SUMMARY:UCLA Meteorite Collection
DESCRIPTION:FREE WEEKDAYS- UCLA Westwood Village\nThe UCLA Collection of Meteorites is the largest on the West Coast and contains over 2500 samples from about 1500 different meteorites. It is the fifth largest collection of meteorites in the United States and the second largest housed at a university. \n  \n \nOur collection includes the main masses of about 40 meteorites and the type specimens of more than 300 meteorites collected from hot deserts; 60 of these are iron meteorites. Eighty of these meteorite type specimens are from the state of California. These were collected by local citizens during the past few decades\, mainly from the playas (dry lakes) scattered around the Mojave Desert. \n  \n \nSome of our meteorites are large and well suited for exhibits (in fact\, some of them are exhibited at the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History). However\, most of the samples are small and mainly of value for research. \n  \n  \n \nThe study of meteorites and the processes that formed them is called cosmochemistry. The cosmochemists at UCLA are among the most productive university researchers in the world. It is thus appropriate that we have one of the best university meteorite collections. \n  \nWe are in the second year of operating a Meteorite Gallery\, located in room 3697 of the Geology Building. Opened in January 2014\, the Gallery is open to the public weekdays from 9 am to 4 pm. CLOSED WEEKENDS. Admission is always free. The current exhibits will gradually expand as funds and additional samples are obtained. With spectacular views\, splash pad\, playground\, gallery\, Marion Davies Guest House\, beach courts & fields\, community & cultural events\, historic pool\, free wi-fi\, and more\, there’s something for everyone to enjoy! \n  \n \nSPLASH PAD\nThe Splash Pad is a water feature that shoots water out of the ground and is very popular with small children.\nThe courtyard and splash pad will open daily May – October\, 9am-4pm. \n  \n \nChildren’s Playground\nThere is a children’s playground featuring swings\, climbing play-sets\, and of course a sandy area to play. There are benches\, chairs\, and tables for adults to sit while the kids play.  \n\n\nBeach Soccer & Volleyball Courts\nYou may reserve beach soccer or volleyball courts 4 weeks in advance for $10/hour during the summer pool season. Beach court and field reservations are intended for individual or small party use only. Reservations are not required for court or field use. Courts without reservations are available on a first-come first-served basis for free. Since winning that battle\, the Peninsula Neighborhood Association has been actively involved in preserving the Peninsula’s quality of life through sponsoring local events and activities\, as well as representing Peninsula residents before the City on matters that could affect our neighborhood. \nMISSION STATEMENT:\nTo protect and preserve the beaches along the Long Beach Peninsula for public usage and to ensure these beaches\nand community be maintained at the highest residential and recreational standards. \nHISTORY\nOne of the first structures on the Peninsula was an isolated duck hunting club located at the bayside end of what is now 61st Place. The club was established at the turn of the 19th to the 20th century. The first summer beach homes\, primarily owned by residents of Los Angeles and Pasadena\, were built in 1902-04. Owners of these summer homes were able to reach the Peninsula by means of an interurban electric train that ran from Los Angeles to Newport Beach. The train ran down the center of Ocean Boulevard the length of the Peninsula and then across a trestle connecting the east end of the Peninsula to Seal Beach. \n“The Pavilion\,” which at various times during its history served as an expensive restaurant and roller skating rink\, was established around 1910-12 at the oceanside end of 62nd Place\, which was then called Pier Avenue. Pier Avenue undoubtedly got its name from the pier that extended out into the ocean from The Pavilion. The Pavilion and its pier burned down a few years before a massive hurricane swept across the Peninsula in 1939\, destroying or causing significant damage to most structures throughout the Peninsula. \nThe Seaside Walk Boardwalk\, which was built in the ’20s\, is considered by residents to be a historical treasure. Attempts to replace it with concrete have been strongly opposed by Peninsula residents over the years and\, in the 1980s\, money was raised by residents to provide new surface boards (the City replaced the boards again in 2003). \nThe Peninsula has grown to encompass its current mix of single-family homes\, duplexes\, condominiums\, and apartments. Residents are a diverse group of families\, singles\, and senior citizens who have been residents for decades. Come decorate your own unique lantern and launch it among the thousands of water lanterns at Echo Park Lake. There’s no starting point or finish line—begin where you like and enjoy the day your way.\nCicLAvia traffic flows in two directions\, just like regular traffic. The constant in the group’s vision is a cultivation of changing aesthetics using the mindfulness of hip-hop natives\, making historical reappraisals through contemporary lenses\, and filtering both via the dignity of local community values. The reason Standing on the Corner has developed a seemingly wide cast of admirers—from underground jazz experimentalists and popular musicians\, to gallerists and curators—is the group’s clear illustration of these connections as a constant ingredient in the continuum of African Diasporic music. There will be live cultural dance and entertainment\, artisans\, boutiques\, community booths\, a food court\, dragon boat races\, a children’s area\, and an eco-friendly area. \nShare a memorable and meaningful evening with your family and friends at the Lights of Dreams Lantern Event! Come decorate your own unique lantern and launch it among the thousands of water lanterns at Echo Park Lake. Illuminated water lanterns symbolize our hope for a brighter future\, appreciation for our loved ones\, and memories of those who passed away; while lotuses represent rebirth\, purity\, and life. Through our event\, we hope to create an incredible experience that brings families and friends together to celebrate the meaning of life and spread hope\, peace\, and dreams. \n \n  \nThis event is featured on both Saturday\, July 9\, 2022\, and Sunday\, July 10\, 2022. Attendees who pre-register on Eventbrite can directly pick up their lantern kit at our booth. Each lantern kit includes one lantern (i.e. water floating paper lantern or water floating lotus lantern)\, a wristband to access the lantern launching site\, and markers for decoration. At dusk\, the lakeside launching ceremony will commence. Thousands of water lanterns will be released into Echo Park Lake\, creating an illuminating array of beauty and inspiration. After the event\, all lanterns will be cleaned up and recycled to restore our peaceful and serene lake. Proceeds from this event will be donated to non-profit organizations\, such as Los Angeles Lotus Festival Inc.\, that promote the arts and cultures of Asian Pacific Islanders. \nLights of Dreams is one of the main attractions at the 41st annual LA Lotus Festival\, which celebrates the people and culture of India! This year is a very special year in India’s history. They are celebrating their 75th Independence Day in 2022. Also\, India’s national flower is the lotus flower\, which is one of the highlights of our festival. Enjoy a fun day in Echo Park with live music and performances\, indulge in delicious foods\, and shop at our vendor booths. Immerse yourself in the sea of blossoming lotus flowers and cheer on the dragon boat races! Additionally\, children can explore rock climbing\, arts and crafts\, and more. \n \nSchedule for Lights of Dreams Lantern Event: \n1. Registration and lantern decorations: 12 – 6:30 pm \n2. All water lanterns are illuminated by LED lights which are energy efficient and reusable. The City of Beverly Hills offers free trolley service between Civic Center and Rodeo Drive every Saturday and Sunday between 11 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.\, except holidays*. And every First Thursdays” Evenings.  Additional trolley service days are added during summer and winter. This is not a narrated tour. Masks are required onboard the trolley regardless of vaccination status. \n  \n \nDepartures from Civic Center Trolley Stop: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.\, every hour. The Civic Center Trolley Stop is located on the southeast corner of Civic Center Drive and Third Street. On Sundays\, the Civic Center Trolley Stop is located in front of the Beverly Hills Courthouse at 9355 Burton Way. \nDepartures from Rodeo/Dayton Trolley Stop: 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.\, every half hour.  The Rodeo/Dayton Trolley Stop is located on the southeast corner of Rodeo Drive and Dayton Way (adjacent to Two Rodeo shopping plaza). \nCLICK HERE to view the trolley stops map and schedule.
