DESCRIPTION:EVERY THURSDAY 12:30–1:00PM- Online via ZOOM. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWould you like to learn how to meditate? Join the Hammer Museum each Thursday for Mindful Awareness Meditation Online. Mindfulness Meditation is the moment-by-moment process of actively and openly observing one’s physical\, mental\, and emotional experiences. Mindfulness has scientific support as a means to reduce stress\, improve attention\, boost the immune system\, reduce emotional reactivity\, and promote a general sense of health and well-being. These half hour weekly sessions are open to all who are interested in learning how to live more presently in life. No special clothing is required\, and participants are welcome to join for five minutes or enjoy the entire 30 minutes.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThese free weekly drop-in sessions usually take place in the Hammer’s Billy Wilder Theater but are now offered live online via Zoom. \nMindful Awareness Meditation is provided by UCLA & The Hammer Museum\n  \nff \n\nSessions are led by Diana Winston and other instructors from the UCLA Mindful Awareness Research Center. DESCRIPTION:FREE EVERYDAY AFTER 3PM- Mid Wilshire District\n\n\n\nLACMA presents Black American Portraits. Remembering Two Centuries of Black American Art\, guest curated by David Driskell at LACMA 45 years ago\, this exhibition reframes portraiture to center Black American subjects\, sitters\, and spaces. \n \nSpanning over two centuries from c. 1800 to the present day\, this selection of approximately 140 works draws primarily from LACMA’s permanent collection and highlights emancipation and early studio photography\, scenes from the Harlem Renaissance\, portraits from the Civil Rights and Black Power eras\, and multiculturalism of the 1990s. \n \nBlack American Portraits chronicles the ways in which Black Americans have used portraiture to envision themselves in their own eyes. Wichner’s gift of 61 works by European Modernists changed the course of the Museum’s future\, expanding the collection from one of regional-focus\, to one enhanced by international perspectives. Wichner moved to Los Angeles from the East coast upon completing his law degree from Harvard University in 1936. Between the film industry\, the oil boom \,and an influx of Europeans fleeing Nazi Germany\, Los Angeles saw a period of tremendous growth\, accompanied by the convergence of different cultures and aesthetics. During this time\, Wichner met Galka Scheyer who represented a group of contemporary artists\, she named Blaue Vier (Blue Four): Alexej Jawlensky\, Vasily Kandinsky\, Lyonel Feininger\, and Paul Klee. This exhibition showcases the works of two of the Blue Four artists\, Alexej Jawlensky and Vasily Kandinsky\, curated from the Wichner Collection. The Milton Wichner Collection entrusted to the Museum\, lives on to perpetuate the memory of this benefactor\, and serve as a reflection of his passion and esteem for European abstraction. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGenie Shenk: Ring\nOngoing\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nConstructed of folded building paper with internal armature\, Ring began as a study of spiral motion between concentric circles in 1989. Genie Shenk became interested in the spiral as a means of increment from one circle to another and found this relationship could be defined three-dimensionally with the intersection of two isometric circular forms. DESCRIPTION:EVERY DAY ’til MIDNIGHT- Dockweiler State Beach\nThe Dockweiler Beach Fire Pits are located about 3 miles south of Playa del Rey\, this inviting beach features 3 miles of shoreline\, an RV park\, and over 2\,000 regular vehicle parking spaces. The wide sandy beach lies beneath the departures flight path of LAX\, offering fantastic belly views of airlines headed out over the Pacific. The lot entrance is at Vista del Mar and Imperial Highway. \n\n\nFIRE PITS RULES\n\n\n\n\n\nAny grills or BBQs must fit inside the fire pit\, which is 2′ wide. No grills\, grilling\, or flames or fires on the sand.\nTo use the fire pits\, you bring your own charcoal or wood and a way to light them.\nPlease do not use sand to put out the fire.\nHelp keep our beaches clean by preventing ashes or debris from falling into the sand.\n\n  \n\n\n\nThere’s no better way to end a fun day at the beach than to circle up around a cozy bonfire. Not all California beaches allow bonfires\, but here in the Marina del Rey area\, we’re lucky that Dockweiler State Beach does permit regulated burns in provided fire rings. Follow these tips to ensure your group has an enjoyable time. \n\nIf you want a pit\, arrive early. From May through September\, the pits are in high demand\, especially on the weekends\, and there are some diehards who arrive at dawn to claim their spots for the entire day. You cannot reserve fire pits as you would a campsite. Do not leave your pit unattended\, even for a quick dip in the ocean – if you do\, don’t be surprised to find another group has taken over the site. There are between 60 – 80 fire pits located just north and south of where Vista del Mar intersects with Imperial Highway. That sounds like a lot\, but consider that Dockweiler is also home to an RV park\, and you’re all competing for space.\nBring everything you need – wood\, s’mores\, snacks\, et cetera (see “Your Packing List” below).\nThe beach and all amenities close at midnight.\nBefore you leave\, snuff out the flame with water. Stir the embers after they are covered with water and make sure that everything is saturated. Do not use sand to distinguish the fire\, as it creates a mess for the next guest.\n\n \nYOUR PACKING LIST\n\nWood and charcoal (wood for that nice bonfire and charcoal for cooking – see below about barbecue rules). Both can be purchased at Ralph’s grocery stores: 4700 Admiralty Way\, Marina del Rey; 8701 Lincoln Boulevard\, Playa del Rey. Only burn clean wood (nothing treated with paint\, chemicals\, etc.) in the pits.\nFire starter and a lighter. You can purchase kindling from most any grocery\, home supply\, or sporting-goods store. Or\, prepare your own starter with this old-school camping craft: Fill a cardboard egg carton with dryer lint\, wood shavings\, paper shreds\, or other ignitable materials. Pour a small amount of melted candle wax into each cup to make things stay put. Break off cups individually and place into your wood stack. Light the cardboard cups and watch how easy your fire takes off – even in the wind.\nIf barbecuing\, note that large stand-up barbeques are NOT allowed on the sand or in the parking lots. However\, you can bring a low-profile version and place it inside the fire ring.\nLong-handle grilling sticks. These are great for cooking hot dogs and kabobs and roasting marshmallows.\nHot glove or mitt. Don’t ruin your night with a burn from handling hot wood\, pots\, or grills. Items like the Ove Glove offer protection while still allowing dexterity.\nFood! Doubt you’ll forget this\, but you may want a separate checklist so that you remember all the elements for your meal. It’s easy to overlook things like serving spoons\, plastic utensils\, salt and pepper\, napkins or wet wipes\, and containers for leftovers. Paper plates are great for cookouts since they’re ok to burn in the fire afterward.\nCamp/beach table. Depending on the size of your group\, you may prefer to set up your dinner fixings buffet style on a simple folding table. Whatever you bring\, remember that you’ll need to carry it across the sand to the pit and back to the parking lot at the end of your evening. So only take what you really need.\nYou’ll want a beverage cooler with ice\, especially if you heed our warning and arrive early in the day to claim your spot. A bag to hold discarded recyclables is a good idea\, too.\nComfort items. Ask each person in your group to bring his or her own beach chair or picnic blanket. DESCRIPTION:OPEN DAILY 10am – 5pm- Beverly Hills\nThe historic Greystone Mansion and Gardens is owned by the City of Beverly Hills and is operated through the Department of Community Services – Recreation and Parks Division.​ \nGreystone Mansion\, and the surrounding grounds it shares its magnificent beauty with\, are rich in California history. Edward Laurence Doheny\, the original proprietor of the Greystone land\, was born in 1856 in the small Midwestern town of Fond du Lac\, Wisconsin. By the time he was a young teen\, Doheny’s adventuresome spirit and love of the wilderness led him to prospecting for gold and soon thereafter\, oil. In 1892\, Doheny and his friend Charles A. Canfield\, were the first to strike oil in Los Angeles. They later discovered large oil deposits in Mexico which\, combined with their Los Angeles holdings\, made them the largest producers of oil in the world at that time. \n \nEdward Doheny and his wife Carrie Louella Wilkins had two children. Their first\, a daughter Eileen\, passed away when she was just seven years old. On November 6\, 1893\, their only son\, Edward “Ned” Laurence Doheny\, Jr.\, was born and grew up as heir to one of the world’s great financial empires. DESCRIPTION:OPEN YEAR ROUND- Griffith Park\nThe Trail to Amir’s Garden is a 1.1 mile heavily trafficked loop trail located LA’s Griffith Park. This shady rest stop and memorial garden features beautiful wild flowers and water-bearing\, fire-resistive succulents interspersed with natives and memorial trees and plants. The trail is primarily used for hiking\, walking\, running\, nature trips\, and horses and is accessible year-round. It is rated as moderately difficult trail. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash. \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe gardens are cared for by official volunteers since its creation in 1971. Amir’s Garden is considered a rest stop and not a dedicated picnic area\, therefore it can’t be reserved for events. The nearest restrooms are located at Mineral Wells Picnic Area. Activities related to the care of a large garden may be taking place at any time\, including watering. Amir’s Garden is a most pleasant place for a hike-in picnic\, with a selection of picnic tables.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe History of Amir’s Garden\nAmir Dialameh worked a steep hill in Griffith Park for than three decades with a pick and shovel and turned a scorched\, barren landscape into a lush\, shaded grove that is visited daily by a steady stream of hikers and horseback riders. \nFor thirty-two years\, Dialameh worked in the garden most days of the week\, hiking up a service road to the rugged Mineral Wells location. Over the years\, he planted pine and jacaranda trees along with rose bushes\, geraniums\, oleander\, and yucca that grew into the beautiful oasis it is today. \n“…what you need first and foremost here is shade\,” Dialameh explained in 1989. “That’s why I planted trees like the jacaranda. In ten years\, this place will be covered with their branches.” \nHis words were prophetic. Today Amir’s Garden is nearly five-acres of shady rest stop for Griffith Park’s hikers and equestrians. \nDialameh first came to appreciate nature as a child during hiking trips in the Alborz Mountains of his native Iran. As his love of hiking and nature developed\, so did his affinity for the United States of America. \n“I was intrigued by the volunteerism that built this country… people doing things instead of relying on the government.” In 1963 while visiting his brother in Pittsburgh\, Dialameh made the ultimate decision to immigrate and moved to the Los Angeles area. \n\n\nGetting There\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe hike to Amir’s Garden actually begins near one of Griffith Park’s larger picnic areas\, Mineral Well Picnic Area. Find the dirt service road heading west from the intersection of Griffith Park Drive and Mineral Wells Road. \nWalk straight through an immediate junction and follow the dirt road on a southwestern climb to Amir’s Garden. After a horseshoe bend in the road\, and a quarter mile from the start\, you will pass a water tower that is accompanied by broad views stretching beyond Griffith Park toward Glendale\, the Verdugo Mountains\, and San Gabriel Mountains. \n \nLooking back down the trail\nAfter less than half a mile\, the trail arrives at Amir’s Garden where you’ll discover a pocket of tall sycamores arcing over a mountainside of verdant plants including succulents like ice plant and jade. There are a few picnic tables at the entrance of Amir’s Garden and others hidden throughout. \n  \n \nAmir’s Garden\n\nStroll through a web of footpaths and recharge your batteries in this refreshing Griffith Park retreat. With extra effort\, you may continue up North Trail toward Mount Hollywood\, Mount Bell and other peaks in Griffith Park. Otherwise\, return the way you came for a satisfying 1-mile round trip hike. No fee or permit is required to hike to Amir’s Garden and dogs are welcome.\n\nTo get to the trailhead: Take the 5 Freeway to the Los Feliz Boulevard exit. Drive west on Los Feliz Boulevard to the first light and turn north on Crystal Springs Road. After 1.5 miles\, turn left on Griffith Park Drive and drive 1.2 miles to the intersection with Mineral Wells Road. Turn left onto Mineral Wells Road and park immediately in the spaces along the road. Below these points are three separate coves with beaches and tide pools. \nAbalone Cove Park features 2 beaches (Abalone Cove and Sacred Cove)\, tide pools\, bluff top viewing areas and trails crisscrossing the area. The park contains a State Ecological Preserve and taking of protected animals and marine life is prohibited. There is direct access to a parking lot off Palos Verdes Drive South. Access to Abalone Cove Beach is by a long trail from the parking lot. To access Sacred Cove\, users must walk along Palos Verdes Drive South to 1 of 2 trails between Portuguese and Inspiration Points. Lifeguards are on duty at Abalone Cove Beach during summer hours and weekends only. The views of the ocean and Catalina Island are spectacular. Barbeques and fires are prohibited at this site. SUMMARY:Mount Wilson Observatory
DESCRIPTION:OPEN WEEKENDS- Mt Wilson\nMount Wilson Observatory is located on the summit of Mount Wilson above Pasadena at an altitude of 5715 feet. Mount Wilson Observatory is visible from much of the Los Angeles area. Free of charge\, this is a must see experience. \n  \n \n\n\nViewing through the 100-Inch Hooker Telescope\nThe world’s largest telescope from 1917 to 1949\, the 100-inch Telescope forever changed our understanding of the scale and nature of our Universe and launched a revolution in astronomy that continues through today. This world-heritage class instrument\, used by many of the greatest astronomers of the Twentieth Century\, has only recently been made available for regular public viewing. It is the largest telescope in the world that you can rent! Imagine looking through the telescope used by astronomers Edwin Hubble and Milton Humason in the late 1920s to measure the expansion of the Universe. \n\n  \n \nThe 60 inch Telescope\nMount Wilson Observatory’s 60-inch telescope was completed in 1908 by Observatory founder George Ellery Hale with funding from Andrew Carnegie. It was the world’s largest operational telescope until Hale went on to complete the Mt. Wilson 100-inch telescope in 1917. For a more detailed history of this revolutionary instrument\, which became the model for all large observatory telescopes of the future\, see the article “Building the 60-inch Telescope.” Among the many important discoveries from the 60-inch telescope was Harlow Shapley’s revelation in 1918 that the accepted view of the time\, that our Sun was near the center of the Milky Way Galaxy\, was wrong. Shapley used the light gathering power of the 60-inch to show that our solar system is instead half way out toward the edge of our Galaxy. The telescope was a workhorse instrument for astronomy for over half a century and used by astronomical luminaries such as Edwin Hubble\, Walter Baade\, and Allan Sandage to unravel the secrets of stars and galaxies. Now retired from active scientific service\, the 60-inch and the 100-inch telescopes are the largest in the world made exclusively available to the public. With their large light-collecting mirrors and the exquisite skies over Mount Wilson\, these historic telescopes provide an unrivaled and unique astronomical experience. \n\n\n\n\n\nCHARA (Center for High Angular Resolution Astronomy)\nMount Wilson’s newest astronomical instruments are Georgia State University’s optical interferometric array of six telescopes. This facility\, located here because of the exceptional seeing conditions\, puts Mount Wilson back on the cutting edge of astrophysics. The full array was completed in 2004. Each telescope of the CHARA Array has a light-collecting mirror 1-meter in diameter. The telescopes are dispersed over the mountain to provide a two-dimensional layout that provides the resolving capability (but not the light collecting ability!) of a single telescope a fifth of a mile in diameter. Light from the individual telescopes is conveyed through vacuum tubes to a central Beam Synthesis Facility in which the six beams are combined together. When the paths of the individual beams are matched to an accuracy of less than one micron\, after the light traverses distances of hundreds of meters\, the Array then acts like a single coherent telescope for the purposes of achieving exceptionally high angular resolution. The Array is capable of resolving details as small as 200 micro-arcseconds\, equivalent to the angular size of a nickel seen from a distance of 10\,000 miles. In terms of the number and size of its individual telescopes\, its ability to operate at visible and near infrared wavelengths\, and its longest baselines of 330 meters\, the CHARA Array is arguably the most powerful instrument of its kind in the world. \nScience Objectives\nThe Array is applicable to problems in almost all areas of contemporary astronomy. It is particularly suited to stellar astrophysics where it will be used to measure the diameters\, distances\, masses\, and luminosities of stars\, as well as to image features such as spots and flares on their surfaces. Other projects range from detecting planetary systems\, imaging stars in process of formation\, and studies of bright transient phenomena like novae. \nFor more information on this amazing research facility and the science that is emerging from it\, please go to the CHARA array homepage. There you can find a video\, Sizing up the Stars\, that explains how interferometry works. \n\n\n\n \nAstronomical Museum\nAlso on the mountain\, next to the 100-inch telescope\, there is a new exhibit hall that displays Albert Michelson’s original interferometer\, used to get the first measurement of stars other than our Sun.  The exhibit hall reveals in detail how the light is combined in the new CHARA area. \nWeekend Public Guided Tours\n\n\n\n\n\nDocent-led walking tours of the observatory take place on Saturdays and Sundays through November 29. The two hour tours depart at 11:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. sharp from the Cosmic Cafe located above the large parking lot at the entrance to the Observatory. A special feature of these tours is entrance into both the 60-inch and 100-inch telescope domes\, as well as the observing room of the 150-foot Solar Tower Telescope.  On rare occasions\, a telescope may be closed to the tour due to a special event or maintenance. \n\n\nPurchasing Tickets \nTickets are $15 (adults) and $13 (ages 12 and under & 62 and older). Tour tickets are available for same-day purchase at the Cosmic Café\, and rarely sell out. For each tour\, 15 spots are available. \nIf you have a large group\, we urge you to opt for a private tour instead. These can be arranged by sending an email request to tours@mtwilson.edu. \nChildren under age 6 are not permitted. The tours involve about a mile of walking and climbing some stairs. Please read the Health Notice in the information tab. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPrivate Group Tours\nPrivate guided tours may be arranged by individuals or groups in advance. Written by Hal McAlister\, the second director of the Mount Wilson Institute and founder of CHARA\, it is a well-illustrated guide to all the points of interest on the mountaintop. \n\n\n\n\nElevation Warning\nThe high elevation of the Observatory (5715 ft) and the change in elevation during the approximately one-mile and two-hour long tour are unsuitable for individuals with respiratory and heart problems or with limited mobility. \nThe century-old facilities are not ADA-compliant and\, except for the Astronomical Museum and the Cosmic Cafe\, offer no access to those who cannot climb multiple flights of stars. Thus\, tours of the Observatory\, either guided or unguided\, are inappropriate for some elderly people and for those who are not in good health. \nVisitors should take these factors into consideration before touring the Observatory. \n\n\n\nParking\n\n\n\nA U.S. Forest Service Adventure Pass is required to park at the Observatory\, as it is located on U.S. Forest Service land. A day pass may be purchased at the Cosmic Cafe (when it is open from April 4 to November 29 in 2020) on weekends between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Other times\, the $5 day pass or the $30 dollar annual pass may be purchased at many locations around Los Angeles before you head up.  Click here to go to the U.S. Forest Service website for more information about the Adventure Pass and where to buy them.
