DESCRIPTION:NOW ONLINE- Fowler Museum at UCLA\nThe Fowler Museum hold one of the largest and finest of African Art in the United States\, and one of the top twenty African collections worldwide. This collection offers a superb representation of the arts of many African nations\, including objects from Senegal\, Nigeria\, Ghana\, Cameroon\, Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire)\, Kenya\, Zambia\, and South Africa. The Yoruba collection alone is one of the three finest in the world. It contains a spectacular array of beaded objects\, including a majestic throne\, elaborate chiefly gowns\, and sophisticated divination regalia. \n \nA collection of post-apartheid election materials and contemporary South African art is being developed\, as are a number of collections of popular urban arts from countries including Tanzania and Muslim Senegal. Recently\, more than 400 textiles made by the Kuba peoples of the Democratic Republic of the Congo were gifted by the Christensen Foundation. \n \nThe collection represents some of the finest examples of men’s embroidered raffia pile cloths and women’s appliqué cloths. This collection complements already significant holdings of West African textiles from countries such as Mali and Ghana\, including kente and adinkra cloth and Asafo flags. Every evening the Kibitz Room is jamming with local bands and has become something of a Los Angeles scene. \nBack in the 60’s\, bands like The Doors and The Byrds along with Frank Zappa and Arthur Lee would meet at Canter’s to exchange stories\, girlfriends and eat. By the 90’s informal star-studded jam sessions began taking place in the Kibitz Room on Tuesday nights where groups would schmooze\, and kibbitz. Many\, including Joni Mitchell\, Rick James\, Slash and members of Guns N’ Roses\, The Wallflowers\, and members of the Red Hot Chili Peppers\, have come to the Kibitz Room to hang out\, sing\, play\, and most importantly to eat and drink. Come run with us. \n48 for Change\nWith the combination of a global pandemic and civil unrest around racial injustice\, June of 2020 set the stage for important societal and human issues to finally come to light in a more permanent way. This was the same time that two friends\, Justin and Tyler\, decided they wanted to take action to make a difference in the injustices and inequality we see in our communities. \n  \n\n\n\nThe week of George Floyd’s passing\, Justin called Tyler voicing his frustration from Floyd’s murder and subsequent reactions\, and they joined forces to do a running challenge that very weekend that entailed running 4 miles every 4 hours for 48 hours. A GoFundMe was set up to collect funds from friends and family throughout the running challenge to donate to help support racial justice. \nWhat started as a way to take the mind off of the pressure cooker of injustice resulted in a massively successful and attention-grabbing fundraiser\, and eventually turned into a 501(c)3 nonprofit\, still strong and growing today: 48 For Change. \nAside from fundraising and donating\, Justin found that the community that gathered to run that weekend was something special\, and needed its own spotlight. A place where anyone can come and simply run with a group of good people. The four sculptures are currently situated in an exterior landscaped setting that Graham’s son\, Steven Graham\, consulted on as part of the renovation at Wells Fargo Center. \n  \n \nRobert Graham\, was a Mexican born sculptor\, and although you may not be familiar with his name\, you probably ARE familiar with some of his work. Graham’s monumental bronzes commemorate the human figure\, and are featured in 11 public places in and around the city of Angels. If any symptoms are present\,\nyou may not enter the facility.\nThough there is not a mask mandate for the outdoor areas of the garden\, there is one for entering buildings (including restrooms) on City property.\nMaintain social distancing of 6 ft. from non-household members while on City property.\n\nPlease note that in case of significant rain within 24 hours of your scheduled visit time The Garden will be closed.\nYou should email the “contact the event organizer” link the day of your visit if rain occurs to verify.\nIn addition\, all regular Garden visiting rules (see “Garden Etiquette”) apply during your time slot.
