Borrow for 3 weeks\, with the option to renew\, if available. \nPlease note: Laptop & Hotspot Loan Kits require a full access card to check out. At this time requests are site-specific and can only be placed at libraries offering the service (listed above). When can I pick up my Laptop & Hotspot?\nCall the owning library and arrange to pick up your kit during Sidewalk Service hours.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n4. How long can I keep the Laptop & Hotspot Loan? Can I renew?\nThe kits can be borrowed for 3 weeks. If no other customers are on the waiting list\, the checkout can be renewed up to 3 times. How do I return the Chromebook Kit?\nChromebooks must be returned in person to the owning library during Sidewalk Service hours. They cannot be returned in the bookdrop. They cannot be returned to any library other than the one where the kit was checked out. Please call the owning library to arrange a drop-off time and call again once at the library to alert staff. Staff will bring out a box labeled Laptop Return to the Sidewalk Service table. You’ll be instructed to remove all items – the Chromebook\, the wireless hotspot\, and both charging cables – from the carrying case. Put the case into the box first\, on the bottom\, and then put all other items in on top. Staff will check the box to make sure all items are inside and that they look fine. All items will be quarantined for 4 days and confirmed to be working properly before being checked in. Staff will contact you if there are any questions or concerns. Please remember that the loan will still show on your account until the quarantine and check-in process is complete.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n6. Are there late fees?\nLate fees will be assessed the same as all other library materials. The Chromebook will become disabled once the loan period has ended.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n7. We share the unique and invaluable perspectives that artists have on the world around us. \nA vibrant intellectual and creative nexus\, the Hammer is fueled by dynamic exhibitions and programs—including lectures\, symposia\, film series\, readings\, and musical performances—that spark meaningful encounters with art and ideas. \nAnd through our unwavering commitment to free admission and free public programs\, the Hammer is open for all and FREE FOR GOOD.\n\n \n  \n\nA BIGGER\, BETTER HAMMER MUSEUM\n\nIf oil magnate Armand Hammer were alive today\, he might marvel that the museum he launched in Westwood before his death in 1990 has evolved into one of the most forward-focused art institutions in Los Angeles. After all\, the museum was originally designed to house his fine collection of old-master paintings and drawings\, as well as works on paper by Honoré Daumier and his 19th-century contemporaries. \n\n\n\n\n\nBut in the ensuing decades\, as the art world has continued to evolve\, so has Los Angeles — and so has the Hammer Museum\, which is now a part of the UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture. In 1994\, UCLA assumed management and operations of the museum\, and the Hammer kept its original purpose but also expanded its mission. Today\, the Hammer has a wide reputation for innovation and for showcasing new artists. \n  \n\nNew Contemporary Gallery\n\n  \n“L.A. has become a hotbed of contemporary art and artists\,” says Ann Philbin\, the museum’s director since 1999\, “and the Hammer has become a premier institution where they are shown.” \n  \n\n\n4th-Floor-Offices\n\n  \nUnder Philbin’s leadership\, the museum has expanded its collections and programs\, including establishing the Hammer Projects series of exhibitions and installations featuring local\, national and international emerging artists. It also launched the Made in L.A. biennial\, now in its fourth edition. Through these and other innovations\, the Hammer has quadrupled its attendance to about 250\,000 a year. \n  \nLindbrook Terrace\n  \nMeanwhile\, Occidental Petroleum\, which occupied the adjoining building\, relocated to Houston\, Texas. So the Hammer has begun a major\, multiyear expansion that will take the museum far into the 21st century. \nEarlier this year\, the Hammer announced a $180 million capital campaign. Almost half of those funds will be used to expand gallery and other public spaces\, while the rest will go toward exhibitions\, programming and an endowment. The museum has already raised more than $130 million\, including $30 million from L.A. philanthropists Lynda and Stewart ’59\, J.D. ’62 Resnick and $20 million from Hammer board chair Marcy Carsey. \n  \n  \nAnnex\n  \nThe renovations and additions being designed by Michael Maltzan Architecture\, who was commissioned in 2000 to create the museum’s 2003 master plan\, include: \n• A newly designed entrance at Wilshire and Westwood boulevards to maximize the museum’s visual presence at one of the nation’s busiest intersections. In the coming years\, the museum will also benefit from a planned Metro Purple Line station across Wilshire. \n• More than 10\,000 square feet of additional exhibition space for contemporary art. \n• New permanent collection galleries and a study room for the Grunwald Center Collection. \n• 20\,000 square feet of enhanced public spaces\, including a new restaurant. \n• A new and more accessible Hammer Store. \n  \n  \n2nd Floor B Side\n  \nIn all\, the expansion will provide 60 percent more gallery space for exhibitions. The museum will remain open during construction\, and admission will continue to be free. “We’re accessible to everyone\, and that keeps people coming back\,” Philbin says. “L.A. has been growing as one of the world’s most exciting cultural creative communities\, and the museum has grown alongside it.” \n  \n\n  \nBookstore\nHISTORY OF THE HAMMER MUSEUM\nThe Hammer Museum opened to the public in November 1990. Founded by Dr. Armand Hammer\, former Chairman of Occidental Petroleum Corporation\, the Museum was designed by architect Edward Larrabee Barnes. Financed by Occidental\, the Museum was built adjacent to the Corporation’s international headquarters in Westwood. At that time\, the Museum featured galleries for Dr. Hammer’s collections — old master paintings and drawings\, and a collection of works on paper by Honore Daumier and his contemporaries — as well as galleries for traveling exhibitions. Dr. Hammer passed away in December 1990\, three weeks after the opening of the Museum leaving many spaces unfinished. \nIn 1992\, the Museum began negotiations with its neighbor\, University of California\, Los Angeles (UCLA)\, to assume the management and operations of the institution. In April 1994\, the partnership with UCLA was finalized and the following year the University relocated its collections and the staff of the Wight Art Gallery and the Grunwald Center for the Graphic Arts to the Hammer. The Museum also assumed responsibility for the Franklin D. Murphy Sculpture Garden\, located at the north end of the UCLA campus. \nHenry Hopkins\, then director of the Wight gallery and professor in the Department of Art\, became director of the Museum until his retirement in 1998. In 1999 Ann Philbin was named director and has developed a strong and original institutional identity and built a national and international reputation for thematic contemporary exhibitions\, scholarly historical exhibitions\, and contemporary artists’ projects. During her tenure the Hammer has formed a Hammer Contemporary Collection which now holds over 2\,000 artworks. In addition\, Philbin has overseen substantial renovations to the museum’s building\, including the completion of the 300-seat Billy Wilder Theater and museum café. With Philbin’s direction\, the museum instituted the internationally acclaimed Hammer Projects\, a series of more than one hundred contemporary exhibitions and installations featuring local\, national\, and international emerging artists. Her special interests are California native and pollinator plants and creating therapeutic gardens and sacred garden spaces in both healthcare and home settings. The grunion has been known to many Southern Californians for more than 100 years\, but there are still those who are skeptical of its existence. To be invited out in the middle of the night to go and watch fish does sound a little ridiculous\, but in reality this is the only way to observe this natural phenomenon. \nCalifornia grunion are small\, silvery fish found only along the coast of Southern California and northern Baja California. Most people would be unaware of their existence were it not for the unique spawning behavior of these fish. Unlike other fish\, grunion come completely out of the water to lay their eggs in the wet sand of the beach. As if this behavior were not strange enough\, grunion make these excursions only on particular nights\, and with such regularity that the time of their arrival on the beach can be predicted a year in advance. This phenomenon can be seen on many beaches in Southern California. Shortly after high tide\, on certain nights\, sections of these beaches are sometimes covered with thousands of grunion depositing their eggs in the sand. \nGrunion watching has become a popular sport in Southern California. Attendees who climb to the top of the 25 ft. climbing wall will receive a t-shirt or tote bag\, and will be entered into a drawing for a chance to win a 1-month Sender One membership! Plus\, get a first look at Sender One Playa Vista before construction is completed.  \n\n\n\nThe Studio (MDR) will have a series of challenges utilizing the high intensity\, low impact workout similar to the megaformer they are known for. One top challenge finisher will win a one month unlimited membership! \n\n\n\nOrangetheory will challenge participants to go “All Out” and get your heart pumping. Participants will get a feel for the intensity of an Orangetheory studio workout by hopping on one of our signature orange water rowers and rowing for 500 meters for time and then jumping off and doing a series of 20 body weight exercises. Made possible through the support of donors this year\, the installation will be on display at the corner of Pacific Coast Highway and Malibu Canyon Road \n“Pepperdine has a long tradition of honoring those who have gone before us\,” said Pepperdine president Jim Gash (JD ’93). “For nearly two decades\, this community has paused on this day each year to remember\, to grieve\, and to celebrate the lives of those we lost on that day in 2001.” \n\n\n \n\n\n \n  \nWaves of Flags became a University tradition in 2008 when the Pepperdine College Republicans\, inspired by a similar display\, wanted to bring the tribute to the University. For more than a decade\, it has been a significant project that has united the Pepperdine\, Malibu\, and Greater Los Angeles communities in service. Due to the pandemic\, the installation of the flags\, which is typically led by Pepperdine community members and volunteers from the Malibu community\, was executed by the University this year in consideration of the safety of local and surrounding communities. \nIn addition to the Waves of Flags installation\, Pepperdine is the permanent home of the Thomas E. Burnett\, Jr.\, Heroes Garden\, a place to honor all those who live heroic lives\, including Pepperdine alumnus Thomas E. Burnett\, Jr. (MBA ’95)\, a passenger on United Flight 93\, whose life was cut short in the September 11 attacks. The garden’s plaque reads: “Dedicated to freedom’s heroes of September 11\, 2001\, and the passengers of United Airlines Flight 93\, among them Pepperdine alumnus Thomas E. Burnett\, Jr.\, who sacrificed their lives to overcome terrorists’ intent on destroying American lives and landmarks in our nation’s capital. We shall never forget.” Heroes Garden is currently closed to the public\, along with the rest of the Pepperdine campus. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nA service to honor those who perished in the historic tragedy\, is traditionally held each year\, on September 11. But two out of three children living in poverty have no books to call their own. \n  \n \nBook-sharing boxes play an essential role by providing 24/7 access to books (and encouraging a love of reading!) in areas where books are scarce. \nAt the Little Free Library nonprofit\, we’re working to fill book deserts and place libraries where they can make a big impact through our Impact Library Program. We’ve donated more than 1\,000 libraries through this program to-date. \n  \n \n  \nThe Los Angeles area is already home to almost 75 such libraries; use the Little Free Library map to find exact addresses for boxes in Hollywood\, Culver City\, Westchester\, Marina Del Rey\, Burbank\, and beyond. The primary areas are the landscaping around the Greenhouse Complex\, the Mediterranean Garden\, and the El Rincon Garden at the corner of the Tram Road and the Service Yard road marked by the rustic lodge pole pergola. \n  \n \nChildren’s Garden and Children’s Discovery Garden\nOur most popular among young people\, this garden is developed around nursery rhymes with plants to match the stories. An enchanted dollhouse and bridge enhance the setting. Adjacent to the Children’s Garden is the Discovery Garden with a secret tunnel\, worm bin\, alphabet garden\, butterfly garden\, and whimsical characters. \n  \n \nThe New Rose Garden \nEvery view in the remarkable new Rose Garden (First Bloom coming April 2018) is breathtaking. Hand-crafted\, wrought iron fence-work depicts rose emblems\, rounded staircases gently welcome guests in\, rich warm wood tones envelop architectural structures\, a large fountain features an exquisite glass mosaic\, and of course\, colorful roses drip from every crevice. A grand guest entrance provides a magnificent overview of the formally planted space\, allowing guests to catch a glimpse of the beautiful asymmetrical design created by renowned landscape architect\, Deborah Richie-Bray\, who is known for her work at the Getty Villa. Undulating pathways guide gently through a labyrinth of planted beds and sculptural elements. Two cabana structures flank the central court and provide shade on a hot day. The celebration lawn houses several formal entrance paths that lead to a grand pergola with a raised plaza which will serve as a “stage” for events and ceremonies. \nThe more than 80 rose selections feature a variety of forms\, from climbers to ground covers. The choice of fragrant roses such as the David Austin English\, create a space of beauty in sight and scent. Rose cultivars have also been chosen by theme (the Flower Girl lines the potential bride’s path) and color (notice the ombré effect from peach to pink to red on the eastern side.) Some of the oldest varieties were hybridized in the 1800’s including Barrone Prevoset and Madame Plantier. These along with 20 rare cultivars were saved from the original garden. The Rose Garden has a unique planting design that will provide year-round appeal with plenty of non-rose companion plantings to ensure a lush experience. While typically rose gardens close for pruning when the main event plants have been clipped down to bare sticks\, the layered and diverse plant palette of this garden will provide delight year-round. Watch for bursts of purple jacaranda\, hot pink crape myrtle\, and powdery pink cherry blossoms up high\, and lower to the ground seek out blooming paper whites\, sage\, boxwood and succulents. \n  \n \nDesert Garden\nThe Desert Garden includes cacti\, euphorbia\, aloes\, and other succulents. The garden is an excellent exhibition of specimens from the United States\, Africa\, Mexico\, and South America. \n \nJapanese Garden/Koi Pond\nGarden maintained with a Bonsai Display by South Coast Bonsai Association. Enjoy listening to the calming sounds of water and taking in the subdued palette of evergreen shrubbery embracing the Koi Pond. The stone lanterns were crafted of Okazaki Stone over 200 years ago in a region said to be the capital of Japan’s stone craft. \nMediterranean Garden\nMediterranean refers to a unique climate consisting of mild\, cool\, rainy winters and hot\, dry summers seen in only five places in the world: coastal California\, the Mediterranean Basin\, southwest Australia\, the southwest Cape of South Africa\, and coastal Chile. California native plants are emphasized here. Mediterranean plants are environmentally friendly because they require very little supplemental water once established. Native plants have the added benefit of providing food and shelter to wildlife and pollinators. \nDisplay Greenhouse\nThe Display Greenhouse is open to the public from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm daily. Designed with the color palette in mind\, the colors range from warm to cool tones. Inside the greenhouse you will find a display of a variety of tropical plants such as: Adenium\, Anthurium\, Begonia\, Bromeliad\, Carnivorous plants\, Cordyline\, Croton\, Orchids\, Hoya\, and Passionflower vine. \nFuchsia Garden\nEstablished and maintained by the South Coast Branch of the National Fuchsia Society\, this garden contains many different species\, cultivars\, and new introductions. In the spring\, colorful Clivias brighten the understory of this shady grove. \nCalifornia Native Plants\nGrowing California native plants in the Garden offers many benefits: they use less water; they provide habitat and food for birds\, bees\, butterflies\, and other wildlife; they have colorful flower displays from spring to summer and berries and seeds into the fall and winter. There are several areas of the Garden where you can find California Native Plants in the landscape and gardens. The primary areas are the landscaping around the Greenhouse Complex\, the Mediterranean Garden\, and the El Rincon Garden at the corner of the Tram Road and the Service Yard road marked by the rustic lodge pole pergola. \n  \n \nChildren’s Garden and Children’s Discovery Garden\nOur most popular among young people\, this garden is developed around nursery rhymes with plants to match the stories. An enchanted dollhouse and bridge enhance the setting. Adjacent to the Children’s Garden is the Discovery Garden with a secret tunnel\, worm bin\, alphabet garden\, butterfly garden\, and whimsical characters. \n  \n \nThe New Rose Garden \nEvery view in the remarkable new Rose Garden (First Bloom coming April 2018) is breathtaking. Hand-crafted\, wrought iron fence-work depicts rose emblems\, rounded staircases gently welcome guests in\, rich warm wood tones envelop architectural structures\, a large fountain features an exquisite glass mosaic\, and of course\, colorful roses drip from every crevice. A grand guest entrance provides a magnificent overview of the formally planted space\, allowing guests to catch a glimpse of the beautiful asymmetrical design created by renowned landscape architect\, Deborah Richie-Bray\, who is known for her work at the Getty Villa. Undulating pathways guide gently through a labyrinth of planted beds and sculptural elements. Two cabana structures flank the central court and provide shade on a hot day. The celebration lawn houses several formal entrance paths that lead to a grand pergola with a raised plaza which will serve as a “stage” for events and ceremonies. \nThe more than 80 rose selections feature a variety of forms\, from climbers to ground covers. The choice of fragrant roses such as the David Austin English\, create a space of beauty in sight and scent. Rose cultivars have also been chosen by theme (the Flower Girl lines the potential bride’s path) and color (notice the ombré effect from peach to pink to red on the eastern side.) Some of the oldest varieties were hybridized in the 1800’s including Barrone Prevoset and Madame Plantier. These along with 20 rare cultivars were saved from the original garden. The Rose Garden has a unique planting design that will provide year-round appeal with plenty of non-rose companion plantings to ensure a lush experience. While typically rose gardens close for pruning when the main event plants have been clipped down to bare sticks\, the layered and diverse plant palette of this garden will provide delight year-round. Watch for bursts of purple jacaranda\, hot pink crape myrtle\, and powdery pink cherry blossoms up high\, and lower to the ground seek out blooming paper whites\, sage\, boxwood and succulents. \n  \n \nDesert Garden\nThe Desert Garden includes cacti\, euphorbia\, aloes\, and other succulents. The garden is an excellent exhibition of specimens from the United States\, Africa\, Mexico\, and South America. \n \nJapanese Garden/Koi Pond\nGarden maintained with a Bonsai Display by South Coast Bonsai Association. Enjoy listening to the calming sounds of water and taking in the subdued palette of evergreen shrubbery embracing the Koi Pond. The stone lanterns were crafted of Okazaki Stone over 200 years ago in a region said to be the capital of Japan’s stone craft. \nMediterranean Garden\nMediterranean refers to a unique climate consisting of mild\, cool\, rainy winters and hot\, dry summers seen in only five places in the world: coastal California\, the Mediterranean Basin\, southwest Australia\, the southwest Cape of South Africa\, and coastal Chile. California native plants are emphasized here. Mediterranean plants are environmentally friendly because they require very little supplemental water once established. Native plants have the added benefit of providing food and shelter to wildlife and pollinators. \nDisplay Greenhouse\nThe Display Greenhouse is open to the public from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm daily. Designed with the color palette in mind\, the colors range from warm to cool tones. Inside the greenhouse you will find a display of a variety of tropical plants such as: Adenium\, Anthurium\, Begonia\, Bromeliad\, Carnivorous plants\, Cordyline\, Croton\, Orchids\, Hoya\, and Passionflower vine. \nFuchsia Garden\nEstablished and maintained by the South Coast Branch of the National Fuchsia Society\, this garden contains many different species\, cultivars\, and new introductions. Overhead shade cloth filters strong sunlight to allow fuchsias and other shade-loving plants to thrive. \nGarden for the Senses\nThis garden encourages you to enjoy plants and flowers by smell\, touch\, sound\, and sight. Plants are arranged in raised beds so they can easily be touched or smelled. Individual plant labels identify which senses the plant engages. \nAnd more! \nMust Visit Place for All Nature Lovers\nThe South Coast Botanic Garden serves the community in various ways by providing a unique horticultural and wildlife habitat experience. It also represents the excellent model of land reclamation and sustainability – by promoting the usage of water-saving vegetation. The South Coast Botanic Garden is a treasure to be relished and a must-have experience for all nature lovers. \nYou can even buy plants suitable for the local climate. Bird watchers can enjoy the bird walks conducted twice every month. We believe in romanticizing our daily lives and what better way to do that than doing yoga on a beautiful beach in Southern California? In this class\, Noel will lead us through yoga flows that invite us to check in with our body and mind. We will leave the mat feeling centered and rejuvenated. \nThis event is sponsored by The Phoenix\, a nonprofit organization that leverages community and fitness to lead a healthy lifestyle without substance use. We ask only one thing from our participants — 48 hours of sobriety. To ensure a safe and healthy space\, we ask everyone to wear a mask. Our Tuesday events are led by Noel\, a certified yoga instructor\, holistic health practitioner\, and substance use counselor in the making! Noel brings years of experience and wants one thing: to share her passion for healing with others for FREE. \n \nThere are many benefits of attending Phoenix events: \n\nFree loaner yoga mats provided\nExtra PPE (if you forget a mask or it breaks\, we have one for you)\nCommunity of shared experiences of wanting to lead a healthy lifestyle minus drugs\n\nWe will meet every Tuesday at 4:30 PM at the grassy patch next to Lot 5.\nThe best way to spot us is by looking for a volunteer who will be wearing our shirt. Parking is just $2 at the lot. \nYou may bring your own mat and supplies if you wish. We also recommend bringing a jacket or sweater\, as the weather can get chilly in the evening hours.
