SUMMARY:50 Years of Water Color
DESCRIPTION:ON EXHIBIT – Santa Monica\nVisit California Heritage Museum as they exhibit 53 paintings by outstanding artists who were members of the California Water Color Society during its first fifty years! The exhibit will run from July 9 – October 30. \n \nCALIFORNIA WATERCOLOR SOCIETY THE FIRST 50 YEARS (1921-1971)\n\nOne hundred years ago a small group of Southern California artists formed the California Water Color Society and held their first exhibition at the Los Angeles Museum of History\, Science and Art. (The spelling at the time was “Water Color”. – two words – Which was common usage in the 1920s.) The founding members were all established\, professional artists. Artists in the exhibition include Marion Kavanaugh Wachtel\, Phil Dike\, Millard Sheets\, Phil Paradise\, Emil Kosa Jr.\, Edward Reep\, Ralph Hulett\, Wayne La Com\, Milford Zornes\, and Rex Brandt among others. Their stated goal in forming the CWCS was to elevate the watercolor medium “to the dignity it enjoyed under such great cultures as those of China and Persia”. \nFREE ADMISSION EVERY FRIDAY\nDuring the first 50 years this organization was in operation\, it was known as the California Water Color Society. After 1971 when larger numbers of artists from other parts of America joined the CWCS\, the board and members chose to change the society’s name to the National Watercolor Society. That name is used to this day to identify society. \nThis exhibition has been mounted to present select watercolors by outstanding artists who were members between 1921 and 1971 when the organization was known as the California Water Color Society. Many of the artists were either on the Board of Directors or served as jurors for society exhibitions during that fifty-year period of time. \n \nThe goal of this exhibition is to visually confirm the CWCS artists from that fifty-year period of time indeed succeeded in establishing Southern California as a center for the advancement of the watercolor medium; just as the founding members had hoped for when they formed the organization in 1921. This exhibition was curated by Gordon T. McClelland for the Hilbert Museum of California Art at Chapman University\, the originating exhibition site. \n\n \n2612 Main Street\, Santa Monica CA 90405 \nCALIFORNIA HERITAGE MUSEUM\nThe building that houses the California Heritage Museum is the Roy Jones House and is as interesting and unique as the exhibits themselves. \n \nIn the late 19th Century\, renowned architect Sumner P. Hunt built the home for Roy Jones\, son of the founder of Santa Monica Senator\, John Percival Jones. City Trustees granted Jones a permit to dig a cesspool on April 16\, 1894\, marking the first step taken in the construction of the house. One of Sumner P. Hunt’s earliest surviving buildings\, the Roy Jones home is designed in a style that transitions between the elaborate Victorian Queen Anne Revival to the more simple American Colonial or Georgian Revival. \n   \nThe beauty and grace of the first buildings were documented in the 1894 May publication of ‘Outlook’: “Five new residences\, ranging in cost from $3\,000 to $5\,000\, are now in the course of construction in Santa Monica. Those of Messrs. Roy Jones and Kennelly\, on Ocean Avenue\, is about completed. They are all handsome structures\, and show that there is to be no deterioration in architectural styles in our growing city by the sea.” The June 30\, 1894 edition further reinforced this appreciation: “Sumner P. Hunt\, architect\, of Los Angeles\, had made his ‘imprint’ upon this town in a pleasant way that is not excelled by anyone who has ever ‘struck’ it. He designed the residence of Mr. Roy Jones. They are all neat\, slightly edifices\, and are a gratifying step in advancing the style of our architecture.”  \n \nThe permanent exhibition at the museum includes photographs of the extraordinary move to Main Street\, the Jones family\, and an Ostrich Farm that made up a great deal of Ocean Park in 1893.\n \nThe California Heritage Museum is committed to promoting the diversity and rich history of California’s heritage through exhibitions\, lectures\, publications\, and community events. \n\nADMISSION\n\n\nGeneral Admission: $10.00    \nSeniors & Students: $5.00 \nMembers & children under 12: Free \nMilitary and Veterans: Free \n\n\n\nGROUP TOURS\nThe Museum welcomes visitors of all ages\, however\, to allow everyone to get the most from their visit\, special school and group tours are by appointment only. \n\nMuseum Hours\nMonday: Closed\nTuesday: 6:00pm – 9:00pm in conjunction with food trucks\nWednesday – Sunday: 11:00am – 4:00pm\, Last Tour at 3:30pm \n\nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \ncaliforniaheritagemuseum.org\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

The Broad is home to 2\,000 works of art in the Broad collection\, which is one of the world’s leading collections of postwar and contemporary art. \n  \n \nThe Broad from Home\nThe Broad is committed to inspiring and fostering an appreciation of contemporary art through our digital initiatives. Experience #TheBroadFromHome to find inspiration through music\, poetry\, performance\, workshops\, and conversations centered around the Broad collection. \nOverview \nPerformances \nTalks & Conversations \nArtist Spotlight \nFamily Art Workshops \nMore Online Programs \n  \nThe Broad Collection\nEli and Edythe Broad have been building their collection of postwar and contemporary art over the last 50 years. With a belief that the greatest art collections are built when the art is being made\, the Broads took to collecting art of their own time. \nThe Broad is home to 2\,000 works in the Broad collection by more than 200 artists\, and is one of the world’s leading collections of postwar and contemporary art. The collection features in-depth holdings of influential contemporary artists such as Jean-Michel Basquiat\, Mark Bradford\, Jasper Johns\, Jeff Koons\, Barbara Kruger\, Yayoi Kusama\, Kerry James Marshall\, Julie Mehretu\, Takashi Murakami\, Robert Rauschenberg\, Ed Ruscha\, Cindy Sherman\, Cy Twombly\, Andy Warhol\, and more\, plus an ever-growing representation of younger artists. \n  \nView Our Collection Here\n \nIn Under the Table\, 1994\, the viewer is both in the world of imaginary giants and in the world of remembered childhood. Fusing Alice in Wonderland with the Duchampian tradition of the readymade\, Artist Robert Therrien constructs a doppelganger from an everyday object\, both displaying his visual wit and actualizing literary or imaginative fantasy in three-dimensional space. The table exudes an extraordinary aura\, compelling one to walk underneath the table and conjuring the physical memory of being under the table of one’s childhood home. Complicated and powerful\, the work offers fresh ideas of what a table\, sculpture\, and memory can mean. \n  \n  \n \nUsing the recognizable form of a balloon twisted into the shape of a dog\, Koons has frozen a moment in time\, exaggerating both scale and material. \nBalloon Dog (Blue) is literal and abstract. When standing close to it\, one’s own distorted reflection bends around smooth pert curves. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\nGeneral Admission is Free\nAll visitors must reserve timed tickets in advance. Some exhibitions and events carry a separate charge. \n\n\n\n\n\nHours\nMonday: Closed\nTuesday – Wednesday: 11:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.\nThursday – Friday: 11:00 a.m.-8:00 p.m.\nSaturday: 10:00 a.m.-8:00p.m.\nSunday: 10:00 a.m.-6:00p.m. \n\n\n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nhttps://www.thebroad.org/visit/mirror-rooms\n \n  \nFind more

SUMMARY:Hammer Museum Free Screening: Passing Through
DESCRIPTION:TONIGHT- The Hammer Museum\nThe Hammer Museum and the UCLA Film & Television Archive present a free screening of \n\nPassing Through\nFRI AUG 26\, 7:30 PM\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPart of the UCLA Film & Television Archive series about filmmaker Larry Clark. \nRegister at cinema.ucla.edu to attend this in-theater screening.\n  \nIn-person: Filmmaker Larry Clark. \n\n\n\n\n\nPASSING THROUGH\n\nU.S.\, 1977 \nFrequently hailed as one of the best jazz movies ever made\, Passing Through opens with what may be the most exciting seven minutes in American cinema as a jazz ensemble riffing through a series of improvisations fuses into an abstract collage of color\, sound and movement. What follows is both an homage—Larry Clark dedicates the film to “Hebert Baker and other Black Musicians known and unknown”—and a setting straight through the story of Womack (Nathaniel Taylor)\, a saxophonist who returns home from a prison stint to reconnect with his mentor and grandfather\, a legendary musician and pick up the pieces of his life. Sent up for defending a fellow Black musician from white gangsters who control the music industry through violence\, Womack again finds himself fighting for the right to create on his own terms. With an astonishing score composed by Horace Tapscott and performed by The Pan Afrikan People’s Arkestra\, Passing Through celebrates—and\, indeed\, embodies—Black artistry while exposing the racist historical forces aligned to exploit it. \n35mm\, color\, 111 min. From the earliest silent films requiring variable speed projection all the way up to cutting-edge digital cinema\, the Wilder can accommodate an array of screen technologies. \n \nThe theater’s modern design by Michael Maltzan Architecture stylishly interprets cinema’s play of light and movement in real space\, and the 285-seat interior features comfortable leather seats with superb sightlines. The theater is made possible by a generous gift from Audrey L. Wilder and named in honor of Mrs. Wilder’s late husband\, the legendary screenwriter\, director and producer. Born on the outskirts of the Austro-Hungarian empire\, Billy Wilder fled Nazi Germany in the 1930s to become a master of Hollywood film language and a shrewd comic observer of the American scene. Among the many classics Wilder co-wrote and directed were Double Indemnity (1944)\, Sunset Boulevard (1950) and Some Like It Hot (1959). \n\nPlease note that food is not permitted inside the theater. There are dining options in the surrounding Westwood Village. You may also opt to bring your own food and eat in the courtyard just outside the theater. \n \n\nThe Hammer Museum champions the art and artists who challenge us to see the world in a new light\, to experience the unexpected\, to ignite our imaginations\, and inspire change. \nThe Hammer understands that art not only has the power to transport us through aesthetic experience but can also provide significant insight into some of the most pressing cultural\, political\, and social questions of our time. We share the unique and invaluable perspectives that artists have on the world around us. \nA vibrant intellectual and creative nexus\, the Hammer is fueled by dynamic exhibitions and programs—including lectures\, symposia\, film series\, readings\, and musical performances—that spark meaningful encounters with art and ideas. \nAnd through our unwavering commitment to free admission and free public programs\, the Hammer Museum is open for all and FREE FOR GOOD.\n  \nHours\nMonday: Closed\nTuesday – Sunday: 11:00am – 6:00pm \n\nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nhttps://www.cinema.ucla.edu/calendar\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Net Cruze Coffee and Cars
DESCRIPTION:Net Cruze Cars And Coffee- Westchester\, California\nNet Cruze Cars And Coffee events have been going for decades.  And that was news to me upon my first stop in mid-August. \nBut they’re in a new location.  And it’s kind of tricky in that it’s a huge parking lot behind the 99-cents store in Westchester.  Further\, this is a cool event worth checking out for sure. \nSo cars from the ’30s through ’50s are pretty well represented.  And that’s both originals and customs.  Then\, when I was there\, there was a Corvette Club represented too.  All newer C7s but nicely done as well. \nBut everyone and everything is welcome.  For instance\, there was an older Bronco\, a newer Porsche\, and even a Studebaker on hand. \nAdditionally\, the organizers offered coffee and pastries.  Plus a raffle drawing toward the end that kept everyone on hand for cash prizes\, gas cards\, and even handbags for the ladies. \n\n \n1939 Buick \n\nNet Cruze Cars And Coffee – Westchester\, California\nLocation: 6835 La Tijera Blvd.\nAdmission: Free\nVehicle registration: Free \n  \nHours\n2nd and 4th Saturdays: 9:00am – 12:00pm \n\n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nhttps://www.idrivesocal.com\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

Like monuments and national anthems\, they intend to create a sense of identity-based on a shared past\, present\, and future. \nLike many other governments\, the communist countries of the twentieth century produced an abundance of flags and banners. They were omnipresent at military parades\, sports events\, and public gatherings. Apart from national flags\, many organizations produced their own richly decorated flags and banners. The Wende Museum holds over 2\,000 of these ornamental textiles in its collection. \nMartin Roemers: Relics of the Cold War\n \nDuring an eleven-year period\, from 1998 through 2009\, Dutch photographer Martin Roemers photographed the structural and topographic remnants of the Cold War in both the East and West. His research took him to Russia\, Poland\, Czech Republic\, Ukraine\, Latvia\, Lithuania\, Great Britain\, Netherlands\, Belgium\, and Germany\, where he documented underground tunnels\, abandoned army bases\, military training areas\, rotting tanks\, and destroyed monuments. \nLight–guard–house: Installation by Farrah Karapetian\n \nThe 20-square-foot aluminum guardhouse that sat outside the ADN headquarters in East Berlin from 1971–92 is both an artifact of an atmosphere of mistrust and representative of past and current political protectionism. Artist Farrah Karapetian will turn this structure into a lighthouse\, changing a gesture of suspicion into a gesture of welcome. The windows of the guardhouse will be tinted in a rainbow gradient encompassing all of the colors potentially included in national flags. Over the course of Wende’s concurrent exhibition\, The Medium is the Message: Flags and Banners\, Karapetian will engage with the public about experiences they have had as migrants. As the stories accumulate and become available on the museum’s website\, the light inside the lighthouse will pause at the various colors associated with the flags of the respective national borders crossed. Rather than the finality of immigration\, the artist’s focus is the prevalence of migration\, asking visitors: What experiences of welcome or mistrust have occurred as you have moved internationally? How have they colored your life in their wake? \n\n \n10808 Culver Blvd.\, Culver City\, CA 90230 \n \nThe Wende is an art museum\, historical archive of the Cold War\, and center for creative community engagement that explores and inspires change.  \nThe Wende reaches beyond the conventional walls of a museum and places equal value on an international scholarship\, community engagement\, digital access\, and wide-ranging experimentation. \nWende is a German word meaning “turning point” or “change” that has come to describe the transformative period around the fall of the Berlin Wall. Founded in 2002\, the Wende Museum holds an unparalleled collection of art and artifacts from the Cold War era\, which serves as a foundation for programs that illuminate political and cultural changes of the past\, offer opportunities to make sense of a  changing present\, and inspire active participation in personal and social change for a better future. \nThe Wende fulfills its mission of exploring and inspiring change through \n\ncollecting\, preserving\, and providing open access to artwork\, artifacts\, archives\, films\, and personal histories from the sphere touched by socialism during the Cold War era (1945– 1991);\npromoting rigorous scholarship\, educating students\, and stimulating general interest through lectures\, symposia\, publications\, and providing access to digitized collections;\npresenting experimental exhibitions and interdisciplinary programming inspired by the collection;\nfacilitating creative collaborations with contemporary artists and designers;\npartnering with other nonprofit organizations; and\nproviding community services such as wellness programs\, opportunities for civic engagement\, and family-friendly activities.\n\nCore Strengths\n\n\nThe Wende Museum’s collection and intellectual activities have achieved notable strength in four areas of specialization: German Democratic Republic; Wende Moments; Personal Histories and Everyday Life; and Public and Private Interaction. \n\nHours\nMonday – Thursday: Closed\nFriday – Sunday: 10:00am – 5:00pm \n\n\n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nwww.wendemuseum.org\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

The Forest Lawn Museum first opened in 1952 and is located adjacent to the Hall of Crucifixion-Resurrection at Forest Lawn – Glendale.  Forest Lawn’s founder\, Dr. Hubert Eaton\, wrote in his Builder’s Creed that our park should be “a place where artists study and sketch; where school teachers bring happy children to see the things they read of in books.” In that spirit\, the Forest Lawn Museum displays a permanent collection\, as well as world-class rotating exhibits. With engaging special exhibits and free educational and artistic activities\, there is always something new to experience. \n \nForest Lawn Museum is located within Forest Lawn-Glendale (1712 S. The building now has 11 terraces\, dozens of sculptures\, and more than 100 stained glass windows. It has endured through the Great Depression\, World War II\, and into the 21st century. Even in the difficult times that we’re currently experiencing\, we look forward to another hundred years of history with the Great Mausoleum. \n\n \n1712 S Glendale Ave.\, Glendale\, CA 91205 \nSince our founding\, Forest Lawn has committed itself to providing outstanding service and beautiful environments for family outings\, remembering loved ones\, and commemorating holidays. SUMMARY:THIS IS NOT AMERICA'S FLAG
DESCRIPTION:SPECIAL EXHIBITION AT THE BROAD: MAY 21 – SEPTEMBER 25\, 2022\nFeaturing over twenty artists\, the special exhibition This Is Not America’s Flag spotlights the myriad ways artists explore the symbol of the flag of the United States of America\, underscoring its vast\, divergent\, and complex meanings. \nTitled after Alfredo Jaar’s iconic 1987 work\, A Logo for America\, This Is Not America’s Flag provides a critical discourse on the symbol’s meaning\, the complexity and contradictions of contemporary national identity\, and artists as active citizens. \nThe exhibition was developed conceptually in the summer of 2020 during the groundswell of activism for racial justice in the wake of the murders of George Floyd\, Ahmaud Arbery\, and Breonna Taylor and was inspired by two works in the Broad collection\, Flag (1967) by Jasper Johns and African-American Flag (1990) by David Hammons. \nThis Is Not America’s Flag presents works from over twenty artists including Laura Aguilar\, Nicole Eisenman\, Jeffrey Gibson\, Jaar\, and Johns\, as well as African-American Flag (1990) by Hammons acquired by The Broad in 2019 and America (2021) by Hank Willis Thomas\, acquired last year. The exhibition includes works that both embrace the flag as the signifier of the nation and its ideals and subvert it to express injustices and inequities woven into the fabric of the U.S.\, past\, and present. \n\nHighlighted Artwork\nAmerica\nHank Willis Thomas\n2021\nMixed media including US flags\n \n  \nAfrican-American Flag\n\nDavid Hammons\n\n\n1990\n\n\ndyed cotton\n\n\n59 x 92 1/4 in.
