DESCRIPTION:OPEN DAILY – Laguna Beach\nWELCOME TO THE PACIFIC MARINE MAMMAL CENTER! The Pacific Marine Mammal Center rescues\, rehabilitates\, and releases marine mammals\, and in doing so we contribute to ocean science and conservation. See some of our current rescued patients recovering! We are run primarily by volunteers who will greet you in our visitor yard and introduce you to our California sea lions\, Northern elephant seals\, Pacific harbor seals\, or Northern fur seal patients. Our visitor yard features interactive displays\, marine mammal artifacts\, and a Treasure Trove gift shop. There is no charge for admission\, but donations are appreciated! PMMC also offers educational programs for all ages. \nOPEN DAILY FROM 10:00 am TO 4:00 pm\n \nReservations are required for groups of 10 or more only\, smaller groups need not make reservations. We are closed on Thanksgiving\, Christmas Eve\, Christmas Day\, and New Year’s Day. \n\n\nBOOK YOUR GROUP HERE!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n20612 Laguna Canyon Road Laguna Beach\, CA 92651 \nHISTORY\nPacific Marine Mammal Center began as Friends of the Sea Lion in 1971 with only three volunteers: Jim Stauffer\, John Cunningham\, and Dr. Rose Ekeberg. \nIn the spring of 1971\, a little girl approached Jim Stauffer\, a Newport Beach lifeguard\, on the beach.  The little girl told Jim that she had seen a seal on the beach.  Jim hopped in his lifeguard jeep and went to go investigate.  What he found was a young Pacific harbor seal. When Jim placed the animal in his jeep\, it leaped right out.  Jim decided the animal must be healthy and just needed to rest\, so he returned to work.  \nConcern for the animal nagged at him all day. When Jim returned to check on the small seal\, it was still on the beach.  Jim picked up the seal and took it to the Dover Shores Animal Hospital\, where Dr. Rod La Shell examined the animal and found that it had lungworms.  With advice from Dr. La Shell\, Jim nursed the harbor seal back to health and released the animal back into the ocean. \n \nMISSION STATEMENT\n“The Pacific Marine Mammal Center rescues\, rehabilitates\, and releases marine mammals and inspires ocean stewardship through research\, education\, and collaboration.” \nRescue\n \nUnlike whales and dolphins\, seals and sea lions don’t have to remain in the water in order to survive. The animals beach themselves to be warm and dry when feeling ill. They seek rest on land for a variety of reasons and are not always in need of intervention. Our staff is trained to recognize animals suffering from infections\, malnourishment\, pneumonia\, gill net strangulation\, etc. which can harm an animal’s chance for survival. \nRehabilitation\n \nWhen a “patient” is admitted\, our staff performs all necessary procedures under the direction and protocols set by the Animal Care Director and our Veterinary Medical Director. During the course of rehabilitation\, animals require a variety of treatments such as administration of antibiotics and subcutaneous fluids\, tube feeding\, force-feeding\, wound care\, etc. \nMost animals come in dehydrated and the most effective means to provide fluids and nourishment is through tube feeding. The process requires the blending of fish\, electrolytes\, warm water\, vitamins\, and medication into a fish formula. This formula is fed to the animals by inserting a flexible tube into the stomach using large syringes. As soon as the animals are hydrated and stable\, we wean them to eat whole fish. \nRelease\n \nOnce an animal has gained an optimal weight and is competing for food\, it’s ready for release. Prior to release\, each animal is tagged with an identification number. The color-coded tags indicate the animal has been rehabilitated and helps identify the specific animal and care center in case the animal needs care in the future. We strive to return every one of our patients back to the wild once their care with us is complete. \nEducation\nIt is not enough to rescue and rehabilitate these animals. We must communicate what needs to be done so that positive change can happen. PMMC strives to inspire ocean stewardship in all generations through sharing the stories of the animals we assist. Over 50\,000 people learn about conservation by talking with our education docents and interacting with exhibits in our visitor yard each year. We welcome over 7\,000 children\, most through our free programs for at-risk communities\, in our onsite experiential-based education programs that teach the importance of marine science and eco-friendly behavior. Our outreach team engages thousands of more people in offsite programs\, which share the importance of community involvement. Additionally\, through distance learning technology\, our education department brings conservation messaging to children and adults all over the nation and internationally. \nResearch\n \nAn important part of marine mammal recovery is ongoing research. Research is being done to find the pathological conditions that affect the marine mammals of Southern California. It contains a spectacular array of beaded objects\, including a majestic throne\, elaborate chiefly gowns and sophisticated divination regalia. \nA collection of post-apartheid election materials and contemporary South African art is being developed\, as are a number of collections of popular urban arts from countries including Tanzania and Muslim Senegal. Recently\, more than 400 textiles made by the Kuba peoples of the Democratic Republic of the Congo were gifted by the Christensen Foundation. \nThe collection represents some of the finest examples of men’s embroidered raffia pile cloths and women’s appliqué cloths. This collection complements already significant holdings of West African textiles from countries such as Mali and Ghana\, including kente and adinkra cloth and Asafo flags. The Indonesian and Philippine textiles reinforce the Fowler Museum’s standing as a major repository for the textile arts. Also included are significant collections of sculptural material from Sumatra\, Borneo\, Sulawesi\, and Luzon\, puppetry from Java and Bali\, basketry from Indonesia and the Philippines\, and metalwork from the Philippines. The primary strength of the Pacific collections lies in materials from Papua New Guinea\, especially the Papuan Gulf\, Trobriand Islands\, Sepik River\, and Maprik region. Australia and Polynesia are also represented by sizeable collections\, including 45 rare Maori cloaks. \nThe collections from mainland Asia are smaller but growing rapidly\, due to current collecting priorities. A collection of betel-chewing paraphernalia\, representing several countries in South and Southeast Asia\, is considered one of the finest in the world. Other holdings include textiles from Bhutan\, Pakistan\, India\, and Japan\, baskets and decorative arts from Japan\, puppetry from China\, Thailand\, India\, and Turkey\, and art and artifacts from Nepal. \n\n\n\nARCHAEOLOGICAL COLLECTIONS\n\n\n \nThe Fowler Museum at UCLA also serves as a repository for archaeological collections acquired during research conducted by UCLA faculty\, staff\, students\, and other professional archaeologists. Documentation of the collections includes artifact catalogs\, excavation notes\, maps\, and photographs. These collections serve primarily as an archive for teaching and research. Mindfulness Meditation is the moment-by-moment process of actively and openly observing one’s physical\, mental\, and emotional experiences. Mindfulness has scientific support as a means to reduce stress\, improve attention\, boost the immune system\, reduce emotional reactivity\, and promote a general sense of health and well-being. These half hour weekly sessions are open to all who are interested in learning how to live more presently in life. No special clothing is required\, and participants are welcome to join for five minutes or enjoy the entire 30 minutes.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThese free weekly drop-in sessions usually take place in the Hammer’s Billy Wilder Theater but are now offered live online via Zoom. \nMindful Awareness Meditation is provided by UCLA & The Hammer Museum\n  \nff \n\nSessions are led by Diana Winston and other instructors from the UCLA Mindful Awareness Research Center. Mark your calendars and surrender to the irresistible allure of Concerts on Canon at Beverly Cañon Gardens\, where a symphony of unforgettable experiences awaits. \n\nCONCERT LINE UP\n\n\nJULY 27 SUSIE HANSEN LATIN BAND\n\nThe Susie Hansen Latin Band plays salsa and Latin jazz — salsa\, cumbia\, merengue\, cha cha cha\, bolero and bachata.  The band has been together for 32 years.  Susie plays the electric violin and sings\, and the the Long Beach Press-Telegram has called her “a hot Latin fiddler and bandleader.”  Lead vocalist Daniel Castillo from Venezuela also plays congas.  Electric guitarist Kaspar Abbo from London England sings lead vocals in English.  Also in her six-piece band are piano\, bass and drums/timbales. \nHansen has performed with Cuba’s premier dance band\, Los Van Van\, both in Los Angeles and in Havana\, Cuba.  She has also played with Orquesta Aragon\, Cuba’s preeminent Charanga band.  She performed or recorded with Tito Puente\, Paquito d’Rivera\, Vikki Carr\, Macy Gray\, Orquesta Broadway\, Giovani Hidalgo\, Jose Rizo’s Jazz on the Latin Side All-Stars and others. \nSusie also pursued an education in math and computer science\, ultimately earning two master’s degrees in engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)\, but ultimately her musical career took precedence.  She has released three albums on the Jazz Caliente label.   An original Latin jazz song Susie wrote\, “Las Calles de Chicago\,” has been on rotation with Sirius Satellite Radio for eleven years.  The song\, “La Salsa Nunca Se Acaba\,” has been popular across the country and around the world for the past seventeen years\, regularly selling hundreds of downloads to this day.  Her CD “Solo Flight” was named by Latin Beat Magazine as one of its “Top One Hundred Independent Latin Jazz Recordings.” \n\nAUGUST 3 RUMBA ACOUSTIC BAND\n\n \nRumba Acoustic band has been performing Persian all time favorite songs for the last ten years in the Los Angeles area with their own unique approach. \n\n\nAUGUST 10 SMOKIN’ COBRAS\n \nThe Smokin’ Cobras perform classic AM radio’s greatest hits from the fabulous 50’s\, rockin’ 60’s\, funky 70’s and restro 80’s.  Hit songs from soul\, to rock and pop\, and back again.  High energy. Iconic artists.  From Dodger Stadium to Japan\, The Smokin’ Cobras have thrilled audiences at festivals\, casinos\, corporate functions and private events. \nThe Smokin’ Cobras are proud to be servin’ up classic AM radio hits to a new millennium! \n\nAUGUST 17 THE TOKENS\n\nThroughout the sixties\, The Tokens wrote\, produced and recorded some of music’s most well known songs.  Besides their smash recording of\, “The Lion Sleeps Tonight\,” they also had hits with “Tonight I fell in Love\,” “I Hear Trumpets Blow\,” and “Portrait of My Love.”  Successfully transitioning to the other side of the recording booth\, they produced The Chiffons’ “He’s So Fine\,” and “One Fine Day\,” The Happenings\, “See You in September\,” and “I Got Rhythm\,” and Tony Orlando & Dawn’s “Candida\,” “Knock Three Times\,” and “Tie a Yellow Ribbon.”  The Token were also the first group to play their own instrument tracks for recording sessions. \n\nAUGUST 24 DAVID GAB\n \nBorn in Tbilisi\, Georgia\, David Gab has been performing music in front of audiences of #0\,000+ with his band\, GT Batumi.  David Gab has participated in The Voice in Georgia\, and he lived in Sydney\, Australia where he released two EP and LP albums.  Gab collaborated with the New York Film Academy in Los Angeles and filmed his music video\, “I Like it Up.”  Besides being the lead vocalist\, he is also a multi-instrumentalist ranging from romantic love songs on the piano\, to rock’ out on the guitar and drums.    Like  other musicians\, he was inspired by Pink Floyd\, Led Zeppelin\, Elvis Presley and Deep Purple.  Gab is currently working with musicians\, Leland Sklar\, Bassist with Toto\, Phil Collins and James Taylor; and\, Steve Ferrone\, drummer for the late Tom Petty and the Hearbreakers\, and The Dire Straits.  Gab is a member of the Grammy Recording Academy and BMI Music. \nConcerts on Canon\nBEVERLY CANON GARDENS\n241 N. Creating scenes inspired by suggestions from you\, the audience. Showtime is 7:15 pm and is free with an optional donation at the end of the night. The location is The Clubhouse Theater which is a small location literally right beside Jon’s Grocery store entrance on Vermont Ave. You’ll see some comedy posters on the windows out front. \n \nAugust 12th’s show will feature improv teams The Funnies\, Dearly Beloved\, and a superstar team of greats including Peter Banifaz\, Will Hines\, and Jim Woods. \nThere is free parking all over the shopping center lot including in front of the theater. You’ll probably see lots of people standing right outside the doors of the theater. \n\n \n1607 North Vermont Avenue\, Los Angeles\, CA 90027 \n \nThe Clubhouse is your home base for indie improv shows and classes\, sketch\, and a place for the comm. It is an independently owned and operated comedy theatre in the Los Feliz area of Los Angeles. There are classes and shows 7 days a week\, 365 days a year. \nEvery show at the Clubhouse is run by the people who perform there and is offered free of charge. The entire theatre is paid for by the donations that are taken at each show. If you do not have cash on hand\, most teams offer their Venmo or Paypal info. The Clubhouse is also the only theatre in town that offers ample free parking on site for everyone both onstage and in the audience. There are plenty of options for new and seasoned improvisers\, comics\, and writers to get stage time. \n \nUnlike many other theaters in Los Angeles\, the Clubhouse has no house teams\, has no specific form or curriculum\, and is open to everybody. Visit our submissions page to find a show to submit to\, or just stop by for one of our nightly improv jams. Whether improv\, sketch\, stand up or a variety act\, everyone can find a show to participate in. You can also walk in any night of the week and check out any show in either of our two theaters. Because the Clubhouse has no employees\, and everyone who participates in the community does so on a volunteer basis\, it is up to everyone who uses the Clubhouse to maintain it. Please respect the space\, it is only as good as we keep it. The Clubhouse is run by the community for the community. \nThe Clubhouse is an inclusive community-run donation-based comedy venue available to all.
