SUMMARY:THE DEEP END
DESCRIPTION:EVERY FRIDAY– DTLA\nParty with us to the Deep End this weekend at Upstairs\, Ace Hotel brought to you by BRIGGS! Party with the highest energy and sing your heart out to the music! \n \nJoin Briggs Upstairs for a smooth mix of r&b\, hip hop and rap. \nBriggs is well known as a DJ\, A&R\, Songwriter\, and Creative Director. Briggs was born and raised in Los Angeles\, California. He is known for playing 90s 2000s hip hop and R&B sprinkled in with the now top 40s hits. His party’s take you back along memory lane all while keeping you moving and singing the whole night. \nWith Special Guest appearances every week bringing you the best 90s\, 2000s\, Hip-Hop\, R&B\, and Afrobeats! Party like never before!! \nSEE YOU THERE! \n21+ / Free for everyone. \n\n \n929 South Broadway Los Angeles\, CA 90015 United States \n \nIn historic Downtown Los Angeles\, where the grit meets the glamour.\nWelcome to Ace Hotel Downtown Los Angeles\, where the grit meets the glamour! Located on Broadway and 9th Street at the southernmost point of the Broadway Histroic Theater District\, offers seven fresh and minimalist rooms and suites. Not only do they serve palette-bursting delicacies in their restaurant\, but you can also head up to its rooftop bar where you can dip in their pool while sipping cool drinks by day and attend jaw-dropping parties at night! \n \nThe main attraction is the restored United Artists THeater which occupies three floors of the 13-story building and has a 1\,600-seat auditorium. The building stands as a shining monument to the American artistic spirit and theatrical history. The theater exemplifies the love of Spanish castles and cathedral stonework. \n \nBuilt in 1927 as the flagship movie palace for United Artists — the maverick film studio founded by Mary Pickford\, Douglas Fairbanks\, D.W Griffith\, and Charlie Chaplin — The Theatre at Ace Hotel is our loving reanimation of one of the city’s most remarkable gems. It’s a delicately restored\, 1\,600-seat cathedral to the arts\, with a three-story\, 2\,300 square foot grand lobby\, an ornate open balcony\, and a vaulted ceiling dotted with thousands of mirrors that glimmer like tiny stars. \n \nSince returning The Theatre to its storied splendor\, we’ve played host to hundreds of meaningful\, nearly sacred\, wholly rock and roll experiences: large-scale concerts\, major movie premieres\, sold-out dance performances — if it fits inside the proscenium\, we’ve probably presented it. Retrofitted with a state-of-the-art digital projection system and cinema sound\, an independent\, ultramodern live sound system\, plus an elaborate contemporary stage lighting system\, The Theatre at Ace Hotel is a radically inclusive stage fit for our heart’s royalty — artists\, musicians\, visionaries and cultural igniters. \n\nVersatile spaces made for memories of all shapes and sizes\n \n\nWhether you’re hosting a concert\, film screening\, holiday soiree\, workshop\, record launch\, dinner\, reception\, or something all your own\, we’ve got the canvas\, menus\, and staff to make it amazing. Get all the details and anything you need when you reach out to the team. \nWe believe in celebrations of all sizes\, there’s no reason too big or too small to mark the moment. Flexible enough to suit whatever you’ve got in mind\, Ace Hotel DTLA’s private spaces hold the magnetism of Old Hollywood within a glorious Spanish Gothic structure. \n \nGo for cinematic sights and the pool Upstairs\, host a cozy café-like affair on the Mezzanine or truly throw something for the ages in our magical movie palace next door. Each of our spaces is a generous canvas\, adaptable for everything from culinary workshops\, record launches\, dinners\, receptions\, or whatever you need us to be. \n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nwww.eventbrite.com/e/the-deep-end-tickets\n \n  \nFind more

SUMMARY:Roundhouse Aquarium
DESCRIPTION:OPEN DAILY- Manhattan Beach Pier\nThe Roundhouse Aquarium is located at the end of the Manhattan Beach Pier. The Roundhouse has undergone a recent revitalization through a $4 million capital project spearheaded by the Harrison Greenberg Foundation. The new Roundhouse Aquarium educates and inspires more than 300\,000 visitors every year. It is managed and operated by the nonprofit oceanic and environmental organization Oceanographic Teaching Stations\, Inc. (OTS)\, whose mission is to connect and engage visitors and students to the oceans through hands-on interactive experiences with marine life and habitats of southern California\, and to inspire them to become good stewards of our environment. \nOTS’ programs at the Roundhouse Aquarium promote the study of the oceans\, tidelands and beaches of Southern California through a wide slate of science-based and standards-aligned education programs with its immersive and engaging exhibits of a diverse array of marine life.  More than 100 marine animals from Southern California’s waters live at the aquarium\, many are native to its local waters in the Santa Monica Bay. Notable wildlife include moon jellies\, sharks\, octopus\, sheepshead\, moray eels\, lobsters\, and more – as well as a touch tank with sea stars\, sea cucumbers\, sea urchins and sea snails. The aquarium prides itself on being family oriented. It’s a great place for kids to take their parents! \n\n\n\n\n\nCome SEA our Marine Exhibits\nGet to know the habitats within Southern California by visiting our diverse marine exhibits. These exhibits are showcased within 4 Aquarium Galleries. \n\n\nMarine Habitat Gallery\n\nRocky Reef Tank \nThe Rocky Reef shows us what reefs in the cold California waters look like. They are similar to coral reefs but are made up of rocks instead of corals. They are just as important of a habitat as coral reefs and often serve as a nursery for many types of juvenile fish. \nKelp Forest Tank \nThe Kelp Forest tank represents a distinct southern California marine habitat. This tank shows us what it looks like to swim at the edge of the kelp forest\, where rocks become scarcer and sand more plentiful. Many of the animals in the tank can live their life deep within the kelp forest or at the very edge. Those animals at the edges can even camouflage in the sand. \n\n\n\n\nEducation Gallery\n\nDeep Kelp Forest Tank\nThese tanks represent a very diverse and abundant habitat\, the kelp forest! The giant kelp that grows 2 feet a day\, provides food and shelter for many different animals. Not only is this habitat important for animals\, but it is also important to humans as well! Seaweeds\, like kelp\, produce about 70% of our oxygen through photosynthesis. So\, take a deep breath and thank kelp! \nTide Pool Tank\nAll the animals that you can find in our touch tank live in a habitat called a tide pool. When the tide is low and the water has receded\, pools of water are left in between rocks which form the tide pools. In Southern California\, we have 2 high tides and 2 low tides every day\, which means the animals’ habitat is always changing. They must have special adaptations that allow them to live in such a dynamic habitat. \nPier Piling Tank\nHave you ever wondered what is under the pier? This tank will give you a good idea! Pier pilings\, while man made\, do create a habitat for lots of animals ranging from mussels\, to crabs\, to fish and rays. The fish can either hide amongst the mussels or lay on the sand under the pier among the rays. \n\n\n\n \n\n\nMarine Science Gallery\n\nJewel Tank\nSee our animals in the spotlight with cool adaptive traits like our spotted rose anemone that has biofluorescence and our baby swell shark eggs that can camouflage as seaweed. The baby swell sharks are really cute when they hatch out too! \nPipefish Tank\nThe Pipefish tank is an example of a mudflat with eelgrass beds that act as a nursery for young fish and young sting rays. See if you can spot a pipefish in the eelgrass. \nArtificial Reef Tank\nThe Artificial Reef tank is an examples of man-made structures left behind that now act as reefs teaming with life from sea anemones on rock scallops to sea stars to juvenile rockfish. Can you see the bright orange Garibaldi with blue spots? \nOctopus Tank\nThe octopus tank is an example of a deep water habitat brought to life for our guests to see. It features anemones and rock scallops on the reef which also add structure and microhabitats to the reef. The decorator crab uses the colonial strawberry anemones to help decorate its body to camouflage with the reef. There are small but colorful rockfish like the half-banded rockfish that stay close to the rocks and use them as shelter. \nKid’s Kelp Corner\nHave you ever wondered oh why\, oh why did my goldfish die? Come find the answer in the Kid’s Kelp Corner. You can also relax and read the many ocean related books in our library while watching our inquisitive freshwater fish. \nDiscovery Center\nCome check out what it means to be a scientist! Observe plankton\, learn about the food chain\, and discover some of the aquarium’s smallest residents. \nSeahorse Tank\nSeahorses are some of the most fragile sea creatures in the ocean\, and they can camouflage to look like seaweed\, eelgrass\, or even sea fans. They use their tails to hold onto eelgrass and stay upright\, but they won’t swim except in short bursts. They have excellent eyesight that they use to track their prey\, which are small shrimps. \n  \n\n\n\nImmersion Gallery\n\n\n\n\n\nOctober through March\nMonday-Friday: 2PM – 5PM\nSaturday-Sunday: 10AM – 5PM\n\n\n\n\n\n\n}\n\n\nApril through September\nMonday-Friday: 2PM – 7PM\nSaturday-Sunday: 10AM – 7PM \nHours\nMonday: Closed\nTuesday – Saturday: 10:00am – 5:00pm\nSunday: 11:00am – 5:00pm \n  \n\n\nAdvanced timed-entry reservations are required.\n\n\n\n\n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nroundhouseaquarium.org/\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n  \n\n\n\n\n  \n

SUMMARY:The Broad Museum
DESCRIPTION:FREE TUE – SUN- Bunker Hill\, DTLA\n\n\n\n\nThe Broad museum presents an in-depth installation of Roy Lichtenstein\, opening May 26\, 2021\, features 22 artworks\, with nearly half on view for the first time\, including Purist Still Life (1975)\, Female Figure (1979)\, Two Paintings: Radiator and Folded Sheets (1984)\, and Nude with Pyramid (1994). \nAn outcome of sustained and ongoing engagement with artists and artwork\, the Broad collection is distinctive in its exceptional dedication to the full arc of artists’ careers. The Broad has highlighted this depth through expansive presentations in the third floor galleries\, featuring Jean-Michel Basquiat\, Roy Lichtenstein\, Kara Walker\, Andy Warhol\, and Christopher Wool\, along with works by many others. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFrom the curators\n\n\n\nRead extended content on Lichtenstein’s works in our mobile museum guide: mobile.thebroad.org/artistguides \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHighlighted Artwork\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPurist Still Life\n\nRoy Lichtenstein\n\n\n1975\n\n\noil and Magna on canvas\n\n\n70 x 80 in. Grand Avenue\, Los Angeles\, CA 90012\nThe Broad makes its collection of contemporary art from the 1950s to the present accessible to the widest possible audience by presenting exhibitions and operating a lending program to art museums and galleries worldwide. \nBy actively building a dynamic collection that features in-depth representations of influential contemporary artists and by advancing education and engagement through exhibitions and diverse public programming\, the museum enriches\, provokes\, inspires\, and fosters appreciation of art of our time. \n \nThe Broad was founded by philanthropists Eli and Edythe Broad on Grand Avenue in downtown Los Angeles. Designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro in collaboration with Gensler\, the museum offers free general admission and presents an active program of rotating temporary exhibitions and innovative audience engagement. The Broad is home to 2\,000 works of art in the Broad collection\, which is one of the world’s leading collections of postwar and contemporary art. \n  \n \nThe Broad from Home\nThe Broad is committed to inspiring and fostering an appreciation of contemporary art through our digital initiatives. Experience #TheBroadFromHome to find inspiration through music\, poetry\, performance\, workshops\, and conversations centered around the Broad collection. \nOverview \nPerformances \nTalks & Conversations \nArtist Spotlight \nFamily Art Workshops \nMore Online Programs \n  \nThe Broad Collection\nEli and Edythe Broad have been building their collection of postwar and contemporary art over the last 50 years. With a belief that the greatest art collections are built when the art is being made\, the Broads took to collecting art of their own time. \nThe Broad is home to 2\,000 works in the Broad collection by more than 200 artists\, and is one of the world’s leading collections of postwar and contemporary art. The collection features in-depth holdings of influential contemporary artists such as Jean-Michel Basquiat\, Mark Bradford\, Jasper Johns\, Jeff Koons\, Barbara Kruger\, Yayoi Kusama\, Kerry James Marshall\, Julie Mehretu\, Takashi Murakami\, Robert Rauschenberg\, Ed Ruscha\, Cindy Sherman\, Cy Twombly\, Andy Warhol\, and more\, plus an ever-growing representation of younger artists. \n  \nView Our Collection Here\n \nIn Under the Table\, 1994\, the viewer is both in the world of imaginary giants and in the world of remembered childhood. Fusing Alice in Wonderland with the Duchampian tradition of the readymade\, Artist Robert Therrien constructs a doppelganger from an everyday object\, both displaying his visual wit and actualizing literary or imaginative fantasy in three-dimensional space. The table exudes an extraordinary aura\, compelling one to walk underneath the table and conjuring the physical memory of being under the table of one’s childhood home. Complicated and powerful\, the work offers fresh ideas of what a table\, sculpture\, and memory can mean. \n  \n  \n \nUsing the recognizable form of a balloon twisted into the shape of a dog\, Koons has frozen a moment in time\, exaggerating both scale and material. \nBalloon Dog (Blue) is literal and abstract. When standing close to it\, one’s own distorted reflection bends around smooth pert curves. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\nGeneral Admission is Free\nAll visitors must reserve timed tickets in advance. We feature Cooking for Kids with vegan chef Acooba Scott. Kids use farmers’ market ingredients for tasty\, hands-on fun! All are welcome at this complimentary class. \nWho’s Acooba?\nA vegetarian all her adult life\, Acooba is an accomplished vegetarian and vegan chef. She offers several classes and workshops\, providing support for those interested in starting or sustaining a vegetarian lifestyle. \nAlso For KIDS!\n \nMar Vista Farmers’ Market offers a free craft workshop each week for our younger visitors. There is a different project each time – plus face painting.  Come join us and Sandra Brandoli and  Liza Vosbigian! \n  \n\n \n3826 Grand View Blvd. Los Angeles\, CA 90066 \n  \n\nMar Vista is your neighborhood Certified Farmers Market – selling the freshest fruits\, flowers and veggies at their peak\, directly to consumers. Straight from California family farms to your table. Bon appetit! \nBegun in 1977\, the Certified Farmers Market (CFM) program exempted farmers from prior packing\, sizing and labeling requirements. According to the California Department of Food & Agriculture\, this has a number of benefits to consumers and the agricultural community: CFMs — \n\n\nBring fresh\, high quality goods from producers and create a diverse market. \n\n\n Give consumers opportunities to meet the farmer and learn how their food supply is produced. \n\n\n Provide a great opportunity for small farmers to market their products without the added expenses of commercial preparation. This increases their net income and makes it possible for them to stay in business. \n\n\n Offer a flexible marketing alternative without disrupting other produce marketing systems. \n\n\nThere are approximately 800 Certified Farmers Markets in California and approximately 2\,500 certified producers. Of these markets\, 50% are year-round markets. The balance are seasonal\, generally operating from April through October. \n\nHours\n4th Sunday of the Month: 10:00am – 2:00pm\n\n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nwww.marvistafarmersmarket.org\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Train Rides in Torrance
DESCRIPTION:EVERY 1st SUNDAY & 3rd SATURDAY- Wilson Park\, Torrance\nSouthern California Live Steamers provides mini-train rides on public run days every first Sunday of the month from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and every third Saturday of the month from noon to 3 p.m. All SCLS members are City of Torrance volunteers with annual fingerprint clearance and are not paid for their time expended on maintaining the trains and facility\, and providing the rides.Donations are appreciated. \n  \n \nIn 1987\, for the Torrance 75th anniversary event\, the City of Torrance asked SCLS if they could set up a small track on the back end of Wilson Park. At the time this was a vacant lot\, no trees and only weeds for vegetation. Considerable effort was expended by both the City and SCLS to prepare the area and lay the tracks necessary to run the trains. During the City’s 75th Anniversary Celebration in October 1987\, the free train rides were so well received by the public that the City sought to have SCLS run the trains on a regular basis. On May 11\, 1990\, the City and SCLS entered into a 25-year License Agreement allowing SCLS to provide free train rides at Wilson Park on a regular basis. A new home was found! \nANOTHER 25 YEARS \nThe mini-train rides have become a popular feature of Wilson Park. Originally\, free train rides were offered once a month on the first Sunday of each month. Today\, SCLS provides free train rides twice a month on the first Sunday and third Saturday of each month\, and on special occasions. The City and SCLS entered into another 25-year lease agreement thru May 11\, 2040. \nSouthern California Live Steamers\, Inc. operates as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization under IRS rules and is a registered California non-profit corporation. All of the income for the operation of SCLS is derived by donations from its members\, passengers and corporate sponsors\, and thru fundraisers. SCLS does not charge the passengers for rides on public run days\, though donations are accepted from our riders on public run days which is on the 1st Sunday and 3rd Saturday of each month. Funds received are used to pay SCLS expenses such as insurance\, maintenance costs\, facility upgrades\, fuel\, track repairs\, future track projects\, and other expenses. All SCLS members are City of Torrance volunteers and are not paid for their time expended on club projects or operations. \nmers \n  \nHours\n3rd Saturdays: 12:00pm – 3:00pm\n1st Sundays: 11:00am – 3:00pm \n\nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nhttps://www.torranceca.gov/\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

SUMMARY:Hollywood Heritage Museum
DESCRIPTION:OPEN EVERY FRIDAY-SUNDAY- Hollywood\nThe Hollywood Heritage Museum\, is located in the Lasky-DeMille Barn\, which was built in 1901.  The story of the early Hollywood motion picture industry and the historic Hollywood community is told through archival photographs\, historic documents\, movie props and related memorabilia.  Visitors experience the actual structure where Cecil B. DeMille’s office exists\, furnished with selected personal DeMille belongings\, and where countless movies were filmed and studio staff worked and played. \nOn December 27\, 1956\, the Lasky-DeMille Barn was designated California State Historic Landmark No. 554\, recognizing the significant role the building played in the birth of the Hollywood motion picture industry.  Since 1985\, Hollywood Heritage\, Inc. has funded the preservation\, restoration and maintenance of the barn. It’s the oldest existing motion picture production building in Hollywood\, having been established as the Burns-Revier Studio in 1912\, and becoming the Jesse L. Lasky Feature Play Company in 1913.  The Lasky Company merged with Adolph Zuckor’s Famous Players in 1916\, becoming Famous Players-Lasky and merging with Paramount Distributing Company\, finally becoming Paramount Pictures Corporation. In 2014\, the Lasky-DeMille Barn was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. [See the Time Line on the Museum link for a more detailed history of the barn]. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nVISITING THE MUSEUM\nThe Hollywood Heritage Museum is open Friday\, Saturday and Sunday from noon until 4 pm. As we share our ample parking lot with the Hollywood Bowl\, the museum is occasionally closed when the Bowl has an event.  If you are traveling a long way to visit us\, it might be a good idea to phone first to make sure we are open: (323) 874-2276. \n\n\nPARKING\nParking is free. There is a large parking area on the east side of Highland Avenue\, in front of the museum.  There is no entrance facing Highland Avenue.  You have to go around the corner either on Milner Road or Odin Street and immediately turn into the lot.  If there are parking lot attendants at a barricade\, tell them that you are visiting the museum. \nPUBLIC TRANSPORTATION\nThe Metro subway station closest to the Museum is the Hollywood-Highland stop.  We are located approximately a half-mile north on Highland Avenue\, about a 12-minute walk. \nBECOME A DOCENT:\nHollywood Heritage is a volunteer driven organization. Our docents assist museum guests and help with our Barn programs\, as well as many other activities associated with historic preservation issues and the day-to-day activities that make our organization so vital.  If you are interested in becoming involved\, click here. \n  \n \nHOLLYWOOD HERITAGE ARCHIVE:\nHollywood Heritage maintains an archive of historic photographs\, documents\, and other material related to the film industry and the community.  Our archive also includes considerable holdings on Hollywood real estate history and buildings of architectural significance.  We continue to seek material related to our dual mission of industry and community history.  Questions regarding our archive and donations procedures should be directed to our Collections Manager\, Richard Adkins. \nDONATION OF PHYSICAL ITEMS:\nHollywood Heritage welcomes donations both monetary and physical objects.  Donated items fall into two categories. \nFor resale in the Museum Store:  The museum store contains new and used items.  The older items are all donated to Hollywood Heritage and include books on the motion picture industry and its participants\, and books on the Los Angeles area.  It also includes used DVDs\, VHS tapes and other electronic storage of motion pictures\, as well as related items. These types of donated items can be dropped off at the museum along with the donor’s name and address so that\, if desired\, donor recognition and/or a tax letter can be provided by the Collections Manager. \nFor Hollywood Heritage Archive:  These are items that Hollywood Heritage’s curator agrees are compatible with our collection.  An appointment may be set up with our Collections Manager.  Much of the collection has been donated by individuals and families with relatives who contributed to the film industry and the Hollywood community\, often with the goal of preserving their relatives’ participation in Hollywood. We are also interested in photographs or other documentation of any properties in Hollywood\, as we maintain an archive of each property by address.  For further information about donations you may contact our museum manager. \nHollywood Heritage\, Inc. is a 501(c) 3 California state non-profit corporation.  All donations are tax deductible to the full extent of the law.  We will be happy to provide a receipt for donations for tax purposes. \n\n  \n  \n \nAdmission:\nHollywood Heritage members:  Free! SUMMARY:African American Firefighter Museum
DESCRIPTION:EVERY SUNDAY – Los Angeles\nVisit The African American Firefighter Museum! The African American Firefighter Museum is dedicated to promote diversity and to stand up for inequality against all races and genders. \nThe first floor contains vintage fire apparatus\, stories and pictures of pioneering African American Los Angeles Firefighters. The Museum gallery is located on the second floor with pictures\, artifacts and other memorabilia of African American Firefighters from around the country. \nOPEN EVERY SUNDAY FROM 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm\n \n\n\n1401 S Central Ave\, Los Angeles\, CA 90021 \n\nHISTORY\nThe AAFFM opened it’s doors as a Museum on December 13\, 1997. The dedication of the Museum also served as the acknowledgement of what was believed to be the city’s first 100 years of service by African American Firefighters (1897-1997). In 2002\, the Los Angeles Times contacted the AAFFM and stated they had discovered factual information to indicate the history started before 1897 with a man named Sam Haskins\, who was listed as the first Los Angeles Fireman of African decent when he was hired in 1892 and killed while responding to a fire in 1895. \nToday the Museum is open to the public and is strictly volunteer and donation driven. It is a 501 c(3) non-profit organization and it is available for use by organizations and individuals that desire to host events such as; meetings\, luncheons\, dinners\, banquets\, book signings\, film viewings\, jazz festivals\, social dances\, receptions and retreats. Our beloved historian\, 96 year old retired Firefighter Arnett Hartsfield\, who passed away in 2014 was our most cherished volunteer. As a Los Angeles Firefighter during the 1940s and 50’s he lead the integration of the Los Angeles Fire Department. As a graduate of USC law school\, he and his fellow firemen known as the Stentorians\, the NAACP and the local community were instrumental in successfully integrating the LAFD. The stories of the men that endured that horrific fight are told by the museum’s photographs\, paintings\, and artifacts. \nMISSION STATEMENT\nThe African American Fire Fighter Museum is dedicated to collecting\, conserving\,  and sharing the heritage of African American Fire Fighters through collaboration and education. \n\n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nwww.aaffmuseum.org\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

SUMMARY:Santa Monica History Museum
DESCRIPTION:OPEN THURSDAY – SUNDAY- Santa Monica\nThe Santa Monica History Museum was founded under the “Historical Activities Committee” of Santa Monica’s Centennial Celebration in 1975 and by a public poll\, with their goal to collect\, preserve\, and be the caretaker of history. Its name at that time was the Santa Monica Historical Society and it was designated as the official collector and preserver of the history\, art\, and culture of the Santa Monica Bay Area. Former Mayor Clo Hoover\, the first woman mayor of Santa Monica\, was elected the first president. \n\nThe museum\, one of the largest in the country for a city the size of Santa Monica\, has grown far beyond expectations with an expansive collection of artifacts\, photographs\, and memorabilia. Thousands of hours have been dedicated to public education and museum services. \n \nWith the help of Louise and Bob Gabriel who had been active in the community for years and had a strong love for Santa Monica and its history took on the responsibility to make the museum a reality.  Within three years\, with determination\, perseverance\, and countless hours of work\, Bob headed the fundraising committee and raised the necessary funds. Louise was able to get all the furnishings for the museum donated by companies that were going out of business. Bob found a temporary rent‐free location on Colorado Avenue. \n\n\nOur Mission\nThe Santa Monica History Museum’s mission is to collect\, preserve and share the history and culture of Santa Monica for generations to come. \n\n\n\n\nOur Vision\nThe Santa Monica History Museum is the steward of the rich history of the Santa Monica Bay area. We are committed to enriching our community by providing public access to our extensive collection with interpretive exhibitions\, public programs\, community partnerships\, and through archival and research services. \n\n\n\nCURRENT EXHIBITION FROM APRIL 1 – DECEMBER 23\, 2022\nBroadway to Freeway:\nLife and Times of a Vibrant Community\n \nIn the mid-20th century\, the Broadway neighborhood was a thriving\, tight-knit community in Santa Monica. Built by African American\, Mexican American\, and immigrant communities\, the Broadway neighborhood was a haven for those who were excluded from other parts of the city by racist and anti-immigrant policies and practices. \nThis exhibition tells the story of how residents built Broadway into a flourishing community of color – and how the Interstate 10 freeway destroyed it in the 1960s. The vibrant lives of pioneering individuals – like the first African American teacher and social worker hired in Santa Monica – are knitted into the neighborhood they built together. The community populated Broadway with welcoming schools\, homes\, and businesses – from beauty parlors and jazz clubs\, to the malt shop\, tortilleria\, and Jewish deli. \n \nFeaturing period photographs\, advertisements\, oral histories\, and songs\, the exhibition draws on the wealth of archival material collected by the Quinn Research Center\, which is dedicated to preserving the history of African American life in Santa Monica. \nToday\, little evidence remains of the community on the blocks between 13th Street and 20th Street\, once the heart of the Broadway neighborhood. Though physically erased\, Broadway lives on in the stories that are preserved and shared to illuminate past inequities and spotlight the inspirational individuals who created a center of social and civic life on their own terms. \n\nAdmissions\n\nGeneral – $5.00\nSeniors & Students – $5.00\nChildren under 12 – Free\nMuseum members – Free\nVeterans & Active-duty military – Free \n\nHours\nMonday – Wednesday: Closed\nThursday: 3:00pm – 8:00pm\nFriday – Sunday: 11:00am – 5:00pm \nMuseum Holiday Hours\nWe are closed in observance of the following holidays: New Year’s Day\, President’s Day\, Easter\, Memorial Day\, July 4th\, Labor Day\, Thanksgiving\, and the day after\, Christmas \n\nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nsantamonicahistory.org\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

With a focus on contemporary art made from craft media and processes\, Craft Contemporary presents dynamic exhibitions by established and emerging artists and designers who are often underrepresented in larger art institutions. Craft Contemporary complements these exhibitions with a creative line-up of educational programs\, including hands-on workshops led by professional artists. Craft Contemporary cultivates an environment for people in Los Angeles to deepen their relationship to art\, creativity\, and one another. \n \nOUR HISTORY\n⁣In 2018\, the museum board of trustees voted to change the name of the Craft & Folk Art Museum to Craft Contemporary to best reflect its current mission. The name Craft Contemporary was chosen to emphasize the word ‘craft’ as a verb and a noun—celebrating both the act and outcome of making. Craft Contemporary continues to respect the deep history of the craft field while also looking forward to its bold and exciting future. \n\nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \ncraftcontemporary.org\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n  \n
