The company which created the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket launch mounted the 156-foot-tall (47-meter) gigantic space machine on vertical display for its significant milestone and as a testament to the perseverance of its founder\, and chief engineer Elon Musk\, who wants to reduce the cost of colonizing Mars by developing a fleet of fully reusable spaceships. \n  \n \nThe rocket on display is the first SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket to land successfully after years of research and experiment\, during which the company switched from its initial plan to retrieve rockets with parachutes to a very thoughtful idea of involving multiple engine restarts\, landing legs\, and precision landing algorithms. \nSpaceX  Falcon 9 rocket successfully stage landed at Cape Canaveral after a Dec. 21 launch with 11 Orbcomm communications satellites on vertical display. The rocket is a jaw-dropping out-of-space scientific attraction visible to passersby on nearby streets and freeways. The rocket is located near the southeast corner of SpaceX headquarters at the intersection of Crenshaw Blvd. and Jack Northrop Ave. in Hawthorne\, California\, a suburb of Los Angeles. \n  \n \nThe historic masterpiece had to undergo thorough scrubbing and treatment to wash away soot residue it gathered from flying through its own exhaust\, before it was brought to Hawthorne for permanent exhibition in front of SpaceX’s main building with the help of two heavy-lifting cranes. \nSpaceX Falcon 9 rocket boosters that were recovered since its first mission are being put to use again and again as SpaceX has now flown a previously flown first stage on a satellite launch. DESCRIPTION:OPEN AGAIN 24/7- Santa Monica\nThe Santa Monica Stairs are actually two different stairways\, both of which descend from Santa Monica’s Adelaide Drive to Entrada Drive (Santa Monica Canyon). \n \nThe mis-named “7th Street stairway” has its upper end across from 526 Adelaide Drive\, and leads down to Entrada Drive\, across the street from Amalfi Drive. It consists of 152 wooden steps and 18 concrete steps in a straight path\, about 5.5 feet wide\, separated by three horizontal landings. Altogether the 170 steps produce an overall vertical change of about 110 feet. \n \n\n \nThe “4th-street stairway” begins at the intersection of 4th Street and Adelaide\, leading down to Ocean Avenue Extension. It consists solely of concrete flights interconnected by right- and left-hand turns. There are 189 steps producing an overall vertical change of about 115 feet. \n  \n \nOn the Pacific Palisades side of Santa Monica Canyon is the so-called “secret Mesa stairway”\, which is much less used although it has more steps than either of the above. The base is on Mesa Road\, next to 404 Mesa and about a 10-minute walk from West Channel Road. 201 concrete steps rise about 100 feet to the intersection of Upper Mesa Road and Amalfi Drive. There is no railing except for the topmost 18 steps\, so descending requires caution. (The stairs are sometimes incorrectly called the “La Mesa stairs”–La Mesa Drive is elsewhere in Santa Monica\, and there is a La Mesa Stairway in the city of La Mesa in San Diego County.) \nSeveral other lengthy staircases nearby descend from Palisades Park bluffs to overpasses crossing Pacific Coast Highway to the beach: \n  \n\nThe northernmost crossing near Montana Avenue has 172 steps with a vertical change from Palisades Park to the pedestrian path on the beach of about 110 feet.Separate ramps\, one from the vicinity of Idaho Ave and the other from the top of the California Incline\, converge and share the same bridge crossing to the beach\, with a vertical change of 105 feet from Idaho\, 100 from California. SUMMARY:UCLA Meteorite Collection
DESCRIPTION:FREE WEEKDAYS- UCLA Westwood Village\nThe UCLA Collection of Meteorites is the largest on the West Coast and contains over 2500 samples from about 1500 different meteorites. It is the fifth largest collection of meteorites in the United States and the second largest housed at a university. \n  \n \nOur collection includes the main masses of about 40 meteorites and the type specimens of more than 300 meteorites collected from hot deserts; 60 of these are iron meteorites. Eighty of these meteorite type specimens are from the state of California. These were collected by local citizens during the past few decades\, mainly from the playas (dry lakes) scattered around the Mojave Desert. \n  \n \nSome of our meteorites are large and well suited for exhibits (in fact\, some of them are exhibited at the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History). However\, most of the samples are small and mainly of value for research. \n  \n  \n \nThe study of meteorites and the processes that formed them is called cosmochemistry. The cosmochemists at UCLA are among the most productive university researchers in the world. It is thus appropriate that we have one of the best university meteorite collections. \n  \nWe are in the second year of operating a Meteorite Gallery\, located in room 3697 of the Geology Building. Opened in January 2014\, the Gallery is open to the public weekdays from 9 am to 4 pm. CLOSED WEEKENDS. Admission is always free. The current exhibits will gradually expand as funds and additional samples are obtained. DESCRIPTION:TRAILS & TIDE POOLING in Palos Verdes\nAbalone Cove Shoreline Park is a coastal tide pool treasure\, located at the tip of the Palos Verdes Peninsula. The park contains an ecological preserve and is famous for its outstanding tide pools. \nIt is worth checking tide charts to visit these beaches at low tide for the tide pools and the tunnels. \nDAILY TIDE CHARTS HERE\n  \n \nOut at the end and right at the base of the points there are amazing rock tunnels where waves rush in and crash through. \n  \nTrails meander on the bluff out to excellent views from two prominent points. Below these points are three separate coves with beaches and tide pools. \nAbalone Cove Park features 2 beaches (Abalone Cove and Sacred Cove)\, tide pools\, bluff top viewing areas and trails crisscrossing the area. The park contains a State Ecological Preserve and taking of protected animals and marine life is prohibited. There is direct access to a parking lot off Palos Verdes Drive South. Access to Abalone Cove Beach is by a long trail from the parking lot. To access Sacred Cove\, users must walk along Palos Verdes Drive South to 1 of 2 trails between Portuguese and Inspiration Points. Lifeguards are on duty at Abalone Cove Beach during summer hours and weekends only. The views of the ocean and Catalina Island are spectacular. Barbeques and fires are prohibited at this site. The Roundhouse has undergone a recent revitalization through a $4 million capital project spearheaded by the Harrison Greenberg Foundation. The new Roundhouse Aquarium educates and inspires more than 300\,000 visitors every year. It is managed and operated by the nonprofit oceanic and environmental organization Oceanographic Teaching Stations\, Inc. (OTS)\, whose mission is to connect and engage visitors and students to the oceans through hands-on interactive experiences with marine life and habitats of southern California\, and to inspire them to become good stewards of our environment. \nOTS’ programs at the Roundhouse Aquarium promote the study of the oceans\, tidelands and beaches of Southern California through a wide slate of science-based and standards-aligned education programs with its immersive and engaging exhibits of a diverse array of marine life.  More than 100 marine animals from Southern California’s waters live at the aquarium\, many are native to its local waters in the Santa Monica Bay. Notable wildlife include moon jellies\, sharks\, octopus\, sheepshead\, moray eels\, lobsters\, and more – as well as a touch tank with sea stars\, sea cucumbers\, sea urchins and sea snails. The aquarium prides itself on being family oriented. These exhibits are showcased within 4 Aquarium Galleries. \n\n\nMarine Habitat Gallery\n\nRocky Reef Tank \nThe Rocky Reef shows us what reefs in the cold California waters look like. They are similar to coral reefs but are made up of rocks instead of corals. They are just as important of a habitat as coral reefs and often serve as a nursery for many types of juvenile fish. \nKelp Forest Tank \nThe Kelp Forest tank represents a distinct southern California marine habitat. This tank shows us what it looks like to swim at the edge of the kelp forest\, where rocks become scarcer and sand more plentiful. Many of the animals in the tank can live their life deep within the kelp forest or at the very edge. Those animals at the edges can even camouflage in the sand. \n\n\n\n\nEducation Gallery\n\nDeep Kelp Forest Tank\nThese tanks represent a very diverse and abundant habitat\, the kelp forest! The giant kelp that grows 2 feet a day\, provides food and shelter for many different animals. Not only is this habitat important for animals\, but it is also important to humans as well! Seaweeds\, like kelp\, produce about 70% of our oxygen through photosynthesis. So\, take a deep breath and thank kelp! \nTide Pool Tank\nAll the animals that you can find in our touch tank live in a habitat called a tide pool. When the tide is low and the water has receded\, pools of water are left in between rocks which form the tide pools. In Southern California\, we have 2 high tides and 2 low tides every day\, which means the animals’ habitat is always changing. They must have special adaptations that allow them to live in such a dynamic habitat. \nPier Piling Tank\nHave you ever wondered what is under the pier? This tank will give you a good idea! Pier pilings\, while man made\, do create a habitat for lots of animals ranging from mussels\, to crabs\, to fish and rays. The fish can either hide amongst the mussels or lay on the sand under the pier among the rays. \n\n\n\n \n\n\nMarine Science Gallery\n\nJewel Tank\nSee our animals in the spotlight with cool adaptive traits like our spotted rose anemone that has biofluorescence and our baby swell shark eggs that can camouflage as seaweed. The baby swell sharks are really cute when they hatch out too! \nPipefish Tank\nThe Pipefish tank is an example of a mudflat with eelgrass beds that act as a nursery for young fish and young sting rays. See if you can spot a pipefish in the eelgrass. \nArtificial Reef Tank\nThe Artificial Reef tank is an examples of man-made structures left behind that now act as reefs teaming with life from sea anemones on rock scallops to sea stars to juvenile rockfish. Can you see the bright orange Garibaldi with blue spots? \nOctopus Tank\nThe octopus tank is an example of a deep water habitat brought to life for our guests to see. It features anemones and rock scallops on the reef which also add structure and microhabitats to the reef. The decorator crab uses the colonial strawberry anemones to help decorate its body to camouflage with the reef. There are small but colorful rockfish like the half-banded rockfish that stay close to the rocks and use them as shelter. \nKid’s Kelp Corner\nHave you ever wondered oh why\, oh why did my goldfish die? Come find the answer in the Kid’s Kelp Corner. You can also relax and read the many ocean related books in our library while watching our inquisitive freshwater fish. \nDiscovery Center\nCome check out what it means to be a scientist! Observe plankton\, learn about the food chain\, and discover some of the aquarium’s smallest residents. \nSeahorse Tank\nSeahorses are some of the most fragile sea creatures in the ocean\, and they can camouflage to look like seaweed\, eelgrass\, or even sea fans. They use their tails to hold onto eelgrass and stay upright\, but they won’t swim except in short bursts. This exhibition touches on the role that they play in modern material culture and how they are made to embody social commentary\, along with the ways that artists address piñatas as conceptual and technical launching points for their vision. \nThe work of traditional piñata artisans is presented alongside the creations of artists who reinvent and reinterpret the piñata through engaging sculptural practices. The contemporary artists featured in this exhibition reconsider the techniques\, materials\, form\, function\, and notion of the piñata\, forming a new language for expression. \nPiñatas are a deeply rooted Mexican tradition that has become widespread and beloved across cultures. Piñatas are accessible by nature and made from relatively humble materials. They are shapeshifters that can be created to take any form\, be that of a creature\, shape\, figure\, or idea. Considering their popularity in our lives and how many memories are made around piñata play\, this contemporary form of cultural craft has been relatively unexamined. \nAs creators of material culture\, craft makers design and build the relics of our everyday\, modern world. This exhibition touches on the ephemeral and performative nature of certain forms of craft. Craft today plays a part in our traditions\, our celebrations\, our relationships\, and it deepens how we experience life\, even when it is destroyed or discarded after use. \nPiñatas are intertwined with childhood experiences\, gatherings of family and friends\, and celebratory turning points in life– all of which have become much more precious to us in this era of COVID. As markers of these events\, piñatas have new resonance and meaning today. They continue to be shaped to reflect changing times. After studying bronze casting at Pasadena City College\, Benavidez later switched to paper because it was a more accessible medium. She received a B.S. in Chemical Engineering (2017) from the University of California\, San Diego (UCSD). Originally from Baghdad\, Diana is an Iraqi immigrant who has been passionate about engineering since she was 10 years old\, watching her grandfather weld metal plates in a small machine shop in the backyard of their home in Baghdad. She was named a Gordon Engineering Leadership Fellow and a Brooke Owens Fellow in 2017. Diana worked with multiple aerospace companies like NASA JPL\, Northrop Grumman\, Virgin Orbit and Space Micro. Her responsibilities ranged from design\, test and analyze propulsion systems on liquid propellant rockets.  \nIn October 2018\, Diana founded @TheArabianStargazer; a bilingual educational platform that promotes STEM to the Arab youth all around the world. The platform includes videos\, pictures and riddles about subjects such as “Why should I be an Engineer?” and “How does Space Exploration helps us here on Earth?” She aspires to inspire the youth especially in the Middle Eastern community to be more engaged in space exploration and STEM. Diana hosts virtual classes with schools that do not have access to engineering resources\, where she uses fun and easy engineering concepts and props to explain Science and Space. He is a former flight software test engineer for Europa Clipper\, an orbiter visiting Europa launching in 2024.  He is also a former Apple EPM and a Naval software engineer where his work focused on simulation. A fantastic group of artists & dancers who work with LED Hula Hoops and other LED apparatus they can spin\, toss\, throw in the air\, etc. \n\n Very friendly and talented peeps.  \n \nCelebrating our love of  the FLOW at Glow Flow Santa Monica!\n\n\n\n\nHow to Capture the Glow Flow Moment\nIf spin isn’t your thing\, how about photography. Here are different ways to shoot Glow Flow Santa Monica. \nGOLDEN HOUR / BLUE HOUR\nYou can shoot available light for images of the artists. \nSLOW SHUTTER SPEED\nAs Glow Flow gets dark\, you can use a slow shutter speed to let the moving LED devices draw amazing “spirograph” shapes with light against the night sky. \nSLOW SYNC\nYou can combine both elements with slow sync or rear sync. A long shutter speed captures traces from LED Hula Hoops and then your on-or-off-camera flash lights the artist. \nTHE BEST FLASH?\nI haven’t had the best results with built-in pop-up flash. I like using an external flash in the hot-shoe. At Glow Flow\, We often say that having flash off the hot-shoe produces better lighting. For me\, in this case\, I think there’s so much going on\, that hot-shoe mounted flash works well. You could bring a light stand and battery powered strobe which might look great but seems like a lot of gear. \nTRIPOD?\nIf you use flash\, it will freeze the artist\, and the point-light-sources of the LEDs effectively freeze themselves\, so you can shoot this handheld. However\, you will get crisper images if you use a tripod. \nBRACKET\, BRACKET\, BRACKET!\nAs you can imagine\, dialing in your exposure can be a bit complicated! Plan to try a variety of different shutter speeds to see what works with the LEDs.
