SUMMARY:The FOWLER MUSEUM: Reflecting Culture
DESCRIPTION:ON PERMANENT DISPLAY- Westwood Village\, UCLA\nUCLA Fowler Museum presents\n\n\nReflecting Culture: The Francis E. Cowler\, Jr. Collection of Silver\n \nComprising 251 objects representing 16th through 19th century Europe\, Great Britain\, and the United States\, this exhibition interprets silver in its social contexts. Gleaming vessels from renowned workshops—such as those of British silversmith Paul de Lamerie (c.1800)\, Russian jeweler Karl Fabergé (c.1900)\, and American patriot silversmith Paul Revere (c.1760)—highlight important styles and techniques. \n\n\n  \n\n\n308 Charles E. Young Dr N\, Los Angeles\, CA 90024 \n\nFREE EVERY DAY! @ UCLA\nThe Fowler Museum at UCLA explores global arts and cultures with an emphasis on works from Africa\, Asia\, the Pacific\, and the Americas—past\, and present. The Fowler enhances understanding and appreciation of the diverse peoples\, cultures\, and religions of the world through dynamic exhibitions\, publications\, and public programs\, informed by interdisciplinary approaches and the perspectives of the cultures represented. \nAlso featured is the work of international contemporary artists presented within the complex frameworks of politics\, culture\, and social action. \nFowler Museum at UCLA provides exciting\, informative\, and thought-provoking exhibitions and events for the UCLA community and the people of greater Los Angeles and beyond. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nAreas of the Collection\n\n\n\n\nARTS OF AFRICA AND THE AFRICAN DIASPORA\n \nOne of the largest and finest in the United States\, and one of the top twenty African collections worldwide\, this collection offers a superb representation of the arts of many African nations\, including objects from Senegal\, Nigeria\, Ghana\, Cameroon\, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire)\, Kenya\, Zambia\, and South Africa. The Yoruba collection alone is one of the three finest in the world. It contains a spectacular array of beaded objects\, including a majestic throne\, elaborate chiefly gowns and sophisticated divination regalia. \nA collection of post-apartheid election materials and contemporary South African art is being developed\, as are a number of collections of popular urban arts from countries including Tanzania and Muslim Senegal. Recently\, more than 400 textiles made by the Kuba peoples of the Democratic Republic of the Congo were gifted by the Christensen Foundation. \nThe collection represents some of the finest examples of men’s embroidered raffia pile cloths and women’s appliqué cloths. This collection complements already significant holdings of West African textiles from countries such as Mali and Ghana\, including kente and adinkra cloth and Asafo flags. The museum also has significant holdings of arts from the African Americas\, and notable arts from Haitian Vodou\, Brazil\, and Suriname. \n\n\n\nARTS OF THE AMERICAS\n\n\n \nThese holdings include a comprehensive collection of pre-Columbian ceramics with the best representations from West Mexico\, the Valley of Mexico\, and pre-Columbian Peru (with special strengths in the art of the Moche). The Fowler also possesses a cohesive collection of Guatemalan costumes; an extensive collection of Mexican clothing; textiles of Peru; and a comprehensive representation of field-collected market materials from Michoacan\, Mexico. Complementing the pre-Columbian collections are field collections of the Warao and Yecuana Indians of the Orinoco Delta of Venezuela and contemporary Latin American popular arts including Mexican trees of life\, Day of the Dead figures\, and masks from Metepec\, Oaxaca\, Michoacan\, Jalisco\, Puebla\, and Guanajuato. \nNative American materials from the U.S. and Canada are a small but significant part of the collection. Materials from the United States and Canada include well-known Northwest Coast material\, as well as a notable cross-section of late nineteenth-century Inuit art and material culture. \n\n\n\nARTS OF ASIA AND THE PACIFIC\n\n\n \nThe Fowler Museum at UCLA collections from Insular Southeast Asia\, including Indonesia\, the Philippines\, Malaysia\, and aboriginal Taiwan\, are among the strongest in the United States. The Indonesian and Philippine textiles reinforce the Fowler Museum’s standing as a major repository for the textile arts. Also included are significant collections of sculptural material from Sumatra\, Borneo\, Sulawesi\, and Luzon\, puppetry from Java and Bali\, basketry from Indonesia and the Philippines\, and metalwork from the Philippines. The primary strength of the Pacific collections lies in materials from Papua New Guinea\, especially the Papuan Gulf\, Trobriand Islands\, Sepik River\, and Maprik region. Australia and Polynesia are also represented by sizeable collections\, including 45 rare Maori cloaks. \nThe collections from mainland Asia are smaller but growing rapidly\, due to current collecting priorities. A collection of betel-chewing paraphernalia\, representing several countries in South and Southeast Asia\, is considered one of the finest in the world. Other holdings include textiles from Bhutan\, Pakistan\, India\, and Japan\, baskets and decorative arts from Japan\, puppetry from China\, Thailand\, India\, and Turkey\, and art and artifacts from Nepal. \n\n\n\nARCHAEOLOGICAL COLLECTIONS\n\n\n \nThe Fowler Museum at UCLA also serves as a repository for archaeological collections acquired during research conducted by UCLA faculty\, staff\, students\, and other professional archaeologists. Documentation of the collections includes artifact catalogs\, excavation notes\, maps\, and photographs. These collections serve primarily as an archive for teaching and research. The Museum is compliant with guidelines mandated by the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) and has been signaled out by the State of California for its exemplary efforts. \nArchaeological collection areas include: \nCalifornia \nCollections from approximately 1100 sites\, mostly in Southern California. \nSouthwest \nSignificant collections from the Rainbow Bridge-Monument Valley Expedition of 1933-1938 and several Parowan Fremont sites in Utah were excavated in the 1950s\, and other Anasazi and Hohokam sites. \nMexico \nIncludes objects from 218 sites\, mostly in western and central Mexico. \nSudan \nThe Nubian/Egyptian fortress site at Askut is the source of approximately 60\,000 artifacts excavated by UCLA archaeologist Alexander Badawy in conjunction with the Aswan High Dam Salvage Campaign\, 1962-1964. \nOld World stone tool collection \nIncludes tools from Europe and the Middle East. \n\n\nMUSEUM HOURS\n\nAdmission is FREE \nMonday – Tuesday: closed\nWednesday – Sunday: 12:00 pm – 5:00 pm \n\n\nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nfowler.ucla.edu\n \n\n  \nFind more

SUMMARY:Pacific Marine Mammal Center
DESCRIPTION:OPEN DAILY – Laguna Beach\nWELCOME TO THE PACIFIC MARINE MAMMAL CENTER! The Pacific Marine Mammal Center rescues\, rehabilitates\, and releases marine mammals\, and in doing so we contribute to ocean science and conservation. See some of our current rescued patients recovering! We are run primarily by volunteers who will greet you in our visitor yard and introduce you to our California sea lions\, Northern elephant seals\, Pacific harbor seals\, or Northern fur seal patients. Our visitor yard features interactive displays\, marine mammal artifacts\, and a Treasure Trove gift shop. There is no charge for admission\, but donations are appreciated! PMMC also offers educational programs for all ages. \nOPEN DAILY FROM 10:00 am TO 4:00 pm\n \nReservations are required for groups of 10 or more only\, smaller groups need not make reservations. We are closed on Thanksgiving\, Christmas Eve\, Christmas Day\, and New Year’s Day. \n\n\nBOOK YOUR GROUP HERE!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n20612 Laguna Canyon Road Laguna Beach\, CA 92651 \nHISTORY\nPacific Marine Mammal Center began as Friends of the Sea Lion in 1971 with only three volunteers: Jim Stauffer\, John Cunningham\, and Dr. Rose Ekeberg. \nIn the spring of 1971\, a little girl approached Jim Stauffer\, a Newport Beach lifeguard\, on the beach.  The little girl told Jim that she had seen a seal on the beach.  Jim hopped in his lifeguard jeep and went to go investigate.  What he found was a young Pacific harbor seal. When Jim placed the animal in his jeep\, it leaped right out.  Jim decided the animal must be healthy and just needed to rest\, so he returned to work.  \nConcern for the animal nagged at him all day. When Jim returned to check on the small seal\, it was still on the beach.  Jim picked up the seal and took it to the Dover Shores Animal Hospital\, where Dr. Rod La Shell examined the animal and found that it had lungworms.  With advice from Dr. La Shell\, Jim nursed the harbor seal back to health and released the animal back into the ocean. \n \nMISSION STATEMENT\n“The Pacific Marine Mammal Center rescues\, rehabilitates\, and releases marine mammals and inspires ocean stewardship through research\, education\, and collaboration.” \nRescue\n \nUnlike whales and dolphins\, seals and sea lions don’t have to remain in the water in order to survive. The animals beach themselves to be warm and dry when feeling ill. They seek rest on land for a variety of reasons and are not always in need of intervention. Our staff is trained to recognize animals suffering from infections\, malnourishment\, pneumonia\, gill net strangulation\, etc. which can harm an animal’s chance for survival. \nRehabilitation\n \nWhen a “patient” is admitted\, our staff performs all necessary procedures under the direction and protocols set by the Animal Care Director and our Veterinary Medical Director. During the course of rehabilitation\, animals require a variety of treatments such as administration of antibiotics and subcutaneous fluids\, tube feeding\, force-feeding\, wound care\, etc. \nMost animals come in dehydrated and the most effective means to provide fluids and nourishment is through tube feeding. The process requires the blending of fish\, electrolytes\, warm water\, vitamins\, and medication into a fish formula. This formula is fed to the animals by inserting a flexible tube into the stomach using large syringes. As soon as the animals are hydrated and stable\, we wean them to eat whole fish. \nRelease\n \nOnce an animal has gained an optimal weight and is competing for food\, it’s ready for release. Prior to release\, each animal is tagged with an identification number. The color-coded tags indicate the animal has been rehabilitated and helps identify the specific animal and care center in case the animal needs care in the future. We strive to return every one of our patients back to the wild once their care with us is complete. \nEducation\nIt is not enough to rescue and rehabilitate these animals. We must communicate what needs to be done so that positive change can happen. PMMC strives to inspire ocean stewardship in all generations through sharing the stories of the animals we assist. Over 50\,000 people learn about conservation by talking with our education docents and interacting with exhibits in our visitor yard each year. We welcome over 7\,000 children\, most through our free programs for at-risk communities\, in our onsite experiential-based education programs that teach the importance of marine science and eco-friendly behavior. Our outreach team engages thousands of more people in offsite programs\, which share the importance of community involvement. Additionally\, through distance learning technology\, our education department brings conservation messaging to children and adults all over the nation and internationally. \nResearch\n \nAn important part of marine mammal recovery is ongoing research. Research is being done to find the pathological conditions that affect the marine mammals of Southern California. Only through this research are we able to discover the cause-effect relationships that can help us to understand the best means to rehabilitate our marine mammal patients. \n\n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nwww.pacificmmc.org/beach-cleanups\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

The world’s fastest light-based fencing\, is happening every Wednesday Night @ Mike’s Bike Shop- 5507 West Pico Blvd\, at Beverlywil Dr\, Century City. @ 7:30pm to 9:30pm. \nCONTACT TONY FOR THE LATEST INFORMATION\,\n\nContact Tony for the latest information. www.facebook.com/tony.zaldua \n  \n\n\n\nLearn to Fight like a Jedi Knight- BEGIN YOUR TRAINING HERE!\nStep by step instructions for individuals \nwww.LightSpeed-Saber.Com/get-started \nwww.twitch.tv/lightspeedsaber \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhile you don’t have to do everything in this guide\, it’s a good way to begin\, especially if there is already an existing team near you. (Please note that\, due to COVID-19\, teams are in various states of operation at this time.) \n  \n\n\n\n\nSTEP 1 – CONNECT TO US\n\n\n\n\n\nWe do different things in different places around the web\, from our Instagram to our YouTube channel\, where you’ll find the Lightspeed Saber Rogue Series\, to our TikTok where you can enjoy short snippets from the show! But the place to talk to us is our international Facebook group. \n  \n \nSTEP 2 – CONNECT TO OTHERS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFind individuals or teams near you! \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSTEP 3 – GET A SABER\nYou don’t technically need an actual LED saber to start learning but it helps to familiarize yourself early. We recommend the Rey-class for your first Lightspeed Saber. Check the weapon class page for regulations to make sure the hilt you purchase is Lightspeed legal. \nNote that you do not need a Lightspeed blade to start practicing moves. You only need one once you begin competing. The standard blade that comes with your purchase should be fine for the time being. \n  \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSTEP 4 – LEARN BASIC MOVES AND CONCEPTS\nWe have tons of free information available for Lightspeed Saber fencing. But if you’re practicing alone\, you may want to learn our sequences. This is a growing library of technical exercises that help you fine tune your technique without a partner. You can do this on your own and evaluate yourself\, or you can enroll in our program\, where we’ll evaluate you to make sure you’re doing everything right. You can even get certified to evaluate others. \n  \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSTEP 5 – GET EQUIPMENT\nTo do Lightspeed Saber fencing you need to be properly equipped. This activity is dangerous. Make sure that you have everything listed on this page. And don’t forget about a mouth and nose covering to protect yourself and others from spreading disease. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSTEP 6 – LEARN AND PRACTICE BASIC SPARRING TECHNIQUES & STRATEGY\nOur YouTube channel is probably the best source of information for practical Lightspeed Saber fencing. Look for our instructionals and commentaries. \n  \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSTEP 7 – LEARN THE RULES OF COMPETITIVE LIGHTSPEED SABER\nLearn the rules of Lightspeed Saber fencing so you’re ready for your first official duel. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\nSTEP 8 – COMPETE!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRemember\, practice is practice and competition is practice. The breakdown is simple: to lose weight\, you need to sustain a calorie deficit diet. \nYou might be squirming at the “D” word\, and it’s understandable—healthy dieting is where most people struggle in their quest to lose weight. It is a 501(c)(3) corporation and has a volunteer Board of Directors\, who are nominated and elected by the membership at large. The Peninsula Neighborhood Association derives its effectiveness and strength from the diversity\, vitality and commitment of its membership\, as it pursues its goal of preserving the Peninsula’s unique quality of life in an ever-changing environment. \nNOW YOU CAN JOIN/RENEW MEMBERSHIP ONLINE HERE \nor \nDownload Membership Form. \n\nPENINSULA NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION\nThe Peninsula Neighborhood Association is a neighborhood organization open to all Peninsula residents\, whether property owners or renters\, for a per person annual fee of $25.00. It has a volunteer Board of Directors who are nominated and elected by the members of the Peninsula Neighborhood Association each November. \nThe Peninsula Neighborhood Association was incorporated in 1960 to oppose a plan by the City to replace the bayside beach with a sea wall\, as exists in Naples\, for private boat docks (thus the name Peninsula Neighborhood Association). Since winning that battle\, the Peninsula Neighborhood Association has been actively involved in preserving the Peninsula’s quality of life through sponsoring local events and activities\, as well as representing Peninsula residents before the City on matters that could affect our neighborhood. \nMISSION STATEMENT:\nTo protect and preserve the beaches along the Long Beach Peninsula for public usage and to ensure these beaches\nand community be maintained at the highest residential and recreational standards. \nHISTORY\nOne of the first structures on the Peninsula was an isolated duck hunting club located at the bayside end of what is now 61st Place. The club was established at the turn of the 19th to the 20th century. The first summer beach homes\, primarily owned by residents of Los Angeles and Pasadena\, were built in 1902-04. Owners of these summer homes were able to reach the Peninsula by means of an interurban electric train that ran from Los Angeles to Newport Beach. The train ran down the center of Ocean Boulevard the length of the Peninsula and then across a trestle connecting the east end of the Peninsula to Seal Beach. \n“The Pavilion\,” which at various times during its history served as an expensive restaurant and roller skating rink\, was established around 1910-12 at the oceanside end of 62nd Place\, which was then called Pier Avenue. Pier Avenue undoubtedly got its name from the pier that extended out into the ocean from The Pavilion. The Pavilion and its pier burned down a few years before a massive hurricane swept across the Peninsula in 1939\, destroying or causing significant damage to most structures throughout the Peninsula. \nThe Seaside Walk Boardwalk\, which was built in the ’20s\, is considered by residents to be a historical treasure. Attempts to replace it with concrete have been strongly opposed by Peninsula residents over the years and\, in the 1980s\, money was raised by residents to provide new surface boards (the City replaced the boards again in 2003). \nThe Peninsula has grown to encompass its current mix of single-family homes\, duplexes\, condominiums\, and apartments. Residents are a diverse group of families\, singles\, and senior citizens who have been residents for decades. The Peninsula continues to evolve\, while at the same time retaining its unique environment and lifestyle. \n\n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nlbpeninsula.org/summer-concert-series\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

DESCRIPTION:TONIGHT- The Hammer Museum\nThe Hammer Museum and the UCLA Film & Television Archive present a free screening of \n\nSummer Night Cinema: “Three Thousand Years of Longing”\nTUE AUG 23\, 7:30 PM\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTuesdays this summer\, make a night of it at the Hammer with after hours gallery access\, drinks and bar bites at Lulu\, and free film screenings. Galleries will be open until the films begin at 7:30 p.m. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nSummer Night Cinema is presented by Carla Emil and Rich Silverstein.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\nSCREENING: “THREE THOUSAND YEARS OF LONGING”\n\nDr Alithea Binnie (Tilda Swinton) is an academic—content with life and a creature of reason. While in Istanbul attending a conference\, she happens to encounter a Djinn (Idris Elba) who offers her three wishes in exchange for his freedom. This presents two problems. First\, she doubts that he is real and\, second\, because she is a scholar of story and mythology she knows all the cautionary tales of wishes gone wrong. The Djinn pleads his case by telling her fantastical stories of his past. Eventually she is beguiled and makes a wish that surprises them both. \n(2022\, dir. George Miller\, DCP\, color\, 108 min.) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nATTENDING THIS PROGRAM?\nRead the Hammer’s full COVID-19 safety guidelines.\nTicketing: Admission is free. From the earliest silent films requiring variable speed projection all the way up to cutting-edge digital cinema\, the Wilder can accommodate an array of screen technologies. \n \nThe theater’s modern design by Michael Maltzan Architecture stylishly interprets cinema’s play of light and movement in real space\, and the 285-seat interior features comfortable leather seats with superb sightlines. The theater is made possible by a generous gift from Audrey L. Wilder and named in honor of Mrs. Wilder’s late husband\, the legendary screenwriter\, director and producer. Born on the outskirts of the Austro-Hungarian empire\, Billy Wilder fled Nazi Germany in the 1930s to become a master of Hollywood film language and a shrewd comic observer of the American scene. Among the many classics Wilder co-wrote and directed were Double Indemnity (1944)\, Sunset Boulevard (1950) and Some Like It Hot (1959). \n\nPlease note that food is not permitted inside the theater. There are dining options in the surrounding Westwood Village. You may also opt to bring your own food and eat in the courtyard just outside the theater. \n \n\nThe Hammer Museum champions the art and artists who challenge us to see the world in a new light\, to experience the unexpected\, to ignite our imaginations\, and inspire change. \nThe Hammer understands that art not only has the power to transport us through aesthetic experience but can also provide significant insight into some of the most pressing cultural\, political\, and social questions of our time. We share the unique and invaluable perspectives that artists have on the world around us. \nA vibrant intellectual and creative nexus\, the Hammer is fueled by dynamic exhibitions and programs—including lectures\, symposia\, film series\, readings\, and musical performances—that spark meaningful encounters with art and ideas. \nAnd through our unwavering commitment to free admission and free public programs\, the Hammer Museum is open for all and FREE FOR GOOD.\n  \nHours\nMonday: Closed\nTuesday – Sunday: 11:00am – 6:00pm \n\nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nhttps://www.cinema.ucla.edu/calendar\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Thanks to this crazy new bar in Winnetka\, CA and our buddy the bartender\, we were introduced to new styles of beer that were much different than the commercial brands we were used to. After many conversations on the process of making beer and the brewing techniques of smaller breweries\, we decided to take a chance at brewing our own malted\, adult beverages! We signed up for a Maltose Falcons class\, bought a brewing kit and a turkey fryer and made a batch of beer on June 23\, 2012. After this first batch\, we were hooked! We invested more time in learning about the process\, fabricated custom brewing equipment and experimented with new recipes while tweaking them to make them our own. After serving samples of our homemade brews and getting positive feedback\, we began talking of doing it legit and opening up a brewery!  Given our Valley roots and the fact our beer was brewed out of a garage in Sylmar\, CA\, we decided 818 Brewing was the perfect name and we filed our paperwork in October 2014 for our new venture. \nWhat we’ve enjoyed the most along our journey is the sense of community within the craft brew scene. Not many products can bring people together of different nationalities\, age groups\, religious beliefs\, income levels\, political views – and even fellow brewers! – And create a moment of common ground.  8 one 8 Brewing is proud to offer a product that brings us together to say cheers! \n\n\nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \neventbrite.com/e/brewery-bike-ride\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

SUMMARY:Buffalo Soldiers in CA
DESCRIPTION:NOW ON EXHIBIT- CAAM\, Expositions Park\nWitness as California African American Museum opens exhibit on “For Race and Country: Buffalo Soldiers in California”\, on display until October 30. \nBuffalo Soldiers have been mythologized in movies\, television programs\, and popular songs. Despite this romanticism\, the history of Buffalo Soldiers is complex\, and their stories are relevant and worthy of deeper understanding. \nFor Race and Country: Buffalo Soldiers in California explores the surprising history surrounding all-Black US Army regiments whose members—both in and out of uniform—left powerful traces in the Golden State. Venturing beyond myths\, the exhibition confronts the role of Black soldiers in the Army’s history of violence against Native American people\, explores historical debates in the Black community over participation in wars\, and exposes cracks in a society permeated by racism\, in which African American soldiers faced the searing conflict between commitment to equality for their people and to the country they chose to serve. Such is the “double life” African Americans live\, in the words of scholar W.E.B. Du Bois\, including in the armed forces. \nThrough artifacts\, audio interviews\, photographs\, historical records\, period uniforms\, newspapers\, musical scores\, and media representations\, the exhibition presents a sweeping narrative of Black soldiers and their families who made California home during the era of government-sanctioned racial segregation in the US military. For Race and Country highlights Californians\, from Northern California to the Mexican border\, whose little-known influence transformed the state\, and the nation. \nFor Race and Country: Buffalo Soldiers in California is curated by Susan D. Anderson\, history curator\, with consultant Anthony J. Powell and researcher Caroline Collins. \nCAAM recently interviewed Susan D. Anderson and Anthony Powell about this exhibition: \n\n\n600 State Drive\, Exposition Park\, Los Angeles\, California 90037 \nFREE! TUES – SUNDAY- Exposition Park\nThe California African American Museum (CAAM) focuses on enrichment and education on the cultural heritage and history of African Americans with a focus on California and western United States. \n \nAdmission is free to all visitors. The California African American Museum’s mission is to research\, collect\, preserve\, and interpret for public enrichment the history\, art\, and culture of African Americans with an emphasis on California and the western United States. \n \nCAAM’s permanent collection consists of over 4\,000 objects ranging from the 1800s to the present. It encompasses paintings\, photographs\, film\, sculpture\, historical documents\, and artifacts\, and it spans nineteenth-century landscape paintings to modern artworks to contemporary mixed-media reflections on cultural and political events. \n \nThe Museum’s first acquisitions included a bronze bust of civil rights activist Dr. Mary Mcleod Bethune by artist Richmond Barthé and a sculpture by artist Maren Hassinger\, then at the start of her career. These laid the perfect groundwork for CAAM’s mandate to assemble a comprehensive\, thoughtful\, and wide-reaching collection. \nCAAM’s deepest holdings include art made or connected to African Americans in California and the western United States. However\, the Museum also has significant works of contemporary art from the African diaspora (including Haiti\, Brazil\, and Jamaica)\, as well as traditional African art from Western\, Central\, and Sub-Saharan Africa. CAAM aims to represent the diverse contributions of African Americans in the United States\, but also to interpret how the past has affected identity in the present. \n \nToday\, CAAM oversees\, exhibits\, and conserves a rapidly growing collection. Each quarter\, curators review the current holdings and decide as a committee on future acquisitions. We view our collection as a living body — constantly evolving\, growing\, and reflecting the world in which we live. \n \nSome examples of CAAM’s collection include the Walter Burrell Collection of audio recordings of Burrell’s interviews with African American celebrities\, broadcast by a local radio station in the early 1970s; the oral histories of Celes King\, who was both a local civil rights activist as well as a former Tuskegee airman; and selections from the collection of visual artist John Outterbridge. \n\nHours\nMonday: Closed\nTuesday – Saturday: 10:00am – 5:00pm\nSunday: 11:00am – 5:00pm \n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \ncaamuseum.org/exhibitions\n \n  \nFind more

SUMMARY:The Old LA Zoo
DESCRIPTION:OPEN EVERYDAY- Griffith Park\nThe Old LA Zoo\, or The Griffith Park Zoo\, opened in 1912 and closed in 1966 with the opening of the new\, Los Angeles Zoo. The abandoned site of the Griffith Park Zoo\, complete with the ruins of animal enclosures\, is now a picnic area and hiking trail in Griffith Park. \n  \n \nThe Old LA Zoo opened in 1912 with a grand total of only 15 animals. Bears\, Lions\, Monkeys\, Macaw’s\, Elephants\, Reptiles\, Goats\, and Turtles now lived in the zoo\, which was built on the original site of Griffith J. Griffith‘s defunct ostrich farm. \n  \n \nAs Los Angeles grew\, the small Griffith Park Zoo was increasingly criticized as an “inadequate\, ugly\, poorly designed despite drawing more than 2 million visitors a year. \nIn 1958\, the city decided to create a brand new zoo\, and the Griffith Park Zoo closed in August 1966. Its animals were transferred to the new Los Angeles Zoo 2 miles away\, which opened a few months later. \n  \n \nThe animal enclosures\, with the bars removed\, were left as ruins and remain today. A large picnic area was added\, and NOW every summer\, the zoo is the location for the Independent Shakespeare Company’s  Free “Shakespeare in the Park” performances. \nThe Old Zoo is located on Griffith Park Dr. Only 2 miles from today’s LA Zoo\,   \n  \n \nUpon arriving\, you will see a small parking lot. Follow the path Up the hill to reach the abandoned enclosure. \nUpon arriving\, you will enter many of the original Grotto’s. There are lots of little spaces to crawl into\, AND stairs to climb up. \n  \n \nFollow the path around to get to the upper lever where you will find even more cages & enclosures. \n \nIf you are going to come for a visit\, make sure to bring a bottle of water and your imagination. \n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nfriendsofgriffithpark.org\n \n  \nFind more

Sunset Blvd West Hollywood\, CA 90069 \nAs long as there has been a Los Angeles rock scene\, there has been the Whisky A Go-Go. An anchor on the Sunset Strip since its opening in 1964\, the Whisky A Go-Go has played host to rock ‘n’ roll’s most important bands\, from the Doors\, Janis Joplin\, and Led Zeppelin to today’s up-and-coming new artists. \n \nOn January 16\, 1964\, a small club on the Sunset Strip opened its doors for the first time.\n\nIt was The Whisky a Go Go\, the first-ever live music venue to be inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame and the most iconic club on the Strip. Founded by Mario Maglieri\, Elmer Valentine\, and Phil Tanzini – The Whisky had to spell its name without the ‘e’ in whiskey because Los Angeles city zoning laws didn’t allow any club to be named after alcohols (The Whisky constantly had problems with the city and for a while had the name “The Whisk?”). The world-famous Whisky a Go Go opened on Jan. 15\, 1964\, with a concert by Johnny Rivers. \nA DJ named Joanie Labine (the first DJ at The Whisky) played records in a booth that was suspended to the right of the stage in between Johnny Rivers’ sets. Labine entertained the crowd by dancing and the idea of the go-go dancer was born.
