After all\, the museum was originally designed to house his fine collection of old-master paintings and drawings\, as well as works on paper by Honoré Daumier and his 19th-century contemporaries. \n\n\n\n\n\nBut in the ensuing decades\, as the art world has continued to evolve\, so has Los Angeles — and so has the Hammer Museum\, which is now a part of the UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture. In 1994\, UCLA assumed management and operations of the museum\, and the Hammer kept its original purpose but also expanded its mission. Today\, the Hammer has a wide reputation for innovation and for showcasing new artists. \n  \n\nNew Contemporary Gallery\n\n  \n“L.A. has become a hotbed of contemporary art and artists\,” says Ann Philbin\, the museum’s director since 1999\, “and the Hammer has become a premier institution where they are shown.” \n  \n\n\n4th-Floor-Offices\n\n  \nUnder Philbin’s leadership\, the museum has expanded its collections and programs\, including establishing the Hammer Projects series of exhibitions and installations featuring local\, national and international emerging artists. It also launched the Made in L.A. biennial\, now in its fourth edition. Through these and other innovations\, the Hammer has quadrupled its attendance to about 250\,000 a year. \n  \nLindbrook Terrace\n  \nMeanwhile\, Occidental Petroleum\, which occupied the adjoining building\, relocated to Houston\, Texas. So the Hammer has begun a major\, multiyear expansion that will take the museum far into the 21st century. \nEarlier this year\, the Hammer announced a $180 million capital campaign. Almost half of those funds will be used to expand gallery and other public spaces\, while the rest will go toward exhibitions\, programming and an endowment. The museum has already raised more than $130 million\, including $30 million from L.A. philanthropists Lynda and Stewart ’59\, J.D. ’62 Resnick and $20 million from Hammer board chair Marcy Carsey. \n  \n  \nAnnex\n  \nThe renovations and additions being designed by Michael Maltzan Architecture\, who was commissioned in 2000 to create the museum’s 2003 master plan\, include: \n• A newly designed entrance at Wilshire and Westwood boulevards to maximize the museum’s visual presence at one of the nation’s busiest intersections. In the coming years\, the museum will also benefit from a planned Metro Purple Line station across Wilshire. \n• More than 10\,000 square feet of additional exhibition space for contemporary art. \n• New permanent collection galleries and a study room for the Grunwald Center Collection. \n• 20\,000 square feet of enhanced public spaces\, including a new restaurant. \n• A new and more accessible Hammer Store. \n  \n  \n2nd Floor B Side\n  \nIn all\, the expansion will provide 60 percent more gallery space for exhibitions. The museum will remain open during construction\, and admission will continue to be free. “We’re accessible to everyone\, and that keeps people coming back\,” Philbin says. “L.A. has been growing as one of the world’s most exciting cultural creative communities\, and the museum has grown alongside it.” \n  \n\n  \nBookstore\nHISTORY OF THE HAMMER MUSEUM\nThe Hammer Museum opened to the public in November 1990. Founded by Dr. Armand Hammer\, former Chairman of Occidental Petroleum Corporation\, the Museum was designed by architect Edward Larrabee Barnes. Financed by Occidental\, the Museum was built adjacent to the Corporation’s international headquarters in Westwood. At that time\, the Museum featured galleries for Dr. Hammer’s collections — old master paintings and drawings\, and a collection of works on paper by Honore Daumier and his contemporaries — as well as galleries for traveling exhibitions. Dr. Hammer passed away in December 1990\, three weeks after the opening of the Museum leaving many spaces unfinished. \nIn 1992\, the Museum began negotiations with its neighbor\, University of California\, Los Angeles (UCLA)\, to assume the management and operations of the institution. In April 1994\, the partnership with UCLA was finalized and the following year the University relocated its collections and the staff of the Wight Art Gallery and the Grunwald Center for the Graphic Arts to the Hammer. The Museum also assumed responsibility for the Franklin D. Murphy Sculpture Garden\, located at the north end of the UCLA campus. \nHenry Hopkins\, then director of the Wight gallery and professor in the Department of Art\, became director of the Museum until his retirement in 1998. In 1999 Ann Philbin was named director and has developed a strong and original institutional identity and built a national and international reputation for thematic contemporary exhibitions\, scholarly historical exhibitions\, and contemporary artists’ projects. During her tenure the Hammer has formed a Hammer Contemporary Collection which now holds over 2\,000 artworks. In addition\, Philbin has overseen substantial renovations to the museum’s building\, including the completion of the 300-seat Billy Wilder Theater and museum café. With Philbin’s direction\, the museum instituted the internationally acclaimed Hammer Projects\, a series of more than one hundred contemporary exhibitions and installations featuring local\, national\, and international emerging artists. For many Angelenos\, the name evokes a panorama of memories—from picnics\, hikes\, horses\, and softball games to the zoo\, observatory\, trains\, and\, of course\, the Autry. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nBut how much do you really know about Griffith Park? How did it come to be\, and what are its best-kept secrets? Join us as we explore stories about Griffith Park\, a landscape that we honor as Tongva/Gabrielino land and a public park for Los Angeles. \n  \n \n  \nTo celebrate Griffith Park’s 125th anniversary in 2021\, the Autry\, has opened a community-led exhibition. The Autry’s newest exhibition\, Investigating Griffith Park\, a hands-on space that invites visitors to share their stories\, experiences\, and input on what the anniversary celebration should include. \n \n  \nOne section of the current gallery asks\, “What is the park to you?” and invites visitors to write responses. The museum says that while the public’s notes may influence the final exhibition\, they’re also helping the museum plan future questions\, focus group topics\, and talk-back sessions with partner organizations. \n \n\n\n\nWhile the Autry designed the gallery as a way to gather feedback from the public\, it’s also a great introduction to what the park offers. Visitors will find historical artifacts and photos\, video clips of Griffith Park’s many movie appearances\, a kids’ play area\, and an oversized board game about P-22\, the beloved mountain lion. \nEven the area of the park where the Autry is located has a fascinating history. In addition to the upcoming anniversary exhibition\, the Autry’s long-term plan includes building a research archive around Griffith Park in order to make it easier for people to study the park and to spur further research. \n  \n\n\n\n\nTimeline:\nCurrently open in its first phase of development\, we welcome your feedback as we further transform one of the Autry’s core galleries into an experiential\, hands-on space. DESCRIPTION:FREE WEEKDAYS- UCLA Westwood Village\nThe UCLA Collection of Meteorites is the largest on the West Coast and contains over 2500 samples from about 1500 different meteorites. It is the fifth largest collection of meteorites in the United States and the second largest housed at a university. \n  \n \nOur collection includes the main masses of about 40 meteorites and the type specimens of more than 300 meteorites collected from hot deserts; 60 of these are iron meteorites. Eighty of these meteorite type specimens are from the state of California. These were collected by local citizens during the past few decades\, mainly from the playas (dry lakes) scattered around the Mojave Desert. \n  \n \nSome of our meteorites are large and well suited for exhibits (in fact\, some of them are exhibited at the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History). However\, most of the samples are small and mainly of value for research. \n  \n  \n \nThe study of meteorites and the processes that formed them is called cosmochemistry. The cosmochemists at UCLA are among the most productive university researchers in the world. It is thus appropriate that we have one of the best university meteorite collections. \n  \nWe are in the second year of operating a Meteorite Gallery\, located in room 3697 of the Geology Building. Opened in January 2014\, the Gallery is open to the public weekdays from 9 am to 4 pm. CLOSED WEEKENDS. Admission is always free. The current exhibits will gradually expand as funds and additional samples are obtained. Since winning that battle\, the Peninsula Neighborhood Association has been actively involved in preserving the Peninsula’s quality of life through sponsoring local events and activities\, as well as representing Peninsula residents before the City on matters that could affect our neighborhood. \nMISSION STATEMENT:\nTo protect and preserve the beaches along the Long Beach Peninsula for public usage and to ensure these beaches\nand community be maintained at the highest residential and recreational standards. \nHISTORY\nOne of the first structures on the Peninsula was an isolated duck hunting club located at the bayside end of what is now 61st Place. The club was established at the turn of the 19th to the 20th century. The first summer beach homes\, primarily owned by residents of Los Angeles and Pasadena\, were built in 1902-04. Owners of these summer homes were able to reach the Peninsula by means of an interurban electric train that ran from Los Angeles to Newport Beach. The train ran down the center of Ocean Boulevard the length of the Peninsula and then across a trestle connecting the east end of the Peninsula to Seal Beach. \n“The Pavilion\,” which at various times during its history served as an expensive restaurant and roller skating rink\, was established around 1910-12 at the oceanside end of 62nd Place\, which was then called Pier Avenue. Pier Avenue undoubtedly got its name from the pier that extended out into the ocean from The Pavilion. The Pavilion and its pier burned down a few years before a massive hurricane swept across the Peninsula in 1939\, destroying or causing significant damage to most structures throughout the Peninsula. \nThe Seaside Walk Boardwalk\, which was built in the ’20s\, is considered by residents to be a historical treasure. Attempts to replace it with concrete have been strongly opposed by Peninsula residents over the years and\, in the 1980s\, money was raised by residents to provide new surface boards (the City replaced the boards again in 2003). \nThe Peninsula has grown to encompass its current mix of single-family homes\, duplexes\, condominiums\, and apartments. Residents are a diverse group of families\, singles\, and senior citizens who have been residents for decades. They are: \nYou can purchase your ticket from the dock attendants stationed at each WaterBus stop. These attendants can also assist with any questions on WaterBus service and provide additional information on a wide range of activities in Marina del Rey. \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\nHours of Operation\n\n\n\nFridays: 2:00 pm to 10:00 pm \nSaturdays: 12:00 pm to 10:00 pm \nSundays: 12:00 pm to 9:00 pm \n4th of July: 12:00 pm to 8:00 pm \nLabor Day: 12:00 pm to 8:00 pm \nThe current schedule is set to start on June 17 and run through September 5\, 2022. \nPlease make sure to check this website for any schedule changes or additions. \nThe WaterBus operates non-stop while underway. Due to this\, there are no set scheduled boarding times at each individual stop. Dock attendants at each dock location can provide estimates on arrival of the next available WaterBus. \n\n\n\n\nTicket Info\n\n\n\nTickets are available at each dock location only. The ticket price is $1.00 for passage one way. Tickets may be purchased by CASH ONLY. Season passes are also available for $30.00 per pass and are available for sale at any of the stops. All season passes are non-transferable and photo identification will be required for use. All ticket sales and season pass sales are final and non-refundable. \n\n\n\n\n\nFARE: \n$1.00 per person\, one way\n\n\n \n\nNO SMOKING OR PETS \n\n\n\n\n\nDISABLED ACCESS \nTo accommodate our disabled community\, ADA accessible ramps are located at Burton Chace Park\, Wetlands Park\, Del Rey Landing\, Marina “Mother’s” Beach\, Dolphin Marina\, and Esprit 1. This includes increased social distancing guidelines as well as other on board measures to ensure the safety of all guests and crew while cruising.\n\n  \nAre there boarding changes due to Covid-19? \n\nYes – masks are required for all guests and crew.\nSocial distancing regulations apply in lines and while onboard.\n\n  \nWhat do I need to know to have a safe WaterBus ride? \n\nPlease listen to the WaterBus Dock Attendant and WaterBus Captain and follow all instructions given. There will be live cultural dance and entertainment\, artisans\, boutiques\, community booths\, a food court\, dragon boat races\, a children’s area\, and an eco-friendly area. \nShare a memorable and meaningful evening with your family and friends at the Lights of Dreams Lantern Event! Come decorate your own unique lantern and launch it among the thousands of water lanterns at Echo Park Lake. Illuminated water lanterns symbolize our hope for a brighter future\, appreciation for our loved ones\, and memories of those who passed away; while lotuses represent rebirth\, purity\, and life. Through our event\, we hope to create an incredible experience that brings families and friends together to celebrate the meaning of life and spread hope\, peace\, and dreams. \n \n  \nThis event is featured on both Saturday\, July 9\, 2022\, and Sunday\, July 10\, 2022. Attendees who pre-register on Eventbrite can directly pick up their lantern kit at our booth. Each lantern kit includes one lantern (i.e. water floating paper lantern or water floating lotus lantern)\, a wristband to access the lantern launching site\, and markers for decoration. At dusk\, the lakeside launching ceremony will commence. Thousands of water lanterns will be released into Echo Park Lake\, creating an illuminating array of beauty and inspiration. After the event\, all lanterns will be cleaned up and recycled to restore our peaceful and serene lake. Proceeds from this event will be donated to non-profit organizations\, such as Los Angeles Lotus Festival Inc.\, that promote the arts and cultures of Asian Pacific Islanders. \nLights of Dreams is one of the main attractions at the 41st annual LA Lotus Festival\, which celebrates the people and culture of India! This year is a very special year in India’s history. They are celebrating their 75th Independence Day in 2022. Also\, India’s national flower is the lotus flower\, which is one of the highlights of our festival. Enjoy a fun day in Echo Park with live music and performances\, indulge in delicious foods\, and shop at our vendor booths. Immerse yourself in the sea of blossoming lotus flowers and cheer on the dragon boat races!
