DESCRIPTION:TRAILS & TIDE POOLING in Palos Verdes\nAbalone Cove Shoreline Park is a coastal tide pool treasure\, located at the tip of the Palos Verdes Peninsula. The park contains an ecological preserve and is famous for its outstanding tide pools. \nIt is worth checking tide charts to visit these beaches at low tide for the tide pools and the tunnels. \nDAILY TIDE CHARTS HERE\n  \n \nOut at the end and right at the base of the points there are amazing rock tunnels where waves rush in and crash through. \n  \nTrails meander on the bluff out to excellent views from two prominent points. Below these points are three separate coves with beaches and tide pools. \nAbalone Cove Park features 2 beaches (Abalone Cove and Sacred Cove)\, tide pools\, bluff top viewing areas and trails crisscrossing the area. The park contains a State Ecological Preserve and taking of protected animals and marine life is prohibited. There is direct access to a parking lot off Palos Verdes Drive South. Access to Abalone Cove Beach is by a long trail from the parking lot. To access Sacred Cove\, users must walk along Palos Verdes Drive South to 1 of 2 trails between Portuguese and Inspiration Points. Lifeguards are on duty at Abalone Cove Beach during summer hours and weekends only. The views of the ocean and Catalina Island are spectacular. Barbeques and fires are prohibited at this site. Meet at the East Trailhead Kenneth Hahn State Recreation Area to check-in and meet your Hike Leader! \n  \n \n9 AM: YOGA \nMeet at the 9/11 Memorial Tree at the Bluff (nearby the Burke Roche picnic area/Restrooms) \nThe yoga is fun and BEGINNER-friendly! \nFrequently Asked Questions\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHow does this work? \nMeet at 8am at the East Trailhead of Kenneth Hahn State Recreation Area\, which is at Don Lorenzo and La Brea. \nIf you intend on meeting for the hike\, route your car to “Don Lorenzo and La Brea.” There is street parking and other park lots nearby. You will need to cross the street and take the steps up to the East Trailhead map sign. \n​ \nUpon arrival\, each participant signs the liability form and the roster. \nYou will have the choice to join a Hike Leader to have a “respectful-distanced” mindful hike experience\, or you may take a self-guided hike. Your Hike Leader will hold space for introductions and mindful pauses during your hike towards the yoga location. Be prepared to say your name\, where you reside\, and your take on the theme of the week. Enter here\, take the road all the way up\, and park by the Burke Roche picnic area/restrooms if you want to ONLY join the 9am yoga. \n​ \nWhat kind of trail will the group hike?\nThere are many trails up to the yoga location but we plan to have Hike Leaders for our Signature moderate\, nature-full trail with inclines and declines. The trail will take us to up to the Bluff where there are restrooms and water fountains. This 2021 Season we will be debuting the Hummingbird trail (Park to Playa trail + Bowl loop)\, which is more flat and takes you through a beautiful hummingbird garden. Both hikes will be about 40-45 minutes. \n​ \nWhat if I only want to do the yoga class\, what is the easiest way to get to yoga at 9 am? \nYou can pay $7 cash for parking\, enter at the La Cienega entrance\, and park right by the Burke Roche picnic area/restrooms. Walk about 2 minutes down the Bluff to the 9/11 Memorial Tree. \n​ \nWho will be teaching the yoga classes? Will the classes be beginner-friendly? \nWe have an awesome team of Hike to Yoga LA Yoga Teachers\, including Hike to Yoga LA Founder\, Laurie\, who enjoys teaching her signature Yoga Wave Circle!\nOur teacher team is diverse in age and body-type\, and are ready to inspire you with community\, nature and of course\, yoga!\nYoga class is 60 minutes long\, starts promptly at 9 am. Please be on time as it is distracting to join when class has already started. \n​ \nWhat should I bring?\nYour yoga mat\, yoga towel\, beach towel\, or just do yoga on the earth! (Might be wet from morning dew!) DESCRIPTION:EVERY DAY ’til MIDNIGHT- Dockweiler State Beach\nThe Dockweiler Beach Fire Pits are located about 3 miles south of Playa del Rey\, this inviting beach features 3 miles of shoreline\, an RV park\, and over 2\,000 regular vehicle parking spaces. The wide sandy beach lies beneath the departures flight path of LAX\, offering fantastic belly views of airlines headed out over the Pacific. The lot entrance is at Vista del Mar and Imperial Highway. \n\n\nFIRE PITS RULES\n\n\n\n\n\nAny grills or BBQs must fit inside the fire pit\, which is 2′ wide. No grills\, grilling\, or flames or fires on the sand.\nTo use the fire pits\, you bring your own charcoal or wood and a way to light them.\nPlease do not use sand to put out the fire.\nHelp keep our beaches clean by preventing ashes or debris from falling into the sand.\n\n  \n\n\n\nThere’s no better way to end a fun day at the beach than to circle up around a cozy bonfire. Not all California beaches allow bonfires\, but here in the Marina del Rey area\, we’re lucky that Dockweiler State Beach does permit regulated burns in provided fire rings. Follow these tips to ensure your group has an enjoyable time. \n\nIf you want a pit\, arrive early. From May through September\, the pits are in high demand\, especially on the weekends\, and there are some diehards who arrive at dawn to claim their spots for the entire day. You cannot reserve fire pits as you would a campsite. Do not leave your pit unattended\, even for a quick dip in the ocean – if you do\, don’t be surprised to find another group has taken over the site. There are between 60 – 80 fire pits located just north and south of where Vista del Mar intersects with Imperial Highway. That sounds like a lot\, but consider that Dockweiler is also home to an RV park\, and you’re all competing for space.\nBring everything you need – wood\, s’mores\, snacks\, et cetera (see “Your Packing List” below).\nThe beach and all amenities close at midnight.\nBefore you leave\, snuff out the flame with water. Stir the embers after they are covered with water and make sure that everything is saturated. Do not use sand to distinguish the fire\, as it creates a mess for the next guest.\n\n \nYOUR PACKING LIST\n\nWood and charcoal (wood for that nice bonfire and charcoal for cooking – see below about barbecue rules). Both can be purchased at Ralph’s grocery stores: 4700 Admiralty Way\, Marina del Rey; 8701 Lincoln Boulevard\, Playa del Rey. Only burn clean wood (nothing treated with paint\, chemicals\, etc.) in the pits.\nFire starter and a lighter. You can purchase kindling from most any grocery\, home supply\, or sporting-goods store. Or\, prepare your own starter with this old-school camping craft: Fill a cardboard egg carton with dryer lint\, wood shavings\, paper shreds\, or other ignitable materials. Pour a small amount of melted candle wax into each cup to make things stay put. Break off cups individually and place into your wood stack. Light the cardboard cups and watch how easy your fire takes off – even in the wind.\nIf barbecuing\, note that large stand-up barbeques are NOT allowed on the sand or in the parking lots. However\, you can bring a low-profile version and place it inside the fire ring.\nLong-handle grilling sticks. These are great for cooking hot dogs and kabobs and roasting marshmallows.\nHot glove or mitt. Don’t ruin your night with a burn from handling hot wood\, pots\, or grills. Items like the Ove Glove offer protection while still allowing dexterity.\nFood! Doubt you’ll forget this\, but you may want a separate checklist so that you remember all the elements for your meal. It’s easy to overlook things like serving spoons\, plastic utensils\, salt and pepper\, napkins or wet wipes\, and containers for leftovers. Paper plates are great for cookouts since they’re ok to burn in the fire afterward.\nCamp/beach table. Depending on the size of your group\, you may prefer to set up your dinner fixings buffet style on a simple folding table. Whatever you bring\, remember that you’ll need to carry it across the sand to the pit and back to the parking lot at the end of your evening. So only take what you really need.\nYou’ll want a beverage cooler with ice\, especially if you heed our warning and arrive early in the day to claim your spot. A bag to hold discarded recyclables is a good idea\, too.\nComfort items. Ask each person in your group to bring his or her own beach chair or picnic blanket. DESCRIPTION:KIDS UNDER 12 FREE- Long Beach\nThe Long Beach Museum of Art (LBMA) was founded in 1950 as a municipal art center for the city of Long Beach. Since its inception\, the Museum has been housed in the historic 1911 Elizabeth Milbank Anderson House. In 1957\, the Anderson House was designated as the Long Beach Museum of Art\, at which time the Museum began acquiring a permanent collection.\nIn 1977\, the Museum was honored with accreditation by the American Association of Museums\, which it has since maintained. Since 1986\, the Long Beach Museum of Art Foundation has managed the Museum\, governed by a Board of Trustees. In 2000\, the Museum completed a restoration of the historic residence and constructed a new two-story exhibition pavilion (in 2015 the pavilion was renamed the Hartman Pavilion). Since then\, the Museum has offered diverse and compelling exhibitions\, which has resulted in increased visitors and program attendance. \n  \n \nThe Museum’s permanent collection is diverse with more than 3\,200 works encompassing 300 years of American and European art in all media. Highlights from the collection include furniture by Charles and Ray Eames\, ceramics by Beatrice Wood\, and sculptures by Claire Falkenstein\, George Rickney and Peter Voulokos; Early 20th Century European Modernist paintings by Vasily Kandinsky\, Alexej Jawlensky and others from the Milton Wichner Collection; and contemporary artists such as James Jean\, Sherrie Wolf\, and Sandow Birk whose paintings have recently been added to the collection. \nSince 1951\, exhibitions presented by the Museum have been varied with shows ranging from individual artists to specific types of art. DESCRIPTION:KIDS UNDER 12 FREE- Long Beach\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJawlensky and Kandinsky: The Milton Wichner Collection\nThrough October 2\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe most significant gift in the Museum’s history was a generous bequest of collector Milton Wichner in 1979. Wichner’s gift of 61 works by European Modernists changed the course of the Museum’s future\, expanding the collection from one of regional-focus\, to one enhanced by international perspectives. Wichner moved to Los Angeles from the East coast upon completing his law degree from Harvard University in 1936. Between the film industry\, the oil boom \,and an influx of Europeans fleeing Nazi Germany\, Los Angeles saw a period of tremendous growth\, accompanied by the convergence of different cultures and aesthetics. During this time\, Wichner met Galka Scheyer who represented a group of contemporary artists\, she named Blaue Vier (Blue Four): Alexej Jawlensky\, Vasily Kandinsky\, Lyonel Feininger\, and Paul Klee. This exhibition showcases the works of two of the Blue Four artists\, Alexej Jawlensky and Vasily Kandinsky\, curated from the Wichner Collection. The Milton Wichner Collection entrusted to the Museum\, lives on to perpetuate the memory of this benefactor\, and serve as a reflection of his passion and esteem for European abstraction. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGenie Shenk: Ring\nOngoing\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nConstructed of folded building paper with internal armature\, Ring began as a study of spiral motion between concentric circles in 1989. Genie Shenk became interested in the spiral as a means of increment from one circle to another and found this relationship could be defined three-dimensionally with the intersection of two isometric circular forms. As the inner circle diminishes\, the outer increases\, until a point of equilibrium is reached. \nGenie Shenk\, Ring\, 1990-1999\, Tar paper\, Gift of the artist  2009.13.a-et \n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n  \n\n\n2300 East Ocean Boulevard\, Long Beach\, CA 90803\n\n\n\nThe Long Beach Museum of Art (LBMA) was founded in 1950 as a municipal art center for the city of Long Beach. Since its inception\, the Museum has been housed in the historic 1911 Elizabeth Milbank Anderson House. In 1957\, the Anderson House was designated as the Long Beach Museum of Art\, at which time the Museum began acquiring a permanent collection.\nIn 1977\, the Museum was honored with accreditation by the American Association of Museums\, which it has since maintained. Since 1986\, the Long Beach Museum of Art Foundation has managed the Museum\, governed by a Board of Trustees. In 2000\, the Museum completed a restoration of the historic residence and constructed a new two-story exhibition pavilion (in 2015 the pavilion was renamed the Hartman Pavilion). Since then\, the Museum has offered diverse and compelling exhibitions\, which has resulted in increased visitors and program attendance. \n  \n \nThe Museum’s permanent collection is diverse with more than 3\,200 works encompassing 300 years of American and European art in all media. Highlights from the collection include furniture by Charles and Ray Eames\, ceramics by Beatrice Wood\, and sculptures by Claire Falkenstein\, George Rickney and Peter Voulokos; Early 20th Century European Modernist paintings by Vasily Kandinsky\, Alexej Jawlensky and others from the Milton Wichner Collection; and contemporary artists such as James Jean\, Sherrie Wolf\, and Sandow Birk whose paintings have recently been added to the collection. \nSince 1951\, exhibitions presented by the Museum have been varied with shows ranging from individual artists to specific types of art. Some of the notable highlights include: The Artful Teapot: 20th Century Expressions from the Kamm Collection; Architecture for Dogs; Frank E. Mindfulness Meditation is the moment-by-moment process of actively and openly observing one’s physical\, mental\, and emotional experiences. Mindfulness has scientific support as a means to reduce stress\, improve attention\, boost the immune system\, reduce emotional reactivity\, and promote a general sense of health and well-being. These half hour weekly sessions are open to all who are interested in learning how to live more presently in life. SUMMARY:Hike To The Hollywood Sign
DESCRIPTION:HIKING TO THE SIGN\nThe Hollywood Sign is the most famous icon of the city of Los Angeles\, and there are three routes below ranked from easy to difficult. The Mt Hollywood Trail\, The Brush Canyon Trail\, and The Cahuenga Peak Trail (currently closed)\n\nStunning views of the Hollywood Sign unfold at your own pace on hiking trails that meander through the rolling chaparral of the Santa Monica Mountains.  Trails originally blazed by paws\, hooves\, and yucca-thatched moccasins now connect us to cultural as well as natural wonders. The western frontier of Griffith Park offers hikers amazingly close encounters with the Sign\, which is off-limits to human hands\, just below the ridgeline at the 1\,708-foot summit of Mt. Lee. On the longest hike\, you can ascend above and behind the Sign’s 45-foot-tall aluminum letters\, where you look out over a windswept vista encompassing the DOOWYLLOH sign\, the dreamy towers of downtown Los Angeles\, and\, on a clear day\, the ageless blue Pacific.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFrom behind\, the Sign reads DOOWYLLOH\nAuthorized hiking trails are open the same hours as Griffith Park\, from Sunrise to Sunset\, 365 days a year.  While enjoying hiking\, please stay on authorized trails. \nPlease beware of the extreme fire danger on the trails\, parts of which are still recovering after a devastating wildfire in 2007. Trespassing is illegal. A LAPD officer is stationed near the Sign\, which is protected by a fence and security cameras 24 hours a day. Thank you. \n \nEasy Way:\nThe Mt. Hollywood Trail\, \noffering a mind-bending side-angle view of the Sign\, has two starting points in Griffith Park\, the 6.5 square miles of protected wilderness AKA the heart and lungs of Los Angeles (Hours: Sunrise – Sunset). The shorter loop hike of about three miles starts at Griffith Observatory’s parking lot\, which is free and fills up early on weekends. \nA slightly longer and steeper trail with fewer people starts on a fire road intersecting N. Vermont Canyon Rd.\, just past the Greek Theater\, where hardy hikers find plenty of street parking. \n\n \nThe Charlie Turner Trailhead marker \n\nThe most popular route up Mt. Hollywood\, the second highest peak in the park\, is suitable for families with children. It begins at the Charlie Turner Trailhead\, named to honor a longtime park volunteer. You can use the restrooms at the Observatory and ask a park ranger about conditions on the trail. Summer can be scorching up there\, so be sure and carry plenty of water. Sandals and flip-flops are not the best footwear in snake country. The trailhead sign and landscaping are at the north end of the Observatory parking lot. The hike begins with a short\, easy ascent along a ridge. \nLook for the Mt. Hollywood trailhead sign and landscaping at the north end of the Observatory parking lot. The hike (where leashed dogs are legal but unleashed ones common) isn’t likely to cross paths with P-22\, the mountain lion that traversed two freeways to take up residence in the wilds of Griffith Park in 2012. Start walking up a short\, easy ascent along a ridge through authentic wild chaparral where you may spot purple and orange wildflowers in the spring and red Toyon berries on California Holly bushes in the fall. In less than a half- mile\, you come upon a cooling grove of pine trees called the Berlin Forest\, planted by real Berliners to honor their sister-city status with Los Angeles. There are tables and benches\, and a beautiful view of the Hollywood Sign framed by pine boughs. Be on the lookout year-round for Zorro-masked Mountain Chickadees in the conifers and orange and yellow flame-headed Western Tanagers in the scrub. \n\nThe entrance to Dante’s View\nAfter another gently up-sloped half-mile\, you reach a four-way crossroads. The left fork goes around the west side of Mt. Hollywood toward a rest stop called Captain’s Roost. The right fork leads around the east side to a well-kept “folk” garden called Dante’s View. The Friends of Griffith Park have recently been planting and nurturing more native plants around the rest stop gardens\, which were severely burned in 2007. Both provide shade (there’s also a water fountain at Dante’s View) and restorative views of the Observatory and the city to the south and the Hollywood Sign to the west. The 1\,625-foot Mt. Hollywood summit is about one-quarter mile beyond both stops and consists of a coastal sage scrubby knob with protective railing. The slightly cockeyed view of the letters in the Hollywood Sign is from a perspective just a few degrees off dead center\, and almost directly at eye level. READ MORE \n\n \n\nMODERATE:\nThe Brush Canyon Trail\, \nalso part of Griffith Park\, features a fun side trip to Adam West’s Bat Cave\, home of the Batmobile in the 60’s Batman TV series. Locals know it as Bronson Caves\, and there’s a small parking lot close to the trailhead on Canyon Drive and an overflow dirt parking lot just down the road. The trail offers sensational views of the city and ends behind the Hollywood Sign. The old rock quarry tunnel has figured in many movies\, from 1925’s Riders of the Purple Sage to 2010’s Megashark vs. Crocosaurus. \n\n \nA view from the Brush Canyon Trail. hike \n\nThe 6.5-mile trail to the Sign climbs more than a thousand feet through several healthy ecosystems\, so hikers need to give it three hours and carry plenty of water. If there aren’t too many unleashed dogs\, you might see mule deer\, bobcats\, coyotes\, and rattlesnakes. Look up for Cooper’s Hawks soaring in the thermals over the Sign and down for honeybees probing the wildflowers. READ MORE \nNOTE: Reservations are NOT currently required on this hike. However\, access might be closed off during the day depending on overcrowding. \n \nDIFFICULT:CLOSED\nThe Cahuenga Peak Hike\,\nacross a short saddle from Mt. Lee\, runs through the latest 138-acre addition to Griffith Park and offers wide angle views of the Hollywood Reservoir and the San Fernando Valley. Suitable for the more experienced hiker\, it begins on the Aileen Getty Ridge Trail and includes the Hugh Hefner Overlook\, both named for two of the many benefactors and community activists who raised the money to save the land from a luxury housing development in 2012. \n \nThe trail is more rugged and less defined than the Canyon Blvd. trail. It includes the famous Wisdom Tree and traverses an area where the park’s resident mountain lion\, P-22\, has been spotted (usually after dark when the park is closed). A fantastic group of artists & dancers who work with LED Hula Hoops and other LED apparatus they can spin\, toss\, throw in the air\, etc. \n\n Very friendly and talented peeps.  \n \nCelebrating our love of  the FLOW at Glow Flow Santa Monica!\n\n\n\n\nHow to Capture the Glow Flow Moment\nIf spin isn’t your thing\, how about photography. Here are different ways to shoot Glow Flow Santa Monica. \nGOLDEN HOUR / BLUE HOUR\nYou can shoot available light for images of the artists. \nSLOW SHUTTER SPEED\nAs Glow Flow gets dark\, you can use a slow shutter speed to let the moving LED devices draw amazing “spirograph” shapes with light against the night sky. \nSLOW SYNC\nYou can combine both elements with slow sync or rear sync. A long shutter speed captures traces from LED Hula Hoops and then your on-or-off-camera flash lights the artist. \nTHE BEST FLASH?\nI haven’t had the best results with built-in pop-up flash. I like using an external flash in the hot-shoe. At Glow Flow\, We often say that having flash off the hot-shoe produces better lighting. For me\, in this case\, I think there’s so much going on\, that hot-shoe mounted flash works well. You could bring a light stand and battery powered strobe which might look great but seems like a lot of gear. \nTRIPOD?\nIf you use flash\, it will freeze the artist\, and the point-light-sources of the LEDs effectively freeze themselves\, so you can shoot this handheld. However\, you will get crisper images if you use a tripod. \nBRACKET\, BRACKET\, BRACKET!\nAs you can imagine\, dialing in your exposure can be a bit complicated! Plan to try a variety of different shutter speeds to see what works with the LEDs. DESCRIPTION:TRAILS & TIDE POOLING in Palos Verdes\nAbalone Cove Shoreline Park is a coastal tide pool treasure\, located at the tip of the Palos Verdes Peninsula. The park contains an ecological preserve and is famous for its outstanding tide pools. \nIt is worth checking tide charts to visit these beaches at low tide for the tide pools and the tunnels. \nDAILY TIDE CHARTS HERE\n  \n \nOut at the end and right at the base of the points there are amazing rock tunnels where waves rush in and crash through. \n  \nTrails meander on the bluff out to excellent views from two prominent points. Below these points are three separate coves with beaches and tide pools. \nAbalone Cove Park features 2 beaches (Abalone Cove and Sacred Cove)\, tide pools\, bluff top viewing areas and trails crisscrossing the area. The park contains a State Ecological Preserve and taking of protected animals and marine life is prohibited. There is direct access to a parking lot off Palos Verdes Drive South. Access to Abalone Cove Beach is by a long trail from the parking lot. To access Sacred Cove\, users must walk along Palos Verdes Drive South to 1 of 2 trails between Portuguese and Inspiration Points. Lifeguards are on duty at Abalone Cove Beach during summer hours and weekends only. The views of the ocean and Catalina Island are spectacular. Barbeques and fires are prohibited at this site.
