For many Angelenos\, the name evokes a panorama of memories—from picnics\, hikes\, horses\, and softball games to the zoo\, observatory\, trains\, and\, of course\, the Autry. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nBut how much do you really know about Griffith Park? How did it come to be\, and what are its best-kept secrets? Join us as we explore stories about Griffith Park\, a landscape that we honor as Tongva/Gabrielino land and a public park for Los Angeles. \n  \n \n  \nTo celebrate Griffith Park’s 125th anniversary in 2021\, the Autry\, has opened a community-led exhibition. The Autry’s newest exhibition\, Investigating Griffith Park\, a hands-on space that invites visitors to share their stories\, experiences\, and input on what the anniversary celebration should include. \n \n  \nOne section of the current gallery asks\, “What is the park to you?” and invites visitors to write responses. The museum says that while the public’s notes may influence the final exhibition\, they’re also helping the museum plan future questions\, focus group topics\, and talk-back sessions with partner organizations. \n \n\n\n\nWhile the Autry designed the gallery as a way to gather feedback from the public\, it’s also a great introduction to what the park offers. Visitors will find historical artifacts and photos\, video clips of Griffith Park’s many movie appearances\, a kids’ play area\, and an oversized board game about P-22\, the beloved mountain lion. \nEven the area of the park where the Autry is located has a fascinating history. In addition to the upcoming anniversary exhibition\, the Autry’s long-term plan includes building a research archive around Griffith Park in order to make it easier for people to study the park and to spur further research. \n  \n\n\n\n\nTimeline:\nCurrently open in its first phase of development\, we welcome your feedback as we further transform one of the Autry’s core galleries into an experiential\, hands-on space. Through Investigating Griffith Park\, we are gathering input from hundreds of visitors and experts to reveal some of the many stories from the park’s 4\,000-plus acres. You will have a fun learning experience as you tour INSIDE the historic train cars at the park.\n \n  \nTravel Town Museum is “an outdoor museum which features an impressive collection of \nLocomotives\nFreight Cars\nCabooses\n \nand passenger cars dating back to the 1800s. Travel Town is located in the northwest corner of Los Angeles\, California’s Griffith Park. The museum’s collection primary focuses on the history of railroad transportation in the western United States from 1880 to the 1930s is\, with an emphasis on Southern California and the Los Angeles area. \n\n\n\n\n\n \nFREE Docent Tours are held the 2nd Saturdays of the month\nfrom 11:00 am until 3:00 pm.\nGroup tours are available by reservation. For information call 323-668-0104\, ext. 12.\n\n \n  \n \nFor a different view of Travel Town\, ride the scale train which circles the perimeter of the museum for a nominal charge ($2.75 each). The ride travels around the museum twice. \n(16″ gauge) are: \nThe Courage – 2-6-0 Mogul\nA 2-6-0 mogul built by Gerry Bowden in 1993. Sister locomotive to the Stanley Diamond. \nThis locomotive and its brother unit the Stanley Diamond were built in Oregon in 1993 to a design by our chief engineer\, Gene Gustavson. They are modeled after the narrow gauge locomotives that worked the timber and mining areas of the West during the early part of the century. This unit has identical power as the Colonel Griffith. \n \n  \nhe 1986 – Diesel Switcher\nDiesel switcher built by Gerry Bowden in 1986. \nA classic yard goat design\, this locomotive is modeled after the EMD series of yard switchers. It is fitting that this is our heaviest and most powerful locomotive. \n \n  \nPullman style – Six seat coaches\nsix seat coaches built by George Reddington in 1956 for Gene Autry’s Melody Ranch Special train. \nSimilar to the Pullman style coaches at GPS but longer\, steel covers were added to these coaches in 1989 because Travel Town did not have a loading platform cover to protect the passenger seats from the sun. These coaches originally were a part of a set with a steam locomotive. The locomotive burned out its boiler and was sold in \n \n  \nThis railroad is one of three miniature railway train rides within Griffith Park. The others are the 18 1⁄2 in (470 mm) gauge Griffith Park & Southern Railroad and the 7 1⁄2 in (190.5 mm) gauge miniature railway at the Los Angeles Live Steamers Railroad Museum. The latter is independently operated. \nBe sure to also  visit during the holiday season to take advantage of the Holiday Light Festival Train Ride\, when the Museum is festively decorated and tens of thousands of lights transform the area into a magical wonderland. This program is sponsored by the LA Dodgers.\n\nLEARN-TO-SWIM New!\n\nOur progressive swim lessons teach swimming skills\, stroke technique and water safety while encouraging a lifelong love of the water. The program is designed to give students a positive learning experience while progressing steadily through the skills. Each level includes swimming skills as well as water safety lessons both for pools and open water. All levels follow the American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim program. Classes are offered Monday thru Friday with both morning and evening time available and Saturday mornings beginning June 21.\n\nADULT WATER EXERCISE New!\n\nWater Exercise can conform to almost any individual needs\, abilities or restrictions. You can adjust the size and speed of your movements to change the level of exertion that best fits your needs. There are benches\, chairs\, and tables for adults to sit while the kids play.  \n\n\nBeach Soccer & Volleyball Courts\nYou may reserve beach soccer or volleyball courts 4 weeks in advance for $10/hour during the summer pool season. Can I renew?\nThe kits can be borrowed for 3 weeks. If no other customers are on the waiting list\, the checkout can be renewed up to 3 times. How do I return the Chromebook Kit?\nChromebooks must be returned in person to the owning library during Sidewalk Service hours. They cannot be returned in the bookdrop. Staff will bring out a box labeled Laptop Return to the Sidewalk Service table. You’ll be instructed to remove all items – the Chromebook\, the wireless hotspot\, and both charging cables – from the carrying case. Put the case into the box first\, on the bottom\, and then put all other items in on top. Staff will check the box to make sure all items are inside and that they look fine. All items will be quarantined for 4 days and confirmed to be working properly before being checked in. Staff will contact you if there are any questions or concerns. Please remember that the loan will still show on your account until the quarantine and check-in process is complete.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n6. Are there late fees?\nLate fees will be assessed the same as all other library materials. The Chromebook will become disabled once the loan period has ended.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n7. This program is sponsored by the LA Dodgers.\n\nLEARN-TO-SWIM New!\n\nOur progressive swim lessons teach swimming skills\, stroke technique and water safety while encouraging a lifelong love of the water. Each level includes swimming skills as well as water safety lessons both for pools and open water. All levels follow the American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim program. Classes are offered Monday thru Friday with both morning and evening time available and Saturday mornings beginning June 21.\n\nADULT WATER EXERCISE New!\n\nWater Exercise can conform to almost any individual needs\, abilities or restrictions. You can adjust the size and speed of your movements to change the level of exertion that best fits your needs. DESCRIPTION:EVERY DAY ’til MIDNIGHT- Dockweiler State Beach\nThe Dockweiler Beach Fire Pits are located about 3 miles south of Playa del Rey\, this inviting beach features 3 miles of shoreline\, an RV park\, and over 2\,000 regular vehicle parking spaces. The wide sandy beach lies beneath the departures flight path of LAX\, offering fantastic belly views of airlines headed out over the Pacific. The lot entrance is at Vista del Mar and Imperial Highway. \n\n\nFIRE PITS RULES\n\n\n\n\n\nAny grills or BBQs must fit inside the fire pit\, which is 2′ wide. No grills\, grilling\, or flames or fires on the sand.\nTo use the fire pits\, you bring your own charcoal or wood and a way to light them.\nPlease do not use sand to put out the fire.\nHelp keep our beaches clean by preventing ashes or debris from falling into the sand.\n\n  \n\n\n\nThere’s no better way to end a fun day at the beach than to circle up around a cozy bonfire. Not all California beaches allow bonfires\, but here in the Marina del Rey area\, we’re lucky that Dockweiler State Beach does permit regulated burns in provided fire rings. Follow these tips to ensure your group has an enjoyable time. \n\nIf you want a pit\, arrive early. From May through September\, the pits are in high demand\, especially on the weekends\, and there are some diehards who arrive at dawn to claim their spots for the entire day. You cannot reserve fire pits as you would a campsite. Do not leave your pit unattended\, even for a quick dip in the ocean – if you do\, don’t be surprised to find another group has taken over the site. There are between 60 – 80 fire pits located just north and south of where Vista del Mar intersects with Imperial Highway. That sounds like a lot\, but consider that Dockweiler is also home to an RV park\, and you’re all competing for space.\nBring everything you need – wood\, s’mores\, snacks\, et cetera (see “Your Packing List” below).\nThe beach and all amenities close at midnight.\nBefore you leave\, snuff out the flame with water. Stir the embers after they are covered with water and make sure that everything is saturated. Do not use sand to distinguish the fire\, as it creates a mess for the next guest.\n\n \nYOUR PACKING LIST\n\nWood and charcoal (wood for that nice bonfire and charcoal for cooking – see below about barbecue rules). Both can be purchased at Ralph’s grocery stores: 4700 Admiralty Way\, Marina del Rey; 8701 Lincoln Boulevard\, Playa del Rey. Only burn clean wood (nothing treated with paint\, chemicals\, etc.) in the pits.\nFire starter and a lighter. You can purchase kindling from most any grocery\, home supply\, or sporting-goods store. Or\, prepare your own starter with this old-school camping craft: Fill a cardboard egg carton with dryer lint\, wood shavings\, paper shreds\, or other ignitable materials. Pour a small amount of melted candle wax into each cup to make things stay put. Break off cups individually and place into your wood stack. Light the cardboard cups and watch how easy your fire takes off – even in the wind.\nIf barbecuing\, note that large stand-up barbeques are NOT allowed on the sand or in the parking lots. However\, you can bring a low-profile version and place it inside the fire ring.\nLong-handle grilling sticks. These are great for cooking hot dogs and kabobs and roasting marshmallows.\nHot glove or mitt. Don’t ruin your night with a burn from handling hot wood\, pots\, or grills. Items like the Ove Glove offer protection while still allowing dexterity.\nFood! Doubt you’ll forget this\, but you may want a separate checklist so that you remember all the elements for your meal. It’s easy to overlook things like serving spoons\, plastic utensils\, salt and pepper\, napkins or wet wipes\, and containers for leftovers. Paper plates are great for cookouts since they’re ok to burn in the fire afterward.\nCamp/beach table. Depending on the size of your group\, you may prefer to set up your dinner fixings buffet style on a simple folding table. Whatever you bring\, remember that you’ll need to carry it across the sand to the pit and back to the parking lot at the end of your evening. So only take what you really need.\nYou’ll want a beverage cooler with ice\, especially if you heed our warning and arrive early in the day to claim your spot. A bag to hold discarded recyclables is a good idea\, too.\nComfort items. Ask each person in your group to bring his or her own beach chair or picnic blanket.
