWhile Diwali is a religious festival\, it has also become a secular national holiday celebrated widely across India\, much like Christmas has become a holiday celebrated by Christians and non-Christians alike in the U.S. \n  \n \nWhat do people eat during Diwali?\nDiwali is a time for feasting with family and enjoying plenty of sweet treats. One popular delicacy is kaju katli\, a fudge-like sweet made with ground cashews and sugar\, and sometimes flavored with a touch of rose water. Another popular treat in northern India is besan burfi\, another kind of fudge-like bar made from flour\, sugar and cardamom and sprinkled with almonds or pistachios. Since its inception\, the Museum has been housed in the historic 1911 Elizabeth Milbank Anderson House. In 1957\, the Anderson House was designated as the Long Beach Museum of Art\, at which time the Museum began acquiring a permanent collection.\nIn 1977\, the Museum was honored with accreditation by the American Association of Museums\, which it has since maintained. In 2000\, the Museum completed a restoration of the historic residence and constructed a new two-story exhibition pavilion (in 2015 the pavilion was renamed the Hartman Pavilion). DESCRIPTION:EVERY DAY ’til MIDNIGHT- Dockweiler State Beach\nThe Dockweiler Beach Fire Pits are located about 3 miles south of Playa del Rey\, this inviting beach features 3 miles of shoreline\, an RV park\, and over 2\,000 regular vehicle parking spaces. The wide sandy beach lies beneath the departures flight path of LAX\, offering fantastic belly views of airlines headed out over the Pacific. The lot entrance is at Vista del Mar and Imperial Highway. \n\n\nFIRE PITS RULES\n\n\n\n\n\nAny grills or BBQs must fit inside the fire pit\, which is 2′ wide. No grills\, grilling\, or flames or fires on the sand.\nTo use the fire pits\, you bring your own charcoal or wood and a way to light them.\nPlease do not use sand to put out the fire.\nHelp keep our beaches clean by preventing ashes or debris from falling into the sand.\n\n  \n\n\n\nThere’s no better way to end a fun day at the beach than to circle up around a cozy bonfire. Not all California beaches allow bonfires\, but here in the Marina del Rey area\, we’re lucky that Dockweiler State Beach does permit regulated burns in provided fire rings. Follow these tips to ensure your group has an enjoyable time. \n\nIf you want a pit\, arrive early. From May through September\, the pits are in high demand\, especially on the weekends\, and there are some diehards who arrive at dawn to claim their spots for the entire day. You cannot reserve fire pits as you would a campsite. Do not leave your pit unattended\, even for a quick dip in the ocean – if you do\, don’t be surprised to find another group has taken over the site. There are between 60 – 80 fire pits located just north and south of where Vista del Mar intersects with Imperial Highway. That sounds like a lot\, but consider that Dockweiler is also home to an RV park\, and you’re all competing for space.\nBring everything you need – wood\, s’mores\, snacks\, et cetera (see “Your Packing List” below).\nThe beach and all amenities close at midnight.\nBefore you leave\, snuff out the flame with water. Stir the embers after they are covered with water and make sure that everything is saturated. Do not use sand to distinguish the fire\, as it creates a mess for the next guest.\n\n \nYOUR PACKING LIST\n\nWood and charcoal (wood for that nice bonfire and charcoal for cooking – see below about barbecue rules). Both can be purchased at Ralph’s grocery stores: 4700 Admiralty Way\, Marina del Rey; 8701 Lincoln Boulevard\, Playa del Rey. Only burn clean wood (nothing treated with paint\, chemicals\, etc.) in the pits.\nFire starter and a lighter. You can purchase kindling from most any grocery\, home supply\, or sporting-goods store. Or\, prepare your own starter with this old-school camping craft: Fill a cardboard egg carton with dryer lint\, wood shavings\, paper shreds\, or other ignitable materials. Pour a small amount of melted candle wax into each cup to make things stay put. Break off cups individually and place into your wood stack. Light the cardboard cups and watch how easy your fire takes off – even in the wind.\nIf barbecuing\, note that large stand-up barbeques are NOT allowed on the sand or in the parking lots. However\, you can bring a low-profile version and place it inside the fire ring.\nLong-handle grilling sticks. These are great for cooking hot dogs and kabobs and roasting marshmallows.\nHot glove or mitt. Don’t ruin your night with a burn from handling hot wood\, pots\, or grills. Items like the Ove Glove offer protection while still allowing dexterity.\nFood! Doubt you’ll forget this\, but you may want a separate checklist so that you remember all the elements for your meal. It’s easy to overlook things like serving spoons\, plastic utensils\, salt and pepper\, napkins or wet wipes\, and containers for leftovers. Paper plates are great for cookouts since they’re ok to burn in the fire afterward.\nCamp/beach table. Depending on the size of your group\, you may prefer to set up your dinner fixings buffet style on a simple folding table. Whatever you bring\, remember that you’ll need to carry it across the sand to the pit and back to the parking lot at the end of your evening. The park contains an ecological preserve and is famous for its outstanding tide pools. \nIt is worth checking tide charts to visit these beaches at low tide for the tide pools and the tunnels. \nDAILY TIDE CHARTS HERE\n  \n \nOut at the end and right at the base of the points there are amazing rock tunnels where waves rush in and crash through. \n  \nTrails meander on the bluff out to excellent views from two prominent points. Below these points are three separate coves with beaches and tide pools. \nAbalone Cove Park features 2 beaches (Abalone Cove and Sacred Cove)\, tide pools\, bluff top viewing areas and trails crisscrossing the area. The park contains a State Ecological Preserve and taking of protected animals and marine life is prohibited. There is direct access to a parking lot off Palos Verdes Drive South. Access to Abalone Cove Beach is by a long trail from the parking lot. To access Sacred Cove\, users must walk along Palos Verdes Drive South to 1 of 2 trails between Portuguese and Inspiration Points. Lifeguards are on duty at Abalone Cove Beach during summer hours and weekends only. The views of the ocean and Catalina Island are spectacular. Barbeques and fires are prohibited at this site. DESCRIPTION:OPEN WEEKENDS- Mt Wilson\nMount Wilson Observatory is located on the summit of Mount Wilson above Pasadena at an altitude of 5715 feet. Mount Wilson Observatory is visible from much of the Los Angeles area. Free of charge\, this is a must see experience. \n  \n \n\n\nViewing through the 100-Inch Hooker Telescope\nThe world’s largest telescope from 1917 to 1949\, the 100-inch Telescope forever changed our understanding of the scale and nature of our Universe and launched a revolution in astronomy that continues through today. This world-heritage class instrument\, used by many of the greatest astronomers of the Twentieth Century\, has only recently been made available for regular public viewing. It is the largest telescope in the world that you can rent! Imagine looking through the telescope used by astronomers Edwin Hubble and Milton Humason in the late 1920s to measure the expansion of the Universe. \n\n  \n \nThe 60 inch Telescope\nMount Wilson Observatory’s 60-inch telescope was completed in 1908 by Observatory founder George Ellery Hale with funding from Andrew Carnegie. It was the world’s largest operational telescope until Hale went on to complete the Mt. Wilson 100-inch telescope in 1917. For a more detailed history of this revolutionary instrument\, which became the model for all large observatory telescopes of the future\, see the article “Building the 60-inch Telescope.” Among the many important discoveries from the 60-inch telescope was Harlow Shapley’s revelation in 1918 that the accepted view of the time\, that our Sun was near the center of the Milky Way Galaxy\, was wrong. Shapley used the light gathering power of the 60-inch to show that our solar system is instead half way out toward the edge of our Galaxy. The telescope was a workhorse instrument for astronomy for over half a century and used by astronomical luminaries such as Edwin Hubble\, Walter Baade\, and Allan Sandage to unravel the secrets of stars and galaxies. Now retired from active scientific service\, the 60-inch and the 100-inch telescopes are the largest in the world made exclusively available to the public. With their large light-collecting mirrors and the exquisite skies over Mount Wilson\, these historic telescopes provide an unrivaled and unique astronomical experience. \n\n\n\n\n\nCHARA (Center for High Angular Resolution Astronomy)\nMount Wilson’s newest astronomical instruments are Georgia State University’s optical interferometric array of six telescopes. This facility\, located here because of the exceptional seeing conditions\, puts Mount Wilson back on the cutting edge of astrophysics. The full array was completed in 2004. Each telescope of the CHARA Array has a light-collecting mirror 1-meter in diameter. The telescopes are dispersed over the mountain to provide a two-dimensional layout that provides the resolving capability (but not the light collecting ability!) of a single telescope a fifth of a mile in diameter. Light from the individual telescopes is conveyed through vacuum tubes to a central Beam Synthesis Facility in which the six beams are combined together. When the paths of the individual beams are matched to an accuracy of less than one micron\, after the light traverses distances of hundreds of meters\, the Array then acts like a single coherent telescope for the purposes of achieving exceptionally high angular resolution. The Array is capable of resolving details as small as 200 micro-arcseconds\, equivalent to the angular size of a nickel seen from a distance of 10\,000 miles. In terms of the number and size of its individual telescopes\, its ability to operate at visible and near infrared wavelengths\, and its longest baselines of 330 meters\, the CHARA Array is arguably the most powerful instrument of its kind in the world. \nScience Objectives\nThe Array is applicable to problems in almost all areas of contemporary astronomy. It is particularly suited to stellar astrophysics where it will be used to measure the diameters\, distances\, masses\, and luminosities of stars\, as well as to image features such as spots and flares on their surfaces. Other projects range from detecting planetary systems\, imaging stars in process of formation\, and studies of bright transient phenomena like novae. \nFor more information on this amazing research facility and the science that is emerging from it\, please go to the CHARA array homepage. There you can find a video\, Sizing up the Stars\, that explains how interferometry works. \n\n\n\n \nAstronomical Museum\nAlso on the mountain\, next to the 100-inch telescope\, there is a new exhibit hall that displays Albert Michelson’s original interferometer\, used to get the first measurement of stars other than our Sun.  The exhibit hall reveals in detail how the light is combined in the new CHARA area. \nWeekend Public Guided Tours\n\n\n\n\n\nDocent-led walking tours of the observatory take place on Saturdays and Sundays through November 29. The two hour tours depart at 11:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. sharp from the Cosmic Cafe located above the large parking lot at the entrance to the Observatory. A special feature of these tours is entrance into both the 60-inch and 100-inch telescope domes\, as well as the observing room of the 150-foot Solar Tower Telescope.  On rare occasions\, a telescope may be closed to the tour due to a special event or maintenance. \n\n\nPurchasing Tickets \nTickets are $15 (adults) and $13 (ages 12 and under & 62 and older). Tour tickets are available for same-day purchase at the Cosmic Café\, and rarely sell out. For each tour\, 15 spots are available. \nIf you have a large group\, we urge you to opt for a private tour instead. These can be arranged by sending an email request to tours@mtwilson.edu. \nChildren under age 6 are not permitted. The tours involve about a mile of walking and climbing some stairs. Written by Hal McAlister\, the second director of the Mount Wilson Institute and founder of CHARA\, it is a well-illustrated guide to all the points of interest on the mountaintop. \n\n\n\n\nElevation Warning\nThe high elevation of the Observatory (5715 ft) and the change in elevation during the approximately one-mile and two-hour long tour are unsuitable for individuals with respiratory and heart problems or with limited mobility. \nThe century-old facilities are not ADA-compliant and\, except for the Astronomical Museum and the Cosmic Cafe\, offer no access to those who cannot climb multiple flights of stars. Thus\, tours of the Observatory\, either guided or unguided\, are inappropriate for some elderly people and for those who are not in good health. \nVisitors should take these factors into consideration before touring the Observatory. \n\n\n\nParking\n\n\n\nA U.S. Forest Service Adventure Pass is required to park at the Observatory\, as it is located on U.S. Forest Service land. A day pass may be purchased at the Cosmic Cafe (when it is open from April 4 to November 29 in 2020) on weekends between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Other times\, the $5 day pass or the $30 dollar annual pass may be purchased at many locations around Los Angeles before you head up.  Click here to go to the U.S. Forest Service website for more information about the Adventure Pass and where to buy them. DESCRIPTION:OPEN EVERY FRIDAY-SUNDAY- Hollywood\nThe Hollywood Heritage Museum\, is located in the Lasky-DeMille Barn\, which was built in 1901.  The story of the early Hollywood motion picture industry and the historic Hollywood community is told through archival photographs\, historic documents\, movie props and related memorabilia.  Visitors experience the actual structure where Cecil B. DeMille’s office exists\, furnished with selected personal DeMille belongings\, and where countless movies were filmed and studio staff worked and played. \nOn December 27\, 1956\, the Lasky-DeMille Barn was designated California State Historic Landmark No. 554\, recognizing the significant role the building played in the birth of the Hollywood motion picture industry.  Since 1985\, Hollywood Heritage\, Inc. has funded the preservation\, restoration and maintenance of the barn. It’s the oldest existing motion picture production building in Hollywood\, having been established as the Burns-Revier Studio in 1912\, and becoming the Jesse L. Lasky Feature Play Company in 1913.  The Lasky Company merged with Adolph Zuckor’s Famous Players in 1916\, becoming Famous Players-Lasky and merging with Paramount Distributing Company\, finally becoming Paramount Pictures Corporation. In 2014\, the Lasky-DeMille Barn was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. [See the Time Line on the Museum link for a more detailed history of the barn]. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nVISITING THE MUSEUM\nThe Hollywood Heritage Museum is open Friday\, Saturday and Sunday from noon until 4 pm. As we share our ample parking lot with the Hollywood Bowl\, the museum is occasionally closed when the Bowl has an event.  If you are traveling a long way to visit us\, it might be a good idea to phone first to make sure we are open: (323) 874-2276. \n\n\nPARKING\nParking is free. There is a large parking area on the east side of Highland Avenue\, in front of the museum.  There is no entrance facing Highland Avenue.  You have to go around the corner either on Milner Road or Odin Street and immediately turn into the lot.  If there are parking lot attendants at a barricade\, tell them that you are visiting the museum. \nPUBLIC TRANSPORTATION\nThe Metro subway station closest to the Museum is the Hollywood-Highland stop.  We are located approximately a half-mile north on Highland Avenue\, about a 12-minute walk. \nBECOME A DOCENT:\nHollywood Heritage is a volunteer driven organization. Our docents assist museum guests and help with our Barn programs\, as well as many other activities associated with historic preservation issues and the day-to-day activities that make our organization so vital.  If you are interested in becoming involved\, click here. \n  \n \nHOLLYWOOD HERITAGE ARCHIVE:\nHollywood Heritage maintains an archive of historic photographs\, documents\, and other material related to the film industry and the community.  Our archive also includes considerable holdings on Hollywood real estate history and buildings of architectural significance.  We continue to seek material related to our dual mission of industry and community history.  Questions regarding our archive and donations procedures should be directed to our Collections Manager\, Richard Adkins. \nDONATION OF PHYSICAL ITEMS:\nHollywood Heritage welcomes donations both monetary and physical objects.  Donated items fall into two categories. \nFor resale in the Museum Store:  The museum store contains new and used items.  The older items are all donated to Hollywood Heritage and include books on the motion picture industry and its participants\, and books on the Los Angeles area.  It also includes used DVDs\, VHS tapes and other electronic storage of motion pictures\, as well as related items. These types of donated items can be dropped off at the museum along with the donor’s name and address so that\, if desired\, donor recognition and/or a tax letter can be provided by the Collections Manager. \nFor Hollywood Heritage Archive:  These are items that Hollywood Heritage’s curator agrees are compatible with our collection.  An appointment may be set up with our Collections Manager.  Much of the collection has been donated by individuals and families with relatives who contributed to the film industry and the Hollywood community\, often with the goal of preserving their relatives’ participation in Hollywood.
