Today\, the Italian Hall is the oldest remaining structure from Los Angeles’ Italian enclave and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. \n \nTHE HISTORY\nItalians and Italian Americans have played an instrumental role in the development of Los Angeles as one of the world’s greatest metropolises\, yet the history of Italians in the region is largely unknown. Though Los Angeles is home to the nation’s fifth-largest Italian population today\, and the Italian presence in the American West predates the nation’s founding\, seldom is the city included in dialogs surrounding contemporary or historic Italian American communities. An examination of the region’s Italian roots reveals both the complexity of the Italian Diaspora and the exceptionally diverse fabric of Southern California’s history. \n \nThe Los Angeles Italian experience contrasts with that of Italian immigrants elsewhere in the country and reveals the complexity of the Italian American diaspora. Given the success that Italian Americans have achieved in the United States\, it is easy to forget that they\, like other minority groups\, faced considerable prejudice and hostility in their struggle to achieve the American Dream. In the American South\, Italians were a common target of lynchings and racially-motivated violence. In the early 20th century\, eugenicists described Italians as genetically inferior\, while political cartoons of the era depicted Italians as threats to American security and racial purity. \nTHE MISSION\nThe mission of the Italian American Museum of Los Angeles is to foster a deeper understanding of Southern California’s diverse heritage through research\, historic preservation\, exhibitions\, and educational programs that examine the history and continuing contributions of Italian Americans in multi-ethnic Los Angeles and the United States. \nThe IAMLA is a charity that depends on donations to accomplish its specific mission. DESCRIPTION:OPEN THURSDAY – SUNDAY- Santa Monica\nThe Santa Monica History Museum was founded under the “Historical Activities Committee” of Santa Monica’s Centennial Celebration in 1975 and by a public poll\, with their goal to collect\, preserve\, and be the caretaker of history. Its name at that time was the Santa Monica Historical Society and it was designated as the official collector and preserver of the history\, art\, and culture of the Santa Monica Bay Area. Former Mayor Clo Hoover\, the first woman mayor of Santa Monica\, was elected the first president. \n\nThe museum\, one of the largest in the country for a city the size of Santa Monica\, has grown far beyond expectations with an expansive collection of artifacts\, photographs\, and memorabilia. Thousands of hours have been dedicated to public education and museum services. \n \nWith the help of Louise and Bob Gabriel who had been active in the community for years and had a strong love for Santa Monica and its history took on the responsibility to make the museum a reality.  Within three years\, with determination\, perseverance\, and countless hours of work\, Bob headed the fundraising committee and raised the necessary funds. Louise was able to get all the furnishings for the museum donated by companies that were going out of business. Bob found a temporary rent‐free location on Colorado Avenue. \n\n\nOur Mission\nThe Santa Monica History Museum’s mission is to collect\, preserve and share the history and culture of Santa Monica for generations to come. \n\n\n\n\nOur Vision\nThe Santa Monica History Museum is the steward of the rich history of the Santa Monica Bay area. We are committed to enriching our community by providing public access to our extensive collection with interpretive exhibitions\, public programs\, community partnerships\, and through archival and research services. \n\n\n\nCURRENT EXHIBITION FROM APRIL 1 – DECEMBER 23\, 2022\nBroadway to Freeway:\nLife and Times of a Vibrant Community\n \nIn the mid-20th century\, the Broadway neighborhood was a thriving\, tight-knit community in Santa Monica. Built by African American\, Mexican American\, and immigrant communities\, the Broadway neighborhood was a haven for those who were excluded from other parts of the city by racist and anti-immigrant policies and practices. \nThis exhibition tells the story of how residents built Broadway into a flourishing community of color – and how the Interstate 10 freeway destroyed it in the 1960s. The vibrant lives of pioneering individuals – like the first African American teacher and social worker hired in Santa Monica – are knitted into the neighborhood they built together. The community populated Broadway with welcoming schools\, homes\, and businesses – from beauty parlors and jazz clubs\, to the malt shop\, tortilleria\, and Jewish deli. \n \nFeaturing period photographs\, advertisements\, oral histories\, and songs\, the exhibition draws on the wealth of archival material collected by the Quinn Research Center\, which is dedicated to preserving the history of African American life in Santa Monica. \nToday\, little evidence remains of the community on the blocks between 13th Street and 20th Street\, once the heart of the Broadway neighborhood. DESCRIPTION:FREE EVERY THIRD THURSDAY- Little Tokyo\nJapanese American National Museum is the first gallery in the United States dedicated to sharing the experience of Americans of Japanese ancestry as an integral part of U.S. story. Through its comprehensive collection of objects\, images and documents\, as well as multi-faceted exhibitions\, educational programs\, documentaries and publications. The Japanese American Museum is admission free every Thursday from 5–8 p.m. \nAlso on the third Thursday of every month\, the Japanese American Museum is FREE ALL DAY!\n \nAmericans of Japanese Ancestry\nThe Japanese American Museum was established in Los Angeles to preserve the rich heritage Asian culture. The gallery is dedicated to preserving the history and culture. It is located in the Little Tokyo area near downtown Los Angeles\, California. \n\n\n\nWe believe in the importance of remembering our history\, to better guard against the prejudice that threatens liberty and equality in a democratic society. We strive as a world-class institution to provide a voice and forum that enables all people to explore their own heritage and culture. \n\n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n\n\nFree admission all day to see Under a Mushroom Cloud: Hiroshima\, Nagasaki\, and the Atomic Bomb; Fighting for Democracy: Who is the “We” in “We\, the People”?; and Common Ground: The Heart of Community. \n\n\n\n\n\nIn conjunction with the exhibition Under a Mushroom Cloud: Hiroshima\, Nagasaki\, and the Atomic Bomb\n\n\n\n\nFREE Common Ground Audio Guides\nJANM offers iPod Touch audio guides to complement its core exhibition\, Common Ground: The Heart of Community. The guides are available in English\, Japanese\, Korean\, Mandarin\, and Spanish. Visitors may borrow an iPod Touch with the guides free of charge while viewing the exhibition. The guides may also be downloaded free from the Apple App Store. \nJANM’s audio guides are made possible by a generous grant from the Nitto Tire U.S.A. DESCRIPTION:FREE TUESDAY-SATURDAY- Walt Disney Concert Hall\nThe Walt Disney Concert Hall offers free self-guided audio tours now available year-round. The fully revamped tour takes visitors through the Concert Hall’s history from conception to completion. Narrated by Emmy and Tony Award-winning actor John Lithgow\, the tour provides insight from visionary architect Frank Gehry and other key contributors.\n\n\nNew technology allows visitors to use their smartphones to follow the tour and hear behind-the-scenes details about the planning\, thought and design that went into the construction of this architectural and auditory masterpiece. For visitors not using a smartphone\, Podcatchers are available at the Tour Check-In table. \n\nSelf-Guided Audio Tour Details:\n\nTours run daily 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.*\nComplimentary\nFor individuals or groups of up to 14 guests\nGo at your own pace (approximately 60 minutes)\nPhoto I.D. required to use the Podcatcher\nUse of Podcatcher for ages 10 and older\nTours begins in the Grand Lobby of Walt Disney Concert Hall\nThe last tour of the day is at 2:00 p.m.\n\nPlease note at this time:\n\nThe Walt Disney Concert Hall parking garage is closed on weekends.\nVisitors are advised to park in The Music Center main campus parking garage if visiting The Music Center on the weekends.
