DESCRIPTION:TUESDAY TO SUNDAY  – Italian American Museum of Los Angeles\nThe Italian American Museum of Los Angeles\, or IAMLA\, is located in the historic Italian Hall\, which was constructed in 1908 to serve as a gathering place for the Italian community. Today\, the Italian Hall is the oldest remaining structure from Los Angeles’ Italian enclave and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. \n \nTHE HISTORY\nItalians and Italian Americans have played an instrumental role in the development of Los Angeles as one of the world’s greatest metropolises\, yet the history of Italians in the region is largely unknown. Though Los Angeles is home to the nation’s fifth-largest Italian population today\, and the Italian presence in the American West predates the nation’s founding\, seldom is the city included in dialogs surrounding contemporary or historic Italian American communities. An examination of the region’s Italian roots reveals both the complexity of the Italian Diaspora and the exceptionally diverse fabric of Southern California’s history. \n \nThe Los Angeles Italian experience contrasts with that of Italian immigrants elsewhere in the country and reveals the complexity of the Italian American diaspora. Given the success that Italian Americans have achieved in the United States\, it is easy to forget that they\, like other minority groups\, faced considerable prejudice and hostility in their struggle to achieve the American Dream. In the American South\, Italians were a common target of lynchings and racially-motivated violence. In the early 20th century\, eugenicists described Italians as genetically inferior\, while political cartoons of the era depicted Italians as threats to American security and racial purity. \nTHE MISSION\nThe mission of the Italian American Museum of Los Angeles is to foster a deeper understanding of Southern California’s diverse heritage through research\, historic preservation\, exhibitions\, and educational programs that examine the history and continuing contributions of Italian Americans in multi-ethnic Los Angeles and the United States. \nThe IAMLA is a charity that depends on donations to accomplish its specific mission. It houses not only historic aircraft\, many of which were built in Southern California\, but also has an extensive collection of historic photographs and blueprints. \n  \nThe WMOF is one of two museums that house the only surviving Jack Northrop flying wings. The museum has several other rare aircraft among its collection\, including: \n  \n \nNorth American F-86Sabre Jet \n \nNorthrop YF-17 “Cobra” (Prototype #1) \n \nThe Northrop N-3PB World War II single engine seaplane built in 1940. Twenty four N-3PB’s were built\, this is the only remaining example. \n  \n \nPlus numerous other notable jet- and propeller-drive airplanes. \n  \n \nThe Western Museum of Flight- Aircraft Model Collection \nis quite extensive. It was designed in the Streamline Moderne style by architect Derwood Lydell Irvin of the Los Angeles Harbor Department. It was built in 1941 at Berth 84\, by the Works Project Administration (WPA). \nThe ferry between San Pedro and Terminal Island ceased after the Vincent Thomas Bridge was opened to traffic in 1963. The building was then used for offices of the LA Harbor Department. The San Pedro Municipal Ferry Building is now a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. \nThe Los Angeles Maritime Museum opened in 1979 as a result of widespread community efforts to save the historic building. It is the largest maritime museum on the West Coast. The museum’s interior renovation was designed by Modernist architect James Pulliam. The museum is operated by the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks. \n\nEXHIBITS\nANGELS GATE TUGBOAT\n \nThe tugboat ANGELS GATE arrived at the Museum in 1992\, after almost 50 years of providing general towing services and goodwill tours for the Port of Los Angeles. \nTĀMINARU\n \nIn the early 20th century\, Terminal Island (in the Port of Los Angeles) was home to approximately 3\,000 Japanese-Americans who earned their livelihood from catching and cleaning fish. Residents of this community\, known as “Terminal Islanders” were originally from the Wakayama Prefecture\, Japan\, and retained their language and customs after emigrating to Los Angeles harbor. \nTāminaru is a look back at this lost community. The exhibit is guest curated by author Naomi Hirahara\, organized by Tara Fansler\, and sponsored by the Friends of the Los Angeles Maritime Museum and the Japan Business Association with the assistance of the Terminal Islanders Club. \nPOSEIDON MODEL\n \nThere is a movie star on the second floor! The model of the SS POSEIDON was the original prop in the 1972 classic film “The Poseidon Adventure”. \nFifteen men built the model over a period of three months. POSEIDON is 21 .5 feet long and weighs one ton. The builders relied on the plans of the RMS QUEEN MARY\, now permanently docked as an attraction in Long Beach\, California. \nNAVY HALL\n \nThe Museum building\, built-in 1941\, was originally used as a ferry terminal\, transporting people and automobiles between San Pedro and Terminal Island. The area of the first floor where cars would enter and exit is now used as the Navy Hall. \nANGELS GATE LIGHT\n \nThe Angels Gate Lighthouse (officially known as Los Angeles Harbor Light) has marked the entrance of Los Angeles Harbor through times of war and peace\, and even survived a tidal wave! The tower itself has undergone many changes through the years. The distinctive green flash of the Angels Gate Lighthouse remains a welcoming beacon to professional mariners and recreational boaters alike. \nKIDS EXHIBIT\n \nKids of all ages will discover what’s going on in the harbor today through a series of interactive games and activities in the children’s exhibit. Grab a pair of binoculars and take a close-up look at the nation’s busiest container port! Learn how cranes work\, imagine yourself in a variety of harbor professions\, build your own wharves\, test your knowledge of ships and cargo\, or just settle down and enjoy a nautical story!\nDue to Covid-19-related precautions\, the toys and costumes have been temporarily removed. \nCAUGHT\, CANNED\, AND EATEN\n \nThe Port of Los Angeles (San Pedro) was the fishing capital of the nation for much of the twentieth century. Generations of fishermen sold catches of tuna\, sardines\, mackerel\, and squid to fish markets or canneries on nearby Terminal Island. \nToday\, the fishing fleet is greatly diminished and the canneries have closed\, but the legacy of the fishing and canning industries endures. \nCOMMERCIAL DIVING\n \n  \nThis exhibit is an introduction to just a few of the thousands of jobs performed by commercial divers and fishery divers in the South Bay\, and was the inspiration of the late Torrance R. Parker\, noted commercial diver and author of 20\,000 Jobs Under the Sea. \nSCHOOL TOURS\nThe museum is pleased to offer educational tours throughout the year at no charge. \nThe museum is located on the Main Channel of Los Angeles Harbor. Students will have a front-row opportunity to see the massive container ships in action and learn about international trade\, ship terminology\, sailor’s art\, and the history of the working people who built Los Angeles harbor into the nation’s busiest container port. \nTours are free for grades K-12\, Wednesday –Friday mornings\, and reservations are REQUIRED. Come run with us. \n48 for Change\nWith the combination of a global pandemic and civil unrest around racial injustice\, June of 2020 set the stage for important societal and human issues to finally come to light in a more permanent way. This was the same time that two friends\, Justin and Tyler\, decided they wanted to take action to make a difference in the injustices and inequality we see in our communities. \n\n\n\nThe week of George Floyd’s passing\, Justin called Tyler voicing his frustration from Floyd’s murder and subsequent reactions\, and they joined forces to do a running challenge that very weekend that entailed running 4 miles every 4 hours for 48 hours. A GoFundMe was set up to collect funds from friends and family throughout the running challenge to donate to help support racial justice. \nWhat started as a way to take the mind off of the pressure cooker of injustice resulted in a massively successful and attention-grabbing fundraiser\, and eventually turned into a 501(c)3 nonprofit\, still strong and growing today: 48 For Change. \nAside from fundraising and donating\, Justin found that the community that gathered to run that weekend was something special\, and needed its own spotlight. A place where anyone can come and simply run with a group of good people. White\, Los Angeles Mayor Fred Eaton\, and Ex-President Richard M. In 1848\, California was a tranquil wilderness where the population density was so low that\, on average\, only one human being dwelt per every 528 square miles. But after President James K. Polk made the official announcement on Dec. 5\, 1848\, that gold had been discovered\, things ramped up very quickly. \nGold seekers (mostly young men) came in droves from all corners of the earth. Within a short time\, 100\,000 people were living in California. They were industrious\, civic-minded people. They held a Constitutional Convention and activated a state government on Dec. 20\, 1849. They acted so rapidly that it took Congress almost a year to catch up. Partially because California was not officially declared a state until Sept. 9\, 1850. \nIt was an unparalleled phenomenon. No other American state has been organized in such “can-do” circumstances. But by the mid-1870s\, many more new residents were flooding into California. \nThey were Civil War veterans seeking grants of public lands. Some people could enjoy the convenient transportation of the newly completed transcontinental railroad. \n \nOld-timers shook their heads and worried that\, with the nature of the population changing so rapidly. That it was only a matter of time before the colorful history of the Gold Rush and early-day statehood soon would be forgotten and neglected. So they hit upon an idea. Why not form an organization of men who had been BORN in California? We meet each Sunday at 11:11am\, where 45th Street meets The Beach \n\nLiving Yoga with Alicia\nJoin a group of incredible souls in community. This is a space held for beginners to experience students that want a deeper connection to themselves through yoga\, connection of breath\, and meditation. \nThis is a free outdoor class with the fresh breeze and beautiful view of the beach. \nEveryone will be safely social distancing while making new friends. \nCome to let go\, surrender and allow ALL TO BE WELL. This is a place of growth\, connection\, and healing. \nBring a mat\, and invite a friend. Living water provided. \n  \n\nHow to find us\nThe location is at that end of El Porto. Where 45th street meets the beach in Manhattan Beach. You will see a grassy area right before the strand. Free outdoor concerts\, featuring great performers playing R and B\, Jazz\, Latin\, Pop\, and Blues in Fisherman’s Village on Sundays\, 2-5 p.m!  \nMark your calendars for Music by the Sea every Sunday from 2 pm – 5 pm ⁠ \n? NO outside food or coolers are allowed at this event⁠ \n?️ Please support our Fisherman’s Village businesses\n\n\n\nFisherman’s Village\n13737 Fiji Way\, Marina del Rey\, CA\, 90292 \nFisherman’s Village is a replica of a New England seaport and fishing town. You can stroll the quiet harborfront to enjoy views of the Marina\, passing sailboats\, and wildlife. There are several restaurants\, the Marina del Rey Historical Society’s exhibit space\, and a smattering of shops. Free live music is offered on the plaza on Saturday and Sunday afternoons year-round (weather depending); find the current lineup below or in our events calendar. The village is the boarding place for City Cruises by Hornblower’s year-round dining cruises and Marina del Rey Parasailing (closed November-February)\, as well as one of the Marina’s destinations for hourly and daily rentals of sailing and power boats\, jet skis\, kayaks\, and paddle boards. Fisherman’s Village also serves as one of eight pick-up/drop-off locations for the WaterBus (operates during the summer only).
