DESCRIPTION:SPECIAL EXHIBITION AT THE BROAD: MAY 21 – SEPTEMBER 25\, 2022\nFeaturing over twenty artists\, the special exhibition This Is Not America’s Flag spotlights the myriad ways artists explore the symbol of the flag of the United States of America\, underscoring its vast\, divergent\, and complex meanings. \nTitled after Alfredo Jaar’s iconic 1987 work\, A Logo for America\, This Is Not America’s Flag provides a critical discourse on the symbol’s meaning\, the complexity and contradictions of contemporary national identity\, and artists as active citizens. \nThe exhibition was developed conceptually in the summer of 2020 during the groundswell of activism for racial justice in the wake of the murders of George Floyd\, Ahmaud Arbery\, and Breonna Taylor and was inspired by two works in the Broad collection\, Flag (1967) by Jasper Johns and African-American Flag (1990) by David Hammons. \nThis Is Not America’s Flag presents works from over twenty artists including Laura Aguilar\, Nicole Eisenman\, Jeffrey Gibson\, Jaar\, and Johns\, as well as African-American Flag (1990) by Hammons acquired by The Broad in 2019 and America (2021) by Hank Willis Thomas\, acquired last year. The exhibition includes works that both embrace the flag as the signifier of the nation and its ideals and subvert it to express injustices and inequities woven into the fabric of the U.S.\, past\, and present. \n\nHighlighted Artwork\nAmerica\nHank Willis Thomas\n2021\nMixed media including US flags\n \n  \nAfrican-American Flag\n\nDavid Hammons\n\n\n1990\n\n\ndyed cotton\n\n\n59 x 92 1/4 in. The Forest Lawn Museum first opened in 1952 and is located adjacent to the Hall of Crucifixion-Resurrection at Forest Lawn – Glendale.  Forest Lawn’s founder\, Dr. Hubert Eaton\, wrote in his Builder’s Creed that our park should be “a place where artists study and sketch; where school teachers bring happy children to see the things they read of in books.” In that spirit\, the Forest Lawn Museum displays a permanent collection\, as well as world-class rotating exhibits. Like monuments and national anthems\, they intend to create a sense of identity-based on a shared past\, present\, and future. \nLike many other governments\, the communist countries of the twentieth century produced an abundance of flags and banners. They were omnipresent at military parades\, sports events\, and public gatherings. Apart from national flags\, many organizations produced their own richly decorated flags and banners. The Wende Museum holds over 2\,000 of these ornamental textiles in its collection. \nMartin Roemers: Relics of the Cold War\n \nDuring an eleven-year period\, from 1998 through 2009\, Dutch photographer Martin Roemers photographed the structural and topographic remnants of the Cold War in both the East and West. His research took him to Russia\, Poland\, Czech Republic\, Ukraine\, Latvia\, Lithuania\, Great Britain\, Netherlands\, Belgium\, and Germany\, where he documented underground tunnels\, abandoned army bases\, military training areas\, rotting tanks\, and destroyed monuments. \nLight–guard–house: Installation by Farrah Karapetian\n \nThe 20-square-foot aluminum guardhouse that sat outside the ADN headquarters in East Berlin from 1971–92 is both an artifact of an atmosphere of mistrust and representative of past and current political protectionism. Artist Farrah Karapetian will turn this structure into a lighthouse\, changing a gesture of suspicion into a gesture of welcome. The windows of the guardhouse will be tinted in a rainbow gradient encompassing all of the colors potentially included in national flags. Over the course of Wende’s concurrent exhibition\, The Medium is the Message: Flags and Banners\, Karapetian will engage with the public about experiences they have had as migrants. As the stories accumulate and become available on the museum’s website\, the light inside the lighthouse will pause at the various colors associated with the flags of the respective national borders crossed. Rather than the finality of immigration\, the artist’s focus is the prevalence of migration\, asking visitors: What experiences of welcome or mistrust have occurred as you have moved internationally? This 2021 Season we will be debuting the Hummingbird trail (Park to Playa trail + Bowl loop)\, which is more flat and takes you through a beautiful hummingbird garden. Both hikes will be about 40-45 minutes. \n​ \nWhat if I only want to do the yoga class\, what is the easiest way to get to yoga at 9 am? \nYou can pay $7 cash for parking\, enter at the La Cienega entrance\, and park right by the Burke Roche picnic area/restrooms. The location is The Clubhouse Theater which is a small location literally right beside Jon’s Grocery store entrance on Vermont Ave. You’ll see some comedy posters on the windows out front. \n \nAugust 12th’s show will feature improv teams The Funnies\, Dearly Beloved\, and a superstar team of greats including Peter Banifaz\, Will Hines\, and Jim Woods. \nThere is free parking all over the shopping center lot including in front of the theater. You’ll probably see lots of people standing right outside the doors of the theater. \n\n \n1607 North Vermont Avenue\, Los Angeles\, CA 90027 \n \nThe Clubhouse is your home base for indie improv shows and classes\, sketch\, and a place for the comm. It is an independently owned and operated comedy theatre in the Los Feliz area of Los Angeles. There are classes and shows 7 days a week\, 365 days a year. \nEvery show at the Clubhouse is run by the people who perform there and is offered free of charge. The entire theatre is paid for by the donations that are taken at each show. If you do not have cash on hand\, most teams offer their Venmo or Paypal info. The Clubhouse is also the only theatre in town that offers ample free parking on site for everyone both onstage and in the audience. There are plenty of options for new and seasoned improvisers\, comics\, and writers to get stage time. \n \nUnlike many other theaters in Los Angeles\, the Clubhouse has no house teams\, has no specific form or curriculum\, and is open to everybody. The inside mural was designed by local artist Bodeck Hernandez\, the delicately painted Ficklewood logo mark was done by signage expert\, Nat Losbaker\, the bark-like cider tap handles were ingeniously created by local craftsman Randy Baranowsky and most importantly brand strategist and lead visionary Jeff Parker of AkinsParker also proudly calls Long Beach home. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEXPERIENCE\n\n\nWhile most manufacturers separate the tasting room from the fermentation process\, we welcome it. Our open layout allows you to take in the deep aromatic wonders of perfectly aging blends from California’s finest orchards\, while being a part of the process. \n​Experience a 9-foot-high long pour from one of our exclusive ciders. As the cider falls from near the ceiling\, it aerates the beverage\, imparting effervescence into the cider.
