We feel lucky to be woven into the founding fabric that makes this city shine and steal hearts—inspiring people from all over the world to come\, see\, explore\, and discover. SUMMARY:The Abbey West Hollywood
DESCRIPTION:THE WORLD’S GREATEST GAY BAR – West Hollywood\nCome and join your friends at The Abbey\, welcoming you to a weekend of Pride celebrations! Sip on delicious cocktails\, dance the night away to our great music selection\, and enjoy a special Pride menu. Celebrating PRIDE is all about having a great time with friends and family! \n \nAfter nearly three decades in the business — an achievement in any industry but a unicorn-level rarity in the dining and nightlife scene — The Abbey is more than a dance club or restaurant. It’s a community center\, albeit one with sexy\, barely clad dancers\, 10-oz apple martinis\, and magical memories. \nThe weekly calendar includes Brunch Service on Saturdays\, All That ’90s on Tuesdays\, Ash WeHo\, Kink Thursdays\, and Sinful Fridays. The most popular day remains Sunday Funday when locals start showing up for brunch. By mid-afternoon\, there’s a line snaking down the block that’d make you think it’s on Saturday night. \nOn a typical weekday at The Abbey\, you’ll see parents with baby strollers coming from the park next door and guys in tank tops after a workout. That segues into the lunch crowd\, which eventually becomes the happy hour and dinner crowd. Around 9 p.m.\, the dancers — both guys and girls — come out. \nTHE ABBEY PRIDE WEEKEND\n \n\nTHE OWNER\n \nDavid Cooley\, hailing from Ohio and armed with a degree in Hotel Management from the University of Nevada\, Las Vegas\, packed up and moved out to Los Angeles in 1981. Pursuing a new career in finance\, Cooley was a stockbroker for two years before becoming a vice president at Wells Fargo Bank. \nShortly thereafter in 1991\, Cooley set out on his own and invested in a small\, discreet space in West Hollywood that he renovated into a coffeehouse called The Abbey.  After nearly twenty-five years and five expansions\, The Abbey is more than 14\,000 square feet and known as the Best Gay Bar in the World\, having won the award twice from Logo. \n \n  \n\nHours\nMonday – Friday: 11:00am – 2:00am\nSaturday – Sunday: 10:00am – 2:00am \n\n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nwww.theabbeyweho.com/weeklyevents\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

SUMMARY:Los Angeles Maritime Museum
DESCRIPTION:WEDNESDAY TO SUNDAY – San Pedro\nDiscover the history of the Port of Los Angeles on land or at sea! Welcome to the Los Angeles Maritime Museum where our hardworking harbor tug ANGELS GATE provides educational tours while our historic museum building houses fascinating exhibits\, a research library\, a ham radio station\, and a gift shop. \nOPEN EVERY WEDNESDAY TO SUNDAY FROM 12:00 pm TO 5:00 pm\nFREE TO CHILDREN AGES 12 AND UNDER\n\n\n\nBerth 84\, Foot of 6th St.\, San Pedro\, CA 90731 \nThe Los Angeles Maritime Museum is housed in the former Municipal Ferry Terminal building\, located on the main channel of the Los Angeles Harbor. It was designed in the Streamline Moderne style by architect Derwood Lydell Irvin of the Los Angeles Harbor Department. It was built in 1941 at Berth 84\, by the Works Project Administration (WPA). \nThe ferry between San Pedro and Terminal Island ceased after the Vincent Thomas Bridge was opened to traffic in 1963. The building was then used for offices of the LA Harbor Department. The San Pedro Municipal Ferry Building is now a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. \nThe Los Angeles Maritime Museum opened in 1979 as a result of widespread community efforts to save the historic building. It is the largest maritime museum on the West Coast. The museum’s interior renovation was designed by Modernist architect James Pulliam. The museum is operated by the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks. \n\nEXHIBITS\nANGELS GATE TUGBOAT\n \nThe tugboat ANGELS GATE arrived at the Museum in 1992\, after almost 50 years of providing general towing services and goodwill tours for the Port of Los Angeles. \nTĀMINARU\n \nIn the early 20th century\, Terminal Island (in the Port of Los Angeles) was home to approximately 3\,000 Japanese-Americans who earned their livelihood from catching and cleaning fish. Residents of this community\, known as “Terminal Islanders” were originally from the Wakayama Prefecture\, Japan\, and retained their language and customs after emigrating to Los Angeles harbor. \nTāminaru is a look back at this lost community. The exhibit is guest curated by author Naomi Hirahara\, organized by Tara Fansler\, and sponsored by the Friends of the Los Angeles Maritime Museum and the Japan Business Association with the assistance of the Terminal Islanders Club. \nPOSEIDON MODEL\n \nThere is a movie star on the second floor! The model of the SS POSEIDON was the original prop in the 1972 classic film “The Poseidon Adventure”. \nFifteen men built the model over a period of three months. POSEIDON is 21 .5 feet long and weighs one ton. The builders relied on the plans of the RMS QUEEN MARY\, now permanently docked as an attraction in Long Beach\, California. \nNAVY HALL\n \nThe Museum building\, built-in 1941\, was originally used as a ferry terminal\, transporting people and automobiles between San Pedro and Terminal Island. The area of the first floor where cars would enter and exit is now used as the Navy Hall. \nANGELS GATE LIGHT\n \nThe Angels Gate Lighthouse (officially known as Los Angeles Harbor Light) has marked the entrance of Los Angeles Harbor through times of war and peace\, and even survived a tidal wave! The tower itself has undergone many changes through the years. The distinctive green flash of the Angels Gate Lighthouse remains a welcoming beacon to professional mariners and recreational boaters alike. \nKIDS EXHIBIT\n \nKids of all ages will discover what’s going on in the harbor today through a series of interactive games and activities in the children’s exhibit. Grab a pair of binoculars and take a close-up look at the nation’s busiest container port! Learn how cranes work\, imagine yourself in a variety of harbor professions\, build your own wharves\, test your knowledge of ships and cargo\, or just settle down and enjoy a nautical story!\nDue to Covid-19-related precautions\, the toys and costumes have been temporarily removed. \nCAUGHT\, CANNED\, AND EATEN\n \nThe Port of Los Angeles (San Pedro) was the fishing capital of the nation for much of the twentieth century. Generations of fishermen sold catches of tuna\, sardines\, mackerel\, and squid to fish markets or canneries on nearby Terminal Island. \nToday\, the fishing fleet is greatly diminished and the canneries have closed\, but the legacy of the fishing and canning industries endures. \nCOMMERCIAL DIVING\n \n  \nThis exhibit is an introduction to just a few of the thousands of jobs performed by commercial divers and fishery divers in the South Bay\, and was the inspiration of the late Torrance R. Parker\, noted commercial diver and author of 20\,000 Jobs Under the Sea. \nSCHOOL TOURS\nThe museum is pleased to offer educational tours throughout the year at no charge. \nThe museum is located on the Main Channel of Los Angeles Harbor. Students will have a front-row opportunity to see the massive container ships in action and learn about international trade\, ship terminology\, sailor’s art\, and the history of the working people who built Los Angeles harbor into the nation’s busiest container port. \nTours are free for grades K-12\, Wednesday –Friday mornings\, and reservations are REQUIRED. The museum is unable to accommodate group tours without a reservation. \nCall the tour hotline at 310-548-2900 and schedule your tour today\, or email info@lamaritimemuseum.org. \nRESEARCH\nThe Los Angeles Maritime Museum Research Library is home to thousands of books\, historic photographs and archival documents waiting for you to discover! \nResearch questions can be directed to info@lamaritimemuseum.org and 310-548-7618 ext. 215. \nPortions of our collection have online finding aids and digital records: \nOnline Archive of California (OAC) \nOnline Digital Collections \n\nSuggested Donation:\nAdults $5\nSeniors (62+) $3\nChildren 12 & under FREE\nHours\nMonday-Tuesday: Closed\nWednesday – Sunday: 12:00pm – 5:00pm \n\nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nwww.lamaritimemuseum.org\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n  \n

Tea in the Museum’s Tula Tea Room may be prepared for your group upon request. \nPlease note that visits to the Museum are entirely self-guided\, and we do not customarily offer tours. \nTo arrange your visit\, please write to brin@mjt.org\, or leave a message at (310) 836-6131 \n\n \n9341 Venice Boulevard\, Culver City\, California 90232 \nThe public museum as understood today is a collection of specimens and other objects of interest to the scholar\, the man of science\, and the more casual visitor\, arranged and displayed in accordance with the scientific method. In its original sense\, the term “museum” meant a spot dedicated to the muses – “a place where man’s mind could attain a mood of aloofness above everyday affairs.” By far the most important museum of antiquity was the great institution at Alexandria founded by Ptolemy Philadelphus in the third century before Christ\, (an endeavor supported by a grant from the treasury). And no treatment of the museum would be complete without mention of Noah’s Ark in which we find the complete Museum of Natural History the world has ever seen. \nThe Museum of Jurassic Technology traces its origins to this period when many of the essential collections of today were beginning to take form. Many exhibits which we today have come to know as part of the Museum were\, in fact\, formally part of other less well-known collections and were subsequently consolidated into the single collection which we have come to know as The Museum of Jurassic Technology and thus configured\, received great public acclaim as well as much discussion in scholastic circles. \n\nHours\nMonday – Wednesday: Closed\nThursday – Friday : 2:00pm – 8:00pm\nSaturday – Sunday: 12:00pm – 6:00pm \n\n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nwww.mjt.org\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

SUMMARY:FREE FAMILY NIGHT
DESCRIPTION:FIRST FRIDAY OF THE MONTH in Pasadena\nThe first Tuesday of every month from 4:00 to 8:00pm is Kids Space Museum Free Family Night.  Admission to the Museum is FREE for everyone during these hours only. Families can engage with special programming and performers that highlight cultures and traditions from around the world. Expect crowds and long admission lines during the spring and summer months. \n \nThe Mission & History of Kids Space Children’s Museum\nThe mission of this foundation is to nurture the potential of all children through driven experiences\, inspiring them to become joyful\, active learners.\n\n\n\nTo help us achieve this\, we work by the following core values: \n\nRespect—We respect our guests by asking their opinions and listening. We also respect our guests and embrace diversity.\nIntegrity—We do what we said we will do even when it is not the easy thing to do. We want to be transparent with our finances so our investors know how they are making a difference.\nSafety—The safety of our guests comes first. We have a safe environment where young minds of all ages can explore\, learn\, and have fun.\nExperiential Learning—Education is the core of who we are. We believe that when learning becomes fun\, the learner does so willingly.\n\n\nThe Purpose of a Kids Space Children’s Museum\nAn incredible seed bed of learning and discovery\, the purpose of a children’s museum is to inspire children to learn and grow\, equip parents and teachers\, and to be a safe place where learners of all abilities can do so at their own pace and focus on topics of interest to them. This is often referred to as “Free Range Learning.” What makes us different from a school is our approach to informal education. We believe in giving our guests hands-on experiences that are relevant and inspiring. \nIn Dr. Howard Gardner’s book\, Intelligence Reframed: Multiple Intelligences for the 21st Century\, he points out the value of children’s museums in helping a child discover their learning style. Kidspace provides a learning environment filled with the wonder and joy of the natural world. \nA definition from the Association of Children’s Museums: \nKIDS SPACE MUSEUM is a nonprofit institution that provides children with hands-on learning experiences and interactive activities\, because children learn through exploration and play. The first children’s museum\, called the Brooklyn Children’s Museum\, was founded in the year 1899. SUMMARY:Classic Car Show at Bob's
DESCRIPTION:EVERY FRIDAY- in Burbank\nThe Classic Car Show at Bob’s Big Boy\, has been a tradition in Burbank for years. A buzzy retro scene begins to unfold as enthusiasts cruise in looking for prime spots where the tower sign’s red neon might reflect off their freshly polished hoods. Weekly cars shows are a slice of Americana\, but no place does them quite like Bob’s Big Boy®\, where the food is hot and the cars are hotter. \n\n\nClassic Car Show at Bob’s Big Boy\nThe Classic Car Show at Bob’s Big Boy is presented by Downtown Burbank Partnership\, a non-profit organization. The event is an exciting showcase for custom\, celebrity\, exotics\, and classic cars\, and motorcycles. \nThese automotive masterpieces will stretch along San Fernando Boulevard and adjacent streets in Downtown Burbank’s outdoor shopping-dining and entertainment district. \nPeople say\, “It’s American Grafitti come to life.” Big-block Chevy’s. Hot Rod Lincolns. Leave the Hybrid at home. Happy days are here again thanks to Bob’s Big Boy® and the Road Kings of Burbank. Weekly cars shows are a slice of Americana\, but no place does them quite like Bob’s Big Boy®\, where the food is hot and the cars are hotter. \n\nYou will see Vintage Classics\nBrian Wilson\, the genius behind the Beach Boys\, showed up to take in the little deuce coupes he used to sing about. And Jay Leno\, well he’s more than just a regular. \nIn tune with Downtown Burbank’s location in the heart of the entertainment industry\, vehicles with a “Hollywood” twist are especially welcome — such as those appearing in film or television\, or having a distinguished history of celebrity ownership. \nEvery Friday from 4-10pm\, Bob’s Big Boy® Burbank hosts Southern California’s best antique car show. Come see why we’ve become the center of the car-crazed universe. Included will be family entertainment\, music\, vendor-booths and prizes. \nThe event will happen rain or shine. \n\n\n  \nFind more information @ \nhttps://bobs.net\n \nFind more

SUMMARY:Hammer Museum Free Screening: BEAU TRAVAIL
DESCRIPTION:THIS FRIDAY- The Hammer Museum\nThe Hammer Museum presents a free screening of  \n\n\n\nBEAU TRAVAIL\n\nFrance\, 1999 \nFrench Foreign Legion sergeant Galoup (Leos Carax regular Denis Lavant) violently fumbles with the quandary of fading glory in Claire Denis’ masterful fifth feature\, set in the Horn of Africa in the peacetime Republic of Djibouti. Like the rusting relics of this country’s militarized past\, the chinks in Galoup’s armor begin to show as he struggles to maintain authority over his troops\, including oft-Agnès Godard-lensed Grégoire Colin (see him also in Nénette et Boni\, 35 rhums and La vie rêvée des anges in this series) with the quiet desperation of a man newly drained of significance. As the lithe legionnaires run military drills\, their perspiring bodies receive reverent lensing thanks to Godard\, who has collaborated with filmmaker Denis for two decades. With simple stretching sessions blocked with geometric\, Busby Berkeley-like precision\, underwater sequences that flirt with the ghost of Esther Williams and pulsing nighttime discotheques\, Beau travail looks back at its French New Wave predecessors while tipping its beret to neoclassical ballet traditions for a singular piece of elliptical\, formally abstracted cinema. \nDCP\, color\, in French\, Italian and Russian with English subtitles\, 92 min. Director: Claire Denis. Screenwriters: Claire Denis\, Jean-Pol Fargeau. Based on the novella by Herman Melville\, Billy Budd\, Sailor. Cinematographer: Agnès Godard. Editor: Nelly Quettier. With: Denis Lavant\, Michel Subor\, Grégoire Colin\, Richard Courcet\, Nicolas Duvauchelle. \n\n\n\n\n\nJACQUOT DE NANTES\n\nFrance\, 1991 \nAgnès Varda’s tender evocation of the childhood of her husband\, Jacques Demy—a dream project of his that she realized when he became too ill to direct the film himself—is a wonder-filled portrait of the artist as a young man and an enchanting ode to the magic of cinema. Shot in Demy’s hometown of Nantes (including the house he grew up in)\, this imaginative blend of narrative and documentary traces his coming of age amid the tumult of World War II as he finds escape in a universe of puppet shows\, fairy tales\, opera\, and\, above all\, movies—the formative aesthetic experiences that would fuel his vivid Technicolor imagination and find unforgettable expression in his exuberant French New Wave masterworks. Interspersed with intimate footage of the older Demy reflecting on his life’s journey\, Jacquot de Nantes is a poignant love letter from one visionary artist to another.—Janus Films \nDCP\, b&w and color\, in French with English subtitles\, 118 min. Director/Screenwriter: Agnès Varda. Cinematographers: Patrick Blossier\, Agnès Godard\, Georges Strouvé. Editor: Marie-Josée Audiard. With: Philippe Maron\, Edouard Joubeaud\, Laurent Monnier\, Brigitte De Villepoix\, Daniel Dublet. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nATTENDING THIS PROGRAM?\nTicketing: Admission to Archive screenings at the Hammer is free. Registration is required via the Film & Television Archive website\, and tickets must be picked up at the box office. Hammer members receive priority ticketing until 15 minutes before showtime. Please review the Archive’s ticketing policy and COVID-19 admission policy. Questions should be directed to the Archive at programming@cinema.ucla.edu or 310-206-8013.\nParking: Parking is available under the museum. Rates are $7 for the first three hours with museum validation\, and $3 for each additional 20 minutes\, with a $20 daily maximum. There is a $7 flat rate after 6 p.m. on weekdays\, and all day on weekends. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Hammer Museum champions the art and artists who challenge us to see the world in a new light\, to experience the unexpected\, to ignite our imaginations\, and inspire change. \nThe Hammer understands that art not only has the power to transport us through aesthetic experience but can also provide significant insight into some of the most pressing cultural\, political\, and social questions of our time. We share the unique and invaluable perspectives that artists have on the world around us. \nA vibrant intellectual and creative nexus\, the Hammer is fueled by dynamic exhibitions and programs—including lectures\, symposia\, film series\, readings\, and musical performances—that spark meaningful encounters with art and ideas. \nAnd through our unwavering commitment to free admission and free public programs\, the Hammer Museum is open for all and FREE FOR GOOD.\n  \nHours\nMonday: Closed\nTuesday – Sunday: 11:00am – 6:00pm \n\nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nhttps://hammer.ucla.edu/\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:AMIR’S GARDEN
DESCRIPTION:OPEN YEAR ROUND- Griffith Park\nThe Trail to Amir’s Garden is a 1.1 mile heavily trafficked loop trail located LA’s Griffith Park. This shady rest stop and memorial garden features beautiful wild flowers and water-bearing\, fire-resistive succulents interspersed with natives and memorial trees and plants. The trail is primarily used for hiking\, walking\, running\, nature trips\, and horses and is accessible year-round. It is rated as moderately difficult trail. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash. \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe gardens are cared for by official volunteers since its creation in 1971. Amir’s Garden is considered a rest stop and not a dedicated picnic area\, therefore it can’t be reserved for events. The nearest restrooms are located at Mineral Wells Picnic Area. Activities related to the care of a large garden may be taking place at any time\, including watering. Amir’s Garden is a most pleasant place for a hike-in picnic\, with a selection of picnic tables.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe History of Amir’s Garden\nAmir Dialameh worked a steep hill in Griffith Park for than three decades with a pick and shovel and turned a scorched\, barren landscape into a lush\, shaded grove that is visited daily by a steady stream of hikers and horseback riders. \nFor thirty-two years\, Dialameh worked in the garden most days of the week\, hiking up a service road to the rugged Mineral Wells location. Over the years\, he planted pine and jacaranda trees along with rose bushes\, geraniums\, oleander\, and yucca that grew into the beautiful oasis it is today. \n“…what you need first and foremost here is shade\,” Dialameh explained in 1989. “That’s why I planted trees like the jacaranda. In ten years\, this place will be covered with their branches.” \nHis words were prophetic. Today Amir’s Garden is nearly five-acres of shady rest stop for Griffith Park’s hikers and equestrians. \nDialameh first came to appreciate nature as a child during hiking trips in the Alborz Mountains of his native Iran. As his love of hiking and nature developed\, so did his affinity for the United States of America. \n“I was intrigued by the volunteerism that built this country… people doing things instead of relying on the government.” In 1963 while visiting his brother in Pittsburgh\, Dialameh made the ultimate decision to immigrate and moved to the Los Angeles area. \n\n\nGetting There\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe hike to Amir’s Garden actually begins near one of Griffith Park’s larger picnic areas\, Mineral Well Picnic Area. Find the dirt service road heading west from the intersection of Griffith Park Drive and Mineral Wells Road. \nWalk straight through an immediate junction and follow the dirt road on a southwestern climb to Amir’s Garden. After a horseshoe bend in the road\, and a quarter mile from the start\, you will pass a water tower that is accompanied by broad views stretching beyond Griffith Park toward Glendale\, the Verdugo Mountains\, and San Gabriel Mountains. \n \nLooking back down the trail\nAfter less than half a mile\, the trail arrives at Amir’s Garden where you’ll discover a pocket of tall sycamores arcing over a mountainside of verdant plants including succulents like ice plant and jade. There are a few picnic tables at the entrance of Amir’s Garden and others hidden throughout. \n  \n \nAmir’s Garden\n\nStroll through a web of footpaths and recharge your batteries in this refreshing Griffith Park retreat. With extra effort\, you may continue up North Trail toward Mount Hollywood\, Mount Bell and other peaks in Griffith Park. Otherwise\, return the way you came for a satisfying 1-mile round trip hike. No fee or permit is required to hike to Amir’s Garden and dogs are welcome.\n\nTo get to the trailhead: Take the 5 Freeway to the Los Feliz Boulevard exit. Drive west on Los Feliz Boulevard to the first light and turn north on Crystal Springs Road. After 1.5 miles\, turn left on Griffith Park Drive and drive 1.2 miles to the intersection with Mineral Wells Road. Turn left onto Mineral Wells Road and park immediately in the spaces along the road. The trail to Amir’s Garden heads west from the intersection of Mineral Wells Road and Griffith Park Drive. \nTrailhead address: Mineral Wells Road & Griffith Park Drive\, Griffith Park\, Los Angeles\, CA 90027 \n\n\n\n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nhttp://www.amirsgarden.org/\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
