SUMMARY:Homeschooling Made Easy
DESCRIPTION:ENCYCLOPEDIA BRITANNICA ONLINE Free With Your Library Card\nWelcome to Britannica School\, a safe\, up-to-date\, and age-appropriate information resource for Elementary\, Middle\, and High School. Discover encyclopedia articles\, multimedia\, primary sources\, games\, and other learning resources that support student research and reinforce curriculum standards. \n\n\n\n\n\nSIGN ON HERE WITH YOUR LOS ANGELES PUBLIC LIBRARY CARD\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n  \n \n  \n  \n\n  \n\nAge-appropriate for K-12\n\n\nBritannica School offers age-appropriate resources at 4 levels\, the Learning Zone for early learners and elementary\, middle and high school levels. \n\n  \n\n\n \nElementary\nSelect Elementary learning and begin your adventure looking for people\, places\, and things. Watch and learn with videos and animations. Have fun with games and activities. \n  \n \nMiddle & School Versions Grow as they do\nMany online products offer multiple levels for different ages\, but often struggling readers are reluctant to move to a lower level because the interface and experience are designed for younger students. With Britannica School\, content is available at all three reading levels and students can move quickly from one level to another without changing the look and feel of the site. Content and Interface work together to give the user an experience tailored to their needs. For example\, if elementary students move to a level with more advanced content\, their interface becomes more advanced as well; but middle and high school students stay in their more advanced interfaces\, even if they choose level 1. \n  \n  \n \nFor Educators and Home School Teachers\n\n\nOur biggest users tell us that students\, teachers and librarians all want to go beyond looking up content. You want to filter\, tag favorites\, adjust reading levels\, share content\, and serendipitously discover new and related ideas. \nWith Britannica School\, educators can map text and multimedia to classroom activities on the fly and even toggle within an article to see the State and Common Core standards associated with it. Teachers can create\, save and share lesson plans using the new lesson plan builder. They can map Britannica content\, define steps and activities\, select materials and share their ideas with other teachers. They can also access and review plans created by other teachers. \n\n\n\nBritannica School’s ESL/ELL Support\n\n\nEnglish language learners may choose to have articles read aloud with each word highlighted as it is read to increase comprehension. \nOther tools are built in for support as well including the Quick Click dictionary that provides definitions and audio pronunciations right when the reader needs them without leaving the article. \nBritannica School also offers multiple translation tools with an emphasis on Spanish-English translation but with more than 50 world languages available. \n\n\nUse Anywhere\nBritannica School is accessible at school\, home or anywhere you have an internet connection. Britannica School is designed to fit to any device—you can access content on a computer\, tablet\, or even a phone\, and Britannica School’s design will fit your screen. \n\n \n  \n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nbritannica.com\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n  \n

Straight from California family farms to your table. Bon appetit! \nBegun in 1977\, the Certified Farmers Market (CFM) program exempted farmers from prior packing\, sizing and labeling requirements. According to the California Department of Food & Agriculture\, this has a number of benefits to consumers and the agricultural community: CFMs — \n\n\nBring fresh\, high quality goods from producers and create a diverse market. \n\n\n Give consumers opportunities to meet the farmer and learn how their food supply is produced. \n\n\n Provide a great opportunity for small farmers to market their products without the added expenses of commercial preparation. This increases their net income and makes it possible for them to stay in business. \n\n\n Offer a flexible marketing alternative without disrupting other produce marketing systems. \n\n\nThere are approximately 800 Certified Farmers Markets in California and approximately 2\,500 certified producers. Of these markets\, 50% are year-round markets. The balance are seasonal\, generally operating from April through October. \n\nHours\n4th Sunday of the Month: 10:00am – 2:00pm\n\n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nwww.marvistafarmersmarket.org\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Train Rides in Torrance
DESCRIPTION:EVERY 1st SUNDAY & 3rd SATURDAY- Wilson Park\, Torrance\nSouthern California Live Steamers provides mini-train rides on public run days every first Sunday of the month from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and every third Saturday of the month from noon to 3 p.m. All SCLS members are City of Torrance volunteers with annual fingerprint clearance and are not paid for their time expended on maintaining the trains and facility\, and providing the rides.Donations are appreciated. \n  \n \nIn 1987\, for the Torrance 75th anniversary event\, the City of Torrance asked SCLS if they could set up a small track on the back end of Wilson Park. At the time this was a vacant lot\, no trees and only weeds for vegetation. Considerable effort was expended by both the City and SCLS to prepare the area and lay the tracks necessary to run the trains. During the City’s 75th Anniversary Celebration in October 1987\, the free train rides were so well received by the public that the City sought to have SCLS run the trains on a regular basis. On May 11\, 1990\, the City and SCLS entered into a 25-year License Agreement allowing SCLS to provide free train rides at Wilson Park on a regular basis. A new home was found! \nANOTHER 25 YEARS \nThe mini-train rides have become a popular feature of Wilson Park. Originally\, free train rides were offered once a month on the first Sunday of each month. Today\, SCLS provides free train rides twice a month on the first Sunday and third Saturday of each month\, and on special occasions. The City and SCLS entered into another 25-year lease agreement thru May 11\, 2040. \nSouthern California Live Steamers\, Inc. operates as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization under IRS rules and is a registered California non-profit corporation. All of the income for the operation of SCLS is derived by donations from its members\, passengers and corporate sponsors\, and thru fundraisers. SCLS does not charge the passengers for rides on public run days\, though donations are accepted from our riders on public run days which is on the 1st Sunday and 3rd Saturday of each month. Funds received are used to pay SCLS expenses such as insurance\, maintenance costs\, facility upgrades\, fuel\, track repairs\, future track projects\, and other expenses. All SCLS members are City of Torrance volunteers and are not paid for their time expended on club projects or operations. \nmers \n  \nHours\n3rd Saturdays: 12:00pm – 3:00pm\n1st Sundays: 11:00am – 3:00pm \n\nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nhttps://www.torranceca.gov/\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

SUMMARY:Hollywood Heritage Museum
DESCRIPTION:OPEN EVERY FRIDAY-SUNDAY- Hollywood\nThe Hollywood Heritage Museum\, is located in the Lasky-DeMille Barn\, which was built in 1901.  The story of the early Hollywood motion picture industry and the historic Hollywood community is told through archival photographs\, historic documents\, movie props and related memorabilia.  Visitors experience the actual structure where Cecil B. DeMille’s office exists\, furnished with selected personal DeMille belongings\, and where countless movies were filmed and studio staff worked and played. \nOn December 27\, 1956\, the Lasky-DeMille Barn was designated California State Historic Landmark No. 554\, recognizing the significant role the building played in the birth of the Hollywood motion picture industry.  Since 1985\, Hollywood Heritage\, Inc. has funded the preservation\, restoration and maintenance of the barn. It’s the oldest existing motion picture production building in Hollywood\, having been established as the Burns-Revier Studio in 1912\, and becoming the Jesse L. Lasky Feature Play Company in 1913.  The Lasky Company merged with Adolph Zuckor’s Famous Players in 1916\, becoming Famous Players-Lasky and merging with Paramount Distributing Company\, finally becoming Paramount Pictures Corporation. In 2014\, the Lasky-DeMille Barn was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. [See the Time Line on the Museum link for a more detailed history of the barn]. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nVISITING THE MUSEUM\nThe Hollywood Heritage Museum is open Friday\, Saturday and Sunday from noon until 4 pm. As we share our ample parking lot with the Hollywood Bowl\, the museum is occasionally closed when the Bowl has an event.  If you are traveling a long way to visit us\, it might be a good idea to phone first to make sure we are open: (323) 874-2276. \n\n\nPARKING\nParking is free. There is a large parking area on the east side of Highland Avenue\, in front of the museum.  There is no entrance facing Highland Avenue.  You have to go around the corner either on Milner Road or Odin Street and immediately turn into the lot.  If there are parking lot attendants at a barricade\, tell them that you are visiting the museum. \nPUBLIC TRANSPORTATION\nThe Metro subway station closest to the Museum is the Hollywood-Highland stop.  We are located approximately a half-mile north on Highland Avenue\, about a 12-minute walk. \nBECOME A DOCENT:\nHollywood Heritage is a volunteer driven organization. Our docents assist museum guests and help with our Barn programs\, as well as many other activities associated with historic preservation issues and the day-to-day activities that make our organization so vital.  If you are interested in becoming involved\, click here. \n  \n \nHOLLYWOOD HERITAGE ARCHIVE:\nHollywood Heritage maintains an archive of historic photographs\, documents\, and other material related to the film industry and the community.  Our archive also includes considerable holdings on Hollywood real estate history and buildings of architectural significance.  We continue to seek material related to our dual mission of industry and community history.  Questions regarding our archive and donations procedures should be directed to our Collections Manager\, Richard Adkins. \nDONATION OF PHYSICAL ITEMS:\nHollywood Heritage welcomes donations both monetary and physical objects.  Donated items fall into two categories. \nFor resale in the Museum Store:  The museum store contains new and used items.  The older items are all donated to Hollywood Heritage and include books on the motion picture industry and its participants\, and books on the Los Angeles area.  It also includes used DVDs\, VHS tapes and other electronic storage of motion pictures\, as well as related items. These types of donated items can be dropped off at the museum along with the donor’s name and address so that\, if desired\, donor recognition and/or a tax letter can be provided by the Collections Manager. \nFor Hollywood Heritage Archive:  These are items that Hollywood Heritage’s curator agrees are compatible with our collection.  An appointment may be set up with our Collections Manager.  Much of the collection has been donated by individuals and families with relatives who contributed to the film industry and the Hollywood community\, often with the goal of preserving their relatives’ participation in Hollywood. We are also interested in photographs or other documentation of any properties in Hollywood\, as we maintain an archive of each property by address.  For further information about donations you may contact our museum manager. \nHollywood Heritage\, Inc. is a 501(c) 3 California state non-profit corporation.  All donations are tax deductible to the full extent of the law.  We will be happy to provide a receipt for donations for tax purposes. \n\n  \n  \n \nAdmission:\nHollywood Heritage members:  Free! The dedication of the Museum also served as the acknowledgement of what was believed to be the city’s first 100 years of service by African American Firefighters (1897-1997). In 2002\, the Los Angeles Times contacted the AAFFM and stated they had discovered factual information to indicate the history started before 1897 with a man named Sam Haskins\, who was listed as the first Los Angeles Fireman of African decent when he was hired in 1892 and killed while responding to a fire in 1895. \nToday the Museum is open to the public and is strictly volunteer and donation driven. It is a 501 c(3) non-profit organization and it is available for use by organizations and individuals that desire to host events such as; meetings\, luncheons\, dinners\, banquets\, book signings\, film viewings\, jazz festivals\, social dances\, receptions and retreats. Our beloved historian\, 96 year old retired Firefighter Arnett Hartsfield\, who passed away in 2014 was our most cherished volunteer. As a Los Angeles Firefighter during the 1940s and 50’s he lead the integration of the Los Angeles Fire Department. As a graduate of USC law school\, he and his fellow firemen known as the Stentorians\, the NAACP and the local community were instrumental in successfully integrating the LAFD. The stories of the men that endured that horrific fight are told by the museum’s photographs\, paintings\, and artifacts. \nMISSION STATEMENT\nThe African American Fire Fighter Museum is dedicated to collecting\, conserving\,  and sharing the heritage of African American Fire Fighters through collaboration and education. \n\n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nwww.aaffmuseum.org\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

DESCRIPTION:OPEN THURSDAY – SUNDAY- Santa Monica\nThe Santa Monica History Museum was founded under the “Historical Activities Committee” of Santa Monica’s Centennial Celebration in 1975 and by a public poll\, with their goal to collect\, preserve\, and be the caretaker of history. Its name at that time was the Santa Monica Historical Society and it was designated as the official collector and preserver of the history\, art\, and culture of the Santa Monica Bay Area. Former Mayor Clo Hoover\, the first woman mayor of Santa Monica\, was elected the first president. \n\nThe museum\, one of the largest in the country for a city the size of Santa Monica\, has grown far beyond expectations with an expansive collection of artifacts\, photographs\, and memorabilia. Thousands of hours have been dedicated to public education and museum services. \n \nWith the help of Louise and Bob Gabriel who had been active in the community for years and had a strong love for Santa Monica and its history took on the responsibility to make the museum a reality.  Within three years\, with determination\, perseverance\, and countless hours of work\, Bob headed the fundraising committee and raised the necessary funds. Louise was able to get all the furnishings for the museum donated by companies that were going out of business. Bob found a temporary rent‐free location on Colorado Avenue. \n\n\nOur Mission\nThe Santa Monica History Museum’s mission is to collect\, preserve and share the history and culture of Santa Monica for generations to come. \n\n\n\n\nOur Vision\nThe Santa Monica History Museum is the steward of the rich history of the Santa Monica Bay area. We are committed to enriching our community by providing public access to our extensive collection with interpretive exhibitions\, public programs\, community partnerships\, and through archival and research services. \n\n\n\nCURRENT EXHIBITION FROM APRIL 1 – DECEMBER 23\, 2022\nBroadway to Freeway:\nLife and Times of a Vibrant Community\n \nIn the mid-20th century\, the Broadway neighborhood was a thriving\, tight-knit community in Santa Monica. Built by African American\, Mexican American\, and immigrant communities\, the Broadway neighborhood was a haven for those who were excluded from other parts of the city by racist and anti-immigrant policies and practices. \nThis exhibition tells the story of how residents built Broadway into a flourishing community of color – and how the Interstate 10 freeway destroyed it in the 1960s. The vibrant lives of pioneering individuals – like the first African American teacher and social worker hired in Santa Monica – are knitted into the neighborhood they built together. The community populated Broadway with welcoming schools\, homes\, and businesses – from beauty parlors and jazz clubs\, to the malt shop\, tortilleria\, and Jewish deli. \n \nFeaturing period photographs\, advertisements\, oral histories\, and songs\, the exhibition draws on the wealth of archival material collected by the Quinn Research Center\, which is dedicated to preserving the history of African American life in Santa Monica. \nToday\, little evidence remains of the community on the blocks between 13th Street and 20th Street\, once the heart of the Broadway neighborhood. Though physically erased\, Broadway lives on in the stories that are preserved and shared to illuminate past inequities and spotlight the inspirational individuals who created a center of social and civic life on their own terms. \n\nAdmissions\n\nGeneral – $5.00\nSeniors & Students – $5.00\nChildren under 12 – Free\nMuseum members – Free\nVeterans & Active-duty military – Free \n\nHours\nMonday – Wednesday: Closed\nThursday: 3:00pm – 8:00pm\nFriday – Sunday: 11:00am – 5:00pm \nMuseum Holiday Hours\nWe are closed in observance of the following holidays: New Year’s Day\, President’s Day\, Easter\, Memorial Day\, July 4th\, Labor Day\, Thanksgiving\, and the day after\, Christmas \n\nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nsantamonicahistory.org\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

DESCRIPTION:FREE ALL NIGHT!- Culver City\nCarbon Lounge in Culver City! presents BUMPS & JAMZ with DJ OnTheCLOCK’s EVERY SUNDAY\, No Cover Hip Hop House Party! \n\nEVERY SUNDAY\n\nGreat DJ’s\,\n  \n \nTop Shelf Bar\nFree Entry\, Free Parking\, \n  \nBUMPs & JAMz Hours\nEvery Sundays: 9:00pm – 2:00am \n\n\nCarbon Lounge- 9300 Venice Blvd Culver City\, CA 90232\n\nCarbon Lounge is a fun\, local\, and energetic bar in Downtown Culver City spinning different music 7-days a week. The vibe was real chill and the music was always poppin’! You could tell the DJ was giving us his best because he was dj’n like it was a Saturday night!\n\n\n \nThe venue is small but kind of open since it has two entrances. It is really dark too so don’t expect to be able to see much while you’re in there. \n\n\nWhat are people saying about Carbon on Yelp?\nThis place was a nice vibe with music you could really dance to you. The demographic was diverse and I could always love a diverse crowd- Alexis G. Perth Amboy\, NJ \nI come here when I want a ghetto ass place to get a stiff drink and shake my ass in a dive bar. Drinks have gotten a little pricey but they’re spicy. Appreciate the dicey atmosphere within steps of boujee downtown Culver City. Music late nights and they’re not open until late (9 is late for my old ass). Directly across from in n out on Venice or walk through the alley behind the east side of Main st in Culver City toward Venice Blvd.- Jen A. Culver City\, CA \nSo I came here not knowing what to expect. I usually go to parties and clubs in OC or dance festivals. I’m 47 years old and single guy btw.\nTo make it short\, the minute I got there I was approached by 2 extremely attractive white blonde girls. Unfortunately I found out one of them wasn’t even of legal age. But the other girl was. We danced and drank and all. We exchanged numbers and she actually called me.\nThis never happened to me in 33 years of going to clubs (yes I did go clubbing and drinking at the age of 14 when I lived in Germany…don’t know how I’m still alive and work for one of the most exciting and innovative companies on the planet lol.)\nSo yeah… go there. You won’t get disappointed. A LOT OF WHITE GIRLS WHO LIKE MINORITIES GO THERE. So much so that this place has more white chicks than guys lol- Alireza S. SUMMARY:Good Times at Davey Wayne's
DESCRIPTION:EVERY SUNDAY – Hollywood\nGood Times at Davey Wayne’s in Hollywood presents Strange Hotels\, every Sunday night.  Featuring 70’s DJ sets\, an energetic and charismatic host\, and a live performance by Strange Hotels\, it’s a whole ass vibe. \n  \n \nStrange Hotels- Indie- Electro Rock Duo\nOpening to a buzzing crowd of all ages\, cultures\, and persuasions–in an eclectic industrial atmosphere complete with burlesque dancers\, smoke machines\, and incense – the barefoot duo delivered an energetic set of life and synthesized dance sound and know-how-to to keep their audience engaged. Their continuous energetic\, driven show resulted in a bumper-to-bumper dance floor as they performed to a packed house of diverse\, die-hard hipster fans. \n \n\nAfter touring for years as a part of Portland’s iconic touring band The Lower 48\, cousins Ben Braden and Nick Sadler formed their indie-electro duo Strange Hotels in early 2018\, and within weeks of forming the duo\, they had the opportunity to open for Billie Eilish and Finneas at the Crystal Ballroom in Portland. Their songs have also been featured in several TV shows including Shameless\, Viceʼs King Of The Road\, and Conan O’Brien’s Needs a Friend.  They have described Strange Hotels as the most collaborative project they have been a part of and are a sonic blend of dance\, R&B\, vintage pop\, and indie rock.  They have taken a very DIY approach to record their songs\, recording and producing their music solely on iPads.  This allowed them to record in Airbnb’s and apartment studios on the road and\, as a result\, they released their debut and well-received EP Mixtape in January of 2018. They moved to Los Angles in 2019 and booked a residency at their favorite club\, booked other gigs\, and wrote a new batch of songs\, releasing their second EP\, Mixtape II\, at the end of 2019.  Going through some hard times during the pandemic and shutdowns in the music industry\, with things having opened back up\, they have been staying busy!   They recently released their latest single “Teen Dream Fantasy”\, a dreamy hit that strikes a chord of nostalgia with uplifting and energetic production\, captivating synth work\, and a stellar groove\, produced by The Strokes’ producer Gordon Raphael. \n\n \n1611 North El Centro Avenue\, Los Angeles\, CA 90028 \n \nDavid Wayne Houston\, father to Mark and Jonnie Houston\, was a blue-collar pool shark who enjoyed late nights in his garage building and fixing things–some of the brothers’ best memories. Known by his friends (and the ladies) as Davey\, this 70’s bar is a tribute to him and to all who have lost their dads. \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n1970’s bar brought to you by Houston Hospitality\nDress code: Comfy\, California\, Casual – No athletic wear or shorts/sandals after dark.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\nDress code: No shorts/sandals after dark. SUMMARY:The Museum of Contemporary Art
DESCRIPTION:Barbara Kruger\, Untitled (Questions)- DTLA\n\n  \n\n\nMOCA has reinstalled the monumental wall work by Los Angeles–based artist Barbara Kruger (b. New York 1945)\, Untitled (Questions) (1990/2018). The emblematic red\, white\, and blue artwork was originally commissioned by MOCA in 1989 for the exhibition A Forest of Signs: Art in the Crisis of Representation\, and was last installed in 1990 on the south wall of MOCA’s building (now The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA). The work holds an iconic place in the collective memory of Los Angeles’s art community and is considered one of the museum’s curatorial highlights over its forty-year history. \n\nThis iteration is installed on the north facade of The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA\, facing Temple Street and measuring 30 by 191 feet. Asking nine questions including “Who is beyond the law?\,” “Who is bought and sold?\,” and “Who is free to choose?\,” the work points to issues of patriotism\, civic engagement\, and power relations. In connection with the work\, MOCA led a series of voter registration efforts during the 2018 midterms\, and will continue these efforts in advance of the 2020 general election. \n\nThis project was initiated by MOCA Director Klaus Biesenbach and is organized by MOCA Senior Curator Bennett Simpson. \nThis installation of Barbara Kruger’s Untitled (Questions) is generously supported by an anonymous donor. \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\nONE MUSEUM. TWO LOCATIONS- Free Every Thursday\n\nWelcome to The Museum of Contemporary Art. With two distinct venues—MOCA Grand Avenue and The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA—and Michael Heizer’s seminal artwork Double Negative (1969-70) in the Nevada desert\, we engage audiences through an ambitious program of exhibitions\, educational programs\, and publishing. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWelcome to The Museum of Contemporary Art\, Los Angeles\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe are contemporary.\nWe question and adapt to the changing definitions of art. \n  \nWe are a museum.\nWe present\, collect\, and interpret the art of our time. \n  \nWe care\nfor the experience of art\, the inevitability of change\, the multiplicity of perspectives\, the urgency of contemporary expression. \n\nWith 2 distinct venues in Los Angeles\n\nMOCA Grand Avenue\n250 South Grand Avenue\nLos Angeles\, CA 90012 \nArchitect Arata Isozaki designed MOCA Grand Avenue in 1986 with classical architecture and Los Angeles popular culture in mind. The land art movement first appeared in the late 1960s and served to challenge the location\, material\, size\, and temporal existence of a work of art. Double Negative consists of two long straight trenches\, 30 feet wide and 50 feet deep\, cut into the “tabletop” of Mormon Mesa\, displacing 240\,000 tons of desert sandstone. The cuts face each other across an indentation in the plateaus’ scalloped perimeter\, forming a continuous image\, a thick linear volume that bridges and combines the “negative” space between them. \nmore info at: Double Negative \n\nAdmission to Double Negative by artist Michael Heizer is always free.\n\nHours\nMonday: 11:00 a.m.-6:00p.m.\nTuesday: Closed\nWednesday: 11:00 a.m.-6:00p.m.\nThursday: 11:00 a.m.-8:00p.m.\nFriday: 11:00 a.m.-6:00p.m.\nSaturday – Sunday: 11:00 a.m.-5:00p.m. \n  \nGeneral Admission: Free\nSpecial exhibitions: $18\nMembers: Free\nChildren under 12: Free\nSeniors and students: $10 \nSpecial exhibitions are free every Thursday\, 5-8pm.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nwww.moca.org\n \n  \n\n\nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n  \n
