Contact 310 376-9833 \n\n \n30 Pier Avenue\, Hermosa Beach\, CA 90254 \n \nA restaurant called “Verpilate’s” was built a short walk from the ocean at 30 Pier Avenue in 1934\, and it was converted into “The Lighthouse”\, a bar\, in 1940 (“Café” was added to the official name only when the business was sold in 1981). The club first began showcasing jazz music on May 29\, 1949\, when owner John Levine permitted bassist/band leader Howard Rumsey to start a recurring Sunday jam session on a trial basis. The experiment was a success. Rumsey became club manager soon after and put together a house band called the Lighthouse All-Stars. \nWhile the club also hosted visiting groups\, the Lighthouse All-Stars became a noted ensemble in its own right\, which had among its guest musicians Chet Baker\, Gerry Mulligan\, and Miles Davis. The longest-running members of the Lighthouse All-Stars were Bob Cooper (tenor saxophone)\, Conte Candoli (trumpet)\, and Stan Levey (drums). \n \nWest Coast jazz stalwarts Shorty Rogers\, Richie Kamuca\, Bill Holman\, Bud Shank\, Shelly Manne\, and Jimmy Giuffre were also regulars in the early days. Max Roach was the regular drummer for a while in 1953. The club also became an important venue for recordings; Art Pepper\, Lee Morgan\, Cannonball Adderley\, Mose Allison\, Ramsey Lewis\, Art Blakey\, Charles Earland\, Grant Green\, Elvin Jones\, Cal Tjader\, the Modern Jazz Quartet\, The Three Sounds\, the Jazz Crusaders\, and Joe Henderson all made recordings there. \n \n“The Lighthouse” sponsored an inter-collegiate jazz festival in the late-1950s\, and the competition’s winners included Mike Melvoin and Les McCann. \nJohn Levine died in 1970 and Rumsey left “The Lighthouse” in 1971 to open the “Concerts By The Sea” jazz club in nearby Redondo Beach. SUMMARY:UCLA Meteorite Collection
DESCRIPTION:FREE WEEKDAYS- UCLA Westwood Village\nThe UCLA Collection of Meteorites is the largest on the West Coast and contains over 2500 samples from about 1500 different meteorites. It is the fifth largest collection of meteorites in the United States and the second largest housed at a university. \n  \n \nOur collection includes the main masses of about 40 meteorites and the type specimens of more than 300 meteorites collected from hot deserts; 60 of these are iron meteorites. Eighty of these meteorite type specimens are from the state of California. These were collected by local citizens during the past few decades\, mainly from the playas (dry lakes) scattered around the Mojave Desert. \n  \n \nSome of our meteorites are large and well suited for exhibits (in fact\, some of them are exhibited at the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History). However\, most of the samples are small and mainly of value for research. \n  \n  \n \nThe study of meteorites and the processes that formed them is called cosmochemistry. The cosmochemists at UCLA are among the most productive university researchers in the world. It is thus appropriate that we have one of the best university meteorite collections. \n  \nWe are in the second year of operating a Meteorite Gallery\, located in room 3697 of the Geology Building. Opened in January 2014\, the Gallery is open to the public weekdays from 9 am to 4 pm. CLOSED WEEKENDS. Admission is always free. The current exhibits will gradually expand as funds and additional samples are obtained. Fusing Alice in Wonderland with the Duchampian tradition of the readymade\, Artist Robert Therrien constructs a doppelganger from an everyday object\, both displaying his visual wit and actualizing literary or imaginative fantasy in three-dimensional space. The table exudes an extraordinary aura\, compelling one to walk underneath the table and conjuring the physical memory of being under the table of one’s childhood home. Complicated and powerful\, the work offers fresh ideas of what a table\, sculpture\, and memory can mean. \n  \n  \n \nUsing the recognizable form of a balloon twisted into the shape of a dog\, Koons has frozen a moment in time\, exaggerating both scale and material. \nBalloon Dog (Blue) is literal and abstract. DESCRIPTION:OPEN EVERYDAY- Griffith Park\nThe Old LA Zoo\, or The Griffith Park Zoo\, opened in 1912 and closed in 1966 with the opening of the new\, Los Angeles Zoo. The abandoned site of the Griffith Park Zoo\, complete with the ruins of animal enclosures\, is now a picnic area and hiking trail in Griffith Park. \n  \n \nThe Old LA Zoo opened in 1912 with a grand total of only 15 animals. Bears\, Lions\, Monkeys\, Macaw’s\, Elephants\, Reptiles\, Goats\, and Turtles now lived in the zoo\, which was built on the original site of Griffith J. Griffith‘s defunct ostrich farm. \n  \n \nAs Los Angeles grew\, the small Griffith Park Zoo was increasingly criticized as an “inadequate\, ugly\, poorly designed despite drawing more than 2 million visitors a year.  \nIn 1958\, the city decided to create a brand new zoo\, and the Griffith Park Zoo closed in August 1966. Its animals were transferred to the new Los Angeles Zoo 2 miles away\, which opened a few months later. \n  \n \nThe animal enclosures\, with the bars removed\, were left as ruins and remain today. A large picnic area was added\, and NOW every summer\, the zoo is the location for the Independent Shakespeare Company’s  Free “Shakespeare in the Park” performances. \nThe Old Zoo is located on Griffith Park Dr. Only 2 miles from today’s LA Zoo\,   \n  \n \nUpon arriving\, you will see a small parking lot. Follow the path Up the hill to reach the abandoned enclosure.  \nUpon arriving\, you will enter many of the original Grotto’s. DESCRIPTION:EVERY SUNDAY – Los Angeles\nVisit The African American Firefighter Museum! The African American Firefighter Museum is dedicated to promote diversity and to stand up for inequality against all races and genders. \nThe first floor contains vintage fire apparatus\, stories and pictures of pioneering African American Los Angeles Firefighters. The Museum gallery is located on the second floor with pictures\, artifacts and other memorabilia of African American Firefighters from around the country. \nOPEN EVERY SUNDAY FROM 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm\n \n\n\n1401 S Central Ave\, Los Angeles\, CA 90021 \n\nHISTORY\nThe AAFFM opened it’s doors as a Museum on December 13\, 1997. The dedication of the Museum also served as the acknowledgement of what was believed to be the city’s first 100 years of service by African American Firefighters (1897-1997). In 2002\, the Los Angeles Times contacted the AAFFM and stated they had discovered factual information to indicate the history started before 1897 with a man named Sam Haskins\, who was listed as the first Los Angeles Fireman of African decent when he was hired in 1892 and killed while responding to a fire in 1895. \nToday the Museum is open to the public and is strictly volunteer and donation driven. It is a 501 c(3) non-profit organization and it is available for use by organizations and individuals that desire to host events such as; meetings\, luncheons\, dinners\, banquets\, book signings\, film viewings\, jazz festivals\, social dances\, receptions and retreats. Our beloved historian\, 96 year old retired Firefighter Arnett Hartsfield\, who passed away in 2014 was our most cherished volunteer. As a Los Angeles Firefighter during the 1940s and 50’s he lead the integration of the Los Angeles Fire Department. As a graduate of USC law school\, he and his fellow firemen known as the Stentorians\, the NAACP and the local community were instrumental in successfully integrating the LAFD. DESCRIPTION:THURSDAY TO SUNDAY – Culver City\nThe Museum of Jurassic Technology in Los Angeles\, California is an educational institution dedicated to the advancement of knowledge and the public appreciation of the Lower Jurassic. \n \nTHE MUSEUM IS OPEN \nTHURSDAY AND FRIDAY FROM 2:00 pm TO 8:00 pm\nSATURDAY AND SUNDAY FROM 12:00 pm TO 6:00 pm\nThe Museum has instituted an online reservation and timed ticketing system to ensure the greatest possible safety and experience for our patrons. For the foreseeable future\, visits to the Museum must be booked in advance. \nIt is advised to arrive at least 15 min before your appointment time to allow for time to park and check in. When you arrive please have your confirmation email available for the front desk attendant. In its original sense\, the term “museum” meant a spot dedicated to the muses – “a place where man’s mind could attain a mood of aloofness above everyday affairs.” By far the most important museum of antiquity was the great institution at Alexandria founded by Ptolemy Philadelphus in the third century before Christ\, (an endeavor supported by a grant from the treasury). And no treatment of the museum would be complete without mention of Noah’s Ark in which we find the complete Museum of Natural History the world has ever seen. \nThe Museum of Jurassic Technology traces its origins to this period when many of the essential collections of today were beginning to take form. DESCRIPTION:OPEN WEDNESDAY – SUNDAY- San Pedro\nCabrillo Marine Aquarium welcomes you to come discover the underwater world of Southern California. \n \nSince 1935\, we have been exhibiting Southern California’s rich diversity and adaptations of our local sea life through a combination of aquaria\, interpretive displays and museum collections. Cabrillo Marine Aquarium’s Susanne Lawrenz-Miller Exhibit Hall\, Exploration Center\, Aquatic Nursery and Virginia Reid Moore Marine Research Library comprise a unique science education facility where visitors of all ages can pursue informal marine biology education\, ecological awareness\, and scientific research training. These complex topics are made fun and accessible by the creative and informative exhibits.\n\nSusanne Lawrenz-Miller Exhibit Hall\nThe Susanne Lawrenz-Miller Exhibit Hall showcases three major environments: Rocky Shores\, Sand and Mud\, and Open Ocean Ecosystems. Explore interpretative and live exhibits to learn about the many animals and plants that live in each habitat. From worms to whales – all are adapted to protect themselves\, find food and reproduce. \n\n\n\n\nKelp Forests\nThe richest habitat along our Californian rocky shores is the kelp forest. Giant kelp is the largest and fastest growing of all seaweeds and forms the framework for the kelp forest community. It attracts and influences many other species of animals and plants within the forest. Later\, when it tears loose as drift kelp\, it provides large quantities of food for animals living on the seashore and ocean bottom. \nKelp bass\, giant kelpfish\, garibaldi\, norris’ top snail\, and kelp crabs are all common inhabitants of the kelp forest. Kelp anchors to the rocky bottom with a structure called the holdfast. The holdfast has many crevices and is home to many other animals such as spiny brittlestars and amphipods. The leaf-like kelp blades (also called fronds) provide a large surface area for photosynthesis. On the blades themselves\, a bryozoan can grow rapidly and completely cover a kelp blade within 3-4 weeks. \nKelp forests are found along the west coasts of North and South America\, the southern tip of Africa and Australia\, and islands near Antarctica. Giant kelp grows best in well mixed\, cool\, clear ocean water. In southern California\, giant kelp beds were common until the 1950s. Changes in water conditions and the near extinction of the southern sea otter\, which resulted in a population explosion of the purple sea urchin\, severely reduced the size and number of local kelp beds for several years. Due to restoration efforts\, kelp forests have recovered along Palos Verdes in the last several years. \n \nMudflats\nThe mudflat habitat is an enclosed coastal area with fresh and saltwater saturated sediments. Mudflats appear barren but conceal a rich variety of life. Many animals depend on this fragile and threatened habitat. Commercially important fish\, such as the California halibut\, use this habitat as a nursery ground which provides protection and a rich source of food. \nThe area surrounding the upper part of the mud is called the saltmarsh and teems with plants. Marsh plants provide shelter and living space for other organisms. The breakdown and decay of these plants produce organic debris which is a rich food source for a variety of invertebrates\, like fiddler crabs and amphipods. These animals are an attractive food source for the mudflat’s large bird population\, including the willet and snowy egret. Over 100 species of birds reside in or visit southern California mudflats. \nThe highest zone is dominated by salt grass which can tolerate only the occasional tidal flooding that occurs at this level. The middle zone is characterized by pickleweed which is more tolerant of tidal flooding. The lowest zone teems with eel grass which is one of the few marsh plants that can grow completely underwater. \nVisit the mudflat room at the aquarium to learn more about marsh plants and the many animals that depend on this important habitat. \n\n\n\nRocky Shores\nThe rocky shore is a difficult place to live\, yet some of the largest and most diverse populations of marine plants and animals can be found here. Explore how these animals have many different adaptations to protect themselves and find food. \nSeaweeds and microscopic plants produce the basic food of the ocean using the sun’s energy. Seaweeds then provide food for such grazers as snails\, sea hares and urchins. In the rocky shore\, sponges\, sea squirts\, mussels\, fanworms and barnacles filter tiny food particles from the water. Sea anemones and their relatives are hungry predators. These animals\, in turn\, are eaten by the flamboyant nudibranch slugs and other snails. \nThe richest habitat along our Californian rocky shores is the kelp forest. Kelp grows up to two feet a day and provides food and shelter for many other plants and animals. \nHunters of the seashore capture their prey in different ways. Sea stars use hundreds of tube feet. Worms and snails may drill or harpoon their prey\, while some crabs use powerful crushing claws. \nWhile visiting the touch tank you can experience a variety of rocky shore marine life such as a sea star or a prickly urchin. The touch tank expert will teach you the names and special traits of the marine life as well as answer any of your questions. \n \nOpen Ocean\nThe vast open ocean and deep sea are home to delicate jellyfish\, light-producing animals\, and other organisms ranging from the beautiful to the bizarre.\n\nBe sure to stop by the Sea Jelly Lab and see what’s growing in this open husbandry lab. Students\, volunteers and staff are often seen working on a variety of projects here. You might even be shown baby jellies on the microscope monitor.\nShapes\, colors\, and behavior of the fish in the Fish Diversity Tank reflect where and how these fish live.  See how sharks come in an amazing variety of sizes\, shapes\, and habitats and how some of the biggest sharks are gentle filter-feeders instead of ferocious predators.\nThe Channel Islands are major breeding grounds for many thousands of seabirds\, seals and sea lions.  Feeding and nesting habitats are displayed.\nWhales and dolphins\, descended from land mammals\, are the largest and most intelligent animals of the ocean.  The lives of these big mammals are examined in special exhibits on feeding\, a video of various cetaceans\, displays of whale and dolphin skeletons\, and recordings of whale sounds\n\n\n\nOur marine life is all from Southern California. Want to see some of them and learn more?\n\n\nTake a look around our exhibits to experience the marine life of Southern California.\n\n\n  \nHours\nMonday & Tuesday: Closed\nWednesday – Sunday: 12:00am – 5:00pm \nAdmission is free but donations are appreciated\n\n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nhttps://www.cabrillomarineaquarium.org/\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n
